ARCADIA HONORS MUSICIAN & AHS ALUM JOE RAMSEY The Arcadia community is coming together to honor well-known musician and beloved AHS alum Joe Ramsey, who died recently at the age of 58, following a years-long battle with health problems. On Saturday, Feb. 21, from 7 pm to midnight, the Arcadia High School Alumni Association is presenting a benefit memorial concert at Santa Anita Park in Mr. Ramsey’s honor. Santa Anita is also dedicating the day’s last thoroughbred horse race in his memory, and the City of Arcadia has proclaimed Feb. 21 Joe Ramsey Day. Mayor Pro-Tem Gary Kovacic will present the proclamation in the Winner’s Circle immediately following The Joe Ramsey Memorial Race. As a founding member of the rock groups The Prime Movers and Dread Zeppelin, both of which featured fellow Arcadia musicians, Mr. Ramsey rose to prominence as a bass player, guitarist and vocalist during the heyday

Un-Cruising the Sea of Cortes in Mexico Part 2 By greg Aragon

Imagine being in a small boat, drifting in a calm lagoon, surrounded by sand dunes and colorful migratory birds. Then picture ripples dancing on the surface, followed by a spout of water and then a graceful and magnificent emergence of a 30-ton gray whale. If this sounds exciting, then a trip to Bahía Magdalena in Baja California is definitely the way to go. My recent getaway to Bahía Magdalena came courtesy of Un-Cruise Adventures, a cruise line specializing in small ship travel to some of the globe’s most beautiful and pristine locations. My 7-day journey concentrated on the Sea of Cortez, an area once described as the “world’s aquarium” by legendary oceanographer Jaques Cousteau. The trip began aboard the 230-ft-long Safari Endeavor, an 84-passenger exploration vessel designed to reach remote ports and beaches unavailable to most of today’s large cruise ships. With amenities such as comfortable cabins, gourmet kitchen and dining room, social lounge, fitness equipment, hot tubs, nature viewing areas, and a sports platform for swimming and launching kayaks and skiffs, the four-deck boat is a floating adventure waiting to happen. Besides discovering lost islands and beaches, one of my favorite stops during my Un-Cruise va-

cation was a visit to the charming mission town of Loreto. As the first Spanish settlement on the Baja California Peninsula, Loreto is located about 220 miles north of La Paz. The town was founded in 1697 by Jesuit missionaries, who discovered fresh water in the area and erected the Misión Nuestra Señora de Loreto (Mission of our Lady of Loreto). Considered “mother” of all the missions in Baja California, the Mission of our Lady of Loreto was founded in 1697. Over the centuries, the mission has seen many renovations and today features a sober Baroque style stone façade that welcomes town visitors above a grand plaza in the quaint downtown village. While touring Loreto, I examined the historic mission, walked along the sand, chatted with pleasant local fishermen in my elementary Spanish, and enjoyed the quiet, laid-back beach atmosphere. Back aboard the Endeavor, I joined my fellow passengers in the dining room, where the chef prepared a special wine pairing dinner with fish cevich, lobster bisque, artichoke glazed lamb rack with mint chimichurri, and a dessert of Kahula chocolate mousse in tart shells. The next day, the captain dropped anchor near Los Islotes, a jagged and mysterious rock formation jetting from the sea, that is home to a colony of

friendly, barking sea lions. While here, I hopped in a small skiff for an up-close look at the creatures from above water, while other, more adventurous passengers donned wetsuits and joined the animals as they swam through underwater arches and swaying sea coral. But when it comes to encountering marine mammals in Baja California, there is one place that must be experienced and that is Bahía Magdalena. To get to this whale wonderland, the Endeavor docked in Puerto Escondido and all of us passengers loaded into vans and drove two hours across the beautiful the beautiful Baja peninsula, past mountains, valley, lakes and deserts full of towering cactus. When we arrived at the bay, we boarded small panga boats and floated into the serene, 30-ft deep lagoon. In a few minutes our captain/guide pointed to a “footprint” along the water’s tranquil surface, an indicator that a gray whale was about to appear. And sure enough one did appear, and then another and another and even a couple babies. Soon, our 20-ft panga was “swimming” alongside a giant, 45-ft-long mother and her 15-ft baby. Pacific Plate Brewing Company By courtney alexander Pacific Plate Brewing Company was founded in December of 2012 by Jonathan Parada, Stephen Kooshian, and Steven Cardenas, who started homebrewing together as a hobby. Jonathan is the company Director/Secretary, Stephen is Director/ Brewmaster, and Steven is Director/Treasurer. Jonathan and Stephen met in 2010 while working at LegalZoom. com, while Stephen and Steven met over 10 years ago, when the two attended Pasadena City College. All three owners of Pacific Plate Brewing Co. are of Latin American descent and were interested in bringing Latino flavors and themes into their beers. Parada’s family in Guatemala was full of brewers dating back to the late 19th century. One of Pacific Plate’s most popular beers to date is the Horchata Stout, based on Kooshian’s mother’s favorite family recipe for Nicaraguan horchata. Cardenas previously pursued a Ph.D.

program at UC-Irvine in molecular and cell biology, and today uses those skills to cultivate and propagate yeast in-house for the brewing process. The name “Pacific Plate” was chosen because the region Southern California is uniquely situated on a completely different

tectonic plate from the rest of North America. The infamous San Andreas Fault marks the split between the Pacific and North American plates, which are sliding in different directions, creating earthquakes. The trio likes to think that their beer is going in a different direction than the mainstream and is set apart from the rest of North American craft beer. The owners are big

proponents of community service. They believe that being a small business requires participation in charity and community giving. They donate and/or participate in local fundraisers and events whenever possible. Pacific Plate Brewing Co. was founded with the intent to create some of the most unique beers, honoring historically accurate styles and Latin American influences. Everything is brewed in small batches, on site, with premium and imported ingredients. Some of their most popular beers include: Horchata Stout, Copa de Oro (a Belgian golden ale), Mango IPA, Widowmaker IPA, and Agave Wheat. ‘Honey, Did You Leave The Toilet Seat Up Again?’- Caltech Students Address the Time Honored Tradition with Glow-inthe-Dark Adhesive Valentine’s Day is right around the corner, but it isn’t always paradise between couples, especially when one partner leaves the toilet seat up. That’s why California Institute of Technology (Caltech) students Betty Wong and Alex Pai invented Potty Glo, photoluminescent ultra premium vinyl adhesives that can be placed on the inside of the toilet lid to notify users when the toilet seat is up. “I was sick of falling into the toilet bowl every time my boyfriend would leave the seat up at night,” says Betty Wong, co-creator of Potty Glo and a PhD student in Molecular Neuroscience at the California Institute of Technology. “One night, he placed a glow-in-the-dark adhesive on the inside of the toilet seat lid. I loved it and felt like I had to share the idea. Now I think – if lit, then sit, or no glow, no go.” Potty Glo uses a “new generation” photoluminescent mineral (strontium aluminate) that glows brightly for 12+ hours every night. The stickers

are non-radioactive, nontoxic, and recharge with just 30 minutes of natural sunlight or artificial lighting. A recent Harvard Medical School study found that at night, certain blue and white night lights throw the body’s biological clock—the circadian rhythm—out of sync. These lights may even contribute to the causation of cancer, diabetes, heart disease, and obesity. Potty Glo uses a green light, which is not detrimental to your sleep health, and lasts for more than 20 years. “Since we’re graduate students with little income, we’re trying to use crowd source funding to bring this to others,” say Wong and co-creator Alex Pai, who is a PhD student in Electrical Engineering at Caltech. Potty Glo adhesives will come in a variety of designs, including an angler fish, hearts, jellyfish and more. To learn more about PottyGlo, visit: www.pottyglo.com

after the sentencing in the high profile sexual abuse case Monday outlining the case and give the victim a chance to speak out on her pain and suffering at the hands of an adult. Taylor & Ring represented Jamie C. against the former Riverside teacher who also held a high position in Alhambra school district, Andrea Cardosa, for the sexual abuse of their client while she attended Chemawa Middle School from 1997 to 2001. At the conclusion of the press conference Jamie C. added the following: “As a child, I looked up to Andrea Cardosa. I trusted her. She made me think that she was my friend, my mentor, and someone who had my best interest at heart. As an adult, I can see now what she has really done to me. Ms. Cardosa played on my innocence and my vulnerability and knew that I was an easy target. As an adult, Ms. Cardosa knew it was wrong but she did it anyway. I’m an adult now, just a few years older than the age Ms. Cardosa was when I first met her. As an adult, I am standing up for my twelve year old self who did not have anyone to fight for her. For that twelve year old child that will be forever lost because you took her away. My twelve year old self never had a chance. She manipulated and brainwashed me and isolated me from my friends and family. I will never know the childhood I was supposed to have because Ms. Cardosa took that from me. Ms. Cardosa got her hooks in me and wouldn’t let go. Ms. Cardosa made me think that I was getting a life of luxury by giving me things and taking me places but in reality it all came at a price. I paid with my life. A life time of horrible memo-

ries of abuse and questions of why that can never be answered. There is no excuse for what Ms. Cardosa did. When I think about my eleven year old step-daughter and how I would feel if the same thing happened to her and I ask myself, “Would I be okay with her teacher or her coach ‘taking her under their wing’.” As Ms. Cardosa used to say to people about me. My answer is always the same, absolutely not. It is never okay for an adult to betray the trust of a child for any reason. Ms. Cardosa disgusts me. Because of her, I now live in fear for my own children. I fear for them every day I have to send them to school, with a baby sitter or even church. I fear for them when they are not in my sight because of her. Because I know how easily someone could take away their innocence for their own sick, selfish reasons. I don’t believe Ms. Cardosa when she said that she “regrets it”. I think the only thing she regrets is getting caught. She even lied when she said I was the only one that she did this to. Another victim, Jane Doe 2, came forward and who knows how many others she has scarred and ruined for the rest of their lives. She knew better. She knew exactly what she was doing. And for that, she deserves to be in jail. Ms.Cardosa has sentenced me to a lifetime of pain, mistrust, bad memories, nightmares, and depression. It has been seventeen years that I have had to live with what she has done to me. She should consider herself lucky that her sentence is not as long as the sentence that she gave to me because if it were up to me, she would stay in jail just as long as I have to endure the hurt that she has caused me.”

Shipping Corporations Go “On Strike” Against Their Workers In Light of Self-Created Conditions. By nick Kipley The Port of Long Beach and Los Angeles shut down this past weekend because the Pacific Maritime Association claimed that there was no room to put the containers from a flood of ship traffic currently anchored off the coast. The PMA also claimed there were not enough qualified dock crane operators to move freight for stacking within the port. The shutdown cost an estimated onebillion dollars a day this weekend, and occurred because of port conditions, ships weren’t being unloaded fast enough. Renegotiations of the longshoremen and warehouse worker’s contract is in the works this week, so when PMA claims that dockworkers want a raise in their “$1,200 a day” salary, it’s difficult not to feel like the dockworkers are being a bit lazy. The only problem

with this narrative is that the PMA is an association whose strongest members are comprised of seven of the largest European and East Asian shipping corporations in the world. They are not dockworkers. The PMA are the ones responsible for clogging the Port of L.A./L.B.C. with their own ships, while simultaneously complaining that there are too many ships in the port. The shutdown this weekend occurred when the PMA ceased to pay the International Longshoreman and Warehouse Union for their labor, whom the PMA claims has been declining in efficiency. And, again, this isn’t because the dockworkers went on strike: the largest port in the United States ground to a halt this weekend because, in the long run, it might allow the shipping corporations who use the port to turn a bigger profit.

The port of L.A./ L.B.C. is a major economic engine generating an alleged 17% of the nation’s Gross Domestic Product alone. A shutdown effects all the businesses in the San Gabriel Valley who import or export overseas. Also, when a shutdown or backlog ends, the San Gabriel Valley’s three major North/South freeways—the 605, the 710, and the 110— get overloaded with truck traffic. A ILWU’s Director of Communications, Craig Merrilees, claims that in the past months the buildup of containers in the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach that led to the shutdown has occurred due to a number of factors. Many of these factors are due to how the nature of shipping itself is changing. “Back in 2010 the biggest ship [could carry] a ‘monstrous’ 10,000 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEU’s, or, the ac-

tual “containers” you see stacked up on a shipping container). Hyundai is in the works right now to build a 19,000 TEU ship.” Merrilees explains that with bigger ships, three things occur for dockworkers. First and foremost, bigger ships mean that there is obviously going to be a higher concentration of containers from these ships, and that those containers have the potential two physically clog the port. Secondly, carrier groups using these huge new ships seek to optimize the amount of containers they are capable of carrying by forming between alliances to maximize profitability. “Just like airlines,” Merilees says, “So now when a ship arrives from Asia it may be carrying containers from several different carriers and those containers have to be sorted.” Please see page 6

After setup patients are passed to our patient care center for ongoing compliance care. Our licensed clinicians make outgoing calls at 72 hours, 30 days and 90 days after setup to interdict any problems patients may be having. A field R/T will make a re-visit to a patient in their home where a problem cannot be resolved over the phone.

Our goal is to have happy, compliant patients while taking the brunt of the every-day questions patients invariably have. This relieves the burden from our referring physician’s offices who otherwise have to deal with this call volume, and depending on the experience of the doctor in this field, may not be able to answer typical questions the patient has regarding equipment issues (e.g. how to fix a leaking mask).

Skeptical?

So you’ve heard it all before? All the DME’s brag that they’re the best and have a great compliance and supply replenishment program.... everybody talks the talk...so who do you believe? Your patients...that’s who! We’ll prove it to you. Send us two or three patients and then ask your patients about the care they received and their opinion of the process... then compare the results to your existing DME provider. Talk to your staff about the interaction they have with our office. Look at our documentation. Reach out to Bill Kleiman (contact info below) to set up an inservice over lunch with your staff to go over our program and answer any questionvs you may have.

The prescribing doctor receives documentation by eFax (or electronically via EMR system integration), starting with confirmation of receipt of the referral through every touch we have with the patient. This includes a copy of the 2-page compliance reports containing our Download on Demand® data and a copy of the notes made by our clinician during a call. Our proprietary systems automate the flow of documentation keeping referring doctors completely informed about their patients’ progress and ensure physicians have the documentation they need for follow-up consultations with their patients.

Shipping Corporations Go “On Strike” Continued from Page 5

Which leads to the third problem, the one that Merrilees claims is a predominate factor in the recent work slowdown, “Those containers are dependent upon a steel-frame truck chassis unless it’s going on the rail,” he says, “And those truck chassis are not interchangeable between container companies. So if you have a shortage of truck chassis, the containers have to sit and wait.” Already in the works, four major chassis companies in the port are doing what the carrier groups have been doing. By pooling their resources they hope that in forming a “grey” chassis pool they can help alleviate some of the congestion, but the pool won’t be ready until March. Also, in order to move these containers around the backlogged ports, you need a special piece of equipment called a yard crane, or T-crane. Yard cranes are not the large quayside or gantry cranes one pictures when conceptualizing term “industrial port.” T-cranes are specialized pieces of equipment that work like a forklift, but instead of lifting the containers from the bottom they grip them from the top. The PMA alleges that ILWU is not providing enough experienced and safety-certified yard crane operators. To counter this the ILWU claims that the only reason this is occurring is that, due to the backlog occurring because of the reasons listed above, the PMA has been demanding that workers with very little training and experience to operate the huge pieces of heavy machinery in order to clear out the congestion. Merrilees says that “As the congestion crisis got worse and worse and the company started putting more and more people in the driver’s seat up until the point that they were putting people in these cranes with zero training. And that’s when the ILWU put their foot down.” ILWU is adamant

that if a worker wants to operate a yard crane, they need to go through a rigorous training scheme. An accident involving what is essentially a giant forklift carrying a twenty-foot shipping container could easily be fatal. In addition, the port slowdown has also been attributed to a number of other factors that add to the amount of time it takes for the whole import/export process. The gate hours for the port itself need to be extended, mandatory safety checks and double checks need to become more efficient, and night and evening shifts need to be reinstated by the PMA. For reasons that are the definition of counterintuitive: because of the recent work slowdown in the weeks leading up to the full shutdown, the PMA cancelled night shifts in the Ports of L.A. and L.B.C. back in January. What is interesting now is that the PMA has forced the ILWU into a position where it the public has been led to believe that some sort of leaderless, wildcat strike is occurring; or that the port shut down due to an essential laziness that comes from being an overpaid union worker. According to a graph posted on the PMA’s website, a longshoreman for the ILWU working 2,000 a year makes a staggering $137,000 annually. The PMA also claims that they pay out nearly two-billion dollars in wages each year. Or, roughly, the amount of money they lost by closing the port for two days. The PMA is now seeking to bring in a federal regulator to mediate talks with the ILWU. In essence the shipping magnates created a problem and now are complaining about it to the government as though the problem is not something they have any control over. Leading to a confusing situation that has led to some especially arrogant commentary that smacks of Keynesian recklessness.

An editorial that comes up at the top of Google when searching the incorrect term, “Port Strike,” brings up an article by Forbes titled.” Not only is this sort of rhetoric misleading, but it is damaging to labor unions everywhere. Democratic Congresswoman Janice Hahn of California’s 44th district representing the Port of Los Angeles said it best via Facebook, “Reducing the hours of port workers is not the way to clear the backlog from our ports. Instead of working with the ILWU to create jobs and move commerce – the rumored actions by the PMA will cut jobs in California and have a negative ripple effect on the entire U.S. economy.” So what’s the benefit of getting the public against unions in this case? The shipping terminal TraPac is the first to automate their operations using GPS guided cranes and computerization. That means no ILWU worker is needed to unload the containers from the ships. The ILWU has contested that the cranes must be manned in compliance with Union rules, and nevertheless productivity in the TraPac dock is “way down,” according to one report. By getting the public against Unions it will be easier for big agglomerates like the PMA to lobby for legislature potentially allowing for union-busting automation, which will make the PMA richer by eliminating skilled jobs. But the ILWU are a strong union. As it says in point VII of the ILWU’s Ten Guiding Principles, ratified way back in 1953 when Ronald Reagan was a still a Democrat and trying to make it as a television actor: “Just as water flows down to it’s lowers level, so do wages if the bulk of the workers are left unorganized. To organize the unorganized must be a cardinal principle of any union worth its salt.” And hopefully as talks between the PMA and the ILWU remain just as strongly organized.

Any information obtained will be used for that purpose. “NOTICE TO POTENTIAL BIDDERS: If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid on a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of the outstanding lien that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call 714-277-4845, or visit this internet Web site www.usaforeclosure.com, using the file number assigned to this case T.S.# 80654(a). Information about postponements that are very short in duration or that occur close in time to the scheduled sale may not immediately be reflected in the telephone information or on the internet Web site. The best way to verify postponement information is to attend the scheduled sale.” FEI # 1077.00182 02/09/2015, 02/16/2015, 02/23/2015 BURBANK INDEPENDENT
