Arcadia City Manager Dominic Lazzaretto has appointed Kurt Norwood to the position of Arcadia Fire Chief, effective May 1, 2014. Mr. Norwood is currently the Acting Fire Chief for the City of Arcadia. Accepting the appointment, Mr. Norwood said: ā€œI am truly grateful for the opportunity provided me by the City Council and City Manager to serve the residents of Arcadia in the capacity of Fire Chief. Fellow deputies and officers from surrounding law enforcement agencies stood guard at Deputy David March's memorial for a 24 hour vigil on Tuesday, April 29, 2014 from midnight until 11:59 pm to honor the sacrifice he made for the communities he loved and served. Deputy David March was shot and killed after

stopping a vehicle in Irwindale, California, on April 29, 2002 at approximately 10:40 am. The suspect had stated to friends that he wanted to kill a police officer during a traffic stop. The suspect intentionally got stopped and waited for Deputy March to get in front of his patrol car so he could open fire, as Deputy March would

have no place to take cover. Deputy March was shot several times in the head and chest. The suspect, who was identified shortly after the shooting, fled to Mexico where he remained for 4 years. On February 23, 2006, the suspect was arrested in Mexico by US Marshals and Mexican federal agents following a

joint investigation. He was extradited back to California and on March 2nd, 2007, he pleaded guilty to seconddegree murder and was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. Deputy March had served with the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department for 7 years. He is survived by his wife and daughter.

Arcadia’s 16th annual Law Day slated May 10 The City of Arcadia and the Arcadia Chinese Association will offer a free Ask-a-awyer Program at the Arcadia Public Library, 20 West Duarte Road, on Saturday, May 10 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. as part of the nationwide Law Day celebration. Volunteer attorneys are available to meet with the public and provide them with a free brief one-on-one consultation on general legal questions. They will provide a summary of legal rights and general advice on a ā€œwalk-upā€ basis, and where appropriate, will refer individuals to the proper legal or governmental organizations. Law Day attorneys are unable to accept any cases from the people they meet. Law Day attorneys will answer questions on immigration, consumer rights, landlord-tenant issues, insurance problems, property, family law, bankruptcy, government benefits, employee rights, workers’ compensation, personal injury and other topics.
