ICE arrests 9 and recovers $65M in cash in Fashion District bust Federal authorities Wednesday arrested nine people and seized approximately $65 million in cash in a massive sweep of the Fashion District used as money laundering for Mexican drug cartels. The raids, conducted by approximately 1,000 officers with the DEA, ICE, IRS and FBI, were carried early Wednesday morning on Fashion District businesses in Los Angeles The businesses were suspected of using “Black Market Peso Exchange” schemes to launder drug money for international cartels, the Department of Justice said. In one of three cases unsealed Wednesday alleges that the Sinaloa Drug Cartel used a Fashion District business to accept and launder ransom payments to secure the release of a United States citizen who was kidnapped by the organization after Please see page 5

Santa Anita Park, which will host the Breeders’ Cup World Championships for an unprecedented third consecutive year on Oct. 31 & Nov. 1, is seeking volunteers from the local community to help accommodate the needs of the many thousands of visitors that are anticipated over the two days at The Great Race Place.

Volunteers are needed to assist in a variety of patron services: Greeting racing fans as they enter the track’s grounds, escorting horse owners from their seats to and from the Paddock, staffing various areas to answer questions and provide directions, coordinating traffic arrangements and staffing the Breeders’

Cup Press Center. Breeders’ Cup volunteers will have an opportunity to be involved with a world-class sports event that will be televised nationally on NBC Sports Group. Those interested are encouraged to contact Sheila Solis at (626) 574-6663, or via email at sheilasolis@santaanita.com.

in California history. But 18-year-old Nathaniel Tsai is still hoping to get your vote. Tsai is running on the Republican ticket for the state Assembly seat that is held by Democratic incumbent Chris Holden in a district that stretches along Interstate 210 from Pasadena to Upland, excluding the city of Arcadia. He entered the primary season late and utilizing the write-in vote, beat out two other write-in candidates. Now he’s poised to fight an admittedly uphill battle in a heavily Democratic district. But Tsai is not letting that stop him. “My friends and I were originally looking for internships to get involved with,” Tsai said. “We didn’t see anyone

A 2013 graduate of San Marino High School who is studying government at Claremont McKenna College, Tsai said he doesn’t lean as far to the right as much of the party outside California does. “I’m socially moderate and fiscally conservative,” he said. “The issues I felt were most important to me this election were the fiscal issues.” “I am really against Common Core,” he said. “In the state of California it’s probably not going to get repealed. Fourteen out of 38 states that had Common Core repealed it in less than three years.” (Shel Segal can be reached at ssegal@ beaconmedianews.com and followed via Twitter @ segallanded).

The burden of sin can sometimes lie heavy on us all, and heavy does it lie on Father James, a waning priest but a genuinely good man who futilely attempts to restore the damaged members of his small, Irish town to their better selves while under the shadow of transgressions not yet forgotten. Calvary is a remarkable new film from writer/director John Michael McDonagh, who, impressively, has only one other directing credit to his resume, 2011’s The Guard. The film is set in the idyllic, Northern Irish coastal town of Sligo, although it’s never actually mentioned, and stars Brendon Gleeson in the title role. Gleeson acutely embodies the very tragic character of James, who we never see out of his clerical vestments. The veteran actor is subdued and poised, giving a quiet performance where compassion and rage both gurgle just under the surface of his calamitous beard and shaggy hair. He suffers the emotional slings and arrows of his neighbors with dignity and patience, although less successful in certain moments, the way a parent might suffer an unruly child. The film begins in the confession booth of James’ church, where an anonymous parishioner confesses about the childhood sexual abuse he endured under the hands of a priest, now deceased. He promises to murder James on the following Sunday as penance for his suffering precisely because James is a good man and because no one will understand why a good priest was murdered. From the opening scene, then, the narrative is

imbued with a sense of dread and tension made only more palpable by the tension between James and the sordid cast of characters he encounters as we follow him over the course of seven days through his dealings with people caught somewhere between heaven and hell. There is the abusive husband, the adulterous wife and her adulterer, the cynical doctor, the lonely, suicidal millionaire, a socially awkward teen, and others. The person with the most redemptive qualities is Fiona, James’ daughter who comes from London after a suicide attempt to rekindle with her father. Although we don’t get any visual glimpses of James’s pre-ordained life, we know that James became a priest after his wife died. The film on the whole can be darkly comedic and even surreal at times, reminiscent of David Lynch’s Blue Velvet in a couple of memorable scenes. It is also a film noir style mystery that asks us to guess who the would-be murderer might be, and whether Father James knows who it is. The aerial landscape shots of Northern Ireland peppered throughout the film seem to remind us that there can still be exquisite beauty found in isolation and starkness, much like the human characters within it. The ensemble cast, including certain notables like Chris O’Dowd, Aiden Gillen, and Kelly Reilly, give strong performances that fulfill the director’s very specific vision here, which I venture to say was to make a type of divine comedy using low and vulgar characters to contemplate higher issues of redemption and forgiveness.

La Primaria's back to school by Mark Peters

Aug. 25 marks the first day of school at La Primaria Elementary School in the Mountain View School District, which means — for parent-friending Facebook and Twitter users among us — the first day in a month-long torrent of back-to-school photos, forced smiles, cafeteria food, bus rides and getting to know new friends. Its school time again and with that in mind, a warm welcome to La Primaria’s new Principal Tony Lugo. We look forward to getting to know you and having you as principal. Mrs. Isela, La Primaria School Office Manager, states to all the children “Welcome back! I hope your summer was a great one! For me, I had to continue working on CELDT testing and to get ready for the opening of our school and for our new Principal, Mr. Tony Lugo. I am so excited about another year at La Primaria! We plan to work hard to continue to find ways to improve and maintain meaningful communication with you about your

children and their school. I am certain that your children are also excited about this year.” You’re probably feeling excited and maybe a little sad that summer is over. Some kids feel nervous or a little scared on the first day of school because of all the new things: new teachers, new friends, and maybe even a new school. Luckily, these “new” worries only stick around for a little while. The first day back to school the students are encouraged to make signs showing their name, what grade they are in and who their teacher is. The kids really go above and beyond with their creativity and have a blast walking around with them. Degas Peters stated “I can’t wait to go to school and show everyone my sign.” When I took the picture of Katarina and Abigail Delgadillo they were so very proud of the hard work they put into their back to school posters and I must say did an amazing job with creativity. The teachers of La Primaria kick off the school

year by introducing themselves and talking about all the stuff you’ll be doing that year. Some teachers give students a chance to tell something about themselves to the rest of the class. But not to worry kids, you have some of the best teachers in the district and they are here to guide you through the first day jitters. The administration staff of La Primaria is the life blood to the school.

Principal Lugo, Office Manager Mrs. Isela, Health Clerk Ms. Haro and Front Office Clerk Ms. Ingrid Aguilar ensure the efficiency and smooth operation of the school. Upon arriving at La Primaria the morning of the 25th, I was able to walk through the groups of children and watch them smiling, playing and telling stories of their summer adventures. Many of the children came up to me and gave me big hugs and wanted their picture taken. I have never seen so many kids who want to ham it up in front of the camera. Capturing their smiles and letting them see the picture makes it worth it all. While walking through the playground I bumped into Selene Vasquez-Diaz who was dominating a game of FourSquare against 3 boys. All in the entire first day mood amongst the kids was one of excitement. The teachers at La Primaria Elementary are the diamonds of the school. There are not enough words of unwavering appreciation and gratitude to express what you mean to the kids and the school. A quote from GreatSchools.org tells of one parents thankfulness “My daughter is finishing

Kindergarten at La Primaria. I cannot say enough about her teacher and her curriculum. My daughter is excelling in math, reading and writing. La Primaria caters to the individual needs of every child, challenging them all along the way without compromising the education of the other students in the classroom. My daughter’s teacher did an excellent job at recognizing how quickly she was grasping the lessons and placed her in an advanced learning environment. I am very thankful to Ms. Gaytan and La Primaria for their time, effort, dedication, and care. A++++++ all the way!” This one parent sums up what life at La Primaria is like for our children. Aristotle said it best “Those who educate children well are more to be honored than parents, for these only gave life, those the art of living well.” There are many unsung heroes who make our life beautiful and we often forget to recognize those who made it just that…our teachers at La

Primaria Elementary and throughout the Mountain View School District. As a La Primaria teacher you are a pillar of support, an epitome of strength, as loving as a mother, as strict as a father, as caring as a friend, a disciplinarian, yet always so approachable and warm at heart. You as a teacher are a beautiful human being. This is precisely what a La Primaria teacher is, for every student. You are their mentors, and role models. If you have been lucky to have teachers like these, think... have you thanked them or appreciated them for their noble work? Maybe you never got a chance to. Take it now. There’s no need to wait for Teacher’s day or any other occasion to thank someone who has meant so much to you - your teacher. Don’t hesitate in saying that beautiful word “thank you” to someone as beautiful as your teacher. Good luck to you all on this new and exciting 2014 school year.

the Kathermans. Shortly after receiving the water basin’s donations, the agency began writing checks on behalf of Smith and his family that covered school tuition for his son and two daughters along with a $3,500 check that went to repair Smith’s boat.

Electric, eclectic fun and food in Long Beach By Greg Aragon Long Beach is known for its world-class Aquarium of the Pacific and the legendary Queen Mary ocean liner. But as I recently learned, the water-front city is also an eclectic paradise, full of incredible restaurants, great hotels, and a myriad of awesome activities. My getaway to the city began at the luxurious Renaissance Long Beach Hotel, located in the heart of the entertainment district in downtown. Here I checked into a gorgeous 10th-floor suite with a wall of windows overlooking the Queen Mary and Carnival Cruise Ship Dome, the historic 1926 Breakers Hotel, and the Pacific Ocean. With chic, casually elegant rooms and great location, the hotel made a perfect launching pad for my visit. Once acquainted with the 374-room hotel, I began my Long Beach tour with an incredible Shrimp Po’Boy sandwich and a spicy Bloody Mary at the nearby Attic on Broadway. Featuring New

Orleans-styled Southern food in an historic Long Beach house, The Attic’s eclectic menu serves favorites such as Mac ‘n Cheetos with bacon; bacon-wrapped jalapenos stuffed with crab and cream cheese; chicken and okra gumbo; fried green tomatoes; barbecued St. Louis pork ribs; and a host of Bloody Mary’s with garnishes such as pickled eggs, beef ribs, and hamburger sliders hanging off the rim. After lunch, we embarked on an electric bike adventure down the boardwalk with Pedego Electric Bikes. Featuring a fleet of cool, pedal-assisted bicycles, the company offers visitors a unique way to explore Long Beach. With a powerful, yet compact electric motor, the bikes are perfect for people of all ages and physical abilities. Our trek began near Shoreline Village and took us about 8 miles down the beautiful winding bike path along the shore. It was a great ride. Whenever I felt a little winded I pulled back on the throttle and the electric motor took over. Back at the Renaissance Hotel, I soaked in the Jacuzzi and relaxed before my next

adventure – a voyage through the canals of Long Beach’s legendary Naples Island. Led by the Gondola Getaway company, the journey brings old world charm and thousand-year-old tradition to the city, as passengers cruise on authentic Italian gondolas through serene canals, under bridges, and past multi-million dollar mansions. It’s no wonder Gondola Getaway has been featured in Westways Magazine, on CNN, and now in Greg’s Getaway. Along our cruise, we sipped wine, nibbled on snacks and were treated to an

Italian song by our gondolier. And as dusk approached on the warm summer night, we were rewarded with an amazing sunset that reflected off the water and bounced through the canals. After our gondola ride we drove to The Boat House on the Bay for a wonderful seafood dinner. Located on Long Beach’s Alamitos Bay, the restaurant serves an array of fresh seafood, sushi, sashimi and oysters, as well as organic steaks, salads and pastas. My Boat House dinner included a half-dozen fresh oysters on the half shell,

a tasty jumbo shrimp cocktail with horseradish sauce, and an exciting Sashimi Roll, with tuna, yellowtail, salmon, crab and avocado, tempura fried with spicy mayo, eel and ponzu sauce. From here it was back to the Renaissance Hotel for a nightcap at SIP, the hotel’s hip and glitzy lounge. And in the morning we strolled over to the world-famous Queen Mary for a behind-thescenes tour. Led by an expert historian, the excursion discussed the glory days of Queen Mary’s tenure on the high seas. Our guide talked

about her groundbreaking construction, her time as a troopship during WWII and her days as the world’s most luxurious and technologically advanced ocean liner. We even visited the exact cabin that Sir Winston Churchill stayed in. For more information on visiting Long Beach, visit www.visitlongbeach.com. the U.S. government seized more the 100 kilograms of cocaine that he was supposed to distribute. The man was held hostage, beaten, shot, electrocuted and waterboarded at a ranch in Mexico. He was released after relatives paid $140,000 in ransom. The other two cases in the indictment involved defendants who worked for or owned businesses in the Fashion District that operated a Black Market Peso

Exchange scheme. The peso broker arranges for the illegally obtained dollars to be delivered to the United Statesbased vendors, such as the stores in the Fashion District, and these illegally obtained dollars are used to pay for the goods purchased by the foreign customers,” officials said. The scheme is typically used by Mexican cartels to collect money from U.S.based sale without the risk

of smuggling bulk amounts of cash across the border. BMPE also lessens the risk of illegal activity being detected. “Los Angeles has become the epicenter of narcodollar money laundering with couriers regularly bringing duffel bags and suitcases full of cash to many businesses,” said Robert E. Dugdale, the Assistant United States Attorney who oversees the Criminal Division in the Central District of California.

You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a Trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property.
