Former Keppel High School Basketball Coach Charged with Sexually Abusing Student A 56-year-old man was charged with sexually abusing a female high school student over seven months, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office announced. Joseph Alan Kikuchi (dob 7/1/59) of Monterey Park has been charged with 19 felonies and five misdemeanors in case GA097357: 13 counts of sexual penetration by foreign object, five counts of lewd act upon a child,

five counts of child molestation and one count of oral copulation of a person under 16. The defendant is scheduled to be arraigned Friday in Department 5 of the Los Angeles County Superior Court, Alhambra Branch. Prosecutors will ask bail be set at $1.47 million. Deputy District Attorney Rena Durrant, who is assigned to the case, said at the time of the alleged crime, Kikuchi was

the girls’ varsity basketball coach at Mark Keppel High School in Alhambra. In July, details of an alleged inappropriate relationship between Kikuchi and a female student began circulating through the school, according to the prosecutor. The Tournament of Roses Thursday named Erika Karen Winter as the 98th Rose Queen in an official ceremony at the Pasadena Convention Center. The announcement concludes a month-long process that began with more than 900 Pasadena-area young women who participated in the Royal Court tryouts. The ceremony was emceed by KTLA Rose Parade® host and television personality, Stephanie Edwards, who will conclude her 35-year run as co-host for the KTLA Rose Parade broadcast with the 127th Rose Parade presented by Honda, themed “Find Your Adventure.” Rose Queen Erika and the Royal Court will make as many as 100 community and media appearances, culminating with the 127th Rose Parade and 102nd Rose Bowl Game. “Leading up to America’s New Year Celebration®, Rose Queen Erika Karen Winter and the six Rose Princesses will serve as ambassadors for the Tournament of Roses and the City of Pasadena,” said Tournament of Roses PresSEE PG.5

Gang Member Convicted of Killing Man in Alhambra Home A 28-year-old gang member was convicted of fatally shooting a man in his Alhambra garage in 2013, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office announced. The jury deliberated for a day before finding Xia Lin of San Gabriel guilty of first-degree murder in case GA091066. Jurors also found true gun and gang allegations. Deputy District Attorney David Ayvazian of the Hardcore Gang Division said in the evening of Sept. 22, 2013, Lin dressed himself in a hoodie sweatshirt and ski mask and walked up to the Alhambra home of Qui Jin Fang, a Chinese restaurant owner. While Fang was sitting in his car located in the garage, Lin shot the victim several times with a .22 caliber gun with a silencer, the prosecutor said. Fang,

43, died at the scene. One of Fang’s neighbors witnessed Lin leaving the victim’s home and called police, who later discovered the body, the prosecutor added. When police arrived at the home and began investigating the homicide, another witness told authorities that prior to the shooting he saw a man dropped off in the area in a white Mercedes, the prosecutor said.
