rominently displayed on a wall outside City Hall since 2010 is a sign that says: “Long Beach, the most bicycle friendly city in America.”

And as if to reinforce that statement, last Thursday the city unveiled its new Bike Share program.

The program will initially launch with 100 bicycles and 10 stations starting with stations in the downtown and Shoreline area. Eventually the program will include 50 stations equipped with 500 bikes available to rent for residents and visitors. The city plans to offer rates by the minute, with daily plans, bulk minute

plans, monthly plans for commuters and locals who use the service regularly, along with annual plans for institution.

Funding for the Long Beach Bike Share comes from a $2.3 million Call for Projects grant awarded by Metro.

“Culturally, it’s new to Long Beach, but in reality, it is not a foreign concept,” said Vice Mayor Suja Lowenthal. “The bikes are very attractive. People are curious about this, and people will try it. It will be fun. This is an opportunity to create a new layer of the bicycle network in Long Beach.”

This is one of many additions

to Long Beach in recent years that have made the city friendly to peddlers from downtown to Second Street.

Bike Long Beach is a public works program within the city of Long Beach, which provides bike safety workshops, and Bike Saturdays, a program that offers bike riders discounts at local Long Beach businesses for riding their bikes on Saturdays.

Nate Baird, Mobility and Healthy Living Programs Officer for the city of Long Beach helps coordinate programs for Bike Long Beach and said that Bike Share will add flexibility for bike riders.

“With grant funded projects we pursued to make those innovations go further, and we’re adding in small levers, like bicycle repair stations and hydration stations along favorite routes to make bicycling and walking even easier for more trips,” Baird said. “Bike Share is only the latest tool to be deployed, and we expect to pursue and deliver even more.”

Baird said he moved to Long Beach two years ago, and has found that riding a bicycle has been an ideal form of transportation for him.

-Photos by Andy witherspoon choice for the greatest number of trips,” Baird said. “I can get to the beach, to work, to grocery stores, to shops, to restaurants, to great bars, all pretty easily and quickly with just a five to 10 minute bike ride.”

It should come as no surprise that with its cycling reputation Long Beach is home to a community of riders organizations.

“I have always enjoyed cycling as a favorable mode of transportation,” said Erik Garcia of LBCycology. “And when I moved to Long Beach five years ago it was quickly apparent that there was a community of like-minded individuals.”

LBCycology is a local bike collective in Long Beach, and Garcia is one of six active members in the collective who all share the duties of operating the group. “[The collective] tries to connect the powers of cycling and community building together,” Garcia said. “We do this through many different initiatives.”

Some of the things the collective does include conducting bike maintenance workshops to enable people to care for their own bikes, donating free bikes to those who need transportation including members of the homeless population and those who do not own a car, and coordinating safe family-friendly rides through different areas of Long Beach.

“As with most beach cities, parking is a huge issue in Long Beach,” Garcia said. “A fun night out can easily be derailed by a 45-minute expedition to find parking for your car. Riding a bike completely eliminates that problem.

There is a strong community of cyclists in the city, so there is less of a chance of you ever really riding alone, and there’s something comforting about that.”

Garcia said the group is always looking for people that want to get rid of their bikes, and also coordinates with another group called Moonlight Mash that does a night ride the first full moon of every month.

One of the most popular bike paths are the ones that on right on the beach according to Baird, and more lanes are coming to Long Beach.

“I’m most excited about Alamitos,” Baird said. “The coming new bike lanes there will connect together the beach paths, our cycle tracks, bike lanes on First and Second Street, as well as future bike boulevards on Sixth and 15th streets. Nearly overnight, our bikeway network will be so much more comprehensive.”

Garcia said he believes that the cycling community is an integral member of the Long Beach demographic, and that creating a viable network of cycling infrastructure directly benefits the public health of the community, the positive growth of the local economy and the environment.

“We are all volunteers from a diverse array of industries that share two things in common; A love of cycling and a love of Long Beach,” Garcia said. “Our only agenda is to introduce cycling to as many people as possible in hopes of creating new friendships and communities.”

iking and walking around the closed-off streets on Broadway and Pine avenues and Fourth Street will definitely whet your appetite Saturday at Long Beach’s Beach Streets Downtown event. Some of your favorites, like George’s Greek Café on Pine, will be popping up for the first time, and some future restaurant discoveries are gearing about up for their second rodeo.

Local businesses are jazzed for the large amount of expected foot and wheel traffic.

Dana Robertson, owner of the hip and modern cafe and eatery Restauration, located on Fourth Street and Ohio Avenue, says that she and her team are excited for the event.

“Anything for closing down the street and getting people out and about,” she said Restauration will host a pop up on Fourth Street and St. Louis Avenue that will feature homemade ice cream bars and a bike valet alongside MVP’s and Kafe Neo. Gallagher’s Pub & Grill at 2751 E. Broadway Ave. will be hosting live entertainment from one of their resident performers while offering specials like double Bloody Mary’s for $6, beer pitcher deals and bottomless Mimosas from 9 a.m.-2 p.m.

Assistant manager Mandy Ireton is excited to see new faces stroll into the pub, as Gallagher’s is a watering hole for regulars.

Berlin Bistro will also be holding a popup table near noodle mecca Number 9 on Fourth Street near Dawson Avenue.

Owner and president of 4th Street Business Kerstin Kansteiner is excited for a large turnout and says that Berlin will be offering small plates on their outdoor eating patio.

Kansteiner says that Beach Streets allows for great foot traffic, which is great for local businesses like Berlin.

“It’s awesome,” said Hayden Brakebill, son to the owner of EJ Malloy’s Pub & Grill, on Broadway and Redondo Avenue.

Brakebill said that he is looking forward to EJ’s “staying busy all day.”

Rock Bottom Brewery on Pine Avenue and Ocean Boulevard will be holding specials like half-off beers. Host Avery Yarde says that events like this are great for Rock Bottom and local businesses. “[Events] bring more people to businesses,” he said. “It’s money being well spent in the city.”

Whether it’s a coffee at Berlin, a Guinness at Gallagher’s or a gyro at George’s, take a load off your bike or feet and tap into a local business or two this Saturday.

Calling her bluff Dharma Shakti, visionary of Free Yoga on the Bluff, finds her purpose in channeling Long Beach’s spiritual community.

our barren trees form a steeple over Bluff Park’s post-card ready overhang, casting shade as shelter. A tan, brawny man lays his bandanna out at the top of his mat and blesses it to his forehead. He kneels, folds over himself, and stretches long, pressing his head down as if praising the soil for guidance.

As bright mats fill in the empty plots around him and the 11 o’clock hour comes to a close, followers assume similar rituals typically reserved for a mosque on a Sunday.

Senior citizens. Children. Experts. Newcomers. Dogs.

The congregation’s all here.

With eyes closed and hands clasped, the grassy cliff in the corner of Long Beach houses a spiritual denomination all on its own.

Then, at the meridian of a 300-headed trove, emerges a lithesome figure packaged in bushy dreadlocks and a green juice in hand inscribed “Goddess Dharma,” as if she manifested from the roots themselves.

She wears no rosary or Biretta. Just a hoodie and an imminent smile. She shouts. They oblige.

“Hands at eyebrows; may our practice cultivate thoughts with awareness,” she counsels. “Hands at mouth; may our practice cultivate speech with awareness.

Hands before the heart; may our practice cultivate living with awareness.”

The figure is Dharma Shakti, 34, founder of Dharma’s Free Yoga on the Bluff, where donation-based yoga classes are offered every day at 11 a.m. on the overhang. On the weekends, the Aryuvedic practitioner and the self-ascribed Peace Ambassador teaches each session, with selected colleagues taking over during the week.

On Saturday, as a part of the Beach Streets event, she will be teaching a class from 10 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. at Bixby Park.

Shakti stumbled into the figurehead position two years after receiving her yoga-instructor certification in 2005. It began as a simple service to a band of four or

five friends who were unable to afford studio memberships at the time.

A few strokes of paint on a wooden sign and one flip-phone group chat later formed the dual wings of a butterfly effect, essentially birthing the community-wide staple of Dharma’s Yoga on the Bluff, which unraveled its mat on Junipero and Ocean Boulevard in 2007.

Guided by her hips, the cynosure saunters through improvised pathways while her two boys, 6 and 8, prance among contorted bodies.

Her roar is strong and unwavering, but remains in constant conflict with deafening exhaust pipes and ’50s doowap blaring from classic cars on the main street.

Sun-kissed in the salt mist, the mixedmass flows into fragmented sun salutations.

“If you can’t touch your toes, then there must be something wrong with you,” Shakti jokes. “Or at least that’s what your thoughts are telling you. Turn them off. Be here. Be present.”

Applause closes out the class. Shakti remains at her post. She offers business cards, hugs and an outlet to confide in for the reawakened woman who finally left her jerk of a husband, the reborn man that weaned off his anxiety pills, or the couple conquering matrimonial woes.

“The essence of yoga is that true connection. Most of the time I’m talking to myself [so] that is coming from that authentic place,” Shakti says. “I know I’m doing my job right [when] people are really getting benefits from this.”

Long Beach senior citizens Kate Connors and Elizabeth Quigley express their affection for the “magical, shiny” Shakti post-Saturday’s session, only able to follow their practice due to the ‘pay what you will’ policy on a pensioner’s fixed-income. “[Shakti] really helps me quiet my mind and tap into that spiritual side,” says Justin Mars, a Long Beach resident and soon-tobe father, slouched next to his girlfriend

- Photo by Karen Sawyer Lauren Escobar, just four months pregnant. The two are both in recovery from drug and alcohol abuse, welcoming a new chapter of their life with a baby on the way.

“A lot of times when you’re out going to work and stuck in daily routines, it’s hard [to focus],” Mars continues. “Sitting here for this one hour relieves a whole week’s worth of stress.”

But Shakti and her colleagues at her east Broadway, donation-based studio Yogalution, Marlene Martin and Drew Wall, remember when city streets weren’t freckled with rolls of bright foam mats jutting out of a biker’s backpack or under the arms of a passerby.

“Long Beach had this young scene of artists and entrepreneurs that would hang out and just uplift each other. They weren’t all doing yoga; they were just more on that conscious spiritual journey,” Shakti explains, noting that she was 20 years old when she was sucked into the scene.

“That scene is still here, but we’re all in our thirties now.”

Since then, Shakti watched as the yoga community exponentially expanded in a 20-year span.

“When I set my mat down that first day under those four trees, I knew it was something amazing,” says Martin, a yoga

instructor and Long Beach resident. The former Angeleno’s practice began in 1999 in a covert, elitist yoga scene.

Excluding classes constrained to the physical element of yoga, there were only two yoga studios in Long Beach at the time — Free Spirit Yoga and Yogaworld.

Martin remembers 6 a.m. drives down the 101 Freeway to attend a $110 per month class. Now, she hears Shakti’s name echoed in supermarkets, from novices visiting the Yogalution studio and at the origin of the scene, whenever she revisits the Los Angeles yoga community.

Wall traded in eight months of unemployment and a lifelong battle with depression for janitorial chores at Shakti’s studio in place of currency for classes.

Completing his teacher training in 2010, he now leads Mondays at the bluff and assists Shakti in her teacher-training program.

“Yoga on the bluff facilitates the soul of our city in a way,” Wall says. “It allows people who live in a toxic environment — our water is poison, our air is poison, we don’t have any nature around us — to gather in a park and be still together.”

Watching the community grow from an exclusive band of “bohemian, new-age hippies” to the diversified culture it unfolded into today reassures Wall of his humble

“There has been so much good that has happened in so many peoples’ lives because Dharma decided to teach free yoga at the park,” Wall says. “There are people who have met and had babies because of her; giving people a place to meet can be a beautiful gift to the community.”

But infectious, word-of-mouth exposure led to more followers and a three-year tiff with Long Beach city officials. Authorities questioned Shakti’s intentions, claiming that she was running a business on city property without a permit.

“I was just some person trying to do my thing, trying to offer someone a free service, and the city couldn’t understand why anybody would do that,” Shakti says.“I had to explain with the whole parks and recreation board in front of me — there’s this thing called yoga and inside it is a philosophy called ‘selfless service’ where we give back to our community and we don’t just take. We give, and we’re so grateful for the business that we give.”

The impasse resulted in a specialized commercial permit for fitness providers, requiring an annual $350 fee in addition to liability insurance. It restricts anyone without a business license from offering any form of free service.

“If you got a dollar on you, I’ll take that dollar. If you got lemons on a lemon tree, I’ll take your lemons — just get your butt here,” Shakti says. “When you come from that place where it’s just like ‘I really want to serve you, whatever you have to offer, I’ll take,’ people are so grateful; people work their way up. It doesn’t have to be so myopic.”

Shakti credits Brian Kest, creator of the Santa Monica studio Power Yoga, in her commitment to a donation-based model, citing him as the original yogi to introduce the economic prototype to studios in the states.

“The days that I showed up worrying about money, there’s no money in the box,” Shakti says. “The days that I’m here to serve, unattached to the money, is when there’s money — you’ve got to learn to trust.”

The ‘business owner’ hat didn’t fit Shakti at first. Marrying an ancient, holistic practice to the urban monetary-unit based lifestyle seemed perverse. Eventually, the demand from her followers overbore her hesitation.

“People really wanted this to happen,” Shakti says, suppressing the memory’s discomfort by focusing on the encouragement that followed. “The universe has a funny way with me where I will really resist my life, but things will just turn and be like, ‘Nope, we’re going to do this anyways.’ ” Not only does the donation-based model (in contrast to a fee-for-service model) reap in more profit for the business owner, she also expresses a newfound detachment to money that grosses more value for her as a spiritual paragon.

“Like trees, they don’t have to think about where their food is going to be coming from; they just know that the sun is going to come out and they’re going to be able to grow their leaves,” Shakti says. “There is a knowing in nature. When you get quiet enough, you see it.”

But before Dharma Shakti was a business owner, a community leader, a peace ambassador or a mother — she was Andrea Rodrigues.

“She was very shy, very self-conscious; she wouldn’t even call and order pizza on the phone,” says Robin Lamarche, Shakti’s mother.

“Definitely not the same girl.”

Growing up in Torrance, Shakti was the eldest of four siblings, but the runt of the Mormon household.

Her grandfather called her Fofinha, a Portuguese petname meaning “little, soft one,” that is now commemorated as a tattoo on Shakti’s back.

The petite tyke often felt her size, which triggered a lifelong battle of insecurities that she addresses in her classes today with body-positive yoga philosophy.

Despite fear, her mother recalls the days when Shakti would participate at church to give talks and bear testimony.

After her parents divorce during her high school years, a despondent haze sent Dharma looking for “a sense of calm.”

“She always believed in a higher power, in a God or a Jesus. She always loved him,” Lamarche says. “I was afraid that she would get sucked into some cult … [but] I understood her longing for knowledge, her longing for truth and finding her path.”

As Buddhism crept into ’90s western-world culture, books on Buddhism and the modern aesthetics that accompanied them became the beck to her call.

Shakti enrolled in a month-long yoga immersion program, the Sivanada Ashram Yoga Farm in Grass Valley. Bunked up with four girls to one room on a strict, two-aday yoga practice schedule, she was reborn, and became an “eternally transformed being.”

tras and spiritual names to the students at a ceremony to progress spiritual evolution.

Beautiful, feminine names such as “Devi,” “Citta” and “Maa Lakshmi” christened her colleagues, while Shakti’s name shipped a day late, laced in a warning from an abrasive, Cambodian woman.

“Be careful! It’s a very powerful name.

Go sit down,” Shakti imitates. “I was like, ‘What? What kind of name is that? It’s a sucky name and now she just gave me a warning with it! What does that even mean?’ ” A Pujari, or Hindu temple priest, pulled the dejected, newly-dubbed Dharma Shakti aside to explain “Your name means righteous strength. It means she who has the strength to fulfill her purpose,” Shakti recalles. Then, the ‘aha-moment’ kicked in.

“It just hit me. Like oh, ‘her purpose.’ Oh wait, I have a purpose,” Shakti says. “[The spiritual name] is supposed to remind you of who you are, and you bes’ believe that that happens to me every day.“ On any given day, 100 to 300 people may show up on the bluff to see this zeal through. Though her message fluttered from a simple breeze at the beginning to the cyclone that it is today, her mission remains the same: to reconnect her followers with their spiritual selves.

“You’re in a body. But then you have this mind. But then you have this soul that forgot it can direct all of this,” Shakti explains.

“For so long we thought we’re this victim, and our mind does whatever it wants. Our body does whatever it wants. The more control we get, the more we feel empowered in our lives — that’s what I want to cultivate. ” Going abroad and reaching out online are in the works for Shakti. She hopes to extend her knowledge through videos on Vedic philosophy and organize a retreat to India with and for her followers.

“Every day is a spiritual awakening,” Shakti says. “Every day is the epiphany if you can just remember that. ”

A block party, concerts, a community festival, kid’s zones, food tasting and bands playing on restaurant patios are just some of the entertainment and activities planned for the Beach Streets Downtown Open Street event on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Broadway corridor – from Pine Avenue to Euclid Avenue – will be open for walking, bicycling, skating and socializing. The Downtown Long Beach Associates (DLBA) will be activating locations throughout downtown with various versions of their signature events, including live music; special restaurant tastings; bicycle activities; a dog friendly event; and a special version of “Live After 5” that will become a post-event finale with bands and a beer garden. t’s time to pump up the Blake & Gary bike tires, Pinto Metzker change the skateboard bearings, dust off your favorite pair of comfy walking shoes and rediscover that long-lost pair of skates. Have a kid? Bring the stroller. Crazy Uncle? Bring him too, because everyone’s invited.

Long Beach will be shutting down a four-mile stretch of Broadway Avenue on Saturday, from Pine Avenue to Euclid Avenue from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., for the second annual Beach Streets event.

“I think it’s a great way to try and get the community together,” Long Beach resident Rhonda Schultz said.

Last year, the city hosted its inaugural Beach Streets event in the Bixby Knolls area of north Long Beach, drawing a crowd of more than 25,000. Now, with lessons learned, this year’s affair has the potential to be a truly unique and exciting experience for the city.

“Beach Streets is a fantastic way to open up the city,” says Vice Mayor Suja Lowenthal. “In effect, we are opening up the city’s living rooms to everyone and showing that we don’t have to be dependent on cars for everything.”

The roots of the event stretch back to the 70’s and many recognize Bogota, Columbia as the first government to officially sponsor the now-famous program

Bicycles are the most common choice of transportation at the events – last years was about 80 percent cyclists – but it is open to anyone and everyone ready to enjoy the car-free streets.

Lowenthal, a longtime cyclist, is a proponent of all things having to do with a bicycle.

“I think folks are intrigued by this concept where they can navigate the streets with nothing else on it,” she says.

“We are taught to stay out of the street, to look both ways before crossing. I look all around all the time when I’m on my bike.”

Lowenthal says she has been working on a bike mobility plan for the city for almost a decade. She points to the Car-Free Friday plan the city had where participants could get discounts at restaurants if they brought their bicycle helmets into the restaurants with them.

“Beach Streets is just another installment in this bicycle narrative,” she says.

It is also a great way to promote local businesses and neighborhoods, affording people the chance to take more than a passing glance from a car window at many of Broadway’s corridor’s restaurants, bars and shops. There will be offshoots to lose yourself in as well, allowing people to discover places like 4th Street Retro Row for example.

munity festival at Bixby Park, kid’s zones, food tastings, bands playing, a dog friendly event and a special version of “Live After 5” for a finale with more bands and, of course, a beer garden.

City Manager Pat West hopes to see the event give everyone a chance to get out and mingle with the community.

“This is something where we really embrace the neighborhood more than a 10K or something like that,” West says. “We’re trying to get everybody in the business community and the neighborhoods to come out and embrace it; to show what’s special about your neighborhood and special about your business so everyone can come out of the doors, greet everybody and basically have an eight-hour party.”

Third District councilwoman Suzie Price believes there are economic and cultural advantages to the event coming to her district.

“I went to the Beach Streets event in North Long Beach,” Price says. “The number of new people who came to the event and patronized the businesses was great.

This type of event brings all the people together in the community. People will overlook the temporary intrusions. It will be a nice break.”

Price said that the city used many, different social media outlets like Facebook, which used the Ad Taxi to get to a million posts on the website, plus advertising in the local media, like The Edge. Also, Price sent almost 4,000 emails to her subscribers and flyers were sent home with students in the Long Beach Unified School District.

Councilwoman Lena Gonzalez, who represents the First District, knows the value of bicycles because many residents in her district rely on them for transportation.

“Bikes are an important mode of transportation for people in the First [District],”

she says. “But Beach Streets is an opportunity for a family to enjoy a day together, and it’s a day for tourists as well to see what we have downtown.

Gonzalez believes the event will be well received. “Residents can say ‘wow’ the city is doing something amazing.”

Again, social media has been a key to getting information about Beach Streets to people in the downtown district.

“I’m seeing many things happening with social media,” Gonzalez says. “Even older generations. A lot of seniors do have Facebook, even if they share a computer with 100 other seniors at a center. It has been a great help for us.”

Gonzalez would like to see Beach Streets become a recurring event; maybe even taking the event into West Long Beach.

“West Long Beach is so important,” she says. “We don’t do enough there. Getting from Willmore to Cabrillo High School; a lot of people use bikes to get over the river. I think having an event there would be great.”

Last year’s event was made possible by a $300,000 grant the city received, otherwise it would not have been fiscally feasible. However, after receiving such encouraging feedback from businesses and residents alike, city officials knew they were on to something. Now, according to West, having multiple Beach Streets each year is something they are working toward in the city’s budget.

“If we can get this down into a formula, then we would love to start doing these things several times a year,” West says.

He referred to the fact that this is still a relatively new venture, and quite large, for the city and still difficult to put an exact price tag on, especially as it gains in popularity.

“We’re expecting a large crowd,” West says.

According to West, it wouldn’t be surprising to see more than 30,000 people for this year’s event.

West also discussed how the Beach Streets event ties directly into the city’s livability initiative, helping to make Long Beach more bike friendly, foot friendly, and swimmer friendly.

The 52 square miles of Long Beach already has 140 miles of bicycle infrastructure, with 20 miles under construction and another 140 miles planned over the next 8-10 years. The 20 miles under construction will finally connect north and south Long Beach.

“We’ve been very busy trying to be one of the most bike friendly cities in America, and to do that you need infrastructure,” West says. “If you look at L.A., they’ve been busy doing programs. . . A program is fantastic, but once it’s over it’s over.

the leisure of doing the programs.”

According to West, once the planned projects are completed, “we will be far more advanced than almost any city in America.”

Beach Streets will coincide with the launch of Long Beach’s new bike-share program. With 500 bikes and 50 kiosks, the city believes the infrastructure is ready to help lead the nation in promoting healthy living for its residents. Beach Streets is a perfect example of how a city can promote health and fun by combining them into something that helps local businesses, neighborhoods and musicians as well.

“This is about creating a municipality, a community in Long Beach where people can be healthy,” West says. “You don’t have to join a gym, we want to create opportunities where you can be outdoors and be safe whether you’re a walker, a jogger, cyclist or swimmer and just enjoy the outdoors of our community.”

A singular sensation

T

here is one thing you can say about Gregg Young and the 2nd Street Band’s performances: no two are the same.

With 40 different musicians at his behest, the award-winning artist of blues, funk-groove, and smooth jazz will be playing Saturday between 2 p.m. and 2:45 p.m. at Bixby Park during Beach Streets.

Young’s cohort can play different genres ranging from jazz to blues, and Latin to Caribbean. Every performance is made up of a handful of these artists to create the perfect performance for the specific genre in mind.

“It’s almost like having multiple bands.

I call them line-ups,” Young says.

For this show at Beach Streets, it will be Gregg Young and the 2nd Street Funk-Jazz Band performing. Young will be playing guitar, Kirkwood Coakley on bass, and Joey Navarro on keyboard.

Coakley is a Grammy nominated bass player and Navarro is a keyboardist for several bands, including El Chicano.

His band also won ‘Best Blues’ and ‘Best Funk-Groove,’ also by the L.A. Music Awards. With this show being focused on funk-jazz, Young says that part of the performance at Beach Streets will most likely be “instantaneous composition,” feeding off the energy of the audience.

“That’s part of being a jazz musician,” Young says. “When you take a solo, it is a composition within the piece of music, the song, or groove. “It is its own composition within it. And there’s this communication and conversation that goes on with all the players. When something gets a solo, you get into the instantaneous composition part of it.”

Young expects that Beach Streets will be a fun event, engaging people in a different way other than just sitting down and watching a live performance.

“Long Beach is embracing the complete spectrum and so that way, all of that knowledge, all of that experience, all of that gets combined and put together,” he says. “The synergy of it is astounding.And to be able to do that for folks that are riding their bikes and putting it in a unique context; it’s not at

a performing arts center, it’s not at a formal music festival, it’s not at a corporate event. It’s for everybody.”

Young says it is important to him for his music to be involved in the cultural arts community. Young and his band do shows at performance arts centers, festivals, and corporate work. They record their albums at Mambo Sound & Recording, a studio in Long Beach.

Aside from playing shows, Young has shared his love for music with children through Classroom Connections, a program through the Carpenter Center that sends artists to Long Beach Unified Schools to give music workshops. Young did a workshop on rock-n-roll to nine different schools. At the end, he did a live performance for the kids including a song called “D3,” standing for “Don’t Do Drugs.”

“To be able to share a positive message and to be able to share the roots of rockn-roll, and then to experience a concert, which was no holds barred,” he says.

“We had guitars, bass, drums, keyboard, two percussionists and two additional female vocalists. We killed it.”

tainment Center in Hollywood. He lives in Long Beach with his wife, and his two sons are recent graduates of California State University Long Beach.
