The seven members of the 2016 Tournament of Roses Royal Court were announced Monday at Tournament House. Selected from a group of 39 finalists, the Royal Court will attend nearly 100 community and media functions, acting as ambassadors of the Tournament and the Pasadena community at large. Their reign will culminate with the 127th Rose Parade® and the 102nd Rose Bowl Game®

FBI Seeks Missing Children, Lost at LAX

The FBI asks the public’s help to locate Bellevue, WA siblings Sage Cook, 15, and Isaac Cook, 9.

Sage and Isaac were last seen on Friday, Aug. 28, 2015 at the Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) in Los Angeles, California. The mixed race Asian-Caucasian siblings may be in the company of their Asian-descent, American citizen mother, Faye Ku, 41, and their toddler half-brother, Zephyr Ku. The FBI is particularly asking the public in California and Washington to keep an eye out for the boys.

Sage and Isaac spend most of the year in Bellevue, Washington, where they live with their father, who has primary custody. Investigators believe Ku may have forged a “supervised visit” court order, leading the children’s father to send them to California for a brief visit.

There is a Washington state felony warrant for custodial interference issued for Faye. The victim’s father has had full custody of the children since 2014, and— before that—shared custody since his divorce with Ku in 2009. Investigators found that Ku left behind personal belongings at her California

residence that would have helped law enforcement track her whereabouts. In a letter left at the residence, Ku blamed the children’s father of trying to control them and asked them to leave the children alone.

In 2013, Ku attempted to leave the country with Sage and Isaac. They were detained by a local law enforcement agency before they were able to board a flight to Taiwan. Ku was arrested and charged with Custodial Interference.

A jury found a 40-yearold man guilty of fatally strangling his 66-year-old live-in boyfriend, whose body parts were found in Griffith Park three years ago, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s office announced. The jury of eight women and four men deliberated about one and a half days before finding Gabriel Campos Martinez guilty of the first-degree murder of Hervey Coronado Medellin.

Medellin was killed on or about Dec. 27, 2011. On Jan. 17, 2012, the victim’s head was discovered by two women in Griffith Park near the Hollywood sign. Other body parts that were later identified as Medellin were discovered in the area dur-

ing a subsequent search.

Medellin, a retired airline ticketing agent, died as a result of asphyxiation, prosecutors said. In early March 2014, Campos-Martinez was arrested in San Antonio, Texas. He was later extradited back to Los Angeles to stand trial. Deputy District Attorney Bobby Grace of the Major Crimes Division prosecuted the case. Campos-Martinez faces 25 years to life in state prison when he returns to court on Nov. 16 for sentencing in case BA422242 before Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Katherine Mader. The case was investigated by the Los Angeles Police Department Robbery-Homicide Division.

New Sustainable Landscape Garden Will Help Duarte Lead the Way in Water Conservation The Upper San Gabriel Valley Municipal Water District and the City of Duarte are pleased to announce the completion of a new water-wise, landscape demonstration garden located on the corner of Buena Vista Street and Village Road on the City of Hope campus. A ribbon cutting ceremony with be held for the Duarte community on Thursday, Oct. 8 at 6 p.m. Following the ribbon cutting ceremony, guests will be able to tour the garden area and enjoy light refreshments. Free parking is available in the lot adjacent to the project site and guests are

encouraged to wear comfortable shoes.

The garden is part of Upper District’s Sustainable Landscape Demonstration Program, a community-based conservation program that provides grant funding to cities as a means to convert high-water use landscapes to low-impact, drought tolerant gardens. For this project, Upper District was pleased to partner with the local water retailer, California American Water, who provided additional grant funding for the project. Additionally, the project was supported through

the partnership of City of Hope, where the garden is located, and Burrtec Services.

“With California experiencing a severe drought, we wanted to select a site that would provide optimum visibility to the community and we are very pleased with the location and community partners that stepped up to the table,” said Director Bryan Urias, representing Division 5 of Upper District’s service area. “This location will provide community members with a great example of sustainable landscaping; drawing further attention and

interest to water efficient gardening practices.”

Now completed, the sustainable landscape demonstration garden in Duarte will significantly reduce the site’s existing water footprint through the installation of high-efficiency irrigation systems, low-water-use plants, and on-site stormwater retention and capture. The approximately 2,000 square foot demonstration project was constructed by EcoTech Services, Inc. and showcases a variety of California native

plants, including sage, toyon, yucca and other colorful plants.

“Now that the garden is complete, our Duarte residents and the many visitors coming to City of Hope will see how beautiful and efficient these sustainable landscapes can be,” stated Duarte Mayor Tzeitel Paras Caracci.

Outdoor landscaping accounts for the highest percentage of regional water usage and grass turf is one of the most commonly used, water-thirsty plants. Thus, it

is also one of the most promising targets for future water savings.

Upper District encourages residents and businesses throughout the San Gabriel Valley to consider using sustainable landscaping on their own properties as a means to significantly reduce their overall water use. Whittier Woman Sentenced to Nearly 6 Years in Prison

Duped 400 Homeowners of Nearly $4 Million With False Promises of Eliminating Mortgages A Whittier woman was sentenced to nearly six years in prison for her lead role in a scheme that falsely promised to eliminate mortgage debts for approximately 400 distressed homeowners who each paid a $15,000 fee, totaling nearly $4 million in victim payments. Instead of working on behalf of the homeowners, the woman simply sent worthless “Sovereign Citizen” paperwork to lenders—paperwork that did nothing to affect the mortgage of a single homeowner.

Maria Marcela Gonzalez, 45, was sentenced by Judge Stephen V. Wilson in United States District Court in Los Angeles, for two counts of making a false bankruptcy declaration. In rejecting her request for a probationary

sentence and imposing the 70-month sentence, Judge Wilson said that the defendant’s actions were “callous and in gross disregard of the law.”

Gonzalez, who pled guilty in July of this year, started the Crown Point Education Inc. scheme in early 2010 and operated from offices in Montebello. She admitted in her plea agreement that she spoke at seminars to recruit distressed homeowners and salespersons in the Crown Point program and ran the day-to-day operations of the scheme. Many of the victims were primarily or exclusively Spanish speakers.

In her plea agreement, Gonzalez admitted that she and others promised distressed homeowners at these seminars that, in exchange

for fees that were generally $15,000 per property, Crown Point would eliminate the homeowners’ mortgages within six to eight months through a secret process that involved sending packets of documents to lenders. Even though she told victims that she could eliminate their mortgage woes, Gonzalez admitted in her plea agreement that the process had never been successful. Gonzalez failed to tell distressed homeowners that earlier Crown Point clients had lost their houses to foreclosure and been evicted from their houses.

In the plea agreement, Gonzalez admitted that she worked with co-schemer Jude Lopez, who was also convicted and sentenced to a probationary term, and Ernesto Diaz, who was charged but failed to appear and is currently a fugitive. Lopez admitted in his plea agreement that he filed bankruptcy documents in the names of Crown Point clients to delay foreclosure and eviction. Diaz admitted in his plea agreement that Crown Point filed many bankruptcy documents without the knowledge of the company’s clients and that signatures of debtors and notaries were forged on many documents filed with the bankruptcy court.

The claims made to distressed homeowners were based on discredited Sovereign Citizen claims that mortgages are invalid because the banks did not actually lend the money used to fund mortgages, and the notes were securitized.

The case against Gonzalez, Diaz, and Lopez was conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

That’s Gross Please tell me the heat wave is over. I'm so tired of being hot. I guess there is an upside to it, though. Since the drought has caused us to ration our lawn watering, I can stand naked in the middle of my driveway, catch my sweat in a bucket then water my plants. Now that's Gross -- both the thought and the mental image.

The heat has just sapped my energy and I'm getting behind in everything. When

I used to complain that I couldn't get all my chores done, my father-in-law would always remind me, "That's all right, Dorothy; you don't want to finish your chores.

When they are done, so are you."

He finished his chores in 1978. I miss him still and think of him often. We would sometimes laugh together at things not everyone found laughable.

I received a photocopy

today of a cartoon I know would have evoked a chuckle from him. It shows a harried, frazzled-looking woman with crossed eyes and turned down mouth. The side caption reads, "God put me on Earth to accomplish a certain number of things ... right now I'm so far behind I will never die."

Gorden Wagener’s Visit Creates Inspiration for Inner City Youth A new generation of engineers was inspired by a visit from Mercedes Benz vice president of design Daimler AG, Gorden Wagener. He flew across the Atlantic Ocean from Germany to his visit Woodcraft Rangers’ NVISION after-school program at Gage Middle School in Huntington Park. A brief presentation of his career path and his current job responsibilities wowed the students. He followed with a Q&A session, addressing questions from technology advancement to future car designs from the students.

Visitors included the Laureus USA Foundation and Up2Us Sports accompanied with a team from Mercedes USA. The partnership between Woodcraft Rangers and their supporters affect the students positively, opening their eyes to opportunities as they advance in their education.

Upon entering the school campus, the skateboarding club had designed a custom skateboard that was presented to Gorden Wagener. Following the meet and greet, Gordon proceeded to the class-

room where he gave his presentation to a group of students. The students became involved, actively asking questions as they grew interested in Gorden’s presentation.

After the presentation, Gorden and the Mercedes team members took a tour around the campus observing the various clubs offered—volleyball, cheer and drill, soccer and skateboarding. Everyone joined the fun as Mercedes team members joined the skateboarding club to ride the skateboards. The vice president, Gorden, also jumped in on the fun as he rode up and down the blacktop on a skateboard with the students.

Recognizing the need for STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) education, Woodcraft Rangers and its partners help attract students towards those fields by infusing STEM in all their activities. The visit and presentation from Gorden sparked an interest in these young engineers to pursue prominent careers.

Gorden Wagener is the vice-president of design for the worldwide operating design unit of Daimler AG based in Germany. After studying industrial design at the University of Essen in Germany, he focused his studies in transportation design at The Royal College of Art in London.

Woodcraft Rangers is a provider of expanded learning with enrichment programs in after-school and summer learning designed for youth. Assembly Majority Leader Chris Holden’s bill (AB 1097) to allow for electronic contracts that will provide more consumer

protections over paper contracts has been signed into law by Governor Brown.

AB 1097 would allow alarm companies in the

state to fully utilize electronic contracts, at the discretion of the customer.

“With the evolution of the digital age, technology has advanced to such a degree that electronic contracts can now offer consumer protection measures that exceed those of traditional paper contracts,” said Assemblymember Holden.

“With paper contracts, it is virtually impossible to know who signed a contract, when they signed and whether or not copies of the contract and notice of cancellation were actually delivered.”

The adoption of electronic contracts provides greater transparency and gives the state additional enforcement tools to ensure that the sale was a voluntary transaction with the fulfillment of all notice requirements.

AB 1097 will go into effect Jan. 1, 2016.

Daring Rescue of Dog Nets PETA Award for First Responders PETA's Compassionate Action Award and Compassionate Police Department Award are on their way, respectively, to the Altadena Mountain Rescue Team and the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department–Altadena Station after they rushed to the aid of a dog named Angel, who plummeted 600 feet down a cliff while on an unleashed run with his guardian. After two hours of searching, first responders found the frightened, stranded dog, and were able to whisk him to safety with the help of a specially-made harness. Angel sustained only a minor scratch on his nose and was reunited with his guardian.

"Thanks to the persistence of these courageous first responders, this dog is safe and recovering at home," says PETA Senior Director Colleen O'Brien.

"PETA hopes their determination will inspire others to come to the aid of animals in need."

PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that "animals are not ours to abuse in any way"—reminds all dog guardians to keep their animal companions near them on walks with a leash and a comfortable, secure harness and to keep a close eye on them when they are outside.

PETA has also sent a letter asking the forest supervisor of the Angeles National

Forest to place signs along Sam Merrill Trail warning hikers to keep dogs leashed at all times and to look for symptoms of heatstroke. In just the past week, two dogs collapsed and needed resuscitation. So many dogs have fallen or collapsed from heat exhaustion in recent months that first responders now carry leashes with them.

PETA has offered to help create and install the signs.

The Altadena Mountain Rescue Team and the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department–Altadena Station will each receive a framed certificate and a box of delicious vegan cookies.

Taking action to improve gender wage equality and boost worker protections, Governor Edmund G. Brown Jr. Tuesday joined dozens of state and local leaders, women and girls at the Rosie the Riveter National Historical Park to sign SB 358 by Senator Hannah-Beth Jackson (DSanta Barbara), the bipartisan California Fair Pay Act. “Sixty-six years after passage of the California Equal Pay Act, many women still earn less money than men doing the same or similar work,” said Gov. Brown.

“This bill is another step toward closing the persistent wage gap between men and women.”

The equal pay legislation, among the strongest in the nation, received broad support from both Republicans and Democrats in the Legislature.

“Today is a momentous

day for California, and it is long overdue. Equal pay isn’t just the right thing for women, it’s the right thing for our economy and for California,” said Senator Jackson, chair of the California Legislative Women’s Caucus. “Families rely on women’s income more than ever before. Because of the wage gap, our state and families are missing out on $33.6 billion dollars

On Friday, Oct. 2, Arcadia Police received a call of a missing person. Julielena Bocanegra was last seen at the Arcadia Methodist Hospital on Oct. 2. Julielena was waiting to be treated for jaw pain but left the hospital prior to being seen by a physician. Julielena has been diagnosed with bi-polar disorder and schizophrenia, but does not take medication. Julielena is 23 years old, 5’1”, 100 pounds, and has brown hair and brown eyes. She was

last seen wearing a black jacket, black skirt, and carrying a black backpack.

Few individuals have the breadth of political, economic and military leadership experience as former Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak. Ehud Barak has served Israel as prime minister, chief of general staff of the Israeli Defense Forces, foreign minister and most recently as minister of defense—a position he took on in 2007 and retired from in 2012.

During his tenure as Israel's tenth prime minister, Barak led the country out of a prolonged recession and into an economic boom, with 5.9 percent annual growth, record foreign investments, near zero inflation, a halved deficit and significantly decreased external debt. Barak played a pivotal role in various Middle Eastern peace efforts. Foreign Policy magazine named him 13th among its 100 Global Thinkers. The core of the prime minister’s efforts was devoted to the peace process. In 2000, he ordered the withdrawal of the Israeli Defense Forces from South Lebanon, ending 18 tragic and bloody years of Israel’s presence there.

Animal Advocates Kick Off ‘Adopt a Shelter Dog’ Month With Protest at Downey Shelter Department of Animal Care and Control Continues to Deny Culpability Animal advocates protest inhumane treatment of animals at Los Angeles County shelters while the Department of Animal Care and Control continue to deny culpability in their latest report.

More than 60 animal advocates and members of the public gathered in peaceful protest at Downey Animal Care Center during National “Adopt a Shelter Dog” Month, on Saturday, Oct. 3, 2015. Their message was firm: “Mistreatment no more! We want reform!”

Demanding that the LA County Department of Animal Care and Control cleans up its act, the protesters took to the streets adorned with mops, brooms, pooper scoopers and cleaning products to drive the point home. Before and After photos of dogs rescued from shelters showing their remarkable transformation while signage included statements such as “End the suffering,” “Stop the neglect and wrongful killings.”

There was even a dog with a sign which read “Treat us better”!

Several Downey shelter survivors also attended the protest with their proud owners, including: Yanni, who is now a therapy cat, and Jelly Bean, a Chihuahua mix that was whisked away from a feces-filled kennel by Laura Jones, co-founder of All About The Animals, back in August.

Notably absent in the lineup of LA County shelter survivors was Baca, a two-year-old Australian Shepherd mix who tragically died on Sept. 19, 2015, after Carson shelter staff failed to treat him. This is despite rescuer Krista Place alerting Animal Control Officers twice within

the space of one and a half hours of the need for him to receive emergency medical treatment. Baca had been throwing himself against the kennel walls and panting heavily.

“Hearing the news of Baca’s death broke me.

He didn’t have to die,” said Place, who found out from Lisa Eldridge, Animal Care Center Manager for Carson.

Meanwhile, on the same day as the protest, the Department of Animal Care and Control (the Department) published a report (http://file.lacounty.gov/ dacc/cms1_234841.pdf) in response to the survey of rescue groups conducted by All About the Animals which elicited 111 complaints, and which was presented to Supervisor Knabe’s office around a month ago.

The report from Marcia Mayeda, Director of the Department, claims that the survey was “statistically insignificant.”

“Marcia Mayeda's response is typical of her defensive and deflective response to criticism which entails making excuses rather than taking responsibility and accountability and striving to make improvements within the shelter network,” said Jones.

“It also fails to address, for example, the documented photographic evidence of a blind dog drinking out of a bowl filled with urine, and an owned dog (that was wrongfully killed despite his owners trying to reclaim him) whose bowl contains feces instead of water.”

Mayeda also disputes All About the Animals’ claims of rescue groups fearing retaliation from her Department as a result of whistleblowing. In her report, Jones cited an

example of a civil law suit brought

by Cathy Nguyen against the Department in 2007 for breaches of California animal welfare laws. Nguyen had her adoption rights rescinded by Mayeda in December 2007, who claims in her report that this was not retaliatory. This is in contrast to the opinion of an LA County Superior Court judge, who ruled in March 2008 that Nguyen had strong probability of success in a Section 1983 claim (http://www.nokilladvocacycenter. org/wp-content/ uploads/2015/04/Section1983-to-the-Rescue.pdf ) due to an attempted violation of her First Amendment rights to speak out about perceived abuses of animals and violations of law. The Court also held that the rescuer had dem-

onstrated the likelihood that her suspension was retaliatory by showing both that the suspension came soon after her public comments and threats of litigation, and that the County failed to reveal any basis for it. The Court stipulated

that the County restore Nguyen’s access to the shelter.

Supervisor Knabe’s Office are now reviewing the complaints made via the All About the Animals survey in more depth, having been apprised by Jones of the nu-

Handel’s ‘Foundling Hospital’ Concert at LCPC Oct. 18 A concert that George Frideric Handel presented nearly three centuries ago to inspire Britons to support a hospital devoted to orphaned children will be recreated on Sunday, Oct. 18, at 2 p.m. at La Canada Presbyterian Church.

“Handel and the Foundling Hospital” will feature the LCPC Chancel Choir and Orchestra, directed by Jack Lantz, and soloists Lori Stinson and Victoria Aldridge (soprano), Diane Wallace (contralto), Matthew Thomas (tenor) and Gregory Geiger (bass).

The concert was pre-

sented in the chapel of the newly constructed Foundling Hospital in London on May 27, 1749. Handel sought to bring attention to the plight of babies left to die by the hundreds on the streets of the city. He composed a 30-minute piece of music based on the Psalms and other biblical passages that emphasized care for the poor and needy.

But he didn’t stop there. The famed composer also included in the concert his recently written “Music for the Royal Fireworks,” today one of his most popular works.

The concert premiere will be recreated “using the original vocal and instrumental forces,” Lantz promised. “Fans of Handel’s music will enjoy a surprise that he included in the ‘Foundling Hospital Anthem.’”

Funds raised at the concert will support Discover the World, which provides care to children in Kenya orphaned by HIV/AIDS. Tickets are $20. They may be purchased at the church office or at the door. La Canada Presbyterian Church is located at 626 Foothill Blvd.

Book Review: ‘Around the World in 80 Years’ by Jack Nedell

Author Chronicles Long Life Spent Traversing the Globe

By Courtney Blackburn Not to be confused with Around the World in 80 Years: The Oldest Man to Sail Alone Around the World - Twice! or several other ‘Around the World in 80 Years’ books, this selfpublished effort by former Proctor & Gamble executive and global traveler Jack Nedell aims to showcase his long life spent “travelling, living, and working globally.”

The book’s cover has some good design ideas— i.e., photos of different world locations inside the title font—but the execution could have benefitted from a professional graphic designer’s touch.

With a title inspired by Jules Verne’s classic adventure Around the World in 80 Days—which, apparently, is often used when involving travel and seniors—Nedell’s Around the World in 80 Years attempts to stand out by viewing these experiences through a business lens.

Though it is apparent that this is indeed a selfpublished—and seemingly, self-edited—book, it is of

much higher quality than some homemade efforts.

The writing is chronological and cogent, as befits a man of business. Though not the most entertaining of yarns for the casual reader, for any business historian or researcher interested in the foreign workings of Proctor & Gamble, this is a first-hand goldmine of information and detail, with resultant opinion and analysis. The last 60 pages of this book, after the author’s retirement, do seem to devolve into vacation photos, which may not be of interest to anyone outside the immediate circle of family and friends.

Overall, Around the World in 80 Years is an earnest and decent attempt to make a record of one man’s extensive work, life, and travel that will be cherished by the author’s children and grandchildren for

generations.

Just when you thought it would be safe to back out into the streets after the long and very hot summer, the “Occasional” Pasadena Doo Dah Parade rolls up to celebrate 38 years of impudent cavorting on the streets of east Pasadena.

Going back in time, when the revelry was held in old Pasadena around Thanksgiving, the 2015 Spectacle takes place on Sunday, Nov. 22, commencing around 11 a.m., or whenever Snotty Scotty and his Hankies get out of church.

On Doo Dah day, “the street will swell with a memorable cast of local eccentrics, disruptors, pundits, the 2015 Queen, and legendary Doo Dah house band, Snotty Scotty & the Hankies. Secret Santa, Doo Dah's take on the North Pole icon, will close the parade and ring in the holiday season; all this and so much more without harming a single rose,” so says Patty Hurley, Doo Dah’s Delightful Directress of Silliness.

The last, albeit wonderfully blatant dig at the parade’s big sister, The TOR [which also apparently holds a parade this time of year], is of course, somewhat sinister but nonetheless worthy of considerable note.

There are indeed, no dead flowers in the Doo Dah parade; no white-suits and it doesn’t cost 90 bucks to watch the show. Oh yes, and one more thing - The fun starts at a civilized time (late morning and on a Sunday…which of course would never happen in the Rose Parade world.)

There is no Rose Queen or Court here at the Doo

Dah Ranch, but there will be a Doo Dah Queen (or perhaps King, who knows) who will don the coveted, beer-crusted thorny crown this year. Who it will be is anyone’s guess … but rest assured that “person of interest” will be selected by a distinguished [some say extinguished] panel of beer sluggin’ judges at the annual Doo Dah Tryouts traditionally held at the American Legion Post 280. The date of this exceptional r i t e - o f - Pa s a d e n a passage has just been announced, so stay tuned to Beacon Media for the latest and often very late, updates. The date is Oct. 18: 179 Vinedo St., in Pasadena. This is NOT to be missed.

Pasadena’s Doo Dah parade began as a grassroots event in 1978 to gain national attention for its eccentric and, often, irreverent satire. The parade which has spawned numerous off-beat replicates across the country and was named by readers digest as "America's best parade," and was recently featured in the book 50 places you must visit before you die. Tower Garden Brings Science Lessons to Life El Monte Celebrates the at Mountain View School District Schools Exchange at Gateway With Ribbon Cutting, Street Dedication

Students at La Primaria and Twin Lakes Schools are excited about growing fruits and vegetables thanks to the Tower Garden, a stateof-the-art vertical aeroponic gardening system. Teachers are incorporating the Tower Garden into the curriculum, engaging students and bringing lesson plans to life.

Through the Tower Garden, students witness first-hand how plants grow, as well as the importance of sustainability and healthy eating.

The Tower Garden was developed at Epcot through a joint partnership between Disney and NASA. It is a soilless vertical garden that stands about four feet tall. It has a fountain of water at its

core and every 15 minutes, it delivers water to plants kept in little pots all around the cylinder.

At La Primaria School, third grade teacher, Janette Salce, used the Tower Garden in the classroom not only to promote good nutrition but to help create an active learning environment.

“With the Tower Garden I incorporated science lessons, explaining what an acid and base is. We used a test kit and measured pH levels in water, balanced the acid levels and learned why it is important to maintain toxic-free water so our seeds would grow into healthy edible plants,” said Salce.

“Lessons came alive in the classroom with the Tower Garden. From the time we planted each little seed, watched them sprout, then grow into the tower.

Next came math, rich vocabulary, writing, speaking and listening skills. With this in mind, we have chosen to replace the District Spelling Bee with the EMCSD District Speech Competition.

We are moving beyond a competition that focuses solely on a relatively narrow skill set to one that involves thinking deeply, solving realworld problems and collaborating with peers. These are

the tools our children need to compete in today’s technological and informationrich environment. We want to reward and encourage the development of skills that universities and employers will expect our students to have.

L.A. Sheriff Search and Rescue Prepares for Swift Water Rescues During Rainy El Niño The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s eight searchand-rescue (SAR) teams are training and planning for the anticipated El Nino storms predicted for L.A. County. Last weekend, 36 SAR specialists trained for swift-water rescue response. The focus was land-based operations which primarily deal with how to rescue a victim safe-

ly out of a fast flowing river or channel without having to enter the water. Upcoming future training will certify these SAR team members as Swift-water Rescue Technicians. Many current SAR team members already possess this certification, which deals with how to rescue a person trapped in a river or channel by entering the water and making

contact with them. Swiftwater rescue responses are the highest level of risk to the public safety agencies who respond. One-third of all swift-water deaths are rescuers who attempt to save someone from a river or channel.

The eight SAR teams consist of team members who live in the immediate area and they will be pre-identifying likely areas prone to flooding. They will coordinate with our public safety partner agencies who are stakeholders in

flood responses. Once identified, the teams will preplan rescue sites for those areas including the identification of possible hazards.

SAR teams work closely with LASD’s Special Enforcement Bureau Emergency Services Detail (SEB/ESD), a highly trained and multi-mission bureau which staffs Air Rescue 5, the premier helicopter rescue platform. SEB/ESD deputies operate 24-hours a day, seven days a week.

Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department

Search and Rescue Team members are Reserve Sheriff’s deputies who volunteer their time to help others for $1 a year, and who partner with sheriff’s civilian volunteers who volunteer for free. There are 200 members of the eight Search and Rescue teams of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. They are all Emergency Medical Technicians and certified mountaineers. These rescuers were activated for 597 search and rescue missions last year, making

Funding Sought For Unincorporated Area Patrols The Los Angeles Board of Supervisors unanimously approved funding for an additional 67 patrol deputies for unincorporated areas in next year’s budget. “Today’s action continues the enhancements in public safety to the residents in our unincorporated communities,” said Antonovich.

The sheriff’s department’s assessment of patrol services conducted in April of last year recommended adding 123 patrol deputies to enhance service levels in the county’s unincorporated areas in two phases. Phase one consisted of adding 56 deputies and phase two consists of

adding 67 deputies. Mayor Antonovich’s motion to implement phase one was unanimously approved in December. The motion directs the interim chief executive officer to set aside the necessary funding for an additional 67 patrol deputies for unincorporated areas in next year’s budget.

Interstate 5 Freeway Closures in October

On Saturday, Oct. 17, 2015, about 2 a.m., CALTRANS will begin placing KRails in the southbound lanes of the Interstate 5 Freeway south of Atlantic Boulevard, thus reducing traffic to the left two lanes. This will result in a full closure from 2 a.m. until 6 a.m. The southbound left two lanes will remain open until 11 p.m. At that time, both directions of traffic will be shutdown to pour new concrete. Southbound will be shutdown at Slauson Avenue.

Northbound will be shutdown at Paramount Boulevard. Northbound traffic is expected to open all lanes by 5 a.m. and the southbound lanes by 9 a.m.

The reason for the closure was a fire from a transient camp under the Interstate 5 bridge over the Rio Hondo riverbed in Downey on July 7, 2015.

Numerous agencies are working together to minimize the impact on the surrounding areas. These agencies include CAL-TRANS, California Highway Patrol, Downey Police Department, Downey Public Works, Los Angeles County Department of Public Works Transportation, City of Commerce Public Works, and the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. The traffic in this area is expected to be very congested during this time. It is strongly suggested that you avoid this area and take alternate routes.

ARCADIA September 28 At about 1:11 a.m., an officer responded to Extended Stay America, 401 East Santa Clara Street, regarding a vandalism report. The officer determined unknown suspect(s) shattered the front glass door. No suspects were seen and no witnesses were located.

At approximately 4:02 p.m., an officer responded to a residence in the 000 block of Genoa Street regarding a package theft report. Surveillance footage revealed an unidentified male suspect stole the victim’s package from his porch. The investigation is ongoing.

September 29

Around 10:38 a.m., an officer responded to the 1100 block of South Baldwin Avenue regarding a grand theft report. The officer discovered an unknown suspect broke into the electrical panel and stole all of the breakers. The total loss was estimated at over $7,000. No suspects were seen and no witnesses were located.

Just after 9:47 p.m., an officer conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle in the 000 block of West Huntington Drive for having expired registration. Upon contacting the driver, the officer detected a strong odor of marijuana emitting from the vehicle. A search of the vehicle revealed a small bag of marijuana. A records check of the passenger revealed the 17-year-old female had been reported missing out of Altadena. She was reunited with her father.

The driver, an 18-year-old male from Pasadena, was cited and released in the field.

Shortly after 3:52 a.m., an officer conducted a records check on a vehicle in the area of Santa Anita Avenue and Duarte Road, and discovered the vehicle had been reported stolen. The officer attempted to conduct a traffic stop however the vehicle fled. After a short pursuit, the vehicle stopped and all three occupants were detained. The driver, a 26-year-old female from Apple Valley, was arrested and transported to the Arcadia City Jail for booking. The two passengers were released without incident.

Around 11 a.m., an officer responded to Arcadia High School, 180 Campus Drive, regarding a student in possession of marijuana. The officer determined the 15-year-old male from Arcadia was in possession of marijuana and a smoking pipe. He was cited and released to his mother.

October 1

At approximately 8:26 a.m., an officer conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle in the area of Huntington Drive and Sunset Boulevard for making an illegal U-turn. Upon contacting the driver, the officer discovered the 51-year-old male from Rosemead was driving with a suspended license. He was cited and released in the field. The vehicle was impounded for 30 days.

Around 12:39 p.m., an officer responded to the Arcadia Police Department front counter regarding a theft report. The reporting party stated he was the general contractor for a residence that is under construction and noticed the security system was stolen sometime during the month of July. Monrovia Police Department recently arrested a 36-year-old male from Mon-

rovia who was in possession of the stolen security equipment. The property was returned to the victim.

October 2:

At approximately 8:23 p.m., an officer conducted a records check on a vehicle in the area of Baldwin Avenue and Huntington Drive and discovered the vehicle displayed a fraudulent registration sticker. The driver, a 54-yearold female from Arcadia, stated she knowingly placed the forged sticker on her vehicle.

The suspect was arrested and transported to the Arcadia City Jail for booking.

Just after 9:40 p.m., an officer responded to the 200 block of East Huntington Drive regarding a robbery report. An investigation revealed two unknown suspects attempted to rob three female victims of their purses. A struggle ensued but the victims were able to maintain control of their items. The suspects fled in a four-door sedan. The investigation is ongoing.

Just before 7:11 p.m., an officer conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle near the intersection of Clark Avenue and Peck Road for having expired registration. Upon contacting the driver, the officer discovered the 34-year-old male from El Monte was driving with an expired license. He was cited and released in the field. His vehicle was left legally parked.

The suspect’s vehicle was located and officers discovered a device that appeared to be a credit card skimmer and garage door descrambler.

At about 7: 59 p.m., Pasadena Police officers responded to the area of Lake Avenue and Union Street regarding a traffic collision. On arrival, officers determined to people on a motorcycle were in critical condition suffering from major trauma.

Officers notified the paramedics who transported the victims to a local hospital.

Because of the nature of the collision and the related injuries, the police departments’ Traffic Investigation Team responded. Based on preliminary information, the Traffic Team determined that the driver of the vehicle (27 year-old male) was making a west-bound turn from Lake Avenue on to Union Street when a motorcycle driving south on Lake Ave struck the car. The motorcycle was

being driven by a 24-yearold male with a 26-year-old female passenger. Sadly, the motorcycle operator and his passenger sustained fatal injuries in the collision. Anyone with information regarding the accident should call Pasadena Police Lieutenant Pete Hettema at (626) 744-4241.

October 1 Possession of a Controlled Substance/Possession of Drug Paraphernalia – Suspect Arrested. At 11:23 p.m., an officer detained a suspect in the 600 block of Shamrock for being in a park after closing hours. The investigation revealed the suspect was in possession of methamphetamine and a glass pipe used for smoking methamphetamine.

The suspect was arrested and taken into custody. He was later released on a citation.

October 2

Stolen Vehicle. At 3:51 a.m., dispatch received a report of a stolen vehicle from a victim in the 200 block of West Cherry. The victim parked her

vehicle in her driveway at 2 p.m. When she returned to her vehicle at 3:50 a.m., she discovered it missing. The vehicle is a 2000, red, four-door, Honda Civic. The investigation is continuing.

Residential Burglary. At 7:39 p.m., officers responded to the 200 block of May Avenue regarding an alarm activation at a home. The residents left the home at 5:30 p.m.

Officers determined forced entry was made through the kitchen side door, but nothing was found missing from inside the residence. Neighbors were contacted, but no one witnessed or heard anything unusual. The investigation is continuing.

Residential Burglary. At 9:45 p.m., officers were dispatched to a residence in the 900 block of Ridgeside Drive regarding a burglary. The resident left the home at 11 a.m.

When she returned home at 8:30 p.m., she found her bedroom and bathroom had been ransacked. It appears forced entry was made through the kitchen side door. Nothing was found to be missing from the residence. The investigation is continuing.

OpenTech L.A.

Regional Apprenticeship Collaborative Program (OpenTech L.A.) is a soon-to-be training system that will provide underrepresented populations with career opportunities in fields related to Information Technology and Biotechnology. Its aim is to connect diverse people, who otherwise wouldn’t have the opportunity, with tech companies throughout California.

The program will revolutionize tech industry workforce development by implementing a system that tailors to the specific needs of each partnered tech company. Trainees will

be connected directly with companies through an apprenticeship to learn the skill set that is required by the matched company, ultimately shaping each individual into the perfect candidate for the company placed.

Spearheading the OpenTech L.A. operation is Managed Career Solutions (MCS), which was recently awarded with a $2.9 million grant over a five-year period as part of the U.S. Department of Labor’s American Apprenticeship Grant Initiative. The initiative, which is awarding $175 million to selective programs that induce

innovative career paths, has chosen MCS as one of only two grantees in Los Angeles.

“We are honored by this recognition of our efforts and are excited to continue our work developing nontraditional apprenticeships,” said Dr. Philip Starr, MCS Executive Director. “We look forward to continue working alongside partners, employers and other grantees to develop a national framework that will bring meaningful jobs and prosperity to our communities.”

Partners of MCS that have united to make OpenTech L.A. come to life are the LA County Workforce Investment Board, the City of LA Economic and Workforce Development Department, and LA Mayor’s Office of Economic and Workforce Development. The partnership that OpenTech L.A. is founded on is held together by the unified mission to create tech-related career paths for populations that have limited access to the fast-growing industry.

“Our purpose is to open doors for underrepresented groups such as women, veterans, at-risk youth, low-

income individuals, and all minorities,” said MCS Project Manager Alexis Altounian. “Our key service is job development through an arrangement of accelerated training, certification prep and examinations, job search and placement. We customize each program according to the specific needs of every individual and affiliated company.”

One of the unique aspects to the OpenTech L.A. program is its Talent Incubator. This feature offers hands-on experience through a network of enterprises that will combine education with a paycheck.

The Talent Incubator will benefit more than 1,000 job seekers along with 300 apprentices who complete the program.

Great Public Schools Initiative

By Jonathan Tsou This past June, the Los Angeles Times posted a 44page report that outlines a campaign to strategically place more than half of Los Angeles Unified School District’s students into charter schools in the next eight years. As of right now, Los Angeles Unified already has the largest charter school system in the country with 16 percent of all total student enrollments and 287 charter schools. Getting it to more than 50 percent would require approximately 260 more charter schools that will hold up to 130,000 students and cost over 490 million dollars.

For many years, charter schools have been an important topic for Los Angeles and many other school districts around the nation. There has also been an increase in the number of charter schools throughout the nation because of grants from the Obama administra-

tion and other organizations, such as the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and the Walton Family Foundation.

The report, created by the Broad Foundation, a foundation founded by billionaire Eli Broad, forms the Great Public School Now Initiative. The report indicates that the initiative is a bold, multi-year strategy to meet growing demands for high-quality charters in Los Angeles and ensure that every student can access an excellent public school.

The newly-created charter schools will serve students; particularly minority and low-income students.

The report also takes jabs at the constantly debated Common Core. It says that investing millions of dollars with little progress on student achievement will continue to make minorities suffer.

In March, Stanford University released a new study

that looked at the impact of charter schools in 41 urban areas. Using research designs that compared learning gains for students enrolled in charter schools to students enrolled in public schools in the same district, the findings show that students in charter schools learn significantly more than their peers attending traditional public schools.

Students in charter schools have around 40 more days for math and 28 more days for reading.

Even though creating more charter schools has its perks, it does not come without challenges.

Making 50 percent of all Los Angeles students attend charter schools will hurt the teachers who work for the Los Angeles Unified School District. Early in September, hundreds of teachers protested outside the Broad Museum against this increase.

On Thursday, Oct. 8, 2015, world renowned science teacher Paul Andersen will be visiting Arcadia’s Performing Arts Center to discuss the impact of technology on schools, and how students and parents can adapt to the changes. The event titled, “Why Schools Are Changing,” will take place from 6:30 to 8 p.m.

The event will involve a lecture, followed by a Q&A. The goal of this event is to help parents better understand technology-based education. Andersen’s lecture will give parents advice on how they can help their child be successful in this new educational environment. As Arcadia Unified School District Superintendent David Vannasdall explained, “We are in the middle of a global transformation in education due to the fact that we have quickly moved from an information society to an innovation so-

ciety. The ability to innovate and apply information to profoundly add value to our world is what we aspire for every student in Arcadia.

Paul Andersen will challenge us all on how teaching and learning may look for this innovation society.”

Andersen has taught in Montana for twenty years.

As we settle into cooler temperatures and look forward to fall holidays, so should your children be getting into the rhythm of school life and activities.

After they have put behind the excitement of the new school year, they should now concentrate on the job at hand.

Freshman: Encourage your children to keep their focus on their schoolwork.

By this time, they should have figured out what extracurricular activities they are interested in pursuing and what sports they want to participate in. Give them guidance as they navigate this new phase in their school life, and support the choices they make.

Sophomore: Depending on your c h i l d re n’ s c o u r s e choices and load, there could be standardized testing required of them. Your children should be taking AP and SAT II exams following completion of the course so they need to retain the knowledge they gained in class. The best preparation for both AP and SAT II exams is for your children to make sure they understand the subject matter and do well in all tests the teachers give in class. If there is something they didn’t understand, they should right away speak to the teacher to ask for clarification or, possibly, find a tutor for additional help. The results of these standardized exams are required for college applications.

Juniors: Your children should be aware that junior year is the last complete year of high school performance that college admissions officers will see. They have to put more effort at doing well and getting good marks.

They should register for and take the PSAT, which is also the qualifying exam for the National Merit Scholarship. It is also a good time for your children to meet with their school counselor to make sure they are taking all the courses they need to graduate and apply to college.

Your children should also be keeping up with their extra-curricular and sports activities. College admissions officers look at several components as they try to assemble an incoming

class made up of the best candidates to add to their student body.

Several area high schools hold College Fairs on campus. This is an excellent opportunity for you to see what the different colleges and universities are offering. Your children will get to meet and speak to admissions officers – they are usually the same people who will be reviewing your children’s application, reading your children’s essay, and sitting around the table, making their case for your children during the allimportant decision-making

rounds. They have a say on whether your children get accepted or denied admission to the school of their choice.

Seniors: Your children should now be in the process of completing the common application, and finalizing their essay topic or personal statement. They should have provided the teachers writing their letters of recommendation with stamped envelopes.

If your children are sending supplementary material (auditions or portfolios) with their application, they need to be getting these ready soon. Audition tapes for arts performances, for instance, can be uploaded on YouTube for easy access; some schools no longer accept CDs or DVDs. Your children should check the website of the college or university to which they are applying about supplemental material requirements.

Your children’s school counselors are also a great resource as they are always in contact with college admissions officers.

If your children’s high school offers interview advice and guidance, they should take advantage of it. Basic things like what clothes and shoes to wear in addition to how to answer questions all helps towards giving your children confidence. While this is not an expert advice, I am going to say that in most cases, interviewers are not as concerned about what answer they give, but how they an-

swer. Also, if your children are visiting a campus and an interview with an admissions officer is a requirement for application, they should take the opportunity to schedule the interview at that time. Admissions officers like to see demonstrated interest – a campus visit and interview will be remembered and noted.

Be on top of application deadlines; most schools offering Early Action or early Decision have to receive your children’s application in November.

You and your children should be researching scholarships. A website called Affordable Colleges Online is a good resource to look into (http://www. affordablecollegesonline. org/graduating-debt-free).

Other websites include: CollegeXpress ( w w w. c o l l e g express.com); Fastweb (www.fastweb.com); Free Application for Federal Student Aid (www.fafasa. ed.gov); National Merit Scholarship Corporation (www.nationalmerit.org); Scholarships.com (www. scholarships.com); Scholarships360 (www.scholaships360.org); Student Aid on the Web (www.studentaid.ed.gov). You should also attend the financial workshops being offered at your children’s high school.

Your responsibilities as parents are limited to offering encouragement, guidance, and moral support as your children go through this stressful time. But while you need to let your children manage this process, you should also express your concerns and expectations. Communicate with your child, school counselors, and teachers when you have questions.

Be there for your children but learn when to get out of their way. Never try to communicate with the college admission officers as it is the surest way to sabotage your children’s chances for admission. Do not be overzealous about getting your children accepted to their dream university; there is a school out there that’s the right place for them. While this may sound hollow now, the counselors at your children’s school and the admissions officers at the colleges or universities to which your children are applying are actually the experts at finding the best fits.

Governor Brown Signs Landmark Climate Legislation Moving boldly to combat climate change and curb toxic carbon pollution, Governor Edmund G. Brown Jr. today signed landmark legislation – SB 350 by Senate President pro Tempore Kevin de León (D-Los Angeles) – that establishes worldleading energy efficiency and renewable energy goals for California.

“California has taken groundbreaking steps to increase the efficiency of our cars, buildings and appliances and provide ever more renewable energy,” said Governor Brown. “With SB 350, we deepen our commitment.”

Governor Brown signed the legislation from the East Terrace of the Griffith Observatory overlooking the City of Los Angeles and was joined by dozens of government, climate, business, environmental justice and community leaders.

SB 350 codifies goals Governor Brown laid out in his January 2015 inaugural address to double the rate of energy efficiency savings in California buildings and generate half of the state’s electricity from renewable sources by 2030.

Today, California is laying the groundwork for a healthier and sustainable future for all of our families,” said Senate President pro Tempore De León. “We are showing the world through innovation how we can transition and increase access to renewable energy while cleaning up the air we breathe, especially in our most polluted communities.”

The legislation is an important step in the state's landmark plan to cut climate-warming pollution. It also establishes state policy to promote transportation electrification to meet the state's climate and clean air goals.

In addition to action on the Under 2 MOU, in recent months the Governor has traveled to the United Nations in New York, the Vatican in Italy and the Climate Summit of the Americas in Toronto, Canada to call on others leaders to join California in the fight against climate change.

These efforts build on a number of other international climate change agreements with leaders from Mexico, China, North America, Japan, Israel, Peru and Chile. Governor Brown also helped convene hundreds of world-renowned researchers and scientists to issue a groundbreaking call to action – called the consensus statement – which translates key scientific climate findings from disparate fields into one unified document.

The impacts of climate change are already being felt in California and will disproportionately impact the state's most vulnerable populations.

California Governor Jerry Brown kicked off Breast Cancer Awareness Month Thursday by urging residents to order the state’s new official Pink Ribbon License Plates.

“This year, for the first time, Californians may support the early detection of breast cancer through a specialty license plate, available at https://pinkplate. org,” Brown said in a letter marking the start of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Brown also planned to promote the plates on social media.

The new specialty license plates are the result of a years-long effort by a group of California breast cancer survivors who call themselves the “Survivor Sisters.” Brown signed AB 49, sponsored by then-Assemblymember Joan Buchanan, into law in September 2014.

At least 7,500 preorders are needed for the Department of Motor Vehicles to begin producing the plates. Orders can be

made at www.pinkplate.org.

Plates can be pre-ordered for a driver’s own vehicle or as a gift. A portion of the purchase is tax deductible.

Costs begin at as little as $50. Roughly 700 have been ordered.

Throughout October, community organizations and individuals throughout California will commemorate Breast Cancer Awareness Month through a variety of public education and awareness events. The governor is highlighting the Pink Ribbon License Plates, which are designed to deliver a message of “Early Detection Saves Lives” and to help fund breast cancer screenings for underserved women In 2015, it is expected that 25,260 women in California will be diagnosed with breast cancer and 4,240 will die of the disease.

Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women in all race/ethnic groups in California.

“Early detection of breast cancer improves the

chances of survival. In fact, when breast cancer is diagnosed early (at a localized stage), 99 percent of women survive for five years or more,” Brown wrote. “Breast cancer mortality in California has declined by 35 percent due to the combined effects of better treatment and earlier diagnosis, and access to breast cancer screening has been shown to save lives through early detection.”

Money generated from the California Pink Ribbon License Plate will allow more women across California to get regular breast exams and mammograms, potentially saving lives. The funds will be directed to the Breast Cancer Control Account, which funds the state’s Every Woman Counts program administered by the California Department of Health Care Services.

The program partners with county departments of public health and county health consortia across California to provide women with local, easy access to screenings.

4, 2015, from cancer at age 81.

She was proud of her heritage from a Spanish Basque father and a French mother. The family moved from Spain to Brea, California when Liz was two years old, and subsequently to Pomona, California. Liz graduated from Pomona High School and then attended the Orange County Hospital School of Nursing, becoming a registered nurse.

While volunteering at a Salesian Brothers camp to prepare it for summer, she met Hal Leaven, who was also volunteering. As he recounted the story, he wrangled an introduction from her brother and despite the geographic difficulties with the relationship (he was living in Orange County and she in Santa Monica) a romance blossomed. They were married on June 9th, 1960, at Saint Joseph’s church in Pomona. In 1961, they moved to Monrovia and settled.

Hal and Liz were blessed with three children, Mark, Suzy, and Maria. From the moment Mark was born, Liz became a “stay at home” mom. She was completely involved in her children’s school and sports activities.

Mark and Maria attended Immaculate Conception Parish School while Suzy attended special classes.

Liz was a room mother and Physical Education teacher at Immaculate Conception School for many years. As her daughter Maria recalled “She would cancel any other event in her life to go watch a track meet, a football game, a volleyball game, a swim meet, a basketball game, soccer, etc., if her family was involved.”

She was also a regular usher at the 5:30 Saturday evening Mass. Her other community activities included being a docent at the Monrovia Historic Preservation Group’s Mother’s Day Tour for over 20 years.

She was a regular member of the New Horizons Club at the Community Center. She was also a league bowler at Columbia Bowl in Duarte for years and continued at Bowling Square in Arcadia.

The motto for the national credit union movement is “People Helping People,” but for now, a popular local credit union is modifying it to “People Helping Animals.” Member-owned, nonprofit financial cooperative Pasadena Federal Credit Union (PFCU) joined an exciting movement called “Share the Love” and they need support from the community! The Apaches Bully the Bulldogs STORY By Jonathan Tsou, PHOTOS BY TREVOR STAMP The Arcadia Apaches celebrated their homecoming game against the Pasadena Bulldogs last Friday, Oct. 2, 2015. This anticipated game kept the winner on a safe path to the playoffs. Both teams came off dominating performances shutting out their opponents. Both teams were on a two-game winning streak. Alumni from Arcadia's Class of 1965 were at the game to support the Apaches once more.

During the first quarter, Bradley Mills scored a touchdown with 3.8 seconds

left the quarter. #53, Steven Wilbur, then completed the 2-point conversion ending the first quarter 8 – 0 Apaches.

In the second quarter, Pasadena’s Jeremiah Jones (#5) scored Pasadena’s only touchdown of the game after a 17-yard run. Jones ended the first half 8-7 Apaches.

During halftime, the President of the Tournament of Rose Parade 2017 announced that Arcadia High School’s Marching Band and Color Guard was invited to perform in the Tournament of Roses on Jan. 2, 2017. This

will mark the band’s 16th appearance in this globally televised event. Seth Murphey, one of the Arcadia Marching Band's directors, believes they were invited back not only because his students are musicians, but academicians who are well- rounded. He said that the band will be preparing for the Rose Parade by doing a lot of field show competition and then go into full parade mode by marching every day on Campus Drive.

After the announcement, Arcadia High’s Associated Student Body (ASB)

announced the 2015 Arcadia Homecoming Princes, Princesses, King, and Queen. Each individual was accompanied by one of their closest family members. Congratulations to Eric Chen and Michelle Wan on becoming Arcadia’s 2015 Homecoming King and Queen!

As the third quarter began, the Bulldogs' Jeremiah Jones fumbled the ball after being tackled. Arcadia recovered the ball and started to steamroll to victory. Five seconds later, Arcadia’s quarterback, Nico Hiller, connected

with Raeshawn Roland for a 43-yard pass, putting Arcadia at the 12-yard line. Then Arcadia’s Jahlique Stephens (#22) scored a touchdown for Apaches—the first since the first quarter. In the next play, the Apaches intercepted the ball and ended up at the Bulldogs’ 21-yard line. Bradley Mills scored his second touchdown of the game with 6:13 left in the quarter. 14 seconds later, Pasadena’s Dajuan Brown (#75) snapped the ball over his quarterback’s head, causing a safety.

The third quarter ended on

a high note, Apaches leading 24-7.
