By Dorothy Denne December is here so Ho, Ho, Ho. 'Tis the season to be jolly. Anytime is a good time to be jolly but I'm talking round jolly. You know, like Santa round and jolly as in "round little belly that shook when he laughed like a bowl full of jelly." 'Tis the season for will power. I have lots of it. I'm constantly saying, "Yes, thank you, I will" to a bite of this, a bite of that, or perhaps a sliver, a slice, a slab. Oh my. It's all so good. My birthday was three days before Thanksgiving. Some of my friends took me out for dinner and I was pretty righteous. I knew the holidays were upon us.
Besides, they only give you one serving in a restaurant and generally the fancier the restaurant, the smaller the serving. We went to a fancy restaurant. Then came Thanksgiving. I went to my heartson's new home for dinner. Generally, the more love the more food. I love my heart-family a lot. But, I had determination of steel. I was determined to take just a very small serving of each thing. I did. Then, I determined I liked everything so much that I might have a little more of everything. I did. Not necessarily a little, but definitely everything. Oh my. It was all so good. Here we are in December. It is the one month more than any other that we tend to eat our way through, from day one right through day thirty-one. Oh sure there are days here and there where we promise outselves we won't eat a thing so our new outfit will fit well on New Years Eve.
Aren't those the days we always run into someone who offers us a homemade Christmas cookie or some fudge or an egg nog? That's why we only promise ourselves. No one else needs to know we are breaking a promise and oh my, they are all so good. Modern times have brought us many good things. The return of stylish flat-heeled shoes is one. Tossing out the requirements for corsets and girdles is another. And, of course, we have elasticized waistbands. Oh my. They are good. So dear readers, if you are fortunate to have a reason for good laughs and an excuse for good food, I say go for it. Personally I'm determined to laugh at everything I can, eat anything I want, wear elastic waistbands and just shake like a bowl full of jelly. Who do you know that was ever more loved than Santa? Oh my. It is good.

Film Review By Michael James Gonzalez Like a three-minute pop song, the new film “Like Crazy” is sweet, entertaining, and conveys simple truths about love that are always fun to be reminded of. But the cool, hip, verse-chorus-verse style of the film starts to feel repetitive too soon before its ambiguous ending, which after only 88 minutes provides little satisfaction. What makes the movie watchable are mainly the performances by Anton Yelchin and Felicity Jones, who play transatlantic, star-crossed lovers seemingly destined to be separated forever. When Anna (Jones), a British gal attending college in Santa Monica, decides to violate her temporary student visa to spend one last summer
with her college lover Jacob (Yelchin), the two sacrifice more than they can imagine, as, first, immigration problems, and then jobs, distance, other lovers, and time conspire against their reunion. The film is endearing in its sincere attempt to capture the essence of a long-distance relationship; however, the script lacked much development, as the characters, who portend to be hopelessly in love, couldn’t be more wishy-washy in their decision to be together. The reasons for why they would fall in love in the first place are also vague at best, with director Drake Doremus opting to clip abrupt scenes of quick dialogue together with montage shots of the characters
doing cheesy romantic activities shortly before they profess their undying love (or perhaps infatuation?) for each other. What would have been much more interesting to watch, instead of the cat and mouse game these trapped adolescents play, are the much too short lived relationships that both characters become involved in, which usually turn into the biggest obstacle to a long distance relationship, especially when one of those relationships includes the beautiful young actress Jennifer Lawrence, who just happened to be nominated for an Oscar this past February and yet was sorely underused in this film.

Metro Orange Line Marks 6th Anniversary
As the popular Metro Orange Line celebrates its sixth anniversary, work continues on extending the busway to Chatsworth. Tree silhouettes, barren of leaves for the winter…snow softly floating…a pretty little bridge arching over a stream—what more tranquil setting can we imagine? But wait! That man on the bridge, pacing agitatedly to and fro, finally deciding to take the plunge over the railing…that’s anything but tranquil! To the rescue comes an angel. Yet what an unlikely angel he is—wizened, gray-haired under his slouched hat, a rumpled trench coat keeping him warm. No wings, no halo. Yes, that’s Clarence. Clarence of the beloved holiday classic, “It’s a Wonderful Life.” Clarence has no wings because he hasn’t earned them yet. A 2nd Class Angel, he’s been assigned to be George Bailey’s guardian angel and help him realize life is truly wonderful. It’s a daunting task. George is in despair, facing ruin after yet another financial disaster. He’s convinced his family and friends in his small home town would be better off without him, and he is on the brink of making that happen when Clarence appears. Who among us does not know the story? How many televisions are tuned to Frank Kapra’s 1946 movie starring Jimmy Stewart during every holiday season? It’s a warm, fuzzy, sentimental tale, a simplistic one. Of course it is—you expected otherwise? It extols the virtues of putting others before oneself, of

working hard and being honest, of caring for one’s community, confident that the community will return the favor. But life doesn’t always work that way. George’s dreams to escape Bedford Falls, see the world, and do “big things” never come true. Clarence takes George back to key moments in his life, times when he gave up something precious to him for the benefit of someone else. He used their honeymoon money used to forestall a run on the bank. He stayed home to tend his dying father’s savings and loan business, relinquishing his college education to his brother. Then when George declares he wishes he’d never been born, Clarence revisits those earlier moments and graphically shows George the dire outcomes that would have transpired if he hadn’t been born. The flashbacks are accomplished with many small vignettes onstage. The scene changes are mildly distracting, but lacking a revolving stage (and the Playhouse certainly doesn’t have one!) the movements are quickly accomplished. Folding screens also facilitate setting changes. Even a prefab “house” is rolled on to enhance some of George’s strolls down memory lane. Karl Maschek plays the lovable angel, Clarence. Scott Harris brings exuberant energy as George, both in his conquer-theworld moments and when he’s facing life’s grim realities. He and his young
sweetheart Mary Hatch (Nancy Young) have playful moments singing “Buffalo Gal” rather off-key, just as real people do. Alison Janes as the seductive Violet Peterson makes her play for George. Grumpy, conniving old Henry Potter, the greedy tycoon who is out to get George’s family business, is brought to life by Jack Kandel. He’s wheeled about in an intriguingly vintage wheelchair by his goon (Matthew Herrmann.) Uncle Billy (Chuck Lacey) and Mr. Gower (Mark Mandell) play pivotal roles. Despite a large cast, some of the actors play multiple roles. In particular, Clay Bunker is George’s brother Harry, his friend Sam Wainwright, and Mr. Welch. Matthew Bond is both Peter Bailey and young George. Gerry Orz plays the newspaper boy and Tommy Bailey. Others in two roles are Sheila Kraics, Sarah Logan, and Matthew Herrmann. Rounding out the talented cast are Jennie Floyd, Janie Steele, Paul Bond, Chuck Lacey, Chuck Hernandez, Elaine Kratofil, Elizabeth Gray, Charlotte Hardy, Jessie Ellico Franks, Meg Momsen, and Sophia Davis. The play is James W. Rodgers’ adaptation of a story by Phillip Van Doren Stern. Director Christina Harris designed the sound, with stage manager Michael Dessin operating it. Ward Calaway is the SMP producer. Don Bergmann designed the set, and constructed it with assistance
from Calaway and Jennifer Scott. Credit Lois Tedrow for the ‘40s costume design. Assistant director Kristen Cox designed the lighting, which is operated by Maureen Davis. Anne Marie Atwan and Linda De Metrick handle the props. Christine Soldate and Calaway did the program design and layout. Kate Vandevender designed the poster art and Philip Sokoloff is publicist. “It’s a Wonderful Life” will continue at the Sierra Madre Playhouse Fridays and Saturdays through Dec. 23. Extra weeknight holiday performances are Wed. and Thurs., Dec. 21 & 22. Evening curtain times are 8 p.m. Three Sunday matinees on Dec. 4, 11, & 18 are at 2:30 p.m. Admission is $25adults, $22 for seniors (65+) and students (13-17), and $15 for children 12 and under. The Sierra Madre Playhouse invites theatergoers to join the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve in their annual “Toys for Tots” program. Unwrapped toy gifts may be placed in large decorated boxes in the Playhouse lobby. The Sierra Madre Playhouse is located at 87 W. Sierra Madre Blvd., Sierra Madre. brought efficiency to keep pace with changes in the HIV/AIDS epidemic during very tough economic times. He has led efforts to ensure that California receives its fair share of federal HIV funding. The City of Pasadena is hosting a World AIDS Day ceremony in recognition of the 30th anniversary of the first reports of AIDS in the U.S., as well as recognizing 20 years of the department’s Andrew Escajeda Clinic. Record Numbers Attend Alverno High School’s Open House Nov. 21 The rain did not stop more than 300 guests from attending Alverno High School’s annual Open House on Sunday, November 20th. Families with girls in 6th-8th grade were treated to a day of information about the high school and were able to visit all the departments on campus. Guests were welcomed on to Alverno’s beautiful 13-acre campus and treated to a welcome assembly and prayer. They were invited into the library to get the essential forms and
information they would need to help their daughter apply to Alverno. Campus tours were offered by current student ambassadors who were informative and friendly. In addition to classroom visits, academic presentations were offered in a variety of subjects including Visual and Performing Arts, English, Mathematics, Science, Choir, Campus Ministry and Christian Service. “It may have been a cold and rainy day outside, but inside the Theology classroom there was
much warmth and enthusiasm as students and parents learned about the Catholic Identity of Alverno High School as integral to the curriculum,” said Ms. Eileen Garabedian, Department Chair for Theology. Visitors were also invited to a special presentation about the sports program and different clubs available as well as a presentation on the unique student government program at Alverno. At the end of the day, guests were treated to refreshments and

Handel’s Messiah is one of the greatest musical pieces ever written and has been performed hundreds and hundreds of times for almost 300 years in churches and concert halls around the globe. Messiah was intended as a thought provoking
work for Easter and Lent, but has become a Christmas tradition. Messiah consists of three sections, the first of which focuses with the Advent and Christmas stories that pave the way for the coming of Jesus Christ. The Hallelujah Chorus concludes part 2 which describes the passion, death and resurrection of Jesus. The concert will be led by Music Director, Peter Green. Dr. Green serves as the Chair of the Visual & Performing Arts Division at Glendale College, and has recently released his first classical chamber music CD. The concert will include several accomplished soloists including Johanna Kent, Jan Freemyer, Linda Sharpe and Jennifer Miller, as well as chamber orchestra, and the choir (with over 60 singers!). PCC Women’s Cross Country 10th Place Overall in State Championship

With its most successful women's cross country season since 1996, Pasadena City College showed its worth at the CCCAA State Championships Saturday at Fresno's Woodward Park. The Lancers' 10th place team finish was highlighted by five PCC runners racing among the top 101. It was the highest team finish for the Lancers since they placed fourth overall at the 1996 state meet. Elizabeth Lyons closed out her two-year PCC racing career by taking 53rd
place with a time of 19 minutes, 47.3 seconds. Freshman Diane Lombardi was not far behind in 56th place at 19:50.1. In 79th was frosh runner Zahina Rios, who hit the finish at 20:07.84. Sophomore Rebecca Nunez covered the 3.1 mile course in the 92nd spot at 20:19.32. Arielle Barragan, a freshman, may have ran the most important race team-wise as she placed 101st (20:34.83). Often a team's fifth runner can determine a large swing in team placing, especially when the runner
is far behind the team's top four. In this case, Barragan's finish scored 82nd individually (19 non-scoring runners who were ahead of her were from teams that reached their 5-runner maximum or were runners who qualifed from colleges only as individuals). Cassandra Lew, a sophomore, trotted in 130th spot (21:02.17) and freshman Tessa Chandler rounded out PCC's team finishers in 165th (21:48.48). Glendale College won the state title behind race champion Karen Rosas with a blistering time of 17:59.61. Among South Coast Conference teams, only Mt. San Antonio (third) and LA Trade Tech (seventh) placed ahead of Pasadena. "We had a goal to finish in the top 10 and we accomplished it," said PCC Head Coach Armand Crespo. "We ran well enough at the conference meet, then slipped a bit at the SoCals. We urged our second tier runners to go after it, and we were able to get big efforts from Arielle, Zahina, and Rebecca. Diane ran her best race since early in the year. Elizabeth was consistent once again, leading us in all the big races since mid-season." The Lancers placed third at the SCC Championships and 13th at the Southern California meet.

California Firm Recalls Chicken Sausages Due to Misbranding and an Undeclared Allergen Papa Cantella’s Inc., a Vernon, Calif. establishment, is recalling approximately 456 pounds of chicken sausages because of misbranding and an undeclared allergen, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced today. The product being recalled contains walnuts, a known allergen, which is not noted on the label. The products subject to recall includes: 16-oz. packages of “CANTELLA’S FULLY COOKED CHICKEN SAUSAGE WITH APPLES,” bearing the identifying lot numbers of “10191100” or “10191100R” and sell/freeze by dates of “12/03/2011” or “12/06/2011.” Each package bears the establishment number “P-6016” inside the USDA
mark of inspection. The product subject to recall was produced on Oct. 19, 2011, and distributed to retail establishments in the Southern California area. When available, the retail distribution list(s) will be posted on FSIS’ website at www.fsis.usda.gov/ FSIS_Recalls/Open_Federal_Cases/index.asp. The problem was discovered through a consumer complaint brought to the attention of the company. The company believes incorrect labels were applied as a result of a production scheduling error. FSIS and the company have received no reports of adverse reactions due to consumption of these products. Anyone concerned about a reaction should contact a healthcare provider. FSIS routinely conducts recall effectiveness checks to
verify recalling firms notify their customers of the recall and that steps are taken to make certain that the product is no longer available to consumers. Temple City Resident Donna Georgino Retires from Duarte Parks and Recreation It will be a bittersweet farewell this week for longtime Duarte Parks & Recreation Department Director Donna Georgino. Georgino, a Temple City resident, will retire Dec. 8 after 30 years working for the city of Duarte. She’s been the director of Parks & Rec. since 1987. That’s long enough to have written applications for and won about $900,000 in grants to build the city’s new teen center, and other city projects, and long enough to have compiled a desk-full of photos of young people whose lives have been impacted and who’ve deeply affected Georgino. “I have so many good memories. One of the best, definitely, is the people I’ve gotten to work with, fellow workers, people in the community, and, of course, the kids I’ve worked with,” she said, as she gazed down at a montage of colorful photos encased in glass on her desktop, a location where many other employees might have a large desk calendar of schedules and events. “This is Aidin Esparza,
she’s a special education teacher in San Diego now; and, here’s Freddy Garcia, he had a lot of problems in high school, but he got through it and he’s such a sweet guy,” Georgino said, as she pointed out picture after picture, and smiled with recollection. “This is Arturo Dewberry, he just graduated. We call him Smiley,” she said, pointing to another youth’s photo. “And here’s Manny Soto, he joined the military right before we went to war. He went to Afghanistan. But, now he’s home and married to Brenda. They have two kids,” she said. Working with young people has been Georgino’s life outside her job, as well as in it. She’s a single mom, with a son, Christopher, 18, a freshman at the University of Laverne. Although her son graduated from Temple City High School last year, Georgino continues to volunteer at TCHS with Grad Night and Ramrodders, the school’s football team booster club. She’s also is a member of the Monrovia Guild

City Hall Tree-Lighting Ceremony and Holiday Celebration Pasadena Mayor Bill Bogaard will lead the city’s official Christmas tree-lighting ceremony and holiday celebration Thursday, Dec. 8, from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. in the grand entrance at Pasadena City Hall, 100 N. Garfield Ave. Wearing Santa hats, a children’s chorus from the citywide after-school recreation program will perform music of the season. Refreshments will be served. Bogaard will flip the
switch that turns on the lights of the 20-foot Washington Noble Fir tree. The colorful lights, donated by Pasadena Water and Power, are energy-saving, lightemitting diodes (LED) that use about 90 percent less energy than incandescent tree lights and produce almost no heat. The tree will also be decorated with large, colorful ornaments. Everyone is encouraged to bring new, unwrapped toys, sporting
equipment or gift cards to place in the Spark of Love Toy Drive box. At the end of the ceremony, guests and firefighters will load the gifts into a waiting Pasadena Fire Department ambulance, which will transport the gifts so they can be wrapped and then opened on Christmas morning by needy children and teens. American Legion Boutique this Saturday Continued from page 1 Live Oak in Arcadia. One of the artists who donated items for the Boutique this year is Pasadenan Ruby Naylor. To say Ruby Naylor is no ordinary senior citizen is a substantial understatement. Whenever this Pasadena woman puts her brain and willpower to a project, she gets more than 100% involved…she really puts her heart and soul into the venture. And it’s all volunteer engergy, spirit and love. A couple of years ago Naylor quipped that she might perhaps be “a little past her years for active service” in her 80’s – therefore she decided she had to do something to keep servicemen and women warm a couple of cold winters ago. She did exactly that by spending one solid year quilting a hundred plus blankets and donating them to Veterans Administration hospitals. It was her way of serving her county – “If we can’t help someone else, then what good are we?” Naylor said when Beacon Media first featured a story on her outpouring of love. The impact that Rub Naylor had on the men and women returning from Iraq and Afghanistan is still being felt at Long Beach Veteran’s Hospital where the quilts were donated. She has receieved numerous letters of thanks in recognoition not only for her donation but for her volunteerism and spirit. This year is no exception. Naylor decided to make some unique Christmas gifts with her boundless enegy and talent. The
gifts, all of which Naylor donated, will go on sale Saturday at American Legion Hall 615 E Live Oak at the annual Boutique and Bake sale. The proceeds will help the American Legion with its many activities for Veterans. The holiday gifts Naylor has created range from napkin holders, blankets, throws and refrigerator magnets with a special message to other unique items you won’t find in any store. Other Christmas items will also include hand made tree ornaments Naylor created. Naylor is quick to point out that it is not just her work that creates the Boutique and Bake Sale. It’s a combination of dedicated volunteers who donate their time and talent not just making and donating but the preparation, “There are a lot of people behid the scenes” said Naylor who devote their time and eneggy to this project each year. The American Legion was chartered and incorporated by Congress in 1919 as a patriotic veterans organization devoted to mutual helpfulness. While others were being jostled in malls or pepper sprayed in megamarts, local residents were strolling up and down Myrtle Avenue enjoying beautiful weather, great bargains and a visit from Santa Claus. They were days of stress free shopping, and for some lucky shoppers, a chance to win a prize from the secret shopper. On Saturday there were even carolers strolling
the Avenue. It was relaxing. The weather was great. The salespeople in the shops were helpful. It was heaven for holiday shoppers. On December 11 the ‘Leven Oaks will celebrate the 100th anniversary of its Grand Opening in 1911. The city of Monrovia was barely 25 years old then, having been founded in 1886. William Howard Taft, that giant of a man, was in the White House and George V was on the throne of England. The
first World War was not even a bad dream and Monrovia was a sleepy little town gaining a reputation for good agriculture and a fine climate. It was a resort destination and that was what prompted the building of a new hotel in town, the ‘Leven Oaks, named not just for the year of its opening, but also the

Monrovia Wildcats played a victorious game on Friday night 67-21 at Whittier College. Looks like Monrovia might be the favorite in the CIF Southern Section Mid-Valley Division Playoffs. Heyworth, after Monrovia held Whittier Christian to three plays on the Heralds’ first possession. Monrovia Wildcat scoring frenzy started with a 56 yard bomb to George Frazier V aka G5 for a 7-0 lead with the first quarter less than two minutes hold. De’Shawn Ramirez #3 rushed for 129 yards and scored 4 touchdowns which included 108 yards interception return from the end zone for a touchdown. Blake Hayworth #12, quarterback threw for 185 yards
and three scores. Whittier Christian received 124 yards and a touchdown in a cleanup duty from Joel Rhone, finished 7-5. The Heralds had a hard time containing Monrovia defensive tackle Ellis McCarthy #18 and Kevin Spencer, finished with 122 yards rushing but were held to minus-23 yards in the first half, with quarterback Daniel Chacon being sacked six times. Marquis Bias finished with 59 yards and one touchdown. Heyworth threw a 63 yard pass to Junior Quarterback, Mason Grant before he scored on a 1 yard run for a 41-7 lead at halftime. Third quarter Monrovia - 16 yard pass completed to #10 Brett Walsh for a touch down. With only six min-
utes to go in the third quarter, De’Shawn Ramirez #3 rushed for 69 yard touchdown 54-6. End of the third quarter, Whittier Christian, Grant Escobar completed a 16 yard pass for a touchdown. Final score in the third quarter 12-61. Fourth quarter Jacob Bueno #4, the younger brother of Nick Bueno rushed for the final touchdown of 34 yards to seal the victory score 67-21. The Wildcats outclassed the Heralds for the third consecutive time in the playoffs, including last season’s championship game, to 9-3. Monrovia will prepare for their bout against the Covina Colts, who are the No. #1 seed in the semi-finals on December 2, 2011 at the Covina District Field.
Woman’s body found in El Monte by Dena Burroughs The body of a female Hispanic adult was found at the Rio Hondo Wash, near the intersection of Santa Anita Avenue, the morning of Sunday, November 27. Sheriff’s Homicide Bureau detectives said she had been shot and pronounced her dead at
the scene. Coroner’s officials later identified her as Marlene Estrada, aged 31, of La Puente. As of last Wednesday there was no further information about this shooting. The Sheriff’s department is encouraging anyone with knowledge about this case

Fiat Dealership Set to Open in Duarte A new Fiat dealership is set to open in Duarte as soon as the end of December. This, after Duarte’s City Council Tuesday night approved some pretty hefty incentives to entice Chrysler to bring its “Fiat salon” to the area. The Fiat salon — a small dealership, similar to one recently opened in the city of Downey — will lease the former Mitsubishi dealership, next to Car Max. The Mitsubishi dealership has been vacant since 2008, which is one reason city staff felt comfortable with an anticipated 50-percent sales tax rebate for Chrysler in the coming 12 years of the agreement, which is expected to be about $1.25 million, according to Craig Hensley, Duarte’s community development director. “If Fiat’s not here, we’re going to have a vacant lot for quite a while,” Hensley said. Despite an attempt by Councilman Phil Reyes to
unsweeten the deal, and offer less monetary incentive, the Council voted 4- to- 1 to move forward with the incentives. Chrysler anticipates the Fiat dealership will have about $11 million in sales in its first year in Duarte and an average of about $18 million in subsequent years. According to the deal made with the city, the dealership also will put the name Duarte in its name and signage, and Chrysler will provide $750,000 n capital improvements to the site within the first 18 months. Due to state regulations, there is a minimum number of miles in which other Fiat dealerships can be located, so the Downey and downtown Los Angeles Fiat salons will be the closest until a new location in Glendale also is added, according to Cheryl L. Ansel, head of Chrysler Realty Group, who flew in from Michigan to be at Tuesday’s Council meet-
ing.
There are 2,300 Chrysler dealerships across the country, and only will be an expected 150 Fiat dealerships, Ansel said. In the deal with Duarte, Chrysler agreed to pay the city $100,000 in liquidated damages if the company defaults on the agreement. That should guarantee the facility will remain operational over time, said Duarte City Manager Darrell George. The new dealership will be at 1125 Central Ave. That property is owned by Goodview America, according to Hensley. Community member Steve Hernandez, who attended the Council meeting, said he was thrilled to hear Fiat is coming to Duarte. “To find Chrysler interested in investing in our tiny, little city, I think it’s tremendous,” Hernandez said. “I’m thankful to them for choosing us in difficult times.”

It Takes a Village, Seriously, to Make Dickens Village By Bill Coburn For many years, the holiday celebration put on by the Sierra Madre Chamber of Commerce was called the Holiday Open House. A few years back, the Chamber decided to go with "Dickens Village," and added the horse and buggy ride, period costume dressed carolers, etc. Truth be told, though, there's a lot more of OUR village involved in this celebration than there is Dickens. Every year for the last several years, Rotary Club has taken on the task of decorating the street lamps with pine garland and ribbons, giving the downtown an instant holiday look. This is done the weekend before Thanksgiving. On that same weekend, members of the Sierra Madre City College, recruited and coordinated by Billy Sullivan, Jr. of The Bottle Shop, construct the stable in Kersting Court, a stable that the City College donated in 1997. Not long after the stable is put up, Osti Tree Service drops off palm fronds to be used to cover the shingles on the roof, giving it a more authentic look. The creche figures are stored free of charge all year long in the basement at Bank of the West, until it's time for the Chamber to bring them out and place them in the stable. This year, the figures underwent a major restoration by Friends of the Arts, a group of local artists, so they were brought up from the local residence where the work took place, instead. Arnold's Frontier Hardware and Gifts donated pallets on which to place the figures, which hopefully will reduce the risk of the water damage that made this year's restoration a necessity. Santa Anita Park donated hay to cover the pallets and dress up the stable. Speaking of Bank of the West, for several years now they have allowed the Chamber to commandeer their driveway on the Saturday after Thanksgiving to become a snow sled run, which is enjoyed by hundreds of kids (and adults, too). This year, for the first time, the parking lot behind Bank of the West was also transformed into a winter wonderland with a choo choo train ride. To make the ride area a little more holiday like, Bean Town donated several large blowup Christmas ornaments and decorated the area with lots of Christmas lights. Renaissance Plaza management opened up the plaza
for "Art Alley," where local artists had an opportunity to display and sell their art. Leonora Moss provided the ribbon for and created the bows that adorned the tree. Public Works assisted with putting up the tree, in between hanging the holiday banners from the light posts all over the downtown area. Valero and Bank of the West both donated space on their property to be used to provide portable restrooms for the influx of

Public Works processes an encroachment permit application to allow local businesses to conduct sidewalk sales, if they would
assist Santa with the children, handing out candy canes and helping children on and off Santa's lap. This duty is performed by a rotating group of new Princesses of SMRFA year after year, the one constant being that it is done under the direction of Princess coordinator Donna Sutcliffe. In addition to the hours she spends keeping a watchful eye on the Princesses as they help Santa, each year Donna presses the white aprons the Princesses wear, then after the event she washes, dries and returns them to the Chamber for storage until next year. Sierra Madre Kiwanis donated money to purchase mini-living trees, which were decorated by students at six local schools - Bethany, Gooden, Mama Pete's, SM Community Nursery School, SM Elementary School and St. Rita. These trees were auctioned off in a silent auction, with the money raised helping to cover the expense of bringing in the snow. Other sponsors included the Arcadia Association of Realtors, which helped pay for the choo choo train ride and Athens Services, which, as an Annual Silver Sponsor of the
"Friends" helped spread the word. And this year, for the first time, Sierra Madre's own radio station RadioFishbowl. com helped spread the word, both on Facebook and over the internet "airwaves." It was mentioned earlier in this article, and others, that the creche figures were restored this year by Friends of the Arts. The Chamber is paying for the supplies to make that happen, however, each of the Sierra Madre Christian churches helped fund the project as well. Bethany, Episcopal Church of the Ascension, Sierra Madre Congregational Church, St. Rita Catholic Church, and United Methodist Church of Sierra Madre all donated funds to the artists and Friends of the Arts. As crazy as it may sound, with all the people and organizations that have been mentioned as having played a part in making this a truly community event, I can guarantee you that someone or some group has been left out. If you were inadvertently omitted, please know that your contribution is appreciated, even if your name escaped me as I write this. Overseeing all this activity is the Sierra Madre Chamber of Commerce. Says Matt Krantz, president of the Chamber of Commerce, “We really want to thank all the people and groups that contribute to making Dickens Village the great event that it is. There is so much work and so many contributions by so many that are a part of this event, that it really is a special opportunity to see Sierra Madre being Sierra Madre. “ Matt doesn’t just say these things, he knows from experience. In addition to donating Bean Town’s blow-ups for the wonderland, Matt set up and tore down that area, helped set up the tree and the lights, ran errands all over town, including picking up the generator for the blow-ups, candy canes for Santa, and bell ornaments for the tree. He personally recruited the Boy Scouts to help at the snow and Barry Schwam for the horse and buggy booth. He and his brother-in-law Jacob Deveau also worked all five hours pushing the sledders down the hill. And these are just some of his many contributions. So, as you can see, it truly does take a village, in this case our Foothill Village, to make Dickens Village.

For the period of Sunday, November 6, through Saturday, November 12, the Police Department responded to 954 calls for service of which 121 required formal investigations. The following is a summary report of the major incidents handled by the Department during this period. Sunday, November 6: Shortly after 4:00 p.m., an officer responded to the Santa Anita Race Track, 285 West Huntington Drive, regarding a female adult being detained for Battery and Drunk in Public. The officer made contact with the security officers who explained the suspect was unable to care for herself and also spit at an officer’s face. Through investigation, the officer determined the 27-year-old was intoxicated, and transported her to the Arcadia City Jail for booking. At about 1:17 a.m., officers observed a green Honda Accord speeding on Santa Anita Avenue and conducted an enforcement stop south of Live Oak Avenue. Upon contact, the officer noticed an odor of alcohol emitting from his person. Through investigation, the officer determined the 38-year-old Hispanic male was driving under the influence, and placed him under arrest for DUI. Monday, November 7: Around 7:00 p.m., an officer was dispatched to the area of Naomi Avenue and Golden West Avenue in reference to a physical altercation. An investigation revealed a road rage incident resulted in a mutual battery. A 63-yearold Asian male driver
became upset after a vehicle cut him off, so he passed the vehicle to make a stop in front of it. He approached the driver, and while the 17year old Asian male rolled down his window, the man pushed him in his chest and face. The juvenile attempted to exit but the man slammed the door on his leg. Thereafter, the juvenile forced the door open and repeatedly punched the driver. Both parties were not desirous of prosecution. At roughly 7:10 p.m., an officer responded to the 100 block of South Old Ranch Road in reference to a residential burglary. The victim explained she left her house unlocked with her purse sitting either next to the front door or on the dining room table. When the victim returned, she observed the front door open and noticed her purse was missing. The suspect(s) fled undetected. Tuesday, November 8: At approximately 1:38 p.m., officers were dispatched to JC Penny, at the Westfield Santa Anita Mall, 400 South Baldwin Avenue, regarding two suspects running away from security. The suspects concealed merchandise in a large shopping bag and left without making payment. When loss prevention officers confronted the suspects, they ran and dropped the stolen merchandise. Officers detained one suspect in the 500 block of South Baldwin Avenue but were unable to locate the second suspect.
The 20-year old Asian male was arrested for Commercial Burglary and transported to the Arcadia City Jail for booking. At about 5:00 p.m., officers responded to the Arcadia Police Department front counter regarding a lost property report. The victim advised she lost her debit card and three checkbooks when she went to Western Union, 745 Naomi Avenue, on November 2nd. After reviewing her checking account, the victim
noticed one check had been forged and fraudulently cashed on the same day of her visit. Further investigation is being conducted by the Detective Bureau. Wednesday, November 9: Around 5:00 p.m., an officer responded to the Dootson Business Park, 11629 Clark Street, in reference to found
property. A transportation maintenance worker found a container with three bags of a green leafy substance while cleaning under an unsecured shipping dock. Department to be destroyed. O n November 8th at about 4:00 p.m., a juvenile female was walking home from Dana Middle School, northbound on the east sidewalk of Third Avenue at Leda Lane. The juvenile noticed an older red GMC full-size van traveling southbound on Third Avenue and observed it slow down next to her. The juvenile noticed the driver looking at her with a big smile and quickly walked into the nearest residential driveway. The juvenile called her mother and observed the vehicle proceed southbound on
Third Avenue out of sight. The driver is described as a thin Hispanic male, late 50s, with a grey or white mustache. Thursday, November 10: Shortly after 10:00 a.m., an officer was traveling southbound on Second Avenue in the area of Live Oak Avenue, and observed a suspicious adult male subject carrying a backpack and a cellular phone. The officer made consensual contact and conducted a search of his person and backpack. The officer located a jar containing ten individually wrapped baggies of marijuana, a digital pocket scale, and cash. The officer noticed the subject’s phone kept ringing and he refused to let his phone be checked. The 23-year-old Hispanic was arrested for Possession of Marijuana for Sales and transported to the Arcadia City Jail for booking. At about 2:38 p.m., an officer observed a vehicle lane-swerving, nearly hitting the side curb on South Fifth Street at East Camino Real Avenue. The officer conducted a traffic stop and noticed a strong odor of alcohol coming from inside the vehicle. A vehicle search revealed two open bottles and one empty can of alcohol. Through investigation, the officer determined the 22-year-old Hispanic male was driving under the influence with a blood alcohol level greater than 0.08, and arrested him for DUI.
Friday, November 11: At approximately 10:32 p.m., an officer responded to Macy’s at the Westfield Santa Anita Mall, 400 South Baldwin Avenue, regarding a theft report. Loss prevention personnel observed a 45-year-old White female conceal merchandise in her purse, and remove the tag from a sweater and put it on. A short time later, the suspect left the store wearing the sweater and did not make payment. While searching the suspect’s purse, the officer discovered illegal drugs and paraphernalia. She was charged with Petty Theft, Possession of a Controlled Substance, and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia. At about 4:40 p.m., an officer responded to the Arcadia Police Department front counter regarding an identity theft report. The victim received two emails from someone pretending to be his friend, which asked for money to return home from Scotland. The victim wired money twice to the location requested and became suspicious when he received a third email. When the victim spoke with his friend, she knew nothing about the matter. The victim is desirous of prosecution for Theft by False Pretenses. Saturday, November 12: Around 4:37 p.m., an officer responded to the 000 block of Fano Street regarding a residential burglary report. Sometime between November 6th and November 12th, unknown suspect(s) gained entry into the residence through the garage and ransacked the bedrooms. Several items were reported stolen. lia - Suspect Arrested On November 16 at 7:05 p.m., police received a call reporting a suspicious vehicle parked at Greystone and Ivy. Officers arrived and found the male occupant was preparing to ingest heroin. He was arrested for possession of narcotics and narcotics paraphernalia and taken into custody. Serial Vandalism On November 16 at 8:09 p.m., police received a call reporting a vandalism incident that had just occurred in the 300 block of East Colorado. Two male suspects were seen “tagging” a wall and fleeing on foot. Officers arrived and began a search of the area. A witness told an officer the suspects ran through an apartment complex. Officers entered the complex and were seen by the suspects, who immediately attempted to run away. They were detained quickly and positively identified by the witness. series of recent vandalism. The suspects each confessed to other crimes and led officers to additional unreported vandalisms. Also discovered during the investigation were the identities of two previously unknown suspects. These two have also been responsible for many recent vandalism incidents. The suspects, a male juvenile and male adult, were booked for vandalism. The juvenile was cited and released to his mother. The adult was booked for felony vandalism and contributing to the delinquency of a minor. Other charges are pending on all four suspects. Detective Bureau Case Follow-Up Monrovia Special Enforcement Team officers assisted the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department serving several warrants. Three warrants were served in Monrovia. The warrants resulted in three arrests and the recovery of four guns.
