2017 Gratitude Report Empowering Houston’s Homeless

MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR

In an ordinary year, The Beacon betters thousands of lives as we pursue our mission of “Providing essential and next-step services to restore hope and help end homelessness in Houston.” In an ordinary year, hundreds of volunteers contribute their time and energy in The Beacon Day Center, while dozens of community partners and individuals support The Beacon’s work financially. In an ordinary year, innumerable points of contact are made within our walls—person-to-person, eyeto-eye, heart-to-heart—which validate and affirm The Beacon’s work as indispensable both as a crucial component in the effort to end chronic homelessness in Houston and as a ministry that nurtures our human connections to one another. All of these things occur in an ordinary year, but 2017 was anything but ordinary! On Saturday afternoon, August 26, the rain began in Houston after Hurricane Harvey crashed into the Texas coast the day before. By the time Harvey left our region five days later, Houston had experienced more than fifty-one inches of rain, breaking every U.S. record. The Beacon lost

power for six days, making it impossible for us to function fully and ruining everything in our walk-in refrigerator. These setbacks might have paralyzed some organizations, but the board, staff, and volunteers of The Beacon acted with the passion and dedication you’d expect. The City of Houston and the Coalition for the Homeless reached out to The Beacon, asking us temporarily to expand our services. Between Monday, September 4, and Friday, September 15, The Beacon Day Center increased its normal operating hours by 120%. Staff staggered their schedules, and a corps of returning and brand new volunteers stepped forward to help carry out the extra work. During this twelve day period, the Day Center served three meals per day instead of the usual one meal per day. A total of 2,670 meals were prepared and served, an increase of 23% from our norm. We also distributed three hundred pairs of new tennis shoes to clients whose shoes had been waterlogged by the storm, thanks to a generous donation from South Main Baptist Church. The Beacon’s response to Hurricane Harvey may have been our finest moment to date. I am exceedingly proud of our staff and volunteers, and I am deeply grateful for your continued support. Grace and peace,

The Way Home is a collaborative model to prevent and end homelessness in Houston, Pasadena, Conroe, Harris, Fort Bend, and Montgomery Counties. The Beacon has been a vital partner in The Way Home efforts since 2014.

The Very Reverend Barkley Thompson Board Chair

New Look, Same Mission

CEO MESSAGE

Providing essential and next-step service to restore hope and help end homelessness in Houston.

It is in the shelter of each other that the people live.

–Irish Proverb

The Beacon is pleased to share its new logo conveying the organization’s holistic approach to serving Houston’s homeless.

Seeking to demonstrate the full breadth of its services, The Beacon embarked on a discovery process to help us better define our graphic identity. Common themes emerged from talking with key stakeholders that guided the development of a new logo. The Beacon is viewed as reliable, considerate, down-to-earth, and progressive. Moreover, we have a powerful reputation for being a light of hope for the thousands of homeless men and women who access our services. We provide hope for new beginnings, hope for a life off the streets, and hope for a safe, stable place to live. We wish to thank Chris Kuhlman (ckpro.com) and Alese Pickering (alesepickering.com) for combining their amazing talents in photography and graphic design to make this Gratitude Report possible.

This proverb rang true for the Greater Houston area, rallying post Hurricane Harvey to recover and keep our fellow community members safe. Guided by our board, staff, and volunteers, The Beacon also huddled and responded quickly to offer disaster relief for the homeless men and women of Houston post Harvey. Simultaneously, our regular work to end homelessness as a partner within The Way Home collaborative continued and we had a big goal to meet. In early 2017, Mayor Turner’s Office of Homeless Initiatives launched a plan to house 500 chronically homeless individuals prior to year’s end. The Beacon was a key partner in this effort, offering our expertise of engaging individuals by meeting their basic needs with hot meals, access to showers, and laundry services. These offerings serve as touch points to develop relationships and connect folks to housing and next-step services such as civil legal aid, access to disability benefits, case management, and transitional housing as well as other services provided via

our building partners. For those experiencing chronic homelessness, recovering from a life on the streets is extremely challenging; the trauma of surviving months or often years on the streets is very real. These individuals often face multiple barriers to housing stability including mental illness, physical disabilities, substance abuse disorders, or other medical conditions. These conditions make folks especially vulnerable to the harsh existence of living on the streets. By the end of October, the community wide goal of housing 500 chronically homeless individuals was met and exceeded. The Beacon was awarded a proclamation from Mayor Sylvester Turner, recognizing our role in providing safe, stable housing to more than 700 chronically homeless men and women by the end of the initiative. I am thankful to the thousands of supporters, volunteers, and staff for propelling us to meet our goals and work toward our mission to reduce homelessness in Houston. I am so proud and honored to be a part of The Beacon team and will strive to further that mission in 2018.

New Beginnings Start Here A corporate downsize left Ms. Hall unemployed and without a safety net for her future and her family. Thankfully, she was able to move her daughters to live with friends so they could continue school, but she became homeless – sleeping in her car for weeks. With aspirations of higher education, she overcame many obstacles to get where she is today. After dialing 211 for help, she was directed to The Beacon where she was connected to a Rapid Re-housing Case Manager. After determining her eligibility for the program, she was placed in safe, stable housing and continued working on her dream to earn a degree. Last December, Mrs. Hall graduated from the University of Houston with a bachelor’s degree in accounting and is taking additional computer classes to begin her new career. She is grateful for the many individuals and supporters who helped her along the way, but especially The Beacon, where it all began.

Letter from the Board President Those of us who work closely with The Beacon are always grateful to see the outpouring of support we receive from you, our donors. A shining example of this is at our annual Come to the Table dinner each September. This event is so special because it takes place in the very space where hundreds of Houston’s homeless are served in our Day Center. Last year marked the seventh year for the event and it was our most successful to date, raising more than $620,000 in support of our mission! With Hurricane Harvey barely in our rearview mirror, our restaurant and chef partners stayed committed to the event and the room was sold out with more than 380 guests in attendance. It is really a topnotch event! The importance of the funds raised cannot be overstated. Because of this success, The Beacon was able to meet its mission of providing essential and next-step services to restore hope and help end homelessness in Houston. This would just not be possible without a successful Come to the Table event. To those of you who attended Come to the Table, please consider coming back! This year, bring a friend. Telling the story of The Beacon is a highlight of the evening and we want to share it with as many as people as possible. Thank you so very much for all that you do for The Beacon and I hope to see you at this year’s event on Thursday, September 20th!

Thank you!
