Saturday’s Rally in Pasadena Sends Strong Message BY TERRY MILLER

Approximately 1000 people attended a rally in defense of Planned Parenthood Saturday morning. The huge show of support on the steps of Pasadena City Hall was in direct reaction not only to the “doctored” fetus videos but also the massive Republican attempt to defund the education services the organization provides to women. – Photo by Terry Miller

Tracks of My Tears – Etched in Stone BY TERRY MILLER The Foothill Gold Line Monrovia Station was dedicated last weekend and a large memorial rock “Dedicated to the Journey” was unveiled to show off those who helped get the light rail to Monrovia. However, as one reader noted, there was one rather serious omission under the “Former Council Members” recognition. Robert Bartlett. Bartlett was first elected to the Monrovia City Council in 1974, and was elected mayor in 1988. He served as mayor for 13 years until 2001, as he opted to not run for re-election. Despite the blistering heat, approximately 1,000 people rallied Saturday morning on the steps of Pasadena City Hall to show community-wide support for the millions of people who benefit from the health care and education services provided by Planned Parenthood. The rally was held in response to not only the Republican Congress’ attempt to defund PP but also “the series of fraudulent videos recorded by an anti-abortion extremist group, biased investigations into Planned Parenthood and their practices, and anti-abortion protestors disrupting care at Planned Parenthood locations across the country.” Officials of Planned Parenthood say the videos released had been altered and severe-

ly edited in an attempt to discredit the group. Concerned that opponents of Planned Parenthood people had blended into the crowd with signs quoting the Bible, organizers called Pasadena police, who kept a watchful eye on the proceedings. Saturday’s large turnout included Mayor Terry Tornek who was quick to point out that he was there as a private individual supporting Planned Parenthood and not on behalf of city council. “It’s important for us to thank our community of supporters and show that we will not let these fraudulent attacks hinder access to care, no matter what,” said SEE PG. 9

The Monrovia Association of Fine Arts (MAFA) has been hard at work to coordinate the 52nd Annual “Celebrate the Arts” Show, and Monrovia’s first ever ChalkFest, which will take place on Sept. 26 and 27, 2015, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. each day in Library Park. Nearly 50 area fine artists and 10 chalk artists will display and demonstrate their mastery, and a dozen live musical and dance acts will perform in the afternoons. This year, the show will include many firsts, including the first ChalkFest for Monrovia, the first kids’

chalk activities and coloring contest, the first appearance by students from Mt. Sierra College (11 fine artists and 2 chalk artists), the first live glass blowing demonstration, and the first appearance by 18 artists new to MAFA. In addition, students from Monrovia High School and Canyon High School will be on hand to display and demonstrate their ceramics and urban art work. A Silent Auction has also been coordinated to feature the work of participating artists, with
