A Walmart closes and now

Each seemed to be emptier than the next.

With prices discounted by 75 percent, it didn’t take long for the downtown Long Beach Walmart to look like less of a store and more like a ghost town.

As customers bought what remained in the store, the City Place shopping center officially closed its doors on Jan. 28.

According to Mayor Robert Garcia, chain officials confirmed that 300 employees from the downtown location will be offered jobs at local Walmart stores within the area. Alternatively “where that isn’t possible the company will provide 60 days of pay and, if eligible, severance, as well as resume and interview skills training.”

However, despite the confirmed number, it is yet to be determined if all displaced employees are guaranteed a spot at another store.

“Our objective is to help all associates find their next job opportunity,” said Doug McMillon, Walmart Stores, Inc. president and CEO. A Walmart associate who did not to

be identified, described the closure as concerning, with many associates still left in the dark on whether or not they will be chosen to transfer to local stores.

According to the associate, multiple Walmart managers from surrounding stores visited the downtown chain location interviewing the store associates; deciding which were to be selected. As an associate from one of the other local Long Beach Walmart locations welcoming transfers, the associate also expressed concern over the effect on the hours that will be available for current employees.

Another Walmart associate, who did not want to be identified for fear of losing employment with the company, chose the alternate route, deciding to leave the company instead. Stemming from concerns over lack of hours that some stores might possibly encounter with the new addition of employees.

Following the City Place Fresh & Easy closure earlier this year, the Downtown Long Beach Associates group are set to follow the same assistance plan as they did with Fresh & Easy’s displaced staff.

Worldwide, 269 chain locations are scheduled to close as Walmart announced in a news release on Jan.15. In total, 16,000 people will be affected by the decision, including 10,000 associates within the 154 U.S. locations set to close.

In an attempt to restructure the chain’s growth plan, Walmart closed locations with the poorest financial performance, as well as its smaller format stores, WalMart Express Located right across the vacant Fresh & Easy, the Walmart closing marks the third

business closing within the City Place shopping center, counting the Nordstrom Rack closure in 2014.

As for what will replace the now vacant store, councilwoman Lena Gonzalez released a statement regarding future plans.

“I will be working with Tony Shoshooni, owner of City Place, our mayor and local downtown community members for ideas of a possible replacement for this loss,” said Gonzalez.

In the meantime, 300 new Walmart stores are scheduled to be opened worldwide within the coming year.

If you have hit up the Long Beach night scene, chances are you’ve probably shared a moment with Michael Franco without even realizing it.

Better known by many of the city’s promoters, club managers, and night owls as DJ Hitman, his big break in 2006 would almost cost him his life.

While loading up his truck after a house party in Moreno Valley, he was approached by a group of thugs who were upset about the Orange County initialed hat that he was wearing.

“He said ‘you trying to start some shit?’ and I just said whatever man and turned my back and kept loading my stuff,” Franco said, “He told me not to turn my back to him and when I turned back around he socked me with his right hand and flipped my hat off with his left. Before I knew it, I’m getting jumped by a lot of people.”

his aid, helped him to his feet and the pair began to run away when they heard several shots fired.

“Next thing I know, my right ankle hurts and I was like, did I step in a puddle?”

Franco said, recalling the blood spilling from his lower right leg and drenching his sock.

Franco only wanted one thing: a turntable set. So, he did what many of us have done and tried to find anything and everything he could help his parents with around the house until his father, Isidro Franco, finally gave in.

“It was a Numark Battle Pak,” Franco said.

“Back then it retailed for $350 and came

He would quickly amass a small collection of vinyls and became the unofficial DJ of the Franco household. One

very important thing was still missing though.

“My dad actually came up with the name,” Franco recalled with a grin, “I would be in my room and he would come up to me and be like ‘you’re the hitman huh?’ and he started calling me that. Then at school somebody asked for my DJ name and I was like – call me Hitman.”

Little did his father know that the impromptu name he had given his 14-year-old son would become synonymous with some of the hottest nightlife in a city with half a million people.

After the shooting in 2006, Isidro forbid his son from playing house parties.

Luckily, the teenager was already on the radar of some club promoters.

Eddie Martinez, a promoter for multiple all-ages clubs at the time, had seen DJ Hitman’s flyers for house parties and noticed the outpouring of support for him on MySpace after he had been shot.

“He told me, ‘hey man I’ve been following

you, how about we get you into clubs?’”

Franco said with a sense of gratitude, “he said if I kept pushing that he would make sure to get my name out there.”

As a 17-year-old, DJ Hitman began playing alongside other DJ’s twice his age and by age 20 was being flown across the country to perform at clubs. He has never looked back.

“I have some cousins and other people who look at me like ‘you’re still a DJ?’” Franco said with a hint of bemusement at the smugness of the question, “I say, yeah I’m still a DJ, what do you like to do because I’m getting paid for what I love.”

Currently, DJ Hitman is in rotation at multiple hotspots throughout Long Beach including Agaves, Sevilla, Moonshiners and Cuban Pete’s. Franco has come a long way from playing house parties for just $30 a night. In fact, he said the name has stuck so well that no one even knows Michael Franco anymore.

“Maybe only 25 percent of the people at the places I’m at in Long Beach know Michael,” Franco jokes, “There is this whole group of people who know DJ Hitman almost as a completely different person.”

He recalled one comical instan than

He admits there are some drawbacks to a profession that is one big non-stop party. He actually decided to abandon doing what he loved full-time because he recognized he might not have been making the healthiest of lifestyle choices – we’ll leave it at that.

“I wasn’t ready to do what a lot of people end up needing to do to keep themselves going,” Franco said sternly.

In 2008, a 20-year-old Franco got a reality check while driving home after a night of mixing music and one too many drinks. He was pulled over and the Hitman was hit with a DUI. “The gig was up,” Franco remembered “Blessing in disguise is how I looked at it.”

Now Franco feels like he has settled into a nice rhythm in life, working as a UPS bulk delivery driver Sunday through Thursday. Then, every Friday and Saturday night he rips off the uniform, puts on the headphones and gets back to his roots; a 14-year old boy who loves music who has grown into one of the most renowned DJ’s in Long Beach.

For the love of books With neighborhood gem Apostrophe Books closing Saturday, the importance of independent bookstores and the treasures they hold takes a somber, yet hopeful, turn.

E

ven Bumppo knew.

From the second he strolled in with his owner, writer and bartender Mike Degracie, you could tell that this space will not be available to him for long as his paws slowly slide onto the burnt-red concrete floors of Apostrophe Books.

He didn’t even get his usual treat from assistant manager Pamela Delupio, who graciously took an iced coffee from Mike.

“Remember,” he told me. “White mocha iced coffee.”

Degracie has been coming to Apostrophe since its landing on Second Street six years ago. Like most Apostrophe regulars, he lives around the corner, and acknowledges Pamela like an old friend. Because she is.

“In this community alone, I’m here maybe four times a week, and I’d say about 30 percent of the people that come in I know by name. It really is like a family around here,” Delupio said. “And we’re small enough to be able to do that. To be able to say ‘hey, I see this book is coming out, it’s a popular author, I know exactly who would want one.’ It’s a personal thing. That’s why I think we’re most sad. Saying goodbye to friends.”

But even with the convenient location to constant foot traffic and a small, boutique-

like aesthetic, Apostrophe will be closing on Saturday.

“Unfortunately it wasn’t a surprise, it’s kind of the sign of the times,” Delupio said.

“Long Beach is a tough one. What a great community this is to be in, but you know, rent down here is not cheap.”

Yes, less people are going into independent bookstores to buy books. However, it’s not just about what’s going on the shelves, it’s where you go to get them.

Fingerprints – a record store with a bookstore in it and known for its intimate in-house concerts and wide-range selection – started on Second Street but moved to its present location on Fourth Street due to high rent. Now they are three times bigger in size.

“A lot of people don’t go into this business necessarily because they need the money,” Delupio said. “They do it for the passion of it.”

James Rappaport, founding partner of Planet Books located on Anaheim Street and Mira Mar Avenue, has been in the book business for 18 years. His shop is a world of its own, containing used books of nearly every genre while being encapsulated by vintage toys of all shapes and sizes.

The store smells like your grandmother’s house, brimming with a sense of warm

pride that can only be found in hole-in-thewall antique shops.

“Our location really sucks but when we got in the business we didn’t know any better,” Rappaport said. “This is what we could afford. We’ve never made a ton of money here, we’ve lost every single year. But people like books. Not everybody watches football on Sunday. It’s a great way to spend an evening or an afternoon or a morning.

There’ll be people who do the ‘9-to- 5’ and then they’ll go on vacation and read a book, and they’ll feel good about it.”

Even in the midst of the daily struggle, Planet Books gives books away for someone who “might need it,” gives discounts to new readers, students, housewives, firefighters, police, pretty girl, educators, etc, gives free books to veterans and donates books to retirement homes, nursing cares and elementary school around the corner.

Back at Apostrophe, Delupio and her coworkers are just enjoying the ride for the last two weeks of the store’s existence.

“It’s a real shame. It’s another tragedy for the community,” said Sean Moor, owner of East Long Beach’s groovy Gatsby Books.

“We’re intent on hanging in there and we’ll be here for a long time because we’re in a good location and we’ve integrated into the community.” www.theedgelb.com

To help salvage the ship, Moor has hosted live events since Gatsby’s beginning five years ago including new and local author visits and poetry readings.

What Moor, Rappaport, Delupio and even Mike and Bumppo teach us, is that bookstores are needed. Books are needed.

“Reading makes you a better person. It makes you a smarter person, makes you a more empathetic person,” Moor said. “It allows you to look through the experience of someone else’s life, in terms of literature, especially, and I think that that’s a very powerful thing because it broadens you as a human being.”

And so do independent bookstores.

“People need to get away from the television or the internet. I don’t think books are going away. They keep writing them, we keep stocking them,” Rapport said.

So to know that one of these hubs of knowledge, of fun and imagination is reading the last line of its last chapter, the importance of reading, buying and feeling physical, used and new books begins to show a little more light.

“It’s a huge family camaraderie, all for the love of books,” Delupio said. “It will always be home. I’ll always take the love of books with me, wherever I go, and this will be the place that I think of everytime I pick one up.”

After graduating from Cal State Long Beach in 2003, Samantha Argosino, the owner and founder of The Brass Lamp, spent her years as a young professional traveling for work.

“I would stay up late on my laptop, stuck in hotel rooms. I wanted a place in the city that was just like this,” Argosino says. “A place where I could go – possibly meet people, a quiet place to work and still have a drink . . . a place where I could just keep going.”

She put all of her creative efforts into planning and found the perfect spot downtown for her “ ‘Harvard-esque’ library with a new modern-urban spin.” She spent 10 months reconstructing the old office space on the ground floor of the Mark Schneider building into a fusion of a cafe, lounge, bar, librarybookstore, and entertainment spot. Then on Oct. 5 of last year, she opened the doors.

Outside, there is a welcome sign to greet you that says, “But first Coffee and then we Wine.” When you walk in, music is playing and brass lamps light up the different rooms separated by glass walls. The first room to the left is a conference room with a long, black table with matching chairs designed for business meetings. The next two rooms are what Argosino calls mini living rooms, furnished with beanbag chairs and coffee tables. The main space, or game area, has tables for groups or individuals, sofas and couch chairs, and plenty of outlets. The brick wall in the well-lit, most studious area of the bar has a spray painted mural of Long Beach.

stretches along the length of the room. There are chalk boards behind the counter which highlight some of the different beers on tap, new cocktails, quality coffees, and small plates.

She has designed the menu so you can work at any time of the day. Argosino says when you are working, “you don’t want an entire meal or entree. You want small plates – food to nibble on and deserts.” With the exception of Sundays, The Brass Lamp is open from 10 a.m. until 1 a.m., and on Fridays and Saturdays, until 2 a.m. Some of the menu items include, mushroom risotto, pulled pork tacos, flatbreads, lemon tarts and crème brulee. The newest additions have been breakfast food items, such as omelets, The Brass Lamp Croissa’wich, and Belgian waffles.

The Brass Lamp is about the comfort of community. Argosino found a strong fellowship among the people of Long Beach that is not easily found in other neighborhoods.

“Long Beach is a diverse, fun, creative place.” she says. “New independent businesses are popping up, young entrepreneurs – great seeds are being placed here and I want to be a part of that.”

She hopes that one day, this book bar will be a Long Beach staple – a place people can proudly say they wrote their first novel or built great relationships with other strong, like-minded individuals.

She is about localism and creating a closeknit community in which everyone can and wants to support each other. “It’s like the neighborhood living room,” she says.

has supported other local companies. Sé, the owner of the bookstore Open that used to be on Fourth Street, provided the Brass Lamp with books that fill the shelves on the back wall. These are available to read or purchase.

She also features chocolates from Romeo Chocolates, pies from The Pie Bar, wine from 5 O’Clock Wine, and cheesecake from Next Door Cheesecake. She opens her doors to groups that serve a good cause, and so far, she has hosted poetry performances, local charity events, and book signings. In the near future, she hopes to bring live jazz, acoustic musicians and local artists.

lack History Month, as many call it, carries its own unique history.

Grown from the seedling of Harvard-trained historian Carter G. Woodson and The Association for the Study of Negro Life and History’s “Negro History Week,” first celebrated in the mid 1920’s, African American History Month has been celebrated by this country since 1976.

President Gerald R. Ford famously sought it as a way to “seize the opportunity to honor the too-often neglected accomplishments of black Americans in every area of endeavor throughout our history.”

This month, we continue the tradition here in Long Beach and there are two places you might want to check out if you planning on taking the late President Ford’s advice.

“Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow – A Black History Month Event” is being hosted

by Andy Street Communication Association in collaboration with 8th District Councilman Al Austin and Bixby Knolls Business and Improvement Association from Feb. 4-7 at the Expo Arts Center. Black History Month is a time to honor and recognize the people who have made a real difference in African American community, and beyond. In Long Beach, the Andy Street Community Association (ASCA) is honor-

entertainment ing Minnie Douglas, Reggie Harrison, and Thomas Fields, as people that have made a difference in the city. ASCA is a non-profit organization that has been a catalyst for community change in North Long Beach, bringing neighbors together and reducing violent crime.

ASCA will be hosting “Yesterday, Today & Tomorrow – A Black History Month Event” with 8th District Councilman Al Austin, in collaboration with the Bixby Knolls Business Improvement Association. Here is a look at the honorees: Minnie Douglas Dr. Minnie Douglas is a governor of the Long Beach City College Foundation and Chair, professor emeritus for the nursing program at LBCC, and has been chair for numerous boards throughout the city. She has been given awards and honors for her leadership in the Long Beach community, such as the Go Long Beach award given by Mayor Robert Garcia.

Additionally, Douglas has been a chairman for the Long Beach Department of Health and Human Services, chairman of Long Beach Human Relations Commission, and is on the Leadership Long Beach Honorary

Board. Aside from her work within the nursing field, Douglas is active in many other community groups. Currently she is part of the Pearl Foundation, the California Conference for Equality and Justice, and is a life member of the Long Beach chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). Douglas said she attributes her strengths to her parents, her late husband, Edward Douglas, and her daughter.

Reggie Harrison The first director of the Department of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Communications, Reginald "Reggie" Harrison was appointed to the position in 2014. The department is responsible for disaster preparedness, Homeland Security grant coordination, and the city’s emergency communications functions. Before his current position, Harrison was the deputy city manager and acting director of the Long Beach Airport.

Harrison has been nationally recognized as making Long Beach one of the first cities in the country for an early earthquake testing system. He was in the military for 25 years, retiring as a lieutenant colonel, from the California Army National Guard. Harrison is a member of many boards and has been recognized by Leadership Long Beach for being one of its 25 “Most Impactful Alumni” in the city, in 2014.

Thomas Fields Former president of the Long Beach Harbor Commission, Thomas Fields has been an important part of the city and its port.

Fields was an advertising executive and former city planning commissioner, before being appointed in 2009 by former mayor Bob Foster as the president of the Long Beach Harbor Commission. Forty years ago, Fields began his service in Long Beach at the Economic Development Commission. He was then appointed to the Shipyard Reuse

Advisory Committee, which created the plan to gain the former Naval Shipyard property to the port.

Fields has also been part of the city’s Planning Commission and served as chair for the Redevelopment Agency board. He was also a member of the city’s Ten Year Strategic Plan committee. Fields is currently an advertising agency writer-producer, working for big names like Nissan, the California State Lottery, the California Angels, Hanes, and Burger King.

ne can find Tiffany Dawn Hasse, Long Beach poet and spoken word performer walking downtown – and she will probably be perfecting her poetic lines to herself to the unique clockwork that ticks within her.

In a nutshell, she is a hip-hop inspired, one-woman show with a social agenda to discuss mental illness and promote self-love in the form of art and poetry. Over the past few years, she has been gaining recognition for her performances, and locals voted her “2015’s Next Up and Coming Artist” for the downtown Long Beach Post. Since 2012, she has performed her spoken word poetry at places such as Avanti Cafe, the Art Walk in Long Beach, Pic N Purple, KTST-FM radio show, just to name a few that are listed on her online portfolio.

She calls herself the “Art-Tic-Ulator” because her rhyme and rhythm was born out of her decade long struggle with tic and anxiety Tiffany Dawn Hass, Long Beach poet and disorders. myself with words.”

At the age of 18, after oral surgery, her psychiatrist diagnosed her with dormant Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) and Tourette’s Syndrome, which can retrigger when one experiences physical pain. “I was no longer able to leave the house, go to work, attend classes, or play sports,” she says. Instead, she spent all her moments trying to ease the pain that came with her compulsions and tics – counting how many times she closed the door, tapping the table, repeating words and sounds, checking the stove, rechecking the stove, and rechecking the stove again.

Instead of allowing her psychological diagnoses to debilitate her, she used art to heal and empower her. In order to regain control over her obsessive and compulsive thoughts, she would spend hours a day writing in a notebook just so she could leave the house. She used her ritualistic behavior to memorize lines from her original poems like, “51/50,” or “Underdog: The Unconventional Learner.” She practiced each pronunciation of her ts and the lengths of her o sounds until every word and line felt rhythmically right.

After eight years of writing privately, she began to share her work and gain positive feedback, even though her subject matter “was dark – it wasn’t pretty stuff.” Her poetry often explores subjects such as disorder and insanity, unconventional learning, and different ways different minds process the world.

Hasse, an auditory and kinesthetic learner, performs all of her pieces. She dances and sings, and even illustrates her tics as she recites her poetry. She says, “Yes, poetry is the foundation of what I am doing. But I have taken it to a performance level for the connective purpose. I want them to see a part of me in a physical form.

It’s poetry in motion.”

While performing, she creates an intimate atmosphere with her personal vulnerability in order to create a safe space for people to hear her message. Her purpose is to make people contemplate: “Maybe someone perceives things through colors or math! Or I don’t know! People process things differently and that shouldn’t be unaccounted for. You have to look at the dynamic of an individual on so many different levels. If only, as humans, we could try to meet people where they are.”
