Many larger publications do not necessarily cover local issues and events consistently; therefore, we make it our objective to connect local government, businesses, and other organizations within the community to foster collaboration and subsequent growth within the city. The Edge will feature an investigative cover story, local artists, play and movie reviews, varying Top 20 picks (the best brunch spots, vegan restaurants, happy hour...), and a calendar with Long Beach’s most interesting events.

Long Beach Increases Use of Renewable Energy

lobal warming isn’t going away anytime soon, and according to most scientists, it’s here to stay. The media bombard us with the reminder that while Greenland is melting, and sea levels are rising, the end result is we are all going to die.

California is feeling the devastating effects of the drought and El Nino is beginning to sound like a fairy tale. Greenhouse gases caused by fossil fuels are heating our atmosphere, quickly turning the planet into a hot, sweaty mess that no one knows how to clean up.

The country’s dependence on vehicles, and therefore its dependence on fossil fuels, is a huge contribution to the carbon footprint. Transportation in the United States runs on 90 percent petroleum-based fuels, which is made of gasoline and diesel, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

However, Long Beach is taking steps to curb its greenhouse gases. The city is now using renewable fuels for over 18 percent of its fleet, according to a news release. The fleet includes city-owned vehicles such as police cars, fire trucks, refuse trucks, and street sweepers. Of its 2,185 vehicles, 393 of them are powered by renewable fuels.

and vegetable oils. Using biodiesel and renewable diesel fuels can reduce carbon dioxide emissions from 20 to 60 percent, compared to traditional diesel fuels, according to the Diesel Technology Forum.

Diesel fuel has also been linked to cancer, premature death, and other health problems. According to the California Air Resources Board, renewable diesel does reduce emissions and health risk from particulate matter in diesel exhaust, a toxic air contaminant.

The other type of fuel is renewable liquid natural gas (RNG), also known as bio methane, which comes from landfills and animal waste. RNG is sourced from methane, which is combusted as renewable gases, which reduces about 21 times less potent greenhouse gases than methane released directly into the atmosphere. Both types of fuels should reduce greenhouse gas and tailpipe emissions, cost the same or less than current fuels, and do not require change to the city’s vehicles or fueling infrastructure, the release said.

Oliver Cruz, fuel operations program officer, said he manages the city’s fueling infrastructure and fuel management operations. Essentially, his division makes sure that all the vehicles can fill up their tanks at the end of the day.

“I looked into environmental benefits, fuel performance and costs,” Cruz said. “Once we received approval, I contacted our suppliers and placed the orders.”

Now all of the city’s diesel vehicles are using renewable diesel. The city gets its renewable diesel from Merrimac Petroleum and renewable liquid natural gas (LNG) from Applied LNG, Cruz said. More alternate fuel vehicles are being added to the fleet by the end of this year, he said.

The Unseen Side of

M

ost people know Snoop Dogg for his laid back lyrical delivery and consumption of marijuana. However, for Duke Givens, Snoop Dogg is more than Snoop Dogg. He’s Calvin Broadus Jr., and he’s a friend.

Givens, a Long Beach-based photographer and documentarian, will be sharing his private collection of photos at “Snoop Dogg: The Early Years” at MADE in Long Beach. MADE is located at 240 Pine Ave. Givens and Snoop Dogg both grew up in Long Beach’s Sixth District. As children, they were Pop Warner football teammates. As teenagers, they attended Long Beach Polytechnic High School and graduated in 1989.

Long Beach in the 1980s was a hub of gang violence. Givens said he watched kids he grew up with join rival gangs and turn on each other.

After graduation, Givens joined the Air Force. “I left a gang war in the city and in 1990s Desert Storm came about,” he said. “So I went to war. And when I came home there was still remnants of a gang war going on.”

After being discharged from the Air Force, Givens returned to Long Beach, where his parents bought him his first camera. Givens said he had no idea what he was supposed to do with it, so he enrolled in a photography class at Long Beach City College. “Once I saw my first photo being developed, I knew this was something I wanted to do,” said Givens.

The cover for Snoop Dogg’s 1994 album “Murder Was the Case” was photographed by Givens in front of World Famous VIP Records in Long Beach. Givens was hanging out with Snoop Dogg at the record store and decided to take a picture of him. “Once Snoop saw the photo he said ‘that’s it, that’s my album cover’,” Givens said.

Givens said he wants this exhibit to show a different side of Snoop Dogg, a side that most people will never get to see.

Givens recalls a party for Snoop Dogg after the rapper was signed to his first record label. Givens said he was sitting and someone passed him a joint. Snoop Dogg grabbed the joint, telling Givens he didn’t need this in his life.

“You know, [Snoop] helped me become the person I am today,” said Givens.

In 1995, Givens published his “Stop Gang Violence” calendar. The calendar featured Snoop Dogg, Nate Dogg, and Warren G on the cover. Givens interviewed current gang members on why children shouldn’t join gangs. The calendar was filled with their photos and comments.

Givens said the calendar was “for the next generation.” Those he interviewed knew the dangers of gang life and did not want children following in their footsteps. However, Givens said most of those featured continued their life in gangs, and are now either dead or in prison.

“What it all goes back to is families and fathers,” Givens said. “Generations emulate what they see.”

In the 2013 documentary “The Game Don’t Change, Just the Players,” Givens explores what happens when “fathers don’t do what they’re supposed to.” The film is from the perspective of all races, something Givens thinks is important, as “we are all one” human race.

Currently, Givens is working on a follow up to “The Game Don’t Change,” titled “Emerald in the Rough.”

photographs of firemen, police, and other public servants. “I want to share a message of positivity and hope,” Givens said.

As for the future, Givens is optimistic. “I’m inspired and I’m hopeful in the generation coming up,” said Givens. “They have the keys, the tools, the wisdom, the mental fortitude to the change we want to see in this world.”

“Snoop Dogg: The Early Years” will run through March. At the exhibit, Givens will be selling prints and donating part of the proceeds to Ron Palmer basketball and Jackrabbit boxing.

Open Mic Nights Free Various Locations (Some places require one drink purchase to perform) Find a spot to release your inner creative spirit in front of a bunch of people you don’t know, or watch a bunch of people brave the stage and listen to some local poets and musicians. Viento y Agua, located at 4007 East 4th St. hosts a free open mic every Thursday from 6:30 p.m. - 9 p.m. (562-434-1182), but there are others throughout the city waiting for you to discover them.

That’s right, there’s a Japanese garden in the LBC, and it resides on the CSULB campus. Dedicated in 1981, the 1.3 acre garden blends a traditional and elegant Japanese garden with the southern California landscape and is even home to a school of coy fish. It is closed Mondays and Saturdays, but has free admission the rest of the week unless a special event is taking place.

What’s a library you ask? It’s this magical place that people used to go get information from before the internet.

Long Beach has one of the largest cyclist discount programs in the nation. Every Saturday, all restaurants and shops with a “Bike LB” sticker offer discounts and promotions for people who show up on bikes. Don’t feel like buying anything, no problem. One of the great things about Long Beach is its small town feel.

Well, if you’re looking for a unique concert of sorts, you can find one of the many buskers and listen to some of the city’s most authentic music. Did you know that Long Beach is home – pun intended – to the skinniest house in America. Built on a 10x50 foot. plot, the house has been featured by Ripley’s Believe it or Not and The Guinness Book of World Records.

The Walter Pyramid is much more than just a hub for CSULB athletics; it is one of only four true pyramids in the United States. At 18 stories tall, the structure cost $22 million to build and is a staple of the university and the city of Long Beach. It’s also pretty cool to see up close at no cost.

But this is the cheap list, so we’re fine with a simple leisurely stroll through a beautiful place.

If you don’t want to get out and do something cheap for yourself, at least do it for your furry friend, they’re dying to get out and explore the city.

Why not take them down to Rosie’s dog beach. In memory of Rosie the bulldog, Rosie’s Dog Beach is the only off-leash dog beach in L.A. County. Take advantage of it and give your pooch some relaxation time in the sand (if you have one, if not then there’s 19 other things for you so stop complaining).

Yes I might be pushing the rules I set for cheap a little, but students DO get in for $15 at the playhouse, which is right at our limit. The venue is a great spot to watch a play with its up close and personal Mainstage. We didn’t always have TV and movies, people used to have no room for error. Check out a play and I promise it won’t be your last.

Cruise up to Hilltop Park for an awesome 360 degree view of the city.

Perfect for an end to a cheap date or a lonely stroll. The park offers picnic benches and grills as well.

So there you have it. No longer do you have the excuse of “I’m broke” to keep your ass planted on the couch. This city offers plenty of choices for those with a light wallet. Pick one, pick two or if you dare pick all twenty and enjoy a day the freedom of free stuff!

According to its website, “The mission of First Fridays is to promote and support local artists and musicians by providing them with an outlet to showcase their work. Every first Friday night of the month, participating Bixby Knolls businesses will unite to promote local artists and musicians through extended operating hours.”

Simply put, it is a great way to experience the revitalized Bixby Knolls

Support the locals by stopping by one of Long Beach’s farmer’s markets. It’s a great way to get outside, grab some cheap fresh produce and even listen to some local talent that usually happens to be playing somewhere in the vicinity.

he former soldier opens his medicine cabinet. Rows of orange prescription pill bottles line the shelves. Percocet, Prozac, Xanex, Vicodin, the list goes on, all with their own deleterious side-effects.

Like so many before him, 30-year-old Chris, spent 4 ½ years in the military, did his tour of duty in Iraq, and came back home with a case of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

The trauma he endured during his time in the military spiraled into prescription pill abuse as well as cocaine and heroin addictions. He endured a bout of homelessness, a stint in a commune, time at home with his family and a spell in rehab.

“You don’t know how messed up you are until other people tell you how fucked up you are,” he says. “When you get out [of the military] you feel alone. You feel like a hermit crab.”

But unlike the many tragic tales of destitute veterans, Chris’s story doesn’t end there.

With the encouragement of his brother, he used the GI Bill to go to Le Cordon Bleu cooking school in Hollywood.

Today, his resume as a fine dining cook and caterer spans more than five years and includes eateries such as the Foundry on Melrose and Delphin Restaurant in the W Hotel in West Hollywood.

But it’s the special ingredient he’s been adding to his cooking for the last two years that has earned Chris, aka Chef Nugs (his nickname in the Army was Chicken Nuggets), a lot more attention than he could ever imagine.

Chef Nugs medicates his food with shatter, a cannabis concentrate that looks more like amber-colored glass and is considered to be the purest type of THC extract.

His five-star culinary training combined with the his knowledge of cannabis extraction methods have earned him an international following.

“Hollywood is the mecca of food and marijuana,” Chef Nugs says. “I’m the godfather of this game.”

And though he may boast like Tony Montana, his motivation couldn’t be different.

“I do this for the vets,” he said the other day while in Long Beach dropping off a “package” to a former Marine who had done tours of duty in Iraq and Afghanistan. His company sells and delivers medical marijuana and products infused with cannabis, though he says he gives away up to half of his stock.

Girl scout cookies, knives and nail stamping. Oh my!

It seems like you can buy almost anything at the Long Beach Comic Expo . . . even comic books.

A

ttendees at Long Beach Comic Expo are typically there to share their newest cosplay, meet their pop culture idols, and buy comic books and comic merchandise.

But what if they wanted a new set of knives? Or a Tibetan singing bowl?

Attracting several thousand comic and pop culture fans, LBCE is often thought of as the little brother to the Long Beach Comic Con in the fall. But having two similarly named conventions in the same year in the same place doesn’t diminish the crowd.

“They seem to be art and comic fans,” cartoonist and illustrator Patrick Scullin said of the crowd that LBCE attracts. Scullin writes and illustrates the webcomic Super Siblings and has attended both Long Beach conventions. Scullin notes that other conventions seem to draw more crowds for the celebrity autographs, but that isn’t the case for LBCE. Cosplayer Angi Viper had always attended the convention in the fall, but really enjoyed her first time at LBCE. She was there to promote an animated steampunk film called Hullabaloo.

“I love animation and I’ve been fascinated with steampunk,” Viper said. She was dressed as Veronica Daring, the main character of Hullabaloo. In all she has dressed as about 50 different characters while attending comic conventions.

LBCE, now in its seventh year, has managed to offer a wide array of exhibitors. Some are quite logical, like The Jerky Hut. With beef jerky flavors like Whiskey BBQ, Sweet Garlic, and Ghost Pepper, employee Gabriel Vierra describes it as “perfect gaming food.”

Vierra says that The Jerky Hut has shown at several other comic conventions as well.

In non-edible goods, there is a booth selling “scientific and industrial artifacts.” Proprietor Bobbie Roberts sells antiques and unique items at The Rational Past. When comic fans dress up as their favorite characters, they sometimes need strange items to complete the outfit. While most prefer recreations of

these items, Roberts says, “There are no fakes on these tables.”

Roberts has been to several other comic conventions including Wondercon, which has moved from the Anaheim Convention Center to the Los Angeles Convention Center this year. She will also be in attendance at the first Silicon Valley Comic Con, put on by Steve Wozniak.

“There’s a lot of engineers, a lot of creative people,” Roberts says in regards to why she keeps coming back to comic conventions.

“We sell several slide rules.”

Knives and other replica weapons aren’t uncommon to see on the convention floor. But the knives of CutCo aren’t from any TV show or movie, they’re just for cutting.

“We usually do home shows and car shows,” says employee Conor Kelly. Part of their target market is families, and there were plenty of children and parents roaming the Long Beach Convention Center.

While it is CutCo’s first time at LBCE, they do have some items that would appeal to a collector crowd. The KA-BAR is combat knife used by Marines. They also have a variety of pocket knives.

“We want to throw in something that is totally different,” says Natalie Ng, owner of Dreams of Tibet. I was attracted to this booth by the colorful bags embroidered with skulls and peace signs. Ng says they get most of their sales at the end of the day, when attendees have seen everything else LBCE has to offer.

Ng notes that most comic fans are also interested in items with a spiritual quality like Tibetan singing bowls. She demonstrates by tapping a wooden baton against the bowl and then firmly pressing around the edge of the metal bowl to resonate sound.

Toward the front of the convention center there was a scent of nail polish. Moyou Nails was performing sample nail stamping. Girls, and some guys, were stepping up to the small podiums and selecting a symbol to be painted on one of their finger nails. Moyou Nails had been attending LBCE for three years and even attended the holy grail, San Diego Comic Con, said employee Reyna Espinoza.

More in line with the typical image of a comic book fan, Sires Crown sells bespoke wooden framed eyewear. Sires Crown presents at around 40 shows in a year and is based out of downtown Los Angeles.

“We work with local artists,” said employee Wesley Gordon. Gordon showed off his frames which depicted a scene of the old west on one side and a woman on a motorcycle on the other. A display showed off other frames that featured characters from Hulk to Batman.

It was the first time for Girl Scout troop 753 to be attending LBCE. While they were selling the classic cookies at the booth, other members of the troop were there to learn.

“Some of the girls are in a workshop for their Comic Artist Badge,” said Jennifer Alvarez as she stood next to her daughter.

The display on the table included cookies decorated as various Star Wars characters.

The girls were excited to be in the middle of a comic convention and were already planning on coming back in the fall for Long Beach Comic Con. As I walked away from the table, they were arguing on whether or not they would dress up as members of the light side or the dark side of the Force.

Netflix and Hulu haven’t killed A this video store couple walks into Broadway Video at the corner of Redondo Avenue. and Broadway Avenue. Soon they begin to browse the vast collection of films the video store holds.

The man is tall, sporting a greying beard and is wearing glasses and a tan hat. , “What do you think ‘Fantastic Four’ ”? to his partner, Linda Nelson.

He approaches the counter and tells owner Carl Detweiler that he is going to place a pile of films he intends to rent for the next three days right next to the register.

Soon after, a woman walks in and asks if “Black Mass” is available to rent – one of the newest available titles at the store this week.

Detweiler leaves the register to try to help her find the film in the new releases section of the store, but has no luck. Fortunately he finds a copy of the film behind the counter that someone has just returned.

About 25 minutes have passed. The bearded man and partner Linda are still searching for movies to watch. By now he has piled a tower of 12 movies next to the register, yet he continues to search for more.

“They have a great selection, I think the only new movie we have seen in theaters was Star Wars over Christmas,” Nelson said.

“Before then we haven’t been to a movies in so long I can’t even remember when was the last time we went.”

Nelson used to go to a different video store in downtown, but started coming down to Broadway Video consistently about six years ago because, truth be told, there aren’t many places like this left.

Video stores in Long Beach might be somewhat of the exception in a time when Blockbuster has closes hundreds of its stores nationwide and Netflix and Hulu streaming services reign supreme.

It’s not just Broadway Video that has continued on in this digital age, but Starr Video in Bixby Knolls still has customers shuffling DVD cases from the shelves and both Hawaii Video and TDA Video on Anaheim Street carry a selection of Vietnamese DVDs for rent.

Nelson showed off her collection of movies she and her partner have decided to rent for the next three days. The movies include “Transformers,” “The Hobbit,” “Pompeii,” “The Signal” and “Stranded.”

Halfway through the list, another customer with two DVDs in hand exiting Broadway Video exclaimed, “When are you going to watch all of those!”

“Lawrence of Arabia” and “Closer Encounters of the Third Kind” to name a few more films on her haul.

By now another couple has walked in. This time it’s Jason Burns and Michelle McGovern who said they live down the street. They return “Savages,” “Safe House” and “Sicario” into the return drop box.

Immediately Burns walks up to the counter and asks Detweiler if “Black Mass” is available to rent. Detweiler looks concerned because he thinks he has just checked out the last copy just a few minutes before.

Burns said jokingly, “But I called to make a reservation!” and to his credit he had, but he doesn’t seemed too bothered that “Black Mass” is no longer available. Instead, Burns asks Detweiler to help him find some other movies on his watch list.

“Where can I find ‘The Last Witch Hunter’?”

Burns shouted from the aisles while Detweiler typed the name of the film into his database and shouted back in what section the film could be found. This goes on for several minutes; Burns shouts and Detweiler taps away at his computer. In the end the couple has picked out four movies.

Detweiler searches one last time for “Black Mass” and alas he finds one copy behind the counter. Burns literally jumps with joy and fist bumps me.

“I come here pretty much every other day of the week,” Burns said. “There has been a lot of movies we haven’t been able to see because we have been so busy in the past, and we are now able to see them because this place is in our backyard.”

Burns and McGovern have tried the streaming things in the past, but have never been satisfied.

“I don’t stream or download movies

because it’s too expensive,” McGovern said.

“It tends to use up your data and for me it just ends up being more expensive than going out to the theaters.”

And these aren’t the only things McGovern enjoys about renting from Broadway Video.

“It also doesn’t take as long for the movies that were in theaters to be out on the shelves here as much as it did before,” McGovern said.

Warner Bros., Universal Studios and Fox have restrictions on how long it takes until a new film can be released onto Redbox rental services. The agreement with Redbox and these studios means that a movie can be found 28 days after their initial home-video releases, no such restrictions prohibit local independent video stores like Broadway Video from stocking up with brand new releases.

The same can be said about films and television shows on Netflix, Hulu or Amazon as it’s not always easy for movie buffs or tv nerds to be caught up with the latest films or shows unless they see them in theaters or buy the DVDs. Broadway Video has approximately 24,000 DVDs and Blu-rays to credit to the stores collection with multiple copies of various films and television shows “Before ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ came out in theaters all of our copies of the previous Star Wars were checked out constantly,” Detweiler said. “People really wanted to get a hold of them to catch up before the new one came out.”

Good luck trying to find that in a Redbox or on Netflix – your best bet is to buy the physical copy or purchase a digital version from iTunes for a hefty $19.99 each.

from Broadway Video, but there is no fee for membership. On Tuesdays and Thursdays films that aren’t new releases are $2 for three days. The regular price for a movie is $3.25 for a three-day rental. There is a lot to chose from the classics like Star Wars to close to 500 independent gay and lesbian films, the growing collection of children’s films and yes, the not so kid friendly adults-only section in the back of the store.

“We get a lot of walk-ins from the neighborhood,” Detweiler said. “But we also have customers that come in from north Long Beach, Seal Beach and Lakewood because they don’t have anything like this close to home.”

The establishment has been around for 31 years according to Detweiler, and he has been the owner for the past eight years. He used to work with financial home loans, but in 2007 the previous owner was going to sell it and instead of having his favorite video store go away he decided to buy it.

“I wanted to keep renting them,” Detweiler said. “And now they are all mine.”

He said Tuesdays can get a bit hectic as people want to see the latest movies, and people often call to make reservations. Detweiler has always been true to this format of film, and is proud to have never subscribed to Netflix or any other streaming services.

“One of the keys to success is the prime location which includes restaurants, bars and clothing stores. People walk in here and are astonished we are still here, and able to keep this place alive,” Detweiler said. “Every person who works here loves movies too, and we’re always happy to recommend films to our customers or help them in any way that we can and that’s an interaction you can’t get from a streaming service.”

Nugs says medical marijuana has helped his relationships, his sleep, and even his appetite. “I only eat because I smoke,” he admits.

Built from scratch, his medical marijuana delivery service is a lifeline to many Californians, especially those who are invalid or bedridden and especially in cities like Long Beach, where medical marijuana has been in a legal quagmire for years. The city council recently voted to hold off on allowing medical marijuana dispensaries within city limits. Initiatives to allow dispensaries or deliveries won’t be on the ballot until the Nov. 8 elections.

“California is still the wild, wild West concerning marijuana,” Chef Nugs says. “I’m in a grey area. [The police] don’t know what to do with me because I make food.”

His most popular product is his line of Stoney Sauces, which includes medicated mustard, ketchup, soy sauce, hot sauce, and maple syrup.

“I didn’t have to do a lot of testing with the sauces,” Nugs says. “I usually got the right combination of shatter to sauce on the second or third try.”

Social media has been integral to Chef Nugs’s success: “Holy shit, the Internet is amazing,” he says.

“It’s all about hard work,” Nugs says. “And it all started with YouTube and Instagram.”

His Instagram account has more than 17,000 followers and documents his convention and festival appearances as well as his general day-to-day activities. His YouTube channel hosts his 10-episode cooking show “Cooking with Cannabis with Chef Nugs.” In one of his more popular videos, he demon-

strates how to prepare a medicated Thanksgiving dinner. He also recorded 10 shows for Breal.TV called “Highly Seasoned.”

The Internet has helped spread his name and brand worldwide. Although prohibited by law to mail cannabis products anywhere outside of California, he still gets requests from as far as Australia, South America, and the Netherlands.

Business is so good, he had to buy a second phone. In the short amount of time he’s out delivering in Long Beach, he’s gotten more than 20 new requests for his services.

“So many people need help. We are hardly scratching the surface,” he says.

The network Nugs has built is more than just about delivering the medical. It’s a community that supports each other, be it with legal assistance, suicide prevention, or babysitting.

“Relationships are much harder with PTSD,” he admits. “It’s hard to be a dad with PTSD, but it’s getting better.”

This week Chef Nugs heads to Dallas where he’ll be speaking at a veterans conference in support of federal legalization of medical marijuana.

“We should be able to pick up medical marijuana through the same VA window that we pick up Percocet,” he says.

Five years down the road, Chef Nugs hopes to be an at-home dad and an at-home chef.

“I want to live off the fucking grid, man,” he says in between puffs off a blunt.

“I’m trying to be the most functioning pothead. I’m trying to change the image of potheads. You have to live it; you have to be the change you want to see.”

he first, quarterly Goddess Gathering is coming to Long Beach on, March. 20, from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. at Yoga on 3rd at 301 Atlantic Ave. What is a Goddess Gathering? Kawani Brown, founder of the Goddess Gathering, says, “This is about connecting, and finding your village. All women who experience their first periods – they are welcome to come.

Older women who are out of that now and have wisdom to share with us – absolutely [all women are welcome].”

Brown and her husband Edward Yniguez, event coordinator of Goddess Gathering, have workshops and speakers, on-site massages and acupuncture, organic vegan lunches, herbal remedies and postpartum tonics, sound healing and meditation, and henna planned for the day to dedicate a time and space to build a sisterhood in the city of Long Beach.

Their idea for an intimate, wisdom-sharing space for women seeded from the novel, “The Red Tent,” written in 1997 by Anita Diamant.

The novel is a story extension of a minor biblical character, Dinah, who hears generations of stories about womanhood within her village tent. Cross culturally, the Red Tent, sometimes called by a different name, is a place women congregate, usually while on their menstrual cycle. They meet for female support during transitions of womanhood, such as for birthing, baby care, or other female specific needs.

However, the Goddess Gathering, a modernized version of the Red Tent is not just for mothers, or mothers-to-be. It is for all women and all women’s needs. The idea bloomed from Brown’s own needs, and from her female friends in other women’s groups. Often at meetings, she heard questions about menstrual cups, or essential oils. She heard women speak about how they are feeling burnt out because they are taking care of their family

and work before they take care of themselves.

In general, she found a lack of information for local women’s needs, but more importantly, a lack of space to connect all the women of the neighborhood to share this female-centric knowledge. Brown describes the feeling as, “feeling sort of like you lost yourself and your sisters, your circle, your village, and feeling alone.”

Brown knows she’s not alone, and wants other women to know they have sisters close by. As a tribute to womanhood, the Goddess Gathering will be informational, but also a private place for women to share stories. She says, “All the workshops and the people who will be speaking [are] very intimate. Everyone there will just be sharing what they now, and then it’s a ‘leave it all here’ kind of thing.

There’s nothing to be apprehensive about or feel like you can’t say or you can’t share. You leave it all there in the Red Tent.”

One of things Brown noticed was how hard it was to access many female products, or discuss topics such as the womb, or womb health and healing. She has dedicated time at the Goddess Gathering to talk about alternative menstrual products, accompanied with a show-and-tell. She says, “So cups, sponges, cloth pads – things where you have to research and figure out and find information. It’s not like you can go anywhere and see those things in person. A lot of times, you’re ordering online. Or you don’t really know someone personally who have used them.”

There will be a focus on self-healing and care as a form rediscovering oneself. Massage therapists and acupuncturists will discuss different physical practices that are particular to women’s ailments and health. There will be acupuncture and massage on-site, so participants can experience this knowledge first hand.

Along with physical female rehabilitation, there will be several types of meditation. The day will begin in a circle of meditation, led by a teacher who teaches women how to create

a meditation space in one’s home. Then, to come full circle, the day will end with sound healing meditation. Brown says, “she bathes you in sound. So there is a cymbal, tuning forks, and drums, and you relax and let that positive energy in.”

The Goddess Gathering is about, “learn[ing] from older women and sit[ing] in a group and feel[ing] like womanhood is wonderful. . . It’ll be good to know that these kinds of things do

happen and you’re not by yourself. You’re not alone and this is very powerful.”
