Pageantry, Protest and Perfect Pasadena Weather Dominate 2012 Rose Parade By Terry Miller

T

housands of people braved the 70-80 degree winter heat of Pasadena to see the TOR Parade on Januray 2 – one of the warmest Parade Days in recent memory. Those who camped out all night were in for mild weather thoroughout the night with a very quick warm up about half an hour into the parade. The weather added a sense of fun and festivity to flaots that particulary catered to water sports such as Natural Balance whose surfing bulldogs who seemed to have fun fun fun ‘til their handler took their surfboad away. The theme of the Parade this year was Just Imagine and the majority of the 44 floats in this year’s parade did the theme justice although one veteran parade-goer did point out that the theme did seem a little vague. With that in mind, there seemed like there was less animation and special effects this year than in years past. However, the crowd of untold thousands who lined the The South Pasadena float won the award for the most “outstanding display of fantasy and imagination”. -Photos by Terry Miller

Dorothy's Place Flying With Great Aim

By Dorothy Denne It was the year 1997. I was standing amidst the crowd awaiting the start of the Pasadena Rose Parade. All heads were turned upward as the Stealth Bomber flew over Colorado Boulevard. The ooos, aaahs and audible gasps provided a tranquility to the thunderpeal of the bomber's engines. Though designed for death and destruction, it was truly an awesome sight of grace and beauty. To stand directly under its path was an experience to defy description. A friend beside me said, "It looks just like a graceful bird soaring through the air." That remark broke my spell. It caused me to have

an instant, terrible vision. I said, "Thank God it's not a bird. It would do a giant poop on my car." You see, I am firmly convinced that every crow, bluejay, parrot and seagull living in or passing through Southern California has a definite goal to poop on my car. Many have already scored their objective. I suffer the agony of heat to avoid parking under a tree. They target me in flight. Not only does my car get splatted in wideopen spaces but it attracts birds with a special talent, birds that can poop vertically. They splat my side windows! How do they do that? Do they fly in reverse? Do they fly faster than the speed of their droppings? Still, why don't those droppings land on a horizontal surface? Furthermore, how do they manage to hit the top part of the window with the big splat so that the liquid part runs all down the

side to the point where the window rolls into the door. I guess I should be thankful the windows have never been down when these flying artists took aim. Not yet anyway. Even when they hit my windshield, it's never in an out-of-the-way place. Never along the side or down the middle. Always in front of the steering wheel directly in my line of vision. Ever try to drive without staring at a spot on the windshield? Especially a big, black, purple and white spot? That's another point of fascination. Do all birds eat purple berries or just the ones who poop on my car? One would think that with a varietal diet, it would be kind of psychedelic. Now that's an intriguing thought isn't it? At any rate, since that Stealth Bomber was supposedly designed to protect us, I hope its aim is as good as the birds of Southern California.

My New Year’s Eve started with those dreaded words, ”Mommm! I have a stomach ache.” Followed by that horrible retching sound. Yes, the flu had hit our house. For a teenager, nothing could be worse. Jack tried to convince us that he was well enough to go with us to our friend’s New Year’s Eve party. But he wasn’t. I felt bad for him, so I bought a bag of pretzels, something he could eat that wouldn’t upset his tummy. “Pretzels?” my husband questioned. “Why pretzels? Saltines are what he needs.” “But pretzels are his favorite.” I hate it when he questions my motherly wisdom. “They’re too hard to digest.” And with that Benjie took one and bit into it. “AAAHHH!” he shrieked in pain. “What happened?” “I throoke a tooth on that thretzel!” He showed me half a broken tooth and half a filling; Not in his mouth, but in the palm of his hand. “Mom! I think I’m going to be sick again.” Okay maybe pretzels weren’t the best idea. I ran upstairs to check

By Leslie Frieberger on Jack just as he was dashing for the bathroom. Our heads collided and I heard a crack like I had never heard before. Suddenly blood was everywhere, and it was coming from me. “Benjie! I think I broke my nose!” “Thwhat?” “Get some ice. Quick!” And so there we were. Jack sprawled out on the bathroom floor, Benjie holding his mouth, and now me lying down with a huge Barbie ice pack covering my face. “Well, it’s not broken,” “Doctor Benjie’ surmised. “But you do look like a prize fighter.” Great. It was New Year’s Eve and we still had a party to go to. We decided to split up so Jack wouldn’t be alone on this festive night. Sam, Lindsay and I took the first party shift and went around the corner to the neighbor’s house. Once there, I was having so much fun that by the time Benjie showed up to let me go home, I had decided that Jack was a big boy and could be home alone. “In a minute,” I pleaded like a little kid, before pop-

ping a stuffed jalapeno pepper in my mouth. “AAAAHHH!” It was like biting into Mt. Vesuvius. The lava-like cheese fused to my tongue and the roof of my mouth. I couldn’t pull it out. Tears rolled down my cheeks. Only fine Champaign could squelch it. By now it was 11:30. Lindsay went back home with her dad, leaving Sam and I at the party promising to get home by midnight. Not surprisingly it took longer than I had anticipated saying our good-byes and well wishes to all for the New Year. We had only 3 ½ minutes to make it home. I grabbed Sam’s hand and made a mad dash through the dark misty street. “Mama, I’m scared.” I squeezed his hand. “Don’t be scared I’m here. Besides you have your Nerf gun to protect you.” We threw our front door open as the ball dropped. We made it. We were together for the start of 2012. I kissed my husband with my swollen nose and burned lips, “Thappy thew thear, thunny!” “Thappy thew thear!”

In a time of political turmoil within his own country and strained relations with the Western world, Iranian director Asghar Farhadi has somehow managed to make a powerful and moving film about a woman’s desire to leave Iran that is being lauded not only by the international film community but by Iran’s own cultural powers that be. “A Separation” is a domestic drama about many things—marriage, social class, religion—but, instead of making a grand political statement (or try to, that is, as much as one could in a theoc-

racy) Farhadi has filtered big themes through an intense yet intimate portrayal of two Iranian, middle-class couples which, artistically speaking, is the most poignant statement about Iran to come out this century. Wife Simin (Leila Hatami) wants to divorce her husband Nader (Peyman Maadi) and take their 11-year old daughter Termeh (Sarina Farhadi) out of the country for reasons that are never clearly articulated but not difficult to guess. Denied her request by an unsympathetic judge, Simin leaves Nader anyway and begins what seems like

a futile custody battle for her daughter. Forced to care for his Alzheimer stricken father alone, Nader hires Razieh (Sareh Bayat), a workingclass wife and mother, to help him. Razieh, however, doesn’t tell her devout, ultraconservative husband Hodjat (Shahab Hosseini) about the job because he would not approve, and as she struggles with the immense difficulties of caring for Nader’s father while keeping the job a secret, things begin to unravel for both couples, culminating in a tragic accident that affects everyone.

While extinguishing the fire, PFD personnel discovered a deceased body in one of the apartments. The decedent was identified as Maria Donnelly, female-27 of Pasadena. dential burglary. Suspect Green is being held on $1,300,000 bail. The preliminary hearing date will be determined on February 16, 2012. Domestic violence continues to be a national problem. Restaurants were open to make sure the community of Monrovia had a festive New Years. Rudy Cancrellon, owner Rudy’s Restaurant provided the wine and beer garden in the middle of

Myrtle along with party favorites and New Years hats. This event was sponsored by The Old Town Merchants Association in conjunction with Kiwanis of Monrovia and other sponsors. As the ‘Lance & Gary Show’ played their music, people young and old danced the night away. An estimated 3,000 people

attended the event. Mayor Mary Ann Lutz was filled with jubilation and stated, “This was a success and we definitely want to have this next year.” While others celebrated the ball being dropped in Times Square, Monrovia elevated the glowing ball like a rising sun on a new year. Happy 2012.

Duarte City and Chamber Team with Best Jobs Magazine for “Get Back to Work Now” Job Fair and Workshop Jan. 11 The City of Duarte and Duarte Chamber of Commerce will once again partner with Best Jobs Magazine to host “Get Back to Work,” an event to help professionals connect with employers. Open to the general public and free of charge, the event will take place Wednesday, Jan. 11 from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the Duarte Community Center, 1600 Huntington Dr. This will be the fourth time in a year that the City and Chamber have joined forces with Best Jobs Magazine. More than 300 job seekers turned out for the last Get Back to Work event in Duarte in October. “These are excellent

networking events for job seekers offering face-toface time with prospective employers and fresh leads on actual job openings. By hosting these events, we hope to give our residents who want to be gainfully employed opportunities and resources to get back to work,” said Deputy City Manager, Karen Herrera. Unlike traditional job fairs, in addition to meeting with employers, job seekers will be able to network with employment resources such as Goodwill Industries and Workforce Investment Board, meet with job search assistants, apply for jobs by proxy, and attend a workshop from 1:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. to sharpen their job search-

ing skills and focus. The “By Proxy” application process showcases open positions for employers who do not typically attend job fairs or are unable to exhibit at the event, yet are hiring. A job seeker’s resume is forwarded directly to a hiring manager as opposed to a general mailbox. Best Jobs Magazine territory managers canvass the host city and surrounding areas each month to uncover available jobs. They confirm the validity of the positions, identify the hiring manager’s contact information, and then showcase the positions in the By Proxy section of the Get Back to Work Now event.

Supreme Court Rules on Challenges to the State’s Plan to Dissolve Redevelopment Agencies Court Decides the State Has the Authority to Dissolve Redevelopment Agencies but Does Not Have the Authority to Condition Their Continued Existence on Required Payments Resolving challenges filed by the California Redevelopment Association, the League of California Cities, and the cities of San Jose and Union City, the California Supreme Court today upheld the constitutionality of Assembly Bill 1X 26, which dissolves redevelopment agencies and redirects their

property tax revenues, and struck down Assembly Bill 1X 27, which would have allowed redevelopment agencies to continue to operate, but only if they opted in on a plan that required annual payments. On July 18, the California Redevelopment Association and the League

of California Cities filed a petition asking the court to overturn both Assembly Bill 1X 26 and Assembly Bill 1X 27. On August 11, the court agreed to hear the lawsuit and issued a partial stay of various provisions of both bills and to issue a decision before January 15, 2012. The court expedited briefing

and argument on the matter and held oral argument on November 10. In a majority opinion authored by Associate Justice Kathryn M. Werdegar, the court upheld the enactment of Assembly Bill 1X 26, dissolving redevelopment agencies and redirecting their property tax revenues.

The court explained that, because the Legislature had the authority to create redevelopment agencies, it also had the corollary power to dissolve them. The court noted that although Proposition 22, as enacted by the voters in 2010, amended the state Constitution to impose additional limits on the state’s fiscal powers, nothing in that initiative or other parts of the state Constitution guaranteed the continued existence of redevelopment agencies. The majority, however, held that Assembly Bill 1X 27 was unconstitutional because it conditioned the ability of redevelopment agencies to conduct new business on agreeing to an annual payment plan based on a portion of property tax revenues allocated to redevelopment agencies. The court explained that this opt-in plan violated Proposition 22 because that measure arose in opposition to similar past legislation and was intended to preclude further required payments based on redevelopment agency property tax revenues. The majority opinion by Justice Werdegar was signed by Associate Justices Joyce L. Kennard, Marvin R. Baxter, Ming W. Chin, Carol A. Corrigan, and Goodwin Liu. Chief Justice Tani Cantil-Sakauye joined the majority opinion upholding Assembly Bill 1X 26, but dissented with respect to the conclusion that Assembly Bill AB

1X 27 was unconstitutional. The Chief Justice observed that neither Proposition 22’s history nor its express language appeared to prohibit the opt-in payment plan created by Assembly Bill 1X 27. The dissenting opinion noted that it appeared the Legislature had carefully drafted Assembly Bill 1X 27 so as not to violate Proposition 22 by allowing the annual payment to come from any local revenue source and not specifically redevelopment agency funds, which Proposition 22 expressly protects. The Chief Justice concluded that Assembly Bill 1X 27 does not facially conflict with the state Constitution and further noted that the parties presented no evidence that the measure would actually violate the state constitution in practice. The court unanimously reformed Assembly Bill 1X 26, which had been largely stayed during the pendency of this action, by extending its various deadlines by four months. Governor Edmund G. Brown Jr. issued the following statement regarding today’s ruling by the California Supreme Court: “Today’s ruling by the California Supreme Court validates a key component of the state budget and guarantees more than a billion dollars of ongoing funding for schools and public safety.”

Pasadena Humane Society Rings in New Year Offering Free Spay/Neuter Surgeries for Chihuahuas In an effort to reduce pet overpopulation, the Pasadena Humane Society & SPCA will be offering free spay and neuter surgeries for Chihuahuas and Chihuahua mixes starting Jan. 1. Chihuahuas have become a prominent part of the general kennel population. The new program, which is part of the agency’s Spay and Neuter in Pasadena (SNiP) program, is developed to encourage owners to sterilize their Chihuahuas, and, in turn, reduce overpopulation. The free service applies to Chihuahuas and Chihuahua mixes up to 15 pounds for residents of the shelter’s service cities -- Pasadena, South Pasadena, San Marino, Sierra Madre, La Cañada Flintridge, Arcadia and Glendale. Owners can also request their dog to be microchipped at no additional charge. Since June 2010, PHS has developed strong partnerships with East Coast shelters to balance the

population by transporting more than 200 Chihuahuas to Richmond, Va. and Fort Lauderdale, Fla. “This has been an ongoing trend for quite some time now,” said Ricky Whitman, spokesperson for the Pasadena Humane Society. “We’re striving to help the animals and their owners through our public clinic. This is a wonderful resource we hope pet owners will use.” SNiP was developed

more than 10 years ago to offer low-cost services to residents in the agency’s seven service cities. The program also provides a public lowcost vaccine clinic for cats and dogs every year. Pets must be a minimum of two months old and weigh at least two pounds to have surgery. Appointments are required and can be made by calling the SNiP Coordinator at (626) 792-7151 extension 138.

“Our club is very proud to make this donation to Arcadia Methodist Hospital and happy for our role in helping those patients that will benefit from the hospital’s expansion,” said McCallum. “This is but one example of the many significant contributions the Arcadia Rotary Club has made in its 85 years of existence to the City of Arcadia.”

Continued from page 1 streets seemed to enjoy every minute. There was a heavy police presence, and in fact one float, US Bank, was escoreted by approximate 10 Pasadena Police officers as it made its way down Colorado. The extra security presumably was because of the Occupy movement. However there no incidents during the parade but their were 10 pre-parade arrests according to the Pasadena Police Dept. After the parade, Occupy the Rose Parade saw about 4,000 plus people march behind the end of the parade carrying a massive Constitution replica and countless signs voicing opin-

ions about banks and mortgage holders. The protestors also formed a giant Octopus and continued their protest to City Hall where a Rally was held. The list of the winners follows: Sweepstakes Trophy for most beautiful entry: Dole, "Preserving Paradise" Animation Trophy for best display of animation: Farmers Insurance Group, "The Unimaginable" Craftsman Trophy for outstanding showmanship and dramatic impact more than 55 feet in length:

Santa Anita Park, which opened its winter/spring meeting with an on-track crowd of 44,579 on Dec. 26, posted significant across the board gains through the first six days of its 79-day meet according to racetrack officials. Through six days, on-track attendance is up 21 percent, while on-track handle is up 11 percent. “Our opening day crowd was the biggest it’s been since 1994 and our parimutuel figures have been up on-track and across the country,” said Santa Anita President George Haines. “We’re obviously very pleased to be off to such a strong start and we want to sincerely thank our fans and horsemen for making this possible. It’s great to be able to renew acquaintances with so many of them and we’ve also seen a lot of new people here in the first week as well. We can’t thank them enough and we want all of them to know that customer service continues to be a huge priority for us here at Santa Anita. “We’ve been lucky with the weather and our field size has been good. per race and there’s no question that has provided better gambling opportunities for our players.” In addition to large ontrack gains, Santa Anita’s out-of-state handle skyrocketed, showing an 18 percent increase over a year ago. Southern California Off Track Wagering Inc. (SCOTWinc) handle showed a 10 percent increase and all sources Santa Anita handle was up 14 percent through week-one. “By any accounting, these are substantial increases,” said Haines. “Our long range weather forecast is good and we’ve got good momentum. We have a number of promotions slated

for the month of January and we’ve got a solid stakes schedule ahead as well. We hope to sustain this momentum and we’ll continue to market and promote very aggressively.” Santa Anita begins a four-day race week on Thursday with first post time at 12:30 p.m. The Grade III, $100,000 Sham Stakes for 3-year-olds and the Grade III, $150,000 San Pasqual Stakes for older horses will highlight Saturday’s card. The man arrested and detained in Canada, Bob Matheson, was not allowed to leave the country before his sentencing which was on December 13. According to Canada officials, there is no evidence that Matheson left the country between the time he was arrested and the time he was convicted.

Early Mission-Era Water Maps Will be Unveiled Jan. 7 Imagine living in the old days of dirt roads and having to walk to a river, get your own water in hand-made baskets, then trek back to drink, cook and use the water for painting, cleaning and other uses. So, where was the nearest river or stream? On Saturday, Jan. 7, at 11 a.m. at San Gabriel Mission Museum as the focus of San Gabriel Mission History Day No. 81, historian and watermaster Mike Hart will unveil maps of the early San Gabriel Mission-era water systems in the western San Gabriel Valley. Hart says they appear to be the first of their kind available to the public for display. Hart’s research spanned 17 years to develop these water maps of San Gabriel Mission, El Molino Viejo (known as the Old Mill) and La Presa Mill, and a few other works that some people have called unmatched while visiting his current exhibit at Huntington Library and Botanical Gardens in San Marino, according to a mission spokesperson. “It’s been interesting and exciting as these maps and drawings and paintings have come together,” said Hart, who is retired after working nearly 40 years as

vice president and general manager of Sunny Slope Water Company in Pasadena. Visiting a local historic landmark may not sound exciting to a few people, until they visit a site like San Gabriel Mission where you can imagine seeing the Gabrieleno-Tongva Indians and other people in the early mission era simply going about their daily tasks of making adobe bricks for buildings, planting food crops, and creating clay pots that were used in kitchens to help cook food needed to survive, said Al Sanchez, mission business manager. “They first had to have water to survive and to use during their day.” Orders for prints of all eight artworks is available at www.michaeljhart.com. Hart said he will have all eight artworks available for viewing on Jan. 7, and can take orders. He and his family have donated three special museum-quality framed artworks to San Gabriel Mission for permanent display after the unveiling on Jan. 7. This event is planned as an opportunity for the public to interact with Hart in an informal setting so that everyone can share information and learn more about history, said a mission spokesperson.

And, visitors also can see the mission church, museum, grounds, Indian house, and mission building models of all 21 missions in California on a self-guided tour. Mission History Day was started on June 4, 2005 so that, once a month on a Saturday, visitors can learn more about mission history: people, cultures, events, buildings, artwork, artifacts, plant life and more. Some months a contest is scheduled. Contests have been mission model buildings, art, photography, and history challenges. Persons age 17 and younger must be with a parent or guardian age 18 or older. Admission fee is $3 for age six to 17, $5 for age 18-61, $4 for seniors age 62 and older, and age five and younger is free. Free self-parking is available on a first-come basis in the church lot at the intersection of Mission Road and Junipero Serra Drive or on nearby streets. The address is 427 S. Junipero Serra Dr., San Gabriel, CA 91776, and the telephone number is 626457-3048. San Gabriel Mission was founded on Sept. 8, 1771 and is the fourth oldest of 21 missions in California.

The victim held a party at her house on December 23rd, after which she noticed her phone missing from her purse and wallet missing from her car. The victim discovered numerous unauthorized charges on her credit cards, and was informed by a friend that an unknown guest was seen inside her car at the time of the party. She is desirous of prosecution. At approximately 7:04 p.m., an officer responded to the intersection of Las Tunas Drive and El Monte Avenue, in reference to a two-party traffic collision. JANUARY 5, 2012 - JANUARY 11, 2012 19

Approximately 4000 Protesters Occupy the Rose Parade 10 Arrests in Pasadena Precede Parade By Terry Miller While the pre parade could be described as a family gathering along the parade route, it was mostly peaceful and quite with the exception of the a few arrests made between January 1 at 5:00 p.m. and January 2 at 5:00 a.m. There were a total of 10 arrests, 6 misdemeanors (4

drunk in public) and 4 felonies throughout the evening and early morning. This represented a decrease in the number of arrests compared to previous years, according to the Pasadena Police Dept. One of those incarcerated was Michael Buell, 45, of Fallbrook, who was arrested by the Pasadena Police De-

partment Sunday and initially charged with felony possession of a weapon. Those charges were later reduced to a misdemeanor. Buell had planned on attending the Occupy the Rose Parade. He was released Wednesday. Pasadena police detained Buell after he allegedly jaywalked across the

three-way intersection of Thurgood Marshall Street and North Euclid Avenue on Sunday night and apprently did not cooperate with the arresting officer’s request. As the parade ended, so did the coverage by many television stations which quickly diverted their cameras away from the nearly 4000 protesters who peacefully followed the annual New Year’s Day Parade along with the religious protesters which traditionally follow the police cars post parade? Carrying a massive replica of the Constitution, fellow marchers met with small amount of disdain from conservative parade goers on Orange Grove but the majority of people were respectful of the group’s right to freedom of speech as they marched to city hall. The group, which consisted of individuals of all ages and walks of life, held signs aloft ranging from the serious, to the sublime and some just plain comical. One sign read “Tea Party Poopers International” another …”Keep Your Hands off MY Parade.” People were dressed in typical ‘Occupy’ attire, some

wearing masks and some beating drums to the beat of the Wall Street ‘fat cats’ depicted by cigar smoking menin suits with wads of cash spewing from every pocket. There was a moment when the Occupy Protest looked more like the Doo Dah Parade with a dash of Burning Man thrown in for good measure. The peaceful, party atmosphere of the Rose Parade’s nemesis, the famous and upcoming Doo Dah Parade was once again reborn. Costumes, music balloons, and a human octopus were met with a considerable show of force from the local police agencies, especially the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Dept which staged over 40 officers in full riot gear at the corner of Orange Grove and Colorado to accompany the protesters .At times, the peaceful protest seemed surreal with so many law enforcement officers with hundreds of plastic handcuffs at the ready. Luckly we saw no trouble as the sea of Occupy the Rose participants marched to City Hall for the Rally. Organizer Pete Thottam estimated the crowd of protesters at 5,000 but other

local estimates lowered that figure. "Banks got bailed out, we got sold out" was heard as the Occupy the Rose Parade demonstrators retraced about 1.5 miles of the 5.5mile parade route before veering off for the rally near City Hall. Carrying a 250-foot long banner that said "We the People" indeed sent a loud messgage along with a 70-foot octopus made from recycled plastic bags that represented the tentacles of perceived corporate greed. All this and a man on a bicycle wearing a TV on his head. The organizers were really pleased with the turnout and Pete Thottam told the throngs of protesters “This isn’t the end…this is just the beginning...” as he thanked everyone for keeping the protest, peaceful safe and so succesful. While many said the Occupy movement had no business being involved with the family Rose Parade, it is important to point out that some corporate floats included insurance companies which were bailed out by the federal government.

High Five - A Los Angeles Sheriff’s Deputy Winningham gets a high-five from a young admirer at the end of the parade. Occupy the Rose Parade led a successful protest against the corporate America and it’s banking sustem with 4000 strong voicing their opinions along part of the Parade route on Monday. The movement ended up with a rally at City Hall. -Photos by Terry Miller
