Temple Grandin visits Glendale at Autism & Asperger’s Syndrome Conference Exceptional Minds student Noah Schneider broke for lunch at Friday’s Autism & Asperger’s Syndrome Conference at Embassy Suites in Glendale and found himself seated next to Dr. Temple Grandin, the worldfamous speaker with autism who was the keynote at the conference. Grandin’s insights into the visually-gifted autism brain has inspired a generation of young men and women with autism like Noah, who is high-functioning and has a consuming interest in art. “I couldn’t believe she was sitting next to me and looking at my work,” said Noah, who hopes to turn his advantage as a visual thinker into a career in animation, post-production or other visual arts field. Noah was diagnosed with autism when he was three years old and showed an early interest in building life-size sculptures. Throughout his school years, Noah’s teachers quickly found they could engage him using art. By senior year of high school, he had won numerous animation awards, including prizes at the International Student Film Festival Hollywood, Reflections Competition, and the

A man suspected in a series of bank robberies linked to the “Make it Quick” Bandit was arrested and is expected to appear before a federal magistrate this afternoon. Julio Cesar Porres, 40, of Lennox, and former resident of Gardena, was charged with bank robbery

in a criminal complaint filed in United States District Court in Los Angeles. Multiple police departments in the South Bay region of Los Angeles and FBI agents have investigated the “Make it Quick” series of bank robberies over approximately four years to determine the identity of the

suspect which, until recently, was unknown. The robber was known as the “Make it Quick” Bandit, based on the instructions provided to tellers while presenting a note demanding cash. During his robberies, the Make it Quick BanPlease see page 4

Escape to Santa Maria Valley By Greg Aragon I didn’t visit the central coast for the Radisson Hotel. I went for wine tasting, an historic steakhouse, and unique Californian sand dunes. But after checking into a room located a few yards from a runway full of small airplanes, the hotel became a surprising highlight. When not watching planes take-off and land from my room (I couldn’t hear them because the hotel is well insulated), my friend and I were busy exploring Santa Maria Valley’s more popular attractions. One of our favorite discoveries was the legendary GuadalupeNipomo Sand Dunes (www. dunescenter.org), home to 19 miles of the largest, most bio-diverse coastal dunelagoon ecosystem on earth. To make the most of our visit, we started at the Dunes Center in the city of Guadalupe. Here, inside a beautifully restored craftsman house / visitor’s center, we joined an expert guide, who led a group of us on

a hike into the 22,000-acre park. During the tour, the guide showed us the spot where the silent movie classic “The Ten Commandments” was filmed in 1923. Today the remains of the movie set are eerily buried in fluffy sand hills, with only a few artifacts visible. The dunes were also featured in the movie “Pirates of the Caribbean III,” which starred Johnny Depp as Capt. Jack Sparrow. Our next stop was Oso Flaco Lake. The tour of this area begins with a walk through a riparian forest teeming with Arroyo willow, cottonwoods, ox tongue and twinberry, as well as poisonous hemlock, stinging needles and poison oak. While investigating the plants, we saw pack rat nests built in trees and ran into a few cute raccoons looking for scraps. At the banks of the natural, fresh water lake we stepped onto a serene wooden footbridge leading to the ocean. While on the bridge we saw ducks, swallows, American coots, cormorants and herons. We also saw large footprints in the sand left by roaming bobcats.

For dinner we drove to the nearby town of Orcutt for an unforgettable dinner the Far Western Tavern (www.farwesterntavern. com), a 50 year-old local establishment known for juicy steaks and fresh seafood. Recently named one of the “Top 10” barbecue restaurants in the western United States by Sunset Magazine, the Far Western moved from Guadalupe to Orcutt last year, but continues to

serves a steady clientele of locals and hungry Highway 1 travelers. My dinner was highlighted by the restaurant’s signature Bull’s Eye, a deliciously tender, boneless rib eye steak, with generous marbling. With this I devoured a bay shrimp cocktail, a house salad and pinquito beans. My friend enjoyed a halfrack of succulent baby back ribs, with citrus and sherry wine glaze. While dining we

admired the new locations, modern rustic decor. In the morning, we watched planes come and go from our room. Before breakfast, I exercised at the Radisson’s fitness center and relaxed in the sauna and then enjoyed an impressive Sunday brunch with champagne and live music. After brunch I drove to the Riverbench Vineyard and Winery (www.riverbench.com), located along

Foxen Canyon Rd, in the heart of Santa Maria Valley wine country. Specializing in Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, the 300-acre winery features a unique tasting room located inside an historic 1920s Craftsman house. A new California Appellate case just published August 8, 2013, “Glaski v. Bank of America”, holds that a homeowner can challenge his lender’s right to foreclose by showing that the Deed of Trust never made it into the securitized trust until after the trust’s closing date. This is the case in most loans made in the last 12 years. If the bank foreclosed we should be able to get the homeowner money damages and/or the house back. Or a lawsuit could be filed and a court ruling obtained preventing the court from foreclosing. Recently enacted Sections 2924(a)(6) and 2924.19 of California Civil Code provide the same relief to homeowners. It is highly suggested that homeowners take this window of opportunity to get relief before the banks get Congress to close this door with national legislation. Contact us so we can help you.

mathematics. The guides are available in English and Spanish on the CDE Common Core State Standards Web site, as well as on California State PTA site. “Parent Involvement Day is the perfect time to release these guides—because we know that well-informed, engaged parents can make all the difference in our work to give every student a world-class education,” Torlakson said. “With modern standards and assessments and a new approach to school funding, we have a historic opportunity for serving these students, their families, and our entire state.” “This is a crucial time

for public education,” said California State PTA President Colleen A.R. You. “The new Common Core standards will help us prepare all students for college and careers, and help them develop vital critical thinking and deeper learning skills. We’re delighted to have Superintendent Torlakson’s support in sharing information as widely as possible with parents about what the new standards will mean for their children and schools.” Originally developed by the National PTA, each guide includes: •An overview of some of the key items students will learn in the Common Core

State Standards for Englishlanguage arts and mathematics. •Ideas for activities that enable parents to support learning at home. •Topics of discussion for talking with teachers about student academic progress. These state-developed standards, which California and 45 other states have voluntarily adopted over the past few years, are designed to provide all students with the deeper learning, critical thinking, and other skills they need to prepare for college and a career. They describe what students should know and be able to do at each grade level.

Thursday, PETA sent an urgent letter to R. Scott Jenkins, president of the 2014 Pasadena Tournament of Roses, urging him to require a change in the design of SeaWorld’s float for the Rose Parade in January. Currently, the display shows majestic orcas living free in the open sea. But at SeaWorld, orcas are restricted to concrete tanks, where they often break their teeth by gnawing on the underwater bars because of stress and boredom—all in the name of performing tricks at SeaWorld. PETA’s suggested design shows an orca confined to a fish bowl and surrounded by chains—a more accurate depiction of how these magnificent animals are deprived of everything that’s natural and important to them at SeaWorld. The caption reads, “SeaWorld of Hurt—Where Happiness Tanks.” “Require SeaWorld to represent its treatment of or-

cas more accurately by using [PETA’s] design with a slight tweak to the parade’s theme— ’SeaWorld: Where Dreams Never Come True,’” writes PETA Senior Vice President Lisa Lange, a Pasadena resident. “[W]e urge you to do the right thing for the orcas who have suffered so much and embrace this change in the float design.” In the wild, orcas share intricate relationships with one another and swim as much as 100 miles every day. Many orcas at SeaWorld—including Tilikum, the subject of the compelling documentary Blackfish who killed three people, including SeaWorld trainer Dawn Brancheau— were rounded up rodeo-style and taken from their family pods in the wild. At least 25 orcas have died in U.S. SeaWorld facilities since 1986— and not one died of old age. Calls to TOR for comment were not immediately returned.

West Covina City Manager salary increase under fire; Assemblyman calls tactics “distasteful”

Assembly member Roger Hernandez (D-West Covina) released a statement about the recent move by particular members of the West Covina City Council to increase perks to the current city manager. This move comes as a last minute effort before the new elected city council members take office: “Earlier today, I read the Article that appeared in the San Gabriel Valley Tribune regarding the coded language to increase the salary and other perks to the current City Manager. I find it very appalling and disturbing that members of this council are willing to increase perks and salary to a City Manager that has neither proven himself nor demonstrated the capacity to lead the city into tomorrow. In a time when state and local governments, such as the City of West Covina, have reduced public safety personnel (such as police, firefighters, state and municipal employees)

we cannot afford to provide unnecessary incentives. How is it possible that our very local government is trying to provide an incentive to anyone who has rightfully NOT earned it. I find it very interesting that our City Manager, who also served as the previous Redevelopment Director, will be receiving an increase to his pay and benefits from the very Councilmember McIntyre who has received a 100% recommendation on all redevelopment projects that came before Mr. Chung. I especially find it distasteful that during the 11th Hour of the last day for many of these officials present, that they turn their backs on the public’s trusts and decide to reward a friend who has cost the city millions in legal fees and try to prove a point that was baseless. This sounds like a play out of the Bell City Scandal. It is no wonder the residents of West Covina rose up during this last election cycle to dismantle

whatever mechanism of deceit was left in the Council. Residents of West Covina can now look towards a healthy brighter new future with the hopes of getting rid of a bitter taste in their mouth that has lasted for a number of years. I will continue to fight for our community’s right to be heard and prevent any shameful moves, such as the unlawful sale of the civic city hall property for the purpose to construct of new medical offices. Clearly, the memo did not get around disseminating the numerous challenges our community faces and continues to face this very day. This decision should be made and be left to the new city council, which recently won election. The people have spoken and it is time for the new blood to clean up the mess that was left behind, including increasing perks and salary increase to the new city manager,” Hernandez said.

Dr. John Chao has announced a groundbreaking patented procedure based on a knife-less, stitch-free and relatively pain-free method for repairing receding gums, called the Pinhole Surgical Technique® (PST®). Since there is no cutting or stitching, patients can expect virtually no pain and practically instant cosmetic improvement with almost no sign anything has been done.

PST is a dramatic improvement to the standard, more invasive and painful graft method which requires grafted gum from the roof of the mouth to the

Museum of the Holocaust. He graduated high school in June and became a full-time student at Exceptional Minds digital arts academy for preparing young people with autism for careers, which was co-founded by his mother Yudi Bennett to help Noah and others like him transition from high school into adulthood. “I wanted my son to have the same opportunities as everyone else,” said Yudi Bennett, now director of operations for the vocational school located in Sherman Oaks, California. Exceptional Minds opened in 2011 with just a handful of students and doubled its size and student population within two years

to accommodate a growing number of visually-gifted young people with autism who want what everyone else wants: meaningful careers doing what they do best. Nineteen-year-old Noah was one of three young artists at Friday’s conference to sit in on a memorable lunch session with Grandin, who was diagnosed with autism in the 1950s and, through persistence, developed her talents into a successful career as a livestock-handling equipment designer, one of very few in the world. Her detailed facility designs are used in handling half the cattle in the United States, and she has consulted for firms such as Burger King and Mc-

Donald's. For Friday’s conference, Grandin, who wore her customary cowboy shirt and kerchief, spoke of the challenges she faced and how individuals with autism can develop their visual talents into meaningful careers. During lunch with the three young adults with autism she was at times brutally honest and often funny as she gave the young artists advice, suggesting they treat art as a business and to let their work speak for itself. Noah walked away from Friday’s memorable lunch with two goals. “I need a stronger portfolio and need to learn how to run a business,” he said.

Following the robberies, some witnesses advised investigators that the suspect spent time wandering the aisles of the grocery store prior to committing the robbery. The Make It Quick Bandit had been linked to multiple robberies at U.S. Banks in San Pedro; Inglewood; Gardena; Carson; and Torrance. On several

occasions, law enforcement distributed bank surveillance photos to members of the media and several media outlets published, aired or posted the photos. The photos were also posted at the FBI’s local bank robbery site, www.labankrobbers.org. A recent tip called in to the FBI based on local publicity afforded this case led to the arrest of Porres. When investigators located Porres, he was in custody on an unrelated charge. Porres was transferred to

federal custody this morning. The investigation of the Make it Quick Bandit was conducted by detectives and officers with the Gardena Police Department; the Inglewood Police Department; the Los Angeles Police Department; the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department; the Torrance Police Department; and agents with the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Porres will be prosecuted by the United States Attorney’s Office.

If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code.
