El Monte residents were invited on Sept. 5 to a Scoping Session for a Walmart Superstore that is proposed for construction at 4000 Arden Avenue, near the intersection with Valley Boulevard. The meeting was held at the Grace Black Auditorium, led by the City’s Director and Assistant Director of Economic Development, Damien Arrula and Minh Thai.

The proposed development is an 182,429-square-foot Supercenter to be built on a 15.41-acre site. The store will offer general merchandise, grocery/ bakery/deli, off-sale of

Sheriff’s deputies directed anxious parents and guardians to pick up their loved ones at the Best Buy parking lot Central and Mountain avenues but not all parents complied.

Many parents, angered by the lack of information provided to them, attempted to get near the school entrance on Central via Evergreen but were advised by Monrovia officers to stay clear of the scene.

By Dorothy Denne While eating breakfast at my favorite breakfast haunt the other day, I overheard part of a conversation between two men in the booth behind me. Of course I couldn't see them but I can easily guess about how old at least one of them is. He was confessing to the other that he has become consciously aware that he has knee joints and he has discovered arthritis strength aspirin.

I can relate to that.

When I'm out walking and come to a very high curb my mind says, "Nothing

to it." My knees yelp, "Oh yeah! Easy for you to say."

This sets me to thinking about what useful creatures our knees are. As Tots, we find that Daddy's knees are great for bouncing and riding horsey on. Mommy's are wonderful for hiding behind when other adults want to pat us on the head or pinch our cheeks, tell us how cute we are and how big we're getting.

Our own knees come in handy for falling on.

They are closer to the ground than our heads and not quite so much ouch.

As growing youngsters, we discover that a grandparent's knee can be a wonderful thing to sit beside and listen to stories. We can lay our head on it and feel the love passing through on its trip from heart to heart.

Then as teens, our knees serve us well as knockers and tremblers when we

face the many challenges of growing up. As adults, we can use them to kneel on to pray for the strength needed to face the many challentes of being grown.

Finally comes the real age of awareness. It doesn't really come suddenly. It just seems that way. Somewhere, late 50s to mid 60ish, our knees begin to talk to us in their own way.

They snap. They creak.

They groan. Sometimes they display outright rebellion when we try to bend them.

They bring new friends into our lives as we grow intimate with Arthur Itis and Ben Gay. They are now playing a conscious, dominant role in our lives.

All we can say is, "Just watch it, knees.

Don't get too sassy. With modern technology, you know, YOU CAN BE REPLACED."

Residents still mad as hell about Sierra Madre Water They're not gonna take it anymore…

Dear Editor: On the evening of August 14th the City administration put on their latest show to try to convince the people that what they are doing, both physically and financially, are correct. We have no idea where they studied economics, but it certainly wasn't the school of hard knocks.

They used the comparison of a person buying a home for $450,000, with a $90,000 down payment, and a loan of $360,000, and then said if you paid a regular payment for 30 years, then you would have paid the sum of $620,000 on that loan.

Anyone that knows about real estate financing knows that if you pay the regular payment, you will pay two times the original amount or $720,000 during a 20 year payment schedule, and if you pay for 30 years, you will pay three times the original loan amount or $1,170,000 by the time you pay off the mortgage. That amount plus the $90,000 down payment brings the total $1,270,000, for a $450,000 house. Is this smart economics, or is it the unwise use of the people's money?

This says nothing about when you sell, the IRS uses the $450,000 figure and the end

amount over that is taxable capital gains.

They also used the same thinking to finance vehicles and wind-up paying two or three times the original purchase price. Is that wise use of the people's monies or should they change their ways and start to prepay on any of other loans of record and by no means should they refinance, since that move costs money too!

Moving on, they also stated that the people have reduced the use of water by 27%, year over year, during the month of August 2013.

This further reduces the revenue to the City, now isn't that self -defecting?

They also put a tight control on all of the people and no one was allowed to speak. They said to write your questions on a 3 x 5 card and they would answer the questions, during the break times of their presentation.

What they did was a different story. They only answered something like 10%, or less, of the questions that were asked and postponed the rest of the questions, and didn't let the people talk. Another observation was why do they separate

the water and sewer department and the Police and Fire departments from the rest of the City's departments?

Why don't they separate out the Administration, Public Works, and Parks & Recreation, the Development and the Library and tell us how the revenues match up with the expenses in those departments? In business, all the monies go into one account to pay all the bills and are not segregated, not even in the bookkeeping. The way the City operates, there is not one person in town that will live to see the City in physical and financial order. How firmly must a person say, to change your ways and clean up the way the City operates?

Here is an idea, why doesn't the City Council and Administrators invest their retirement savings with the City Government? After all, the City proved that they know best how to manage and manage the money they receive from the property owners. If they run out of money, then they can just raise the taxes and fees.

In the military, they say "Shape up or ship out?" Do you get the message?

Town Hall Meeting in Temple City - Sept. 26 The Mayor and City Council will hold a “ designyour-own Town Hall Meeting “ on Thursday, Sept.

Newborn baby found dead in South El Monte Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Homicide detectives are at a residence in the 2600 block of Chico Avenue, South El Monte, to investigate the circumstances surrounding the death of a newborn boy. At time of press, the investigation was

It's Raining Daffodils

By Fran Syverson “It isn’t raining rain, you know, it’s raining daffodils!”

First came a call from friends in Whittier. “Nancy’s daffodils are so beautiful, and we can see them from the window where we eat our breakfast.”

Then another call, and another. Friends and relatives throughout the Southland were enjoying golden daffodils, a last gift from our daughter. They had received them as they departed from Nancy’s memorial service. Each daffodil bulb was placed in a tiny cellophane bag. Tied to the bag were a pink ribbon and a small card with a large pink ‘N’ on the front.

Inside were the words, “A gift from Nancy…For you to plant and remember her smile, year after year.”

Her smile—it was so much a part of Nancy that people mentioned it, time after time, when they spoke about her, both at the memorial service and in personal sharing. It was a smile that shone throughout her life, and it stayed with her through all the miserable months of her illness.

It was when she was ill that she told us of her wish that daffodils be given to her friends. For Nancy, they symbolized the potential in all living things. Especially young people: her own son and daughter…her beloved baby grandson…her students…and later, the youth with whom she worked at a museum’s educational/ outreach programs. As the “Hymn of Promise” we sang in church that day says, “In the bulb there is a flower…” Nancy saw that flower in every young person in her life.

And now, the phone calls kept coming. From Irvine, Laguna Woods, La Habra, Yucaipa, Sierra Madre, Redlands, nextdoor neighbors. From Pacific Palisades where “girl-friends” had planted several bulbs in her memory while attending their annual church ladies’ retreat, a gathering near and dear to Nancy’s heart.

Finally, the dozen daffodils I’d saved for myself began to bloom. Now it was up to me to remember her smile, year after year.

As her mom, I’d been

privileged to share lots of those smiles. They floated through the photo album of my mind. The ballerina birthday party with 5-year-old girls twirling about in homemade tutus.

Prom night. Church choir.

Campfires on our High Sierra backpacking treks.

Exchanging vows with her beloved. Her newborns cradled in her arms. Holding praying mantises or snakes to acquaint young museum visitors with nature’s marvels. Nancy, smiling, smiling, smiling.

Smiles to greet family and co-workers who came to her rehab unit to celebrate her 59th birthday party that she herself had planned, knowing that it was her chance to say her good-byes. And finally, from her hospital bed, how her beautiful brown eyes and those smiles greeted us whenever we came to be with her!

Of course clouds had sometimes darkened Nancy’s life. The greatest of these was the moment when her doctor confirmed the diagnosis of ALS, and she burst into rain-tears, knowing all the daffodils she would never live to see, the grandchildren she would never hug.

“And when you see clouds upon the hill…” The familiar song promises that clouds will bring “crowds of daffodils.” Not for her, she knew.

Nancy had always truly lived her philosophy: “I think you can decide whether to be happy, and I’ve decided I will.” Even through the clouds, she seemed to see the daffodils.

In everyone she met, she saw the flower they were or could become. Little wonder, then, that she chose daffodil bulbs as symbolic gifts to all her loved ones.

So now, with phone calls coming in from friends who were enjoying her daffodils in bloom and remembering her smile, I found myself paraphrasing the old melody. Wherever Nancy’s friends were, indeed, it “…wasn’t raining rain at all. ’Twas raining daffodils.”

Charges filed regarding illegal boarding house operation

Chinese journalist Shi Tao released after serving eight years and six months Shi Tao, a journalist in China who was sentenced in 2005 to ten years imprisonment for sending to a foreign web site instructions he received from the government about how journalists should act prior to the 15th anniversary of the Tiananmen massacre, has been released. PEN International announced today.

At the time, Shi Tao's case reverberated around the world as it clearly violated journalistic freedom. While Yahoo! claimed that China Yahoo! must follow China's law, it was in fact Hong Kong Yahoo! who gave out the IP address of Shi Tao as the one who sent out the information.

Hong Kong has an ordinance on privacy. The information Hong Kong Yahoo! gave out was not ordered by Hong Kong's court as the ordinance required. In fact there was no police order at all.

In 2007, a hearing was held in Hong Kong and the Hong Kong Commissioner on Privacy, Roderick B. Woo, was called to testify by the Hong Kong's legislature.

the only NGO to attend the hearing. Woo claimed that since Shi Tao's account was a commercial account, there was no violation of privacy, to which legislator Audrey Eu countered that the fact that Shi Tao was sentenced proved that such privacy had been violated. Hong Kong Yahoo! did not appear at the hearing and merely sent out a letter denying any violation on their part.

During a 2006 US Congressional hearing, Yahoo! general counsel Michael Callahan claimed that Yahoo! China had to cooperate with the government and further claimed that Yahoo! China

had no knowledge of the purpose of China's request. A police document from China subsequently revealed that China had requested Hong Kong Yahoo! to provide the information and clearly stated the reason for such a request. Jerry Yang, then CEO of Yahoo!, apologized to Shi Tao's mother during the second US Congressional hearing held on the case in late 2007.

A suit was filed against Yahoo! to which Yahoo! settled out of court.

Burger Continental gets green light from Health Dept.

After a couple of weeks of closure albeit with a lot of local publicity, the owners of Burger Continental have now been given the green light to open their restaurant again.

Burger Continental, a Mediterranean restaurant in Pasadena, had served its last supper for a while after Dr. Eric Walsh, Director of the Pasadena Health Department’s inspectors discovered several grave

health code violations during an inspection of the long time facility on South Lake last week.

An apparent “routine inspection” on Aug. 28, found health department officials citing the restaurant for having cockroaches, unsafe food temperatures well above the standard 41 degrees, improper cleaning and sanitation, “gross contamination of food preparation surfaces,

improper disposal of liquid waste and improper hand washing.”

In addition to the food contamination and vermin, officials also found structural violations such as a resurfaced floor which needs immediate attention. Walk in freezers also has stagnant water.

There were also numerous holes in walls and ceilings.

The extensive list of violations also included mildew on their ice machine.

On Thursday Sept 5, the city of Pasadena filed a criminal complaint charging two people with 192 misdemeanor charges in connection with illegal boarding home operations at 389 Ashtabula Street.

The criminal complaint that was filed by the City AttorneyCity Prosecutor’s Office includes 96 counts each against Dave Wohlman and Felicia Edelman based on their roles as operators of the illegal boarding home known as “Uncle Dave’s Sober Living.”

The charges span illegal operations from April 9, 2013 through Aug. 29, 2013, and include violations of the California Fire Code and the Pasadena Municipal Code. The two owners are being notified of the charges and will be noticed to appear in court on September 12, 2013.

The charges were filed in the Pasadena Branch of Los

Angeles County Superior Court.

The charges were filed this week after City officials served an inspection warrant on Thursday morning, August 29, 2013 at the Ashtabula address.

The inspection warrant was approved by the Los Angeles County Superior Court for service without prior notice and also allowed for forcible entry into the premises. Pasadena Police Department Officers secured the premises and kept tenants outside while the inspection occurred.

No forced entry occurred.

Multiple life-safety issues in violation of the state Fire Code were discovered during the Aug. 29 inspection which also found beds for as many as 27 occupants inside the two-story, single-family residence.

During the Aug. 29 inspection, several tenants were interviewed and videotaped while

others were interviewed without being on camera.

The property was referred to the City’s C.R.A.S.H. (Community Resources Against Substandard Housing) Team in June, 2012 after other efforts for code compliance failed.

The C.R.A.S.H. Team was unsuccessful in getting the owners to bring the property into compliance with state and local laws.

The C.R.A.S.H. Team is a multi-departmental team from Fire, Code Enforcement, Building Safety, Health, Police, City Prosecutor and the Humane Society who handle “problem locations” with two or more potential violations under state or local regulations. The team is committed to preserving the quality of life in the City and the safety and security of all residents through enforcement of applicable laws.

Bill honoring civil rights leader Cesar E. Chavez passes senate floor Assemblymember Roger Hernandez (D-West Covina) announced today that AB 34 passed the State Senate Floor with a 32-2 vote. AB 34 establishes Nuestra Señora Reina de La Paz (La Paz) in Kern County as a state historic landmark. La Paz is the burial site and the home of Civil Rights Leader Cesar E. Chavez.

“We are one step closer in realizing a goal that was forgotten for too long.

California should have been at the forefront of designating La Paz, the burial and home of the great

Civil Rights leader Cesar E. Chavez, many years ago.

AB 34 properly honors the work of a Latino leader who pushed for justice, dignity and job protection for farm workers,” stated Hernandez.

On October 8, 2012 President Obama declared La Paz a National Historic Landmark. The designation honoring a Latino is the first since the 1700s. La Paz covers 187 acres of eastern Kern County, California. The site is significant as the headquarters of the United Farm Workers of

America (UFW). From the site, Cesar E. Chavez met with public officials, labor leaders, community organizations and industry representatives as a voice for the disenfranchised and the less fortunate.

“I will continue working with all my colleagues in the Legislature to ensure La Paz deserves the proper recognition on the state level, since the federal government has officially recognized the unique historical significance of La Paz,” concluded Hernandez.

After hours of police officers checking from room to room and numerous area police agencies assisting, no suspect was found and the threat deemed over and all road blocks cleared shortly after 6PM. At Santa Fe Middle School, the last of the students was moved off campus just before 5p.m Santa Fe Middle School

had about 640 students in grades six through eight in the 2012-13 school year, according to state records.

In recent weeks, local agencies such as Los Angeles County Sherriff and the Pasadena Police dept. have had extensive “live shooter” training sessions to help officers better deal with such a stressful scenario as a school shooting.

Lynn Rabin is a retired LAUSD teacher. Through her local small business Senior to Senior, she now works with people— specializing in those of us over 50—who want to learn to use our computers better. “I have lots of students in their seventies and eighties who were given a new computer by their grandchildren,” says Lynn with a smile. “They want to learn how to turn the thing on and off without breaking it, and they want to be able to use email and sort family photos.”

She realized several years ago that as the digital age arrived, elder generations were being unintentionally left out.

Getting older people comfortable with

Sierra Madre Woman's Club begins year with Membership Tea Sierra Madre Woman’s Club, celebrating their 106th year, welcomes women throughout the area to attend their annual Membership Tea on Wednesday, September 25, 1:00 p.m. for an afternoon of enjoyment and to learn about all the club has to offer its members. This will be held in Essick House, their historic Craftsman clubhouse, 550 W. Sierra Madre Blvd. in Sierra Madre.

“King of Motown” Smokey Robinson to headline Crystal Ball 201 3 Music legend Smokey Robinson will headline Methodist Hospital Foundation’s 24th Crystal Ball October 19 at the Pasadena Convention Center.

As one of Motown Records biggest stars and inhouse songwriters, few artists have done as much to create the template for modern pop music. Smokey delivered a string of hits with his band, The Miracles, and wrote for many other Motown stars, including The Temptations, Marvin Gaye and The Four Tops. South Pasadena Arts Council introduces Sparc Lab! The South Pasadena Arts Council (SPARC) is pleased to announce a new program, SPARC Lab—a series of bi-monthly meetings designed to bring together, visual, performing and media artists, writers, designers, art lovers and those working in the industry with the goal to provide inspiration, collaboration, networking, and professional development opportunities in a fun and casual environment.

SPARC Lab will be held the 15th of every other month and will feature speakers, panel discussions, presentations and special workshops on a wide range of topics and activities in the visual, performing and media arts, such as the business of art, working with galleries/collecting, art publishing, and studio tours. SPARC Lab will not only celebrate South Pasadena’s prolific cultural community, but also include

participation by artists and cultural organizations beyond its borders.

SPARC Lab is free for SPARC members and $7 for non-members. Special participatory workshops may have additional costs.

Two such vigils were held locally. One in Sierra Madre, another in Pasadena Monday evening.

The progressive organization in conjunction with concerned area citizens held signs which read “Another War/ Syriasly” in Pasadena and some held a message for Rep. Judy Chu saying “ Rep Chu NO on Syria” in Sierra Madre’s Kersting Court.

In Pasadena over 150 people chanted peacefully for no military intervention outside Paseo Colorado. A lone protestor countered the majority and called for immediate military strikes.

During the Sierra Madre vigil, organized by Jeff Rudisill, approximately 12 people stood silently on the corner of Baldwin and Sierra Madre to get their message across. The vigil lasted for approximately two hours.

The Pasadena protest coordinated by Patrick Briggs said ““Our message is very simple. We are demanding that congressional representatives, Judy Chu and Adam Schiff, vote ‘No’ on any potential congressional legislation that would authorize military strikes on Syria,” said Patrick Briggs, one of the organizers and a member of “democracy in action” group

Meanwhile, Pasadena Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA), a senior Member of the Intelligence Committee, released a statement on September 2 stating that Syria President Bashar al-Assad must be held accountable, but Schiff is clearly undecided on a military response.

Mount Sierra College plans new campus on state land in Monrovia Monrovia City Council voted to support Mt. Sierra College’s plan to build on the vacant land on the Southwest intersection of Myrtle and Huntington Drive at the last city council meeting.

Mt. Sierra College is currently located on the Northeast corner of the same intersection on 101 East Huntington Drive.

However, council ultimately chose the College plans.

The new campus could feature a three-story, 32,000

square foot environmentally green building, including classrooms, auditorium, bookstore, offices, and much more.

The college’s current lease expires in two years and they plan to complete construction by 2015.

Hunger strike in California prisons ends “Thursday inmates ended their hunger strike protesting the state’s inhumane practice of prolonged solitary confinement after state officials responded to their demands for reform. Inmate advocates announced that the promise of legislative hearings was one reason to end the strike. “It is estimated approximately 80,000 prisoners across the

country are held in solitary confinement, with nearly 12,000 held in California.

California is one of many states that allows for inmates to live in solitary confinement indefinitely.

We urge lawmakers to make our state a leader by holding the promised legislative hearings and restricting this inhumane practice.

“Those suffering

from mental illness or developmental disabilities should not be placed in solitary confinement and those who begin to show signs of a mental breakdown should be removed. Solitary confinement should only be used as a last resort. Prisoners should not have to go on hunger strikes and risk their lives to receive humane treatment.”

Downtown Arcadia businesses create ‘Community Benefit District’ In an effort to attract more people to their area of Arcadia, downtown business owners recently voted to create a Community Benefit District, according to a published report.

This means each business owner would pay extra in property taxes that would go into a fund to better market the area to customers and visitors, the report said.

The idea of the district passed with 60 percent in favor of creating it, the report said. In fact, in the first year alone the district is expected to raise around $117,000 for public relations efforts and beautifying the area, which is comprised of the area of St. Joseph Street to the north, California Street to the south, Second Avenue to the east and Santa Anita Avenue to the west.

By SHEL SEGAL The district is using what is called a property-based business improvement model – like in Old Pasadena – which bases the funding on property values and taxes, as opposed to Old Town Monrovia’s which is based on sales amounts, the report said.

With the Gold Line Station at North First Avenue and East Santa Clara Street scheduled to open in 2015, efforts to help brand the area have been fast-tracked, the report said.

One of the spearheads of the effort – Matt McSweeney, owner of Matt Denny’s Restaurant on Santa Anita Avenue – said the money will really come in handy.

“We’re hoping to prepare for the Gold Line, revitalize the downtown a little bit and the money that

funds this every year can go to cleaning up the streets a little more,” McSweeney said.

McSweeney said it has taken three years to create the district. He added he is hopeful over time the money will be spent wisely.

“There’s a bunch of little things we can do,” he said. “In the 25-year plan there’s room for mixeduse construction. There are people already inquiring about that.”

In addition, McSweeney said the funds will bring much-needed change to downtown Arcadia.

“In the next five to six years, this place will be a lot different than it looks today,” he said. “The thing was just getting the owners on board.”

Citrus College to host its second nursing assistant program information session - Sept. 19 Citrus College will offer a second, eight-week Nursing Assistant Program beginning Tuesday, October 22, 2013.

Six costly beneficiary mistakes to avoid If you’ve ever spent time working through your estate plan with a professional, you know how important it is to update your beneficiaries. Failing to do so can result in costly mistakes – for you and your loved ones. Here are six big mistakes that can easily be avoided with a bit of proactive planning: Mistake #1 – Not naming a beneficiary Ensure you have listed beneficiary designations on all of your retirement accounts. If you don’t name a beneficiary and your estate becomes your beneficiary rather than a relative or loved one, your relative can lose their ability to use “stretch” payouts based on their life expectancy. This means that the ability to retain tax-advantaged status for the assets is lost and the probate process cannot be avoided.

Mistake #2 – Not listing contingent beneficiaries or contemplating disclaimers Your spouse or partner is likely your primary beneficiary for most accounts, but if he or she passes away first and no contingent beneficiaries are listed, it’s comparable to having no beneficiary designation. If you both die at the same time, funds go into probate – a process most families want to avoid. Naming contingent beneficiaries also gives the primary beneficiary the option to execute a qualified disclaimer so some assets can pass to “next-in-line” beneficiaries. For example,

a primary beneficiary may not wish to claim the assets because of tax implications, and prefer instead they pass on to another beneficiary.

Mistake #3 – Lacking specifics in beneficiary designations You may list “children” as your beneficiaries, but including specific names may be more appropriate – especially if you’re part of a blended family. Many states won’t include or recognize stepchildren when the word “children” is listed. Another risk of vagueness is that a family member you’ve lost contact with may enter the picture and try to claim a piece of your remaining assets. Note that listing specific names makes it even more critical that beneficiary designations are updated when major life events happen that require names be added or subtracted. Also consider consulting with a qualified legal professional, as these circumstances can become complex.

Mistake #4 – Failing to Keep Designations Up To Date Beneficiary designations override your will, so it’s crucial to keep them up to date. You may need to update your beneficiary designations every few years due to life changes or if beneficiaries have died or your relationship with them has changed. This is particularly applicable if you’ve gone through a divorce or remarried. If your ex-spouse inadvertently remains the designated

beneficiary of an account, he or she may have the upper hand if the case winds up in court.

Mistake #5 – Failing to Keep Beneficiary Designation Forms on File Keep copies of updated beneficiary designation forms on file. In this age of mergers-and-acquisitions, the records of an acquired custodial company can potentially be lost or destroyed when a new firm assumes ownership.

Without a verifiable form to prove beneficiary status, the “default” provision of the plan applies, which typically may be phrased as “spouse first, if living; if not, then the estate.”

Mistake #6 – Not considering the financial or emotional readiness of beneficiaries The money that designated beneficiaries receive from IRAs or qualified plans is unrestricted in most cases.

You can’t control who gets what amount of money or when, nor limit how money is used unless restrictions are put in place in advance. One restriction is naming a trust as the beneficiary and drafting terms which stipulate when specific individuals receive their share of the accounts.

Trusts are often used in cases where a beneficiary is unable to manage his or her own financial affairs, lacks financial responsibility or in complex family situations.

Estate planning isn’t the most enjoyable part of planning for your financial future, but it is crucial to

helping ensure that your assets are handled the way you desire after you no longer have control.

Beneficiary designations can be complex and differ depending on your situation. Consider working with a financial advisor who can help you update your beneficiaries on financial accounts and provide financial guidance through major life events.

La Salle defeats Pasadena 28-0 Coming off the bench in the second quarter, quarterback Will Pyburn sparked the La Salle High offense to a 28-0 defeat of visiting Pasadena High on Friday night in a nonleague game.

Pyburn completed seven of 11 passes for 126 yards and two touchdowns in the win. He said he was happy just to get the opportunity.

“I was ready,” the sophomore QB said. “I was waiting all summer. I was working really hard. I was just waiting on my name to be called.

It was great to come in and lead the team and get the win. The blocking was good, the receivers were catching everything. My throws were on most of the time. It was a good game.”

Lancers coach Russ Gordon was also pleased with the win.

“We just felt we were sloppy in the first half and settled down in the second half,” Gordon said. “We came on and established the run. I thought we looked pretty good. Our number two quarterback – Will Pyburn – came in and gave us a spark. I think he did a great job.”

Most of the concerns were related to traffic and transportation, with residents questioning how the neighborhood will be affected by the delivery trucks that will stock the Walmart as well as by the increased traffic once the store opens for business.

Others brought up the need for street safety since Shirpser Elementary School is just a couple of blocks away from the store’s proposed address.

A few Walmart employees who currently work at nearby stores (Duarte, Rosemead, and Baldwin Park) voiced their concerns that the construction of a Walmart in El Monte may affect the business in their own stores, possibly translating into decreased work hours or even the loss of their jobs.

Along with a Walmart representative who was present at the meeting, they promised to take into consideration the points raised by the residents. For that purpose, the team took notes and recorded the meeting.

The certification of the EIR is just one of several discretionary approvals that will be needed prior to construction. Later on there will be further opportunity for public involvement, including a 45-day Draft EIR comment period that is anticipated to run from November 2013 to midJanuary of 2014.

While residents excited about the Walmart store wanted an opening date to look forward to, such date is not yet available.

However, it was said that construction would take about 14 months after the EIR is presented to the City Council. The tentative date for that City Council Hearing is May of 2014, which would place the opening of the Walmart store sometime in the summer of 2015.

Con Gioia, directed by Preethi de Silva, acclaimed expert on the performance of the keyboard music of C.P.E. Bach, will devote the next two seasons beginning in November 2013 to concerts of chamber music and solo keyboard and orchestral works by the composer to commemorate his 300th birthday in March 2014.

Born in Weimar, Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach was the second son of J. S. Bach and his wife Maria Barbara and more famous than his father and considered “an original genius” in the late eighteenth century. He served at the court of Frederic the Great in Berlin and Potsdam for almost twenty years before accepting an appointment of director of music of the five main protestant churches and cantor at the Johanneum in Hamburg, as the successor to Georg Philipp Telemann (his godfather).

Duarte Burglaries continue – Residents asked to be vigilant The City of Duarte and the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department have advised residents to be aware that two burglaries occurred in the Royal Oaks or Area 9 of Duarte recently.

On Wednesday, September 4, between 7:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m. in the 2600 Block of Sunnydale Drive while the resident was away from home the

suspect(s) pried open the garage side entry door and gained entry into the home. Among the items reported stolen were a miscellaneous gold jewelry and approximately $500 of currency in coins. There were no witnesses.

On Friday, September 6, between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. in the 400 Block of Las Lomas Road while the resident was away

from home the suspect(s) attempted to enter through a side window but failed to make entry as the wooden stake would not allow them to pry the window open.

Entry was successfully made through a side door which was pried open. Among the items reported stolen were a black Ipad 3, a white gold (male) wedding ring, and $500 of currency in coins.

There were no witnesses.

Pasadena Armenian Genocide Memorial Approved Former Pasadena police chief Barney Melekian, Pasadena Armenian Genocide Memorial Committee, said the monument is an important commemoration of an event in Armenian history that many, including the U.S. government, do not recognize as a genocide.

“Most people have no idea of the significance of April 24, part of this is because the Turkish government continues to deny that this event ever happened,” Melekian said.

The memorial design consists of a tripod from which a drop of water will fall into a basin beneath it.

Approximately 1.5 million drops will fall over the course of a year. The tripod will be surrounded by stone paving, benches and a formal hedge in a circular pattern. It would be 28 feet in diameter and 16 feet in height.

The project will be placed in Memorial Park.

27th Annual ASID Pasadena Home & Kitchen Tour joins Union Station to end homelessness A local group of interior designers is gearing up for the 27th year of their popular fall Pasadena Home & Kitchen Tour, “A Day of Great Design.” And for the first time in its history, leaders of the Pasadena Chapter of the American Society of Interior Designers say they will donate a portion of the tour’s proceeds to Union Station Homeless Services of Pasadena to help end homelessness in the San Gabriel Valley.

Tickets will go on sale August 1st for this year’s event—to be held Sunday, October 6th-- featuring selfguided tours of professionally designed interiors of four spectacular homes in Pasadena, La Cañada and Arcadia.

Dream the Midsummer Night's Dream Southern California Shakespeare Festival players put on rollicking performance

By Courtney Blackburn In ancient Athens, Greece, when Duke Theseus (he who defeated the Minotaur, with the help of a plucky princess and a ball of thread) is about to wed the Amazon Queen Hippolyta, another marriage is destined to take place. It is the marriage of plucky Hermia to her father's choice suitor, Demetrius. But Hermia loves another named Lysander.

And Demetrius is beloved by a young woman named Helena.

When the competing couples end up eloping, escaping, and chasing each other in the forest outside Athens, they run straight into another quarreling couple: Oberon and Titania, King and Queen of the Fairies.

What happens next is a mad romp through mistaken identity, love potions, confused actors (in a play within the actual play), and of course, marriage.

The ninth season of the Southern California Shakespeare Festival presents an enchanting and very funny version of "A Midsummer Night's Dream," debatably William Shakespeare's most humorous play. In the intimate theatre at Cal Poly Pomona, the cast performs on a sparse stage decorated with touches of ancient Greece -- Corinthian columns twined with ivy -and costuming that ranges from medieval European to Indian, a fun and colorful conglomeration of vests, shifts, saris, and of course, dramatic flowing capes.

done something else of note: it has given a loving tribute to the traditional performance of "Midsummer" and all other Shakespeare plays by turning the casting around.

Shakespeare's company, back in Shakespeare's day, used to cast men in women's roles, so the SCSF has done the opposite by casting women as men--Oberon (Annie Dennis), Demetrius (Marissa Pitts) and Lysander (Tiana Parker)--and what a fun choice it is, informed by history and dedicated, in the SCSF's own words, to the equality of gender.

This very funny and mostly-traditional play may be seen throughout the month of September, with an opening gala on 7-8th and performances running Saturdays at 8:00pm and Sundays at 2:00pm, with one Friday show on September 27th (8:00pm) leading to closing weekend: Saturday September 28th at 8:00pm, and finally Sunday September 29th at 2:00pm.

34th Annual Bookmark Contest Fall 2013 County of Los Angeles Public Library is presenting their 34th Annual Bookmark Contest. This year's theme is “Read, Seek, Explore! ♦ Leer Buscar, Explorar!” The deadline to enter at your local County of Los Angeles Public Library is October 19, 2013.

This contest is a special program for children and their families and highlights the wonder and importance of books and reading. The challenge for parents, educators and librarians is to introduce children to great reads and nurture the love of reading and the library.

Jacque Robinson throws hat into the ring to run for the California state Senate The election still might be almost three years away, but Pasadena City Council Member Jacque Robinson has already thrown her hat into the ring to run for the California state Senate seat in the Pasadena area that will be vacated that year.

Robinson, who has been on the council since 2007, said that government often fails people and she would like to change that.

“I believe California can do better,” Robinson said.

“It can do better specifically for our senate district. A lot of people are critical of government. Government is supposed to be there to make lives easier, not more difficult.

It doesn’t always work that way and I think that can be a result of the people who are in office.”

Robinson said it is also important for politicians to be involved in their local areas.

“I think it’s important for state legislators – and even our local council members – to share some of the same experiences that are going on in their communities, so when they get around to making some of these policies they have experience in what they are trying to solve,” she said.

“There’s the large issues, like public education,” Robinson said. “How we’re going to fix that across the state? There’s always challenges with funding.

Right now we’re seeing the effects of (releasing prisoners back into their communities).

That’s mainly without funding. What are local cities doing to receive those individuals?”

However, she added she doesn’t have all the answers in her back pocket.

“I think the governor has done some good things, especially with local-control funding and making sure the schools with the highest needs are able to get more funding,” she said. “But I think school funding, in general, is a very complicated issue. I don’t have specifics right now.

That’s the part of getting out into the senate district and hearing what they have to say.”

One area she’d like to affect is changing Proposition 13, which was passed by voters in 1978 and deals with property taxes.

“(Business owners are) paying the same (tax rates) they were paying years back when the start of the ownership of their parcels started,” Robinson said. “The cost of living has increased for everybody. We’re all paying more taxes. But that hasn’t necessarily been the way with the commercial entity. I think we definitely have to have a conversation about that.”

However, Robinson said she wants to make sure that government is always there as a safety net for those who need it.

“We need to make sure that people who need help from social services – from the government – have it,” she said.

A new California Appellate case just published August 8, 2013, “Glaski v. Bank of America”, holds that a homeowner can challenge his lender’s right to foreclose by showing that the Deed of Trust never made it into the securitized trust until after the trust’s closing date.

This is the case in most loans made in the last 12 years.

If the bank foreclosed we should be able to get the homeowner money damages and/or the house back. Or a lawsuit could be filed and a court ruling obtained preventing the court from foreclosing. Recently enacted Sections 2924(a)(6) and 2924.19 of California Civil Code provide the same relief to homeowners.

It is highly suggested that homeowners take this window of opportunity to get relief before the banks get Congress to close this door with national legislation.

The Arcadia Unified School District has three of the top four highest scoring middle schools in Los Angeles County on the Academic Performance Index.

Out of the more than 300 middle schools in the county, Foothills Middle School ranked first, tied with Huntington Middle School in San Marino, with an API of 977.

Superintendent Joel Shawn was very pleased with the results.

“Obviously, when you have schools like ours that are scoring at the top of the schools, you realize it’s one of many indicators we use to gauge our success,” Shawn said.

The schools went on lockdown at about 2 p.m. and according to one officer who heard

the 9-1-1 tapes, the caller was indeed the very same man who called yesterday warning of the Santa Fe Middle School incident, “ absolutely…the same individual,” the officer told Beacon Media.

The school was officially unlocked at about 4:30 and students reunited with their families. No suspect was found.

"Screaming Eagles" reunion slated Sept. 14 in Monrovia VFW Post 2070 Since 1974 the 101st Airborne Division has been the United States Army's "Air Assault" Division. The Division is capable of lifting, by helicopter, a 4,000 soldier combined arms force up to 150 kilometers behind enemy lines in one lift. Having approximately 281 helicopters, including three battalions of Apache attack helicopters, makes the "Screaming Eagles" the most versatile fighting unit in the Army. It is the world's only air assault division. The 101st consists of three infantry brigades, Division Artillery, Division Support Command, the 101st Aviation Brigade, the 159th Aviation Brigade, the 101st Corps Support Group, and various other separate commands stationed at Fort Campbell, Kentucky.

Although the Screaming Eagles won their fame and reputation during the Second World War, the 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) can trace its lineage back to World War I. In the build up for the Great War, the 101st Division was originally activated on July 23, 1918. Without fanfare, the

Division was demobilized in December of 1918. In 1921 the 101st Infantry Division was reconstituted as a reserve unit with headquarters in Wisconsin. This is where the distinctive "eagle head patch" was acquired. The eagle's head represented "Old Abe," the famed eagle mascot of the Wisconsin Infantry Regiment during the Civil War. The Division remained in the reserves until needed for World War II. The Screaming Eagles were disbanded as a reserve unit and reactivated in the regular army as the 101st Airborne Division on August 15, 1942.

The last mission of World War II for the Screaming Eagles was the taking of the German town of Berchtesgaden, Hitler's retreat in Bavaria. From March until August of 1945, the 101st Airborne served as occupation troops and took the surrender of German military units and prominent Nazi officials. In August of 1945 the Division moved to Auxerre, France to train for the invasion of Japan. The operation became unnec-

essary when Japan surrendered two weeks later. The 101st Airborne Division was deactivated on November 30, 1945 at Auxerre, France.

During the early days of Vietnam, the Division made its transition from parachutes to helicopters as the method of insertion. In July of 1968, the Division changed its name to the 101st Air Cavalry Division. The next year, on August 29, 1969, the Division changed its name again to the 101st Airborne Division (Air Mobile), making it the Army's second air mobile division.

In late 1971 and early 1972 the Screaming Eagles left Vietnam and returned to Fort Campbell. During almost seven years of action in Vietnam, the 101st Airborne participated in 15 campaigns. Most notable were Hamburger Hill in 1969 and Firebase Ripcord in 1970.

Sunday, September 1: Just after 2:35 a.m., an officer was patrolling the area of Live Oak Avenue and Sixth Avenue when he observed a male subject urinating on an electricity pole. The 22-yearold Asian male was cited and released in the field without incident.

At approximately 5:45 p.m., an officer responded to the Arcadia Police Department front counter in regards to a theft report. After having dinner in the outdoor patio of Outback Steakhouse, 166 East Huntington Drive, the victim returned home without realizing she had left her purse at the table. The purse was not located and no one at the restaurant saw who took it.

Monday, September 2: At about 11:21 a.m., an officer was dispatched to the area of El Dorado Street and Second Avenue in reference to a battery report. A male subject and his wife engaged in mutual combat after a verbal argument. Both subjects had visible injuries and gave conflicting statements about who was the dominant aggressor.

Both subjects, a 48-year-old Asian male and 50-year-old Asian female, were arrested and transported to the Arcadia City Jail for booking.

Around 8:53 p.m., an officer conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle for a broken tail light in the area of Santa Cruz Road and Colorado Boulevard. The officer discovered the 26-year-old Hispanic male driver was never issued a license. The subject was cited in the field and the vehicle was released to its registered owner.

Tuesday, September 3: Shortly before 1:00 p.m., an officer located a vehicle with a warrant attached to the li-

cense plate and conducted a traffic stop on Huntington Drive near Gate 1 of the Santa Anita Race Track. The officer discovered the warrant belonged to the driver who failed to appear at a court date. The 41-year-old female of unknown race was cited for driving with a suspended license and her vehicle was impounded for 30 days.

Around 11:30 p.m., an officer conducted an enforcement stop on a vehicle in the area of Huntington Drive and Baldwin Avenue for expired registration tags. A record check revealed the 38-yearold Black male had an expired license, two outstanding misdemeanor warrants, and was in possession of prescription pills without a prescription. He was arrested and transported to the Arcadia City Jail for booking.

Wednesday, September 4: At approximately 7:38 a.m., officers were dispatched to the 400 block of West Huntington Drive in regards to a report of a possible overdose.

A 13-year-old female subject became ill after she ingested an unknown amount of Aspirin pills while she was walking to Arcadia High School, 180 Campus Drive. Arcadia Fire responded to the scene and transported the subject to Arcadia Methodist Hospital for treatment. Approximately 57 pills were missing from the 100-count Aspirin bottle. The juvenile was placed on a 72hour detention for evaluation and treatment.

Around 2:54 p.m., an officer conducted a records check on a vehicle parked at the Santa Anita Mall, 400 South Baldwin Avenue, and discovered it had expired registration. As the officer approached the vehicle, he detected a 2013 sticker on the license plate.

The 21-year-old Black male

was cited for the listed violations and released in the field without incident.

Thursday, September 5: At about 7:00 a.m., an officer was dispatched to an apartment complex in the 000 block of Genoa Street regarding a garage fire. Arcadia Fire responded to the scene and put out the fire, which started inside the engine compartment of a parked vehicle. No injuries were reported and the exact cause of the fire was unknown at the time of the report.

At approximately 11:21 p.m., an officer responded to the 1500 block of South Cambury Road regarding an attempted residential burglary report. The victim discovered unknown suspect(s) broke her kitchen window, but were unable to make entry. No evidence or witnesses were located.

Friday, September 6: Just after midnight, an officer responded to solo traffic collision at the intersection of Huntington Drive and Baldwin Avenue. As the driver attempted a left turn onto Huntington Drive, he lost control of his vehicle and collided with the sidewalk. Upon contact with the 29-year-old Hispanic male driver, the officer smelt a strong odor of alcohol emitting from his breath and person. An investigation revealed he had a blood alcohol content greater than 0.08 percent, expired registration, and was displaying a false registration sticker. He was arrested and transported to the Arcadia City Jail for booking.

Monrovia PD

Trespassing On August 16 at 10:32 a.m., officers were dispatched to the 600 block of Gladys regarding a trespassing report.

The victim was driving home when she observed a female

exiting her front door, just as she drove into her driveway.

The female suspect saw the resident and immediately began running. The suspect was apprehended and identified. The suspect was placed under arrest for trespassing into an unlocked residence.

Nothing in the home was tampered with.

Criminal Threats / Assault with a Deadly Weapon – Suspects Arrested On August 16 at 4:50 p.m., two male Hispanics were walking home in the 700 block of California, when they noticed they were being followed closely by three male, black suspects. While on California and Royal Oaks, the male, black suspects accosted the victims. The suspects had bricks and rocks in their hands as weapons. The victims feared for their safety so they began running toward their home. The three suspects threw the bricks and rocks at the victims hitting them. The suspects yelled that they were going to kill them and shoot them with a gun. The victims ran home, called the police for help, in fear for their lives. The victims were not members of any gang. The suspects were quickly apprehended by officers and after positive identification, were arrested.

None of the three suspects had a gun.

Assault with a Deadly Weapon / Possession of Methamphetamine Pipe / Parole Hold – Suspect Arrested On August 17 at 4:27 p.m., officers were dispatched to the 1700 block of South Mayflower regarding a shooting. The witness observed a suspect shoot what he believed to be a BB gun at another male. The male who was shot jumped into a white pickup truck and fled the scene. The suspect was quickly detained by officers, and the BB gun was located.

The suspect is on active parole, and a search revealed he was in possession of two methamphetamine pipes.

The assault was over a dispute between the victim and a female, who had been outside the suspect’s apartment arguing with each other. The victim drove himself to the Monrovia Police Department, where he was treated

by Monrovia Fire for a wound to his lower back and was taken to a Hospital. The suspect was arrested.

Vehicle Burglary On August 18 at 8:26 a.m.

a victim called to report a vehicle burglary. The victim parked vehicle her vehicle in the 600 block of South Myrtle. The victim stated the vehicle was locked, but windows were not all the way up. Unknown suspect(s) entered the locked vehicle and took victim’s wallet. The Investigation is continuing.

Suspicious Circumstance On August 21 at 12:50 a.m., officers responded to the 500 block of South Mayflower regarding a suspect jumping over a neighbor's fence. All available personnel responded and with the assistance of the helicopter. The area was cleared and the suspect was not found. There was no evidence of a crime.

Vehicle Burglary August 22 at 2:22 p.m., a female subject came to the Police Department lobby to report a vehicle burglary that had occurred several days prior. Her vehicle was parked on the street in front of her house in the 200 block of Acacia. The suspect ransacked her vehicle and took several gift cards. She reported the theft late as she had to leave town for a couple days and had just returned. The investigation is continuing.

Grand Theft Auto August 22 at 7:06 p.m., an officer was dispatched to the 100 block of Stedman regarding the report of a stolen vehicle. The victim last saw his vehicle parked in the carport of his complex at about 1:00 p.m. All keys are accounted for and there were no signs of forced entry.

The vehicle is a gray, 2004 Toyota Corolla. The investigation is continuing.

Sierra Madre PD

Wednesday September 4 A 12:30am an officer observed a traffic violation take place at Baldwin Avenue and Orange Grove Avenue and stopped the vehicle to investigate. The officer determined that the driver (female 32 years of age) was accompanied by her 3 year old son. The driver did not have any identification on her and was acting very agitated.

While being interviewed, the driver admitted that she had an arrest record for possession of methamphetamine and also indicated she had ingested the drug recently.

As the interview continued, the driver admitted that she had an amount of methamphetamine hidden in a body cavity. 13.0 grams of a possible narcotic substance

was subsequently recovered from her person. The driver was arrested for possession of narcotics for sale and transportation of narcotics for sale. The child was placed into the care of the Department of Children’s Services.

Friday September 6 At 2pm a traffic collision took place at Sierra Madre Boulevard and Mountain Trail Avenue.

A large rental truck was attempting to make a wide right turn onto Mountain Trail and the driver signaled his intent. A passenger vehicle behind the truck attempted to make a right turn at the same time and drove into the gap between the truck and the right side of the truck. The truck struck the left side of the vehicle causing moderate damage. No serious injuries were reported.

Saturday September 7 Just after midnight, a resident in the 100 block of East Highland Avenue looked out a window and observed an individual inside a neighbor’s car. After a few moments, she observed a male wearing dark clothing exit the vehicle and walk to another vehicle parked at the curb. The police were notified but the suspect drove away before units arrived.

The investigation revealed that the suspect entered an unlocked vehicle and rummaged through the glove box and center console. No property was reported missing. The next morning a resident in the 00 block of East Laurel Avenue reported his unlocked vehicle had also been entered and several items inside were disturbed.

At 1pm, a traffic collision occurred at Sturtevant Drive and Woodland Avenue. The driver of a passenger vehicle was trying to negotiate her way out of the Mary’s Market parking lot when she accidentally pressed the accelerator, propelling the car forward. The vehicle went over the curb, scaled the retaining wall and came to a rest front first in the drainage channel. Due to the positioning of the vehicle, Fire Department personnel were called on to extract the driver and her two passengers. The occupants complained of soreness but no serious injuries were immediately evident. Removing the vehicle from the drainage channel required the closure of the intersection and the use of heavy duty tow equipment.
