Duarte Council Approves Route for 'Car-Free' Street Event
The extended drought, excessive heat of this summer with very little relief, and inevitable wildfires have drained California’s natural resources … and now, scientists are warning us that El Niño is inevitable. Be well advised, we had better get out our best Mary Poppins’ brolly in preparation for the coming season. Rainfall opportunities this week across the Southwest may be the beginning of more substantial drought relief heading into the winter as an El Niño-fueled weather pattern takes shape in the region. Impacts from the rainfall
middle to late week across the Southwest will generally be hit-or-miss drought relief opportunities; the best chances will perhaps hold off until this weekend. Benefits from the rainfall should largely outweigh the threat for localized flooding, especially across the more mountainous terrain of the region. Azusa Unified to Host 2015 College Night Oct. 27
BY JOE TAGLIERI The Duarte City Council on Tuesday approved a tentative route for an upcoming regional event promoting the onset of the Los Angeles Metropolitan Transportation Authority's Gold Line commuter train. Scheduled for June 26, Metro-sponsored Golden Streets will require street closures on Highland Avenue at Duarte Road, Central Avenue, Crestfield Drive and Huntington Drive. In addition to com-
memorating the commencement of Gold Line service, Golden Streets seeks to encourage a "carfree" lifestyle centered around public transit and alternative means of transportation such as bicycles. The "open-street" event will close roads to cars, allowing pedestrians, skaters and cyclists free reign on thoroughfares usually dominated by automobile traffic. SEE PG. 16
