Here's the fun:

Use the grater to make crayon shavings from the peeled crayons. Sort them into piles by color and shade. Lay a large sheet of waxed paper, waxed side up, on a small stack of newspaper on an ironing board. Sprinkle the shavings evenly over the waxed paper, mixing or separating colors. The colors will seem to fall into their own delicate pattern. Set a second sheet of waxed paper,

Every year, my small vegetable garden produces far more tomatoes than I can possibly use. As the season wanes, an abundance of green tomatoes forlornly hang on the vine looking for enough sun to turn them into red jewels. I’ve begun searching for unique ways to use green tomatoes as a vegetable and as a fruit in my recipes. Scientifically, tomatoes are classified as a fruit, but since they don’t contain the sweet flavor of most fruits and are typically used in savory dishes, they’re legally classified as a vegetable. Tomatoes are low in calories and a good source of vitamins C, A and K. They also are a very good source of molybdenum, potassium, manganese, dietary fiber, chromium and vitamin

GREEN TOMATO AND ORANGE RELISH 4 medium green tomatoes 1 large purple or Vidalia onion 1 cup orange marmalade 2 cups dark brown sugar 1/2 cup apple cider vinegar 1/8 teaspoon red pepper flakes 1. Core the bottom of the green tomatoes and cut them into quarters. Peel the onion and cut it into quarters. Using a food processor, pulse the green tomato and onion 8 to 10 times, until the pieces become small (“pickle-relishâ€? size). Do not puree. 2. Using a 4- quart, heavy-bottomed pot, put in all the ingredients at once. Cook over low heat for 15 minutes, stirring until blended and the sugar begins to dissolve. 3. Turn the heat to medium and cook for 30 to 40 minutes, stirring occasionally. The relish should be syrupy and slightly thick. If it does not seem to have thickened enough, cook the relish 10 minutes more. 4. Cool for 2 hours, and then put the relish in an air-tight container and refrigerate it. The relish can be refrigerated for two weeks. You also can place the cooled relish into plastic ziplock storage bags and freeze for up to 6 months. Makes 5 cups of relish. cup vegetable oil eggs tablespoons light brown sugar 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour 1 teaspoon vanilla 1 cup pecans or walnuts, chopped 1 cup raisins (or dried cranberries, craisins or currants) 1½ cups diced green tomatoes 1 large, peeled and diced, Granny Smith apple (about 3/4 to 1 cup) 3/4 cup powdered sugar 1 cup sweetened coconut, toasted, optional Whipped cream, optional 1. Heat oven to 350 F. 2. In mixing bowl, lightly beat the water, vegetable oil, eggs and brown sugar until combined, about 2 minutes. Stir in the spice cake mix and flour, and mix until smooth. Stir in the vanilla, pecans or walnuts, raisins, tomatoes and apples. Blend well. 3. Spoon the batter into a greased and floured 9-by-13-inch baking pan. Bake for 45 to 55 minutes, or until a wooden pick or cake tester inserted in center comes out clean. Loosen the cake from the sides of the pan with a knife or spatula. Cool for 30 minutes. 4. Using a fine-mesh strainer or a sifter, sprinkle the top with powdered sugar. How to navigate traffic jams

Many drivers have found themselves traveling down the highway at a good speed when, seemingly out of nowhere, vehicles begin to slow down. In such instances, drivers assume there must be an accident ahead, only to ultimately see nothing before traffic once again begins to move. What just happened? If this situation sounds familiar, it may be comforting to know you are not alone. Traffic is a big problem in many cities, and is one of the leading causes of commuter anxiety. A 2012 study from researchers at Washington University in St. Louis noted that long commutes cut into exercise time, which has the trickle-down effect of high blood pressure, greater body weight and lower fitness levels. The study also stated that being exposed to the daily hassle of traffic can lead to chronic stress. Furthermore, traffic can expose drivers to air pollution, which the World Health Organization says contributes to 3.2 million preventable deaths worldwide each year. Traffic jams occur because of accidents, distractions on the side of the road, vehicle breakdowns, roads in disrepair, and other obstacles. But “phantom accidents� also contribute to their share of slow downs. According to Berthold Horn, an MIT computer scientist, all it takes is one driver to create a traffic jam. It is similar to the ripples of tossing a stone into a lake, and the science of nonlinear dynamics refers to this as “emergent phenomenon.� But Horn notes there may be a way to prevent phantom accidents. Horn says trying to maintain a distance halfway between the car ahead and the car behind you can

ease traffic somewhat and produce improvements in commuting time, though everyone on the road needs to do his part for this to work. Other ways to reduce traffic revolve around being a more observant and considerate driver. • Avoid being a rubbernecker, looking at things on the side of the road for too long. • Pay attention to cars entering the roadway and give them the space they need to flow into traffic effectively. • If you’re entering a roadway, get to highway speed as soon as possible. • Be an observant driver to avoid collisions or near-misses. • Do not cut off other drivers, which can

lead to road rage or tailgating. • Maintain a safe speed while driving and avoid reckless maneuvers. • Service your car on a schedule so it is less prone to breakdowns. • Check a GPS or map app on your mobile phone to see which roads have the most congestion, and consider taking an alternate route. Each of these suggestions can help reduce, but not always prevent, traffic. Accepting that traffic can occur, leaving extra time to reach destinations, having relaxing or your favorite music at the ready, and realizing that the traffic wave will end eventually can help motorists cope with traffic.

Mary Lora “Sylvia” (Sullivan) Thompson

Mary Lora “Sylvia” S. Thompson, 89, passed away on September 7, 2020, surrounded by her loving family. Sylvia was formerly married to the late Dr. William Richard Thompson of Warwick, R.I. In recent years Sylvia resided with her daughter Kathryn Angela Thompson and her partner Linda Kowalski in Valparaiso, Indiana, where she adored watching the deer and other wildlife of her adopted home. A lifetime football fan, Sylvia picked up a taste for fantasy football in her last years, and quickly became an aficionado. Sylvia is survived by her five children, Mary, John, Kathryn, Norma and William Thompson; seven grandchildren, Jesse, Maegan, Kaila and Kiera Schedeen; and Madeleine and Gary Thompson and Kristen Kim; and six great-grandchildren. She was born in Pawtucket, RI, to Elizabeth Stanton O’Neil and George Wilmer Sullivan, who raised nine children, eventually settling in West Springfield, Massachusetts. Four of Sylvia’s siblings survive her: Constance Cain, and Richard, Roger, and Thomas Sullivan. Sylvia was the seventh of nine children; she attributed much of her feisty spirit and athletic prowess to the fact that she had to contend with six brothers of close age. When she raised her own family in Warwick, RI, she passed on her love of sports to her children and devoted herself tirelessly to transporting

them to lessons, swim meets, and tennis tournaments throughout New England. She volunteered for numerous organizations, and became the first female Chair of the Board of the Providence YMCA. When Sylvia was not busy encouraging activities among her children, she pursued her own passion of playing bridge. Her children quickly learned that the perfect time to ask for ice cream money was when Mom was bidding no trump, whatever that meant. She was a superb player of duplicate bridge, and achieved the status of Gold Life Master. This talent carried over in other fields as well, as she was the go-to person in the household for accounting or math questions, solving puzzles, winning at Scrabble and assembling furniture or toys. Each December when her family was young, she would knit Fisherman sweaters for the entire family of cousins who were the beneficiaries of the Christmas swap that year; her own children became accustomed to hand-knit sweaters, scarves and hats that seemed to appear magically every season. “Mrs. Thompson” was famous at Cedar Hill School for all the holiday boxes of beautiful design that she contributed year after year. Sylvia was a very social animal who loved travelling, from beachcombing in Sanibel Island, to her Irish “homeland,” to more intrepid travel in the Far East. She was a frequent visitor to Foxwoods Casino when she lived in Rhode Island, and then to Four Winds in Michigan. She had a quick wit and was known to be ready with an offcolor joke to share even with the priest before Mass. She lifted everyone’s spirit and will be sorely missed. A private memorial service is being planned and memorial donations may be made to Dunes Hospice (www. duneshospicellc.com).

What to do to prepare your garden for winter Gardens provide an idyllic escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. In fact, many gardening enthusiasts typically cannot wait for the spring thaw so they can spend the next several months tending to their plants under the warm sun. But a gardener’s work is never truly done, and the work to make gardens stun in the spring actually begins during the preceding fall. Preparing gardens for winter is an important step that can help homeowners ensure their gardens return to full strength in the spring. The tasks necessary to prepare gardens for winter may depend on what homeowners are planting, but the following are some general maintenance suggestions that can keep gardens safe this winter. • Remove weeds and debris. Weeds and debris are unsightly and detrimental to plant life in spring, but they also can be harmful in the winter. Weeds and debris left to linger in gardens through the winter provide overwintering spots for insects and can contribute to disease. So it’s imperative that weeds and debris are removed before the ground hardens in winter. Don’t wait until the ground hardens, as that can make it hard to remove the roots of weeds, adversely affecting the garden as a result. • Prepare the soil. The Farmer’s Almanac advises homeowners to gently till the soil in their gardens so they can expose any insects before they settle in for the winter. Once garden soil is exposed, add a layer of compost, leaves, aged manure, and, if necessary, lime, gently tilling it into the soil. According to the North Carolina Cooperative Extension, the only accurate way to determine if lawn or garden soil needs lime is to test it. Lime makes soil less acidic and reduces soil pH. Low soil pH makes it hard for certain plants to grow, but acidic soil is ideal when growing blueberries. Test the soil for lime and amend it depending on what you hope to grow in the spring so it’s ready to thrive when winter ends. • Remove dead or diseased plants. Dead or diseased plants should not be left in the garden through the winter. These plants can attract insects and are vulnerable to disease, which can make it hard for the garden to thrive in the spring. • Protect fruit trees. If you have fruit trees, install mouse guards around the base to prevent mice and voles from killing the trees over the winter. If left to their own devices over the winter, mice and voles may eat the bark of fruit trees, killing the trees as a result. The Farmer’s Almanac notes that mouse guards made of fine mesh hardware cloth can effectively protect fruit trees from hungry mice and voles over the winter. A gardener’s work is never done, and the work to create beautiful spring gardens begins in the fall. METRO

This ivory pie crimper was made in the 1800s by a sailor and sold at an Eldred’s auction recently for $3,600. It is a piece of folk art with several suggested explanations of the design.

In the 1950s when we started writing about antiques, the identification of unfamiliar objects was based on old letters, ads, family stories and guesses. Today, most of the conclusions are considered myths. Sailors had time to carve many small ivory objects, often as gifts. Parts of the human body were considered erotic, and at various times the ankle, leg, neck, bust, buttocks, long hair or even total nudity were fea-

tured in paintings and pictures to set a risque mood. But today the story of the ankle or the leg is considered a myth. Women usually wore boots, long stockings and long skirts for comfort and the leg was rarely visible. So, the pie crimper was a gift of love, but probably nothing more serious. *** My father owned a butcher shop and grocery store in the 1940s and ‘50s. I have several tins that held coffee, cookies, pretzels, lard and spices that came from the store. Are they worth anything? The first tin cans were made in the early 1800s. The type of can we use today, with a crimped top and soldered side seam, was first made in 1898. Some collectors of advertising items collect tins. Some specialize in tins for a single product, like coffee, tobacco, beer or oil. Tins with modern graphics and streamlined pictures indicate that they are no older than the 1940s. Collectors want older tins and tins for products that are no longer being produced. Tins with interesting graphics usually sell for more than those with just words. Common causes of house fires According to the Consumer Products Safety Commission, roughly 25,000 home fires causing more than 300 deaths occur in the United States each year. Homeowners can keep themselves and their families safe by being aware of the dangers around a home that can contribute to house fires and the preventive measures that can reduce the risk for such fires. According to the National Fire Protection Association, the following are the most common factors that can lead to fires around the house. • Cooking accidents: It can take mere seconds for grease splatters or an overheated pan or pot to cause a fire. Stay in the kitchen at all times when cooking. • Heaters: Have furnaces and other heating appliances regularly inspected. Keep portable heaters away from anything that can burn, including curtains and furniture. Do not leave portable heaters running while you

are sleeping or out of the home. • Smoking: Smoking inside a home can lead to fires. Some people forget to extinguish the smoke or embers may fall, while butts may smoulder for hours before causing flames to form. • Washers and dryers: Between 2010 and 2014, American fire departments responded to an estimated 15,970 home fires involving clothes dryers or washing machines each year. Mechanical or electrical failure or malfunction was involved in the vast majority of home fires involving washing machines. Failure to clean dryers also can cause fires to ignite. • Candles: Candles can add ambiance to a room and are commonly used in decorations, but they also can be a fire hazard. Candles easily can be knocked over by children, pets and others. Do not leave candles lit and unattended.
