Detectives From MAIT Arcadia Assist Monrovia P.D. With Traffic Collision Investigation BY TERRY MILLER A major traffic collision which occurred at the intersection of Foothill Boulevard and Myrtle Avenue last Wednesday, Jan.13, is still under investigation this week by detectives from Monrovia and Arcadia. Due to the extensive scene and the serious nature of several of the injuries, a specialized traffic investigations unit, the Major Accident Investigation Team

(MAIT) from Arcadia P.D., was called to assist. As a result of the traffic collision, nine people were injured and required medical attention, including the adult driver of the vehicle believed to have caused the collision. Several others were taken to local area hospitals. The cause of the accident is under investigation and the questioning of the driver believed to have caused the collision is pending, as the driver is being treated for critical

injuries. In addition, toxicology reports have been delayed due to overloaded Los Angeles County demands post-holiday. Witnesses stated that the driver of a late model Mercedes-Benz station wagon was driving west on Foothill Boulevard at a very high speed, failing to come to a stop behind the already stopped vehicles at the intersection for a red light. Other witnesses said the vehicle was

driving erratically long before she got to the intersection where she struck the first car which became airborne, rolled over and landed on a large truck then ultimately fell off that vehicle where it came to rest outside Chase Bank. The driver then drove around the stopped vehicles and through the intersection SEE PAGE 22

sion projects across the country, slated to collectively cost at least $24 billion. Making the list of national highway boondoggles is the proposed 710 Tunnel Project, which officials

estimate would cost $5.6 billion. “America’s long-term travel needs are changing, especially among Millennials, who are driving fewer miles,

getting driver licenses in fewer numbers, and expressing greater preferences to live in areas where they do not need to use a car often,” said Tony Dutzik, Senior Policy Analyst

at Frontier Group. “Despite the fact that Millennials are the nation’s largest generation, and the unquestioned consumers of tomorrow’s transportation system, California is failing to adequately respond to these changing trends.” he added. The study recommends that states: 1. Adopt fix-it-first policies that reorient transportation funding away from highway expansion and toward repair of existing roads and bridges; 2. Invest in transportation solutions that reduce the need for costly and disruptive highway expansion projects by improving and expanding public transit, biking, and walking options; 3. Give priority to funding transportation projects that reduce the number of vehiclemiles people travel each year, thereby also reducing air pollution, carbon emissions, and future road repair and maintenance needs; 4. Include future maintenance costs, a range of potential future housing and transportation trends, and the availability of new transportation options such as car-sharing, bike-sharing, ride-sharing, and transit in transportation project selection decisions; 5. Invest in research and data collection to better track, and more aptly react, to ongoing shifts in how people travel. Elected officials and community leaders joined CALPIRG in expressing their concerns about the SR 710 tunnel project. U.S. Congressman Adam Schiff: "I do not believe that the 710 freeway tunnel alternatives proposed by Caltrans and Metro make sense for our region or taxpayers. For the same cost as the $5.6 billion tunnel, we could likely complete all of the alternatives -- light rail, bus, surface street

improvements, bike and pedestrian walkways, cargo movement, and other traffic flow solutions -- combined, and use the remainder of the money to repair some of our aging infrastructure. These alternatives are not only more cost effective, but far less disruptive of the affected neighborhoods.” Bill Bogaard, Former Mayor of the City of Pasadena from 1999-2015: “The 710 tunnel freeway proposal, after more than 50 years, exists as a solution in search of a problem, in light of today’s priorities and the limits of resources. Its original purpose—to increase north-south drivethrough capacity for trucks— has been outmoded by evolving truck mobility patterns and the emerging alternative transportation needs throughout the west San Gabriel Valley. The DEIR/EIS, although grossly inadequate, does demonstrate that the tunnel increases air pollution and local traffic. Meanwhile, for investment much less than the cost of the tunnel, a comprehensive range of traffic and mobility improvements can be achieved, such as light rail, bus, surface street improvements, bike and pedestrian walkways, cargo movement, and other traffic flow solutions. With currently existing support for such solutions, they could proceed now, creating thousands of jobs, instead of continuing the 710 tunnel stalemate for decades into the future. The 710 project does not offer comprehensive relief, it costs too much, it creates new environmental problems, and it is not going anywhere. The proposal should be dropped!” The report can be read at this link here. http://calpirgedfund. org/reports/caf/highwayboondoggles-2

By Terry Miller This past Monday, Jan. 18, the nation honored the life and times of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. with parades, special ceremonies, and recreation of some of his most beloved and poignant speeches. At one event, held in West Covina, Jayden Austin (11-years-old) placed 100 Monrovia Weekly newspapers on guests’ chairs prior to the speeches. The event coordinators requested copies of the paper which featured a page one story on Dr. King’s life. However, the events honoring the birthday of one of the most important figures in American history were overshadowed by Hollywood’s snub of AfricanAmericans’ contribution to the film industry. The NAACP issued the following statement in conjunction with the announcement of the 88th Academy Awards which gave no mention to any black actors or those behind the camera. As a result many actors and directors like Spike Lee are

planning on boycotting the Awards. “The presentation of the annual Academy Awards has long served as the culminating event of the awards season. With the announcement of the nominees for the 88th Academy Awards, the contributions of people of color to the movie industry - both in front of and behind the cameras - once again have been severely overlooked. Of the 20 acting nominations, including Best Actor and Actress, and Best Supporting Actor and Actress, the Academy failed for the second year in a row to nominate a single actor of color. “The artistic judgment of the Academy can’t be dictated. The diversity of the Academy, however, can and should be demanded. The Academy is revered for its role in judging the highest expression of human ideals in film. The Academy’s judgment, however, would be better respected were it based on a diversity of membership reflecting the diversity of moviegoers. Diversity in Hollywood in 2016 seems like dialogue from a black and white silent movie

Tsai Ing-wen Elected New ROC Taiwan President

Tsai Ing-wen and Chen Chien-jen were declared the 14th-term president and vice president of the Republic of China (Taiwan) by the Central Election Commission on Jan. 16. The Democratic Progressive Party Tsai-Chen ticket received 6.9 million votes (56.12 percent), defeating the Kuomintang candidates, Eric Liluan Chu and Wang Ju-hsuan, with 3.8 million (31.04 percent), and the People First Party’s James Soong and Hsu Hsinying, with 1.6 million (12.83

percent). Voter turnout was 66.2 percent. In the Legislative Yuan elections, the Democratic Progressive Party won 68 seats of the 113 total seats, while the Kuomintang took 35. The New Power Party captured five seats, the People First Party three, and the Non-Partisan Solidarity Union one. One independent candidate was also elected. in 1916, words are spoken but no one seems to be able to hear and heed the need for diversity and credibility in the Academy. “We commend the recent efforts of the Academy to increase diversity among its members, the record however is inadequate. Lack of recognition by the Academy of exemplary performances and work by people of color working in the industry led to the creation of the NAACP Image Awards almost 47 years ago. With the 2016 nomination results, our mission and efforts are as relevant today as they have been in the past. “According to the 2013 Motion Picture Association of America’s Theatrical Market Statistics Report, people of color represented 51 percent of the frequent movie going audience, and 32 percent of that audience was Latino, while African Americans represented 12 percent. These numbers alone reflect the unbalanced relationship people of color have with Hollywood. It shows how we steadfastly support the movies, while the Academy Awards seldom recognizes the numerous contri-

butions made by people of color towards making movies, appearing in movies and even viewing them. “It is time for the Academy Awards to be as relevant to the new crop of actors and movie-going audiences as they are to the new movie viewing platforms. A first step is to revisit the Academy membership and how it can play catch up to reflect a 21st century world. Another is to question advertisers who support the Awards show. In 2014, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ revenue of $97.3 million dollars was due in large part to the domestic rights of its broadcast partner, ABC television, which has broadcast rights through 2020. “The 2014 Oscars broadcast boasted the highest telecast in 10 years with 43 million viewers. This was the same year that had the most diverse slate of movies by filmmakers of color as well as actors, which assuredly attributed to its ratings increase. Diversity is not just good business, it’s the only business and the 2014 ratings numbers show that. It’s

time the Academy recognizes the value and the voice of people of color and until they do, we should switch the channel until that old guard can reflect and respect what people of color bring to the table.”

A new California Appellate case just published August 8, 2013, “Glaski v. Bank of America”, holds that a homeowner can challenge his lender’s right to foreclose by showing that the Deed of Trust never made it into the securitized trust until after the trust’s closing date. This issue is now squarely before the California Supreme Court in Yvanova v. New Century Mortgage Corp. This is the case in most loans made in the last 12 years. If the bank foreclosed we should be able to get the homeowner money damages and/or the house back. Or a lawsuit could be filed and a court ruling obtained preventing the court from foreclosing. Recently enacted Sections 2924(a)(6) and 2924.19 of California Civil Code provide the same relief to homeowners. It is highly suggested that homeowners take this window of opportunity to get relief before the banks get Congress to close this door with national legislation. Contact us so we can help you.

CRIME

BeaconMediaNews.com

By J. Shadé Quintanilla After a nationwide trend of falling crime rates, violent crimes are on the rise in Pasadena and in the United States. In preliminary crime data released Tuesday, the Federal Bureau of Investigation reported that crimes have gone up in the first six months of 2015 compared with data from the first six months of 2014. More specifically in Pasadena, crimes have increased by roughly 17 percent. Across the country, the FBI reports that there has been a 1.7 percent increase

FBI Statistics Point to Rise of Violent Crimes in Pasadena and Nation

in violent crimes, with upticks in murder, rape, aggravated assault and robberies. Burglaries and arson went down nationally during the first half of the year. One of the most alarming statistics from the report is the rise of murder. Between January 2015 to June 2015, murder rose 6.2 percent. After warnings from police chiefs about the spike in homicides throughout the country, this statistic may come as no surprise for many officers. Murder was up in Pasadena as well, with one murder being reported during 2014 and three reported

homicides in 2015. All violent crimes, overall, were up in Pasadena. In 2015, the city reported 204 violent crimes, while in the previous year, officers reported 174. Arson crimes nearly doubled and the city saw crimes increase in car theft by roughly 40 percent; in robbery by 24.5 percent; in burglary by 12.3 percent; in property crimes by 10 percent; in petty theft by 7 percent; and in petty theft by 1.9 percent. Violent crime was also up by about 14 percent in West Covina; by 12 percent in El Monte; by 10 percent in Glendale; and by 2 per-

13-Year-Old Boy Robbed of Hoverboard

Police said a 13-yearold boy, fearing for his life, handed over his hoverboard to an armed robber near La Pintoresca Library Friday night, Jan. 15. The boy was carrying his green hoverboard as he stood on the northeast cor-

ner of North Raymond Avenue and Washington Boulevard about 8 p.m., according to police reports. The suspect, a 20-to25-year-old, clean-shaven Latino man wearing a black baseball cap approached the boy, pulled back his

sweatshirt to reveal a handgun in his jeans’ waistband, and demanded the hoverboard. The robber fled in an unknown direction, Mercado said, while the boy ran home and called police.

cent in Burbank. Los Angeles saw a 23 percent uptick in crime. FBI officials and the Justice Department have warned the public to not make sweeping conclusions about this recently released data. The data, which is a part of the bureau’s Uniform Crime Reporting program, only counts for six months of the year and does not

give a complete picture of overall crime rates in 2015. Additionally, the data is collected from voluntary reports from police agencies. Justice Department spokesman Patrick Rodenbush said in statement. “While the overall violent crime rates remain historically low, and it is too early to draw any long-term conclusions, the Justice Depart-

ment is acutely focused on the increases being experienced in some communities of the country.” As the FBI continues to collect more data from 2015, the DOJ has vowed to increase their efforts in identifying crime and fighting it. In February, DOJ leaders will train federal prosecutors and police officials in anti-violence strategies.

The British Are Coming: Response to ‘Sierra Madre Watchman’ (1/14/16 Issue) Dear Editor: You seem to have a grudge against and misunderstanding of the Preserve Sierra Madre group. We are not just people wanting our way. Sierra Madre is just three square miles of an environment that people cherish and move here to enjoy. It is not property. It is a quality of life and a chance to have peace and the beauty and accompaniment of nature. If you do not have policies to protect it, it is changed and gone forever. People and property owners can move; Sierra Madre cannot. Maybe you could make some effort to come out of your perspective and care about something other than it. - Paul Revere Sierra Madre

Wow, thank God for those awesome Monrovian Fire Department. The fireman carrying the baby was so enduring. Serve and protect, as a resident of Monrovia for the last 20 plus years, I think we have a great police force. Sorry about my kids dialing 911 when they were little, some 16 years ago. Why Sanders Is Like FDR Editor: When FDR proposed Social Security some people said it would be socialism and that’s bad. When Lyndon Johnson proposed Medicare people said the same thing. How would we like it without either program now? What would life be like for us without these programs? Think about it. Bernie Sanders wants and single payor system like the other industrialized countries have – Germany, England, and Canada. Nobody is complaining about health care in those countries, especially Germany. We should all have healthcare under Medicare. Bernie is on our side. When FDR’s funeral procession went by in 1945, a reporter asked a man why he was sobbing and asked him if he knew the President. The man replied, “No, but he know me.” -Monrovia Reader

‘Deathtrap’ Brings Mystery-Comedy to Sierra Madre Playhouse By Fran Syverson

W

ow! Talk about a killer play! “Deathtrap” comes alive (and brings death) in this compelling comedic mystery now at the Sierra Madre Playhouse. To describe the plot’s many twists, turns, and surprises would take away all the fun of watching it unfold. The story is literally a story-withina-story-within-a-story. And it all begins with a story that Sidney Bruhl cannot find the words to write. A playwright, he is suffering severely from writer’s block, following his latest three flops. Then, fortuitously, a young writer asks him to read his first attempt. A nearly perfect attempt, Sidney decides when he reads Clifford Anderson’s script. Oh, he would kill to be able to write such a good mystery himself! Kill? Would he? An offhand jesting remark begins to germinate in Sidney’s mind. With his wife Myra’s encouragement, he invites Clifford to come to their remote Connecticut home to discuss collaborating on fine-tuning the neophyte’s script. And that is as much of the plot that I can divulge! What I can say is that the five actors do justice to this classic mystery. One might almost feel transported to its 1978 premier that launched the longest running comedy-thriller on Broadway, with 1,793 performances. “Deathtrap” is not for faint of heart, as every astonishing twist brings new tensions. Yet the scares are leavened with lots of humor, as evidenced by the audience’s gales of laughter. Christopher Cappiello

(Left to Right) Christopher Cappiello, Shaw Purnell, and David Tolemy. - Photo by Gina Long

plays Sidney as the frustrated, desperate man he is, searching for a way out of his creative abyss. Conniving, placating, enraged - Cappiello embodies all this and more. But look out for Shaw Purnell! As she ranges from being the clingy, supportive wife Myra to her vehement screaming in terror, she grips our hearts. David Tolemy brings youthful energy to his role as Clifford, along with conveying his bent toward deceit, violence, and seductiveness. Then there is Helga Ten Dorp, a next-door visitor and self-described psychic. Tall, bald, with ghoulish, eerie eye makeup, she is the catalyst for much of the rising tension in this nail-biter of a tale. “Beware the boots!” she says, and she is right. Karesa McElheny has even us believing in her

mystical powers, so convincing is she. Don Savage has a cameo role as Porter Milgrim, Sidney’s attorney who convincingly brings ominous financial news. An excellent cast and their performances are only part of the picture. “Deathtrap” owes much of its success also to the fine crew behind the scenes. As the play opens, the stage is set for the mayhem that ensues. Sidney’s walls showcase weaponry such as that he had researched for his earlier plays - a mace, revolvers, a crossbow. Less proudly, he also displays framed playbill covers of his ill-fated plays. A massive, gray stone fireplace dominates the living room, warm fire aglow. John Vertrees brought the set to life, so to speak, with Erin Walley

assisting. The lighting, music, and sound effects are so wellintegrated into the plot that they are virtually part of the cast. Pablo Santiago is lighting designer, Sean Paxton the composer, and Barry Schwam the sound effects designer who makes you wish you had brought your umbrella to shield you from the storm! Christian Lebano directed “Deathtrap,” and produced it along with Estelle Campbell and Alexandra Wright and assistant producer Jackson Kendall. Kristin Bolinski is stage manager, assisted by Emily Hopfauf. Vicki Conrad designed the costumes, and must have had special fun with psychic Helga’s distinctive garb. Ken Merckx’s talents as choreographer serve well in the fight episodes. Dialect coach is Deborah Ross Sullivan. Diane Siegel curated the foyer exhibits relevant to “Deathtrap,” including some fun opportunities for selfies in frames. “Deathtrap” is based on a book by Ira Levin. You may have seen its 1982 movie adaptation starring Michael Caine, Christopher Reeve, and Dyan Cannon. Performances run weekends through Feb. 20. Curtain time is 8 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays, with Sunday matinees at 2:30 p.m. For reservations or more information call (626) 355-4318 or visit the website, www.sierramadreplayhouse.org, for online ticketing. Reservations for groups of 10 or more can be made at the same phone number. Admission is $30 general, $27 for seniors (65+), $17 for children 12 and under. The Playhouse is located at 87 W. ‘Fly’: A Play More About a Journey Than a Race By Nathaniel Cayanan This February is Black History Month and to usher it in, Pasadena Playhouse will feature “Fly,” a play directed by Ricardo Khan and written jointly by him and writer Trey Ellis. The play tells the story of the first African American pilots to join the U.S. military who would be known to history as the Tuskegee Airmen. Such a story took years of exhaustive research, as Khan explained during an interview with the Pasadena Independent. In fact, both he and Ellis have had previous projects focusing on the airmen, Ellis even having worked on the film, “The Tuskegee Airmen,” which was produced in 1995 and starred Laurence Fishburne, Cuba Gooding, Jr., and John Lithgow. For “Fly,” Khan and Ellis had the assistance of an actual airman: Dr. Roscoe Brown, who, along with other Tuskegee Airmen, received the Congressional Gold Medal and went on to have an illustrious career in academia. Khan explained that when he first started researching and consulting with Brown and other Tuskegee Airmen, “There weren’t these movies about them. There wasn’t a lot of awareness. They were all very eager to tell their story, not because they wanted fame or respect, but because they wanted the world to know that the pursuit of excellence can conquer adversity.” But given the specific political climate we are in today, when it comes to race, and with Black History Month soon upon us, some may expect a play about African Americans during this era of segregation to find parallels to today and to immediately become political or

even preachy. But, according to Khan, “‘Fly’ is not a history lesson. It’s a lesson about humanity. There are connections that we have in our present to the past, but they aren’t to be studied. They’re to be felt.” Still, it is hard for an audience to escape the influences of today’s tense political landscape. An example of this is the scene that portrays the moment when the Tuskegee Airmen participated in the inauguration of President Obama. Khan stated that that moment in history made everyone, Democrat or Republican, feel “proud to be an American. But, it didn’t end racism.” Such a scene perhaps had a certain inspirational response when “Fly” first opened in 2009, but since Obama’s inauguration there have been instances of racial bias in enforcement, moves to disenfranchise African American voters, and dwindling diversity in entertainment. Khan explained that the production team “saw this in the evolution of ‘Fly’ through the years and saw the reaction from the audience becoming a little different. But it made us stronger. There were times when people wondered whether it was good that we

made a connection to President Obama, but the connection is not President Obama. It’s to that particular day when we as a country made history, world history, and for me the play is about the Tuskegee Airmen being able to sit at the capitol steps and know they had something to do with it.” This is perhaps the most important point of “Fly,” that it is not a political statement, but rather more a personal journey and, as Khan finished with in his interview, “an experience that can be had by people of all backgrounds. It has the ability, like very few plays, to bring people together. And this is a time when, with so much trying to divide us, we need those opportunities to bring us together, and that’s what ‘Fly’ does.” Preview performances for “Fly” begin at The Pasadena Playhouse (39 S. El Molino Ave.) on Jan. 26, with the official press opening on Jan. 31. “Fly” will play through Feb. 21. Tickets, priced from $25 to $87, are available online at www.PasadenaPlayhouse. org, by calling The Pasadena Playhouse at (626) 356-7529, or visiting The Pasadena Playhouse Box Office.

There are tons of art galleries sprinkled across the Coachella Valley, the majority of which are located in Palm Springs and Palm Desert. Along El Paseo Drive in Palm Desert you can barely walk 25 feet without tripping over another one; there are highend galleries such as Imago, Melissa Morgan, or Heather James, as well as a number of more affordable options located along the strip. If you need a break from the gallery hopping there are plenty of restaurants, shopping, and plastic surgeons to keep you occupied. If I had to pick one stand out exhibit I would see Phillip K. Smith III’s work at Royale Projects: Contemporary Art (http://royaleprojects.com/phillip-k-smith 73-190), El Paseo, suite 3, Palm Desert. Open Wednesday through Sunday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.; runs through end of January 2016. A number of his works are featured including the minimalistic “Faceted Disc” series “Light + Shadow” as well as the eye-popping “Torus” sculptures. The discs are white painted fiberglass with varied creases in their surfaces that are designed to capture the light and shadow from differing angles; simple, but striking. The “Light + Shadow” works are static and reminiscent of Ellsworth Kelly or Tony DeLap, whereas the “Torus” series really comes alive and reminds me more of the “California Light” and “Space/ Finish Fetish” works of Robert Irwin, Doug Wheeler, or James Turrell. The 3-foot by 4-foot convex/concave donut-in-donut shaped wall sculptures are constructed by hand out of layers of acrylic, combined with LED lights and custom electronic components. The sculptures differing ring layers slowly transition from one color to the next – changing the mood/ambience of the room over time. For additional works by the artist, including the “Reflection Field” installation, visit his website: http://pks3.com. If you cannot get out to the desert, check out Royale’s new location in downtown L.A.: 432 Alameda St. Open Thursday through Sunday from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. There are also a number of unique galleries in Palm Springs – mostly concentrated along Palm Canyon Drive, Indian Canyon Drive, or within a few blocks. Drive (www.smithvargas. com/bob.html, (760) 7747333) caught my attention because it combines popular Palm Springs themes of mid-century Modernism, deserts, mountains, and water. The “paintings” are actually constructed by quilting together hundreds of small squares of colored textiles into a mosaic depicting homes with pools or structures surrounded by abstract representations of earth, water and sky; it reminds me, somewhat, of David Hockney’s photo montage pieces. Hoffman’s background as an architect is evident in the construction, arrangement, deconstruction, and rearrangement of the fabrics to form the works. If you are think-

ing, “I have an old Singer sewing machine at home – why not give it a try” – good luck – it takes a lot of skill to get the color and composition right. Currently showing at Smith Vargas and will be on exhibit at the Palm Springs Museum Artists Council/Saguaro Hotel Exhibition opening Feb. 3 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., (www. psmuseum.org/councilevents/129-saguaro-hotelartists-council-februaryexhibition-opening). Business Profile: Tech Rockstars

BUSINESS

By J. Shadé Quintanilla Are you having trouble with your computer at work? Do you need help setting up a new printer for the office? Call your local tech celebrities--Tech Rockstars. A full service, mobile, IT company, Tech Rockstars is made up talented technical professionals who do a stellar job in attending to all of your technology needs. The IT firm was started over eleven years ago by tech pro Steve Price. Born with a knack for fixing electronics, Price started his first tech job when he was just 10 years maintaining the computer lab at the school where his mother worked. As he got older, his passion for computers grew and he later opened up his first IT venture--Price Enterprises--while also working as a pizza delivery boy. Price struggled to keep his business open and unfortunately had to close its doors after a few years. While figuring out his next move, he joined a band full of techies.

The Tech Rockstars’ team.

One day while the band was rocking out, they realized that they should start an IT company together and pursue tech stardom. Ever since then, the band kept its name, Tech Rockstars, and grew into the successful company that it is today. Tech Rockstars provides a variety of IT services either at their store in Monrovia or right at your office. Whether you are an individual user who may just need a diagnosis of your computer or a small- to mediumsized business, Tech Rockstars is equipped to help all types of clients. Their af-

fordable in-house services include data recovery, virus cleanouts, hardware and software repair and more. For businesses that need assistance at the office, the IT firm makes the trip to assist with the company’s tech needs. On-site services include tech support, printer installation, system delivery, basic networking. The IT firm also offers hosting services and a managed IT service that provides preventative maintenance and monitoring of networks and computer devices. Tech Rockstars follows a similar business model as

another company started by a techie named Steve-Apple. In a quote that you can find on Tech Rockstars’ website, Steve Jobs says, “My model for business it The Beatles...They balanced each other and the total was greater than the sum of the parts.” Like Jobs, Price also models Tech Rockstars after The Beatles. Not only did it start as an idea in a band, but the company is made of group of tech professionals who are all knowledgeable and equipped to take over work. “If you want to accomplish anything great, it really requires work from all types of people,” Price said. “We don’t just have an IT guy that does everything. Those guys are good but unfortunately you never know what could happen to them,” he continued. “There’s a lot of control that one guy has so if anything happens to one of us, we could pretty much take over.” Tech Rockstars is located at 850 S. Myrtle Ave, Monrovia. For more information, visit www.techrockstars.com or call them at (626) 533-1436.

Altadena’s Wal-Mart Among 269 Stores Falling Victim to Amazon By Terry Miller The ever-growing online business world has deeply affected retail businesses, particularly in the past year. As a direct result of stiff competition by online giants like Amazon, Wal-Mart said last Friday that it will close 269 of its stores globally, including 154 in the U.S., nine of them in California, as the company looks to “reposition itself in a difficult retail climate,” according to the Los Angeles Times. Two stores in Los Angeles - one on Crenshaw Boulevard and one on West Cesar E. Chavez Avenue - as well as one in Oakland, closed last Sunday. A Wal-Mart store in

Long Beach and Wal-Mart Neighborhood Markets in Altadena, Bell Gardens, Hawaiian Gardens, San Bernardino, and San Jose will call it quits at the end of the month. The closures include Wal-Mart and Sam's Club locations, and will affect 16,000 employees globally. About 1,040 California employees will be affected. Wal-Mart is just the latest chain to announce store closures after the retail industry struggled through the holiday season. Last week, Macy's said it will be closing 40 of its department stores, cutting 4,800 jobs, and Sears Holding Corp. said it will be closing a number of Kmart stores across the country, including three in California.

State Board of Education Votes to Seek Relief From Provisions of Outdated Federal No Child Left Behind Act The State Board of Education (SBE) took the first step toward relieving school districts in California from complying with two key provisions of the outdated No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB). The board authorized two waiver requests for provisions involving Title I schools, which have high

numbers and high percentages of students from lowincome families. The waivers would give California districts more flexibility to use federal funding for programs and services they believe would best improve academic achievement. State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Torlakson strongly supports the

action. “California districts should be given the flexibility contained in the new Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) without having to comply with burdensome provisions of NCBL,” he said. The first waiver, if granted by the federal government, would provide Title I districts with more flexibility to use funds that are

now used for supplemental educational services on highquality programs designed by districts to best suit the needs of academically struggling students. The current system, developed under NCLB regulations, relies largely on private providers to assist students at sites away from schools. Education leaders are

hopeful that the waiver will be granted this year in light of the passage of ESSA, which President Obama signed in December 2015. The SBE also voted to approve a waiver request for the Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) provisions of NCLB so that the state does not need to identify new schools for program improvement.

Meanwhile, Torlakson and SBE President Michael Kirst are urging the U.S. Department of Education to write regulations implementing ESSA in a way that allows California the flexibility to continue developing its own coherent accountability system that will best suit the needs of California students, parents, and communities.

A convenient transportation system plays an important part in how people live and where people work in a city. In a little more than a month, the Arcadia Transit will be transformed from the traditional dial-a-ride service to a fixed route system. The change comes after a unanimous vote by the city council, a 30-day survey process, and numerous community meetings. Since 1975, the Arcadia Transit has served thousands of riders. The system not only provides a safe and an inexpensive method of traveling around the city, but it also has become an important aspect of life for many people living in Arcadia. The system is funded by numerous local, state, and federal programs. Last Nov. 3, Arcadia’s City Manager Dominic Lazzaretto proposed the Arcadia Transit Service Needs Assessment and Restructuring Plan. The plan includes an evaluation of the current Arcadia Transit system, a public outreach system, analysis of the transit needs, and recommendations for improve-

ments. The goal is to meet the community needs and to anticipate the opening of the Gold Line train service while maintaining a diala-ride program for seniors and those with disabilities, creating a fixed-route system, and modifying the fare policy. The 30-day survey period was between Feb. 26 and March 27, 2015. The results of the survey show that customers were very satisfied with the service, but many riders expressed their difficulties to reserv-

ing trips and to having their rides arrive on time. Following the survey, there were two community meetings also took place, one at the Arcadia Public Library and one at the City Council Chambers. Community members who attended the meetings also agreed that there are difficulties with the reservation system. The plan is to create a fixed-route system similar to Laguna Beach Municipal Transit and Irvine iShuttle. There is also hope to increase the transit service to

many patrons who do not know how to reserve a ride. For students, Arcadia Unified School District does provide transportation through their fee-based busing program. Parents and students can find more information regarding the fee-based busing program on the Arcadia Unified School District’s website (http://site.ausd.net/). With the Gold Line

Foothill Extension opening on March 5, the city hopes to have the Arcadia Transit implementation begin on Feb. 28. The date will allow the Arcadia Transit to test and prepare for the increase of riders from the Gold Line Foothill Extension. For additional information about the new fixed routes and schedules check the Arcadia City website (http://www. ci.arcadia.ca.us).

health Nurses’ Union Applauds Sanders Plan for Healthcare for All

16 | january 21, 2016- january 27, 2016

National Nurses United (NNU) welcomed Senator Bernie Sanders’ new plan for achieving the dream of countless Americans for nearly a century – healthcare coverage for everyone. Sanders’ plan also aligns with the official position of the American Federation of Labor and Congress of Industrial Organizations (AFL-CIO), which has endorsed single payer health care, Medicare for all – most recently again last July when the AFL-CIO specifically endorsed single payer as part of its national Raising Wages campaign, noted NNU Executive Director RoseAnn DeMoro, a national vice president of the AFLCIO. “Finally, a real plan from a leading presidential candidate that will guarantee healthcare for every American, just as every other major nation has done,” DeMoro said. “This is a plan that will end the long nightmare facing the nation’s uninsured, and those having to choose between getting the care they need or putting food on the table for their families. And it protects our most precious gift, our health,”

DeMoro said. “By eradicating the crisis of the 29 million who are still uninsured, and the tens of millions more facing medical debt, even with the gains made under the Affordable Care Act (ACA), this plan would cut health care costs, put money back in consumers’ pockets, create jobs, and address a major cause of income inequality, un-payable medical bills.” “Instead of being held hostage to a corporate system based on profits and price gouging, with Sanders’ Medicare for all plan we can finally have a system based on patient need, with a single standard of quality care for all, regardless of ability to pay, race, gender, age, or where you live. That’s a beautiful thing,” DeMoro said. As Sanders notes, DeMoro continued, “his plan includes a pledge to provide comprehensive coverage, inpatient and outpatient, emergency care, dental care, vision, long term care, prescription drugs, medical supplies, and other basic needs. One medical card, no networks that limit patient choice of doctor or other provider, no fighting with

insurance companies over needed care they refuse to pay for.” “And, contrary to those in the Clinton camp who have claimed that Sanders wants to turn our healthcare over to state governors, many of whom have refused to expand Medicaid under the ACA, the Sanders plan would be federally administrated, with national standards and national reimbursements.” Ultimately, any single payer plan is a financing mechanism. All final details would remain to be ironed out in the legislative process, as occurred with the ACA as well. “Bernie Sanders has certainly emphasized the power of the healthcare industry lobby in Congress, and that it will take the power of a grassroots political movement that he talks about to enact this plan. Nurses will be in the forefront of that effort,” DeMoro noted. In his announcement, Sanders said that “the typical family earning $50,000 a year would save nearly $6,000 annually in health care costs.” That, DeMoro contin-

ued, means, as NNU has long noted, improved Medicare for all will raise real wages for American workers and income will go up for nearly everyone. And, as NNU and other health economists have pointed out, that will give consumers more resources to spend, creating a huge multiplier effect for the economy. An NNU study in 2009, on the eve of debate over the ACA, predicted that single payer would create some 2.6 million new jobs alone, plus substantial in-

creases in federal and state revenues. A recent New York Times/Kaiser Family Foundation survey found that 20 percent of people under 65 who have health insurance continue to face significant problems with medical bills, despite the ACA. The Times’ report found that 63 percent of those burdened by medical bills said they had “used up all or most of their savings,” 42 percent had to take on another job or work more hours, 11 percent had to

move or take in roommates, and 11 percent had to turn to charity due to those bills. “Those days will come to an end when we pass the Sanders proposal. “Now we have the framework for a plan that will save lives, achieve the dreams of Americans for nearly a century for guaranteed health care, help the fight to create jobs, and reduce income inequality. Sanders deserves our thanks and nurses will fight to make the dream come true,” DeMoro concluded.

Get Training for the 2016 Mount Wilson Trail Race Mount Wilson Trail Race training runs begin Jan. 30th, 2016. The Mt. Wilson Trail Race Committee is again offering a comprehensive 17week program to get runners ready for the challenging Mt. Wilson Trail Race, scheduled for Saturday, May 28 in Sierra Madre. This program is free and the public is invited to participate. Simon Cooper’s Invictus Running Academy, with assistance from the Foothill Flyers, will lead advanced and beginners groups on a series of weekly runs up the Mt. Wilson Trail or along City of Sierra Madre streets. The instructors will also offer an easy-tofollow training program for runners to follow throughout the week. Two local popular races, the Santa Anita Derby Day 5K (April 9) and Fountain to Falls (May 7) will be part of the training program. The program gets kicked off with the Bandit Trail Run (5K, 15K 30K and 50K) in Simi Valley on Saturday, Janu-

Take it one step further and grow a few of your favorite herbs on a warm sunny windowsill. Select a container with drainage holes and set on the appropriate size saucer to protect your woodwork. Fill the container with well-drained potting mix and plant seeds or transplants. Purchase basil, chives, parsley, oregano, and rosemary plants from your local garden center or the produce department. Greens, like lettuce and spinach, will also grow in a sunny window or better yet under artificial lights. Grow them in a container filled with a well-drained potting mix similar to your windowsill herb garden. Plant seeds according to the seed packet. Continually harvest the outer leaves when they are four to six inches tall. And once your tomatoes, peppers, and eggplants start flowering, you will need to shake things up a bit. I Know More

S

ince I am busy practicing on my new smartphone this week, let us just share some chuckles from email forwards. As I grow older I realize:

1. I talk to myself, because sometimes I need expert advice. 2. Sometimes I roll my eyes out loud. 3. I do not need anger management. I need people to stop pissing me off. 4. My people skills are just fine. It is my tolerance of idiots that needs work. 5. The biggest lie I tell myself is "I don't need to write this down, I'll remember it." 6. When I was a child I thought nap time was punishment. Now it is like a mini-vacation. 7. The day the world runs out of wine is just too terrible to think about. 8. Even duct tape cannot fix stupid, but it can muffle the sound. 9. Wouldn't it be great if we could put ourselves in the dryer for ten minutes; come out wrinkle-free and three sizes smaller? 10. "Getting lucky" means walking into a room and remembering why I am there. We must realize brains of older people are slow because they know so much. People do not decline mentally with age; it just takes them longer to recall facts because they have more information in their brains. Scientists believe this also makes you hard of hearing as it puts pressure on your inner ear. I do not know about you, but I feel better. My brain is not getting weak. I simply know more.

On April 3, 2005 her pastor had appointed her to the "Council of Mothers" at the Second Baptist Church in Monrovia with the distinguished title of "Mother Geneva Spicer," a title she more than earned. She was born Geneva Monroe on April 26, 1931 in Sherard, Coahoma County, Mississippi. She was the youngest of four children, two boys and two girls born to James Monroe and his wife Rosie L. Ware Monroe. Geneva was educated in the public schools of Coahoma County. According to her son, at thirteen Geneva accepted Christ as her personal savior and was baptized at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church in Sherard. This beginning in Mississippi gave the young woman the two cornerstones of her life: church and family.

On March 7, 1953, she married Samuel Spicer Sr. in Clarksdale, Mississippi. Ultimately they had five children: Jo Ann, Samuel Spicer, Jr., Larry, Jane and Richard. The couple was married for 47 years until Samuel’s death in 2000. In 1954, the family (which included only the two oldest children at that time) moved to Monrovia. Geneva lived in the same house in Monrovia for all 62 years. In the same year she moved to Monrovia, Geneva joined that Second Baptist church. According to her family, Geneva had a great work ethic. She and her husband started their own business, Spicer Janitorial. The business served the San Gabriel Valley for many years. She also started a home-based childcare facility in the 1970s. One of her great loves, other than the church, was for children and she had a desire to work and serve others. Even with five children of her own, and in addition to all her other work,

she became a foster care parent for Los Angeles County in the 1970s through the 1990s. She never kept an actual count of the exact number of children she fostered, sometimes having as many as eight children in the course of a single week. She also received minors from law enforcement and other agencies on a 24/7 basis. As a foster care parent for the state of California in connection with the San Gabriel Pomona Regional Center, Geneva accepted children who were the victims of domestic violence and abuse into her home. Among those she welcomed into her home were those who were nonambulatory, in other words, those who were bed-ridden or otherwise unable to walk. From the mid-1990s until 2006 when her own health stared to fail, her home was a refuge for children in crisis. According to her family, “Mother Spicer loved every child that entered her home and treated them as if they were her own.” She even provided

daycare for her own greatgrandchildren. If all this were not enough, she also helped many others who stated their own home-based foster care businesses. Her family wrote a lovely tribute to their matriarch: “Mother Spicer loved her family to the end and her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and

great-great-grandchildren meant everything to her. Mother Spicer was a very giving person and she did all that she could for whomever needed help. She knew no strangers and had a contagious smile that would light up a room. “We will have fond memories of her smiles, her giving to others and not looking for anything in return, her peach cobblers and most of all how she kept us in church to learn about our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. The Word of God teaches us that our mother fought a good fight and now she has finished her race and she has kept the faith. So therefore, there is laid up for her the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, will reward her on that Day.” RE With all of this, it is no DU that R surprise she EDwas appointedCEtoD the Council UC of Mothers (a Pdistinction EDof R honor given at Second BapIC E tist Church to women age 70 or older). This honor was paid to her by Bishop William La Rue Dillard and

gave her that distinct title of “Mother Geneva Spicer” and who could deserve it more than a woman who mothered so many, her own, those who needed her, and those in crisis. Geneva was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, all of her siblings and her daughter Jo Ann Spicer Scott. She is survived by her son, Samuel Spicer, Jr. and his wife Marion, of Fontana, CA.; Monrovia Mayor Pro Tem Larry Spicer and his wife Delphine; Minister Richard Spicer and his wife Linda of Valinda, CA; and her daughter Janet and her husband, Willie Dixon, Sr. of St. Stephens, AL. In addition, she has eighteen grandchildren, 45 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren, along with a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins. A celebration of her life will be held at her beloved Second Baptist Church, 925 South Shamrock, Monrovia, on Saturday, Jan. 23 at 1 p.m. The burial will be at Live Oak Memorial Park in Monrovia.

Accident Continued from 1

against a red light, striking the first vehicle, facing east in the number one lane of Foothill Boulevard. The impact caused an additional number of vehicles to collide into each other. The MercedesBenz struck a Toyota sedan, which became airborne, landing on the hood of a large pickup truck. The Toyota then rolled off the truck onto the south sidewalk of Foothill Boulevard, narrowly missing a mother walking her child in a stroller. The child was thrown from the stroller and was later taken to the hospital for medical examination. Several vehicles were stored as part of the investigation process so accurate data can be gathered regarding the cause of this collision. Monrovia Weekly contacted Yogurtland’s General Manager, Anthony Nagatsuka, whose business has video surveillance of the accident which was turned over to Monrovia Police. Albeit very grainy, it is very dramatic footage and the Mercedes can clearly be seen hitting one vehicle which then became airborne.

Additionally, one can see the mother with the stroller getting out of harm’s way. Part of MAIT’s job requires some complex mathematics and other calculations based on the information that will be supplied by the ‘black boxes’ of the vehicles involved. As of Jan. 20, the two most seriously injured persons remain hospitalized in critical condition, but are expected to survive. The infant child that was thrown from the stroller was released from the hospital with minor injuries. Mothers and children were seen transported with minor to moderate injuries. But according to those on scene, it is a miracle no one was killed, particularly when you see the damage to so many vehicles, many of which will be write-offs. Nine patients were transported – one to USC and others to area hospitals. The investigation is led by Monrovia P.D. If you have any additional information, please contact Monrovia Police at (626) 256-8000.

Temple City Boys’ Basketball Scores a Decisive Win Over Monrovia High School

Monrovia Varsity Boys’ Soccer Steamrolls Temple City, 6-0 Photos by Trevor Stamp

Unfortunately the varsity soccer match that took place last Friday, Jan. 16, between Monrovia and Temple City was not much of a contest, as the Wildcats hammered their way to an impressive victory, finding the back of the net six times and keeping a clean sheet in the process. The boys from Monrovia are undefeated in league play (2-0), while their counterparts from Temple City have failed to come out on top thus far (0-2).

Photo by Trevor Stamp Last Friday, Jan. 15, the Temple City Rams improved their overall record to 12-6 after a convincing 67-48 victory over league rivals from Monrovia High School. With the victory, the Rams’ Rio Hondo League record is now 1-1, while the Monrovia Wildcats have fallen to 0-2.

5. Use sandbags. Sandbags can be utilized to help protect your home and property before a storm. 6. Don’t risk your life. During significant storm events, avoid waterways, flood control channels and the ocean, which can all rapidly swell and become extremely dangerous. NO PLACE outside is safe when lightning is in the area!

Be Prepared, Stay Informed 10 Ways to Weather El Niño 1. Create an emergency kit, today! If you’ve already got an emergency kit prepared, check it regularly. 2. Check your car. Make sure your car’s tires have good tread and that your windshield wipers work well. Your headlights should always be on in the rain! 3. Check your house. Clear your outdoor drains and gutters of any leaves, dirt or debris. Secure trash, recycling bins and any other items that have the potential of blowing or floating away. Have weakened trees inspected by an arborist. 4. Got flood insurance? Consider purchasing flood insurance. Keep in mind, most flood policies have a 30-day waiting period.

7. Have Emergency Alerts sent to your mobile phone and email. Register at lacounty.gov/emergency, or simply search “Alert LA County” on the web. 8. Download “The Works,” LA County’s FREE app for iPhone and Android, to report storm-related problems. 9. Prevent stormwater pollution. Rain washes everything into storm drains that lead to our rivers and ocean. Secure household hazardous waste with tight-fitting lids and store these items in covered areas. 10. Capture rainwater. Prepare your landscaped areas to capture and retain more water by using compost. Collect rain that falls on your roof by installing rain barrels.
