You had a job opening, searched for the right person, interviewed dozens of candidates and finally hired the right one. After all of your hard work the next step is orienting them, also known as on-boarding. An effective on-boarding program is more than a bunch of new hire paperwork. It strategically gets the new employee adjusted and up to speed. It happens over a period of months, not just the first few days. Before Day One: Effective on-boarding starts before the new hire walks in the door because it prepares them for arrival. Before their first day send a welcome letter, literature about the company and a video clip of the organization. A personal phone call from their supervisor is also a nice touch. First Few Days: Critical objectives are to acclimate the employee to the work environment and their colleagues. This includes communicating job responsibilities and helping them get to know coworkers. This makes the new hire feel part of the team. First Month: This is a perfect time for a one-onone check-in to ensure the new hire is comfortable,

happy and engaged. Find out what’s working well and what barriers they’re experiencing. Discuss their contributions and performance to ensure they’re on a good track. Three to Six Months: Hopefully, at this point the new hire is feeling comfortable about the work environment and their job responsibilities. And hopefully you’ve observed their contributions and performance. Have another check-in meeting to cover these items and to keep the momentum going. First Year: Celebrate the employee’s performance and contributions by acknowledging the good work they’ve done. Discuss goals moving forward. An effective on-boarding program that’s strategically implemented can result in employee retention, job satisfaction and high performance. Taking a long-term view of on-boarding will get you there. To the Editor: We were among the hundreds who thronged to the Gold Line dedication ceremonies on May 23. It was an exhilarating experience. Comprising the crowd were people of all generations and many ethnicities -- all eager to celebrate the upcoming light-rail transportation we so badly need. Many community, area, state, and national leaders were on hand to celebrate the early-completion, on-budget moment. I wish to commend the people who planned and arranged the event. Kudos! It must have been no small task to arrange for all the amenities. Numerous canopied venues were set up to offer appropriate informational handouts as well as those offering cups of fresh

fruits, donuts and cake. To walk within and around the enormous structures was an eye-catching, mind-boggling privilege. Hundreds of chairs were provided in a main building for our comfort while various dignitaries described the process of bringing the Gold Line projection to fruition— from concept to engineering to designing (including the gold and yellow California Poppy theme) to staffing. It was also gratifying to learn about the “green” technology used with ecological impacts in mind. All in all, a wonderful community experience. Thanks to all who contributed to the event. Sincerely, Fran Syverson SIERRA MADRE

Neighbors By Dorothy Denne We moved from the farm into town when I was seven. I wasn’t altogether happy with the move but we did have some great neighbors. George Stegner and his wife, Della, lived across the street from us. I thought they were special. They had a front porch with a swing where George sat a lot and kept an eye on things. He was sitting there the day I set our house on fire. I had ironed my hair ribbon before going to school and forgot to unplug the iron. It did not have a temperature regulator so it just kept getting hotter and set the ironing board cover aflame. Daddy had worked the night shift so he was sleeping upstairs. George saw the smoke. He knew our door would not be locked so he tore across the street and into the house hollering at the top of his lungs. He and Daddy grabbed the dish pan and a bucket and had the fire out in no time.

I was not allowed to iron my ribbons before school again. I learned to wet them and wrap them around a drinking glass, where they dried nearly wrinkle free. Next door to the Stegners lived two “old maid” sisters, Ida and Marie Brauning. Ida was a short, pudgy woman who wore heavy metal braces on her legs and a perpetual smile on her face. Marie was tall, straight, slender and as sober as Ida was smiley. I loved them both. Even better than sitting on the porch with George and Della was sitting in the kitchen with Ida and Marie. You see, they ran a business in their home. They made and sold candy. They worked long hours making batch upon batch of delicious chocolates of every sort, crispy peanut brittle, and beautiful pink and green afterdinner mints. I sat in the kitchen and munched on all of them.

Refreshments will be served.

Assistance League’s Puppet Show to Be Featured at Retired Teacher’s Meeting By FLORETTA LAUBER Please send your social announcements and invitations to socialwhirl@beaconmedianews.com

Pasadena Showcase House for the Arts Awards 67 Gifts & Grants Totaling $630,000 This year, PSHA awarded 67 gifts and grants totaling $630,000 to non-profit organizations, including the Los Angeles Philharmonic Association, for music education, school music programs, instruments, music therapy, and underwriting concerts. Among the 67 awards were Arcadia, Monrovia and Temple City High Schools as well as Arcadia’s Performing Arts Center and many Pasadena groups. “While it is a huge responsibility for the members of PSHA’s Gifts & Grants Committee to decide to which organizations to award funds, it is very rewarding to know that these organizations are doing their part to promote mu-

sic and the arts, especially with regard to children and young adults, and particularly to those in underserved areas of our local communities,” said Gifts & Grants Chair Eileen Reilly.

About 180 guests were in attendance at this year’s reception. They were treated to classical music performed by an ensemble from USC Thornton School of Music’s Cardinal Winds made up of Catherine Baker (flute), Zach Pulse (oboe), and Alex Garcia (bassoon). “It is an absolute privilege for us to play a small part in the work that these incredible organizations do in the community and it is profoundly motivating,” said Watkins. “Tomorrow, we will go back to work with their stories in mind, more determined than ever to be successful so that we can make even larger contributions in the future.”

The City of Arcadia Recreation and Community Services Department seeks resident input on park facilities and recreation programs. The City of Arcadia has retained integrated Consulting Group (ICG), a southern California planning and architecture firm, to help update the City’s 2007 Recreation and Park Master Plan. According to Sara Somogyl, Director of Recreation and Community Services, “changing

demographics, increased demand, new trends in recreation, the need to be more water and energy efficient, and prioritizati9on of future capital improvement projects” are the reasons the City of Arcadia is undertaking this new planning effort. Based on resident input tools the final master plan will determine short term and long term park development, space allocation for youth, adult and senior recreation programs,

and potential fees and funding strategies for maintaining and operating the city’s park and recreation system. Residents can check the master plan status and get information on workshops and meeting dates on the city’s web site at www. ci.arcadia.ca.us. Broadway at the Playhouse A San Gabriel Valley Treasure

Since 2004, the San Gabriel Valley Music Theater (sgvmusictheatre.org) has been delighting audiences of all ages with Broadway style entertainment, live and up close. Through the dedication of Leanne Dickson and her small cadre of loyal and hardworking Board, musical theater thrives. S GV M T has produced such block buster shows as Sound of Music (2005), Forever Plaid (2009, South Pacific (2009), Miss Saigon (2010), Flower Drum Song (2011), Guys and Dolls (2012) and lesser known but equally entertaining musicals as Nunsense (2013). On Saturday, May 16, 2015, the San Gabriel Valley Music Theatre, showed patrons once again why they are one of the most entertaining and diverse musical theatre troupes in Los Angeles. After a sublime dinner catered by Autunno in San Gabriel, the company wowed the audience with The Fabu-

lous 50’s, a cabaret starring Louise Marie Cornillez, Corinne Delgado, Tyler Ruebensaal, and Ken Reid White with a special song dedication by Ray Rochelle and musical directi on by Jon Howie.

11 Critical Home Inspection Traps to be Aware of Weeks Before Listing Your Home for Sale

According to industry experts, there are several physical problems that will come under scrutiny during inspection when your home is for sale. A new report has been prepared which identifies the eleven most common of these problems, and what you should know about them before you list your home for sale. Whether you own an old home or a brand new one, there are a number of things that can fall short of requirements during a home inspection. If not identified and dealt with,

any of these 11 items could cost you dearly in terms of repair. That’s why it’s critical that you read this report before you list your home. If you wait until the building inspector flags these issues for you, you will almost certainly experience costly delays in the close of your home sale or, worse, turn prospective buyers away altogether. In most cases, you can make a reasonable preinspection yourself if you know what you’re looking for, and knowing what you’re looking for can help you prevent little problems from growing into

costly and unmanageable ones. To help homesellers deal with this issue before their homes are listed, a free report entitled “11 Things You Need to Know to Pass Your Home Inspection” has been compiled which explains the issues involved. To order a FREE Special Report, call toll-free 1-888-300-4632 and enter 1003. You can call any time, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Get your free special report NOW to learn how to ensure a home inspection doesn’t cost you the sale of your home.

Racial Profiling Bill Makes It out of Assembly Appropriations Committee The deaths of unarmed black people and other people of color at the hands of police have broken hearts and sparked a national conversation about race and equality, according to activist group Asian Americans Advancing Justice in Los Angeles. On Monday, a bill addressing racial profiling moved forward through California’s legislative process. AB 953, authored by Assembly Member Shirley Weber (D-San Diego), seeks to improve relations and the trust level between police and communities while ensuring that all Californians are treated fairly by law enforcement officers. The bill mandates the collection of basic information about who the police stop, search, and frisk. To date, the state of California

does not collect, analyze or make available such information. “Many Californians have lived experiences with racial profiling and other forms of biased policing,” said Lee Winkelman, lead organizer for Reform California. “It’s time for us to do something about it. Racial and identity profiling has no place in California.” Layma Murtaza, policy advocate for Asian Americans Advancing Justice’s Sacramento chapter added, “To build police-community trust and ensure all Californians are treated with dignity and respect, we first need basic information about what the police are doing.” A similar bill by Weber, AB 619, did not pass in the Appropriations Committee. “Our communities have

been shaken by the recent deaths of unarmed black and brown men throughout the country,” said Samilah Hankins, director of legislative advocacy with Dignity and Power Now. “We are disappointed to see this use-of-force bill stalled, but will continue to move forward to affirm that we are all worthy of fair policing.” AB 953 will go to the assembly floor for a vote sometime next week. “Collecting data in and of itself will not fix issues with disparate policing, however, increased transparency and accountability will bring us one step closer,” said Rosa Cabrera Aqeel, legislative director with PICO California. “We hope assembly members keep that in mind as they vote on this bill next week.”

Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office Offers Help for Seniors in Preventing Scams By terry miller A recent event purporting to be part of Publishers Clearing House scammed a Temple City senior out of $2,000. The rouse is more common than you would think and seniors particularly are at risk. She was told that she needed to advance funds to a company in the Philippines to ensure that the money she had won - $500,000 – would be d e l i ve r e d . The caller, who was very convincing, said that the “prize patrol” was slated to arrive later in the week but she needed to advance $1,000 to make sure they delivered. This actually happened twice and the senior was scammed out of $2,000. We contacted the telephone number the victim gave us and discovered it was a location near Manila, Philippines. The person who answered the phone appeared shocked when we got through. After requesting information about the Publishers Clearing House the woman slammed the phone down and refused to answer repeated requests for interview. Sadly, this could have been avoided had the senior known that Publishers Clearing House never announces winners and would never request money. In fact,

PCH offers tips to seniors to avoid such con artists. Every other Friday, the experts who prosecute these devastating financial crimes will offer warnings about the latest ploys targeting consumers in Los Angeles County – with a special emphasis on safeguarding seniors. Educating seniors about financial fraud is one

of District Attorney Jackie Lacey's top priorities. In an effort to fulfill that goal and in anticipation of World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (June 15), The DA is dedicating our first #FraudFriday Alert to financial elder abuse. Visit their website at http://da.lacounty.gov/seniors for detailed information on more than a dozen different scams targeting people ages 65 and older. There you will find printerfriendly versions of these materials and a video message from District Attorney Lacey. #FraudFriday Alert: It may sound obvious but it still offers criminals

the most direct line to seniors: the telephone. That is how criminals are able to trick so many seniors into sending them money. In the “Grandma Scam,” con artists use information about the victim’s family members, gleaned from social media sites, to persuade them to send money supposedly to get a grandchild out of jail. TIPS: Be aware of common scams like this one. Telling others is the only way to stop it. Use caller ID or an answering machine to screen calls. Don't pick up the phone unless you - Courtesy Photo recognize the number. Check out the story before sending money. Call the grandchild or his/her parents. Establish a secret password with family members so that you are able to verify it is truly a family member calling. If you are concerned that a senior is being scammed, please contact your local law enforcement agency or the Los Angeles County Elder Abuse Hotline at 1-(877)-4-R-SENIORS (1(877)-477-3646). Follow @LADAOffice on Twitter for up-to-date news or tweet us with #FraudFriday to share experiences and tips to combat financial crimes.

Attorney General Supports Policy Outlined in Huff Body Camera Bill The policy spelled out in law enforcement body camera legislation has received support from California Attorney General Kamala Harris. The Attorney General was quoted in the Los Angeles Times on May 28 saying that law enforcement agencies should “use the discretion to figure out what technology they’re going to adopt based on the needs that they have and the resources that they have.” The bill, SB 175 authored by state Senate Minority Leader Bob Huff (R-San Dimas), will require each law enforcement department or agency that chooses to require officers to wear cameras to develop a policy relating to the use of the cameras. In addition, the bill requires the camera policy to be developed in collaboration with nonsupervisory officers and include the duration, time, and place when cameras shall be worn and operational. The bill further seeks to establish the length of time video collected by officers will be stored, the procedures for and limitations on public and officer access to recordings taken by BWCs. Huff’s legislation also mandates guidelines for officer training regarding body cameras. SB 175 recently passed

“Your Voice, Your Community”

out of the Senate with unanimous support and is awaiting committee hearings in the California State Assembly. “I’m pleased that AG Harris sees the value of the legislative policy I’m promoting with SB 175,” Huff said. “She appears to agree that it’s important that any policies set on the state level remain flexible so that local agencies can develop procedures that line up with community needs and agency resources.” According to the Police Executive Research Forum of 2014, “Law enforcement agencies that require officers to use body cameras, report that the technology definitely improves community relationships by improving the performance of officers as well as the conduct of the community members who

are recorded.” Proponents of SB 175 claim it demonstrates an even-handed approach to a serious public safety issue by keeping the discussion focused on the public safety and privacy rights of all citizens as well as police officers. The legislation has drawn the support of numerous law enforcement organizations and cities including the Peace Officers Research Association of California, California Police Chiefs Association, California Peace Officers Association, Los Angeles County Professional Peace Officers Association, Sacramento County Deputy Sheriffs’ Association, Long Beach Police Officers Association, Santa Ana Police Officers Association and the League of California Cities.

California Art League’s 3rd Annual Open Exhibition ‘My Favorite Subject’ The California Art League announced its third annual Open Juried Exhibition “My Favorite Subject,” a showcase of small works featuring originals in oil, acrylic, photography, mixed media and sculpture. The show is sponsored by the Women’s City Club of Pasadena and can be viewed at the historic Blinn House, 160 N. Oakland Ave., from June 6 to September 4. All works are available for purchase. The opening reception and awards presentation is scheduled for Saturday, June 6 from 2-5 p.m. with refreshments and a nohost bar. The reception is free, and all members of the public are encouraged to attend. The exhibition was juried by Ilana Bloch. Ms. Bloch has over 25 years of experience as a teacher and professional artist. Her work is exhibited in galleries, cultural art centers, private and corporate collections and has been featured in the Los Angeles Times as well as a number of art publications. The California Art League serves a membership of artists from the greater Los Angeles area as well as throughout the United States. Members are juried into the organization and work in a wide variety of media, producing works of all forms from the abstract to more traditional fine art. The historic Blinn House was built for Edmund Blinn, an Oak Park, Ill., native who moved to California and made a fortune in the lumber business. In 1905 Blinn hired popular Chicago architect George Washington Maher to design his California home in the Midwestern Prairie School Style. The result was a stunning home featuring a wisteria vine motif throughout. This is particularly evident in the Tiffany-inspired windows, the fireplace mosaic and the stained glass of the broken arch windows. The Blinn House was designated a Pasadena Cultural Heritage Landmark

in 1977. It has been home to the Women’s City Club since 1945 and continues to serve the Pasadena community as a meeting place for civic, cultural and educational activities. It was recently placed on the National Register of Historic Places. The current “My Favorite Subject” exhibit can be viewed Monday-Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. with extended hours on Thursdays until 9 p.m. and on the third Saturday of each month from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Call (626) 796-0560 for other times and special events. ‘The Idiot Box’: Ambitious, but Uneven Dark Comedy By Nathaniel Cayanan

Michael Elyanow’s The Idiot Box tells the story of a group of sitcom characters, a la the 1990s hit TV show Friends, as reality starts to slowly invade their cozy, ideal lives together in an upscale penthouse in New York. It all starts when Chloe (Julie Dolan) meets Omar (Jonte Legras), the AfricanAmerican guest star who acts as a catalyst of change and maturation for the Caucasian protagonist. How does he do this? Well, he kind of acts as an apple of knowledge in the garden of Eden by unintentionally ringing in the alluring complexities of reality therefore slowly unraveling the sitcom world….or not. It’s actually unclear

what brings reality into this fictional sphere, but how is not important. What is important is the growing selfawareness the characters all experience as one realizes his underlying homosexuality, another shakes off her ditzy persona and a couple slowly realize that their marriage is not all it appears to be. A lot, I know. But attempts at profundity aside, this specific production crumbles under the weight of the material’s ambitions and unevenness. This is clear even in the opening sequences in which, for 10 whole minutes, the play takes on the nose jabs at sitcom clichés, shouting television’s unappealing plasticity, making it hard to know whether any

of what we’re seeing is relevant to the story or if it’s just a joke. Even when we start to get to the meaty parts of the play, Elyanow’s equal attention to all six characters’ narrative arcs results in underwhelming and somewhat vague conclusions. Pretty much, the play wants to delve into too many complex ideas and emotions that it’s hard to really hold onto anything specific. Fortunately, the performances do shine from time to time, but only when isolated from one another. Case in point, Emma Servant and Grey Rodriguez, who play husband and wife Stephanie and Connor, really exhibit some acting chops in their individual

cathartic monologues. But when the cast is together, at times they seem incompatible, what with their overlapping dialogue that would even make David Mamet blush. It is possible however that this inconsistency all goes back to the writing, but in any event, the play holistically takes too long to find its footing and struggles to satisfy in the end. By no means is this a bad play. There is much to appreciate. The set design is clever, the ideas and characters are complex and compelling, and, again, the actors do some good work here and there. But in spite of all this, the play’s overall uneven execution prevents it from reaching its intended vision. The Idiot Box will run at NoHo Arts Center, 11136 Magnolia Blvd. in North Hollywood, until June 27. Friday and Saturday performances are at 8 p.m., and Sunday performances are at 7 p.m. Tickets are available online at www.theatre68. com or by calling (323) 9605068. General admission is $25. Feeding the Hungry at the Pasadena Farmers Market On a typical Saturday morning, Pasadena’s bustling farmers market entices hundreds of eager shoppers who sift through mountains of fresh produce. But ever wonder what happens to all that peak produce once the market winds down? Up until this March, all that produce would typically get thrown out. Now, thanks to the non-profit organization Food Forward, this food is averting the landfill and instead being re-distributed to those in need. This March, Food Forward launched their Farmers Market Recovery Program at the Pasadena Farmers Market. The program gives farmers the option to donate their produce to those in need, instead of letting it go to waste. Food Forward volunteers convene at the markets, distribute boxes to farmers wishing to donate, and then collect and weigh the boxes of full produce at the end of the market. Since its inception, Food Forward has already donated over 2,000 lbs of fresh produce to Pasadena’s own Friends in Deed - where it has been distributed, free of charge, to those who need it the most. While Food Forward’s presence at the Pasadena Market is novel, Food Forward’s impact in the community is not. Food Forward started in 2009 with the simple idea of connecting the abundance of fresh fruits and vegetables in Southern California with the 1 in 6 food insecure Angelenos in need. Food Forward’s flagship program - the Backyard Harvest Program - gleans produce from local trees, and has recovered and donated of over 100,000 lbs of fresh produce

to 17 receiving agencies in the San Gabriel Valley. Food Forward’s second program - the Farmers Market Recovery program - has now grown to include gleaning local produce at 15 farmers markets, including six west side markets, two South Bay markets, three central markets, three San Fernando Valley markets, and one San Gabriel Valley market. To expand Food Forward’s impact in the San Gabriel Valley and to feed even more people in the community, Food Forward invites you to join in gleaning at participating markets. Volunteers can sign up to recover produce on the Food Forward website at www.foodforward.org/ events. For volunteers interested in an on-going leadership opportunity, Glean Team Leaders are needed to coordinate volunteers and oversee the distribution and donation of produce. GTLs are asked to commit to at least one market glean per month. For more information on volunteer opportunities, email volunteer@ foodforward.org. Recycle Used Oil & Filters! Do you change your car’s motor oil? Did you know that used oil and oil filters are recyclable? Used oil can be re-refined or processed into new motor oil. Currently only 46% of used motor oil is being recycled, which means 20 million gallons may be illegally entering California’s waterways via stormwater systems posing a great risk to the environment. One gallon of used oil can contaminate a million gallons of drinking water; polluting our waterways and threaten fish and aquatic life. Prevent pollution; recycle used motor oil and filters! Irwindale Fire Victim Transported to Methodist Hospital

BeaconMediaNews.com

AQMD Promotes Electric Lawnmowers and Other Eco-Friendly Initiatives Continued from page 1

Story and photos By terry miller At least one man was transported to the hospital after an industrial fire broke out at 1:50 p.m. on Tuesday in the 700 block of Alpha Street in Irwindale, the site of an auto wrecking yard. Smoke could be seen for miles as Los Angeles County Firefighters attempted to extinguish the multi-alarm fire which was reported to the fire department as a commercial structure fire. Smoke and fire were showing from several vehicles on the lot.

Heavy smoke from the fire hampered firefighters at first and then after the ladder truck extended the full height, a firefighter was able to get water where it was needed the most. At one point an exhausted firefighter was assisted by an Irwindale police officer who helped attach a hose to a water tender fire truck. Over 100 firefighters and Irwindale police officers responded to the second alarm blaze.

Decker mowers for $100$250 with a gas-powered trade-in. The lawnmowers retail for about $500-$600, Cacciotti said. His presentation also mentioned the AQMD's periodic gardening equipment exchange events as well as an opportunity for municipal crews to demonstrate electric commercial landscaping equipment such as riding lawn mowers, large push mowers, hedge trimmers, saws and leaf blowers. "South Pas has done it," said Cacciotti, who is also a South Pasadena City Council member. "It took the guys about three or four months, but they love it now." State legislation, Assembly Bill 2766, appropriated funds to municipalities specifically for initiating clean-air programs. "[Azusa has] approximately $280,000 available that we can use for transit subsidies, for our transit program, for buying alternative fuel vehicles," City Manager Troy Butzlaff said in an interview. "To the extent we can use that for those purposes and look

for some of these grant opportunities to do others, by all means it would be in our best interest to do so." Butzlaff said a drawback of such environmental programs is they require a city to match the amount of the state grant. "Typically 50 percent is hard to come by, but you can use that AB 2766 pot to make those match requirements," Butzlaff said. "So, to the extent there's a project there and we have monies to do it, we'll look at it." Cities have until the end of the month to apply for clean-air grants, officials said. Despite significant population increase in Los Angeles County and surrounding areas over the last 40 years, air quality has improved. However, pollutants still exceed state and federal air quality standards. "Air quality is getting better, we're not exceeding that standard as much, but we still have a long way to go," Cacciotti said. In addition to a range of pollution sources that stem from commercial in-

dustry and the wide variety of carbon-emitting vehicles in the area on land, sea and in the air, locally Cacciotti noted the impact of freeways such as the 210, 10, 60 and 57 that hinder efforts to meet air quality standards. "You've got about 250,000 vehicles, average daily traffic on the 210, about 250,000 on the 10 and 390,000 on the 60 by the 57," Cacciotti reported. "So incredible car traffic and all the emissions coming out." In an interview Tuesday Ron Ketcham, an AQMD air quality board consultant, identified key sources of industrial air pollution in the Los Angeles Area power plants, fuel refineries, port activities involving ships, trains and trucks, the area's thousands of vaporemitting gas-station pumps as well as mining operations that aren't an uncommon sight in foothill communities. Toby McManmon 5/28/2015

Toby McManmon, a native of New Jersey and a long-time resident of Sierra Madre, died peacefully on May 28, 2015. She had most recently been a resident of Mt. San Antonio Gardens in Claremont-Pomona. Toby graduated Summa Cum Laude from St. Joseph’s College in Emmitsburg, MD and received a Master’s in Social Work from St. Louis University. Her social work career included meaningful advocacy, administration, training, collaboration, grant-writing, and therapy for children and families.

She had particular interest in culture and the immigration experience. As a first generation American of Irish and Austrian descent, she honored her heritage and was intensely interested in the peoples and cultures of the world. In Sierra Madre, she helped initiate Shakespeare in the Park, the Sierra Madre Arts & Crafts Fair, and CLIMB Christmas parties. She most recently enjoyed the Sierra Madre 4th of July parade with her family. She is survived by her

daughter Katie Simon McManmon and her grandson Quinn, as well as her deceased son Robert’s daughter Fiona Hughes Reyes and great-granddaughters Aoife and Aine. A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday June 6 at 4:00 - 5:30 p.m. at the Doubletree Hotel in Claremont. Contributions in her memory may be sent to All Saints Church Foster Care Program, 132 N. Euclid Avenue, Pasadena, CA 91101 or Mt. San Antonio Gardens’ Employer Scholarship Program in Pomona, CA.

naturally breaks down into the soil. The usage of goats for brush clearance is more cost-effective than its mechanical counterpart and is costing the city less than $3,000. To supplement the usage of goats, the city has also utilized mechanical means of clearance to maintain fire breaks. Brush clearance will continue until sometime

through mid-June. Ranchito Tivo Boer Goats is part of the Los Angeles County Fire Department’s approved goat vendor list, and has worked with Duarte as well as the cities of Monrovia, Chino Hills, San Diego and the Chino Basin Water Conservation District. The Sierra Madre City Council has announced that it is seeking public input on City matters. First, let’s comment on several articles that were printed in the City’s authorized newspaper that we - the property owners - pay for. The City Manager announced that she has hired a person to be the new Planning and Community Preservation Director. Why expand the title of this position? From the number of previous jobs that the candidate has held, one wonders if he is truly capable of doing the job. Did he leave his previous employment on his own or was he terminated? Does he just use jobs as stepping stones for increased pay? Does he have loyalty to the employer or is he simply passing through to employment elsewhere? Does the City Manager reduce costs by hiring more employees when she knows that spending needs to be reduced? Another article says that the four tiers of water rates are perfectly lawful even though they have full knowledge of the San Juan Capistrano case being ruled unconstitutional. This case was handled by the same law firm as we have so they should know better. How can the City Manager and the City Attorney justify their statements as being perfectly lawful? They knew that every gallon of water that has been used since October 9, 2013 comes

from the Metropolitan Water District pipeline and is purchased with credits that were purchased with property tax dollars that were paid directly to the San Gabriel Water District and does not cost the City government anything. This does not mention the current cost savings in lower electrical costs or water treatment costs. Let us have one rate which is based upon the real costs. Another article talks about the Utility User Tax which the City Manager and City Attorney also consider completely lawful. They keep trying to include all the other City departments when these issues were defeated twice by the people and should only include the Police and Fire Departments. What should be done in response to these false statements? How about asking them to work elsewhere? Relative to the Fire Department, how many firemen live or work in Sierra Madre? Are we working towards the goal of becoming a volunteer fire department again, which was affordable to the City? Are we training the volunteers simply to move to a paid position? If so, is there any wonder why they leave to go elsewhere? We are not a school to train employees so that they can work elsewhere and we cannot afford the expense of training. This is one place to reduce spending. The City spends enormous amounts of money on lawyers, not only for busy work of paper but also for litigation that never gets settled. This is a place for BIG money savings. The City spends HUGE amounts on plan checking services. We should be able to either hire a local firm or hire a full-time employee which would not only save a large sum of money, but also get the work done on a timely basis instead of 6 to 10 month, for plan checking. Since the charge to each customer is tea percent for the UUT and fifteen percent for the Franchise fee, then why is the income on the

BeaconMediaNews.com

franchise fees only approximately ten percent of the amount shown for the ULT? How much is the income from the water bills? Nothing has been said since the rate increases went into effect? Is anything being spent on repairing the tunnels or water pumps? If not, then when will this maintenance take place? With the continuing drought, it is vitally important for the city to improve the supply and repair any leaks. Since the water meters cost approximately one hundred dollars each and have a life span of ten years or more, why has the meter cost doubled? Does reading a meter six times a year really cost that much? What are the people supposed to think of an administration that keeps saying that less than ten million dollars annually goes into the account known as the General Fund, when all the 21 million plus income from all sources go into the General Fund and are paid out from that one bank account? There seems to be little evidence of control to spending there certainly appears to be times when the cash in the bank, including restricted funds does not cover the spending without dipping into the restricted funds. This is commonly called co-mingling. The City Council is simply provided information that the administration wants them to hear in the form that administration presents it to them in their point of view. What else can he said other than they are only given limited information. What does it take to get the whole picture? Who is looking for ways to cut the spending on needless endeavors and when will the City make judgments in favor of the people instead of the pressure group known as “Preserve Sierra Madre?” If that group wants to do something useful, then have them work on bringing back the local business like we had in the “good old days.” What does it take to right the ship? As the saying goes, “Shape up or ship out!”

Temple City to Host June 10 Meeting on New Design for Las Tunas Temple City will host a community workshop on its new proposed design for Las Tunas Drive on June 10 at 7 p.m. The meeting, held in the Council Chambers, will allow residents and business owners to provide feedback on a revised project concept. “We believe this revised concept is an important step to revitalizing our downtown,” said Mayor Tom Chavez. “I hope our residents and business owners attend the meeting so we may incorporate their concerns and thoughts into a finalized design.” Las Tunas Drive, the city’s downtown corridor, originally had a streetscape design conceptually approved in December 2012. Following ongoing feedback from residents and local businesses, the City Council directed staff to prepare a revised concept that addressed community concerns. The original $21.6 million plan included a reduction of travel lanes to one lane in each direction and

the use of back-in angled parking. The redesigned plan, at roughly $13.5 million, provides for two westbound lanes, one eastbound lane, left turn pockets at intersections and traditional parallel parking. In addition, cost savings will be realized by retaining existing curbs, gutters and sidewalks. Street trees are to remain in place and supplemented with new trees in proposed median and curb-extension locations. Nearly 40 percent of the project’s eligible construction cost will be covered by a $4.7 million grant from the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority. The project received funding because of its planned pedestrian enhancements and regional bike lanes. To learn more about the proposed design, including a conceptual crossview of the enhancements, visit www.templecity.us. June College Search Guide: The Road to College by MAY S. RUIZ As the school year comes to a close, we will look at what your children have accomplished, and what benchmarks they need to achieve to propel them to the next school year. In

the distant past, kids spent their summer just having fun, maybe working summer jobs and not thinking about school for a while. But in today’s world, that is not what’s happen-

ing.

First of all, the summer jobs are now being taken by older professionals, who could not have otherwise found gainful employment. Second of all, the race

to be the better candidate for a highly selective school does not stop at the end of the school year. Today’s kids are constantly trying to fill summer hours with enrichment

activities and going to developing countries to dig up latrines. While I am not advocating that your children just lie inert for three months as a reward for having successfully finished one school year, I would suggest a less frantic pace. Sometimes, letting their mind and body recharge would do more good than drilling for the PSATs, SATs, SAT IIs, ACTs, APs and whatever other standardized test acronyms and initials are out there. Having said that though, there is the reality that the gap between school years is so big that kids forget everything they learned, then go back to school totally unprepared for the work. Parents should let their children have a variety of fun, educational and productive activities so they don’t become stale and uninspired. Freshmen: Ninth grade is behind them! Your children’s grades should indicate that they took high school seriously and put all their efforts into getting good marks. They should have already made plans for summer programs, internships and community service work. They should engage in activities that truly reflect their passion. Instead of joining a group of kids building houses in Guatemala, they might consider an activity that would really mean something to them. Besides, college admissions officers see this on all the resumes they receive so your children would not be doing anything memorable. Encourage them to think outside the box, avoid the herd mentality. If your kids enjoy music and performance, for instance, they might consider organizing an original musical to be presented to seniors at your city’s retirement center. Sophomores: Your children’s end-ofyear marks in 10th grade should have improved over last year’s if they didn’t do well in their freshman year. College admissions officers want to see students who continue to better themselves. They need to take whatever standardized tests are required - ACT or June SAT subject tests are the norm. They also need

to continue the community service activity they started last summer. While it is advisable to show consistency for admissions officers to know that your kids have a passion for such work, they could do a variation of it. They don’t want to be monotonous. Sophomores can start researching about colleges, specifically looking for schools that offer the courses they want to major in. Juniors: The school year that just ended was a pivotal one for your children, as it would be the last full year that college admissions officers will see on your kids’ application. It should reflect your children’s efforts at getting the best marks they could muster, and an improvement over the first two years of high school. Make sure your children have their community service work, internship and enrichment program ready for summer. These activities should be a continuation of the previous years’ endeavors. This is going to be their busiest summer with standardized tests such as the ACT, SAT, SAT IIs and APs. If they have not seen the colleges they are considering applying to, this would be their last chance to visit college campuses. You might consider making it a fun summer trip for the family - my daughter and I spent two weeks visiting universities as part of our summer vacation. Your children should start thinking about their essay topic, meeting with their school counselor to make sure they have taken all the required courses for graduation and college - the UCs have their A-G requirements that need to be completed - and lining up teachers they would like to ask for recommendations. Seniors: Well, your children have accomplished a major milestone - successfully completing high school and getting accepted into a college or university! This period in their life will never again be repeated, so let them revel in what they have achieved. Give yourself a pat on the back while you’re at it, you have been a major influence in whatever path they choose to take from here.

PBA Awards Gabrielino Congressional Award High Student $5,000 Silver Medal Awarded to Arcadia High Students Scholarship On May 28, the Pasadena Bar Association (PBA) hosted its annual Law Day at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium. The luncheon event included the final round of the PBA’s 5th annual Speech Scholarship Competition, where two high school student finalists competed in a speech/debate judged by approximately 150 lawyers and dignitaries, including this year’s honorary guest Congressman Adam Schiff. The two finalists Kelsea Jeon, a junior from Arcadia High School and returning champion from 2014, and Alex Ye, a senior at Gabrielino High School competed headto-head, for a chance to win a $5,000 scholarship, presented by the Pasadena Bar Association. Alex Ye took first place for his speech on “Is the continued use of drones beneficial?” Runner up Kelsea Jeon will take home a $2,000 scholarship for her debate on “Should undocumented aliens have legal rights?” According to Don Schweitzer, PBA Family Law Section chair, co-founder of the PBA’s Speech Schol-

arship Competition, “Both Kelsea and Alex were strong presenters, and I wasn’t sure who would take home the first-place prize, especially considering Kelsea is a returning champion from last year’s event. For Alex, I think winning the competition is a nice headway into his first year of college at UC Berkeley. Kelsea is completing her junior year, so I won’t be surprised if we see her competing at next year’s competition.” The goal of the PBA’s Speech Scholarship Contest has always been to promote speech and debate, and motivate excelling high school students to keep pushing forward with their education goals. The contest gives local students a platform to showcase their speech and debate qualities in front of some of the top lawyers and dignitaries from the San Gabriel community. The finalists will also have an opportunity to interview for internships with one of the PBA’s member law firms, and continue to build their skills through mentor programs.

Arcadia High School juniors Shawn Xing and Jillian Weng were both honored in San Gabriel last Wednesday by Congresswoman Judy Chu with the Congressional Award Program’s Silver Medal. The Congressional Award is the United States Congress’ award for young Americans.

Arcadia High School Wins National Quiz Bowl Championship

The Arcadia High School Quiz Bowl team won the National Quiz Bowl Championship hosted by National Academic Quiz Tournaments (NAQT) in Chicago on May 30 and May 31. Arcadia High School is the first team from Southern California to win this prestigious academic competition. 272 of the best teams from all over the United States and Canada converged on the Hyatt Regency O’Hare to compete for the title. This was the tenth annual competition, with Arcadia High School competing in all nine previous tournaments. The Apaches’ best showing prior to this year was when they placed 5th in 2014. Arcadia went through the prelims on Saturday with a record of 8-2 and was seeded seventh going into Sunday’s playoffs. At the end of the 22nd round (the 15th match for AHS), Arcadia was one of the last two teams in the winners bracket. They lost a close match (375-360) to defending national champions Liberal Arts and Science Academy from Austin, Texas. They then went into the losers bracket and after

three matches against teams that were all ranked in the top ten in the country, found themselves again matched up against the Liberal Arts and Science Academy for the title. In the final match, after five questions, Arcadia was down 140-15. The Apaches kept their composure and rallied back to catch up at question sixteen, and then put away the defending champs for good, pulling away to a convincing 410285 win. The championship team is comprised of four seniors: Kevin Wang, Justin Nghiem, Yuqiao Zhao, and Andrew Leung, and they are coached by Arcadia High School English/Language Arts teacher Christopher Schultz. Quiz Bowl is an academic competition that has a format similar to Jeopardy, but the questions are much more difficult. The questions range over the entire spectrum of a high school curriculum and also include a certain amount of current events, sports, and popular culture. The matches feature a blend of individual competition and team col-

laboration. Arcadia High School actually had three teams qualify for the national championships. The Apaches “C” team finished in a tie for 21st place. No other school in the tournament had a higher placing second team. That team was made up of seniors Cibi Pari and Chris Chi and freshmen Matt Forster and Hamlin Liu. The Quiz Bowl team is one of more than 50 academic teams or clubs at Arcadia High School, many of which also have a long history of putting Arcadia High academics in the national spotlight. The History Bowl team also qualified for its national championship in Washington D.C. this year, and the Ocean Sciences Bowl team competed in Ocean Springs, Mississippi in a national tournament. The Science Bowl team placed 4th in Washington D.C. at its national competition, and the Arcadia High School “We the People” Constitution Team earned a coveted spot to compete in the 2015 National Finals in Washington D.C. in April.

Poll: Californians Highly Concerned About Meat From Animals Routinely Fed Antibiotics California residents are seriously concerned about the overuse and misuse of antibiotics in meat and poultry production and an overwhelming majority favor California leaders taking action to close gaps in federal oversight, according to a new poll conducted by Hart Research Associates on behalf of the Natural Resources Defense Council. Support is strong across income levels and across the political spectrum. California legislators are currently considering a measure to tackle these issues, one example being Senate Bill 27 authored by Sen. Jerry Hill, a Democrat who represents San Francisco Bay Area communities. The NRDC and other public interest groups have urged lawmakers to strengthen the bill before it reaches the governor’s desk. “Californians want bold state leadership to fight the antibiotic resistance public health crisis, which will only worsen if business as usual continues,” said Jonathan Kaplan, NRDC Food and Agriculture director. “To safeguard life-saving antibiotics for humans, we need real reforms that put an end to the unnecessary and near daily doses of antibiotics improperly fed to industrial farm animals that are not sick. Our elected officials have an opportunity to act on protecting consumer health this legislative session and the public is behind them.” Californians overwhelmingly agree that antibiotic resistance is a major concern and government action can lead the way to

protect public health: 81 percent agree that “antibiotics becoming less effective in treating disease” is a problem; 76 percent agree that “overuse of antibiotics in our food supply” is a problem; 84 percent agree that it is “important to have government oversight and regulation of livestock antibiotics use,” with 53 percent of voters who agree that this is very important; three in four favor their member of the legislature supporting a law t h a t

would increase state regulation of antibiotics use in meat and poultry. Additionally, two in three favor California taking action on its own to reduce the use of antibiotics in meat and poultry production and to close the loophole in the federal approach that allows large-scale meat and poultry producers to feed antibiotics to animals nearly every day, even if animals are not sick. SB 27 does not close this loophole. “The practice of giving routine doses of antibiotics to animals is akin to giving antibiotics to your kids before they head off to day care when what they really

should be doing is washing their hands,” said Avinash Kar, NRDC health attorney. “We don’t do that with our kids and meat and poultry producers shouldn’t be doing this with the animals they raise. Californians expect action from this industry and our state’s leaders can require that change.” The poll also found that a strong majority of Californians at all income levels support meat and poultry raised without antibiotics in the marketplace and are willing to pay more for meat and poultry that would reduce the use of antibiotics in the food supply. Seventy-three percent agree that it would be ‘worth it’ to pay between 1 percent and 3 percent more for meat and poultry to ensure that antibiotics are used only when animals are sick or to prevent disease. This willingness to pay more is nearly as high among residents with household incomes under $50,000 (70 percent worth it) as it is among those with incomes of $50,000 to $100,000, 76 percent, and those with incomes of $100,000 or more, 81 percent. Hart Research Associates conducted the survey from April 9 to April 12. It included 600 telephone interviews with California voters likely to cast ballots in November 2016. The margin of sampling error is 4 percent. Hart Research Associates' memo on the findings from a survey on the use of antibiotics in livestock in California can found on the NRDC's website.

If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. Temple City Knocks out Undefeated Monrovia 4-0; Advances to CIF Final What started out as a wildcard baseball team holding onto their playoff hopes is now a potential CIF champion as Temple City High School shut out local rival Monrovia in their fourth attempt to claim a 4-0 victory and a spot in the final of the Division 5 CIF Southern Section Baseball Tournament. The Rams’ victory over the Wildcats ended the No. 2 seed’s perfect run against league opponents, finishing with a record of 11-1 – 24-5 for the season. Temple City can improve their 19-9 season record to 20 wins if they come out on top in the final in Riverside on Saturday. “They’re rolling now with confidence and they’re staying loose,” Temple City baseball head coach Rob Nelson said on his team’s afternoon shutout. “They’re not letting anything get to them. Monrovia had a great run and they’re a great team and always difficult to beat, especially at home.” A two-run third inning sparked by multiple errors by Monrovia second baseman Ben Goettling (#26) and separate Tops-chalkboar-ad-may2015.pdf runs in the fifth and sixth innings sent Temple

City to the upcoming CIF final. “We had opportunities to score in the first three innings and sometimes when you don’t get at least a run or two home, you’re leaving yourself open for something to happen or make a mistake and have a bad inning,” Monrovia baseball head coach Brad Blackmore said. “You got to give credit to the other side. It just wasn’t our day.” Temple City ace Josh Speakes (#2) spent all seven innings on the mound during the afternoon shutout, striking out seven, giving up four walks and allowing Monrovia only six hits against the Wildcats. Monrovia’s Brian McConnell (#12) pitched 6.3 innings for the home side, striking out five, but allowing all four runs. “I knew our team was going to make the plays if I let them hit it,” Speakes said about his time on the mound. “I was just feeling it today. That was a great team we played today.” Despite the Rams’ strong finish to the game, they had a fairly frail start. The Wildcats hits in the 1 garnered 5/26/15 10:52multiple AM first three innings and had

multiple runners on base. Where the Wildcats had a plethora of base hitters, the Rams were struggling to put anyone on base. But Temple City picked up the momentum at the top of the third. With Paul Kosanovich (#24) at first, Jake LeGrand (#3) hit a double toward center field that slid right through Goettling’s legs into center field, bringing home Kosanovich and putting the Rams on the scoreboard. “I saw Jake make con-

tact so I just dropped to second base,” Kosanovich, who ended the game with two hits and a run, said about his opening run. “There was no stopping me. I was just heading around and coming home.” Ryan Lewis (#12) would practically run the same routine Kosanovich ran, taking advantage of an error by Monrovia’s second baseman in the same inning to double Temple City’s lead and make it 2-0 going into the fourth.

Monrovia could not respond like they did in their 10-7 victory against Lompoc in the semifinals and left empty handed at the bottom of the third, and the rest of the game. At the top of the fifth, another Goettling error enabled Steven Aparicio (#10) to advance to second. Aparicio would make it 3-0 off of a Chris Rabine (#2) double, before another RBI single from LeGrand brought home pinch runner Luke Halverson (#4) to make it 4-0. Aparicio ended the game with two hits, a run and a steal, while LeGrand finished with two hits and two RBIs. “We had opportunities and we didn’t cash them in.

That’s baseball,” Blackmore said. “We’ve played this team four times and they’ve all been good battles, and this one went their way.” Temple City’s victory set up a date with Hemet High School in Saturday’s final. For Nelson and the team, it will be just another game for them. “They will get after it the next few days in practice, and they’ll practice hard and prepare for our game Saturday night,” Nelson said about preparation for Saturday night’s game. “What I’ve told these guys all year is if we play our game and not worry about the other team … let’s just see how it happens in the end.” TOP: The Temple City Rams Celebrate their 4-0 Victory over Monrovia High with a Dog Pile on top of Josh Speakes who pitched the entire game.
