Rep. Schiff calls on department of defense to reinstate military tuition assistance programs Rep. Adam Schiff (DBurbank) joined 46 of his colleagues in a bipartisan letter to Department of Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel urging the department to reinstate tuition assistance for service members. “Agencies across the federal government are having to face tough choices in light of sequestration, but these cuts that hurt our men and women in uniform just don’t make sense,” said Rep. On Tuesday, March 19, 2013 at 3:21 p.m., 12 Glendale units (1 Battalion Chief Command Team, 1 Battalion Chief, 6 engine companies, 3 ladder truck companies and 1 basic life support ambulance), responded to a reported structure fire at 611 East Chevy Chase Drive in Glendale. Glendale Engine 22 was first to arrive on-scene. They discovered a threestory multiple unit apartment building with smoke and fire showing from a single window on the third floor. Firefighters deployed an aggressive attack with coordinated ventilation and were able to contain the fire to one unit. As a precaution, firefighters quickly evacuated residents from the entire apartment building. Knockdown of the fire was 23 minutes after units

Eleven year old Gabriella Pontrelli is in the Dog Haus after finishing her language arts writing assignment! A fifth grade student at Holy Family School in South Pasadena, Gabriella and her classmates were tasked with writing a letter

to a business that included a complaint and recommendation. Her business of choice: Dog Haus. While recognizing Dog Haus as one of her favorite restaurants for burgers, hot dogs, French Fries and Tater Tots, Gabriella sunk her

teeth into the assignment and offered her complaint and subsequent recommendation. “Although I love Dog Haus,” she wrote. “I feel the menu is not complete. I think there should be one more cheeseburger…named after me!”

said. “This up-to-date Recommended Literature list represents a vital resource for students, teachers and parents.” The new list is a collection of more than 7,800 titles of recommended reading for children and adolescents. It has been updated with appropriate contemporary titles that reflect rich cultural diversity written over the last decade. This online list also reflects the quality and complexity of texts students should be reading both at school and out-

side of the classroom. Works include fiction, nonfiction, poetry, and drama to accommodate a variety of tastes, interests, and abilities. Visitors may search the interactive database by author, title, annotation, illustrator, translator, subject, grade span, and language. BY TERRY MILLER Family members of the two people killed as a result of a Christmas Day police pursuit in Pasadena have filed five claims against the city. Each claim seeks monetary settlement including $13,000 for funeral expenses and for emotional distress. Kendrick Ng, 11, and Tracey Ong Tan, 25. were killed around 8PM on Dec. 25, 2012, that also injured Kendrick Ng’s parents and sister. According to the March 11 filing by attorney
