Charles Meier, Paradiso Float Designer, Is to the Manor Born: ‘Downton Abbey,’ That Is

BY TERRY MILLER According to a press release, acclaimed drama “Downton Abbey” on Masterpiece on PBS will get a special treat on New Year’s Day when a new float celebrating the show debuts in the 127th Rose Parade® on Jan. 1, 2016.

The Crawley family estate has been painstakingly recreated for the float, complete with a magnificent landscape depicting English rose gardens and rolling green lawns and a 1919 Bentley driven by the family chauffeur.

The float, themed “The Final Adventure” (a nod and a wink to the Rose Parade’s theme of “Find Your Adventure”), celebrates the final season “Downton Abbey” on PBS beginning Jan. 3, 2016, at 9 p.m. eastern time.

The float will feature more than 60,000 roses in 20 different varieties, including velvety Roseberry and Cherry O; fragile pink Titanic and Priceless; and English garden roses, rarely seen on Rose Parade floats.

Oriental lilies, snapdragons, hypericum, and a variety of orchids will provide accents throughout the garden.

Monrovia Facebook Page Raises Nearly $6,000 The administrators who run the Monrovia-Facebook page decided to reach out to their 4,000 members to see if they could get each person to donate $1 to help make Christmas a little better for some less fortunate residents.

Combined, the group raised $5,718.49: $3,094.40 in donations, $2,000 match,

and $659.09 in children’s gifts for people like Monique Garcia.

City of Monrovia Partnering With LA Metro on Upcoming Station Square Events During the past few weeks, Monrovia city staff has been working with representatives from LA Metro regarding several upcoming events at Station Square.

On Saturday, Dec. 19th, 2015 staff from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Education Based Incarceration (EBI) Unit worked with The Dream Center and Justin Turner of the Los Angeles Dodgers to spread some holiday cheer to children who were visiting their mothers and loved ones at the Century Regional Detention Facility in Lynwood. After their visit, all children were given a toy. Children, whose mothers were enrolled in an EBI program (high school classes, vocational classes. etc.), were given a brand new bicycle.

Justin Turner of the Dodgers said, “This is what it’s all about, seeing a smile on a child’s face is the best feeling.” Matthew Barnett, Founder of The Dream Center said, “It was a nobrainer to partner with the LA Sheriff’s Department for this event, they do so much to serve the communities.”

Sergeant Peter Gomez commented, "The entire event was a success. We know that the holiday season can be an emotional

time. It's hard on the mothers who are in jail and it is especially hard on their children who come visit them. So we did what we could to shed a little joy during Christmas time. All the hard work to coordinate an event like this was worth it, when we saw the huge smiles on children's faces as they saw gifts being passed out by Santa.

It was fun to see the kids riding their new bikes that were passed out to them by Justin Turner of the Dodgers and The Dream Center."

The Educational Based Incarceration Unit provides programs that assist all incarcerated men and women reach their full potential through education, empowerment, self-esteem, creativity and self-respect, in order to make them better parents, spouses and productive citizens in their communities.

Educating and providing life skills to the incarcerated population will enable them to enhance and develop their quality of life and become architects of their future by presenting opportunities

for spiritual, educational, and economic transformation.

A majority of the educational programs that are provided to our inmates are funded with the assistance of the Inmate Welfare

Commission (IWC). The IWC serves at the appointment of Sheriff Jim McDonnell.

El Niño Preparedness Events Set to Be Hosted By the City We have all heard about the pending El Niño season that is just around the corner. In an effort to help Monrovians prepare for the pending storm events, the city has coordinated a series of community preparedness workshops to help residents get ready

California is losing employers and jobs to other states due to its abysmal business climate. Except for New York, nowhere else in the United States has a worse combination of government spending, taxation, and labor-market restrictions, according to the Economic Freedom of North America: 2015 Annual Report, a new report from the Fraser Institute in Vancouver, in partnership with the Oakland-based Independent Institute.

“California’s dismal level of economic freedom

explains why more than 9,000 California companies have either fled the Golden State or decided to expand operations elsewhere during the past 7 years,” said Dr. Lawrence J. McQuillan, Senior Fellow and Director of the Independent Institute’s Center on Entrepreneurial Innovation. “The California Dream is disappearing for too many people who have decided to pack up and pursue their passions in other states because of oppressive California taxes, regulations, and lawsuit abuse.”

While California and

New York have the least economic freedom in the nation, New Hampshire, South Dakota, Texas, Florida, and Tennessee have the most, according to the report. The report’s rankings are of tremendous use to members of the public and the policy community who seek a better business climate for their state, especially as election season approaches.

Anxiety Raises Risk for Dementia People who experienced high anxiety any time in their lives had a 48 percent higher risk of developing dementia compared to those who had not, according to a new study led by USC researchers.

The findings were based on an examination of 28 years of data from the Swedish Adoption Twin Study of Aging, overseen by the Karolinska Institutet of Sweden. The study sample involved 1,082 participants – twins, fraternal and identical – who completed in-person tests every three years, answered several questionnaires and were screened for dementia throughout the study.

Many other studies have explored the link between dementia and psychological variables such as depression and neuroticism. However, this study established that the anxiety-dementia link was independent of the role of depression as a risk factor.

“Anxiety, especially in older adults, has been relatively understudied compared to depression,” said Andrew Petkus, the study’s lead author and postdoctoral research associate of psychology in the USC Dornsife College of Letters, Arts and Sciences. “Depression seems more evident in adulthood, but it’s usually episodic. Anxiety, though, tends to be a chronic lifelong problem, and that’s why people tend to write off anxiety as part of someone’s personality.”

A final draft of the study was made available online last week in Alzheimer’s & Dementia: The Journal of

the Alzheimer’s Association.

The researchers noted that the subjects had selfreported various levels of anxiety, which may or may not meet the clinical diagnostic threshold of a psychiatric anxiety disorder. Even so, the twin who developed dementia had a history of higher levels of anxiety compared to the twin who did not develop dementia.

The subjects with anxiety who later developed dementia “are people that experience more than usual symptoms of anxiety,” said study co-author Margaret Gatz, a professor of psychology in the USC Dornsife College of Letters, Arts and Sciences, who holds joint appointments in the USC Davis School of Gerontology and the Keck School of Medicine of USC. “They are people who you would say operate at a ‘high level of anxiety,’” said Gatz, also a foreign adjunct professor for the Karolinska Insitutet. She said they are fidgety. “They are frantic, frazzled people.”

To determine whether anxiety levels correlated to dementia risk, researchers compared those who reported high anxiety with those who reported lower anxiety levels. “Those in the high anxiety group were about 1.5 times more likely to develop dementia,” Petkus said.

Petkus said people who have high levels of anxiety tend to have higher levels of stress hormones, including cortisol. Evidence shows that chronically high levels of cortisol damage parts of the brain such as the hippocampus, which stores

memory, and the frontal cortex, which is responsible for high-level thinking.

The researchers also found that the anxietydementia relationship was stronger among fraternal twins whom had only one

develop dementia than among identical twins. The researchers said this finding indicates that there may be genetic factors shared by anxiety and dementia that account for the anxiety-dementia risk.

The USC team also hopes to determine whether individuals who have been treated for anxiety earlier in their lives show lower risk of dementia compared with those whose anxiety was not treated.

Governor Brown spent five days at the conference in Paris, during which time he met with UN SecretaryGeneral Ban Ki-moon, China's Special Envoy on Climate Change Xie Zhenhua, France's Minister of Ecology, Sustainable Development and Energy Ségolène Royal, U.S. Energy Secretary Ernest Moniz, former Vice President Al Gore and a number of world leaders at events in Le Bourget and throughout Paris organized by the French, U.S., German and Chinese governments, UNFCCC, the European Commission, the World Bank, UN Foundation, Climate Group, International New York Times, École Normale Supérieure (ENS) and many others.

Over the course of the conference, the Governor welcomed a total of 58 new signatories to the Under 2

MOU climate agreement – bringing the tally to 123 jurisdictions representing more than 720 million people and $19.9 trillion in combined GDP, equivalent to more than a quarter of the global economy.

The Under 2 MOU is an agreement to limit the increase in global average temperature to below 2 degrees Celsius, the warming threshold at which scientists say there will likely be catastrophic climate disruptions.

Signatories commit to either reducing greenhouse gas emissions 80 to 95 percent below 1990 levels or limit per capita annual emissions to less than 2 metric tons by 2050.

During one of the Under 2 MOU signing ceremonies in Paris, California and the German state of BadenWürttemberg – who together have spearheaded the Under 2 MOU – announced that The Climate Group will

take on the role of secretariat for the pact, helping the signatories share expertise and policy solutions and ensuring that governments deliver on their commitments.

The Climate Group is an international nonprofit that works with business, state and regional leaders to promote a prosperous, low carbon future. Last year, with the backing of the United Nations, it helped to create the Compact of States and Regions, a complementary initiative to the Under 2 MOU that works with governments to measure and report progress toward their emission reduction goals and ensure accountability.

Also during the Paris conference, Governor Brown and U.S. Energy Secretary Ernest Moniz announced that California will host the seventh Clean Energy Ministerial in San Francisco next year.

Metro will operate on a Sunday/Holiday schedule Christmas Day and New Year's Day, both of which fall on a Friday this year. This means bus lines without Sunday service will not operate on those days. Enhanced Metro Rail service will be provided for Grand Park's New Year's Eve event and for the Rose Parade and Rose Bowl Game in Pasadena.

A custom-made elevator lift was created for “Downton Abbey’s” central tower. This lift allows the tower to drop straight down into the center of the castle so that it can pass under power lines and bridges.

The float is 18 feet wide by

24 feet high and weighs approximately 15 tons. The float, designed by Charles Meier from Paradiso Parade Floats, took approximately 2,000 hours to construct and will take about 6,000 hours to decorate.

FBI Director James Comey Visits San Bernardino FBI Director James Comey and David Bowdich, assistant director in charge of the FBI’s Los Angeles Field Office, met with FBI personnel and federal, state and local law enforcement partners who responded to the Dec. 2 shootings in San Bernardino - and who are jointly investigating this attack that claimed the lives

of 14 victims and injured 22 others. Director Comey also met with emergency service responders, victim specialists, and community leaders in the San Bernardino area.

“Our hearts continue to ache for the families and friends who were so violently robbed of loved ones on the morning of Dec. 2, and for the surviving vic-

tims,” said Comey. “While we can’t undo this cowardly act and the impact it's had on the victims, the community of San Bernardino and the nation, the FBI, and our skilled partners offer our full support now and in the days ahead, and our commitment to work tirelessly to prevent such attacks in the future.”

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Homicide Bureau detectives have made three arrests in the shooting death of former Garfield High School football player Gabriel Soto. The victim was shot and killed on May 25, 2013, on the 600 block of South McDonnell Ave. in East Los Angeles.

Detectives and Soto’s family members requested the public’s help to catch

Gabriel’s killers. Several tips ultimately lead to the arrests of three men last week.

Jonathon Gonzalez, 28, Roque Solis, 30, and Anthony Gabriel, 25, were booked for murder.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department and Gabriel’s family would like to thank everyone who helped locate the three suspects.

An Attempt Burglary occurred between 9:30 p.m. and 10 p.m., in the 9500 block of Broadway. Someone attempted to enter her residence through the rear sliding glass door, but was unsuccessful.

A Probation Violation Warrant arrest of a MH/45 was made at 3 p.m., in the 8900 block of Las Tunas Drive. The suspect committed a vehicle code violation on a bicycle and was arrested for an outstanding warrant.

A Residential Burglary occurred between 12/15/15 6:15 p.m. and

12/16/15 11:30 p.m., in the 9800 block of Miloann Street.

Someone forced entry into a residence and stole property. Entry was made by smashing the side door window.

A Residential Burglary occurred between 8:30 a.m. and 8:50 p.m., in the 6000 block of Camellia Avenue.

An Armed Residential Burglary occurred at 1:46 p.m., in the 9200 block of Live Oak Avenue. The suspect, armed with a handgun, entered a residence through an unlocked door and demanded money and medication, which the victim gave him.

A Residential Burglary occurred between 1:45 p.m. and 2 p.m., in the 9400 block of Live Oak Avenue. Someone entered a residence and stole property.

sponded to the 700 block of South Magnolia regarding a residential burglary. The victim left his residence unsecured at 11:15 a.m. and returned home at noon.

When the victim entered his residence, he observed his computer was missing.

When he looked into his room, he saw his bedroom window was pushed open and his jewelry was missing. The investigation is continuing.

Vehicle Burglary. At 9:51 a.m., an officer responded to a business in the 900 block of West Huntington reporting a vehicle burglary. The victim parked his vehicle in the parking lot last night and returned this morning to find the rear passenger window smashed. The suspects did not take anything from the vehicle. The vehicle was parked outside of the hotel.

The investigation is continuing.

Vandalism – Suspects Arrested. At 10:45 a.m., officers responded to several calls over the past couple of days of unknown suspect(s) using a BB-gun to shoot out vehicle’s windows in the cities of Monrovia and Arcadia. Monrovia Police Department has identified at least 16 confirmed victims.

During one of the incidents in Arcadia, a witness wrote down the suspect vehicle license plate and was reported to the Arcadia Police Department. The registered owner of the suspect vehicle is a Monrovia resident.

Forgery / Mail Tampering / Warrant – Suspects Arrested. At 11:10 a.m., dispatch received a telephone call regarding a male and female suspect walking south in the 1600 block of California, while looking through mailboxes. An officer responded to the location and detained both suspects. A computer check revealed one of the suspects had an outstanding warrant and was placed under arrest.

A subsequent investigation revealed the suspects to be in possession of stolen mail, including a stolen check, which they intended to fraudulently cash. Both suspects were arrested and transported to the Monrovia Jail for booking.

A new California Appellate case just published August 8, 2013, “Glaski v.

Bank of America”, holds that a homeowner can challenge his lender’s right to foreclose by showing that the Deed of Trust never made it into the securitized trust until after the trust’s closing date. This issue is now squarely before the California Supreme Court in Yvanova v. New Century Mortgage Corp.

This is the case in most loans made in the last 12 years. If the bank foreclosed we should be able to get the homeowner money damages and/or the house back. Or a lawsuit could be filed and a court ruling obtained preventing the court from foreclosing. Recently enacted Sections 2924(a)(6) and 2924.19 of California Civil Code provide the same relief to homeowners.

It is highly suggested that homeowners take this window of opportunity to get relief before the banks get Congress to close this door with national legislation.

play by Tom Stoppard concerning the relationship between past and present, order and disorder, certainty and uncertainty. Many critics have praised it as the finest play from one of the most significant contemporary playwrights in the English language. “People have been extensively exploring the concepts of entropy and the second law of thermodynamics since they were first introduced. Within all the laws of physics - the law that entropy always increases, which is the main tenet in the 2nd law of thermodynamics - holds a prominent place - much because of its universality and implications to just

That is when the Horseless Carriage Club of America's annual Horseless Carriage Holiday Motor Excursion will form up and embark on a special drive from Irwindale to Pasadena and back.

In excess of 200 vintage motorcars, true horseless carriages, many from the very dawn of the age of the automobile and none younger than 73 years of age, will be on display with many of their drivers and passengers festively dressed up in the style(s) of the times.

The drive itself is open to pre-1932 vehicles. This remarkable confluence of hundreds of horseless carriages parking, preening, showing, staging, and then heading out on the day's run has been called, "a truly breathtaking example of rolling, running, wonderfully persevered and beloved pre-war vehicles." Descanso Gardens’ First Art Exhibit of 2016 The Sturt Haaga Gallery at Descanso Gardens will offer a new view of the natural world when it presents “Farewell, Eden,” an exhibition opening Jan. 19, 2016.

The exhibit is presented in collaboration with “Urbanature” at the Alyce de Roulet Williamson Gallery at Art Center College of Design in Pasadena. “Farewell, Eden” runs Jan. 19 through April 3.

The Life and Times of Y.C. Hong Focus of Exhibit at The Huntington

T

he United States is one big melting pot – a land of immigrants who come from far-flung corners of the world. Therefore it is almost inconceivable that there was a time when Americans were openly hostile to certain foreign nationals who wanted to come into this country.

And yet, this was the reality that You Chung (Y.C.) Hong, foremost Chinese-American immigration lawyer, encountered during the early years of the 20th century.

A practicing immigration lawyer from 1927 to 1977, Y.C. worked relentlessly on behalf of Chinese settlers and, in the span of his career, helped over 7,000 enter the country legally. He was one of the Asian experts invited to take part in President Harry Truman’s commission to study and reform the U.S. Immigration system.

Y.C.’s history and life’s work is the subject of a show currently going on the Huntington Library, Art Collections and Botanical Gardens. Li Wei Yang, curator of western American history, says, “We were compelled to mount an exhibition because

it was the first time the Huntington has received a collection about the life of a major Chinese-American figure in Los Angeles. We felt it was important to let the community know, especially in San Marino and the San Gabriel Valley, that we are serious about the preservation of Chinese-American history.

We want to show that we care about this community and that we encourage future collections of this kind.”

As the exhibition reveals, Y.C. was born in San Francisco in 1898 to Chinese-American parents who originated from southern China. His early childhood was marked by two significant events – his father died at an early age leaving his mom to raise two boys on her own. And he was accidentally dropped by a relative who was taking care of him. The resulting spinal damage limited his full height to reach only four feet and five inches tall.

In spite of his early misfortunes, Y.C. had a normal childhood. He graduated from Berkeley High School in 1915 then traveled around the country for a while, and worked as a bookkeeper at a Chinese restaurant in Boston.

and was employed as Chinese translator for the Bureau of Immigration while attending night school. He passed the California Bar Exams in 1923, a remarkable feat as he was still a year away from receiving his Bachelor’s degree from the University of Southern California (USC). He was one of the first ChineseAmericans to be licensed to practice law; he graduated in 1924 and earned his master’s degree in 1925 at USC. His 74-page master’s thesis analyzed how the extension and administration of the

Chinese Exclusion Act deviated from the original decree, making Chinese-Americans second-class citizens in their own country. In 1927, Y.C. became an immigration lawyer.

Y.C. grew up during the period when Chinese laborers were considered persona non grata. The Chinese Exclusion Act, which was in effect from 1882 to 1943, prohibited Chinese laborers from entering the country.

Chinese miners who were in California during the Gold Rush were singled out, and had to pay $4 each month for

the right to engage in mining.

This tax practically legalized discrimination.

Beginning in 1909, all Chinese with legal status in the U.S. were issued Photo Certificates of Identity – a requirement which only applied to the Chinese, until 1928. This residence certificate became their proof of their legal right to be here – if stopped by the police, they had to produce such identification or they could be arrested or deported. It was eventually replaced by the Alien Registration Receipt Card, known informally as the “green card”.

As rules became ever more stringent, making it extremely difficult for Chinese immigrants to file the necessary paperwork, much less navigate the complex process, lawyers became requisite. Successful entry into the U.S. depended on their ability to recall precise details of family history during long hours of interrogation. While immigration officers used this deterrent, it didn’t stop the Chinese from coming as they adapted to the technique. Y.C. provided his clients with a list of commonly asked questions (which numbered in the

hundreds), to which they constructed all the answers.

They then used this “cheat sheet” to pass the test – they had found a way to outsmart the authorities.

A very astute man, Y.C. recognized the value of political connections sympathetic to the Chinese. He befriended politicians and contributed to their campaigns; he worked the system.

Executive Order 10392, issued by President Truman on Sept. 4, 1952 established the President’s Commission on Immigration and Naturalization. Y.C. was one of the experts invited to give their opinions.

Y.C. practiced immigration law from 1927 until his death on Nov. 8, 1977. For 50 years the Chinese came to him for help and he responded with grace. He advocated for his people to gain acceptance into society and achieve economic stability. Any one of his countrymen who had lived through the exclusion era knew his name.

Circumstances beyond Y.C.’s control made him physically small and seemingly insignificant. But his unforgettable life and accomplishments prove him to be extraordinary writ large.

A Renaissance of Awe

For the fourth year consecutive year the Monrovia Rotary Club provided clothing and a toy to each child referred by a local service provider for the event. According to Dr. Sylvia Domotor, founder and chairperson of the event, 65 children, many of them victims of or witnesses to domestic violence or drug abuse, were the beneficiaries of a department store shopping spree, likely providing them with the only gifts they will receive this Christmas.

Each was chaperoned through Kohl’s by one of 47 student volunteers from the Interact and Renaissance clubs at Monrovia High and

by students from Kaizen martial arts. The event was paid for by year-long donations from the members of the Monrovia Rotary Club.

The sales volume at Kohl’s generated a substantial gift card bonus which will be donated to the Monrovia Public Schools.

The Monrovia Rotary Club welcomes visitors to its meetings and actively seeks service-minded individuals to join its membership. Awe is an amazing sensation. I was lucky; my father was a firm believer in cultivating that sense of awe. He would wake us up to watch rocket launches from Cape Canaveral (that shows my age). Our family vacations were to such aweinspiring locations as the Grand Canyon, Yosemite, the Grand Tetons and the like. He shared his appreciation of these things with us and we felt his awe.

I remember listening to the lunar landing in July of 1969. Unlike the rest of the nation I was not glued to my television set watching the landing. I was in a bus full of young people on our way back from an outing to Yosemite. We listened to Armstrong’s “one small step” line and his description of the fine dust on the surface of the moon. I firmly believe that hearing it was more dramatic than viewing it. The photo stream I later saw was grainy, but our imaginations were incredibly sharp. In that moment I think we were all in awe of what was occurring.

That sensation has

been sorely lacking in recent years. I constantly hear people calling things awesome when they are not. I doubt that any new video game is awesome. I doubt anyone is truly in awe of the current crop of television shows, and yet I hear such described as awesome. I am sick of the general population denigrating and diminishing the value of awe and misusing the word awesome.

Last week I was privileged to tour Goldstone, the Deep Space Communications Complex near Barstow and within Fort Irwin. The tour group was comprised of members of MADIA, the group that supports hi-tech industry in this area, and several members of the Monrovia Chamber of Commerce.

Our visit including viewing the massive antennas that gather communications from Voyager, the Mars Rovers, and other deep space craft. Anything beyond the moon is considered “deep space.” How “deep” space is becomes mind boggling when you realize that communication with Voyager takes 30 hours, and that that spacecraft is over 15 billion miles from earth. It is outside our solar system.

When messages reach earth from Voyager the power is only one billionth of a billionth of a watt. As Sonny Giroux of Harris, the company that works with the Jet Propulsion Laboratory supporting and maintaining the complex at Goldstone explained, focusing in on that ephemeral wisp of sound is like aiming a golf drive here and making a hole in one in Washington, D. C. And they are able to do that and to amplify that wisp into intelligible data. That is awesome.

Standing beneath the largest antenna at Goldstone one feels tiny. The structure supporting the dish is 24

stories high. The dish of the antenna is 70 meters across.

That is ¾ of a football field in diameter. Plopped in the center of the Rose Bowl it would cover more than from the 15 to the 15 yard lines and would drape over rows and rows of seats on the sides. It is massive and indeed, it is awesome.

And so I want to thank MADIA, and Harris, but most especially Sonny Giroux, our other tour guide, Leslie Cunkelman, ad Scott Riley who coordinated the adventure.

An Open Thank-You Note to Northrop Grumman

By Susan Motander Dear Northrop Grumman, I think it is important, especially at this time of year, to pause and say “Thank you” to those who have been especially generous this year.

Word has just reached us that you have awarded one of your “Fab School Labs” to Clifton Middle School here in Monrovia.

As a resident of Monrovia and as a graduate of Clifton, I want to thank you on behalf of the community for this most generous gift. I understand that next year Clifton and the Northrop Grumman Foundation, along with its Fab School Labs partner Flinn Scientific, will work to design and build

the new facility at the middle school. I can hardly wait to see the plans and ultimately their implementation.

I know that Monrovia High School has made great strides in improving its programs with the Math Science Academy and its new building. A new lab at Clifton will feed into that program perfectly.

This new lab will give the community better educated young people and that is a benefit to everyone. And so I wanted to take this moment to express my appreciation for this gift.

Since this is an open letter, I want to thank a few others as well. I know that Paul Flores and Ashley Barrons, two of the teachers at Clifton,

worked very hard on the video presentation to apply for this gift. I am told that the School Board and superintendent Dr. Katherine Thorossian supported those teachers in this endeavor as did Clifton’s principal, Courtney Glass.

They also deserve thanks for their efforts.

And lastly, a thanks to my editor Terry Miller who sent out reminders to the community on the day the video Clifton prepared went on Facebook for general voting and to all those in the community who took the time to vote on that day in November.

This $100,000 grant will give Clifton students wonderful new learning opportunities. And for that, I am sure the entire community is grateful.

Another recipient is Patricia Conway. Patricia Conway and her two grandsons (ages 10 and 7) lost their home to a fire in October 2015. The children’s mother is working very hard to provide for them, working two jobs and attending school. The family is having a difficult time finding a home in the area that can offer ground-level housing with laundry because of the grandmother’s mobility issues from arthritis and knee replacement. Since the fire, they have been living in a motel. $1,264.85 was her gift.

The annual event is the major fundraiser for the Civic League’s grants program. Each year the League awards grants to organizations serving woman, children and youth.

when ABBA and the Bee Gees ruled the pop music world.

By Jonathan Tsou Every day, almost 2 billion individuals can quickly pick up electronic devices and can easily communicate with hundreds, if not thousands of people from around the world. In a recent study

by Common Sense Media, a nonprofit focused on helping children, parents, and educators navigate the world of media and technology, it said that an average United States

teen spends about nine hours using social media for their enjoyment daily. What if a school district can communicate vital information to students via social media?

Arcadia Unified School District's Public Information Officer Ryan Foran is doing just that. Ryan Foran is a former anchor for CBS/FOX from Tucson, Arizona. Foran has a Bachelor’s of Arts in Broadcast Journalism and has been awarded both as

a news reporter and a communications professional.

He has also taught a multimedia journalism course at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. In a statement regarding the use of social media in Arcadia Unified School District, Ryan Foran said that "social media is an essential tool for our communication outreach plan," social media provides "latest news and information related to our schools and district."

Foran has formed a Digital Communications internship program that allows students from Arcadia High School who have an interest in advanced communications and journalism to get involved. Members can help Arcadia Unified School District create a stronger presence on social media pages, such as Facebook, Twitter, Weibo, and Instagram. Each student goes through a rigid interview panel and a probationary period before becoming an official intern. The students are held accountable to a high standard that represent the school district.

The program is similar to an Advanced Placement Course (AP) as it not only teaches each student communication techniques, but it helps prepare them for college and beyond.

Travis Chen, one of the first members, said that the program has provided him "endless opportunities in journalism, photography, cinematography, communications, interview, and so much more." Members of the group, often called, "minions," must have a passion for working collaboratively with others in a team setting and

must be eager to learn.

Although the group has weekly meetings where they discuss future projects, review past projects, and attend lectures, it is more of a freelance group. Students must be willing to work independently on their own time.

In a recent interview with Chris Robin, members Melaine Mak and Chris Chen both stressed that the program has helped them find a passion in communications and discover the importance for a school district to create a strong relationship with their students and parents.

They also have both learned several life lessons and life skills regarding their future

and their future careers.

Currently, the internship program has 15 digital journalists who cover news from around the district. Members can learn how to write news stories, produce videos, create promotional materials, and help organize and publicize district events. Applications for next semester will be open until Dec. 28, 2015.

When asked about the goal of the program, Ryan Foran said that he wants this program to become "the best high school internship program in the country."

New Directions Veterans Choir Showcased

ells Fargo will be sponsoring the 127th Rose Parade’s closing show, “This is My Country”, featuring the New Directions Veterans Choir, an awardwinning acappella group comprised of veterans who have served proudly in the United States Military but whose sever struggles following their service left them homeless. The goal is to raise awareness for nonprofit organizations helping homeless and wounded veterans.

a proud sponsor of Tournament of Roses® activities and events for ten consecutive years, and as part of the sponsorships has featured a nonprofit organization riding in the stagecoach equestrian units in the Rose Parade.

New Directions for Veterans (NDVets) gave these brave men and women hope and a new lease on life, and now these talented singers are an inspiration to others.

The Wells Fargo Foundation has supported NDVets in Los Angeles for the past five years, and during that time has do-

nated nearly $300,000 to their programs for homeless veterans Since 1992, New Directions for Veterans (www. ndvets.org) has been providing transitional and permanent supportive housing, as well as mental health services, substance abuse treatment, job training and placement, legal assistance, and financial literacy education, to at-risk and homeless veterans. Each year, the agency serves more than 1,100 veterans and their families throughout Los Angeles County.

In the 2016 Rose Parade the iconic Wells Fargo stagecoaches are hosting participants of Warriors to Summits, a program of No Barriers USA, a nonprofit whose mission is to provide transformative

expeditions for veterans with disabilities and help them reach new personal heights. The program uses mountains as a metaphor to help wounded veterans overcome physical, mental, and emotional bar-

riers. The summit team devoted months to preparing and learning the skills that helped them make the climb and spent time volunteering with Wells Fargo team members as leaders who serve.

The stagecoaches and horses are presented by the staff from Wells Far-

go’s Stagecoach Appearance Program. The drivers, George, Charlene and Justin

Lane are from Lancaster, Calif. and have been with Wells Fargo since 1990.

Wells Fargo has issued a special limitededition plush pony that is co-branded with the Tournament of Roses logo and only available in Southern California in time for the New Year. The plush pony also has a story of saving a

soldier, and is named after and created in the likeness of, a real horse in Bakersfield California. The horse, named Nellie, and her Wells Fargo driver, Rush Blodget, ordinarily picked up packages to deliver to customers, but in 1897,

following the Spanish American War, they picked up a sick soldier returning from service that turned out to be Blodget’s brother. Thanks to Nellie, Sgt. Claude Blodget survived and eventually made a full recovery.
