Residential Burglary in Sierra Monday Night

Multiple Sheriff’s department personnel responded to a call of a brazen residential burglary at the 400 block of Baldwin Monday evening.

At 10:40 p.m., deputies were dispatched to the private home to discover the suspects gone.

TCHS’s Helping Hands Organization Works to Support Local Non-Profits Two weeks ago, on Feb. 22, the San Gabriel Valley (SGV) Humane Society received a donation of $513 from Temple City High School's (TCHS) Helping Hands Organization (H2O).

The club raised the money by selling dog treats and collecting donations of spare change.

The H2O members present at the ceremony were President Codi Weisz (sophomore) and Vice President Megan Lee (freshman). They presented the money in the form of a check to Cindy Rigney, who is currently the director of the SGV Humane Society.

Helping Hands Organization is a brand new club, founded in September 2015

by Codi Weisz, with the idea of generating funds for four local non-profit organizations. Weisz believes the start

of making the world a better place is to make your home a better place.

She would like to thank all those who have shown support to the SGV Humane Society and is inviting others to help her club raise funds for their next non-profit organization, Women In Need Growing Strong (WINGS), a shelter for battered women and children. The members of this club use their own pocket money to buy the supplies for their bake sales and would like to ask for some donations in order to continue with their fundraising efforts. Hillsides raised $408,000 at its annual gala, Symphony of Dreams, held at the Millennium Biltmore Hotel in Los Angeles on Saturday night, Feb. 27. A crowd of more than 400 guests enjoyed an evening of top musical performances, a spirited live auction hosted by NBC4 Southern California Weathercaster Fritz Coleman, and an emotional testimonial by a Hillsides client, 2016 Rose Princess Donaly Marquez.

“We’d like to thank everyone who supported Symphony of Dreams, which is Hillsides largest fundraiser of the year,” said Hillsides Chief Executive Officer Joseph M. Costa. “The funds will be used to help the more than 6,200 children and families we serve throughout Los Angeles County.”

The gala kicked off with a performance by the Los Angeles Children’s Chorus, Young Men’s Ensemble, who serenaded guests as they entered the hall. As dinner started, 2015 “American Idol” Top 4 Finalist Rayvon Owen warmed up the crowd with a spirited rendition of Stevie Wonder’s “Higher Ground,”

and later performed an original song about the redeeming power of love, “Rescue.”

The emotional high point of the evening was the speech by Rose Princess Marquez. She told of a harrowing childhood spent on the streets with an abusive mother before she and her siblings were adopted. In high school, when her traumatic past began to catch up to her, she reached out to Hillsides for counseling.

Marquez credits her Hillsides therapist with giving her the courage to try out for the Tournament of Roses Royal Court, calling the therapist her mentor and inspiration. “I truly believe Hillsides has not only opened up doors for me, but has also assisted

me in trying to find myself in the midst of everything else,” she said.

During the evening, guests also had a chance to bid on 11 packages during the live auction emceed by Coleman.

Symphony of Dreams was chaired by Dr. Annette Ermshar, a Pasadena-based clinical psychologist who is active in the local music community and who added many unique musical elements to the event.

Hillsides was founded in 1913 and headquartered in Pasadena, is a premier provider of child welfare services serving families in crisis and children in foster care.

City Manager Chi’s Update Regarding Gold Line Traffic Impacts

This past Saturday, March 5, we all had a chance to experience the official opening of the Gold Line here in Monrovia. In the coming days, months, and years, the Gold Line will no doubt serve as a tremendous resource for our community, and for the entire San Gabriel Valley.

However, with the official opening of the Gold Line, we also experienced tremendous traffic impacts associated with new light rail service. Several north and south arterial streets in Monrovia were clogged with congestion due to the fact that the train stop arms were not functioning

properly. In addition, better traffic signal light coordination with each train crossing would help improve the traffic impacts.

The most visible traffic problems occurred on Myrtle Avenue; however, additional unacceptable delays were experienced at Mayflower Avenue, Magnolia Avenue, California Avenue, and Mountain Avenue.

The city has been in constant contact with representatives from Metro, and we are working collaboratively to develop options to fix the issues at hand. The train stop arms need to function correctly, and we have identified that

concern as the first priority to address. We also need to develop better traffic signal light coordination, which is a more complex issue that requires coordination between the city, Metro, Los Angeles County, and CalTrans. We have a number of individuals working on the issue, and we are committed to getting these issues resolved in as timely a manner as possible. The Bald Truth About Fundraising for Pediatric Cancer Research Over $63,000 Raised Locally for St. Baldrick’s Last Year St. Baldrick’s Day will be celebrated in its usual manner at Matt Denny’s in Arcadia - by shaving heads March 12. But this year Monrovia is getting into the game with an event on March 17 at T Phillips on Myrtle.

On Tuesday, March 12, hundreds will line up to have their heads shaved. Last year a female Arcadia firefighter lopped off not only her long pony tail, but went the

whole shaved head route.

All the shorn were united in one cause: raising money for pediatric cancer research.

According to the St. Baldrick’s Day foundation, the Matt Denny’s location alone raised more than $63,000 last year. Perhaps one of the biggest events locally.

600 location nationwide hold events to raise awareness and money. A spokesman at the Founda-

tion said that the event at Matt Denny’s was one of the largest fundraisers nationwide.

“That is not the complete total,” said Matt McSweeny, owner of Matt Denny’s. “We still have money coming in. It’s only right that we have one of the biggest events. The foundation has its headquarters in Monrovia and they send over volunteers to handle our event.”

Superior Court Judge Bruce Marrs is not afraid to get his head shaved again. Having personal experience in his family, the judge raises money every year for St. Baldrick’s.

It all started in 1999 among a group of friends in New York with an idea of raising money to help children with cancer. By 2004, their efforts had resulted in millions being raised and a foundation being established. Starting in 2005, the foundation has given more than $154 million to support research for cures and better treatments for kids with cancer.

An immigration judge earlier this week ordered he be deported on grounds the flight school had terminated his enrollment and as such his student visa was no longer valid.

The judge also refused to release Elsayed on bail after prosecutors argued he posed a flight risk.

Bushra said Elsayed’s Facebook message was in response to Trump’s antiMuslim rhetoric and was accompanied by an article on the issue.

Pasadena police personnel need the public’s assistance in locating a missing elderly woman. On Friday, March 4, 81-year-old Julie Sanchez voluntarily left a managed care facility in the 1400 block of North Garfield Avenue in the City of Pasadena. Sanchez is partially blind and suffers from depression and hypertension. Sanchez was reported missing to the Pasadena Police Department when she did not return to the facility. At this time, Sanchez’ whereabouts are unknown.

Julie Sanchez is described as being a female Hispanic, 5-foot-4-inches, 130 pounds, with a medium complexion, brown hair, and brown eyes.

She was last seen wearing an unknown color blouse and black pants.

The police department is asking anyone who has seen Sanchez or has information regarding her whereabouts to call police dispatch at (626) 744-4241.

Police Need Help Locating Elderly Woman

MONROVIA March 4 At 2:25 a.m., an officer was on patrol in the area of Monterey and Bonita when he observed a vehicle commit a vehicle code violation. The officer conducted a traffic stop and contacted the driver. He immediately noticed signs of intoxication.

The driver was determined to be driving under the influence and was arrested. The driver was held for sobering.

March 5

At 8:28 p.m., an officer observed a suspicious male and female looking into a parked vehicle in the 900 block of Fifth Avenue. Officers contacted the subjects, who were now sitting in a vehicle. Investigation revealed one of the subjects was in possession of smoking paraphernalia; she was arrested and taken into custody. The subject was booked and later released with a citation to appear in court.

March 6 At 1:12 a.m., a resident in the 500 block of Diamond called to report his vehicle was on fire in his driveway.

Officers responded and located the vehicle, which was fully engulfed in flames and parked near the garage.

The intense flames were near the roof of the structure. Officers used two fire extinguishers to hold down the flames until the Monrovia Fire Department arrived. The vehicle was recently purchased and had been parked at the location for several hours prior to catching fire. The quick reactions of the officers kept the home from catching fire.

The vehicle was a complete loss; the cause is believed to be an electrical malfunction.

At 8:36 a.m., officers responded to the 100 block of Montana regarding a domestic dispute. When they arrived, they determined a male and female adult were involved in an argument.

During the argument, the male struck the female in the face with an open palm.

The male subject was arrested for domestic battery.

ARCADIA

March 4 At about 6:25 a.m., an officer responded to the 300 block of Longden Avenue regarding an activation of an Arcadia Police Department GPS tracker. The officer discovered unknown suspects stole the package, left it inside their vehicle, and abandoned the vehicle before officers arrived. One of the suspects left her California ID in the vehicle and was seen on surveillance footage stealing the package.

The suspect is a 29-year-old female from the City of Whittier. The investigation is ongoing.

Around 4:50 p.m., an officer responded to Citibank, 100 South First Avenue, regarding a robbery that had just occurred. An investigation revealed an unknown suspect entered the business, presented a demand note, and fled without any

property.

The suspect is described as a Hispanic male in his late 20s, approximately 5’10� tall, 180 pounds. The investigation is ongoing.

March 5

Just after 8:14 a.m., an officer responded to a residence in the 600 block of Camino Grove Avenue regarding a disturbance report. An investigation revealed a fight occurred between a husband and wife resulting in the husband threatening his wife as he retrieved a firearm. The 57-year-old male from Arcadia was arrested and transported to the Arcadia City Jail for booking.

At approximately 9:22 a.m., an officer responded to Arcadia Party Rentals, 124 Wheeler Avenue, regarding a vandalism report. The officer discovered unknown suspects spray painted graffiti on five box trucks sometime during the previous afternoon. No suspects were seen and no witnesses were located.

PASADENA March 3 At about 6:42 p.m., Pasadena Police officers conducted a traffic stop in the area of York Drive and Lake Avenue after seeing the driver commit a CVC violation. Officers contacted the driver and during their field investigation, they recovered a loaded magnum revolver. The driver, a known street gang member, was arrested without incident and transported to the Pasadena jail.

At about 9:56 p.m., Pasadena Police officers responded to the 300 block of East Orange Grove Boulevard regarding an ADW (Assault with a Deadly Weapon) investigation. On arrival, officers learned that the victim was approached by the suspects as he walked home. The suspects confronted the victim, and without provocation, threatened him with knives. The victim fled the location while another

community member called the police. Officers located the suspects in the area and detained them without incident. Following positive field identification, the suspects were arrested and transported to the Pasadena jail.

March 4

At about 10:49 p.m.

Pasadena Police officers responded to the 00 block of Claremont Street regarding a fight in progress. The reporting party told PPD dispatchers one of the subjects involved in the fight was armed with a pistol. As the officers approached the group they heard a single gunshot and the suspects immediately fled the area.

PPD officers chased the suspects who were detained a short time later without incident. Officers subsequently located a firearm in close proximity to the suspects.

The suspects were arrested without incident and transported to the Pasadena jail.

The efforts of these officers removed yet another gun from our community.

At a meeting this week, city staff met with representatives from the Beckman Research Institute to review plan check processes, interior demolitions, and other related tenant improvement issues. Based on the results of the meeting, we are anticipating that the Beckman Research Institute will be moving in to Monrovia later this calendar year.

National Monument Talk Set for April 15 at Duarte Museum A presentation on the new San Gabriel Mountains National Monument previously scheduled for March 5 will be held on April 15 at 7 p.m.

The change was made so as to not conflict with the grand opening of the Duarte Metro Station.

The talk will feature Joseph Llewellyn who recently joined the Forest Service after 13 years with the National Park Service. His role as the partnership development coordinator is to work toward “greater public outreach and engagement through community partners, youth participation and education.” He adds

that the Forest Service has a “commitment to innovation in creating greater relevance to it gateway community.”

The new National Monument will bring changes to Duarte, but the details are not clear. Llewellyn will address residents’ questions regarding how the designation will affect our local mountains, trails and access, what it means to the environment, and what changes the public may expect due to the designation. Response to ‘Ballot Measure Aims to Repeal Arcadia’s Utility Tax’ I just can’t help but think of all the revenue Arcadia is generating on building permits alone! It seems like every other house in my immediate neighborhood is being torn down and “remodeled,” which translates to $ for the city.

Repeal the utility tax and place a tax on water wasters instead. Many homes still water everyday, rain or shine.

Response to ‘Measure A Makes Waves’

I don’t mean to pick on the Arcadia city manager, just his compensation, to illustrate a point in response to the prior comment. A $200,000 base salary, nearly $300,000 with benefits, is not sustainable. On top of this, a defined-benefit pension plan allows for retirement at up to 80 percent base salary, or $160,000 per year.

Assuming 20 years of employment, the city will pay out roughly $6 million in salary and benefits while working, plus another $3.2 million in pension while retired for 20 years. That is over $9 million for just one employee. This is the crux of Arcadia’s fiscal problem. And it only gets worse over time with inflation and COI. If you apply the same calculation to a 20-year career for all 300 city employees, with a city-wide average salary of roughly $80,000, the total is over $1 billion. That’s a billion dollars for 300 employees for the operations of a city with only 57,000 residents and 30,000 voters. That’s $37,000 per voter. It is not sustainable.

Long ago, the federal government and most corporations began moving to

defined-contribution plans, e.g., TSP and 401(k)s. Let the city manager and all employees use a portion of their salaries to fund their own retirement in a tax-deferred 401k plan. The city can kick in a 5 percent match. In retirement, these folks can look back with pride on their careers as public servants while resting comfortably on the 401k nest egg they earned, plus Social Security. Just like most private citizens and federal employees do.

Measure A will require greater fiscal discipline from city government. It just might force the city to get in step with most employers, including the federal government since 1986.

Residents Angry at Myrtle and Duarte Traffic

You are absolutely correct. All these years of learning how to program traffic signals and getting it right, it seems

like they’ve thrown it all out the door. Other cities are nowhere near this bad.

Left turn arrows coming on at crazy intervals, a green light leading under the freeway meeting a red light 75 feet away, lights not coming on for minutes on end when cars are waiting and there’s no cross traffic, lights going red every 20 seconds for a few seconds then back to green … it’s insane. It’s almost as bad as in the old Gremlins movie.

Are they hiring nonprofessionals to do this work?

Now we have a signal at Peck Rd., but the parents dropping kids off for school are stopping in the middle of Peck to drop the kids off. Last week a fire truck came up Peck Rd. The mothers panicked, attempting left turns to get out of the way for the fire truck. We certainly need some changes.

Letter to the Editor: Reply to Mr. Holland

With two letters to the editor, Mr. Holland has suggested that the Watchman and the Tattler need to do their study of the facts. That is exactly what Holland needs to do.The city employees did receive a COLA wage increase in the 2015-16 budget. If the city reduced expenditures by $2 million dollars, then why is the new budget of $22.764 million $1.5 million higher than the previous year? The General Fund was balanced

because the city received large grants for re-development from the state, according to the city manager. This was printed in the adjudicated city newspaper.They also passed this budget, without any verbal debates, and the city prepaid for 2015-16, the PERS requirement (same article).

Does one think that new homes will be built? They had better or else they will lose the $32 million lawsuit that they have before them. They only talk about the “General Fund” in an effort to retrain and teach the people in an effort to have the people vote “yes” on the upcoming ballot issue. You are only receiving piecemeal information by the city only talking about the “General Fund” which is less than 50 percent of the whole budget.

Here’s hoping that you get the whole story and not believe what they are saying in an effort to get your “yes” vote.

We have our facts straight and we have studied much more than their sales pitch. Believe what we have reported because the facts all come from the city information that is not widely discussed … go to the library and study all the information that the council receives at every meeting, find out what they are spending our taxpayer’s dollars on.

Vote “No” on the Utility User’s Tax (UUT), the people cannot afford to pay the 10 percent forever!

Dear Editor: The City of Pasadena investments and debt for Fiscal Year 2015 shows $908,334,805 in bond debt, ($36,939,080 interest payments), $2.256 billion dollars in assets (June 30, 2014) and no plan to reduce costs to provide essential services to Pasadena.

The Pasadena City Coun-

cil has no plan to improve public safety. Read “Resident Wants Pasadena to Look at Charter Reform” and “Response to Sierra Madre P.D. Situation” (Pasadena Independent’s Feb. 17, 2016 issue).

Will Pasadena follow Baltimore and Ferguson with the police department under the supervision of the U.S. Attorney General’s office? Will Pasadena follow Sierra Madre City in depending on outsourcing their police department? Will the new city manager be required to discharge the police chief as stated in public comment by an attorney?

There are councilmembers who delay construction projects by making unreasonable demands on developers after they receive permits from the building department and are approved by hearing officers. For example, why did Avery-Dennison Corporation move their headquarters with 1,750 jobs to Glendale? Why do councilmembers picket Huntington Memorial Hospital (HMH) one day on behalf of a nurses union and later be present to vote for or against HMH? Will this city council prevent medical hospitals from expanding due to long and costly delays in meeting zoning codes and speculation of alleged zoning overlay issues? HMH employs 3,200 employees while Kaiser Permanent has 4,760 employees.

Attached is “Major Employers” by the Pasadena Chamber of Commerce. What action will this city council take to keep them in Pasadena? Why does this city council discourage business investments by reducing customer parking and access by automobiles?

I encourage employers to read “Employers Could Get Sued for Following the Law,” (Washington Times, Jan. 4, 2016 issue).

Reader Responds ‘City Council Authorizes Several Municipal Contracts’ (2/25/16 Issue) Dear Editor: Comment on Item 3 contract award to PK Corporation for playground renovation at Linda Vista Park for $285,000 – from the Pasadena City Council meeting on Feb. 22, 2016. I suggest that the city council not approve this contract at this time. When offering contracts for bids, Pasadena should notify contractors they can bid less than the estimated cost since contracts are awarded on a cost-plus basis contrary to the recommendations of the Los Angeles County Civil Grand Jury final reports. Why is the City of Pasadena paying a $5,000 monthly rental rate to the Pasadena Unified School District for use of this two-acre park?

Why should the City of Pasadena replace all the existing playground equipment, repairs, landscape, etc., for a two-acre neighborhood park with very limited use at this time?Why was this contract awarded for 16 percent less than the estimated cost of $243,200, when nine contractors bid for more than $243,200? These nine contractors’ bids were denied a chance to win the contract, which was awarded on a costplus basis. Why was $20,735 added for a possible contingency that may never occur?

Will the $60,000 contract’s administration/inspection fee be used for other parks and landscape projects or is it a gift to the Department of Public Works? Whenever a contract is awarded for less than the estimated cost, the labor commissioner will be more likely to check to verify if there is compliance with prevailing wages.

Shaw’s ‘You Never Can Tell’ Onstage at ANW Across

Ruiz George Bernard Shaw, renowned Irish playwright, whose body of work ranges from acerbic satire to historical allegory, shows theatre enthusiasts once more why his plays endure to this day. One of his earlier pieces, “You Never Can Tell,” is onstage at Pasadena’s A Noise Within (ANW) starting March 6 through May 15.

“You Never Can Tell’s” director, Stephanie Shroyer, an associate professor of Theatre Practice and artistic director at USC’s School of Dramatic Arts, proclaims, “This is a wise, warm, and terrifically funny play – after all, what other play about love opens in a dentist’s office, with a practitioner who becomes the major love interest, pulling his first tooth without using anesthesia because it is an extra five-shilling charge?”

“I’m a big fan of Shaw – I love his wit and provocative thinking. I didn’t know this play intimately well but fell in love with it after reading it,” Shroyer further enthuses.

More than 1,700 Registered Nurses to Strike Next Week Registered nurses (RN) at Kaiser Permanante’s flagship Los Angeles Medical Center (LAMC) will hold a seven-day strike beginning Wednesday, March 15.

Concurrently, RNs at Good Samaritan Hospital in downtown Los Angeles, will strike for one day on March 16, the California Nurses Association/National Nurses announced this past Monday, March 7.

At both hospitals, the nurses are seeking a collective bargaining agreement that addresses significant concerns about safe patient care staffing, as well as economic improvements to assure the hospitals can retain experienced RNs and recruit new nurses. The walkout will affect 1,200 RNs at Kaiser, and 540 RNs at Good Samaritan “We are embarrassed by the lack of resources Kaiser is putting into this hospital,” said Aisha Ealey, a neo-natal intensive care unit RN at LAMC. “If Kaiser is planning on using this medical center as its teaching hospital for

their medical school, it is critical to improve patient care conditions especially for our region’s sickest babies and kids, end floating (the assignment of RNs to areas outside their expertise) and provide for a fair contract for nurses.”

LAMC is the hub for specialty services such as Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation, a procedure for high-risk patients and is the regional high-risk center for young children with cancer.

Nurses are calling on Kaiser to invest in this regional specialty center and settling a fair contract with strong patient care provisions similar to what Kaiser has previously agreed in the CNA contract for 18,000 nurses in California.

“Kaiser LAMC prides itself on being the tertiary flagship center for the Southern California region and has expanded services here in the past few years, but it is hard to provide quality care while we are constantly short staffed,” said Joel Briones, a coronary care unit RN at LAMC.

By Estefania Zavala Since March is National Nutrition Month, there is no better time to separate the myths from the facts in our eating habits. Beginning with a mystical fruit, we tackle berries. Berries have long held a mystical, fairy-tale appeal to most people. There are the pastoral and nostalgic images of picking berries in the countryside and there are the rugged, adventure tales of a traveler lost in the wood, living off of wild berries. However, all berries are not alike and some do have considerably more nutritional value than others. Similarly, when selecting a treat, it is always better to go with the whole berry – you are not going to get any antioxidants or mystical nutrition from a mixed berry Pop-Tart. Here is a simple guide to the top three trendy berries in Southern California.

The most prevalent and accessible of berries is the strawberry. Bright, sweet, and red, you may have fond memories of eating these as a child during the summer. Perhaps your mother doused them in sugar and cream or perhaps baked them into a pie. As a

Californian, you are uniquely blessed with this berry because California is the nation’s leading provider of strawberries, harvesting more than 2.3 billion pounds in 2014 alone.

The next “superberry” is the blueberry, a tiny fruit packed with antioxidants that can help prevent anything from cancer to diabetes.

These antioxidants also help with memory retention in older adults. So, the conclusion: feed your grandparents blueberries! These berries also contain 32 percent of your daily Vitamin K needs, 25 percent of your Manganese

needs, and 19 percent of your Vitamin C needs. However, be vigilant! These berries are expensive and manufacturers often cut corners. Chances are the blue sludge in your blueberry Pop-Tart is sugar, food coloring, and cornstarch. Even Quaker Oats oatmeal uses fig pieces that are dyed blue to simulate the real blueberry.

Remember, this “superfruit” is packed with nutrition as long as you are buying the real deal.

Perhaps the most trendy and expensive berry right now is the açai. Its health proponents range from helping with arthritis and preventing cancer. Like their less exotic brother, the blueberry, açai berries are also packed with antioxidants and contain a

good amount of healthy fat.

However, research has yet to confirm many of these health benefits. Additionally, one of the downsides of the recent burst in popularity for the açai that the booms has deprived Central and South American people of their own native fruit, since the countries have been forced to export so much of the fruit that it is no longer affordable.

This does not detract from the health benefits of the fruit but it is a little something to think about while you enjoy your beautiful açai banana berry bowl from Nekter Juice Bar in Pasadena.

While berries may seem like a magical and delicious answer to your nutritional needs, there are traps you should avoid. Any processed berry has had sugar added to it and the amount of actual fruit in the product may be nonexistent. In the case of very exotic berries, such as the açai, the demand for these fruits may cause negative consequences on their native environments. As you enjoy the first rust of spring berries in this National Nutrition Month, remember to be conscious of the berry myths.

The Sierra Madre government election will occur in April, 2016. The two Council Members that have served their four-year term have decided to run for reelection. Both have served as mayor, and say they want to run based upon their record over the past four years. The immediate thought is “Why?” since all they have done is raise every fee, tax, and regulation as high as they could.

They have declared a building moratorium and water moratorium, which doesn't even begin to make sense. This has placed the city in the position of being sued for over $30 million for denying construction where the city had made settlement to allow building with the previous owners. If they were to allow the building, then maybe this area would give them more income in order to cover the sunset of the UUT. If they wanted to do something that makes sense, then declare a mora-

torium on hiring any new employees with the exception of blue collar workers to fix the infrastructure.

They have raised the water bills so high that even with the 30% reduction in use, the bills are higher than before the rate increase.

These men have worked overtime trying to sell the people on the idea of a 10% tax on the UUT without any future sunset. It does not stop them even after the issue has been defeated twice already. They do not like the fact that the people have petitioned to eliminate the UUT altogether, which shows more evidence that the people cannot afford this tax.

They have raised every fee and regulation that they can and the parade does not end, but rather this continues at every meeting. What makes them think that the people are happy with their efforts?

They have finally stated at a regular meeting that all

the city’s infrastructure has long been in a state of disrepair. What's new, this has been known for over fifty years.

What the city needs to do is to cut spending of approximately ten million dollars. This has to come from decreases of employees. Every employee that becomes PERS eligible becomes a liability to the city for as long as that person lives. The city needs to recover the money that they should have spent on the infrastructure and not try to tax the people for their own neglect.

If you think these council members will change their ways and work for the people, then let them have your vote. If not, they will continue on the way they have operated, and the only way you can express yourself at the ballot box is not vote for them, period.

Here's hoping they see the light!

The Coleman Chamber Concerts were started in 1904 by Alice Coleman, a gifted pianist living in Pasadena. Local chamber musicians performed early concerts in private homes.

The Coleman Concerts moved to the Pasadena Playhouse in 1927, and began to feature ensembles from throughout the United States and Europe.

The Sunday afternoon six-concert series has been scheduled in Beckman Auditorium on the campus of the California Institute of Technology since 1965, presenting the finest chamber ensembles, with varying instrumentation and programs which balance classic and contemporary repertoire.

Sierra Madre has the world’s largest blossoming plant, wisteria (also spelled “wisteria”) that’s called One of the Seven Horticultural Wonders of the World. The plant is over 100 years old, and a festival each year attracts thousands to see this monstrous, gorgeous specimen filled with fragrance and displaying shades of purple

and lavender.

It is believed William and Alice Brugman purchased the small plant at a local nursery and in 1894. It has outlived the couple and continues to spread joy with its beauty and size today. The Wistaria Festival brings thousands to an annual event and celebration that showcases a living entity.

In Monrovia, we understand how important the Arts are to our Monrovia Unified School District students and the community.

Through our board-adopted five-year strategic plan for the Arts we have expanded our Arts programming offering our students opportunities to participate in art, music, dance, and theatre programs at all grade levels. Community partnerships with the Boone Foundation, Monrovia Schools Foundation, Hutto Patterson Foundation, Arts For All, Pasadena Showcase House, Fellowship Monrovia, the Monrovia Duarte Black Alumni Association, and individual donors from the community have helped to make this growth possible. Rare Book at Sierra Madre Public Library Exquisite wood blocks, the work of Sierra Madre resident and artist Marvin (Elmer) Weese, are a special part of the rare book collection and the Sierra Madre Historical Archives, housed at the Sierra Madre Public Library.

Weese’s stunning work is featured in “Early California with Block Prints in Color,” 1952, hand printed in Sierra Madre and signed by the author, “For the Sierra Madre Library, Sincerely, Marvin Weese.” He made watercolor sketches, cut out the blocks, and printed the block print illustrations in his book which took him 15 years to complete. According to an LA Times article from March 6, 1955, Weese’s book, “Presents the story of California from Cortez to ‘The Iron Horse’ in capsule form … represents a dramatic episode or period of the State’s colorful history.”

Home Invasion Robbery, Four Suspects in Range Rover Sought Four suspects were seen driving in the Duarte Mesa area in a silver Range Rover with paper plates. They parked in a driveway of a Duarte home and sat for several seconds before quickly exiting the Range Rover and approaching the victim who was busy working on his yard. The suspects began attacking the resident who attempted to flee to the street while calling for help from his neighbors.

The male victim was beaten as was a female victim who was attacked as she opened her front door to answer as two suspects rang her doorbell. Both victims were transported to a local hospital for treatment of their injuries.

A third victim escaped injury as she fled in her car after stopping to check on screams from the home. The third victim saw the first victim on the ground. The

With the lines clearly drawn in the sand, candidate Gold said he was not against a UUT … “just not this one.”

Cappocia equated getting rid of the UUT, which would essentially eliminate the Sierra Madre Police Department (SMPD), to “throwing the baby out with the bathwater.” The mayor used his time on the podium to mention that a certain blog in town which has allegedly been feeding erroneous information to its readers regarding the UUT. The LASD last Monday evening, March 7, responded multiple units to the 400 block of Baldwin with a report of a residential robbery at approximately 10:40 p.m.

One member of the audience at the Kiwanis lunch pointed out that had we not contracted with LASD for night patrol, the quick response might never have happened.

Measuring the Stock Market

Every day we hear numbers that evaluate the stock market’s performance, such as the Dow Jones Industrial Average or the NASDAQ Composite Index. There are a myriad of market indices, and it may seem like they are all measuring the same thing.

However, each index evaluates the market in a different way.

- Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA) While the DJIA is often used to represent how the stock market is performing as a whole, the index is made up of only 30 large company stocks. Despite its name, the index is composed of more than just industrial companies. The index includes long established entities like General Electric and 3M as well as newer firms, such as Apple, Nike, and VISA. The components of the index change from time-to-time, but it always includes stocks that are among the largest in the market. However, given that the index represents the performance of a very limited number of stocks, it may not signify what is happening in the broader market. The DJIA’s value is calculated by adding up the price of all 30 stocks and then dividing it by a specific measure created by Dow Jones.

- Standard & Poor’s (S&P) 500 Another reading of large company stock performance comes from the S&P 500 index. Many in the financial industry consider this a more accurate measure of broad market performance than the DJIA because it includes a much larger group of stocks.

The index is made up of approximately 500 of the largest companies in the U.S. (currently, there are actually 504 stocks in the index1). This is a “capitalization-weighted” index, meaning that price movements among larger stocks will have more impact on the index than price moves among smaller components in the index. However, the S&P 500 does not account for mid-cap or small-cap stocks’ performance.

- NASDAQ Composite Companies that trade on a global electronic marketplace first established by the National Association of Securities Dealers (NASD) are included in this index. More than 3,000 common equi-

ties are listed on the NASDAQ exchange, including stocks, American depository receipts (ADRs) and real estate investment trusts (REITs). Some companies may be located outside of the U.S. The index’s composition is largely made up of technology companies, so the performance of that industry can greatly influence the index. Like the S&P 500, the NASDAQ Composite is calculated using a market-cap weighting, with the 100 largest stocks accounting for most of its movement.

- Russell 2000 This index measures the performance of smallcap stocks in the U.S. market across a broad swath of industries. It is made up of the 2,000 smallest stocks in the Russell 3000 Index, which tracks broad U.S. stock market performance. The Russell indexes are maintained by Russell Investments, an investment research and management firm. Stocks in the Russell 2000 index cut across a broad swath of industries.

- MSCI EAFE Morgan Stanley Capital designed the MSCI EAFE index to help U.S. investors understand how overseas stock markets are performing, particularly in developed countries. The index represents the combined returns of large- and mid-cap stocks in 21 countries across Europe, Australasia and the Far East (EAFE), including Great Britain, Germany, France, Japan and Australia2.

- VIX A recently developed index that has received growing attention is referred to as the VIX. This is actually a ticker symbol representing the Chicago Board of Options Exchange Volatility Index. Some investors watch this index to gain a sense of the expected volatility, or unpredictability, of the stock market. The VIX calculates an expected level of volatility for the market by assessing current market prices for instruments such as puts and calls. The number is quoted as a percentage. If the index is accurate, the higher the percentage, the more likely a significant change in the market will occur. Since this index has been around only 12 years, it has not yet been fully tested as an accurate predictor of market volatility.

performance of individual stocks or funds that you own can vary, sometimes significantly, from what is reported about the broader stock market.

BY MAY S. RUIZ For some high schoolers, spring break comes this month. It well may be a welcome respite for your children, a time to recharge as they head towards the end of the school year. While it is an opportunity for them

to relax, it is also a chance to evaluate where they are on their schoolwork.

FRESHMAN

Your children should have all their grades on track. They need to concentrate on maintaining good

study habits now to be better equipped to handle the rigors of the workload in the coming years. If they haven’t been reading much, they should seriously consider taking up reading as a hobby during spring break to help them increase their vocabulary which they will

need to take the SAT, and as preparation for writing their essay.

They need to line up their summer activities.

Their grade dean would have some ideas as to how they can explore their passions and research summer opportunities.

Your children may want to consult their class dean regarding summer activities – academic enrichment programs, volunteer work, or part-time employment. College admissions officers are looking for students who explored their passions while getting good grades.

SOPHOMORE

Tenth graders who are taking AP courses need to register for the AP exams administered in May. While there are a slew of small independent tutoring schools offering courses to prepare for the AP tests, some children do not need to take on this additional burden on their already busy schedules. Your children have enough on their plate with the intensive homework associated with an advanced placement course.

That said, your kids would still have to show competence on the AP exams as all scores are submitted to the College Board; all the colleges to which your children apply will see the AP scores.

Your children should also take the SAT subject test. Your children’s teachers could provide guidance on what they need to prepare for. They might want to ask the teachers in that particular course for study suggestions, review packets, and sample tests. There

Besides registering and preparing for the SAT or ACT, your children should use the spring break to visit college campuses. If possible, they should have a prepared college visit checklist with a page or several pages allotted for each school. For each of the schools, they would need to write their overall impressions – what they liked most or least.

They should write their observations by categories: the intellectual atmosphere (Do students enjoy their courses or are they stressed-out? What is the advising system for freshmen? Are there opportunities for independent study/study abroad?).

They should note the social climate (Do students stay on campus or do they leave on weekends? What are the facilities for socializing? Is there an active Greek life?)

campus life (What are the living arrangements? Is there guaranteed housing for four years? What are the dining options?).

One major concern for parents and children should be security on campus (Can outsiders gain access to the library, the fitness center or student union? Are there video cameras around the school periphery?). Of course, the most serious threat to students’ well-being may actually be within the confines of the institution. This topic has become part of the national conversation and some universities are addressing the topic up front.

I, personally, would want to know if officials have safeguards in place to prevent such crime from occurring.

Do administrators disclose information about it or do they hide and blur the facts? What consequences does the school impose on perpetrators?

Some children know right away when they visit a campus that they don’t see themselves in it. It could be that it isn’t the right intellectual or academic fit for them; or the environment doesn’t suit their lifestyle.

But it’s a good thing to know before they decide to apply.

As I expounded on last month, colleges will be sending out decision letters around this time. Your children should keep their wits about them as they await word from the colleges they applied to.

After the marathon they finished, your children could be quite restless and anxious to know if they have been accepted to their school of choice. Remind them to use this quiet time productively by keeping their focus on academics and their grades. They should still engage in other worthwhile activities like sports or arts.

Tell your children that they might be getting letters of rejection from some schools. While you might be more disappointed than your son or daughter, avoid showing it as that sends the wrong message. Not being accepted to their first choice isn’t the end of the world. In fact, while it may not seem like it at first blush, it usually turns out to be a blessing in disguise because in most cases they end up in the school that is the right fit for them.

You and your children should research all scholarships available to them.

Marines Battle Color Detachment Performs at Arcadia High School’s Salter Stadium

BY JONATHAN TSOU The Marines Battle Color Detachment proudly performed at Arcadia High School. The Ceremonial Unit played to hundreds of Arcadia High School students on March 8 at Salter Stadium.

The Battle Color Detachment (BCD) comprises the U.S. Marine Drum & Bugle Corps, The Silent Drill Platoon, and the Marine Corps Color Guard. Traditionally, the Battle Color Detachment performs Ceremonial Maneuver and showcases the pride and precision of the Marines. The Marines are assigned to Marine Barracks in Washington D.C. and is the oldest active post in the Marine Corps. The post was founded in 1801 by President Thomas Jefferson and Lt. Col. William Ward Burrows, the third commandant of the Marine Corps.

Every year the Detachment performs at high schools and colleges around the nation. Its mission is to provide music and ceremony for the Commandant of the Marine Corps and the Commanding Officer. For Arcadia High School, the Band featured the 'Music in Motion' drill by the

Mr. Sherrill, the Arcadia High School Band director, said that the "music students will have a great opportunity to see and to hear some of the finest marching musicians in the country. The musicality, professionalism, and discipline that the Marines will display during their performance will serve to inspire all our students in their musical activities". Mr. Sherrill also was very honored for Arcadia High School to host this performance.

Many students were

impressed with the performance and found it as an inspiring tradition.

"It was an extraordinary event for me as it showcased what true American pride stands for, " stated Chris Chen, a senior musician at Arcadia High School.

Eric Huang, a freshman who just joined Arcadia High School's marching band said that "the Marine Band's performance was amazing" and the "music was great!"

The detachment will perform across Southern California in the next couple of weeks, including at Camp Pendleton, the School of Infantry West.

Last month, 28 Maranatha High School students attended the 4th Annual UCLASIM (Students for Integrative Medicine) Conference. This day-long conference was held at the Ronald Reagan Medical Center at UCLA. The field trip was organized by Maranatha Science Faculty Dr. Allen Jang and attended by fellow Science Faculty Ms. Janessa Ocan.

The purpose of the UCLA-SIM Conference was to present/ explore evidence-based clinical studies on holistic medicine, such as acupuncture.

Maranatha students were the only high school students in attendance.

Three years ago, Dr. Jang started the HOSA (Health Occupations Students of America) club on Maranatha’s cam-

pus. He spoke twice at their SIM (Students for Integrative Medicine) organization. To reciprocate, he then invited SIM to speak at Maranatha High School this January. Sharon Ho, the President of SIM, was so impressed with Maranatha’s students that she offered them 30 complimentary admission tickets to the 4th Annual UCLA-SIM Conference.

t is time again. I am clearing my desk and side stand, and top shelf of little slips of paper I have torn, cut, scribbled, etc. As I collected them I generally thought each would be a start idea for a column. Well, now instead of start ideas, I am going to share them with you as a bunch before I toss them. If I have an author, I will give credit. Otherwise, your guess is as good as mine but I obviously think it is worth repeating.

Here we go: Aging seems to be the only available way to live a

BY JORDANA ARKIN Trumbo is a robust male tabby whose family dumped him outside and moved away.

Awful, I agree. For a year, an elderly lady was feeding him, but coyotes lived in the area and his days were numbered.

Needing to find out more, I emailed Jane, the woman who started the chain. She described him as gentle and friendly, but needed a home now. The elderly lady would not let him indoors, despite the cold, stormy weather. I posted his info on Facebook.

Soon, I received an email from a friend saying that she could not sleep after reading the story. Sound familiar? She offered to foster him. I was thrilled! Next step, catching the big boy.

Jane had a friend who would foster him. So relieved!

I left town assuming he was safe. When I got back, I discovered they released him back where they found him!

They thought he was howling because he wanted to go back outside?! He went through all that trauma for nothing. I cried. Hard. Then, I decided that saving this cat was now my mission! It was time to take over the rescue!

With bad weather brewing, I asked every person I knew or ran into, if they could foster. No luck. Then I thought of Lifeline For Pets. I had been a volunteer for nine years and now I needed their help. I knew I would be asking a lot.

They need to find homes for the rescues they have. In an email plea, I offered to raise donation money and would work hard to find him a permanent home, if they would

foster. The next day, I got a call. They would help! I was so happy, I was shaking. Only we had to trap him … again!

It took three long days, and promising my teenage son

concert tickets if he could get him in the carrier, but it worked! Trumbo was howling his head off as we drove him straight to the foster. She was a lovely woman who understood he would need time to settle. I secretly hoped she would fall in love with him and this would be the last time he would have to adjust.

Well … that is what happened!

A love connection! Again, I cried. Tears of joy. Now Trumbo has a forever home and I can sleep at night.

Well, until the next email that gets to me.

San Gabriel Valley Environmental Awards Sierra Madre Recipients The 2016 San Gabriel Valley Regional Awards event was held on Wednesday, Feb. 17, at Royal Oaks Manor in Bradbury, Calif.

The event is sponsored by the Los Angeles Regional Agency (LARA) which is a joint powers authority of 18 member cities in Los Angeles County, including Sierra Madre.

At the Feb. 17 event, Mary’s Market and the Sierra Madre Natural Resources Commission were both recognized for their environmental stewardship efforts.

Mary’s Market is located in the cozy Canyon area of northern Sierra Madre.

This historical business has served the community with a reverence and celebration of the natural resources that surround it.

The small restaurant has always practices waste reduction in their serving practices, including re-using charming coffee cups from a variety of near and distant locations. Take the Train to See the Ponies Santa Anita Park offers fans a free shuttle service to and from the new Metro Gold Line Arcadia Station, which started last Saturday, March 5.

The Metro Gold Line will, for the first time, provide service to Arcadia, Monrovia, Duarte, Irwindale, and as far east as the Azusa/Glendora border near Citrus Community College.

The Santa Anita Shuttle will run on all race days

and will operate in addition to Arcadia’s Transit Shuttle Service, providing fans with a non-stop trip to and from The Great Race Place, which is located a mile from the Arcadia Station. The Santa Anita Shuttle will be offered through closing day of the track’s Spring Meet on July 10.

PUSD Launches Next Phase of Family and Community Survey With improved customer service as a top strategic priority, the Pasadena Unified School District (PUSD) is launching the next phase of its online family survey by opening it up to all families, PUSD teachers and staff, residents, and stakeholders residing in Altadena, Pasadena, and Sierra Madre. Survey results will help set priorities and policies, inform the district’s Master Plan initiative, and provide insights into how to improve the quality of education for current and future generations of students. This online survey is open until Monday, March 14, 2016 and can be taken by visiting gopusd. com/masterplansurvey. The survey is available in both English and Spanish.

“Engaging with everyone in the communities served by PUSD, whether persons taking the survey have children in our school district or not, is critical to ensuring that we’re moving forward in the right direction,” said Superintendent Brian McDonald, Ed.D. “If you live or work in the Pasadena area, PUSD is your school district and you are investing in our schools every day, so it’s important that our decisions are informed by the diversity of perspectives that makes our area unique. The survey reflects our purposeful approach to planning for the future and making the most of our resources.”

The survey was developed by a task force comprised of community members and educational leaders working with Goodwin Simon Strategic Research, an independent research group. During the month of February, the survey was administered to the following groups: 1. Parents of children currently enrolled in PUSD schools.

2. Parents of children of pre-school age who live in the Pasadena area.

3. Parents who chose to remove their children from PUSD schools.

4. Parents with children in charter or private schools.

Since an independent third party is administering the survey, it is completely anonymous. No one in the district will know who participated or be able to connect people to their responses.

“Receiving honest and candid responses will help us improve,” stated Superintendent McDonald. “We’ll use the responses to explore our strengths and weaknesses, and to become the district of choice for families.”

The survey results will also inform the development of a Master Plan intended to help the district make sound investments, solve long-term challenges, transform an aging infrastructure, and provide more innovative and equitable opportunities for all.

The Master Plan process is organized into four key areas: community, instruction, leadership, and facilities, each led by a member of the superintendent’s executive leadership team.

The community component, led by Mercy Santoro, assistant superintendent of school support services, will ensure that local assets are leveraged to offer cogent student supports. In addition to the survey, her team is working to develop and strengthen partnerships with the cities of Pasadena, Altadena, and Sierra Madre and with social services, philanthropic organizations, Pasadena City College, and other higher education institutions, arts, and industry leaders. Survey results will be made available to the

public in March 2016.

The instruction component, led by Chief Academic Officer Dr. Shawn Bird, will ensure that differentiated high-quality dynamic instruction results in quality learning for every student.

His team is implementing a managed instruction and performance empowerment initiative to improve student achievement, leading innovative design processes, and making plans to strategically invest in the professional development of teachers.

Leadership will be critical to the master planning process. As such, the superintendent’s executive leadership team is reviewing current school programs to ensure that high-quality educational options are available in every neighborhood. They will cross-reference updated demographic

information with survey results and school enrollment figures, and use the data collected to inform district decisions regarding the placement of signature pro-

grams, e.g., dual language, arts, STEM. They will also review school feeder patterns to ensure that if a student begins a signature program at one level, such as

language immersion, there will be a clear pathway for that student to continue in his or her selected area of focus when matriculating through PUSD.

GROUND BREAKING FORECLOSURE RULING!

The California Supreme Court ruled on February 18, 2016 that a homeowner has the right to challenge his lender's authority to foreclose based upon void assignments of the loan to third parties. The high court expressly upheld an earlier California Appellate opinion called Glaski v Bank of America.
