The seven members of the 2014 Tournament of Roses Royal Court were announced Monday at Tournament House.

This coming weekend, MAFA will celebrate the 50th anniversary of the organization.

The organization will take over Library Park for the weekend with a wide variety of arts and crafts for all ages.

Ms. Mildred Lapson, a longtime Monrovian and world renowned artist working in oils, produced art exhibits and guest art lectures in the late 1950's and organized the first art festival in 1964. These art events lead to the formation of the Monrovia Arts Festival Association in 1965. Her vision was to enrich our lives by bringing fine arts to the community. This vision has continued through the efforts of many since that humble beginning.

Featured artist is Bill Hyatt,a longtime MAFA Member and Metal Sculptor. The show will include Art Demonstrations, Music, Entertainment and an authors’ section in cooperation with the Friends

On Tuesday, September 24, 2013, investigators from the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office obtained a felony arrest warrant for former Arcadia Police Officer Christian Blesch, 36, charging Grand Theft. The warrant was the result of an on-going criminal investigation into allegations that Blesch, a six-year employee of the department, feloniously stole money from the Arcadia Police Officers’ Association over a period of several months.

Taking place in the Mountain View Mausoleum and Cemetery in Altadena, “Wicked Lit” brings to life scary literature in even scarier surroundings, complete with songs and dances.

The arraignment of a Monrovia man who allegedly made a series of threats to several San Gabriel Valley locations recently has been postponed to Oct. 25 as the suspect’s attorney requested a continuation of the hearing at the West Covina Courthouse in Los Angeles County Superior Court on Friday.

This is the second postponement of the case as Gerardo Cortez, 26, was first set to be arraigned on Sept. 19.

Cortez – who has a

history of making false bomb threats – was arrested on Sept. 17 after allegedly calling in threats to several schools, a medical center, a shopping mall and a police agency – including Arcadia High School. The calls forced searches in several communities.

Better than swearing

Were some of the traffic laws changed one day while I was taking a nap? Exactly when did it become okay to make a left turn from the extreme right lane?

In one short week, I have seen two such incidents and heard of a third. The third happened to a dear friend of mine.

She was going north, he

was going south. Suddenly he decided to go east. He cut across the lanes, and wound up directly in front of her.

She broad-sided him.

That sounds to me like proof that, even though it seems to be happening with some regularity, it is not a good idea. Neither is trying to beat a red light, nor sliding through stop signs, nor darting from lane to lane.

Though I keep it under my breath, I do sometimes swear at stupid drivers.

I'm old. I'm not ancient, but I'm old. I'm old enough that when the doctor told me that taking care of myself could give me another ten years or more I thought, "Wow, that's a lot of gravy on the mashed potatoes of life."

You know, I want to enjoy that gravy. I went through a lot to get it and I don't want it gobbled up by some insignificant, hippobological, ancestaborical bonehead who thinks driving is a game and he/she is the only one on the road playing it. Whew!

Do you know what an insignificant, hippobological, ancestaborical bonehead is?

Neither do I. Neither does my poor bewildered spell check. But, don't you think it is a good sounding name for all those jerks in life who try to rob others of their gravy, no matter what their method of operaton?

Yep, I like it. That's what I'm going to call them. It's better than swearing.

Do Sierra Madre water rates really need to be raised?

Dear Editor: The Sierra Madre Government is in heavy discussions as to how much to raise the water and sewer rates on the people of the City. The discussion centers on the need to make the payments on the long-term debt of the Water Department and the Sewer Department, and the need to create additional financial reserves. The total amount for all of the City's long-term debt of six or seven loans adds up to approximately $13M per year, which is a lot, but not when you take into account that the City has an income of over $20M. The approach of the City is to "divide and conquer" by separating the water and sewer departments into a separate fund and comparing the income from the water bills against all the expense they can pile onto those departments. All of the City's income is put into one bank account which is called the General Fund..

They do not separate out other departments, such as the Administration for example. The cost of the Administration Department is greater than the $13M debt. Where does the Administrative in-

come come from and does the expense balance out? We think not. So why do they separate out the Water and Sewer departments? To put it simply, in order to create a socalled need for more income from the people.

Let's take a look at how the City's income can and will increase by leaps and bounds.

First, if they would stop talking about a water shortage and the people wasting water and talking conservation, then they could increase their water income by a million dollars and more. If they need to buy some water, which has not happened as of October 1, 2013, then so be it, and maybe we can save our dying plants.

Second, according to the City's numbers, the property taxes will increase by over $50M of assessment due to new construction last year, this will give the City over $1M of income from the property taxes.

Third, the number of property sales during 2013 is approaching 200 sales. This will give the City at least another $2M of property tax income.

Fourth, if the City choos-

es to let the number 1 Carter project get built by clearing out the obstacle course, then they can realize more than another $2M in income.

We have outlined over $6M of income, which is far more certain than raising the water rates. The only reason for increasing the water rates is the constant battle against the people for more and more money.

The City has already raised the rates 7-1/2% and they do not need to hurt the people more. They need to take off the supply restrictions and charge one rate that is based on the cost.Qf water, minus the long-term debt charges.

We implore the City Government to stop fabricating a crisis when none exists.

We ask the people to let their objections known and speaking out to the City Council.

If all else fails and they continue to press for water rate increases, then please be sure to vote NO, NO, NO when they send out the Notice. The best thing to' do if in doubt, do nothing. Sound like something you have heard before?

Diaper causes reader's rash response Dear Editor: I just cannot believe you printed an article about cloth diapers! It was a complete waste of time.

An important topic would be something like this: How many people realize that during the government shutdown, causing many to not receive paychecks, the members of Congress are still receiving theirs! This is outrageous. They’re still being paid for making a mess of things. I wonder how many of them would have voted for the shutdown if they knew they were not going to be paid either.

If your paper is hard up for topics to write about, why don’t you call people’s attention to helping the homeless – people and animals.

Food shelters need volunteers, pet food and adoption to good homes. Don’t write about cloth diapers: C. Johnson Editor’s Note: Dear C. Johnson: Thank you for your letter and we agree with you that homeless people and pets need our utmost care and attention. If you read this paper with any regularity, you’ll see frequent articles about both extremely important social issues. I bring your attention to the many kind deeds performed by animal rescue organizations like Lifeline for Pets – which we feature each week in an attempt to find homes for pets and educate the public of the importance of spaying and neutering. I also bring your attention to Union Station and the numerous non-profit agencies in Pasadena that help homeless persons

on our streets on a daily basis. We run no end of news on these fronts.

Whenever possible, we do features and profiles on those who help and those in need.

We take exception to your comments, however, regarding Fran Syverson’s recent column, regarding a cloth diaper.

In the first instance, Syverson is a talented, gifted writer and frequent columnist for our newspapers. The story to which you took such umbrage was a sincere personal reflection, concerning something very dear to her heart. Syverson eloquently defined the significance of something seemingly so innocuous as a vintage cloth diaper in her column - only a mother who has lost a child could conceivably express the consequence of said diaper with such dignity.

Your letter reminded of the old adage, “ Be quick to praise… slow to criticize.”

Reader supports Mildred Lapson as MAFA founder Dear Editor: After reading the article about the Monrovia Association of Fine Arts (MAFA), I felt that Mildred Lapson should be given credit for her involvement in the original group of the Fine Arts members. When I moved

to Monrovia in early 1964, Mildred Lapson came to my door promoting the arts festival and asking if I would be interested in joining a group of local art enthusiasts.

I don't know if any of the other people mentioned in the Beacon article went

door to door or went to meet new Monrovia residents promoting the arts in Monrovia, but Mildred did. I hope there are others who can verify Mildred's participation in the formation of MAFA who will speak up on her behalf.

Elder summit addresses baby boomer generation The boundaries between the neighboring cities of Monrovia and Duarte are becoming imperceptible. The YMCA, Target, Gold Line, Auto Rows, Restaurants and Monrovia Old Town bring residents across city limits without a thought about their location. These cities were born out of the same history, sharing the same foothills, same orchards and same challenges. Today, they face many of the same challenges facing California municipalities; doing more with less funding, addressing the need for redevelopment without the State funds they once had, and responding concretely to the changes in population.

As is happening across the San Gabriel Valley, who makes up the cities’ population is dramatically changing. Those over 65 are becoming the fastest growing segment of the cities of Monrovia and Duarte. As the wellknown Boomer generation retires, cities must adapt to a new kind of senior. Cities will either be proactive and plan for the changes, or they will be left only reacting to the changes. In an effort to lead change an Elder Summit was held this past July which resulted in a series of public and private sector recommendations for both cities and for local businesses

to use in planning. The Summit was convened by Damon Colaluca (former Santa Anita YMCA, Executive Director) and Reverend Douglas Edwards (the be.group Director of Church Outreach). Elected officials and city staff from the two cities, along with local industry leaders who serve residents over 65 years of age, came together for a day-long conference hosted by the Royal Oaks Community in Bradbury. Eric Dowdy, Vice President of Policy & Communications for LeadingAge California presented on demographic and policy issues.

The participants analyzed the data and strategized to bring focus to the most pressing needs for the cities and businesses.

The outcome of the Summit has been published and is now available for both cities and private sector businesses interested in addressing the growth of those over 65 years of age in Monrovia and Duarte.

Polyphagous Shot Hole Borer (PSHB) detected in Sierra Madre trees City staff has been alerted to a number of new tree wounds in public trees in the downtown and Canyon areas. Investigations and consultations with local arborists have concluded that the Polyphagous Shot Hole Borer (PSHB) has very likely found a host in the trees on the eastern side of Mary’s Market Parking Lot, and could very possibly be existing in a number of private trees in the area. The downtown trees, however, do not appear to have been infected by the pest at this time, and will continue to be closely monitored. Staff is arranging to conduct laboratory testing on various samples to further confirm the borer and test for its associated and destructive fungus.

The PSHB beetle and its associated fungus is a very destructive pest that has recently been found in parts of Los Angeles and Orange

Counties. It is also a very unique pest in the variety of tree species that have been shown to be hosts. At this time, known hosts include Sycamore (detected in Sierra Madre), Box Elder, Castor Bean, Avocado, Black Locust, English Oak, Liquidamber, Coast Live Oak, Persimmon, California Bay Laurel, Mimosa, Goldenrain, White Alder, Big Leaf Maple, Olive, and Wistaria Vine.

There are no known treatments for infected trees at this time. Staff is in contact with a number of agencies that are conducting experimental treatments.

Containment of the infestation is the priority right now.

Species show various signs of the PSHB; in general look for a newer wound and look for a very small hole that would indicate boring activity. In most cases loose bark can be

removed to locate the small hole. Avoid movement of any infested wood out of the area. It is very important to purchase firewood where you intend to burn it. Dead infested wood should be chipped and tarped for no less than 1 week before movement. Tree trimming and landscaping equipment should be sterilized after each location with 25% household bleach or 70% ethyl alcohol.

Additional information will be provided as often as possible, including possible treatment and containment recommendations as well as locations of infestations.

Governor signs two Holden business bills Governor Brown today signed two innovative business bills authored by Assemblymember Chris Holden (D-Pasadena) and designed to boost California’s economy.

AB 201 makes the Small Business Loan Guarantee program more accessible and user friendly and AB 250 expands opportunities for pioneering, start-up technology in California.

“I applaud the Governor for signing these bills which will play a pivotal role in making much needed capital more accessible to thousands of

small businesses so they can enlarge, create new jobs, and save the jobs of existing employees,” stated Assemblymember Holden.

AB 201 requires the Office of Small Business Advocate to include on its website information on the Small Business Loan Guarantee program’s (SBLGP) loan guarantees, direct lending, surety bond guarantees, and disaster loans.

AB 250 will expand the development of iHubs across California and develop more economic opportunities for start-up companies, promoting

greater collaboration between innovators and venture capital investment within the state.

“We want to put California in a position to cultivate and incubate young companies that are developing new technologies that will promote conservation and other public policy goals,” explained Assemblymember Holden.

“Establishing the iHub Accelerator Fund will allow the state to compete for grant funding from the federal government, private sector and foundations to encourage innovation.”

Former Arcadia cop arrested

Pasadena High track star is “quality runner” Sophomore Fiona Faulkner runs cross country and track at Pasadena High School for just one reason: Because she keeps getting better and better.

And she said this season is no exception.

“It’s pretty good,” Faulkner said about the current year. “It’s a better season than last year. It’s mostly because I have gotten a lot faster and am just feeling better about cross country.”

Faulkner said the lifestyle of being a runner is just a part of her now. And the grueling workouts just come with the territory.

“I have done a lot of training,” said Faulkner, who has been running track for five years while now on the Bulldog cross country team for her second year. “Our coach is having us do better workouts and get more into them and knowing more about them is good. We practice in the morning and then we have practices after school. We also go swimming sometimes in the morning.”

But then there is more

“We do all the stuff in the weight room,” she said.

“We do bench presses and squats. We put weights in our hands and do the running position. Coach always has us do different stuff. It’s always something different. And we do a lot of repeats. We do mile repeats and a lot of running. We do distance runs, too, to get distances in.

It’s a lot of running.”

Her coach, Leonard Buckner, had high praise for Faulkner.

“Fiona comes to Pasadena High School already trained,” Buckner said. “She’s worked with the CATS program. She’s a quality runner.”

Faulkner’s hard work has been paying off. While she ran the three-mile last year with a time of 19:44, this year she shaved several seconds off of it and got it down to 19:21.

But she said her heart is in track and field, not cross country.

“I like the environment

better (in track),” she said.

“Cross country is just kind of slow for me. You can kind of watch each other more in track. You are always just kind of around the way from each other.”

While Faulkner is looking to go to college in a couple more years, she said she would like to study the psychology of sports. But until then, she is just hoping she gets the opportunity to dance more, something she hasn’t done much of lately.

The bill moves the California Cultural and Historical Endowment (CCHE) from the State Library to the Natural Resources Agency and lays the foundation to launch a Snoopy special interest license plate to support California museums.

A campaign to put the beloved, comic beagle on license plates in California, and help the state’s museums at the same time, has been underway for several years.

Over 10,000 Californians have already expressed interest in purchasing a Snoopy special interest license plate by completing an online form at www.snoopyplate. com. A statewide marketing campaign will be launched soon to pre-sell Snoopy license plates and the De-

partment of Motor Vehicles (DMV) will begin issuing the plates upon receipt of 7,500 paid applications.

Each special license plate will feature a reproduction of an original Snoopy drawing by Charles Schulz, doing a happy dance (probably in anticipation of suppertime). The proceeds from sales of the Snoopy license plates will establish a competitive grant program to support our state’s great museums.

staff became aware of the allegations in March of this year, and soon thereafter relieved Blesch of duty, placing him on paid, administrative leave – pending the outcome of the L.A. County DA’s investigation into the thefts.

As of September 24, 2013, Blesch was no longer employed by the Arcadia Police Department.

The Arcadia police officer who allegedly charged more than $50,000 for personal items on a police association’s credit card pleaded not guilty to a felony count of grand theft

by embezzlement.

Blesch, 36, surrendered in a downtown Los Angeles courtroom in connection with the charge, which was filed Sept. 24, according to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office.

Blesch, who was elected treasurer of the Arcadia Police Officer Association in January 2011, allegedly used the association’s credit card to buy parts and accessories for his personal motorcycles and other items such as clothing, exercise equipment, shaving accessories and cigars.

According to the criminal complaint, the money was taken between Jan. 1, 2011, and March 14 of this year.

Blesch allegedly paid the monthly credit card bills through the association’s checking account.

He is due back in court Nov. 8, when a date is scheduled to be set for a hearing to determine if there is enough evidence to require him to stand trial.

The ex-officer faces up to three years behind bars if convicted of the charge, according to the District Attorney’s Office.

The Social Whirl NBC's parenthood premiere event spotlights 'Five Acres' work with children and families in crisis Season five of NBC’s popular drama Parenthood screened nearly two hours early for supporters and guests at a special event for FIVE ACRES, a leading child and family services agency on Thursday, Sept. 26. The evening was designed to call attention to the nonprofit’s mission and vision to provide a safe, loving and permanent family for every child.

The premiere event was envisioned largely by actor Sam Jaeger, who plays the loyal husband and adoptive stay-at-home dad, “Joel Graham,” on the show. “Each child matters.

That applies to the work of FIVE ACRES, and to each of us.” Of his vision for the event, he said, “I wanted to show how important this organization is to me.

Jaeger served as emcee for the event, introduced the cast and the season five premiere episode of Parenthood . Shakespeare Club hosts wine & cheese party at membership event The “Wine and Cheese Party” held at the Shakespeare Clubhouse, on September 4th, was a great success. It is an annual Membership Event for prospective new members to meet and mingle with the Shakespeare Club Members and tour the Villa. The party was set up on the terrace and was followed by a regular Club business meeting in the ballroom with a special program by the Covina Women’s Club Domestic Violence Action Coalition presented by “Kim Plater, Co-founder, DVAC”.

This was one of several events that the Shakespeare Club hosts and invites prospective members to attend. New members are accepted year round to the club.

Born in Detroit, Michigan on February 19, 1940, Smokey Robinson is second to only Berry Gordy in founding of Motown. A prolific songwriter, he is credited with 4,000 songs and 37 top 40 hits, including “Tears of a Clown,” “Tracks of My Tears” and “Love Machine.” Robinson also served as vice president of Motown records, writing and producing hits for groups such as The Temptations (“My Girl”) and Mary Wells (“My Guy”).

Known as the “”King

of Motown”, Smokey Robinson founded the R&B group The Miracles. He won his first Grammy in 1987.

In 2006, Robinson was selected to be a Kennedy Center Honoree for his contributions to the arts and American culture and received an honorary degree from Howard University. My purpose in embarking on this path is to be of service to the community. Service on the school board is not a political aspiration, but a passion for the betterment of our society on the “front lines”. Schools can- and should- serve as the portal for change in the life of the entire community.

On this subject, the California School Boards Association has identified five lines of action that school boards are entrusted by citizens in their community to accomplish. They are as follows: Setting Direction/ Provide Support for District Staff.

My educational background and strengths in collaboration and

communication will assist the board to create a vision that incorporates the wants and hopes of all stakeholders so that ALL students achieve their full potential. It will also inform the board’s dedication to transformative and useful teacher and administrator training.

Establish Effective and Efficient Structure I am a curious about and anxiously concerned with the academic excellence of all students.

Those attributes will contribute to the conversation as the board works to evaluate, attract and adopt excellent curriculum, teachers, and administrators.

Governor Brown signs immigrants driver licenses bill into law “This is only the first step.”

Gov. Jerry Brown signed a bill Thursday adding California to the list of states allowing immigrants living in the country illegally to obtain driver's licenses.

Immigrant advocates have long lobbied for the change in the state. The

licenses would carry a distinction on the front of the card that states the document may be used for driving, not as federal identification.

"This is only the first step," Brown said outside City Hall in Los Angeles

Thursday. "When a million people without their documents drive legally and with respect in the state of California, the rest of this country will have to stand up and take notice. No longer are undocumented people in the shadows."

Cortez is charged with six counts of making criminal threats and five counts of falsely reporting an emergency.

The complaint also alleges Cortez has a prior conviction of falsely reporting a bomb to an agency or business.

Using advanced technology and investigative techniques, key information was gathered by the team, and the suspect was arrested as he left his Monrovia home about 4 p.m. on Sept. 17.

Investigators continued the investigation, including serving a search warrant at

his home.

All policing agencies involved in this investigation took this very seriously. The nature of these criminal threats brought tremendous fear to students, faculty, parents, patients, and the community. It also drew a significant amount of policing resources away from other legitimate purposes. Incidents such as these will continue to be handled in a serious manner.

The incidents that led to this arrest was the caller said he had an AK-47 and threatened to shoot people.

Airtanker pilot uninjured after landing incident

Around 5:40 p.m. on Friday a CAL FIRE Airtanker experienced an incident upon landing at the Hemet Ryan Air Attack Base in Riverside County.

Though the aircraft, a Gruman S-2T, sustained damage, the pilot was not injured. The airtanker was returning from a small wildfire in the community of Good Hope in Riverside County.

The runway at Hemet Ryan Airport remains

closed while CAL FIRE works with the NTSB to investigate the incident.

"This serves as a stark reminder of the danger of our profession," said Chief Ken Pimlott, CAL FIRE director. "We must continue to keep public and firefighter safety a priority, especially during these Red Flag conditions."

As part of its air fleet CAL FIRE owns and maintains 23 S-2T Gruman air tankers.

Government may be shut down but not Arcadia High Constitution team

With the government making news lately for its inactivity, it might be a good idea to look at how it really is supposed to work.

Luckily, the Constitution team at Arcadia High School is already busy looking into this.

Studying in conjunction with the school’s AP Government class, Constitution team students take a deeper look at the document that is the framework for the federal government.

“It’s a program called ‘We the People: The Citizen and the Constitution,’” said Kevin Fox, advisor for the class. “It’s a national program.

There are thousands of schools across the country that have students engage in this program.

What it really does is engage high school seniors in a really rigorous thorough evaluation of the Constitution. Where does it come from? What are the ideas it’s built on?

What does it say? What does it mean? How is it applied?

Misapplied? Interpreted?”

Fox said this subject is

important for all students to study.

“They’re going to be citizens,” he said. “It’s crucial. If our American citizens don’t understand the Constitution that this government is running on, they’re not going to be effective. Democracy demands knowledgeable citizens. A really rigorous citizens’ civic education is vital.”

He added the curriculum his class uses is very well rounded.

“What I like about this particular program is it has a text that serves as the core,” Fox said. “We go way beyond that. It’s a very inquisitive approach. Every lesson title is a question.

Every section within a lesson has a question. There are questions in advance of the lesson. There are questions after the lesson. Not just recall questions, but interpretive questions, application questions. It gives kids the opportunity to ask questions but also learn maybe there isn’t a single right answer, especially when we get into

interpretive issues.

“The kids need to be engaged in really high level thinking and challenged on what they think and to build up arguments.”

Arcadia Council Member Gary Kovacic has been helping with the program since 1995. He said the program does what it is supposed to do.

“It’s a wonderful program,” Kovacic said.

“It’s been a wonderful experience for the students and the teachers and coaches. Hopefully, they’ve gained an appreciation for the Constitution and the masterful document that it is.”

He added the students get a lot out of the program, “They get a sense of volunteerism and civic virtue,” he said. “There are certain things the government can do and can’t do. They get to interact with adults and have a practical application of the Constitution that happens every day in our lives, and hopefully they gain an appreciation for the profession of teaching.”

or haunted house. We fit the show to the space and the time.”

“You’re going to see H.B. Lovecraft’s ‘The Lurking Fear’ while being chased through the crypts of the mausoleum by a monster and it’s either you or him.

You’re going to see ‘The Legend of Sleepy Hollow,’ which exists in a lot of literate and Washington Irving’s words. You encounter the headless horseman in a

real cemetery. And then you’re going to see Sir Arthur Doyle’s ‘The New Catacomb’ when you’re actually in the crypts of a mausoleum going deeper and deeper. Then we have spoken words and dances all from Edgar Allen Poe.” Josephson said more than half of the remaining performances are already sold out and they are not for children under 13.

Latino Heritage Parade and Festival Saturday, Oct. 19 The 15th annual Latino Heritage Parade and “jamaica” (celebration) will be held on Saturday, Oct. 19, 2013, produced

by Latino Heritage, a local organization that celebrates the history, arts, and culture of Latinos in the greater Pasadena area. This free, fun-filled, family event—cosponsored by the City of Pasadena—begins with a colorful, music-filled parade at 11:00 a.m., followed by the jamaica festival from noon to 4:00 p.m.

More than 1,500 children, families and residents are expected to attend the parade and other festivities.

The parade begins on Los Robles Avenue, at Howard Street, turns onto Washington Boulevard and ends at La Pintoresca Park, 1355 N. Raymond Ave. The postparade festival is also at La Pintoresca Park.

Monrovia Association of Fine Arts key goals are to promote local artists and to provide mentoring opportunities to encourage our young people to experience art and hopefully develop the future leadership of MAFA. The active members have a great deal of energy and passion concerning the visual fine arts. Membership is open to artists and nonartists alike. We need nonartists who are skilled in organizational duties to continue our growth. MAFA has had a renaissance in the last 10 or so years as more artists have come to the area which has become an artist location or place.

The organization has the potential for even greater growth with our focus on a new 5-year plan.

Maryknoll Sister will share her experiences of 40 years on the Marshall Islands Sister Joan Crevcoure, author of “Ocean Pathways” will share some of the stories from her book at an Author’s Event at the Monrovia Public Library this Monday, October 14 at 7pm. The book recounts the experiences of this Maryknoll nun living with and working among the inhabitants of some of the outer islands of the Marshalls.

This Green Bay. Wisconsin native joined the Maryknoll order in 1946 and said she almost felt guilty about her first “posting:” Hawaii. There she completed her college education and earned her

Master’s Degree. In 1961 she and another Maryknoll were sent to the Marshall Islands, but not to the capital or another of the more developed areas.

They went to the outer islands where there was no electricity, and no facility at which they were to work.

Asked what their first priority was, Sister Crevcoure responding, “First we needed to find somewhere to live and then what was needed.” What the people wanted most was to learn to speak English, she said.

At first, the two nuns slept on the floor of someone’s hut. She said they were never far from the

people who came to appreciate them as they shared life together, good and bad.

What food the residents had, they shared with the sisters. When they became ill, so did the sisters (medication eventually reached them by air drip from the local U.S. Military).

With so few amenities (remember there was no electricity and contact with the “outside world” was via shortwave) what was it she missed most: Packer Games. Green Bay is still in her blood.

Governor signs all 10 of Santa Anita Park opens the gates to the most Liu’s bills passed this year Uber-Rificoktoberfest on Saturday - October 12 Governor Brown has signed all 10 of Sen. Carol Liu’s bills passed by the Legislature this year.

Liu, D- La Cañada Flintridge, authored legislation to help Caltrans sell state-owned houses along a proposed State Route 710 extension, streamline student testing in schools, promote arts education, and enhance interagency collaboration at the Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy.

The Governor has until Sunday (October 13, 2013) to sign or veto legislation sent to him this year.

“I look forward to authoring more bills that improve the lives residents of the 25th Senate District, help improve our public schools, and assist our most needy citizens,” said Liu, Chair of the Senate Education Committee.

More details are available on Liu’s Website at http:// sd25.senate.ca.gov/. Liu’s signed bills included: SB 116 extends the Emergency Food Assistance Program check-off on state income tax forms. These taxpayer donations generated nearly $350,000 for food banks last year.

SB 238 allows the Supervisor of the Angeles National Forest to vote as a Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy Board member on matters related to projects located within or affecting the Forest.

SB 247 eliminates unnecessary testing of second graders and requires the California Department of Education to find assessments in English and mathematics that are more relevant to the learning abilities of these young students.

SB 416 authorizes CalTrans to fast track sales of surplus properties purchased decades ago for a planned State Route 710 extension Los Angeles, Alhambra, South Pasadena, and Pasadena.

The homes will never be needed to make room for an extension, and the sales will generate revenue for local transportation projects.

SB 571 and SB 789 will help the California Arts Council continue raising funds with an Arts special interest license plate and create a new state income tax check off for the “Keep Arts in Schools!” fund.

Sunday, September 29: Around 5:20 p.m., an officer responded to Sephora at the Santa Anita Mall, 400 South Baldwin Avenue, in regards to a theft report. An adult suspect concealed merchandise inside her purse and exited the store without making payment. The 22-year-old Korean female was arrested and transported to the Arcadia City Jail for booking. Just after 11:10 p.m., an officer located a suspicious vehicle with one occupant parked on Goldring Road, east of Peck Road. A vehicle search revealed the driver was in possession of marijuana and cocaine. The 43-year-old Hispanic male was arrested and transported to the Arcadia City Jail for booking.

Monday, September 30: At about 1:36 a.m., an officer conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle for making an illegal turn on First Avenue near Huntington Drive. Upon contact with the driver, the officer detected an odor of alcohol emitting from his breath and person. An investigation revealed the driver was under the influence

with a blood alcohol level greater than 0.08 percent.

The 43-year-old Black male was arrested and transported to the Arcadia City Jail for booking. Around 5:40 p.m., an officer responded to the Arcadia Police Department front counter regarding a theft report. The victim explained her Louis Vuitton purse was stolen while she was eating at the food court at the Santa Anita Mall, 400 South Baldwin Avenue. She placed her purse on the chair next to her and noticed it missing a few minutes later.

She had no idea who took her property.

Grand Theft Auto September 16 at 3:47 p.m., a vehicle was reported stolen from the 200 block of North Mountain. The vehicle, a 1971 Austin Mini Cooper, was parked in front of the victim’s home. All keys are accounted for and no one had permission to use or take the vehicle. The investigation is continuing.

Suspect in San Gabriel Valley Schools, Mall, & Hospital Threats Arrested by Five-Agency

Team On September 17, the collaborative efforts of the Arcadia, Covina, and Monrovia Police Departments, the Federal Bureau of Investigations, and the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department resulted in the identification, location and capture of the suspect who phoned in criminal threats to school campuses and hospitals in the San Gabriel Valley this past week.

Driving Under the Influence / Possession of Drug Paraphernalia / Destroying Evidence – Suspect Arrested September 18 at 1:02 a.m., an officer on patrol in the area of Shamrock and Huntington observed a driver throw a can of beer out the window of his vehicle. The officer stopped the vehicle and an assisting officer on the passenger side of the vehicle saw the female passenger attempt to hide a methamphetamine pipe in her hand. When the officer attempted to take the glass pipe, she threw it on the ground and broke it.

Through investigation, the driver was determined to be under the influence and was arrested. The female passenger was arrested for possession of drug paraphernalia, destroying evidence and resisting arrest.

Saturday September 28 At 8:45am a resident was driving her vehicle south on Michillinda Avenue from Sierra Madre Boulevard. When she attempted to slow her ve-

hicle for the down grade she noticed her brakes were not working. She attempted a left turn onto Ramona Avenue in an attempt to slow the vehicle. By then, the vehicle was travelling too fast for the turn, ran off the roadway and into some shrubbery on the southeast corner. The driver was uninjured and no other objects were damaged.

Monday September 30 A traffic collision occurred in the downtown area when a vehicle struck a pedestrian

in the crosswalk. Shortly after 5pm, a vehicle was being driven west on Sierra Madre Boulevard from Baldwin Avenue. The driver stated she was blinded by the setting sun and did not see anyone in the crosswalk by the Chase Bank.

The impact caused the pedestrian to land on the hood of the car then roll off onto the roadway. The pedestrian sustained serious injury to his legs, hips and head and was transported to Arcadia Methodist Hospital for treatment.
