Club Ripples Waves Goodbye

A

piece of Long Beach history is officially up for sale.

Club Ripples owners and longtime couple Larry Herbert and John Garcia are asking for $4.2 million so they can bid farewell to their second home of the last three decades.

“Were going to Europe,” Herbert said.

“We’re going to see the world.”

The club has been struggling with declining business for years now; a fact that famously thrust them into the spotlight of Tabatha Coffey’s reality show on Bravo, “Tabatha Takes Over” in 2012. But the owners see the decline in business less as a reflection on Ripples itself and

more a reflection on how many options have been opened up to the LGBT community since they first began catering to their entertainment needs decades ago.

“You can go anywhere now,” Herbert says.

Ripples originally opened in 1972, and is regarded as Long Beach’s first and oldest gay dance bar.

“It’s a gay landmark,” Ripples bartender Randy Arevalos says. “It’s gay history.”

Herbert and Garcia slowly completed a buyout of the 12 original owners by 1980, describing the early years of Ripples as a go-to destination for Long Beach’s gay community.

“We had lines seven nights a week,” Garcia remembers.

Now? Not so much. One club-goer talks about how she used to love to come and party, but now comes to relax and have a simple drink or two because there aren’t too many people around.

The owners recognize the place isn’t what it used to be, but hope people don’t forget how much they went through to keep the place running during times that we’re much less accepting of the LGBT community.

“We’re tired, you know, things change,” Herbert says as he begins rattling off all they’d been through. “You had all these different things that went on over the course of the years. You had AIDS, recessions, rioting. We weathered it all, and

we made a success out of it.”

Part of the reason Garcia, 70, and Herbert, 63, may be so tired is because of their relentless work schedule, and inability to find a general manager suitable to their almost impossibly high standards.

“You have to have a good manager that you trust,” Herbert said. “I have a couple, but nobody runs it like you do.”

They’ve been able to accumulate many assets they hope justify their $4.2 million asking price. According to Herbert and Garcia all of their permits and licenses are in order, the venue has no marks on its record, they have beach parking grandfathered in for the next owner, an off-site caterer and liquor li-

cense and it is the only business with an entertainment license in Belmont Shore.

In addition to all this they own the adjacent liquor store, which is included in the asking price.

“That liquor store paid for the lean times here,” Herbert said. “It still does.”

They also alluded to the fact the city may be changing zoning regulations, allowing the next owners to build the establishment up to four stories high.

“I hope we have a bidding war,” Herbert said, “I know this place is worth it.”

The couple doesn’t mind if the next owners want to run a gay or straight business, they just want to see it be successful.

“I want someone that makes us proud with a new, good business here that makes me say, ‘I used to own that,’ ” Garcia explained.

As for it’s effect on the community, results will be mixed between a generation who grew up with Ripples as an iconic Long Beach location and one who might know nothing of the history behind the historic club.

“Some people will be upset, but I’m going to be blunt,” Herbert explains as

he shifts and leans forward in his seat, preparing to drop some knowledge on a younger generation. “These young kids nowadays don’t know what we’ve gone through to get to this point for them. We’re talking bulletproof windows, attacks by the Aryan Nation, police not going along with our program. We fought the battle for these kids today.”

Long Beach resident Paul Sigmund may have summed up what the Long Beach landmark meant to the community throughout the decades best in a heartfelt farewell email he wrote to the owners.

“So many whom are part or not part of our community, truly have no idea what anyone in the gay club and music business, especially in the 70’s, 80’s 90’s and today had to endure to succeed and survive,” Sigmund writes. “. . . the success of what you two created and will now be remembered for is nothing short of LEGENDARY.” Though it may be up for sale, legends never die. Hopefully, this Long Beach icon will be remembered for being more than just a “gay bar.”

Brian Frederick has made the transition, quite successfully, thank you, from bitch to boss.

W

hen you step into the 2,000 square foot facility that is 3PT. Studios (pronounced 3 point) you feel instantly at ease. It’s a combination of the enormous space – the equivalent of a musician’s playground – the mixture of chairs and couches that look straight out of a Craigslist ad, and the faint aroma of bud wafting through the air as with any proper music studio. But mostly it’s the man behind it all, Brian Frederick, Long Beach’s music man.

Since opening his studio in 2015, countless local bands have used Frederick’s studio as a place to turn their dreams into reality. Frederick is currently working with “Tall Walls”, the winners of 2015’s Buskerfest, helping them to produce a new album. Like many others who meet Frederick, they’ve felt nothing but good vibes.

“He’s great at keeping us relaxed and getting the best out of us,” said Dan Perkins, Tall Walls’s lead singer. “He’s produced tons of groups and you can feel the experience.”

Growing up in Long Beach Frederick was inspired at an early age by a neighbor who shared his name, Brian Halter.

Though the two were a decade apart in age, music transcended the difference. Following a brief stint in the Army after high school, Frederick was given the opportunity to build his first recording studio in his mentor’s garage.

“I still look up to the dude,” Frederick says. “Anytime there’s some weird shit going on I’m like, ‘Brian would know,’ and I’ll try to get his opinion on it.”

The next few years would be a grind to say the least. Frederick was a salesman for multiple cellphone carriers while hosting his garage studio and commuting to Culver City for no pay at another studio, simply because it was a chance to gain some much needed experience. How could he possibly manage to financially support himself you ask?

“I’ve probably had over 25-30 different jobs in 8 or 9 different industries,” Frederick recalls. “Day jobs pay for our dreams until the dreams take off, and what’s tripping me out is this shit took off.”

His next venture would be a small studio in what he likes to describe as “the butthole of Signal Hill.” But still he continued his grind back and forth from L.A. working multiple jobs, waiting to catch his break.

That break came in 2012 when he landed an internship at Serenity West Recording Studio in Hollywood.

“It took me a long time to figure out how to shut me up, and figure out what every one else was putting out in a room.”

That room would be rich with knowledge. The walls rang with an echo of famed voices like Adele, Justin Bieber, and Rhianna. Frederick was able to personally work with notable artists like Wiz Khalifa, The Backstreet Boys and DJ Quik – the latter nicknamed Frederick “Ivy League” because of his high level talent. Though he took more food orders than beat requests, Frederick couldn’t help but realize how close he was

to breaking through.

“It was just a special place to be,” Frederick recalled. “It’s like, I’m one step away. It was a dream and now I’m in the room with the clients taking their food orders and also helping the engineer . . . I was like the little bitch that could, just running around all over the place, making everybody happy.”

He would go all in at Serenity West, quitting all his other jobs. He admits it wasn’t fun, it was learning.

“I was perfecting something that I’d always been mediocre at, but that I always knew I could be great at,” Frederick recalls with confidence. “It taught me how to separate the money, the art and the craft and then sort of weave it all into one thing.”

After developing a working relationship with Isabella Summers, from Florence and the Machine, Frederick was confident he had the talent to compete with any other “Ivy League” producers in Hollywood. But even with the talent, life doesn’t always hand you opportunity, and interests between businesses and employees don’t always match up. Rather than deciding to climb the corporate ladder at an already well-established studio, Frederick decided to build his own ladder and hoped his talent and experience would cast aside any possible doubts about his production capability.

He also decided it was time to give others in his hometown the same opportunities he had worked so hard for and headed back to the LBC. “When you’re in a garage . . . that’s not how you get the best out of someone,” Frederick explains. “I wanted to be able to bring that space, room and quality down from L.A. to Long Beach, but at a price that everyone here can afford. There are no record labels paying for records down here; it’s baristas, servers and insurance salesmen and weed delivery dudes and all these different people that bust their asses to make a living and have a dream like I did 10 years ago.”

One year into his new venture he has developed an abundance of local clients, including the aforementioned Tall Walls, Bearwulf, Mr. Moonshine and Avi Buffalo. He has been determined to shine a light on the Long Beach music scene by giving extra attention to every detail.

“We’re trying to make music how it is supposed to be made,” Frederick explains. “If I’m more worried about the gig that’s coming in than the one that is in the room, were fucked.

I have to be able to give the people in the room everything.”

The man is not only providing a space for Long Beach musicians to make a name for themselves, he is training the next generation of audio engineers and producers through the Recording Radio and Film Connection program – where students work with real audio engineers in real studios. Like everyone else, his students recognize there is something unique about him and his process.

“He’s a great mentor,” says Michael Wiener, 22, in regard to his teacher Frederick. “He’s all about making artists and clients comfortable, and if you didn’t feel like it before, you will feel like he’s your friend by the time you leave.”

In the future, Frederick hopes he is able to expand his studio and help fund his projects through a pedal company, Stacks FX, which is housed in the same warehouse as his studio. Both 3PT. Studios and Stacks FX operate under Castalia Productions Company where Frederick is the COO. For now though, Frederick is still grinding, producing and providing the magic touch for Long Beach’s local musicians.

From “the little bitch that could” to self-made man, Frederick knows everything he’s gone through only makes the success sweeter.

“Life is compare and contrast, you know?” Frederick said.

“The highs aren’t as sweet without the lowest of lows.”

erlin Bistro is downtown Long Beach.

It’s a spot that allows the businessman to sit next to the faded hipster.

The large, white lanterns hanging from the exposed ceiling beams, the inviting glass doors and windows opening to the calm hustle of Fourth Street and the wood and brick walls lined with local art create a sense of Metropolitan comfort that you can’t find anywhere else in the LBC. My first time at Berlin two years ago was an innocent coffee stop, with a short conversation with some friends on the long, oak table at the center of the inside space preceding my tasting of one of the best latte’s on the West Coast.

Oh lord, I thought. This place will be death to my wallet someday

“We are an unusual European concept,” says Kerstin Kansteiner, Berlin’s owner and president of the 4th Street Business Association. “To me, we always divide up the worlds; we are a coffeehouse or we’re a restaurant or we’re a bar. But you can’t have it all.

But we’re like ‘Yes you can.’ ” After moving from her hometown of Bielefeld, Germany in 1989, Kansteiner has brought with her not only an easygoing business attitude, but a knack for making things come together in an effective way.

Upon her arrival she noticed a scary lack of cafes in downtown. So she decided to establish Portfolio’s, named numerous times the No. 1 coffee shop in Long Beach and quintessential landmark of downtown.

“You don’t know until you open up the doors or not if something’s going to work,” Kansteiner said. “But it did.”

But Berlin’s upbringing was a test for Kansteiner.

Wary about the downtown neighborhood, she talked with Fingerprints owner Rand Foster about the safety of the location.

Today, with little to no security guards and minor disturbances, they laugh about their early fears.

“Now we understand that people still think that this is what downtown is,” Kansteiner said. “But it’s changed dramatically. In the four years that we’ve been here, people live here now, they come out, they walk around. It all works.”

The attached space of Fingerprints allows for an eclectic series of background music while you sip on a heavenly Lavender Palmer.

Fresh ingredients from local farmer’s markets make the menu. There’s a medium amount of choices, which helps alleviate order stress. The menu also changes seasonally, which makes you miss the plates you grow to love while spicing up each time you glance at the menu.

arrick “Gary” Shofner remembers when business boomed; back before the personal computer was king.

Customers would be lined up to the corner waiting for him to open up each morning—even on Saturdays.

All kinds of people were coming through his door: congressmen, a former captain of the Queen Mary, even Clint Eastwood once bought a used machine from him.

He was making so much money he didn’t know what to do with it, a thousand dollars a day, every day.

He decided to hang up a big neon sign outside his North Long Beach shop—Gary’s Typewriter Repair.

Boy, weren’t those the good ol’ days.

Today, from the street, 833 E. South St. looks abandoned. The old neon sign now sits discarded on the roof.

The storefront window is veiled by an uninviting, camel-colored scrim pulled down in such a way as to suggest the end of a play. On the window’s glass pane, Gary’s Typewriter Repair Service is scrawled in white acrylic paint that better resembles old whiteout—chipped and faded from three decades under the sun.

Beneath that, traces of graffiti someone’s haphazardly tried to remove, threatens to overtake the business lettering. Like a museum exhibit, frozen in time, the placard resting at the bottom right corner

Even if he wanted to turn to closed, he couldn’t get to it, the shop’s too cluttered, he says.

Sometimes customers joke about passing by at 2 a.m. and curiously seeing the open sign.

Despite its blighted appearance, Gary can still be found inside this obscure hole-in-the-wall, like a modern-day blacksmith, hunched over a hundred-year-old cast-iron machine. That’s if he’s not out on a service call.

He admits he’s not going to be a millionaire anytime soon, but being a modern-day typewriter repairman isn’t a complete oxymoron. He’s kept busy by law firms and doctor’s offices that still use electric typewriters for transcriptions. Most of all, the rise of interest in these proto-word-processors by anachronistic youth and collectors has helped him stay afloat.

When asked about his theory on the typewriter’s appeal today, he said, “If you’re a writer it comes from here,” gesturing toward his head, “to your fingers and right to the paper there. You can sit down, not have to worry about beepers and buzzers, and then you can let your true thoughts come out.”

Even Gary himself is a true throwback. He wears a beard with patches of white and retro-looking glasses. He could pass for a Black version of Walter White. His hands are thick as broken-in leather, and he speaks with an expressive voice

Even in this day and age, North Long Beach’s Gary Shofner can fill a niche as a typewriter repairman

that tends to run away from him sometimes.

He says he’s always been fascinated by the inner-workings of machines. “As a kid I liked to tinker ‘round with stuff. Of course none of my parents liked that because I used to take stuff apart and see how it worked. I’d say, what makes this clock work and so I’d take it apart.”

As a young man, he received a grant to take a three year intensive course in typewriter repair at a trade school, which was later supplemented by some training at IBM. His first job as a traveling typewriter repairman with the nowdefunct Crocker National Bank took him all across California.

After bouncing around a few other companies, he decided to go into business for himself.

When Gary opened up his shop in 1978, rent was $35 a month. “Can you believe that? Now it’s 20 times more,” he says.

The inside is about as big as an oversized walk-in closet. It’s dingy and smells distinctly of typewriter oil and machine grease. Every surface is coated with a thin layer of grime and nostalgia. ehind the curtains that obscure the storefront window, metal shelves hold gutted typewriters of every sort. The shelves are so full with machines, they seem to be disgorging their contents onto the floor, parts of which are piled half-way to the roof with these metallic dinosaurs.

explains. “The minute I throw something away, somebody’ll walk in here and say, ‘This little part broke off,’ and I’ll say, ‘Darn, that’s the machine I threw out.’”

Nothing’s changed in the shop since the 1980s, he says. He points toward the foot of a metal mountain near the front of the store. “See that computer right there. Remember that DOS computer right there.

That’s been sitting there since 19—whenever that computer came out.”

Behind the front counter is a small workbench. On it sits a 1937 Royal typewriter that he’s been hard at work restoring, along with an assortment of lubricants and small metal parts. “Sometimes I gotta make parts, weld things. I used to be able to go to downtown [Los Angeles] and pick up parts.

Not anymore.”

He lifts up an IBM Selectric that’s laying on the front counter and begins inspecting the underbelly. The intricacy of the mechanisms look like a steampunk’s wet dream. He points at different parts that don’t appear to be interconnected in any conceivable way but says each one depends on the other. One small imperfection and “you’ll be typing a ‘U’ when you press the ‘R’ key.”

He admits that when he gets a machine that’s particularly difficult, it consumes him. Lying in bed at night, and even in his dreams, he’ll mentally manipulate parts around in order to come up with a fix. “I love it,” he says with a grin.

“I still love it even after all these years.”

F

rom making sculptures to poetry and creative writing, the new executive director of the Arts Council for Long Beach is quite an artist herself. Griselda Suárez started in the position on March 1 but has been a board member since last fall. In addition to being an artist, she is also a lecturer of Chicana/o and Latina/o at California State University Long Beach, teaching writing, history, arts and culture.

The Arts Council is a non-profit organization that promotes, advocates for, and helps fund the arts in Long Beach, according to its website. Its mission is to foster creativity and culture, enlivening communities and enabling a thriving economy.

“As executive director, I’m excited to embrace the mission of the Arts Council,” she said. “To really be part of making Long Beach a great civic arts city and being able to have our residents, artists, community organizations, and cultural institutions make this a better, lively, and enriched city.”

The Arts Council staff helps young artists with grant programs and with community organizations involving art. They offer a variety of grants that are given to artists for smaller projects each month, and an even larger yearly grant.

“We have a great vision and focus on how

to become a great support in marketing, facilitating artists and communities to talk, to engage, to produce and ultimately to advocate for arts in the city,” Suarez said. “And it’s a very interesting time in Long Beach because the city is now looking at a study to see if we can have the ‘1 Percent for the Arts’ program again.”

The ‘1 Percent for the Arts’ is a program that ran from the 1980s to 2012 in Long Beach, running under the Redevelopment Agency, which the Arts Council was a partner in, Suarez said. Last week, City Council approved a study to see if it’s feasible to bring that program back or something like it. It will focus on a fund that will be accessed throughout the city, so that all artists and residences feel like they are being heard and listened to, as far as cultural arts or expressions in their neighborhoods.

Growing up in East L.A., Suarez says that the beginning of her artist career started when she was probably about 5 years old.

She was first interested in visual arts like painting and sculpturing, being a part of civic art programs in high school that made community murals in L.A. Suarez got her bachelor of arts in Studio Arts and Latin American literature in Spanish. However, after finishing her senior exhibit which were sculptures covered in different texts, she realized that maybe she was more of a writer.

Suarez went on to the New College in San Francisco, where she got her masters in writing and her Master of Fine Arts in writing. After graduation, she mainly published short stories and essays, until she grew into poetry.

Her first collection of poetry, Concrete River Boulevard, came out in 2009, for which she was nominated for the California Book Award. “They were poems about my growing up in East L.A. and the collection really shaped this time in my life where it felt like I was trying to find who I was in so many different identities,” she said. “Am

I straight? Gay? Queer? Am I Chicana or Mexican-American? What is this citizenship thing; and what does it mean to be an American?”

Suarez has lived in Long Beach for 12 years with her wife who is a Long Beach native. It took a while to adjust to living in Long Beach, but now Suarez said she considers herself a full on “Long Beach girl.”

She is also a part of the Lambda Literary Foundation and the Associated Writers Program. You can find Suarez reading her work at the Sister Spit show at 7:30, March 30, at the Art Theatre in Long Beach.

helsey Sanchez sits at the front of a dimly lit café backroom holding a borrowed guitar in her lap. Seoul, her regular guitar, is at the shop this day. Her pose is stoic: legs crossed, a knee-high boot kicked out front, while a salmon-colored dress drapes down around her.

Even before she sings, all eyes and ears are on her.

“Chelsey is larger-than-life; from her tall stature to her captivating stage presence,” says Nathan Douglas, a Long Beach songwriter and fellow singer, who met Sanchez at an open mic last year.

When she breaks into song, her voice takes over the room, sucking all the air out of it.

Literally — one is left wondering how big a breath is needed in order to summon such a big voice.

Blue and brooding, she peppers her vocals with ululation and full-throated growls. Some say she’s a throwback to Nina Simone or Joan Baez. But she’s quick to remind them that it’s all her.

“The worst thing you can tell a singer,” the 21-year-old Sanchez says, “is that they sound like someone else.”

A songstress since she was 5, the first number she wrote was titled “Turn Off That Heater.” Set to the tune of “Viva Las Vegas,” it was about her mom’s habit of keeping the house too warm.

Her love for Elvis carried through to elementary school where she would serenade students on the playground–mostly unsolicited, the Mexican-born singer now admits in hindsight.

Sanchez discovered her love for performing in second grade after her mom entered her in a talent show. In middle school she started to seriously write music because she sounded funny trying to sing the Britney Spears songs popular amongst her friends.
