Identity Theft Crackdown

by IRS The Internal Revenue Service and the Justice Department today announced the results of a massive national sweep cracking down on suspected identity theft perpetrators as part of a stepped-up effort against refund fraud and identity theft.

Working with the Justice Department’s Tax Division and local U.S. Attorneys’ offices, the nationwide effort targeted 105 people in 23 states. The coast-to-coast effort took place over the last week and included indictments, arrests and the execution of search warrants involving the potential theft of thousands of identities and taxpayer refunds. In all, 939 criminal charges are included in the 69 indictments and informations related to identity theft.

Turning Rotten?

By Dorothy Denne How long does it take for a day to change from good to rotten? It really depends on your sense of humor, or lack of one for that matter. Probably more on your lack of one.

If you have one that is good, your day is less likely to turn bad.

It isn't really fair to call a day bad. Bad things may happen during the day but the day itself should be considered a gift. We are on our own to enjoy our gift or not.

Sometimes outside forces make it difficult.

I'm not talking about the really tragic outside forces that cause real pain, either emotional or physical. I believe there are dif-

ferent ways of dealing with them too but, for today, I'm just concerned with the everyday little rotten things that seem like big rotten things.

Like today I decided the only thing as dangerous as old ladies with shopping carts are young ladies with strollers. They both gawk when they walk. They don't steer.

They just gawk and push.

You know what happens then.

What about the drivers who don't know where they are going. Every driveway they slow to a near stop then shoot on to the next one before you can pass. Then they spot their target, pull way over to the left and then turn right into their desired driveway.

You've survived to arrive at the parking lot entrance you want. Oncoming traffic is clear so you follow the guy in front of you across the lane and into the entrance. He

stops right inside to decide which way he wants to go.

Your rear end is still sticking out into the street. If you're lucky he moves before you get moved.

You have to go the post office. You don't need any stamps or anything. You just have to mail a couple of bills so the drive-through will do just fine. There is a line of cars but they usually move quickly. That's part of the idea. A couple of the cars go through just fine.

You're getting closer.

The guy who just arrived at the boxes can't decide which one to put his mail in so he reads the pick-up time on all of them. He discovers they are all the same.

Then he has to check that he put a stamp on each envelope. All is well so he pulls out but nicks the edge of the cement platform. His car swerves and the pedestrian coming along side has to jump out of the way.

This unnerves the gal in front of you. She doesn't want to hit the platform so she pulls over a bit. Now she can't reach the slot. She opens the door, careful not to hit the mailbox with it. She puts one leg out then reaches with all her might. She gives a thrust and her mail slips into the slot. Except one envelope. It falls under the mailbox.

She can't get the door open far enough to get out of the car. You're no spring chicken but you're younger than she so you feel obligated to help. You unfasten your seatbelt, get out and retrieve her letter.

She really is grateful. So is everyone behind you.

You're finally on your way. Your shopping is done, your mail is mailed.

You're half way through your day. It is a gift. It doesn't have to turn rotten. It depends on your sense of humor, or lack of one.

Supervisor Michael D. Antonovich announced a $2,500,000 County grant program to replant trees in parts of the San Gabriel Valley devastated by the December 2011 windstorm.

Grants of up to $100,000 will be awarded competitively to cities, other public agencies and nonprofit organizations that partner with public agencies. Grant guidelines allow for trees to be planted in parks and public open spaces as well as in parkways along residential and commercial streets.

line has been set for May 31st for applicants to develop comprehensive replanting programs. Grants should be awarded this summer allowing for tree planting as early as this fall or winter. Priority will be given to the grant proposals demonstrating the greatest need.

Komen Foundation Drops Planned Parenthood Dear Editor: I wanted to share some extremely discouraging news from a partner and longtime ally for women's health.

The Susan G. Komen for the Cure Foundation has announced that it will stop supporting lifesaving breast cancer screening for low-income and underserved women at Planned Parenthood health centers.

It's a deeply disappointing decision — made even more alarming because politically motivated groups and individuals determined to undermine women's access to care appear to have successfully intimidated the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Foundation to withdraw this critical support.

Over the past five years, Komen funds have enabled Planned Parenthood health centers to provide nearly 170,000 clinical breast exams and referrals for more than 6,400 mammograms. These cancer detection and prevention

We know our opponents put their ideology over women's health and lives. What we never expected is that an ally like the Komen Foundation would choose to listen to them.

But as troubling as that decision is, it's not what I'm most worried about today.

The grants that the Komen Foundation is ending go to Planned Parenthood health centers that provide cancer screenings to women who often have no other place to turn for care. We are determined to make sure that these women can continue to get the care they need — and, as always, that means we are counting on you.

To the Editor: Is the Independent just another corporate-dominated, politically correct newspaper?

That’s the question I asked myself after looking at the FrontPage photo of Assemblyman Anthony Portantino, speaking at a pressconference to launch a fellowship program for students from Historically Black Colleges and Universities (“Portantino Joins University of California to Announce Summer Leadership Fellowship for HBCUs,” January 26, 2012).

“I am very excited about the launch of the summer fellowship for emerging

leaders,” said Portantino. “It was an idea that came from community members in my district and I am very pleased to have facilitated this into an outstanding educational opportunity.”

Portantino threw a bone to the African-American community, knowing that no one in the press (including the Independent) would ask him why he voted last year for the California Dream Act, which puts undocumented students (read: illegal immigrants) in line for $65 million worth of Cal-Grants, fee waivers and textbook vouchers.

In 2010, Portantino told me at a La Canada City

Council meeting that the Dream Act would not displace citizens or legal residents (or, he might have added, the 25 undergraduates who will be picked for the fellowship program). Never mind that California Community Colleges Chancellor Jack Scott told the Los Angeles Times that 140,000 students did not enroll in college because they could not get into classes (“Just Call Them College Students in Waiting,” October 4, 2010).

And Anthony Portantino believes that illegal immigrants deserve to be at the head of the line?

by victor buell Despite the closure of two Acapulco restaurants in Pasadena and Monrovia, hungry chow-hounds looking for a Mexican food fix can still get a giant burrito, a stuffed soft taco, or a cheesy enchilada just around the corner at Arcadia’s Original Peppers Mexican Grill and Cantina. This family-owned and family-oriented grill is nestled in its tree-lined grounds as if it grew there organically. Inside you will find a spacious and sprawling dining area and comfortable sports bar where you can slide into a booth and enjoy items from the full menu. The menu is lengthy, and the portions are very large, so expect to leave stuffed or with a to-go box.

orado Place, Arcadia, Peppers has been serving the area for almost 40 years Chef Amador Cortez, has been running the kitchen for over 30 years, and many of the staff has been employed at Peppers for a decade or more. The only newbies to be found are the owners, who took over in 2011 and are smart enough to know not to alter a thing about this timeestablished location. “People keep saying ‘I know you changed something,’ but we haven’t—except for the tortilla chips which are lighter and crispier.” So insists co-owner Virginia Disegna, “everything else is exactly how it’s been. Our regulars have been coming here for years, many ordering the same items for years, and we want to make sure they stay happy.”

I went over the menu

for ten minutes before settling on a combo chicken and steak fajita platter. It was massive, served sizzling with peppers and onions and mushrooms, a side of grilled poblano peppers, rice, beans, homemade guacamole, sour cream, pico de gallo, and three kinds of salsa (by the way, the house salsa is excellent—just saying). The dish was very fresh and flavorful, and I ended up taking so much of it home it took me two tries to finish it off. I brought a cheese quesadilla back to the office for Terry, who raved as well, and was surprised to get rice, beans, and salsa included.

There is something for everyone on the big menu, including a full seafood section, two-dozen house specialties, appetizers, soups, salads, burgers, steaks, ribs,

and of course burritos, tacos, tamales, enchiladas, tostadas, quesadillas and chimichangas—available with almost any combination of fillings.

Happy hour starts every weekday at 3pm til 6pm, and Peppers boasts the best margaritas in town.

I’ll go back to confirm that another day, but after everything I have seen I think it’s probably accurate.

Also consider “Taco Tuesdays” where for $5 you get two street tacos and a domestic beer all day long.

For our readers who were saddened by the closures of the local Acapulco, or anyone else out there looking for a satisfying Mexican meal, Peppers will take great care of you.

Just be forewarned—you might still be eating there for the next 30 years.

Sage Advice My day started with a phone call from my neighbor. Her car had gotten broken into in their driveway the night before. I was shocked.

That stuff doesn’t happen here.

On that same day came the news that an ocean liner had sunk. Sunk, like the Titanic? I was shocked. That never happens.

But that wasn’t all. I accidentally cut myself with a paring knife. It was one shockingly bad thing after another.

It was becoming too stressful. I needed to go unwind, recharge my battery.

So I leashed up my lovable Labrador, Bullet and headed to the hiking trails for a relaxing hike. After spending time by the stream in the warm sun I was ready to take on the world again.

When I started heading back, about 40 feet in front of me, coming up was a large man huffing and puffing.

Immediately, and very unlab-like, the hairs on Bullet’s back stood straight up. Dogs are smarter than we are. Bullet sensed something about

By Leslie Frieberger this guy. He started barking at him. To me it seemed to be for no reason. But with one swift move the man in the sweaty t-shirt pulled out a knife and flashed it at Bullet.

I was shocked.

“Are you @#$%# kidding me? I come up here to relax and you pull a knife?

On a woman and a Labrador?”

“You betcha! I hate dogs.” He barked and continued his trek up. I stood, seething. “Good dog Bullet.”

Then I shouted, “Yeah big shot. What is that anyway, a Swiss Army Knife?”

I looked at my watch.

Did I have enough time to run up the trail, give him a piece of my mind and still make it back in time to pick my kids up from school? I could take him. Although… he did have a knife, albeit a small one. And I do only weigh a tad over 100 pounds.

I didn’t give into my Irish temper.

Instead I told the first group of hikers I saw coming up the trail, a chivalrous group of young men, “Better be careful. There’s a psycho

up there and he pulled a knife on me!” With each new group, the weapon got bigger, and bigger. By the time I made it down to civilization a deranged psychopath was wielding a machete. I felt better now, knowing he would have to confront this angry mob coming down.

What was going on?

This was a horror. Of course, it was Friday the 13th. Desperate times call for desperate measures. The only protection I could think of was the old folklore of burning sage to ward off evil spirits. Inside my own garden I armed myself with clippers and a match. Alas I didn’t have sage, so I used rosemary. I lit some and danced around in a voodoo trance.

Within minutes my phone rang. It was my neighbor who had been burglarized. Our wonderful Sierra Madre Police had apprehended the thieves and recovered her belongings.

Life was returning to normal.

So now I’m good until the next Friday the 13th.

April 13! Tax time! I better buy some sage seeds quick.

Traveling World War I Exhibition Slated for Pasadena Visit Feb 2 As we approach the 100th Anniversary of World War I, more attention being given to the “war to end all wars” – especially with Spielberg's Academy Award-nominated "War Horse" in theatres now.

And a wonderful event to honor WWI veterans – and all veterans since – is on its way to Pasadena: The Traveling World War I Exhibition will be in Pasadena, just north of the Pasadena City Hall on Thurgood Marshall Street, on Thursday, February 2, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. It is open FREE to the public – and is designed to honor veterans, as well as raise awareness and funds for cultural institutions as it travels across the U.S. Pasadena marks the Traveling WWI Exhibition's 33rd stop on a national 75-city tour.

Department of Community Services and Development (CSD) Interim Director John A. Wagner today joined California Senator Carol Liu (D-La CañadaFlintridge), California State Board of Equalization Chairman Jerome E. Horton, and other officials at the Foothill Unity Center, Inc. in Monrovia, CA to highlight free tax

services that are available to working Californians on National Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) Awareness Day. “The EITC program is one of the largest and most successful antipoverty programs in the nation, but not all eligible Californians take advantage of this opportunity to put money back in their

pockets,” said CSD Interim Director Wagner. “Today we are urging all eligible Californians to file a tax return and claim the tax benefits already earned through EITC. When federal refunds are claimed, low-income, working families win, California businesses win and the local economy wins.”

CSD is working with

state and local partners to increase EITC awareness and help working Californians take advantage of the EITC. This includes partnering with the Office of Senator Carol Liu (D-La Cañada-Flintridge) on a targeted campaign to increase the number of Californians who file their federal income tax returns and claim the EITC. “At a time when families are struggling, the EITC can help them make ends meet,” said Senator Liu. “Too often families don’t know about the program and miss out on the benefits. We can prevent this by making sure eligible families and individuals are aware that they qualify for the EITC and where they can find income tax preparation assistance to claim it.”

More than 30 CSD partnering community based organizations are offering tax and EITC services during the 2012 tax season. Many of these organizations work to fill in service gaps in areas throughout the state and partner with other local agencies to offer these services, includ-

ing Foothill Unity Center, Inc. in Los Angeles County.

“For a very low income family, receiving an Earned Income Tax Credit of $2,000 or more can be a life-changing event – one that helps them move back to self-sufficiency,” said Foothill Unity Center, Inc. Executive Director Joan Whitenack.

“Because those dollars will be spent in the community, they also help the local economy, meaning more people keep their jobs.”

In 2010, 40,000 lowincome Californians participated in tax preparation programs offered by more than 45 community based organizations that partner with CSD. In aggregate, these participants claimed over $46 million in any type of federal or state tax credit.

“Earned Income Tax Credit National Awareness Day kicks off the national effort to provide Voluntary Income Tax Assistance to every eligible resident in the United States,” said Chairman Jerome E. Horton.

“The Board of Equalization

is committed to doing our part in California and in particular the Greater Los Angeles area to lift families and individuals across our state out of poverty while simultaneously stimulating our local economy.”

EITC is a refundable federal income tax credit that helps low to moderate income working individuals and families keep more of what they earn. According to the IRS, over 26 million people nationwide kept nearly $59 billion of what they earned through EITC in 2011. These figures include nearly 3 million people from California claiming almost $6.5 billion in EITC. The average EITC amount claimed in California was $2,229, but a qualifying family could receive as much as $5,751.

Those earning under $49,078 should see if they qualify for an EITC refund by going online to WWW. IRS.GOV/EITC, or by contacting a local volunteer assistance site.

Area Residents Outraged with PUC and Southern California Edison Power Poles Allegedly Overloaded with Cables

The December 1 windstorm may have seemed mild by comparison to some of the anger vented

by San Gabriel Valley residents in Temple City last Thursday night.

250 people attended the Public Utilities Commision hearing at Temple City High School hall Thursday night as part of the agency's investigation into SC Edison's response to the Nov.30 and Dec.1 major

windstorms which wreaked havock to the San Gabriel Valley.

At one point, a resident so distraught over the lack of information and the time involved, refused to accept thje PUC’s decision to take a break and demanded that they get on with the business at hand. The unnamed resident was asked by Marcis Nixon , a PUC employee, to settle down and eventually the Los Angeles Sher-

iff’s deputies were called to control the situation. The resident said “ am I under arrest for being upset about this?” To which the officer said “ no sir.” The tense moment lasted but a few minutes but illustrated the extreme frustration many residents have with Edison regarding not only the lack on information but also the time involved in getting power back.

Assemblyman Anthony Portantino, D-Pasadena, said that "a lack of reliable information was the single biggest" complaint he heard from residents facing windstorm outages.

Without outages over a week in some areas it was easy to see why residents wanted answers to why their claims have fallen on deaf ears. " I've been very reliable about paying my bill every month, very reliable; and when I need you the most, after 50 years, you're not there," said Temple City resident Giovanna Billotti.

Billotti's son was forced to go to hospital after he received no help or information from Edison.

PUC President Michael R. Peevey said the commission is "deadly serious about this service breakdown" and wanted to hear from impacted customers.

The PUC reported earlier this month that as many as one-third of the Edison poles that went down during the windstorm were heavily overloaded with cables and equipment – this could bring potential fines of up to $50,000 per day for Edison.

Temple City Mayor Tom Chavez , who was listening intently to the meeting was advised by Malibu resident Hans Laetz to “watch out” as Edison still hasn’t settled claims from 2 years ago .

Many residents’ frustration was simply with the fact that Edison did not keep them informed about the progress of the repairs.

Tom Hanks Film is Extremely Sentimental but Done Incredibly Well Film Review By Michael James Gonzalez 9/11 may just be an eleven-year old memory to most of us who were not directly affected, but, if nothing else, the new film “Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close” is a vital reminder of the families who were in fact affected by the death of 2,977 loved ones on that fateful day. The film is based on a novel by Jonathan Safran Foer (“Everything is Illuminated”) and doesn’t so much focus on the day itself but on one, special, nine-year old child who has lost his father in the Twin Towers.

Oskar (Thomas Horn) is a smart, precocious kid with a mild form of Asperger’s Syndrome who stumbles upon a key that belonged to his father (Tom Hanks). Inquisitive as he is, and desiring to

find answers to questions that are not fully realized, Oskar embarks on a New York City-wide journey to find the lock that this key might open.

All of Hanks’ scenes are shown in flashbacks, where we see the loving father devise hide-and-seek games in Central Park so that Oskar might become more social with people. In what is probably the most moving scene of the film, Hanks speaks to the family’s answering machine while trapped at the top of the World Trade Center.

Sandra Bullock plays Hanks’ widow and Oskar’s mother in yet another stand-out performance. It is through her that the grief of losing a loved one to 9/11 is made palpable.

She is heroic in her portrayal

of a woman struggling to be a good mother to a difficult child while dealing with the tragic loss of her husband. For most of the movie, however, we follow Oskar throughout New York City as he meets different working-class citizens who have also experienced loss of some form or another. Here the film lacks screenwriter Eric Roth’s taut storytelling found in previous films like “The Insider,” “Munich,” and “Forest Gump,” as it starts to get a little dull and talky for a while without any forward motion. But the acting and subject matter are interesting enough to make the movie a worthwhile experience up until its emotional ending.

Andy served the citizens of Arcadia with honor and distinction for nearly 30 years, retiring from the Arcadia Fire Department in 2009 after being diagnosed with advanced stage colon cancer.

Andy’s smile and sense of humor endeared him quickly to all who crossed his path. His greatest love was his family. He married the love of his life, Debbie (Clark) in 1986 and had three sons, Clark, Chad and Clint. He also loved animals, especially his dogs Cocoa and Gigi. Andy’s interests included model trains, fishing, baseball, football, hockey, weightlifting and bicycle riding. Andy enjoyed cook-

ing Italian food using family recipes and was a barbeque expert.

Andy is predeceased by his mother, Evelyn, and his brother, Steven. He is survived by his wife of 25 years, Debbie, and their three sons, Clark (22), Chad (20), and Clint (17), his father, Steve, sister, Paula, in-laws Robert and Diane Clark, brothers-in law, nieces and nephews.

Lives Remembered Edwin Paul Schreiner, 68 Edwin “Ed” Schreiner (68) passed away peacefully at home on January 21, 2012 after a short battle with cancer. Ed was born on June 5, 1943 at St. Luke’s Hospital in Altadena and spent his entire life in Arcadia raising a family, working, owning businesses, and volunteering his time and skills to the community. Ed served in the Army National Guard and later graduated from the Rio Hondo Police Academy, serving as an Arcadia Police Reserve Officer from 1983-1991.

As a businessman and Reserve Officer, he was involved with the Youth Safety Run sponsored by the Police Advisory Council for Car Clubs (PACCC). Ed owned the Arco Service Station at Foothill and Santa Anita from 1971 - 1984. He spent a decade as a float mechanic for the Pasadena Tournament of Roses and most recently worked for

the Arcadia School District.

Dedicated to the Arcadia High School music program and known as Mr. Fix-it, Ed fabricated

customized instrument and uniform racks, furnished his personal trailer for transporting equipment, and extensively supported the percussion section, serving on the pit crew and traveling to regional and national competitions.

For many years, during the

holidays, Ed delivered donated items collected from Arcadia Unified School District families to the White Mountain Apache Tribe in Arizona, building goodwill, and ultimately developing a bond with Apache people who welcomed him, sharing special ceremonies and cultural traditions.

Ed is survived by his wife of 45 years, Terry, daughters Anne (Michelle Hoy), Sandra, Carol (Rick Brandt) and Sarah, granddaughters Deanna, Samantha and Sara Gelfand, his sister Deborah Lee Schmidt, and his loyal dog, Duke, along with many relatives and friends.

A celebration of Ed’s life will be held on Sunday, February 12, 2012, at 1 p.m. in the Arcadia High School North Gym. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Arcadia High School and designated for the Ed Schreiner Percussion Scholarship.

Michael Leroy Delgatto Michael Leroy Delgatto passed away Friday, January 27, 2012, in Monrovia, California. He was born on April 1, 1962, in Arcadia, California. He was the loving son of Vera and Joe Delgatto, brother of Tony and (Ginny) Delgatto, uncle of Angela and (Jimmy) Arms, Lucy, Vinny, and Frankie Delgatto, and brother of Maryann Griffin. POLICE BLOTTERS Arcadia PD

For the period of Sunday, January 1st, through Saturday, January 7th, the Police Department responded to 748 calls for service of which 96 required formal investigations. The following is a summary report of the major incidents handled by the Department during this period.

Sunday, January 1: At about 2:10 a.m., an officer conducted an enforcement stop on a vehicle for a broken headlight and lane swerving on Santa Anita Avenue at Colorado Boulevard. Upon contact with the driver, the officer detected an odor of alcohol emitting from his person.

An investigation revealed the 20-year-old Hispanic male was under the influence of alcohol, and he was arrested for DUI. At approximately 2:52 p.m., an officer responded to the Arcadia Police Department front counter in regards to a fraud report.

While reviewing her online statements, the victim discovered one of her checks had been altered. After the victim mailed her check, an unknown suspect(s) obtained the check and cashed it for a different amount.

Further investigation revealed a Black female suspect was arrested for check fraud by the El Monte Police Department. A DMV check revealed this suspect lived a short distance away from the location where the victim mailed her check.

Monday, January 2: Shortly after 11:40 a.m., an officer responded to Arcadia Gardens Retirement Home, 720 West Camino Real Avenue, in regards to a possible fraud report. The victim received a telephone call from an unknown male subject who informed him that he won 13 million dollars from a sweepstakes he had entered, and needed to pay a fee in order to receive his prize money. The victim mailed the check and never received any prizes. The suspect called a second time requesting an additional fee, at which time the victim realized it was a scam. He is desirous of prosecution.

Around 3:29 p.m., officers were dispatched to JC Penney at the Santa Anita Mall, 400 South Baldwin Avenue, in regards to two male adults in custody for theft.

The suspects concealed

merchandise inside their clothing and exited the store without making payment. The 18-year-old and 19-year-old Chinese males were transported to the Arcadia City Jail for booking without incident.

Tuesday, January 3: At approximately 1:42 p.m., an officer was driving north on Santa Anita Avenue at Wheeler Avenue, and observed a suspicious vehicle driving west on Wheeler Avenue.

The driver saw the officer and began to drive in reverse, east toward First Avenue, in attempt to get away. The subject abandoned his car in the Denny’s parking lot, 7 East Huntington Drive, and fled on foot through multiple businesses. Assisting officers detained the suspect in the Domenico’s parking lot, 251 North Santa Anita Avenue. An investigation revealed the subject ran from police for no apparent reason. He was released without further delay.

Sometime in the morning hours, unknown suspect(s) attempted to force entry into the master bedroom of a residence in the 000 block of East Camino Real Avenue. When the victim returned home she observed the door frame was damaged. Officers determined the alarm was activated and the suspect(s) fled undetected. No property was reported missing.

Wednesday, January 4: Shortly after 10:00 a.m., an officer conducted a license plate look up on a black Chevrolet Tahoe as he was driving south on Second Avenue, north of Huntington Drive. The officer discovered the vehicle had a warrant attached and conducted a traffic stop.

An investigation revealed the warrant was valid and the driver was never issued a license. The 25-year-old Hispanic male was arrested and transported to the Arcadia City Jail for booking.

At about 8:42 p.m., an officer responded to the Macy’s parking lot at the Santa Anita Mall, 400 South Baldwin Avenue, in reference to an auto burglary. After the victim returned from work, she discovered unknown suspect(s) stole her factory navigation system and third row seat. Officers did not locate any signs of forced entry and no one saw or heard anything suspicious.

Thursday, January 5:

Around 11:35 a.m., an officer was dispatched to the 000 block of California Street, in regards to a mail theft. The victim observed a female adult approach her front porch and walk away carrying her package that was just delivered. The suspect entered a brown 1980’s four-door sedan, which was parked in front of the victim’s house. The victim attempted to chase after the suspect; however, the vehicle fled northbound on Second Avenue.

An area check proved negative. The suspect is described as a White female with long blonde hair, about 5’7”, 135 lbs., wearing a white or pink colored shirt with a dark sweater tied around her waist, and blue pants.

Shortly after 6:09 p.m., an officer was dispatched to Santa Anita Avenue and Las Flores Avenue, in regards to a three-party traffic accident. A driver was traveling southbound on Santa Anita Avenue while two other parties were stopped ahead of him. The driver did not stop in time and struck the rear end of party two, who then moved forward and rear-ended party three. No major injuries were reported.

Friday, January 6: At approximately 1:42 a.m., an officer responded to AMC Theaters at the Santa Anita Mall, 400 South Baldwin Avenue, in regards to a movie piracy report. A male adult was observed video-taping a movie with his cellular phone. The 21-year-old male of unknown race was arrested for Movie Piracy and transported to the Arcadia City Jail for booking.

At about 5:27 p.m., an officer responded to the Santa Anita Mall, 400 South Baldwin Avenue, in reference to a sexual battery investigation. A juvenile victim was standing in the food court area, and was approached by an unknown suspect who grabbed her buttocks.

The victim attempted to move away, however the suspect continued to follow her. When the victim yelled for help, she was assisted by mall security and the suspect fled in an unknown direction. An area check for the suspect met with negative results.

The suspect is described as a White male adult, 20 to 30-years-old, about 5’6” tall, 300 lbs., with long

straight shoulder-length brown hair, wearing a gray zip-up hooded sweater and blue jeans.

Saturday, January 7: Between 2:00 p.m. and 7:30 p.m., a theft occurred at West Coast Elite Gymnastics, 900 South Santa Anita Avenue. When the victim went to retrieve her purse from a shelf, she discovered it was missing. No one observed anything suspicious. The victim has no idea who may have taken her property.

Around 8:08 p.m., an officer was dispatched to Sephora at the Santa Anita Mall, 400 South Baldwin Avenue, in regards to a female juvenile detained for theft. The suspect concealed multiple items inside a used shopping bag and exited the store without making payment. Further investigation revealed the suspect was in possession of burglary tools. The 17-year-old Chinese female was arrested and transported to the Arcadia City Jail for booking.

Monrovia PD

Assault with a Deadly Weapon / Criminal Threats - Suspect Arrested On January 16 at 11:52 a.m., officers responded to a residence in the 100 block of West Cherry regarding a suspect making verbal threats to his family.

The suspect has recently obtained a handgun and has been wearing it in his waistband. During recent arguments he has threatened to shoot them and has shown the weapon.

After once again being threatened, the suspect’s brother found the loaded gun hidden in their parent’s room. He took the gun and locked it up.

The next day when the suspect went to retrieve the gun and realized it was gone, he became irate and threatened the family with a stool, which he dropped and then retrieved a knife from the kitchen counter.

He then threatened the family with the knife. The

victims went into their bedroom, locked the door and called police. Officers arrived and were able to arrest the suspect without further incident.

Theft Suspect Arrested. On January 17 at 3 p.m., a Monrovia High School teacher reported her cell phone had been stolen. She left the phone unattended near a practice field. She was able to activate a GPS feature which indicated the stolen phone was at a residence in the 100 block of East Los Angeles. Officers responded, were able to recover the phone and arrested the 16-year-old suspect.

Grand Theft Auto Motorcycle On January 17 at 6 p.m., a red and white-colored Honda dirt bike with no plates was stolen from the 500 block of West Duarte between 6 and 8 p.m. A 1990’s, dark green minivan, possibly a Ford or Chevy, was seen in the area. The vehicle was driven by a male White subject, approximately 50 years old, medium build, with a brown mustache and goatee. Investigation continuing.

Traffic Collision Vehicle versus Bicyclist On January 18 at 1:43 p.m., a female juvenile on a bicycle was on her way home from school. She was traveling west on Duarte Road, crossing at Alamitas, when she was struck by a vehicle.

The driver was stopped on Duarte Road, turning south onto Alamitas. The bicyclist was on the sidewalk and entered the crosswalk, but the driver was looking towards his left and never saw the bicyclist enter the crosswalk. The impact knocked the juvenile off her bike, causing minor visible injuries. As a precaution, since the juvenile was not wearing a helmet, she was transported to a hospital by ambulance. Her parents were notified and responded to the hospital.

Prowling / Possession of Burglary Tools- Suspect Arrested. On January 19 at 2:27 a.m., a resident in the 300 block of Shadow Lane reported seeing a male subject using a flashlight to look into parked vehicles.

The subject ran when he saw police cars approaching. Officers conducted a yard-to-yard search and found the suspect hiding

in a backyard. He was arrested for prowling and possessing burglary tools.

Found Child On January 19 at 3:58 p.m., officers were flagged down regarding a 2-year-old child walking alone in the 300 block of North Grand. Officers were able to determine that the child lives at a residence in the 400 block of East Greystone. Her grandmother is currently her guardian, as the child’s mother was recently taken into custody. At the time of the mother’s arrest, a referral to the Department of Child and Family Services was generated. This incident was reported to the Department of Child and Family Services worker.

Commercial Burglary - Suspect Arrested On January 19 at 8:51 p.m., officers responded to a business in the 700 block of East Huntington regarding a male subject who stole merchandise. An officer saw a subject walking on Huntington who matched the description of the suspect. As the officer attempted to contact the suspect, he ran. The officer gave chase, detained the suspect, and he was arrested for burglary. The suspect had apparently committed the same crime two days prior.

Vehicle Burglary On January 20 at 1:05 a.m., officers were dispatched to a residence in the 700 block of South Alta Vista on the report of a burglary that had just occurred. The victim’s van was parked and locked on the street.

The victim’s wife heard the van door open and told the victim, who went out to investigate. He saw a male subject near the rear doors of his van. The suspect ran to a vehicle and fled in a possible 1990’s, black Honda Civic. The suspect had punched out the rear door lock to gain entry to the van and took an electric sander. The suspect is described as a male, wearing dark clothing and either a mask or bandana over his face. Investigation continuing.

Driving Under the Influence On January 20 at 4:25 a.m., an officer on patrol drove by a vehicle parked in the 300 block of West Foothill and saw a subject slumped over the steering wheel.

The vehicle was running, it was in drive, and the subject would not respond to

POLICE BLOTTERS his knocking. Eventually, the subject woke up and the vehicle moved forward, but stopped shortly. After investigation, the subject was arrested for driving under the influence.

Theft from a Vehicle On January 21, several thefts from vehicles occurred overnight. The thefts occurred in the 200 block of North Alta Vista, 200 block of West Lime, 400 block of Concord, and the 300 block of North Mayflower. All of the thefts appear to have occurred in the early morning hours and in most of the incidents the vehicles were left unlocked. The items taken were cash, electronic items, gift cards, and miscellaneous items that were left in the vehicles. Investigation continuing.

Grand Theft Auto On January 21 at 8 a.m., a vehicle was reported stolen from a residence in the 1300 block of South Alta Vista.

The vehicle is a black, 2000 Honda Civic and was taken sometime during the night.

The vehicle has yellow fog lights on the front and a rear spoiler. Investigation continuing.

Attempt Murder Suspect Arrested On January 22 at 5:53 p.m., dispatch received a call reporting a stabbing victim at a residence in the 1200 block of Encino.

Officers responded to the location and discovered a male adult with a puncture wound to his chest. The suspect violated a restraining order and entered the home of his estranged wife with a hunting type knife and stabbed her male com-

panion one time in the chest. The suspect then left the location.

The investigation led officers to a hotel in the 900 block of West Huntington Drive. Officers immediately contained the hotel room with the assistance of two Irwindale police officers.

Officers directed the clerk to make a telephone call into the suspect’s room to tell him that his credit card was declined and he needed to go to the office and resolve the problem. The suspect did not indicate if he was going to leave his room, but approximately 15 minutes later he exited his room and was taken into custody without further incident. The victim was taken to a hospital, where he was admitted in critical, but stable, condition.

Detective Bureau Case Follow-up Update: 2010 Armed Robbery - Suspect Arrested On December 28, 2010, an armed robbery occurred at a liquor store in the 400 block of West Duarte Road at approximately 8:45 p.m.

Three suspects wearing ski masks entered the store.

Two of the suspects walked behind the counter and one of them punched the clerk. The clerk fled into the store and was followed by the suspect. This suspect had a small chrome handgun and demanded money from the clerk. When the clerk said he didn’t have any, the second suspect took the cash register and all three suspects fled to a waiting vehicle, driven by a fourth suspect.

On January 18, a suspect was arrested by the Los An-

geles Sheriff’s Department Homicide Bureau for a murder committed in Lynwood. During the lengthy interview, the suspect admitted to committing the armed robbery at the liquor store in Monrovia, along with two additional suspects. The Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department Major Crimes Division is taking over the investigation and prosecution of the armed robbery case.

Sierra Madre PD

Sunday, January 22nd: 12:35 AM- Warrant Arrest, 100 blk. N. Rosemead Blvd.

Officers conducted a consent stop on two subjects.

One subject was on probation for drug violations and the second subject had recently been arrested for forgery.A records check revealed $150,000 in warrants for one of the subjects. The subject was arrested and transported to Temple Sheriff’s station.

The driver was driving on a suspended/revoked driver’s license with service needed. The driver was cited and released in the field and the vehicle was released to a licensed driver.

The San Marino Guild of Huntington Memorial Hospital announces the 44th season of entertainment with its 2012 San Marino Celebrity Series. The popular Dr. Elliot Engel opens the lineup of events with "Happy 200th Birthday Charles Dickens" on Sunday, February 12 at 4:00 at the San Marino Center, 1800 Huntington Drive, San Marino.

Returning for his 19th season and back by popular demand, this favorite professor, author, scholar and lecturer always delights his audiences as he entertains and educates using anecdotes and

humor to illustrate new insights into the lives of his subjects. Dr. Engel will explore the world of Dickens, his unique imagination, and why he is recognized as the greatest novelist in the English language. Engel's mini-lecture series on Dickens appeared on PBS-TV stations across the country. He is a gifted speaker who enjoys chatting with his audience after the presentation.

Elliot Engel earned his B.A. at Indiana University and his M.A. and Ph.D. as a Woodrow Wilson Fellow at UCLA, where he won the Outstanding Teacher Award.

He has written ten books, and lectured all over the world.

For over 30 years Dr. Engel has been President of the Dickens Fellowship of North Carolina. His promotion of Charles Dickens during this period has led to his recent induction into the Royal Society of Arts in England.

Music of Elton John Keeps Kenny Metcalf Alive and Well

Two weeks ago at the NAMM show (National Association of Music Merchants) in Anaheim there was a plethora of musical talent. The range was gargantuan. One, however, which piqued Beacon Media’s interest was the Elton John tribute band starring Kenny Metcalf as Elton.

The guy IS Elton John…in a sequin outfit sporting a Dodgers baseball bat and logo on his sequinned jumpsuit. It’s astonishing… he appeared to have the energy, flamboyance and remarkable talent of the early Elton John as he hurried to the grand piano. He waves to his adoring fans as the opening number prepares him for his first song as Elton John.

Elton -The Early Years is a show that is not like any of the other tribute show...

This tribute band really has captured the early sounds og Elton John as he was rising to superstardom.

Four years ago, a long time friend encouraged Kenny Metcalf to do an Elton John tribute, since tributes have been building steam and playing respectable venues and not the long bar scene shows for little or no pay.

Metcalf thought long and hard about it because he was no longer physically able to hold down a regular job due to a rare autoimmune disease that almost took his life when he turned 46. Pemphigus Vulgarus is that atypical disease, and according to doctors, Kenny is a miracle since they have as of yet found no cure for the disease or explanation of his quick about-face from death’s door.

Perhaps it’s the spirit of the music Kenny performs that’s keeping him alive and giving hope to his friends and family not to mention his

lyal following. Metcalf, is not out of the medical woods yet, but knowing that the only thing he could possibly do is play music- Elton John’s music, expecially – it really is therapy.

He decided to give it a try and started to study Elton's voice of his 1970 body of work. He recorded Goodbye Yellow Brick Road and found he was so close to Elton's voice and tone, he decided to give it a shot.

He spent the next 13 months creating lavish reproductions of Elton's costumes, blinging everything himself, from clothes to microphones - Metcalf worked with long time friend Jeff Coulson in designing a baby grand piano shell that was lightweight and would hold his 88 key digital keyboard. "You can't be Elton if you are playing a keyboard on stage", it has to look like a real piano said Metcalf.

Coulson made the replica shell to piano specs, only weighing in at about 150lbs. but with all the beauty and realism of a real baby grand.

Jeff went into business after making Kenny's baby grand and called his company "Grand Illusions Piano Shells". They are a huge hit andnow selling as fast as he can make them.

Every detail of Elton - The Early Years- tribute show has been painstakingly recreated even down to all the band wearing costumes to recreate that image of the 70's of an Elton John Show.

They have also gone so far as to recreate each song to sound as if you were listening to the vinyl. It's like watching Elton at the Troubadour in smaller halls, but also like seeing him in stadium concerts when they play festivals and fairs.

When they launched the show, at Hermosa Pier

festival , 4,000 people experienced the legend. Since then they have headlined O.C. Fair twice . Club Nokia with The Fab Four Beatle tribute as well as casino's and Universities .

"We all get along like a family", said Metcalf..” we love to perform for people and with each other.”

Metcalf says he’s not listened to other music in 4 years because “ I don't want to forget how to sound like Elton (it's continual work).. I don't want Kenny Metcalf's voice slipping out.. I want it to be Elton's voice they hear.”

Kenny Metcalf is Elton John. Mark Servi is lead guitarist as Davey Johnstone.

Isaac Johnson is second lead guitarist as Caleb Quaye.

Bobby HQ Storm is the bass player as Dee Murray.

Michael Thompson is our drummer as Nigel Olsson.

Sharlene Griffith (owner/ manager) and backing singer. Stefanie Hult & Shauna Porter are the other backing singers.

In the 80's Kenny Metcalf toured as the original "LIVE" tour keyboardist for Stryper, a heavy metal Christian rock band. He toured from 1985-86. He left the group to stay home and raise his kids and strengthen his relationship with his wife Evelyn.

Later through the years he was a studio musician, studio engineer, as well as singer song writer, and even A&R for Javamusic.com in the year 2000.

Metcalf engineered recordings for such artists as Leon Patillo (singer for Santana), Darrell Mansfield (blues harmonica hall of famer), Contemporary Christian singer Bryan Duncan, and Chi Coltrane, and many others.

Apparently TapiaGonzalez’ realease on her own recognizance on a misdemeanor charge was unexpected. Monrovia detectives are trying to find out why she was released on OR when there is a felony charge among others against the suspect.

On Friday, January 27, 2012, at 3:51 p.m., the Monrovia Police Department received a call of an injury traffic collision at Huntington Drive and Canyon Blvd Officers determined an twelveyear-old female had attempted to cross the road and had been struck by a passing car. The child was severely injured and is now hospitalized at Children’s Hospital in Los Angeles. Witnesses observed a pearl white Infinity, possibly a 2004, j30 model or a similar vehicle, strike the child. The driver fled without stopping at the scene, continuing west on Huntington, south on Myrtle and then West on the 210 Foothill Freeway.

After leaving the scene

of the accident on Huntington Drive Friday afternoon, police tracked down and arrested Emma Tapia-Gonzalez, 23, of Monrovia on suspicion of hit-and-run, She does not have a driver’s license. Tapia-Gonzalez was arrested her just before 8 p.m in Duarte.

TheMonrovia victim – Bernice De La Torre – was crossing south across Huntington Drive at Canyon Boulevard shortly before 4 p.m. Friday with a group of about four other elementary school-age siblings and friends when she was struck by a westbound Infinity. Tapia-Gonzales fled the scene. Immediately Bernice’s 14 year-old sister Erica, rushed to her aid and is now undergoing counseling for the trauma she witnessed and is aparently blaming herself for the accident, according to her 18-year-old sister Miriam dela Torre.

Miriam told Beacon Media that her sister Bernice is heavily sedated but is making some progress and seems to respond to some simple commands. She has had surgery on her left leg and in addition has had some brain

surgery as a result of the traffic collission. She is slated for another procedure Thursday. As of the present time there is no estimated release date from the hospital.

Miriam told The Weekly that a recent CatScan found nothing abnormal in her brain activity and Doctors are encouraged by her progress.

Tapia-Gonzalez faces up to four years in state prison on the hit-and-run charge alone, up to six months for driving without a license, and a fine of $1,000 for having no insurance.

The family wishes to thank everyone for the get well cards and well-wishes and asks the community to continue to pray for Bernice who has been upgraded from critical to stable condition.
