Comptroller Chiang Highlights Local Government Compensation California State Comptroller John Chiang’s office has updated their website with considerable detail on local government’s compensation within the state.

The website: http://lgcr.sco. ca.gov/ , will show you every city and every dept’s salary range therein.

In a press release issued on August 3, 2010, Controller John Chiang announced new reporting requirements for all California cities and counties, directing them to clearly identify elected officials’ and public employees’ compensation. While many cities have posted some information on their websites, this website update from Chiang’s office is highly detailed and makes for some interesting reading.

BY DOROTHY DENNE Old age is like a bank account. You can withdraw only what you have put in. Every morning when we wake up we have a choice: we can spend the day in bed recounting the difficulty we have with the parts of our bodies that no longer work, or get out of bed and be thankful for the ones that do. So, this morning I got up. I did a few things. I thought of doing a few more things. Instead I sat down and began glancing through one of a stack of magazines.

One article grabbed my attention. It was a 12step guide for junkaholics. It wasn’t a 12-step as in ‘turn it over to your higher power, attend regular meetings, read the Big Book’. It was 12 ideas from a cleaning expert on how to get rid of clutter.

He had some good ideas, especially for other people.

I thought some would be a little tough for me.

I wonder.

Who named him an expert?

What are his qualificatons?

Has anyone ever checked to see if his house is cluttered? Does he maybe have a wife or roommate who cleans the clutter?

Can’t help it. I have to question. I’m a firm believer in that adage - anything that sounds too good to be true, probably is.

He says to start small and do one drawer per session. The whole job will make you feel overwhelmed. I say he’s right about that. One drawer is accomplishable. Besides it is helpful to have another messy drawer to move a few things to, temporarily.

I don’t make any promises when the next session will be.

He says to get tough.

Ask if each object is earning its keep. If not, out it goes. I say how do I know I won’t need it next week if I toss it today? Just becuse I haven’t needed it for three years doesn’t really mean I never will.

He says don’t get sidetracked. If you stop to read every old letter or look at every old photo, you’ll never get anywhere.

I say plan enough time to read and look at them all. That’s why they were saved in the first place. I’ll maybe save them again.

Probably.

He says to save magazine articles, not whole magazines, and file them right away. I say if I file them I’ll forget what I filed them under. This way I’ll know whatever I want is right here in one of these piles and the date and source didn’t get cut off accidentally.

He says to set a limit on saving bags, containers and boxes. Ten is reasonable. Fifty is not. I say I agree. But then, I want to be sure I have exactly the right size and shape.

He says to treat unwanted gifts like flowers.

You appreciate the sentiment but you don’t have to keep them forever. I say that I keep the flowers too.

I just press them in the magazines I’m keeping.

He says to get rid of two old garments everytime you buy a new one.

I say I need to save them for everyday. Too, I might gain or lose a little weight and I’ll need them. Besides, if two go out each time and only one comes in, I’ll eventually go in the hole and get down to the Birthday Suit. It really isn’t too pretty any more.

He says to take the Stuff to the dump the same day because the next day you may reconsider. I say if you can put it out of sight, you can keep it.

Veteran’s Day TheGoodLife

It is a day set aside to honor and to express our appreciation to all of those brave service men and women who have served our nation so gallantly. Veteran’s Day is a time to remember those men and women who have made the ultimate sacrifice of giving their lives to preserve freedom in our nation as well as many other nations around the world.

It is also a great time to fly our National Flag, Old Glory, in respect of those veterans who have endured obstacles and suffering, but who fought courageously to guarantee our sovereign rights to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.

Today there are thousands of our troops returning home that have been severely injured with the loss of limbs, burned and even blinded while serving our country in Iraq, Afghanistan or Pakistan.

The Doozies

Sadly, many wounded service personnel will return home broken financially as well as broken physically with life changing injuries. These veterans need comprehensive care; many need coordinated financial and other support that will enable them to swiftly make that difficult life adjustment back into our society.

There are many caring people who are helping these brave men and women and their families to rebuild their lives. But there is never enough!

They need your help. For some, it’s paying bills because the financial strains of the adjustment are so overwhelming. For others, it’s a computer so they can continue their education.

And for others it may be just simple thoughtfulness of taking them to a concert or entertainment event to help break the monotony of rehabilitation.

These Patriotic Hero’s were fully aware of the risks and dangers of fighting for our country, but still volunteered to do so anyway.

So now it is our turn to volunteer to help them. During this difficult economic time, get involved! These wounded heroes desperately need your help, thoughts, prayers, and well wishes as their reward for the great sacrifices that they have made while serving our country. Thank you for caring enough to get involved to bring joy to a Veteran during the upcoming Holidays.

Pasadena YWCA Honors Anthony Stewart On October 18, 2010 more than 500 community leaders, including elected officials from Altadena, Pasadena and our state Senate and Assembly, celebrated the YWCA’s 8th annual Women for Racial Justice Breakfast honoring Anthony Stewart, commonly known as Tony with the 2010 Racial Justice Award. Also in attendance were large numbers of community leaders, YWCA “Just for Girls” program participants, and representatives from charitable, non-profit organizations and businesses.

Tony Stewart, this year’s 2010 Racial Justice Award Winner, has been a key figure in the elimination of racism beginning with her work to integrate the Pine Bluff library in Arkansas in 1927 to chartering the Altadena NAACP chapter in 1984 and founding the Black Coalition on Education, which was responsible for creating diversity in leadership. Najeeba SyeedMiller, an international leader in conflict resolution in inter-ethnic, violent and multi-faith conflicts was the keynote speaker. KNBC reporter Beverly White was emcee.

The event, produced by the volunteers of the YWCA’s Women for Racial Justice Breakfast Committee, was chaired by Molly Munger and co-chaired by Angela Myers-Rackleff and Abby Lloyd Sabin. The event also kicked off the YWCA Week without Violence.

s the number of local people who need help to feed their families continues to grow, Foothill Unity Center is gearing up for its biggest Thanksgiving food distribution ever. “Last year, we served more than 1,500 pre-registered families that included over 5,000 men, women and children,” says Volunteer Coordinator Raina Diaz. “Since times have been really tough, more folks are unemployed and in crisis, and the need for our services has grown. This year’s numbers will be even higher than last year’s, and we need the community’s support more than ever.”

Volunteers are still needed to fill morning and afternoon food sorting shifts Monday, November 8, through Tuesday, November 16 in preparation for the Thanksgiving distribution. Box Packing Day is Saturday, November 20.

Shifts also need to be filled for Monday, November 22, and Tuesday, November 23, to help distribute food and assist clients during the event in Ayers Hall at the LA County Arboretum. More help is needed on the 23rd from 1 to 5 p.m. to handle breakdown and cleanup. “What we always need most are turkey certificates,” says Center Deputy Director Betty McWilliams. “Our wish list also includes canned meats, tuna, vegetables, fruits, pumpkin pie filling, cranberry sauce, chili, beans and hearty soups … mixes for cornbread, biscuits, cake, cookies, stuffing and gravy … frosting, marshmallows, Jell-o®, jams and jellies … cold and hot cereals … salad dressing … and yams.” Donations may be dropped off any weekday between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. at either Center location: 415 W. Chestnut Ave. in Monrovia or 191 N. Oak Ave. in Pasadena.

Donated funds help the Center fill in the gaps for this large event. Adopt an angel, bring joy to a child The Center has launched its 2010 Angel Program — an annual community tradition that helped provide toys and clothing for 3,040 children

of low-income families last year. The Center needs volunteers to decorate the paper angels, which feature labels with client children’s gift wishes. It also invites everyone to adopt angel(s) and shop for the children’s gifts on them.

(Many organizations and businesses adopt entire flights of angels during the holidays.) Angels can be ordered and picked up at the Center’s Monrovia and Pasadena locations.

Now in its thirtieth year, Foothill Unity Center, as the Community Action Agency for the Foothill Area provides a range of crisis services to help low-income families survive these times. Operating with a small staff and a corps of dedicated volunteers, the nonprofit, nondenominational organization distributed over four million pounds of food to 3,974 unduplicated very low-income families in Pasadena, Altadena, South Pasadena, Monrovia, Arcadia, Duarte, Sierra Madre, Bradbury, Baldwin Park, Irwindale and Azusa last year. The Center also provides some health services, limited motel vouchers, and referrals to the homeless and people in crisis.

Classical, Romantic Era Music for Pasadena Community Orchestra

BY BILL PETERS The Pasadena Community Orchestra begins its 27th season at 8:00 p.m. Friday, Nov. 5 with a program of masterpiece quality, a conductor in his third season, and a soloist from the Los Angeles Philharmonic.

The Pasadena Community Orchestra continues its tradition of presenting the most celebrated classical music in the program that opens their four-concert series at the First Church of the Nazarene in Pasadena.

From the Romantic era, the hundred year span from 1815-1915, the orchestra

will perform works by Lalo (“Overture to Le Roi d’Ys”) and Tchaikovsky (“Sleeping Beauty” selections) and, with violin soloist Mischa Lefkowitz, Schubert’s Rondo in Amajor. From the earlier classical period, Lefkowitz will perform Joseph Haydn’s Concerto No. 2 in G-major.

Violinist Lefkowitz, a member of the L A Philharmonic since 1977, is a highly honored musician who has appeared as soloist internationally with such orchestras as the London Philharmonic, Detroit Symphony and performed in the most presti-

gious music and chamber series world wide. He records on the Laurel, Cambria Sequence and Pantheon labels.

Conductor of the Pasadena Community Orchestra is Alan Reinecke who took the reins of the orchestra from the founder of the orchestra, his father, Wayne Reinecke two seasons ago.

Alan Reinecke is a busy freelance musician as a percussionist. But in his first two seasons, he won plaudits for his easy and collaborative style of conducting. Under his direction, the ensemble of serious musicians, numbering around 70, continues to thrive as it successfully serves the community with its excellence.

The Board of Directors of the orchestra includes Bette Solomon, President, and Raffi Balian, Fritzie Culick, Don Fisher, Sally Hall, Levon H. Keshishian, Susie Kyropoulos, JoAnne Lazar, and Mark Nakatani.

All concerts of the Pasadena Community Orchestra are offered free to the public.

Trainer tips Kidnapping Suspect Turns Himself In A Flat Stomach – The Skinny

BY LYNDA LINFORTH Ask any person who wants to lose weight where they want to see the most change and the majority will answer “I want a flat stomach”.

From childhood to young adult hood, we do not seem to have a problem maintaining a flat stomach, yet it seems to be the first thing to deteriorate. Here are some pointers to improve the appearance of the mid-section.

No exercise regime should be attempted without a consultation and consent from your physician.

1. Body-Fat loss: Reducing overall body fat will reduce the mid-section. The body cannot be “spot-trained” to lose only in one place, so 30 minutes of cardio vascular activity every day is a really good place to start losing bodyfat from all over.

2. Strengthening: The muscular structure of the body is designed to work in symmetry and when one muscle group becomes weak or tight, the opposing group is also affected. Poor posture is often responsible for a pooch. When the rectus abdominus (abs) are weak and allowed to hang, the erector spinae (lower back) becomes tight and weak. This, in turn, results in an anterior pelvic tilt facilitating a hanging stomach. Performing specific exercises to strengthen

the abdominals and the lower back can improve posture and reduce the appearance of a rounded stomach. These exercises do not flatten the stomach by themselves! By far the best exercises are functional exercises that focus on the core (torso). This is because they are multijoint and muscle exercises that increase the heart rate and burn far more overall calories than just an abmachine or crunches.

3. Nutrition: Eating a healthy, balanced diet is paramount to achieving a flatter stomach. In fact, the above two activities will not produce premium results without proper nutrition. Many foods are responsible for keeping weight on the mid-section: saturated fats, alcohol, sugar and sodium are among the main offenders.

4. Stand up, sit down, draw in: We are a nation of sitters: car, office and sofa (usually in that order and then repeat the next day).

In a seated position, our abdominals are not forced to engage unless we are sitting in a strict, upright position. When the abdominals are not working neither is the lower back and they position themselves in a lazy slouch.

When sitting up straight, draw the bellybutton to

the spine without holding the breath. This exercise is designed to make you aware of your posture and help stop your abdominals and lower back from becoming lazy.

5. Water Drinking lots of water a day can help alleviate water retention which often settles around the abdominal area.

The National Association of Sports Medicine recommends 96 oz per day for an active person but check with a physician or nutritionist to find out optimum water intake.

Remember, there is no fast track to a flatter stomach, it takes time and perseverance. Strong abdominals and lower back muscles are key to fighting back pain, poor posture and an unsightly bulge.

City of Hope knows that fighting one women’s cancer at a time is not enough. To advance lifesaving research and ensure women everywhere benefit from new and improved therapies, City of Hope’s Los Angeles Walk for Hope is expanding to fund research for breast and gynecological cancers. On Sunday, November 7, at City of Hope in Duarte, Calif., thousands of survivors and supporters take steps to support lifesaving research at City of Hope, one of the nation’s leading cancer research and treatment centers.

“Research at City of Hope not only focuses on developing new treatments for women with breast and gynecological cancers, but also addresses ways to improve these patients’

quality of life,” said Joanne Mortimer, M.D., director of City of Hope’s Women’s Cancers Program. “These cancers attack the body and the soul, undermining how women see themselves at their very core and how they relate to their families and friends. We are committed to both curing and healing the whole patient.”

As part of this commitment, City of Hope’s Women’s Cancers Program is an interdisciplinary effort that brings together researchers and clinicians to improve outcomes for these cancers. Researchers are investigating risk factors for breast, ovarian and endometrial cancers as well as interventions that could reduce those risks. Researchers also are identifying potential therapies, including targeted treatments, and prevention methods, and exploring the challenges experienced by women to help ease the complications survivors may face.

“We’re thrilled to have the support of Walk for Hope. The money our walkers and their donors provide will give us the boost we need to help even more women live longer, healthier lives,” said Mortimer.

In its 16-year history, Walk for Hope has raised more than $29 million for breast cancer research, treatment and education.

To Tea or Not to Tea - that my dear voters - is the Question!

aving hailed from Great Britain, I have always been rather partial to a nice cup of tea. However after seeing the tactics of that last bastion of “fair and balanced” journalism - FOX news – I’ve developed rather a bitter taste in my mouth when it comes to Tea Time. The FOX propelled TEA party , extreme right wing fanatics have really given me a distinct abhorrence for the aforementioned staple of the British Empire.

The bitter taste of the so called “tea party” leaves little to the imagination and an great deal of questions about what is right and that which is so very, very wrong.

There are some who claim they are a “proud member of the Angry Mob” referring to that inglorious bastard child of the GOP– The Tea Party… but what the heck does anger and violence accomplish? One such Tea Party supporter caught my attention recently on a debatable, anonymous comment driven, blog which seems devoted to bashing four members of the current city council in Sierra Madre and singing the praises of one who happens to be, you guessed it, a Tea Party supporter.

If you read between the thinly veiled tea-leaf lines of these contributors and the blog’s moderator, one can quickly see the insufferable and those who hold the same philosophy dear to their tell tale hearts.

The racist, anti-gay, antimuslim and pro-life rhetoric of The Tea Party is blatant and very disturbing - certainly getting a lot of attention in the days leading up to the mid terms.

Without pointing too many fingers or naming too many names, there is a moderately tepid Tea Party contingent in Pasadena and Sierra Madre. Former Sierra Madre Mayor (now a council member) Mary Ann MacGillivray, De and Pat Alcorn among others in Sierra Madre are staunch supporters of the Tea Party according to the Pasadena Patriots’ website.

The Monrovia Unified School District has partnered with the Santa Anita Family YMCA and the Network for Healthy California to collect “extra” Halloween candy on November 1st at every elementary school and the Canyon Early Learning Center. From 7:30 to 7:50 a.m. on that Monday designated representatives will be at the schools collecting the candy.

For each pound of candy a student donates, he or she will receive a raffle ticket.

Each school will conduct

a drawing for a new bike.

The bikes were donated to the “Y” by the sponsors of the event, Dr. Paul Genino (a dentist of course), Sam Wright State Farm Insurance and Jesus is Lord Christian Center.

emple City welcomed hundreds of visitors to Temple City Park as all enjoyed a fun-filled day at the Family Fall Jubilee on Saturday, October 23. As part of the day’s festivities, fiftyplus car enthusiasts participated in the annual Temple City Car Show.

POLICE BLOTTERS Arcadia PD

For the period of Sunday, October 17, through Saturday, October 23, the Police Department responded to 885 calls for service of which 137 required formal investigations. The following is a summary report of the major incidents handled by the Department during this period.

Sunday, October 17: Two intoxicated male drivers were involved in separate traffic accidents and they were both arrested for DUI. A 30-year-old Hispanic driver struck a curb, which caused his vehicle to overturn at Huntington and Baldwin around 1:58 a.m.

Shortly after 4:00 a.m., a 23-year-old Asian driver also collided with a curb at Colorado and Harvard.

Around 4:42 p.m., units responded to Public Storage, 12340 Lower Azusa, regarding a burglary that occurred between April 1 and June 20. Unknown suspect(s) cut the padlock to a storage unit and stole safes, statues, and a laptop computer.

Monday, October 18: Between 6:00 p.m. on October 17 and 7:30 a.m. on October 18, two auto burglaries were reported in the 800 block of West Huntington. Unknown suspect(s) smashed car windows and stole a GPS unit from one vehicle and a portable gaming unit from another.

A grand theft occurred at the Disney Store located at Westfield Mall between 10:00 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. Fifteen Mickey Mouse watches were stolen from a display shelf for a reported loss of over $442.

Tuesday, October 19: Around 5:32 p.m., loss prevention personnel from JC Penney advised that they had detained a man for theft. The suspect was seen selecting clothing items and then hiding them on his person and a bag that he had brought with him. A private person’s arrest was made, and a 25-year-old Hispanic was taken into custody for commercial burglary and for a $30,000 outstanding misdemeanor warrant. A stolen book from Border’s was also recovered.

Officers were dispatched to the 100 block of White Oak around 5:30 p.m. in reference to a fraud.

The elderly victim was

tricked into sending over $7,500 to Barcelona, Spain in order to bail his grandson out of jail. Unknown suspects called and claimed to be representatives from the U.S. Embassy in Spain and instructed the victim on how to complete wire transfers of funds. After the victim sent the money through Western Union, he discovered that his grandson was not in jail and has never been to Spain.

Wednesday, October 20: A residential burglary occurred between 1:55 p.m. and 2:50 p.m. in the 300 block of San Antonio. Unknown suspect(s) entered the home via an unsecured kitchen window and stole a large amount of expensive jewelry, Cartier and Piaget watches, and several Hermes handbags.

Between 10:45 a.m. and 5:30 p.m., another residential burglary occurred in the 1100 block of Arcadia. Unknown suspect(s) pried open the front door to gain entry.

Once inside, the suspect(s) ransacked rooms and stole numerous jewelry items.

Thursday, October 21: Around 1:33 p.m., officers responded to First Avenue Middle School in reference to an alleged child abuse case. Investigation revealed that an 11-year-old female student was struck several times with a hairbrush by her father for lying about a homework assignment.

The student sustained visible injuries and the Department of Children and Family Services was notified. She was taken into protective custody, and her 32-year-old father was arrested for child cruelty.

A burglary occurred around 6:00 p.m. in the 800 block of West Huntington.

A female victim parked her car in her garage after running errands and cashing a check at a bank. She left the garage door open and once she exited the vehicle to walk towards the entry way, a male Hispanic suspect ran in and took her purse from the front passenger seat. The suspect then fled in an older white four-door sedan driven by another suspect. The total loss was over $2,900.

Friday, October 22: A victim came to the station around 5:52 p.m. to file a fraud report. She received phone calls from Macy’s, Chase, and Discover on Sep-

tember 28 and 29 asking if she had made over $3,600 in recent credit card purchases.

She checked her accounts and discovered all the unauthorized transactions.

Shortly after 6:50 p.m., units responded to Santa Anita Inn, 130 West Huntington, regarding suspicious persons in the area. Officers contacted a female driver and a record check revealed that she was on probation for drug related charges. A consent search of the vehicle was conducted and a baggie of marijuana, a digital scale, and a glass-smoking pipe were located. A 33-year-old Caucasian was arrested at the scene for possession of drug paraphernalia and possession of marijuana. During the booking search, a baggie of methamphetamine was found hidden in her bra.

Saturday, October 23: A traffic stop was initiated at Peck and Lower A z u s a around 9:43 a.m. because the registered owner of a vehicle had four outstanding misdemeanor warrants. A 44-year-old male Hispanic driver was arrested for suspended/revoked license and the outstanding warrants. A 51-year-old male Hispanic passenger was also taken into custody for an outstanding felony warrant and possession of marijuana. A baggie of methamphetamine was also found hidden in the driver’s sock during the booking process.

Between 5:05 p.m. and 9:30 p.m., a grand theft auto occurred at Westfield Mall.

Residential Burglary On October 16, a residential burglary occurred between 6 and 10 p.m. in the 200 block of West Cypress. The suspects made entry through an unlocked bathroom window. Miscellaneous jewelry was taken.

Stolen Vehicle On October 18 at 6:40 a.m., an officer responded to the 200 block of East Pomona on a vehicle theft report.

A red Acura Integra was stolen from the street in front of the victim’s residence. No suspects were seen.

Suicide Investigation On October 18 at 8:23 a.m., an officer responded to a hotel in the 900 block of South Fifth regarding a subject who had committed suicide by overdosing on prescription drugs.

An adult male subject who had been living at the hotel for the past three months was found deceased in the room by his roommate. The investigation revealed the deceased was despondent over recently losing his job and he had a history of depression. A Los Angeles County Coroner’s investigator responded to the scene for further investigation.

During the last seven day period, the Police Department handled 556 service events, resulting in 108 investigations. Following are the last week’s highlighted issues and events:

Stolen Vehicle On October 18 at 12:18 p.m., an officer was dispatched to the area of Duarte and Encino regarding a stolen vehicle. The victim parked his 1991, red Honda CRX across the street from his residence over the weekend. When he returned to where he had parked his vehicle, he discovered it had been stolen. The victim had no idea who could have stolen his vehicle and no witnesses were located.

Residential Burglary On October 15, a residential burglary occurred between 4 p.m. and 10:55 p.m. in the 300 block of Bradbury. The female victim left her residence and was gone for a few hours.

When she returned, she discovered her residence had been ransacked. The victim

Death Report On October 18 at 3:53 p.m., an officer was dispatched to the 200 block of Linwood regarding a death investigation. The deceased was found by a caregiver who was sent to the location at the brother’s request. The brother had not heard from his sister for over two weeks.

Officers arrived and located the deceased 63-year-old woman. No obvious signs of foul play were found. A Los Angeles County Coroner’s investigator responded to the scene for further investigation.

Commercial Burglary On October 18 at 7:59 p.m., loss prevention from a business in the 500 block of West Huntington called and reported two subjects who had stolen merchandise from the store. The male suspect ran, but the female suspect was detained. Officers made an area search but did not locate the male suspect. The suspects had entered the store and put merchandise into an empty purse and backpack. The male exited without paying for the merchandise, while the female paid for two small items. She did not pay for the merchandise she had concealed in a large black bag. All merchandise was recovered. The male suspect is still outstanding and the female had no identification.

Immigration was advised and an ICE hold was issued, as the suspect was found to be a prior deportee.

Prowling On October 19 at 10:36 p.m., a resident at an apartment complex in the 700 block of South Myrtle called to report that she observed two subjects dressed in dark clothing on the roof of the complex. The subjects appeared to be making an attempt to get down to a balcony from the roof. Officers responded and set up a perimeter. The garage and roof access were searched, but the subjects were not located. No damage or loss occurred; however, it was clear the two male suspects were seeking ways to get into an apartment.

Stolen Vehicle On October 19 at 6:49 a.m., a vehicle was reported stolen from the 700 block of East Lime. The vehicle was taken sometime between 8 p.m. and 6:49 a.m. The vehicle taken was a black 2000 Honda Civic.

Residential Burglary On October 19 at 12:27 p.m., an officer was dispatched to a residence in the 500 block of Norumbega.

The resident left the location at 10:45 a.m., and their housekeeper arrived at the residence at 11:45 a.m. The housekeeper noticed the dog was keeping its distance, which is unusual. She then noticed the back window was smashed and she exited the residence. The police were called. It appears the suspect sprayed the dog with pepper spray or mace to keep the dog away. The suspect fled the location with jewelry.

Residential Burglary On October 19 at 12:39 p.m., an officer responded to the 900 block of Norumbega regarding a residential burglary. The resident had left the location and returned approximately two hours later. When they re-

Officers determined that a domestic battery occurred between the man and woman. Officers arrested the man and transported him to Pasadena Police Department Jail for booking.

“Gentleman Joe” Ragsdale Remembered

oseph Benjamin Ragsdale was born in Tennessee in 1911 and passed away here earlier this month. True to his southern roots, Joe was always a gentleman with courtly manners. He was born in Martin, Tennessee on September 11, 1911 remaining on his home state, he married Doris “Dee Dee” Baxter and together they had three daughters, Billie, Ginger and Linda and a son, Joseph Benjamin Ragsdale Jr. The family moved to California during World War II when Ragsdale was hired as the procurement officer at Norton AFB. His daughter, Linda recalled first arriving in California and her father remarking “look at those mountains; smell the orange blossoms.” She recalled that her father had a deep love of nature and instilled that loved in his entire family. But that was only one of the values he imparted to his children.

His brother John said that “ethics” was the first word that came to mind when he thought of his brother. “I may be a foot taller than Joe, but I always looked up to my big brother,” he said.

“In the south we say ‘A man is as good as his word;’ with my brother that was true. His handshake was as good as a contract.”

John also told a story about the faith he has in his brother who was 13 year old than he. “I always knew I could trust Joe, and so I went to him one Christmas time when I was about 5 or 6 and asked him about Santa Claus. He told me Santa liked to do things for children who deserved. I told him I wanted to meet Santa, but he explained that Santa was kind of shy. However, on Christmas Eve I was in my room when Joe yelled from the front room, ‘Johnny, Johnny come quick.’ I raced into the room and Joe turned away from the window and told me I had just missed Santa. I knew I could always trust my brother, and so to this day, even thought I am 85 years old, on Christmas Eve, someone says ‘There’s Santa,’ I turn around.”

Ragsdale’s oldest daughter, Billie said reiterated that credo by which he lived and which he passed on to all his children, “He used to tell us ‘be honest, have integrity in everything you do and when you finish your

work, find something else to do.’”

His daughter Linda said that her father didn’t just live by the ethics he imparted to his children. She recalled that the whole family would sit around the dinner table after the meal and discuss ethics.

All his daughters pointed out that their father was more than just an ethical man. “He was a real stick-

ler for the rules,” Linda said, adding, He was a real competitor, but a fair one.” His daughter Billie remembered the hand slapping game they played. Joe would hold his hands out, palms up, and his daughter would try to hit them. “I never hit his hands,” she said.

Ragsdale is well remembered as the manager of the Sherwin Williams Paint store on Myrtle Avenue here in Monrovia, a position he held for 30 years. Recently at the all class reunion of MAD high school, a member of the class of ‘50 was reminiscing and asked about “Mr. Ragsdale.”

The man said “He gave me my first real job and my work ethic. I’ve done well and he gave me the basis.”

Even after he retired from his work at Sherwin Williams, Ragsdale was not ready to completely retire and so began working at Century 21 Real Estate with Tom Adams. He was involved in organized real estate for many years receiving his real estate license in 1972 and continuing on until recognized as a “Life Member” of the California Association of Realtors. At the age of 95 Ragsdale received a standing ovation from over 800 attendees at the Century 21 Regional Awards Dinner for

achieving membership in the Masters Awards Club for that year. Of Ragsdale, Tom said, “I had the distinct honor of calling Joe my friend; he is missed” He was not all work.

Ragsdale was a long standing member of the Rotary Club of Monrovia, serving as its President in 1955/1956. He was also very active in the board of Santa Anita Family YMCA and served with distinction during the time when it gained its independence from Pasadena in 1999. He was a life member of the Elks, a past member of the Kiwanis.

He was a long time member of the Monrovia Tennis Club where he played tennis into his early 80’s. He was a member of the Monrovia Dance Club. He and his wife DeeDee were outstanding ballroom dancers. Ragsdale was also active in the Monrovia Chambers of Commerce.

Music was a large part of his life and always in his home. He began playing the piano when he was 7 years old and later put together a band while he was in college. For many years he was involved in the musical productions at Royal Oaks Manor. Joe loved house boating, camping, and fishing with family and friends and traveling the world with his wife DeeDee who proceeded him in death.

Above all else, he was realist. His brother said that facing reality was part of who he was. “He came up through the depression years. He was a realist and he wanted to face reality.” His friend Tom Adams, who reported on Joe’s condition each week at Rotary that shortly before he died, Ragsdale had told him “I’m tired of this.”

He will be greatly missed by his family and friends and the community which he so dearly loved. He was preceded in death by his parents May Bell and John Adam Ragsdale, his son Joseph Benjamin Ragsdale, Jr.

and his wife of 47 years, Doris “Dee Dee” Walter Baxter Ragsdale. He is survived by his brother John Adam Ragsdale, Jr. of San Bernardino, California, daughters, Billie Dahl of Albuquerque, New Mexico, Virginia “Ginger” Anderson of Laguna Woods, California, Linda and James Mueller of Flagstaff, Arizona, Daughter-in law Sherry Ragsdale of Whittier, California, Stepson John Thurlow and Gloria Baxter of, Prescott Arizona, 14 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren and 15 great, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

The Celebration of life for Joseph B. Ragsdale will be Friday, October 29th at 6:30. The location will be at the Monrovia Historical Museum at 742 E. Lemon Ave., Monrovia, CA 91016. Donations may be made to the Santa Anita Family YMCA at 501 S. Mountain Ave., Monrovia, CA 91016.

proceeds of the inaugural event which also benefits the nonprofit Rotoplast Foundation, which performs cleft palate surgeries on children.

The Sierra Madre Chamber of Commerce announced that shuttle tickets to ride up to view the Wistaria Vine at its annual Wistaria Festival are now available online. The 2011 Wistaria Festival will take place on March 20th, 2011.

The Wistaria Festival features tours of the world’s largest blossoming plant, certified as such by the Guinness Book of World Records. Each year, the property owners upon whose land the vine sits, the Solts and the Dorrances, open their property to allow thousands to view the vine.

Dozens of Sierra Madre residents volunteer to act as docents at the property, telling the story of the vine, which was originally planted from a 1-gallon pot that was

purchased for $0.75 in 1894.

At its peak, the vine covered more than an acre of ground, and in the early 20th century was so large that it even destroyed a home that was under it.

In addition to the tours of the vine, the two main downtown streets of Sierra Madre are closed to traffic so that 175 juried crafters and artists can set up booths to display and sell their arts/ crafts. Downtown village shops are open, and more than a dozen musical acts perform at five outdoor venues. Memorial Park is transformed into a combination Kids/Food zone, as bouncy houses, slides, rock climbing and other kids attractions set up in the park alongside food vendors, both for profit and non-profit alike.

The shuttle to the vine from downtown avoids a long uphill walk from downtown to the neighborhood in which the vine sits. “Day of” tickets for the shuttle have been reduced from $15 to $12 this year, and pre-sale tickets are just $10.

This year, for the first time, seniors and kids (6 to 16) receive a discounted rate of $7. Children under five ride for free. There is no charge to view the vine.

In 2008, a domestic violence situation that ended tragically in murder, spurred retired law enforcement officer Kim Plater to take action. Plater and another woman founded the Covina Woman’s Club Domestic Violence Action Coalition (DVAC). According to Plater, “The coalition formed to ensure the criminal justice system take responsibility for its actions and to confirm that what happened to murder victim Monica Thomas would not happen again.”

Domestic violence includes not only physical abuse but also mental or emotional abuse of a family member or intimate partner.

Plater will speak at the Monday, November 8 meeting of the Arcadia Branch of the American Association of University Women (AAUW). The group meets at Church of the Good Shepherd’s Jordan Hall, 400 W. Duarte Rd., Arcadia (southwest corner of Duarte

Road and Holly Avenue).

Socializing begins at 6:30 p.m. with program to follow at 7 p.m. The public is invited to the meeting at no charge, and ample parking is available.

Plater is eminently qualified to speak on the subject of domestic violence. She served as a police officer for Baldwin Park, a sergeant at Covina Police Department, and Chief of Police at Cal Poly Pomona. Plater is frequently in demand to speak on the Domestic Violence Action Coalition, which now has over 120 members from organizations nationwide. A question and answer period will follow the presentation.
