Taking a Tetanus Vaccine With an Allergy Requires Careful Monitoring DEAR DR. ROACH: I was told by my doctor that I need a tetanus booster shot, but when I was 17, I cut my foot and needed stitches. I was told then that I was allergic to the tetanus shot, so they gave me penicillin instead. Of course, that was a long time ago, since I’m now 81 years old. How could they have determined I was allergic to the shot, and is that even reliable? Can I be tested now? Or do I even need to be tested? — M.N. ANSWER: Reactions to vaccines are common, but they were much more common 64 years ago, when the purity of vaccines was far less than what it is now. One reaction that was common in the 1950s is called an Arthus reaction, which causes painful swelling at the injection site within a few hours — the worst swelling usually occuring around 24 hours later, and then slowly decreasing. You are unlikely to get that type of allergic reaction because of better vaccines, and because it has been so many years since you’ve taken the vaccine.

Very few people get anaphylactic reactions. Anaphylaxis is a lifethreatening condition, which often starts with skin symptoms such as hives or swelling; respiratory symptoms such as nasal congestion, discharge or the sensation of the throat closing; gastrointestinal symptoms such as nausea, vomiting or abdominal pain; and cardiovascular symptoms such as dizziness and fainting.

Any history of anaphylaxis prevents you from getting the same trigger (vaccine or medication) again, if it can be helped. Only a careful history

of your symptoms at the time of the allergic reaction you had can provide an answer on which type of reaction it was. Blood testing for allergic reactions is not 100% reliable.

If you haven’t had a tetanus vaccine in over 60 years, the decision to get one now really is a judgment call based on your likelihood of exposures. If you do a lot of gardening or hiking, it may be worthwhile to give you a vaccine with careful monitoring. If you were to develop a tetanus-prone wound, such as a deep wound that comes into contact with soil or manure, you would be recommended tetanus immunoglobulin as well as a tetanus vaccine. Penicillin alone is not effective in preventing tetanus: Meticulous wound cleaning is critical, in addition to the shots. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: How do I know if I’ve been vaccinated for polio? — S.A. ANSWER: The first U.S.-transmitted case of polio in a decade was reported in Rockland County, New York, in July 2022. The person who contracted polio was unvaccinated: They probably contracted the case from a person who was vaccinated outside the U.S., since it was a vaccine-derived polio case. Occasionally, the weakened strain used for the oral polio vaccine can mutate and cause disease. The oral polio vaccine has not been used in the U.S. since 2000, but it is still used in other parts of the world.

The vast majority of American and Canadian adults are vaccinated for polio, as it is required for school. So, most adults do not need vaccination, but it is routine for those traveling to endemic areas to receive a booster. Unfortunately, many children have not gotten their boosters on time due to the pandemic, and parents in the area of the case are recommended to get their kids’ vaccines up-to-date as soon as possible. Anyone exposed to a known case should get guidance from their physician, who will probably be in contact with the health department.

Helping a “Found” Cat Get Home DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My friend found an orange cat matching the description on a paper flyer posted on a nearby telephone pole.

However, the email address listed on the flyer keeps coming back as “invalid,” so she has no way to contact the owner. What else can she do to return the cat to its rightful owner? — Jimmy V., via email DEAR JIMMY: Kudos to you and your friend for caring for the lost cat and trying to get it back to the owner!

The first thing to do is to contact nearby shelters and veterinarian’s offices and tell them that you’ve found a lost cat but cannot contact the owner.

They may have you bring in the cat to scan for a microchip — the best way to identify pets and reunite them with their owners when a collar and tag are lost. Or they may ask for a description and have you email a photo of the cat so they can put up a “found” flyer in their lobby. Chances are, if the owner has already put up flyers, they have probably been checking with shelters regularly to see if their cat has been reported found or has turned up there.

Next, get the word out. Paws.org has a downloadable PDF flyer (www. paws.org/resources/reunite-a-foundpet/) that you can use to post your own found sign and add a contact email or number for the owner to call. Post a found notice on Facebook groups like Lost and Pound (www.facebook.com/ lostandpound), which focus on lost pets.

Chances are, you’ll locate the owner locally, but getting the word out as far and as wide as possible will help reunite that cat with its owner.

In recent years, many a motorist has noticed how much more glare they encounter on the road at night than they used to. The headlights that are now standard in many vehicles can be a catch-22. Drivers of vehicles equipped with LED lights often find the road in front of them is much more illuminated thant it was in the days when auto manufacturers built cars and trucks with incandescent lights. However, the bright light emitted by LED headlights can increase glare for oncoming motorists, making the roads more dangerous for all.

Headlight glare has long been a problem for many drivers. In fact, as far back as 2001 the Highway Traffic and Safety Administration sought input from the public regarding headlight glare.

A subsequent report noted that the issue compelled more responses than any other safety concern, and it’s likely that a similar request would generate an even greater response today.

LED lights might be a problem for millions of motorists, but the efficiency and longevity of these lights makes it unlikely that auto manufacturers will shift to an alternative light source anytime soon. Until that time comes, drivers can try these strategies to combat glare when driving at night.

• Avoid looking directly at oncoming headlights. It’s important that drivers keep their

eyes on the road at all times, but they should be able to do so without staring directly at oncoming lights. In North America, where oncoming traffic is always on the left, drivers can slightly shift their focus to the right as lights are oncoming. Doing so should allow them to keep their eyes on the road without staring directly into oncoming lights.

• Purchase night driving glasses. Drivers can consider night driving glasses if they’re having a lot of trouble with glare. Such glasses differ depending on the manufacturer, but they’re generally intended to reduce glare and reflections from headlights and street lamps.

• Investigate wiper blades. Glare from oncoming headlights contribute to visibility problems when driving at night, and old wiper blades can exacerbate those problems. Old wiper blades can be compromised by a buildup of dirt and often wear down over time. When coupled with glare, this can significantly reduce visibility at night. Each manufacturer is different, but Ford recommends replacing wiper blades once every 12 months. In • Clean the interior of your windshield.

A dirty windshield interior also can exacerbate glare. Grit and dirt build up inside of a vehicle over time, and they can accumulate on the wind-

shield just as easily as they do in a cup holder, on an armrest or on the dashboard. Various products are designed specifically for cleaning interior windshields, and these could help reduce glare at night.

Glare can make nighttime driving very difficult. Fortunately, drivers can take many steps to reduce glare from oncoming headlights.

A recipe is like a roadmap that tells us exactly what we need to do to help us get to where we want to go. Of course, if you don’t follow the recipe and perhaps leave out one of the more important ingredients-- you know what happens: You taste it and perhaps say or think, gee, this doesn’t taste the same as when mom made it. Can you relate?

I am certain each of us has a family recipe that has been passed down or around the family, perhaps for generations. My favorite is my mom’s bread stuffing which I make for every Thanksgiving dinner. I can’t wait to taste it again!

When it comes to retirement, there is no one way to structure or plan for your retirement. The recipe that is great for you may not work at all for another family member, your best friend, or your neighbors. The goal with retirement planning is to work the “recipe” for your specific situation to achieve the retirement lifestyle that is a good fit for you and your spouse if you are married.

So, what are the main ingredients that I think should really be considered for every retirement plan? Yes, I first said that everyone’s recipe is likely to be different, however, there are certain elements that I think should be included

in every retirement plan. The three specific elements are: safety, liquidity and growth for the future. Within those three elements is where the plan can be dramatically different for each person or couple.

Everyone has a different perspective when it comes to their risk tolerance (taking on more risk or preferring to take on less risk.) By properly implementing a plan that contains these three elements, you are designing strategies to help you pursue your particular goals and objectives for a successful retirement. The major difference from one person’s plan to another is the amount of money that you put into each of these three asset positions. The challenge with putting money into these three elements is that you cannot achieve all three--safety, liquidity and growth--with a single asset placement. However, you can typically get two out of three of these important elements.

Let’s start with this comment: every choice you make as to where you should place your assets will have both pros and cons. It’s up to you to weigh each choice with the pros and cons and decide which is most comfortable for you.

In the safety category, your choices are bank or credit union money, backed up by the FDIC or NCUA, and insurance products that are backed by the financial strength and claims paying ability of the issuing insurance company. There are insurance-based products that offer the possibility to earn much higher rates of return than the bank, credit

union or government securities. Some of these options may have liquidity as well. There are important details to consider when this type of option is recommended to you, so work with a professional advisor that will help explain all the details.

Another option is US government securities like treasure bills, notes, and bonds that are backed by the full faith and credit of the United States government. In this category, you will get safety and a certain amount of liquidity, which is the second category, but typically, you may not get much growth.

Therefore, although the safety category is important to a retire-ready recipe, you will not have much in the way of growth at the current rates of interest, which have only recently started to go up as the Federal Reserve has raised their interest rates.

In the liquidity category, you should have your emergency money along with money for expected larger expenses such as a roof, new car, etc. There is a cost for liquidity, which is that you will not make much money on your deposit.

We refer to this money as your “pillow” money so when your head hits the pillow at night, you will be confident in your plan and enjoy a good night’s sleep by not worrying about access to money.

Moving on to category number three - growth. This is a very important element to have in your plan. Typically, these are your investments in the stock market. I will concede that you can also invest in bonds, however, the challenge

with bonds is that their fair market value (the amount you can sell the bond for) will go down as interest rates rise.

As the Fed has started to aggressively raise interest rates, this has a negative effect on the value of your bonds if you were to sell them. The bond aggregate index, according to the Yahoo Finance web site, was down as much as 16% earlier this year, and as of September 22nd, it is down approximately 11%. Of course, you may also have liquidity in your savings or money market accounts. As I mentioned earlier, you can usually get two elements, but not all three.

So, there you have it! A Retire-Ready Recipe that includes three main ingredients: safety, liquidity and growth. This is how we customize a retire-ready plan for our clients.

Saving strategies for young adults

Expanded Help for Veteran Caregivers The Department of Veterans Affairs is giving a helping hand to veteran caregivers of all eras. The Program of Comprehensive Assistance for Family Caregivers (PCAFC) has been expanded to include eligible veterans who served after May 7, 1975, and before Sept. 11, 2001.

At-home caregivers have been the glue that held together any number of veteran programs, and now more of them will get the assistance they need.

The program assists caregivers with health insurance and access to health care through CHAMPVA, peer support, respite care (30 days per year), education and training, financial assistance and monthly stipend, certain travel expenses, resources and more.

The program includes both primary and secondary (backup) caregivers, although there are different services for secondary.

At the same time, the VA is extending the length of time that Legacy participants, veterans and their caregivers can stay eligible for the program.

This date now runs through Sept. 30, 2025. “Legacy” means that a veteran was designed as eligible before Oct. 1, 2020.

Eligible veterans include those who had a serious injury or a serious illness during active duty during any service era. The veteran must have a disability rating of 70% or higher, have been discharged or have a medical discharge and need at least six months of personal care services for assistance such as feeding, supervision, safety and bathing.

To learn more about the Caregiver Support Program, call them at 855260-3274 on Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. EST, and on Saturday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. EST. When a person is young, saving money may be the furthest thing from his or her mind. Some can be linked directly to a credit or debit card to have passive income deposited directly. With others, you can cash out as a direct deposit or via a payment app like PayPal. Set aside one-third of your income Make it a point to put away $1 for every $3 earned into a savings account, advises U.S. News & World Report. That is a good measure for establishing a rainy day fund. If you don’t trust yourself to transfer the money, have a set amount automatically deposited from your paycheck into a designated savings account.

Treat credit cards like using cash The “buy now, pay later” option is an attractive trap to fall into. Using credit cards often is a safer way to pay mer-

chants, because you’re risking others’ money rather than your own with a debit card. However, using credit can make it challenging to visualize what you’re actually spending. Do not purchase more than you can pay off within each billing cycle. Set account alerts

on your phone to let you know when you’ve hit your budgeted credit card spending limit.

Resist the urge to open and use too many cards.

According to the real estate research firm CoreLogic, annual home price growth during the pandemic was the most the group had ever seen in its 45 years of tracking home prices.

Since the World Health Organization first declared a pandemic in March of 2020, home prices have risen dramatically. CoreLogic reports that median home prices across the United States increased by 18 percent between July 2020 and July 2021. The increase was even more significant in Canada, where data from the Canadian Real Estate Associa-

tion indicated home prices had risen by more than 38 percent between 2020 and 2021. Such increases were welcome news for individuals who already owned their homes, but many individuals who did not found themselves priced out of the market.

The good news for potential home buyers is that median home prices are not expected to increase as much in 2022 as they have since the onset of the pandemic. In fact, CoreLogic forecasted a 2.7 percent appreciation between July 2021 and July 2022.

Mysterious Figure Sometimes inventions have changed how we perform a job. They make a certain tool or decoration no longer useful, and its earlier use is forgotten.

A 5-inch-tall bisque vase shaped like a man in a political uniform was one of these mysteries in a recent auction.

It could hold small flowers for a very short time, because the small opening would hold only enough water for flowers for a day.

We have seen similar small figures identified as match holders, but it could be a “whimsey” (a fanciful figure, perhaps even a joke). We were sure it was old, and we thought the figure was a caricature of a known English politician. The style of pants, short shirt, yellow epaulets, curly hairdo and flat hat seemed proper. Whatever it was used for, it was appealing, and with eight bids, it sold for $59 at the Conestoga auction in Pennsylvania. The value will go up if the man can be identified. *** What is a 100-year-old Hohner Professional model chromatic octave harmonica worth?

It’s in a red case that has “Made in Germany” printed on it.

The first harmonicas were made by hand in the 1820s. Matthias Hohner, a watchmaker in Trossingen, Germany, used machines to mass produce harmonicas. He founded his company in 1857. The company is best known for its harmonicas and accordions, but it also made other musical instruments. By 1930 it was the world’s biggest musical instrument maker. Hohner began making chromatic harmonicas in 1912. Depressing the button on the side of the harmonica changes the notes a half step, making it possible to play a chromatic scale.

Hohner became part of KHS, a Taiwan musical instrument company, in 1987. Hohner has made over a billion harmonicas. Most aren’t worth much, less than $50, because they are so common. If the harmonica is a model collectors want or if there is something unusual about it, it’s in perfect condition and has the original box, it might

How to confront frequent increases in costs of living Prices on the majority of goods and services have increased significantly over the last year-plus. Financial analysts report that inflation has reached heights that haven’t been seen in 41 years. According to the United States Department of Labor, the consumer price index, which measures changes in how much Americans pay for good and services, rose 0.4 percent in September.

As prices soared, families’ budgets were being pushed. What can people do in the face of rising costs on items they need, including those who may be on fixed incomes? These suggestions may help.

• Frequently review your budget.

Keep track of how much items cost right now. Document all spending by writing down a list of weekly expenses or utilizing any number of free budgeting apps available. Tracking what is going out may make it easier to cut costs on less essential items, such as streaming services or gym memberships.

• Contact service providers. If they can’t work out a deal, go with the less expensive provider. You can always switch back at the end of the term if you desire.

I’m really enjoying the new show “Fire Country.” However, I always worry that a show I invest my time in will be canceled.

How is this one doing with its ratings? — U.T. CBS recently ordered full seasons for three of its new series: “East New York,” “So Help Me Todd,” and “Fire Country,” so that should give you a vote of confidence. According to TVLine.com, the network didn’t announce specifically what constitutes a “full season” for these particular shows, but I would say it stands a very good chance of being renewed for its second season as well.

“Fire Country” stars Max Thieriot (“SEAL Team”) as a recently released prison inmate fighting brush fires out west. It had the highest-rated season premiere this fall for a network television show. It also airs on Friday nights, which is not an ideal time slot, since people not only have a lot of options for entertainment as the weekend approaches. But with more than 8 million viewers tuning in, I would call it a win for CBS. Thieriot himself has a lot invested in his new series, as he’s not just starring in it, but he also co-created the series with producer Jerry Bruckheimer.

Thieriot’s interest behind the camera began with directing an episode of “Bates Motel,” a series on A&E starring Vera Farmiga and Freddie Highmore.

Thieriot played Dylan, the half-brother of the infamous Norman Bates. He then went on to direct a couple episodes of “SEAL Team.” *** Could you give me some information on Gabe Rygaard from “Ax Men” and Darrell Ward from “Ice Road Truckers?” — S.W. Gabe Rygaard was the owner of Rygaard Logging after his father, Craig, retired at the end of season six of the reality series “Ax Men.” Sadly, Rygaard died in a car accident in 2016 in Washington, where he lived. “Ax Men” aired on the History channel for 10 seasons. Rygaard’s death occurred after filming was completed for the ninth season. After a three-year hiatus, the show returned for just one more season.

Max Thieriot (“Fire Country”) Another tragedy struck the families of the History Channel when Darrell Ward of the “Ice Road Truckers” fame died in a plane crash, also in 2016. He was piloting a single-engine Cessna on the way back from a fan event in Dallas when it crashed in Montana. Ironically, just before his death, he was set to start filming a new documentary series about plane wreckage locations. *** I think Niecy Nash is fantastic in “The Rookie.” What else has she been in? — L.P. Niecy Nash has been acting on screen since the mid-1990s, but it was her hilarious role in the ensemble comedy “Reno 911!” that put her on the map. Since then, she’s effortlessly switched from comedy to drama in memorable lead and supporting roles, including two limited series on Netflix: “When They See Us” and “Dahmer — Monster.”

Nash is no doubt thrilled to learn that ABC just renewed “The Rookie: Feds” for a total of 22 episodes this season.

The Rhode Island Department of Transportation (RIDOT) will implement two weekend closures of Pontiac Avenue at the Pontiac Bridge Interchange in Cranston over two weekends. The two closures will take place on Friday November 11 from 8 p.m. to November 14 at 6 a.m. and Friday November 18 from 8 p.m. to November 21 at 6 a.m. This work is necessary for two bridge slides at the interchange. During the bridgework, traffic will continue to flow on Route 37 using the on and off ramps.

Marked detours will be in place. Please plan to use alternate routes as delays are expected.
