Judson International School: Leaders in Today’s World

On a beautiful 17-acre campus in northern Pasadena lies Judson International School, a ministry of Frontier Ventures, formerly known as the U.S. Center for World Mission. The school was established in 1991 as the William Carey Academy, for children of staff families.

In 2001, it became Judson when it began accepting students from local and international communities. It is currently celebrating its 25th year of service.

According to Kim Aasland, Director of Admissions, Judson International is a K-12th grade Christian school where subjects are taught from a biblical worldview, but without emphasis on doctrine or dogma. Ms. Aasland added, “It has a unique history-based curriculum that integrates all subjects to enhance learning. Our students use an investigative learning approach to explore and discover the world, including

hands-on activities, curriculum-related field trips, research and real books.”

In 2008, the school began offering a satellite program for home schooled students. It also has the Eagle Academy, a one-day per week program with enrichment classes for home-schooled students in K-8th grade.

A distinctly international institution, Judson has a culturally diverse faculty – many of their teaching staff have lived overseas – and student body – 75 percent of its students are Americans while 25 percent represent over 20 countries. The school intentionally limits its English learners to 15 percent of its student population to help them become proficient quickly. It is ap-

proved to offer the I-20 form to international students, with a program that has significantly grown since 2008

when it first became available.

Judson High School, which was added in 2012, adheres to high academic

standards. It has a curriculum that meets the requirements for graduation and for admission to the UC

es in Art, English, Math, Science, and History.

The school’s creative arts program is flourishing with a Creative Arts Night and Poetry Out Loud in the fall, and an all-school musical in the spring. Other activities offered are ASB, journalism, performing arts and a 1:1 Chromebook program.

Afterschool enrichment programs include the Art and Theatre Club.

The school’s athletic department fields 13 sports teams and is a member of the CIF and Sports League.

the PSAT. Additionally, 10th through 12th graders attend one to two college fairs offered at PUSD and Christian College. Faculty members also take these students to at least one college tour per year.

Last year two seniors graduated from Judson High School and were accepted to Azusa Pacific, Biola, Chapman, Loyola Marymount and Pasadena City College.

This school year will be the first official graduating class from Judson International; all graduating seniors are planning on going to college.

According to its website, Judson’s mission is to partner with parents in educating children who will grow in knowledge, understanding and wisdom to become leaders in God’s Kingdom and today’s world.

Given the current state of global affairs, it seems the world needs more institutions like Judson International School.

Arcadia High School: National Scholars

he city of Arcadia in the western San Gabriel Valley is well-known for its excellent school district. Arcadia High School (AHS) has consistently won accolades for its academic prowess and its students are known to do exceedingly well in national standardized exams. Newsweek’s America’s Top High Schools recently named it one of the most elite in the country and U.S. News and World Report has awarded it the Gold Medal thrice.

It would come as no surprise that several academic teams - the Constitution, Mathematics, Physics, Mock Trial, Speech and Debate Teams - and competitions - the Academic Decathlon, Destination Imagination, National Ocean Sciences Bowl, National Science Bowl, Physics Bowl, Quiz Bowl, Science Olympiad, Solar Cup - all call Arcadia High School home. About 250 students compete on eight state and national award-winning academic teams. Some of the most popular colleges and universities among the 2015 seniors were: Cal Poly Pomona: 120 accepted, 21 attended; Cal Poly San Luis Obispo: 95 accepted, 36 attended; Cal State LA: 118 accepted, 29 attended; Citrus College: 35 attended; PCC: 189 attended; UC Berkeley: 44 accepted, 26 attended; UC Riverside 231 accepted, 46 attended; UC Santa Barbara: 114 accepted, 22 attended; UC Irvine: 117 accepted, 22 attended, and USC: 44 accepted, 22 attended.

As its university matriculation clearly shows, Arcadia High School has consistently produced outstanding graduates the city is surely proud of.

Mayfield Senior School: Fully Engaged, Striving for Excellence

ayfield Senior School in Pasadena was established in 1931 by the Society of the Holy Child Jesus as an independent Catholic college preparatory school for young women in grades 9-12. It is located in a quiet residential area of mature trees and serene surroundings. The central building itself was a former home that has been transformed into what is now Strub Hall. It houses stateof-the-art classrooms and computer labs, visual arts studios, and common meeting spaces.

According to Lisa Dulyea, Director of Communications, Mayfield has a total enrollment of 330, an average class size of 16, and a student/teacher ratio of 12/1. Each student is guaranteed individualized attention from a very highly qualified 39-member faculty that holds a total of 25 advanced degrees, including one J.D. and four Ph.Ds. Thirty-eight percent of Mayfield educators have ten years of teaching experience; while anoth-

er 38 percent have 20 years of teaching experience.

Known for its vigorous academic program, Mayfield offers 21 AP and Honors courses in English, Math, Science, History and Language.

It also has a Conservatory for the Arts, a distinct and demanding Fine Arts program where students discover their passion for and develop their skills for the Arts. It is a UC-accredited curriculum course in nine disciplines: creative writing, dance, film and media, instrumental music, photography, technical theatre, theatre, visual arts, and vocal music. Completion of a course earns students both a credit and a grade.

Athletics are a big component of a Mayfield education, Ms. Dulyea says. The school fields 23 competitive teams in 12 sports – badminton, basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, softball, swimming and diving, tennis, track and field, volleyball and water polo. Students also vie in equestrian competitions off-campus under the Mayfield banner. May-

field is a member of the Prep League, a division of the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF), and is also affiliated with the Interscholastic Equestrian League and the Saddleseat and Western School League.

Students hone their leadership skills by taking part in the Student Council, Campus Ministry, Student Advising Council, Student Athletic Leadership, Diversity Committee, and Honor Council. There are also several other interest clubs, activities and service projects they can choose to join.

Pasadena High School:

Pathway to College and Career

O

ne of four comprehensive high schools in the Pasadena Unified School District (PUSD), Pasadena High School (PHS) has seen a remarkable transformation during the past five years under the leadership of principal, Gilbert Barraza. US News & World Report gave PHS the Silver Award in 2015, putting it in the top 20 percent of high schools in the country.

A particular source of pride for Dr. Barraza was being instrumental in rebuilding PHS’s A-G program. He expanded the school’s AP offerings from nine AP classes in 2011 to the current 21 AP courses in English, Math, History, Science and World Languages.

PHS also has several courses unique to the district. The APP Academy is an innovative four-year program where students learn computer science through mobile, web, and game development. Students in the academy go on field trips; get internships; receive individual college and career counseling; and study in a high-tech 21st century learning environment. It is

a rigorous 9th to 12th grade curriculum that meets the A-G requirements of the UC and Cal State schools. It is one of the ten College and Career Pathways in PUSD. Another four-year program offered at PHS is the Creative Arts, Media and Design (CAMAD). This Pathway combines academic courses and visual arts and design projects that give students real-world skills and hands-on experience to pursue an art or design career, or to attend college.

Students work in an innovative $250K print shop to create artworks for public display and to learn Adobe Creative Suite software, including Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Dreamweaver, Flash and Bridge.

A very interesting PHS program is the Law and Public Service (LPS) Pathway – a four-year college preparatory course designed for students who are interested in pursuing legal, government or protective service careers. Its curriculum integrates the traditionally isolated fields of law and law enforcement, social justice, and academic and career technical education. On October

14, the school inaugurated its Court Room, which is an exact replica of the real one, complete with jury box. It also kicked off the LA County Teen Court Program under the guidance of Superior Court Judge Lu. An ethnically diverse school, PHS’s student body is 54 percent Latino/Hispanic, 21 percent white, 18 percent African-American, three percent Filipino, and

three percent Asian. It has an enrollment of 1,900, a certificated staff of 83 teachers, five counselors, four administrators, one nurse and one librarian.

According to Dr. Barraza, PHS has earned $20 M in scholarships and grants over the past two years.

In 2014, the high school had one National Merit Scholarship winner. During the 2014-2015 school

year, PHS produced one National Merit finalist, six Commended National Merit students, three National AP scholars, 13 AP scholars with Distinction, 12 AP Scholars with Honors and 58 AP scholars.

Forty-one percent of PHS’s 2015 graduates went to four year colleges; 52 percent went on to twoyear community colleges; six percent to trade/voca-

tional schools; three percent to the military; and ten percent gained employment. Recent graduates attended 84 colleges and universities including some of the most selective institutions in the country including Brown, Caltech, Columbia, Cornell, Dartmouth, Harvard, MIT, University of California campuses, University of Pennsylvania, USC, and Yale.

City College (PCC) will offer a college-level Anatomy class. Attending and passing this course give students the same credit as if they passed an AP Bio course.

As part of its college and career readiness initiative, SMUSD started an expansive Regional Occupational Program (ROP) in business. Students learn the realities of the field

– starting a business, running and managing one in the real world. The district also recently created a new position for a dedicated career and college counselor to seek various partnerships with organizations throughout L.A. County.

As successful as they are, San Marino Unified School District and San Marino High School do not rest on their laurels.

Dr. Cherniss asserted, “Because we are a small district we are able to offer the best for our students.

We don’t worry about our ranking, we look at our programs and the ranking will take care of itself.

We will continue to offer the most innovative, rigorous programs in the state of California. And we will continue to reinvent ourselves.”

San Marino High School: Gold Medal

ear after year US News & World Report’s Best High Schools gives San Marino High School (SMHS) the Gold Medal Award. It is ranked #52 in California, making it one of the very best in terms of academic achievement. It has a college readiness index of 61.3, well above state average.

Based on the Academic Performance Index (API) Survey, SMHS scored 932 points out of a possible 1,000 points. Great Schools rated SMHS 10 out of 10 as it has consistently topped all performance indices. It is also a California Distinguished School, a National Blue Ribbon School, and Bravo Award School.

Located in a predominantly affluent residential area in the western San Gabriel Valley, SMHS

has a total enrollment of 1,165 students, 53 percent of whom are male and 47 percent female. Sixty-nine percent of its students are classified as minorities, with three percent economically disadvantaged.

SMHS has a rigorous curriculum, with an impressive number of Advanced Placement courses in Math, Science, English, History/Social Science, Foreign Language and Art/ Music Theory. Its students are involved in a vast array of extra-curricular activities including the school newspaper, the Titan Shield; the yearbook, Titanian; Speech and Debate; Robotics; Marching Band; Chamber Choir; orchestra; fashion merchandising; media arts; and drama; among others.

With nine college counselors providing its 12th graders guidance for

college applications, it has the lowest student/counselor ratio in all the public schools in L.A. County.

Ninety seven percent of SMHS graduates attend college – with 84 percent going to four-year university and 13 percent attending a two-year college.

Dr. Alex Cherniss, Superintendent of the San Marino Unified School District (SMUSD), this year initiated a groundbreaking partnership with The Huntington, for a UCapproved Honors Humanities course. This is taught by a SMHS teacher, and once a week students take a class with the Library’s curator, with the rest of the class being taught online.

This format gives students a blended learning course, which simulates the delivery of courses in college.

Clairbourn School Encourages Student Entrepreneurship

hildren have minds like sponges – they want to try new things, and they like to construct contraptions. At Clairbourn, a junior pre-K to 8th grade school in San Gabriel, educators build on their students’ natural talents and show them how to apply these to real-world circumstances.

One of the lessons Clairbourn teachers impart is that of entrepreneurship, which is actualized during Market Day. According to teacher Kimberlee Maltbie, it “… gives students a real life situation where we discuss supply, demand, opportunity, cost, and other economic principles businesses face daily. Our students are immersed in these from the first day they walk into our classrooms. The students must apply for jobs, some of which require letters of recommendation from previous teachers, and from which they earn a weekly salary.

They have to pay rent and taxes for their desks, but can save and budget to buy classroom privileges.”

nomic principles led to the creation of Market Day,” continued Ms. Maltbie. “Preparation for it takes about four weeks and includes creating a business plan for what they intend to create based on available classroom supplies, their particular interests or skills, and a $10 limit on capital resources. They then spend eight work periods to get their enterprise running.”

On Market Day parents come in to view and purchase the children’s products for sale, while marveling at their kids’ ingenuity.

The 3rd graders, meantime, learn about supply, demand, scarcity, resources, income, taxes, expenses, and profit.

But more than economic principles, they acquire invaluable life lessons – how to work together as a team and how to deal with customers.

One student said, “Market Day was so busy; I had people bargaining with me, so I had to think about what was a fair price for my product.” Another 3rd grader exclaimed, “I had trouble keeping track of inventory and helping customers at the same time!” During class,

another student shared his experience, “In the last few minutes of Market Day, I had to lower the price to raise the demand.”

This kind of engagement among young children inspired Clairbourn Family Association officers Barbara Shattuck (2014-2015 CFA president) and Carina Walker (2015-2016 CFA president) last year to create a “Makers” Fair. They set up a Market during the school’s Fall Social, typically held during the first day of the Book Fair, a historically well-attended event. Students paid a $20 rental fee for a booth – comprised of one six-foot table, two chairs, and a canopy.

Participating students submitted a worksheet they filled out with the list of items they were selling that day (arts and crafts, baked good, inventions, etc.), their retail price, the cost and time to make the product, the potential revenue, the quantity they expected to sell, and their total profit. It all looked like a proper small business, complete with a cost and profit analysis for each vendor.

Sandy Myers, a Clairbourn parent who is in charge of this year’s Market Place, says she’s hoping to replicate last year’s smashing success. Her 13-yeardold son, Nicholas, had a booth selling 3D printed luggage ID tags on a carabiner at $7 apiece. He had several pre-made tags but he also offered personalized ones created on site (he estimated that each would take about eight minutes to make) and tags were likewise available on order.

Nicholas realized that even the best laid plans could go awry, however, when wi-fi problems caused his production to run over schedule and exceed the time he had built into his cost analysis. But luck proved to be on his side – the Huntingtower 7th graders (a program started in 2000 where Clairbourn exchanged

students with an Australian school counterpart) were at the Fair and saw the luggage tags. Huntingtower’s entire 7th grade class ordered personalized luggage tags made in the color of their “house” to identify their duffel bags.

Seventh grader Nicholas Myers made about $1,000 on his first business venture.

Of last year’s success, he enthused: “It felt good making kids smile by providing a product that I enjoy making on my 3D printer.” He is in 8th grade this year and is in the midst of high school applications.

Sixth-grader Chase and seventh-grader Justin, Carina Walker’s sons, rented a booth last year and sold marshmallow guns built using PVC pipes and connectors purchased from OSH duct-taped and adorned in different colors. They offered these in

small, medium, and large sizes and set their selling price based on the cost of the PVC, duct tape, marshmallows, and their time. At the end of the afternoon they made a $200 profit.

Chase said of his involvement last year, “I enjoyed the experience of sitting at a booth, and people coming over to buy stuff that I made.” He is looking forward to launching an Apple Cake booth in this year’s Market Place. He estimates he can make a $130 profit for every ten whole cakes he sells. He has already put much thought into his cake display, and how to entice customers to his booth – by giving out free samples.

Smart businessman.

It certainly looks like Clairbourn School is a greenhouse for the budding entrepreneurs of tomorrow!
