Smith will again be center stage when Santa Anita Park opens for its 79th Winter Meeting on Saturday, Dec. 26. The Great Race Place will open with a bang, as it will present four graded stakes, highlighted by a pair of Grade I stakes - the Malibu and La Brea, the day after Christmas.

In addition to Espinoza and Smith, Hall of Famers Gary Stevens, Kent Desormeaux, and Alex Solis will again be full-time members of Santa Anita’s exclusive jockey colony.

Additionally, Peruvian sensation Rafael Bejarano, who notched his 24th Southern California riding title at

All Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) campuses were closed Tuesday morning, Dec. 15 “until further notice,” after LAUSD received a “credible terror threat,” according to school district officials.

Mercy Santoro, associate superintendent at Pasadena Unified School District (PUSD) assured the public there were no threats to our immediate area schools: “There are no known threats to the PUSD. It is safe to send your children to school today [Dec. 15. PUSD is in contact with the Pasadena Police Department and local law enforcement, who are monitoring the situation in LAUSD. We are undoubtedly concerned about this situation in LAUSD. The safety of our students and staff is always a top priority.”

The threat to LAUSD sent via email to a school board member Monday evening (Dec. 14) is from an IP address in Frankfurt, Germany.

The “messaged” threat mentioned backpacks and other packages, Superintendent Ramon Cortines said at a morning news conference.

He described the nature of the threat as “unspecified.”

Cortines ordered all schools be thoroughly searched to ensure the

grounds were “safe for children.”

Other districts in Southern California reported receiving no threats to their schools and were operating their campuses normally this past Tuesday.

However there were similar threats to schools in New York.

Cortines felt it was important to take the precaution “based on what has happened recently, and what has happened in the past,” he said, alluding to the recent mass shooting in San Bernardino, which was being investigated by the FBI as an “act of terrorism.”

The Los Angeles Police Department and the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department were assisting school police in search operations of all campuses.

LAUSD is the second largest school district in the country, serving more than 640,000 students between kindergarten and 12th grade.

The New York threats were deemed not credible: "These threats are made to promote fear...we cannot allow us to raise the levels of fear," New York City Police Commissioner William Bratton tweeted.

He added that the agency was working closely with the FBI and the LAPD. For information call (213) 241-2064.

Roger Hernández Announces Bid to Run for Congress

A Residential Burglary occurred between 10/19/15 and 12/07/15 at 5 p.m., in the 9700 block of Olive Street. Someone forcibly entered the residence through a locked window and ransacked the interior of the residence.

An Attempt Residential Burglary occurred between 12/6/15 10 p.m. and 12/7/15 9 a.m., in the 9800 block of Lemon Avenue.

Someone attempted to forcibly enter the front door, but was unsuccessful. The victim noticed pry marks to the front door frame.

December 8

A Residential Burglary occurred at 5:20 p.m., in the 10000 block of Lower Azusa Road. Someone entered the location through the kitchen window, but appeared to be scared off by an audible alarm which covers the residence.

A Commercial Burglary occurred between 12/7/15 10 p.m. and 12/8/15 9:30 a.m., in the 5700 block of Rosemead Boulevard. Someone smashed the front window of the business and stole property. There was video surveillance of the incident.

December 11

A Felon in Possession of Pepper Spray arrest of a MW/46 was made at 11 a.m., in the 5300 block of Rosemead Boulevard. Deputies contacted the suspect regarding a defrauding an innkeeper call. The suspect is a convicted ex-felon in possession of pepper spray.

Two additional suspects were arrested for warrants.

A Grand Theft occurred at 6:15 p.m., in the 6500 block of Rosemead Boulevard. Someone took a purse from an unlocked vehicle.

An Attempt Residential Burglary occurred at 6:16 p.m., in the 5800 block of Camellia Avenue. The suspect knocked on a front door, but the resident did not answer.

A short time later, the suspect attempted to gain entry into the residence through a rear window, but was unsuccessful.

At approximately 10:37 p.m., an officer responded to a residence in the 1000 block of Arcadia Avenue regarding a package theft report. An investigation revealed an unknown male suspect using the name “Ren Chun Tian” signed for the delivery of the victim’s packages and fled with her property. The reported loss is more than $1,500 in clothing and makeup. No suspects were seen and no witnesses were located.

Around 11:28 a.m., an officer responded to a residence in the 000 block of West Santa Anita Avenue regarding a fraud report.

At approximately 1:09 a.m., officers responded to a residence in the 1900 block of Tulip Lane regarding a burglary report. An investigation revealed two suspects forcibly entered the home in an attempt to burglarize the location, however once the suspects located the residents, one of the suspects repeatedly struck the 54-year-old male victim in the head with an unknown object. Arcadia Fire transported the victim to Huntington Memorial Hospital for treatment. The investigation is ongoing.

At 1:41 a.m., a resident in the 900 block of South Fifth Avenue who was the victim of domestic violence called police to report the wanted suspect was on his way to the location in a taxi. Officers responded to the area, but the suspect fled on foot when officers attempted to detain him. He was apprehended after a short foot chase. He was arrested and taken into custody.

Assault with a Deadly Weapon/Vehicle. At 2:10 p.m., dispatch received a call reporting that a vehicle had just run over a pedestrian in the area of Linwood and Violet. When officers arrived, they located a male subject suffering from a possible broken leg.

The victim reported that he and his adult sister were in an argument. She got into a vehicle and started to leave.

He asked her not to take the vehicle and stood in front of it. She then hit him with the vehicle.

The victim was thrown onto the windshield and then rolled off the side and onto the ground. He sustained injuries to his leg and soreness to his upper body. Officers arrived and searched the area for the suspect, but did not locate her. A wanted person entry was made into the law enforcement database for the suspect and the vehicle.

Wanted Firefighter Shoots Bounty Hunters, Self

Suspect Charged With Assaulting a Woman in El Monte, Among Other Charges The search for a wanted Los Angeles County firefighter came to an end this past week as he shot at bounty hunters before turning the gun on himself, according to the Riverside Sheriff’s Department.

Richard Loken, 38, was wanted on a $60,000 warrant after failing to appear in court earlier this month. Loken was charged with assaulting a woman in El Monte, among other charges.

Riverside County Sheriff’s Department said officers found Loken dead of a selfinflicted gunshot wound in a hotel room.

Officers from the Moreno Valley Police Department responded to a call of an assault with a deadly weapon on the 24000 block of Elder Avenue shortly after 5 p.m. last Wednesday. Moreno Valley contracts with the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department.

Officers later found Loken dead in a hotel room.

Mother Found Sane When She Killed Her Children

A judge today found a 32-year-old woman sane at the time she fatally stabbed her young daughters, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office announced.

Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Ricardo R. Ocampo deliberated for less than a day before finding Carol Ann Coronado sane when she killed her three daughters, ages one, two, and twomonths old, on May 20, 2014.

In a bench trial, the same judge found Coronado guilty of three counts of first-degree murder in case BA425234 on Nov. 30. Additionally, the judge found true the special circumstance allegation of multiple murders, as well as the special allegation that Coronado personally used a deadly and dangerous weapon, a knife, in the commission of the crime. Deputy District Attorney Emily Spear of the

Victim Impact Program prosecuted the case. Coronado returns to court on Jan. 7, 2016 for sentencing before Judge Ocampo in Department J of the Los Angeles County Superior Court, Compton Branch.

The defendant faces a possible maximum sentence of life in state prison without the possibility of parole. The case was investigated by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

Loken was accused of grabbing a woman’s breast while she walked near Potrero Elementary School in El Monte on Sept. 16. Police later found him near the school at 2611 Potrero Ave. The El Monte Police Department found a loaded handgun, handcuffs, and a personal Taser in Loken’s truck.

The District Attorney’s office charged Loken with fel-

ony possession of a firearm in a school zone, misdemeanor sexual battery, misdemeanor false imprisonment, and a misdemeanor count of having a concealed weapon in a vehicle. Loken pleaded not guilty to the charges.

A former Marine, Loken started working for the fire department in December 2005. The firefighter/paramedic was based at a fire station in Commerce.

code. In contrast to most cities in the San Gabriel Valley, Arcadia’s code does not include a FAR or floorarea-ratio for determining limits on home sizes.

For decades Arcadia’s antiquated code was not a major liability. Most homeowners added onto their existing homes and new homes were built with respect for the existing neighborhoods. New homes increased in size to reflect modern desires, but did so at 30%, 50% or sometimes 100% increase in square footage.

What has changed is the speculator-driven practice of building new homes that are 200%, 300% or even larger than the existing homes in a neighborhood. This is all about profit and greed amongst the development and real estate professionals and the investors who fund them. It has little to do with neighborhoods, residents or community.

ing code, where there is no FAR, basements are not counted, garages are not counted, etc. The new practice is to build to the absolute limits the code allows and then seek variances whenever possible to build even bigger. In many cases the new homes exceed 65% on a FAR basis. Neighboring cities have FARs limited to 35% to 40%.

Because speculators have caused building practices to change, especially in the past five to 10 years, Arcadia’s residential zoning code needs to change.

This has already occurred in nearly every other city in the area.

Why not Arcadia?

One reason, but surely not the only reason, is that several of Arcadia’s former mayors like Mr. Helms, Mr. Harbicht, Mr. Wuo and Mr. Chandler seem to care much more about the desires of speculators, investors, developers and realtors, than they do about residents. The inaction by many of Arcadia’s former mayors and two current councilmen to address this issue head on, shows where their allegiance lies. They are motivated by personal profit and avarice, and the campaign contributions from the speculators that keep them in office.

This is not about the Arcadia of yesteryear or dreams of an “Old Arcadia”.

This is greed and politics.

Where a proud community of homes once stood, a new “community of investment properties” has arisen. And it has permanently altered Arcadia.

Reader Urges Public Never to Abandon Cats To Editor: The article about one kitten rescued was what I would call “overkill.” I’m glad that the kitten was finally taken home to the depressed girl because most people wouldn’t have bothered but all those details weren’t necessary. I know a cat rescuer who has fed, trapped, neutered and placed many cats, in fact dozens! Some were fed for a long time before successfully trapping, some disappeared, some placed by a group, and some kept by the rescuers. This occurred over a period of 10 years and she prevented many unwanted kittens from ending up in shelters. Feral cats don’t’ have a chance at a shelter unless someone has patience to tame them.

Hours were spent feeding and trapping and money spent on food and vet bills.

The larger picture here is to keep cats indoors, don’t let a female have “just one litter,” never abandon a cat, give them the same consideration as a dog, speak up against cruelty, support spay and neuter programs, don’t buy a “purebred” and don’t buy so-called faux fur items made in China (fur from cruelly treated cats).

Local Resident Wants McDonald’s to Think Outside the Box, ’Where Is Franklin?’ age him to create an (at the time Negro) African-American character - back in 1968.

A second letter to Mr. Schulz and letters of support from all around the country touched his heart, and Franklin was born on the comic strip and on the television shows.

While Franklin turned 47 years old this past summer he is the most elusive “Peanuts” character to find in stores.

McDonald’s is noted for its promotions with Happy Meals, you know “a free toy inside when you purchase

a Happy Meal.” McDonald’s needs to think outside of their corporate Happy Meal’s Box and include historical references, especially when it comes to the importance of racial desegregation.

My recent trip to McDonald’s was an unhappy meal. No Franklin Armstrong figurine. Franklin did not make the promotional cut but he was in “Peanuts the Movie.”

Several calls were made to McDonald’s headquarters in Oak Brook, Ill: (800) 244-6227. They did reply,

only with an email, a lot of words about the marketing staff and their decision: Reference number 12609273 (case of the “Unhappy Meal”).

eeking a way to escape from the volatile events that have been occurring, such as the terrorist attack in San Bernardino and countless shootings in the United States and abroad, the world often turns to film for solace.

A trip to the movies can often take us away from these surrounding and distance us from world events, albeit briefly.

The new film “Peanuts the Movie” about the adventures of that world famous comic strip character and his gang is being touted by that famous hamburger chain McDonald’s minus one important character Franklin Armstrong.

Franklin Armstrong is known as Charlie Brown’s faithful friend and confidant but he is noticeably absent in the new Happy Meal’s box the chain provides for children.

Franklin is so special to me because I know the effort that was put forth to establish the character.

‘Peter Pan and Tinker Bell: A Pirates Christmas’ A Show for Those Who Will Never Grow Old

n Dec. 9th, Pasadena Playhouse opened the panto musical “Peter Pan and Tinker Bell A Pirates Christmas”. For those unfamiliar with this type of show, panto is a sort of stage production aimed at providing entertainment for the entire family by taking a traditional story (in this case Peter Pan) and adding slapstick comedy, audience participation, and modern day music and references with hopefully clever twists.

Produced by Lythgoe Family Productions, this show, for the most part, stays true to this British tradition, which the producers have been trying to engender here in the states for the last few years. On stage, you will find unique takes on this toldto-death tale. For example, you will find a Latina Tinker Bell, played by Chrissie Fit, who wears Heelys (those hybrid rollerblade sneakers that you see kids use to glide around the mall), youngsters performing energetic, choreographed dance sequences with hover boards, a bunch of Disney Channel veterans singing in colorful costumes, and oh, J. Peterman from “Seinfeld” (John O’Hurley). Now, admittedly, this hodgepodge of quirky actors and, at times, cheesy dialogue results in a show that may occasionally make some want to roll their eyes, but this all seems par for the course with panto. Overall, the show has a lot to appreciate.

down from the rafters, the cast exhibits some impressive talent, especially the younger members who offer up a mix of hip hop dancing and melodious singing, complemented by both pop music and Disney-esque melodies.

Kevin Quinn, who plays Peter Pan, is charming, albeit as comically hammy as pretty much everyone else on the stage. Sabrina Carpenter, who plays Wendy, shows off a truly magnificent voice, and Fit is quite funny. Even if at times it may feel like we are watching a bunch of aspiring teen actors vying to become the next Disney pop star, overall the cast wins over the audience with their youthfulness and energy.

Perhaps the best parts of the show are delivered by O’Hurley and Parvesh Cheena, who play Captain Hook and Smee, respectively. With humorous ad-libbing and consistently lively personas, they have us smiling whenever they come onto stage.

Sure, this performance is not the typical Christmas play that we are used to seeing this time of the year and the writing does not live up to the likes of playwright luminaries such as Arthur

Miller or David Mamet, but it is panto. As long as you go in knowing that it is a show meant to be silly, tonguein-cheek, self-referential, and entertainment aimed to bring the family to the theatre, then this show can be quite a bit of fun, especially for those, like Pan, who never grow old.

entertainment A ‘Glorious’ Christmas Carol

A Noise Within Theatre Company (ANW) has reopened its adaptation of the Charles Dickens’ classic, “A Christmas Carol,” finishing off a strong season of praiseworthy plays. Directed by the company’s creative directors, Julia Rodriguez-Elliott and Geoff Elliott, who also provides the adaptation and stars as Scrooge, this iteration of “A Christmas Carol” is actually in its fourth year.

For the few unfamiliar with the story, the Dickens novella on which the play is based is a ghost story of sorts about cantankerous miser Ebenezer Scrooge, who bah humbugs (yup, verb form) any Christmas cheer thrown his way. On the night of Christmas Eve, he is warned by the spirit of his dead business associate, who means to save Scrooge from a dreary fate afforded by a life of selfishness and solitude, that three ghosts will visit him in the middle of the night to show him his bitter past, lonely present, and bleak future that he may avoid if he were to change his ways.

As the company has done faithfully in many other productions, Elliott’s translation maintains a level of authenticity with its prose both in the dialogue and narration provided by the charming Freddie Douglas who pops in and out of stage to provide needed exposition. Yet, this same faithfulness to Dickens’ verbiage could also dissuade certain audiences more accustomed to commercial theater in which dialogue may be dumbed down to appeal to the masses, especially with younger audiences who may associate the name Scrooge with a swimming pool of gold coins.

The actors, as they have done in many other productions, “A Flea in Her Ear” and “All My Sons” to name a few, collaborate well together, each performance complementing the other rather than competing, resulting in an increasingly engrossing experience. Incredibly surprising is Geoff Elliott who balances his roles of codirector, adapter, and lead of the play. Elliott who most recently took the stage as Joe Keller in “All My Sons” proves an ability to truly immerse himself in his characters to a

point where you would think his Joe Keller and his Ebenezer Scrooge were played by two completely different actors. His performance goes beyond just different costumes or accents; rather, he is able to provide a completely different presence that draws us in in profoundly unique ways.

And despite the stage space being smaller than more known venues, the production value rivals the likes of those in more lavish theaters such as the Pantages or Ahmanson (and trust me, this is not an exaggeration). A prime example of this is in the introduction of the Ghost of Christmas Past, wonderfully performed by Deborah Strang when she swings in, quite literally, appearing out of nowhere like magic. Specific kudos go to Angela Balogh Calin, Jeanine A. Ringer, and Brandon Hawkinson, who provide wonderfully crafted and planned costumes, scenic design and lighting, keeping with a truly authentic Dickensian feel, with a slight tinge of Gothic, Tim Burtonesque visuals.

ANW has succeeded in offering a warm and wondrous holiday experience. Let’s hope that in the new year, ANW continues to bring, as the final musical number goes, “glorious” productions. This reviewer would give a shilling for that.

Heck, I would even give half a crown.

A Child’s Chance to Dance With Moscow Ballet Principal Ballerina This holiday season, young local dancers in Los Angeles will be given a special opportunity: they will audition, rehearse and perform with a professional ballet company of 40 in the Moscow Ballet’s “Great Russian Nutcracker.” For 23 years, Moscow Ballet’s “Dance with Us” program has given over 50,000 children in the United States and Canada, from coast to coast, the opportunity to experience the challenges and rewards of preparing for and participating in a professional performance. For many dance students, this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity: “Our local Dance with Us kids … had an experience you couldn’t put into words.

It was amazing,” said Jordan Petersen-Fitts, co-owner of Cuyahoga Falls Dance Studio, Moscow Ballet host dance studio.

Moscow Ballet auditions local children ages seven to 16 for roles that are created to suit different age and skill levels. Four Moscow Ballet soloists - Olga Aru, Zhanna Golubenko, Olena Nalyvaiko and Mariia Skoruk - work as audition and rehearsal directors from August to October traveling to almost all of the 80-plus cities on the North American tour. ou would think that kids these days enjoy spending most of their time in front of their electronic gadgets, learning and playing games on them. This past Sunday proved otherwise! Beacon Media and Taipei Economic and Cultural Office (TECO) presented its inaugural Board Games Connecting Cultures event, whose mission it is to teach children how to play board games from all over the world in order to provide a better mutual cultural understanding. The program, taught by international instructors, saw volunteers from Ethiopia, Taiwan, Columbia, Germany, and the United States come together to share some of their favorite childhood board games, such as Gebet’a, Mensch ärgere dich nicht, Chinese chess, and more, with children from the surrounding area at the TECO Cultural Center in El Monte. TECO also featured a tour of their facility. The lucky raffle winners received an $800 value gift certificate for a family portrait by photographer Bea Lamar and a pair of Clippers tickets.

he Broad Museum is now open in downtown Los Angeles at 221 South Grand Ave. The Broad is a new contemporary art museum built

by Eli and Edythe Broad. The museum offers free general admission and expensive, but convenient, on-site parking for $12; cheaper parking is available for $6 to $9 off of Olive Street. The museum houses around 2000 works of art from the Broad’s collection and features regular public programming.

The building’s distinctive honeycombed exterior architecture is art in itself and the collection inside is equally impressive. The first and third floors are filled with room after room of heavy hitters including: Ruscha, Lichtenstein, Warhol, Twombly, Koons, and Jasper Johns to name a few. My favorites were the Murakamis (floor to ceiling mega paintings, wrapping around corners rarely seen displayed in this fashion), an amazing hyper-real Chuck Close selfportrait titled “John 71 – 72”

(where is an accompanying pixilated abstract to go with it?!), and the gallery of Basquiats.

The second floor warehouses the rest of the nondisplayed collection. Two small windows give you a glimpse at what you are missing: row upon row of paintings hung on sliding metal racks. If I had a billion dollars (and who does not?), I would install an arcade game crane that would allow you select a painting from the vault and have it brought to a viewing window.

General admission tickets can be reserved online in advance. Get there very early on weekends if you want to experience Yayoi Kusama’s “Infinity Mirrored Room” (separate on-site reservation required) otherwise the wait can be quite lengthy. Mirrors cover the walls, ceiling and floors of the LED light-filled reflective room. You stand on a platform in the center of the room for 45 seconds and watch the stars and space unfold around you and your infinite reflections. If you like

While The Broad is soaking up all the limelight as of late, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) is knocking it out of the park with a trio of current exhibits. First there is the “Rain Room” - a participatory installation by the Londonbased artist collective Radom International. In a nutshell it is a darkened room with a rainstorm (317 gallons per minute!) cascading down in the center. As you move in towards the downpour, sensors detect your presence and the rain ceases in your immediate vicinity. If you move too fast the sensors do not have time to react and you get a bit wet. A bright light shines into the cloudburst from the corner and makes for amazing photography opportunities.

We got lost in the experience and were kicked out after the allotted 15 minute visit.

Universal or Disney should knock off this ride as soon as possible!

Next up: James Turrell's “Breathing Room”. This installation was just as mindbending as the “Rain Room”, but we kept dry. First you take off your shoes, put on the paper booties and walk up and into the exhibit space.

The feeling is like you are stepping onto the center of a cloud. Without giving too much away, the walls of the room are difficult to detect which alters your depth perception and the colors within subtly transition over time to change the atmosphere. I could have stayed for hours, but again 10 to 15 minutes and you are on your way to the next exhibit.

Last, but not least, the Frank Gehry exhibit - spectacular. It is a comprehensive review of his work from the ‘60s onward with over 200 drawings and 65 models of existing, proposed, and potential projects. The exhibition's two main themes are

urbanism and the development of new digital design systems and fabrication required to execute his space bending buildings (e.g. Los Angeles’ Disney Hall or The Guggenheim Museum in Bil-

Music and Memories of Frank Sinatra

This being the year of Frank Sinatra’s 100th birthday, Arcadia Senior Services is having a two-part musical presentation about the life and music of Frank Sinatra.

The first part will be on Tuesday, Jan. 5, 2016 at the Arcadia Community Center (365 Campus Drive) at 1:15 p.m.

Larry Maurer, educator and film historian in American music, will take you down memory lane with a two-part series on the American singer, actor, director, and producer Frank Sinatra. You will learn about the early years of Sinatra and his road to stardom. Frank is one of the bestselling musical artists of all time, selling more than 150 million records worldwide.

Sinatra was also the recipient of 11 Grammy Awards.

Residential units range from one-bedroom, nearly 1,100 square feet to four-bedroom, 2,200-square-foot flats, and commercial space is divided into more than 9,800 square feet for retail and about 9,500 square feet for food service.

The condos will range in price from $550,000 to $795,000, said Michael Hastings, who spoke on behalf of the project applicant.

The developer is James Chou of Pacific Plaza Arcadia, and the architect is Richard Abe. Though no commercial tenants are lined up at this early stage of the project, the idea is to attract high-end retailers and food service businesses, officials said.

The property owner has received letters of intent from Lohas Supermarket, 85°C Bakery and Limericks Tavern Chop House, according to Hastings and the staff report.

Two residents spoke in favor of the project, while three locals expressed concern about issues such as traffic and parking impacts, privacy for the adjacent

neighborhood and nighttime alcohol consumption so close to a residential area.

Officials required more than 40 conditions of approval, including several that council members added just prior to their unanimous thumbs-up for the project.

These included limiting rental units to a third of the condominiums; allowing the prospective bakery tenant to operate daily for 16 hours from 5 a.m. to midnight while other commercial tenants can choose a 16hour period between 6 a.m. and midnight; and requiring wheel-lock systems on shopping carts to keep them on the property and out of neighborhoods.

Rusnak's Underground Utilities The council voted 4-1 to authorize a deal with Rusnak Mercedes-Benz in which the city will fund $750,000 of an estimated $1 million project

by Southern California Edison to shift overhead utility poles to an underground system.

The company will provide the remaining 25 percent of the project cost and repay the city from sales tax revenue throughout the next decade.

The existing utility poles on Morelan Place border the Rusnak property, which stretches southward to Huntington Drive along Santa Anita Avenue.

"The Agreement includes a promissory note for the reimbursement of the City's share from future local sales tax revenues from the Rusnak Dealership," states a city staff report. "If, at the end of 10 years of operation, the City's share has not been fully reimbursed, Rusnak will be responsible for paying any outstanding balance."

The report notes a history of unrealized utility undergrounding: "The undergrounding of these lines had been the focus of several City efforts over the years, including the planned vacation of Morlan Place at one point, and earlier plans to redevelop this area. These projects never went forward. More recently, Rusnak had been considering funding the relocation of the overhead lines to the south side of the street, and they offered to put their relocation funding toward undergrounding the utilities, if the City would fund the balance."

Beck voted against the agreement.

"We're giving them taxpayer money to do this deal," he said. "They're paying us back out of sales tax revenue that ... we could use for multiple purposes. ... I don't agree that we should use this taxpayer money to benefit this one business owner in town."

City Manager Dominic Lazzaretto explained the deal as amounting to $875,000 paid by Rusnak annually over 10 years, which represents the loan repayment on top of the $800,000 base of sales tax revenue the dealership provides each year.

"That dealership is like having an annuity to this

city with the investment that they ultimately make," Mayor Pro Tem Roger Chandler said.

Funding and Donation Council members approved the following funding expenditures: $57,500 to Anaheim-based Amtech Elevator Services to upgrade the Arcadia Library's elevator; $70,000 to Sigmanet for computer hardware and software in an effort to upgrade the Police Department's dispatch and records management system.

The city received a $10,000 donation from the Arcadia Museum Foundation for artifacts, supplies and programming at the Gilb Museum of Arcadia Heritage.

Pamela Gustin Campion, 91 years young, left us on Nov. 5, 2015, at Riverbend Hospital in Eugene, Ore. All three of her daughters were at her bedside when she died.

Pamela was born Aug. 31, 1924, in Bay City, Mich. to Nelson Sage Gustin and Florence Sharp Gustin. She lived with her parents and two brothers in Grosse Pointe, Mich. until moving to southern California during the Great Depression.

The family resettled in Pasadena and Pamela graduated from what was then known as Holmby College. Due to a congenital dislocation of the hip at birth Pam dealt with a certain amount of disability and pain, but never succumbed to her limitations.

As a result, she was one feisty lady.

Pamela met her husband Paul Campion on a blind date during the war.

Paul served in the United States Army Air Corps and was stationed in Pasadena while he studied meteorology at Caltech. In 1945 Paul was shipped to Dalhart, Texas where he and Pam married. After the war, Pam and

Paul moved bak to Pasadena and built a house in the foothills of Sierra Madre where they lived for 56 years, raising three daughters.

Pamela volunteered for the American Red Cross, Hathaway Home for Children, and was intricately involved in the formation and running of the still-thriving Creative Arts Group in Sierra Madre, a nonprofit art center and gallery.

Pamela recycled before anyone even knew what the word meant and was a prolific needle pointer. Perhaps her greatest achievement was in genealogy where she meticulously researched, di-

agrammed, and wrote about her family, tracing them back to the 17th century.

For 30 years Pam, Paul, and their children and friends spent vacation time at Lake Mohave on the Colorado River in Arizona where they owned a boat and a trailer. Pam filled her time scouring beaches, filling her garbage and recycling bags to the brim.

Pam and Paul loved music, entertained often, and travelled throughout Europe, Africa, Mexico, and the United States.

Pamela was predeceased by her husband of 66 years, Paul, and her two brothers. She is survived by her daughters Chris Kehoe (Pat) of Springfield, Ore., Kitty Kleppert (Tom) of Portland, Ore. and Molly (Will) of Pine, Colo. Pam is also survived by six grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Many thanks to Sheldon Park Senior Living in Eugene, Ore. where Pam spent the last few years of her life, and also a special thank you to the Sacred Heart Hospice staff for their loving care of Pamela during her final months.

Ken Bell Mentors Duarte’s Youth

By May S. Ruiz As Ken Bell puts it, he might not be here today if it were not for a vice principal’s timely and thoughtful involvement when he was a very young student living in Los Angeles.

After Bell beat a gang member one Friday morning in school, word went around that there was going to be a showdown between him and the same gang member when school let out. The wise vice principal sent him home 15 minutes before school ended and when the kids came back to class the following week, they had forgotten the incident. Thus, trouble was successfully averted.

That lesson he learned early in life taught him the value of intervention to avoid a possible combustible situation. It stayed with him during his years at the “Hard Core Gang Unit” in the district attorney’s office. And it was what prevented riots from breaking out after the Rodney King beating trial in 1992.

Anticipating problems after the Rodney King proceedings verdict, Bell invited 19 inner-city gang leaders to his church on 52nd and Hoover Street in Los Angeles to meet with the various police chiefs of LA County. Bell smiles as he recounts that momentous event, “No one has ever managed to get law enforcement officers and gang leaders together. It was tough getting them there, but it was tougher getting them to leave – the communication was so good that a certain respect was reached among them.”

As a member of the Duarte School Board, Bell created the Yes, We Can! (as in: yes, we can have a safe campus and get along as fellow students) program in the city’s middle schools. The program was not anti-gang, it was anti-violence. According to Bell, he selected 25 student leaders on campus to serve as role models for kids in elementary school.

With the sponsorship of The Gas Company, Bell held an all-day summer camp at Monrovia Canyon Park for these Yes, We Can! student leaders. He invited several prominent city officials, including district attorney, Jackie Lacey, to be guest speakers. During the camp, they also discussed possible situations they might come across, and how to handle these.

all six elementary schools in Duarte. There they spoke to sixth graders and discussed transitioning to seventh grade. Alumni of the elementary schools spoke of their middle school experience; this helped calm the minds of kids about what awaited them in seventh grade.

The Yes, We Can! campaign was eventually handed over to the school counselors and Bell went on to start yet another initiative – STAR or Students Taking Action Responsibly. Some “graduates” of “Yes, We Can!” are now in STAR. It is a two-year program aimed at holding various campus activities promoting campus safety.

The Duarte Unified School District (DUSD) will now be known as the place Where Everybody Belongs (WEB). To help Duarte’s youth ease into new grade levels confidently and smoothly, DUSD has implemented national programs such as WEB and Link Crew.

WEB is a middle school orientation and transition program that partners eight grade mentors with seventh graders. Transitioning from elementary to middle school or middle school to high school can be a daunt-

ing prospect. Every transitioning student is assigned a mentor and all student mentors go through an application and interview process; those selected then receive two days of extensive leadership and mentoring training.

Throughout the year, WEB and Link Crew mentors put on various social and academic activities for the seventh and ninth graders, ranging from holiday parties to team competitions, to classroom lessons on bullying prevention and school success. More importantly, WEB and Link Crew mentors are a source of encouragement and support for seventh and ninth graders on campus, and the programs ensure that all students feel they are in a place where everyone belongs.

Schools, parents, and society in general, are all responsible for providing a positive and safe environment for all young people.

That is why Bell has spent all his time, after retirement, to be a mentor and fatherfigure to all the Duarte students. He knows that young people need to be able to talk to someone they can trust. Timely intervention can save one young man from a gangster life. Bell can attest to that with utmost certainty.

Bell’s efforts on behalf of the youth have not gone unnoticed. For his dedicated service to the affairs of the community and numerous contributions to the residents of L.A. County, the NAACP Pasadena Branch honored him with the Community Award. He was feted during the 30th Annual Ruby Knight Williams Awards Dinner held back on Oct. 8.

For Bell, it has been a journey from a possible life on the edge of violence to one of model citizenship.

City Responds to Azusa School District Lawsuit

Azusa Unified Lawsuit: City States Its Case in Website FAQ

By Joe Taglieri The city of Azusa has issued a public response to a lawsuit filed by the Azusa Unified School District, which claims the city is neglecting to compel land developers to build a school in the Rosedale community.

The lawsuit aims to make developers construct a combined elementary and middle school on 9 acres in northeast Azusa.

The school district claims the landowners – initially Monrovia Nursery Co. and currently Rosedale Land Partners – are violating a 2004 agreement to construct the new school as families settle into the Rosedale community.

The development is slated to exceed 1,200 homes and generate an estimated $750 million in revenue from home sales, according to Azusa Unified's complaint document filed in August in Los Angeles Superior Court.

The suit also contends that the city must stop approving building and occupancy permits for the development, which reportedly is at 75 percent occupancy with 940 homes.

"The City is perplexed by the actions of the District in light of the fact that Rosedale Land Partners has assured the City that they have complied with all terms and conditions of the [2004] Agreement and that the student enrollments needed to trigger construction of a new school have not been met," according to an FAQ document posted on Azusa's website last week.

The "trigger" for requiring school construction to begin is 300 students from Rosedale enrolled in Azusa Unified.

The city further asserts: "The timing for construction of a new school is dependent upon the number of new students from the development being enrolled in District schools.

There is no legal mecha-

nism for the City to force Rosedale Land Partners to build a new K-8 school."

The city claims it could risk a breach-of-contract lawsuit if it impedes homebuilding based on the lack of school construction, while the district counters that developers cannot sue the city if the court orders it to stop issuing permits or compel Rosedale to build he school.

Because the designated school site is on an earthquake fault, the district alleges its agreement with Rosedale is no longer valid because the developers knowingly misled school officials. "[Developers] failed to disclose the fact that the land was unsuitable for construction of a school and failed to disclose that the land designated in the Development Agreement was located over an earthquake fault," the court document states.

The district also claims the developers are violating their agreement with the city.

"According to the City’s Rosedale CFD Bond Statement, the estimated cost to the Developers for the acquisition and construction of the District school was $51,050,000, with the Developers starting construction in November 2008, so the school could open by September 2009," the complaint states.

The document also notes the absence of a contract "specifying the timing of the design, construction, and delivery to the District of the K-8 School" between the developers and Azusa Unified, another alleged violation of the development agreement with the city.

One of the concluding points in the city's FAQ noted the fiscal impact of the lawsuit: "In addition to having to pay lawyers and court fees, the lawsuit is preventing the City from refinancing existing bonds which would save residents living

in Rosedale over one million dollars and provide additional funds that the City will use to make improvements to the Great Park and other recreational amenities in the Rosedale Community."

The district hopes the court will require Rosedale to either build the school on a suitable site or pay Azusa Unified more than $20 million, the estimated value of the school and land, documents show. The district also seeks interest, repayment of its court costs and financial damages, which the district is unable to accurately compute due to Rosedale's alleged unwillingness to provide accounting data, which include $11 million apiece in lost taxes and development fees.

"There’s absolutely no merit to allegations being made in [the lawsuit]," Bill Holman, a Rosedale Partners executive, told the San Gabriel Valley Tribune. "And at least on our behalf, we are in 100 percent compliance" with the agreement between the developer and Azusa Unified.

Holman said Rosedale was open to discussion on the level of enrollment generated from Rosedale students.

"The sense of entitlement and arrogance [the developers] have demonstrated in the way they’ve handled this agreement is very disrespectful to the Azusa community," the school district's lawyer Terry Tao said in a statement.

“A lawsuit was the last step we wanted to take, but after many attempts to resolve this issue, we have to do what’s best for our students,” Azusa Unified Superintendent Linda Kaminski said in a statement. “We are still hopeful that Rosedale will work with us and fulfill their promises to our community so that we can avoid court altogether.”

A hearing is scheduled in March in which the court will consider the city's motion to dismiss.

Stanford Faces Iowa at the Rose Bowl Jan. 1

By Gus Herrera On Jan. 1st, Stanford and University of Iowa will do battle for the very first time in the 102nd chapter of Pasadena’s winter classic, the Rose Bowl Game.

Look for these two squads to take out the frustration of their playoff shortcomings on each other. With championship implications absent from this year’s showdown, we get to enjoy the Rose Bowl for what it has traditionally been: a heavyweight showdown between the Pac-12 and the Big 10; a slugfest between the west

coast and the breadbasket of America.

Stanford comes into the New Year’s Day matchup with an overall record of 11 wins and two losses.

Although their season began with a shocking 16-6 loss at Northwestern on Sept.

5, the Cardinals quickly responded with an eight-game win streak. This streak ended on Nov. 14 with a two-point loss (3836) in a nail-biter to conference rivals Oregon in Palo Alto, CA. Once again, Coach David Shaw’s men rose to the challenge, beating California, Notre Dame, and USC (for a second time) to cap off the regular season with the Pac-12 title.

Stanford is led by three of college football’s best playmakers. On defense, standout senior linebacker Blake Martinez led the team with just over 100 tackles, more than double than that

of the team’s second leading tackler.

On offense, sophomore running back Christian McCaffrey and senior quarterback Kevin Hogan lead a dynamic unit that can put up points with the best of them. Second in this year’s Heisman vote, son of former NFL wide receiver Duke McCaffrey, Christian McCaffrey is arguably the most explosive player in college football. Hogan threw for over 2,600 yards, completing 68 percent of his passes with a strong touchdown to interception ratio of 24 to seven. A familiar face to college football fans, Hogan has been at the helm since 2012, but the time is now for him cement his legacy in Stanford history as more than just the guy who followed Andrew Luck.

The Iowa Hawkeyes come in as 6.5-point underdogs, according to most Las Vegas sports books, with a record of 12 wins and only one loss, which came in the Big 10 Championship thriller on Dec. 5 against the Michigan State Spartans. Undefeated in conference play and three points

from a playoff berth, at first glance it may seem as though Iowa should come in as the favorite to win the ball game, but upon further review of their schedule, the odds maker’s rationale is revealed. Five out of their eight conference games were decided by fewer than 10 points. Not to mention Michigan, Michigan State, and Ohio State were absent from their regular season schedule. Ironically, the Hawkeyes did lay down the hammer on Northwestern 40-10 in Evanston, Ill. back on Oct. 17.

Iowa draws their strength from a well-balanced defensive unit that saw five players record 50 tackles or more on the season. Junior cornerback Desmond King leads a solid secondary unit, using his ball-hawking skills to notch a team-best eight interceptions. He has been awarded this year’s Jim Thorpe Award for the nation’s best defensive back. The Hawkeyes rank 10th in rushing yards allowed for the season, according to NCAA.com, so

the boys in black and gold stand as a formidable force against number five in cardinal and white, Christian McCaffrey.

On the offensive side of the ball junior quarterback CJ Beathard comes into the game with respectable statistics on the season. He threw for over 2,500 yards, completing 61.4 percent of his passes with a touchdown to interception ratio of 15 to four. But the real fireworks come from the three-headed monster Iowa deploys at the running back position. Although no individual back eclipsed 1,000 yards rushing on the season, senior Jordan Canzeri, junior LeShun Daniel Jr., and sophomore Akrum Wadley each rushed for an impressive number of touchdowns: 12, 8, and 7, respectively.

This Iowa squad may not be flashy, but they are hungry and ready to make good on their opportunity to bring postseason glory to a program that has not been to the Rose Bowl since 1991.

Arcadia's Mayor Calls AHS Girls Tennis Team 'Phenomenal'

By Jonathan Tsou During the previous city council meeting, Arcadia’s Mayor Gary Kovacic honored the Arcadia High School girls’ tennis team on winning their first CIF Southern Section Division 2 Championship and an undefeated season with a record of 22 wins and no losses. The city council meeting was live-streamed onto the Arcadia city’s website.

After defeating Sage Hill High School from Newport Beach, the Apaches faced Murrieta Valley in the CIF Championship game.

The Apaches started off to a strong start, winning the first six sets. They would later clinch the victory when Michelle Deng defeated Elise Seyarto of Sage Hill High School.

After winning CIF, team captain Angelica Zhou said that, “it felt great.” She also mentioned that her freshman year, the team and she were unable to win CIF, despite making it to the CIF Championship.

first Arcadia High School tennis team, boys or girls, to win the CIF Championships, clinching their spot in the CIF Southern Regional Quarterfinals. They would fall short against fifth-seeded Corona del Mar High School, but not before they earned an outstanding victory against fourth-seed Palisades High School.

In a statement, Arcadia Mayor Gary Kovacic said that the, “success of the team is phenomenal and is the result of extraordinary talent, teamwork, and lots of practice. The coaches,

teammates, parents, fans, and, of course, the players themselves helped them reach this level.” Mayor Kovacic, who played for Arcadia High School’s boys’ tennis team in the ‘60s said that his experience playing sports, “was an important part of [his] high school education.” He continued to say that sports are, “very important in developing a well-rounded student.

[Tennis] helps develop discipline, time-management, teamwork, and other important life skills that will be helpful in the student’s future.”
