Dr. Jane Goodall Leads Off Rose Parade and Rose Bowl Game New Year’s Day Goodall is the 124th Tournament of Roses Grand Marshal: Dr. Jane Goodall, DBE, founder of the Jane Goodall Institute and UN Messenger of Peace, will serve as the Grand Marshal of the 2013 Tournament of Roses festivities. On New Year’s Day, in front of a world television audience, Dr. Goodall will ride in the 124th Rose Parade® presented by Honda and themed “Oh, the Places You’ll Go!.” She will then toss the coin before the 99th Rose Bowl Game®presented by VIZIO. Dr. Goodall has been an inspiration to the Pasadena Tournament of Roses as the organization continues to seek ways to make the Rose Parade and Rose Bowl Game more sustainable by finding ways to evolve waste-management practices and inspire that change in those who participate in Tournament of Roses events. “We selected our theme, ‘Oh, the Places You’ll Go!’ with Dr. Goodall in mind as Grand Marshal,” said Tournament of Roses President Sally Bixby. “The theme can be interpreted as a celebration of accomplishment, disPlease see page 8

‘Fiscal Cliff’ Threatens Benefits, Vocational Assistance for Local Workforce

On December 25, the Pasadena Police Department and the Federal Bureau of Investigation were conducting joint gang enforcement in the city of Pasadena following a homicide that occurred earlier in the day. At approximately 8:00 p.m., the officers observed a silver Dodge Durango commit a traffic violation in the area of Claremont Street and Marengo Avenue. They attempted to initiate a traffic stop; however, the driver, later identified as Darryl Williams, failed to yield. A vehicle pursuit ensued as Williams attempted to flee. As Williams approached the intersection of Marengo Avenue and Maple Street, he failed to stop for a red light and drove into the intersection colliding with a minivan making a left turn onto Maple Please see page 5

It is an imminent reality facing many of the unemployed in our own area. If the U.S. Congress and the President fail to work out a plan to avert this so-called ‘fiscal cliff’ before the end of the year, the American public will inherit a weighty package of tax hikes and spending cuts. 2nd Annual New Year’s Eve on Myrtle

-Courtesy Photo

Monrovia’s historic Old Town district will host its 2nd Annual New Year’s Eve on Myrtle this year. The event will begin at 7 p.m. on the December 31st and will feature a live band, a beer and wine garden, and a family-friendly seating area with tables and chairs for outside diners complete with free games and fun crafts for the kiddies. At midnight attendees will ring in the New Year with a traditional champagne toast and a not-so-traditional “Ball Raising”, Monrovia-style. The “Ball Raising” – as opposed to the traditional Ball

Drop – was the brainchild of Event Planner, Penny Arroyo, and Family Festival Productions working with Monrovia staff representative, Dan Bell as they brainstormed last year’s event. With no skyscrapers available for lowering the flashy ornament, the next best thing – the raising of the ball -- is now the new tradition for Monrovia. Restaurants in Old Town will be open, and many of the small shops will stay open late as well, so celebrants are encouraged to come early, dine out at their favorite restaurant, and, of

course, do a little shopping before the band begins at about 7 p.m. And be prepared to dance because The Lance and Gary Show will return this year with their crowd-pleasing music that spans decades of favorite sounds. Take the Myrtle off ramp from the 210 freeway and head north into Old Town where parking is always FREE. Man Arrested After Stealing Laptops from Staples in El Monte Teo Crazybull, 30, was arrested on December 22 on suspicion of robbery after employees at the Staples store on Peck Road called the police. Crazybull entered the store and the staff recognized him immediately from two days before when he had sliced packaging with a box cutter and taken three laptops

with him without paying. The employees confronted him and Crazybull reportedly threatened them with an object and then drove off. The El Monte Police followed him on the 10 and 605 freeways and later the Whittier Police and the LA County Sheriff Department became involved.

Crazybull was arrested near the Slauson Avenue freeway exit in Whittier. According to records, he is now being held at the Twin Towers Correctional Facility in Los Angeles in lieu of a $105,000 bail amount. He will have to go to the Rio Hondo Municipal Court the morning of January 4.

over the cliff will cause the nation to fall back into a recession with a 9.1 percent rise in unemployment by the end of 2013. Expressing concern for the Golden State, California Treasurer Bill Lockyer said about 40 percent of the federal sequestration impacts, referring to the automatic spending cuts, are all on state and local government programs. “There’s also the impact on taxpayers if unemployment insurance is suspended, if payroll taxes aren’t cut or tax rates go up … and the unclear possible result of changes in healthcare funding,” Lockyer said. According to a Dec. 18 statement from the California Employment Development Department, federal extensions of unemployment benefits will come to an abrupt end for an estimated 400,000 Californians in two weeks unless Congress and the President take action. Cesar Valladares, Em-

ployment Programs Manager at the EDD, said his department is already working to provide the public with information on other sources of relief, such as the Department of Social Services, before individuals run out of unemployment insurance. “Those 400,000, if Congress doesn't act, will be affected,” said Valladares. “And because we've been here before, and we did this last year, this is not the first time we've seen Congress waiting to act.” According to the department, there are 85,351 people from Los Angeles County who received notices in November that their federal extensions for unemployment benefits will end after the week ending Dec. 29. Those EDD notices also supplied individuals with information on a wide range of alternative forms of assistance from local One-Stop Career Centers, including resume and job search assistance,

networking groups, and free training services. However, these vocational and training programs for out-of-work individuals, which are funded by the Workforce Investment Act and offered at local One-Stop Career and WorkSource centers, are also threatened by the approaching measures of austerity. California receives approximately $450 million each year in federal funds under the Workforce Investment Act of 1998 to provide vocational services and strategies for adults, laid-off workers, and youth, according to the City of Los Angeles Workforce Investment Board. The purpose of these workforce development activities is to increase participants’ employment, job retention, earnings, and improve their occupational skills. The Small Business MaPlease see page 4

800 New Laws Will Go into Effect in 2013 in California California approved a law exempting clergy members opposed to gay marriage from performing same-sex marriage ceremonies. California coaches and administrators in K-12 schools, as well as higher education employees who have regular contact with children, will be required to report suspected child sexual abuse. Another law bans the use of dogs when hunting bobcats or bears. Some young undocumented immigrants will

be able to get a driver license. Californians between the ages of 16 and 31 who qualify for President Obama’s work permit program will also be eligible for a license. California voters could potentially register to vote on election day with a provisional ballot, as long as the conditional voter registration is deemed effective. Sameday registration will be permitted once the Secretary of State certifies California’s new statewide voter database, VoteCal.

Two laws ban businesses and schools from demanding that potential employees or students share social media credentials and private content. In the health care sector, another new law mandates that after getting a mammogram, women must be informed if they have dense breast tissue. Effective January 1, 2013 California requires the CO2 detectors be installed in condominiums and apartments.

Dorothy's Place What Can I Say?

By Dorothy Denne Well, 2012 is rapidly coming to an end. Only 5 more days and it will be history. I’m not going to attempt to recap events. The media, whatever form we choose to use, will do plenty of that and probably more accurately than I would. So, I’m looking to the future. The other day I ran across a page I had torn from an old AARP News Bulletin. It was about fixtures of every day life that have vanished, are vanishing and will vanish. Remember when neither rain nor snow would keep the mailman away? Today they are called letter carriers, the mail they carry is called snail mail and they are an endangered species. Remember the rotary phone? As these 20th century icons gather dust, people are dropping their land-line

plans and opting for cell only. Eventually folks will be talking on mini-computers the size of cell phones, and basic telephones will become memories. Before I’ve even learned to use some of them, it is goodbye CDs, DVDs, Blu-Rays, thumb drives, video game discs and their players. Electronic entertainment will be bought and played directly from the internet. Analog clocks and their mini forms, the wrist watch, will become retro novelties as they are replaced by cell phones synched perfectly to satellites. Springing forward and falling back will be automatically done for us. Here’s one for you: toilet-seat bidets will wash and dry at the touch of a button, eliminating toilet paper. A far cry from my childhood days on the farm with outdoor toilets served by Sears Roebuck and Montgomery Ward catalogs. Speaking of saving paper, gone will be glove box road maps. No need for these when map apps offer directions, traffic info, drive-

time estimates and an arrow pointing to the nearest whatever. Along that map line is a somewhat scary thought. Robots or self-driving cars are on the near horizon. Gasoline pumps, too, will become a thing of the past. When your car drives itself to a service station, it will be to plug in for a battery recharge or to fill up with hydrogen. Not so technical or futuristic but, as a former teacher, one of my pet peeves is the disappearance of cursive writing. Some states have already officially dropped handwriting as an educational requirement, with many more currently considering doing the same. One day extra instruction may be required for students who wish to read historical documents in their original drafts. Also on their list of going, going, almost gone are answering machines, tube televisions, phone books, bank deposit slips, printed encyclopedias, film, and incandescent light bulbs. What can I say? I guess just Happy New Year!

Daughters of the Revolution (DAR) Host Elegant Christmas Luncheon The Santa Anita Chapter of the DAR enjoyed its annual Christmas Luncheon in the private dining room at Hillcrest in La Verne. Hosted by Mary Ann Williams (Regent) the group welcomed new and pending members on Saturday, December 15th, Alice Tangey and Julie Fendrick and Floretta Lauber. The decorations and ambience of the room put everyone in a holiday mood. The table was covered in a dark green cloth with a sparkling gold runner spaced with gold spiral Christmas trees set with jewels. The effect was quite beautiful. The luncheon menu included a dinner salad of poached

jority, a business advocacy group, conducted a recent poll of small business owners that cited an alarming concern for local workforce training and assistance programs. From the 500 small business entrepreneurs polled, 66 percent believed there would be cuts to Workforce Investment Act state grants, thereby severely impacting employment and training services for disadvantaged, underemployed and out-of-work individuals. The Foothill Workforce Investment Board in Pasadena anticipates an approximate 8.5 percent reduction in Workforce Investment Act funding as a result of the federal budget sequestration process, according to Phillip L. Dunn, executive director of the Foothill Workforce Investment Board. Dunn said the FWIB offers vocational training through public and private

training providers by means of Individual Training Accounts. Through this program, workers are given vouchers to use at their discretion at eligible training providers. Before ITAs, workforce counselors prescribed the type of training a worker would receive through public funds. “If there is a ‘fiscal cliff’ and reduction in funding, FWIB will have to reduce the number of ITAs that it can offer to training and education seekers,” Dunn said. However, if sequestration goes through, the FWIB’s more immediate concern will be the increased number of unemployment insurance recipients visiting the One-Stop Career Center for employment and training services. “Typically, these clients are more interested in job development and placement assistance verses training services,” he said. “FWIB and the Employment Development Department will have to balance its services to meet the needs of both the training and job seeking populations.” Dunn said that the FWIB offers training in many highdemand occupations and high-wage industry sectors, such as clerical, truck driving, IT, and medical assisting. The training takes place at the Foothill Employment and Training Connection, a comprehensive One-Stop Career Center, located at 1207 E. Green Street in Pasadena. “FWIB operates a demand-driven vocational training system, whereby we work closely with employers to ob-

tain workforce intelligence on the types of training needed to meet local labor market needs,” said Dunn, explaining that FWIB's success is measured by a set of performance standards that include job placement, job retention and increased wage rates. WorkSource centers, which are also supported through federal funds via the Workforce Investment Act, are a free resource throughout Los Angeles County that connect individuals looking for work with businesses that need help with recruitment. Expecting future funding cuts to WorkSource centers, the Los Angeles County Workforce Investment Board recently approved a series of reforms to ensure ongoing services are provided to the community. According to a report published by the L.A. County Workforce Investment Board, the proposed changes call for focusing training, employment services and support to businesses in the following high-growth industries: construction, transportation and logistics, engineering and ‘green’ jobs, health care, biotech, hospitality and tourism, and finance. Andaz San Diego Hotel By Greg Aragon I love being in the heart of the action. But I can also appreciate a casual evening with wine and wonderful views. I got both and much more, when I recently discovered Andaz San Diego, a fascinating boutique hotel located in the heart of the historic Gaslamp Quarter in downtown San Diego. “The concept behind Andaz was born out of the belief that today’s travelers are in search of hotels that offer warm and friendly service and have a unique design aesthetic,” says Rusty Middleton, general manager of Andaz San Diego. “We are excited to offer them that experience here in San Diego, one of the most appealing destinations in Southern California.” My Andaz getaway began when a friend and I checked into a beautiful 4th-floor suite overlooking the ocean, the San Diego Coronado Bridge, and Petco Park (home to the San

Diego Padres). The modern-designed room offered two queen beds, large flat screen TV, a sleek bathroom with hardwood floor, glossy brick-shaped tile and large glass shower, and a stocked fridge / mini-bar area with top-notch beers and potent potables, and lots of free snacks and beverages, free Internet, and 24-hour room service available. My favorite aspect of the room was the sweeping city views, afforded by three huge windows looking to the water, the Gaslamp District, and East San Diego. The windows were so big they came with gigantic, couch-like window seals. After getting to know the suite, we explored the rest of the historic, 159room hotel. Our first stop was the rooftop pool area, where a wine bar, a nightclub and gorgeous city views attract visitors from all over – especially at night when music plays, while sea breezes surround the open-air environment. While on the roof, we sipped cold beers and relaxed poolside admiring

the San Diego Skyline. From the roof, I changed for a workout in the Andaz fitness center, taking advantage of the treadmill and various state-of-the-art weightlifting machines. I then rested before meeting my friend in the lobby for the daily Andaz wine reception, where guests are treated to complimentary wine. After mingling with other hotel guests and staff members, we strolled across the lobby and entered the hotel’s signature Katsuya San Diego Restaurant. Featuring the dynamic pairing of Master Sushi Chef Katsuya Uechi and design impresario Philippe Starck, Katsuya is truly a feast for the senses. With specialty cocktails, unique rolls and spectacular sushi and sashimi platters, Chef Uechi skillfully translates Japanese flavors to the American palate. Signature dishes include Crispy Rice with Spicy Tuna, Yellowtail Sashimi with Jalapeño and Miso-Marinated Black Cod. Our dinner began with crispy soft shell crab, fried on a succulent bed of sea-

Herb Alpert’s Vibrato, Grill, Jazz, Etc. Presents Ariana Savalas – “Sophisticated Lady” Herb Alpert’s Vibrato Grill Jazz…Etc. will present Ariana Savalas – “Sophisticated Lady,” a CD Release and Birthday Celebration, starring singer Ariana Savalas, with Guest Artist Pianist, Corky Hale for a One Night Only engagement on Wednesday, January 9, 2013 at 8:00 p.m. at Herb Alpert’s Vibrato Grill, Jazz, Etc.; 2930 N. Beverly Glen Circle; Bel Air, CA 90077-1724. Savalas will be accompanied by Joe Bagg, Piano; Steve Venz, Bass; Andy Sanesi, Drums and Steve Cottor, Guitar. Savalas will not only be celebrating her birthday that night, but the completion of her first jazz album entitled “Sophisticated Lady.” The concert will be followed by a CD signing. Ariana Savalas, an American Jazz Fusion vocalist, actress, songwriter and daughter of the late actor, Telly Savalas, will perform some of her original songs, including: “One Man Show,” “Shotgun,” “Too Late” and “Perfect Man,” along with popular standards. In addition, she will share some inside showbiz family stories. There is no Cover Charge. Food must be ordered to have reserved tables. The youngest daughter of legendary Emmy Awardâwinning (“Kojak”) and Academy Award-nominated (“Birdman of Alcatraz”) actor Telly Savalas and inventor Julie Savalas, Ariana’s diverse background includes attending a convent high school, touring Europe as a pop singer in her teens, studying Shakespeare and acting at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London, and attending Penn State University majoring in Criminology. Barely out of school, she won the title role of Miriam Shafer in the art-house feature film, “Miriam,” a true story of a Lithuanian Holo-

caust survivor. Her most recent film is “Akrasia” by Polish director Xavier Tatarkiewicz, is due out next year. Florida Weekly has written: “Ariana Savalas slinks through the crowd and makes her way to the stage, reminding her audience of stars from another era. She evokes Rita Hayworth, perhaps, for sheer glamour and talent, and Veronica Lake for that dazzling blonde mane, only unlike Miss Lake, Miss Savalas keeps both eyes fixed on her audience as she sings her way through classics of the Great American Songbook. Her sound has the echo of another era, too. The voice is easy on the ears, with a rapid vibrato that harkens to the days of Bessie Smith, Dinah Washington or maybe Etta James. And she teases the men of the audience, much as those great blues ladies did, parking herself on the lap of one man, and teasing the wives of others. She clearly is having a good time. Telly Savalas was iconic, and his daughter may well be, too.” The Palm Beach Post has written:

“There is a word often used to describe confident women. That word is ‘moxie,’ and Ariana Savalas’ cabaret show is brimming with it.” Following in her father’s footsteps, she also had a guest appearance on one of television’s top cop shows CBS’ “Criminal Minds.” Ariana also appears on famed jazz harp player/pianist (and wife of Mike Stoller of renowned songwriting team Leiber & Stoller) Corky Hale’s latest CD release, “Corky Hale… And Friends – I’m Glad There Is You,” singing her rendition of the song, “I See Your Face.” The man known to a generation of television viewers as “Kojak” died in 1994 when Ariana was just seven, but his legacy lives on through his talented daughter. After seeing Ariana’s cabaret, Variety’s late Army Archerd lovingly wrote, “As Telly would have said, ‘Who loves ya, baby?’ They all did.” To learn more about Ariana Savalas please visit www.facebook.com/arianasavalas.

RUOK?

Education Campaign Urges PartyGoers to Choose Sober Rides The California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) is providing federal funding to law enforcement agencies throughout the state for high visibility DUI enforcement this holiday period. DUI enforcement will reinforce the message to bar-goers to plan for a safe ride home. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration recently announced 2011 figures showing that the state’s DUI deaths remained unchanged from 2010. While the number remains at a 67 year record low, the 774 deaths that did occur are unacceptable. This year’s enforcement efforts include a new addition to the popular “RUOK?” anti-drunk driving campaign, which aims to reinforce the message that if you have to ask someone if they are okay to drive, they are probably not. The “RUOK?” campaign emphasizes the importance of safe and sober rides. The campaign takes aim at popular nightlife areas in four major cities throughout the state: Los Angeles, Sacramento, San Francisco and San Diego. “Wrapped” cars which are made to look like law enforcement cruisers in the front and taxi cabs in the rear will be placed in hightraffic areas every weekend during the crackdown. Each car will be accompanied by a street team that will distribute

materials that highlight rides home that are both normal – taxi, sober friend – and ridiculous – pirate ships and giant chickens. This effort, which helps to support the ongoing “RUOK?” campaign launched in 2011, highlights that no matter how ridiculous the ride may be, as long as it is a safe and sober ride, it is the right choice. These materials also include a QR code linking users to a GPSenabled cab-finder mobile website, which they can use to search for a nearby cab. The street teams will also encourage people to actively engage in campaign efforts via a “Not Driving” Instagram contest, another new element of this year’s campaign effort. Participants are asked to follow OTS on Instagram, upload photos that demonstrate their safe ride home, and add a “not driving,” caption and a #RUOK hashtag. Contest winners can receive taxi ride vouchers, donated by Taxi Magic, its participating fleets and other OTS partners. For more information on the RUOK? campaign or the wrapped cars, please visit the OTS Facebook at www.facebook.com/CaliforniaOTS or follow OTS on Twitter @ OTS_CA. Jane Goodall Studies a New Kind of ‘Wildlife' in Pasadena – TOR Continued from page 1

covery and travel of course, but equally valid is its implicit call to action. We think Dr. Goodall’s life story is a testament to the sense of adventure and openness to possibility that this phrase suggests: As a young woman, she defied convention to follow her dreams, and she has committed herself to a life of global citizenship, inspiring children and adults alike along the way. 2013 will be the 53rd anniversary of her field study of the Gombe chimpanzees. I can think of no one whose life has better exemplified our theme and message than Dr. Jane Goodall. Dr. Goodall is now an international icon, but it is her passion for discovery and how she has used her celebrity for the betterment of the world that has drawn us to her.” At the age of 26, Jane Goodall traveled from England to what is today Tanzania and bravely entered the little-known world of wild chimpanzees. She was equipped with nothing more than a notebook and a pair of binoculars. But with her unyielding patience and characteristic optimism, she won the trust of these initially shy creatures. She managed to open a window into their sometimes strange and often familiar-seeming lives. Her early findings—that chimpanzees make and use tools, eat meat, and engage in war-like activity—profoundly altered our understanding of what it means to be human.

Today, Dr. Goodall’s work revolves around inspiring action on behalf of endangered species, particularly chimpanzees, and encouraging people to do their part to make the world a better place for people, animals and the environment. The Jane Goodall Institute, which Dr. Goodall founded in 1977, works to protect the wild chimpanzees of Gombe National Park in Tanzania and other parts of Africa, but recognizes this cannot be accomplished without a comprehensive approach that addresses the needs of local people who are critical to chimpanzee survival. The Institute’s community-centered conservation program in Africa (TACARE) includes sustainable development projects that engage local people as true partners. The program began around Gombe in 1994, but has since been replicated in other parts of the continent. Jane Goodall’s Roots & Shoots, which Dr. Goodall started with a group of Tanzania students in 1991, is today the Institute’s global environmental and humanitarian youth program for young people from preschool through university with hundreds of thousands of members in more than 120 countries around the world. Members of Roots & Shoots California groups attended the event and es-

corted Dr. Goodall to the podium. “I am honored to be the Grand Marshal for the 2013 Tournament of Roses,” said Dr. Jane Goodall. “New Year’s day symbolizes the opportunity to work toward new goals, experience new beginnings, and make a difference. My dream for this New Year’s Day is for everyone to think of the places we can all go if we work together to make our world a better place. Every journey starts with a step and I am pleased to see the Tournament of Roses continue to take steps toward not only celebrating beauty and imagination, but also a cleaner environment.” “Each year, the Tournament of Roses invites its Grand Marshal to not only become a part of the Rose Parade and Rose Bowl Game, but also a part of its extended family,” said Bixby. “We are hoping to learn from Dr. Goodall as we continue to look for ways to make our events more sustainable in the area of resource management to promote long-term behavioral change.” Initiatives the Tournament of Roses is developing or continuing in 2012 include: With the assistance of Three Squares International Inc. (TSI), a Los Angelesbased, globally recognized environmental consulting firm, continue to develop greening strategies for the Rose Parade and Rose Bowl

Game and identify organizations to partner with and create sponsored recycling and greening efforts. TSI specializes in developing comprehensive sustainability plans for corporate entities, government agencies and academic institutions. Work in collaboration with Rose Parade participants to continue to pursue alternative power sources that could help to reduce emissions. In collaboration with the City of Pasadena, further enhance recycling efforts and diversion of waste material at Tournament of Roses-sponsored events. Provide Rose Parade band participants with reusable water bottles at the end of the Parade route. Provide event participants and attendees with recycling tips for their visit to Pasadena on New Year’s Day. These projects are just a few measures that the Tournament of Roses plans to put in place. Additional greening strategies can be found on the Tournament of Roses website athttp://www.tournamentofroses.com/TheRoseParade/AboutUs/GreeningStrategies.aspx. A Look Back at 2012

What happened in San Gabriel Valley 2012‌.Lots: A dramatic new Gold Line Bridge was completed in Arcadia over the 210 freeway. We lost composer Marvin Hamlisch just weeks after he was announced as the new Pasadena Pops conductor. A multi million dollar Performing Arts Center opened at Arcadia High School and to help celebrate the Arts, crooner Paul Anka danced and sang the night away at a gala grand opening. Anthony Portantino , the ever popular Assemblymember, left government after a very successful career with the passage of several important bills he authored.. We also lost Ray Bradbury in 2012. The Martian Chronicles author was a frequent visitor to our area. There was controversy over the shooting death of Kendrec McDade and protestors held several rallyies again the fact that Pasadena Police did not video tape the incident which took the Duarte High student’s life. Mars Rover was succesfully placed on tghat planet thanks to JPL and Post Office supporters attempted to prevent the pending closures of some Post Offices. One of the more dramatic moments was when the space shuttle flew for the last time en route to a museum in Los Angeles atop a modified 747. -Photos by Terry Miller

If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale.
