Jayden Lau, 4th grade, wrote Jack McEwan a letter stating he would walk to Washington D.C. to meet the WWII veteran.

Sex Offenders Challenge California Dept. of Justice Demand Improvements to, or Termination of Megan’s Law Website California Reform Sex Offender Laws (CA RSOL) and two sex offenders (“registrants”) filed a lawsuit in Los Angeles Superior Court on Nov. 10 requesting immediate changes to, or in the alternative, the termination of, the state’s Megan’s Law website. The request is based upon the failure of the California Department of Justice (CA DOJ) to comply with a state law requiring the agency to add conviction and release dates to individ-

uals’ profiles on that website by 2010. “The California Department of Justice continues to act illegally and in violation of state law,” stated CA RSOL president and attorney Janice Bellucci. “The agency has failed to meet a legislative mandate to correct the Megan’s Law website and that failure has resulted in several deaths as well as homelessness and unemployment for thousands of California residents.”

Roy Matagora, a plaintiff in the case, is one person who has suffered and continues to suffer due to the agency’s failure to comply with state law. Matagora is a recent victim of vigilante violence who was shot twice on Sept. 21 by a neighbor who told police that he shot Matagora because he is a “sex offender.” The Megan’s Law website profile of Matagora lacks both the date of SEE PG.16

On Wednesday, hundreds of thousands of veterans were honored at ceremonies around the United States. Observances, both large and small, recognized the vital role these men and women play in keeping our nation and world safe. The “Greatest Generation” - those who served during WWII - is at a crossroads in their lives. Many have passed on but some remain strong, even at 95 years old, like a former Arcadia dentist, Dr. Jack McEwan. McEwan is a distinguished B17 bomber pilot who flew scores of missions in the South Pacific during WWII. On Tuesday Jack McEwan visited the children at Baldwin Stocker Elementary School in Arcadia to discuss his illustrious career and service during one of the longest wars in world history. Prior to his brief talk, McEwan was overcome with emotion as students read Joanna Fuchs’ poem, entitled

Burbank, Glendale, Pasadena Alert Public to Utility Scam The Cities of Burbank, Glendale, and Pasadena are joining forces to inform the public about an ongoing utility scam that has claimed victims in all three cities. In a recent two week period, Burbank Water and Power logged more than 40 incidents in which customers reported receiving illicit phone calls from people posing as utility employees. The scammers attempt to convince their victim that their power is about to be turned off unless they make an immediate payment of

hundreds, and sometimes thousands of dollars. It’s a scam that has affected utility customers in Pasadena and Glendale as well. Since utilities are ubiquitous, the scam can occur in virtually any community in Southern California. In addition to targeting residential customers, scammers frequently target businesses during peak operating hours. The caller will often use “spoofing technology” to make the caller ID appear as if it’s coming from the utility’s phone number. The caller

usually instructs the victim to go to a store and purchase a pre-paid debit card. Once the card is loaded with funds, the victim will call the scammer and share the pre-paid card information. It’s important for utility customers to know that the utility company does not accept payment in this manner and will never call and threaten to immediately shut down power. Service disconnection only occurs after a lengthy process. When an account is SEE PG.3
