Santa Anita’s rewly renovated main track to re-open for training on September 2 Under the direction of Track Superintendent Dennis Moore, Santa Anita’s one mile main track has been totally renovated and its original sand and clay mix has been replaced by a single-source natural material known as El Segundo Sand. The track, which has been closed to training since July 11, will reopen for use on Sept 2 in advance of Santa Anita’s 2014 Autumn Meet, which begins September 26. A naturally occurring, indigenous soil, El Segundo Sand will help to ensure balanced drainage during periods of wet weather and a uniform, safe cushion year ‘round. “It’s been my experience that the best surfaces around the country are all comprised of naturally occurring soils that are typically indigenous and not made by man,” said Moore, who was hired by Santa Anita Please see page 29

Man convicted of brutal rape, assault in El Monte faces 125 years in jail

Armed Sex offender returns to home Sierra Madre after serving invasion eight years in prison robbery in Arcadia Tuesday On Tuesday at approximately 11:58 A.M., the Arcadia Police Department received a call of a female screaming for help in the 1000 block of N. Earlier this week, the Construction Authority received notice that the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) has approved the second of two requests for noise mitigation at future atgrade crossings between Pasadena and Azusa. The request was to install shrouds around the gate bells to direct the noise down to the intersection, and add the ability to silence the bells once all crossings gates are in the horizontal position, for crossings adjacent to residential areas. Earlier this year, the CPUC approved these measures for five at-grade crossings within the non-shared corridor; the second request was for the nearly four miles of shared corridor with freight.
