O Glorious St. Therese, whom Almighty God has raised up to aid and inspire the human family, I implore your Miraculous Intercession. You are so powerful in obtaining every need of body and spirit from the Heart of God. Holy Mother Church proclaims you “Prodigy of Miracles…the greatest saint of Modern Times. ”Now I fervently beseech you to answer my petition (mention in silence here) and to carry out your promises of spending heaven doing good on earth…of letting fall from Heaven a Shower of Roses. Little Flower, give me your childlike faith, to see the Face of God in the people and experiences of my life, and to love God with full confidence. St. Therese, my Carmelite Sister, I will fulfill your plea “to be made known everywhere” and I will continue to lead others to Jesus through you. Amen. GDB

Q:
What is the TV show from a few decades ago that had supernatural elements and was set in a small Southern town? It only lasted one season. I feel like it would do really well if it had come out today instead. — C.W. My first guess would have been “Midnight, Texas,” but that premiered on NBC in 2017. It starred Francois Arnaud (“The Moodys”) and was based on a series of books by Charlaine Harris of “True Blood” fame. However, back in 1995, there was a show called “American Gothic” that better fits your timeline. It starred Gary Cole as a demonic sheriff of a small South Carolina town and Sarah Paulson as a ghost. Lucas Black played her younger brother. The series was created by Shaun Cassidy (yes, that Shaun Cassidy of the “Hardy Boys”) and was a hit with critics, but it was canceled by NBC after just one season. Incidentally, Cassidy has gone on to be quite a successful producer, having consulted on the current hit medical drama “New Amsterdam” as well as the long-running police drama “Blue Bloods.” “American Gothic” was Paulson’s first major television role, but she’s now known for being producer Ryan Murphy’s muse in his “American Horror Story” and “American Crime Story” franchises. Cole, who recently joined the cast of “NCIS,” taking over for the legendary Gibbs (Mark Harmon), told Entertainment Weekly magazine that Sheriff Buck is the role he’d most like to revisit. *** When is “This Is Us” coming back with new episodes? I heard this will be its last season. Say it isn’t so! — R.B. “This is Us,” the show everyone loves to cry to, returns for its final episodes beginning Jan. 4. It gets a head start before the 2022 Winter Olympics airs on NBC in February. The last new episode of “This Is Us” was in May, where it jumped four years ahead with a shocking wedding. Season six will consist of 18 episodes. According to the Hollywood Reporter, the show’s creator, Dan

Fogelman, has promised that there will be “no looming questions when we get through the end of next season. Everything will be resolved.” Justin Hartley, who plays Kevin on “This Is Us,” has already landed a pilot for a new series, “The Never Game” on CBS. It’s still in development, but it’s based on the novel of the same name by Jeffrey Deaver, so it looks promising. *** I was so sad to see the character of Dean written out of “Station 19” recently. Why would they get rid of him? — D.C. According to Deadline, Okieriete “Oak” Onaodowan approached producers about leaving the show as Dean Miller at the end of season four, but the parting was amicable. He simply wants to stretch his wings after five years of playing a firefighter on the Seattle-based drama. Prior to “Station 19,” Onaodowan played the dual roles of James Madison and Hercules Mulligan in the Broadway hit “Hamilton.” Send me your questions at NewCelebrityExtra@gmail.com, or write me at KFWS, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803.

SALVATION PRAYER Dear Heavenly Father, I want to be your child. I believe Jesus shed his blood and died for my sins. Jesus was buried and rose from the dead. Jesus lives eternally. I ask Jesus to be my Savior and my Lord. Please forgive my sins and direct my life. I pray in the Name of Jesus. Amen. A PRAYER TO GOD Matt 6:8-13 Our Father which art in Heaven Hallowed be thy Name. Thy Kingdom come, Thy will be done on Earth as it is in Heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors, and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil:: for thine is the Kingdom, and the power and the glory forever. Her Dog Won’t Stop Licking His Paws DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My hound dog “Charlie” licks his front paws nonstop, and sometimes his back paws, every time he lies down. He’ll lick the top of his paws and in between the pads. The skin on top of his paws is starting to get raw. I’ve checked his paws and can’t see any cuts or ticks. Why is he doing this, and how can I stop it? — Lee F., Ocala, Florida DEAR LEE: Go ahead and schedule an appointment with the veterinarian. Charlie could be licking his paws for a few reasons. One, a physical injury or infestation — which you wisely checked for first. Two, an underlying condition that is causing Charlie discomfort, like a muscle or bone injury, or arthritis. Three, a compulsion to lick his paws. The vet should do some bloodwork to rule out underlying disease. He’ll do some other tests to determine if arthritis is a factor. And he’ll check for allergies, which can cause itchy skin in dogs. Depending on what he finds (or doesn’t find), the vet will help you plan a course of action to stop the licking. It’s important to stay on top of this because dogs who keep licking or biting at the same spot can develop lick granuloma. This is a red patch of skin that is sore and itchy, and a dog’s licking just makes it worse. Eventually, it can turn into a red lump of skin. The granuloma can become infected, requiring antibiotics to resolve. And if the granuloma doesn’t heal or gets really large, it may need to be removed surgically. Work with the vet to find the cause of Charlie’s discomfort and resolve it. Treatment may take a month or more, but it will be worth it. Send your tips, questions or comments to ask@pawscorner.com. © 2021 King Features Synd., Inc.

an autobiographical tribute to the interesting people and events that shaped the life of author Ken Dooley

Beginning with his growing up in Cranston, attending public schools and being kicked out of the Boy Scouts for embezzlement (The Wallet) then spreading to Boston, Manhattan, Philadelphia, and Detroit as he encounters people like Red Auerbach, Bill Russell, Sam Jones, KC Jones, Dave Gavitt, Lee Iacocca, Katharine Hepburn, Frank Sinatra, Morley Safer and George Plimpton plus many Rhode Island luminaries.

“At age ninety, Ken Dooley, noted Rhode Island Heritage Hall of Fame playwright, author, publisher, political consultant, and raconteur decided, with a nudge from his admirers, to compose a series of brief essays recounting his varied life experiences. His observations, based on first-hand involvement, bear the appropriate title Dooley Noted. His insightful recollections are notable indeed! During his long and eventful career, Ken has encountered the famous and infamous, the literati, scholars, athletes, politicians, clergy, the military, and those who led an ordinary life, except for an extraordinary encounter with Mr. Dooley,” – Dr. Patrick T. Conley, Historian Laureate of Rhode Island.

5. Pick off a small bit from the remaining piece for the snout. Cut the rest into six even pieces. Roll all seven small pieces into balls. Place a ball on the face for the snout, two ears at the top of the head, 2 arms at the sides of the body, and 2 legs to the bottom of the body. 6. Make tiny slits in the dough and insert raisins for eyes and for a belly button. Repeat steps for second bear.
Twist, Shape and Bake Healthy Bread Bears Baking bread is just plain fun when your preschoolers shape prepared dough into adorable bear shapes. Toss in simple math along the way too, as your pint-size bakers divide the dough into halves, fourths and even sixths to form the bear's arms, legs and snout. They'll watch the dough rise before their eyes, and they'll love "painting" the bears with an egg wash before you pop them in the oven. Serve them warm, drizzled with some honey from a little pot for a memorable afternoon treat. Ingredients for two 8-inch-tall bears:
— One loaf of prepared frozen bread dough — 1 egg, beaten with 1 tablespoon of water — Raisins — Honey (optional)
Here's the fun:
1. Thaw the loaf of frozen bread dough for two 8-inch-tall bears. Use it while it is still cold. 2. Cut the loaf in half. Set one of the halves aside for a few minutes while you form the first bear. 3. Cut the dough into two even pieces, and let your child roll one of the pieces into a ball with his hands. Set it on a large, greased cookie sheet for the body. Press it down to flatten slightly. 4. Cut the other piece in half. Roll one of the halves into a ball for the head and place it above the body. You may need to pinch the two parts together.
Coventry: 3 bed, 1.5 bath raised ranch, 2 fireplaces, hardwoods, oversized 2 car garage, new roof, $290,000 Hopkinton: Build your dream home on this beautiful 4.72 acre lot on the Wood River, $225,000
Preschoolers can learn fractions while they help make these bread bears. 7. Let them rise, covered with a damp towel or plastic wrap, for about 45 minutes in a warm place until doubled in size. 8. Remove covering and brush some egg mixture on top of the bears. Bake at 350 F for 25 minutes or until golden brown. Cool on a cooling rack. TIP: Make several bears, and dress them up with thin ribbons tied around their necks. Set in a basket as treats at a teddy bear party. *** Find more family fun at www.donnaerickson.com. WHAT IS
Rheumatology?
Rheumatology is a subspecialty of medicine that focuses on the treatment of conditions due to immune system dysfunction. These are referred to as autoimmune diseases. The immune system is our body’s defense mechanism against infection. Its job is to recognize foreign invaders like bacteria and viruses and stop them from causing disease by making antibodies. In autoimmune disease the immune system wrongly identifies its own body as foreign and creates an attack against itself. This leads to the development of inflammation and damage to different areas of the body. An autoimmune condition can affect one area of the body or many areas. Autoimmune diseases can be difficult to diagnose because the symptoms can be subtle and nonspecific.
Diagnosis of autoimmune disease
Staying Healthy
The cause of rheumatologic autoimmune disease
by KELSEY RIGBY, DO, PGY-3 KENT HOSPITAL, INTERNAL MEDICINE RESIDENT
The diagnosis of an autoimmune disease includes looking at both patient symptoms and blood work. Early in the disease process it can be difficult to obtain the correct diagnosis because the symptoms are subtle and nonspecific. Many symptoms in autoimmune diseases can also be seen in other diseases as well. One of the key features that suggest a process is related to an autoimmune disorder is if symptoms are chronic, relapsing and have been occurring over 6 weeks. Lab tests look for elevated inflammatory markers in the blood as well as specific antibodies that are present in certain autoimmune diseases. It is important to correlate lab tests with symptoms. There are some people who have positive antibodies related to this disease process, but do have any underlying disease.
The reason person develops an autoimmune disease is unknown. It is likely a combination of genetic predisposition along with an external trigger, like a viral illness that leads to development of disease. Many autoimmune conditions run in families. Symptoms of autoimmune disease People with autoimmune diseases can develop a wide range of symptoms from fever to joint pain. Even individuals with the same diagnosis can be affected very differently. Symptoms can be limited to one organ or multiple organ systems. Rheumatolgic autoimmune disease are diagnosed by putting together the clinical symptoms with blood tests. There are over a hundred different autoimmune conditions. Some conditions include: - Lupus - Rheumatoid Arthritis - Polymyalgia Rheumatica - Dermatomyositis - Polymyositis - Psoriatic Arthritis - Ankylosis spondylitis - Vasculitis - Temporal Arteritis - Scleroderma - Crohn’s Disease

Treatment of autoimmune disease
Autoimmune conditions are chronic and require longterm treatment with immunosuppressive medications to keep the disease under control. Sometimes a flare up can develop and will require short acting treatment to help control symptoms. There are many different medications that can be used to treat autoimmune diseases and it can be a challenge to find the right one that works best for each patient. It is important to follow up regularly with your physician to monitor symptoms and disease activity by both lab work and physical exam.

OCEAN STATE PAINTING & PROPERTY MAINTENANCE
Interior & Exterior Painting • Home Repairs
Alex 414-9285
RI Reg #44342
By Jennifer Coates If there is one thing that professional painter Alex Carlson dislikes, it is a sloppy paint job. After having painted homes and businesses for over 12 years, its no wonder he has no patience for shoddy work! Alex Carlson is the owner of Ocean State Painting & Property Maintenance. Though his business was officially started just over two years ago, Carlson has been working with his hands since he was a young boy. He began by helping his uncle with home renovations which instilled in Alex a passion for the work. In high school, Alex’s training continued with the school’s carpentry vocational program. From there, he went on to apprentice for a cabinet and painting contractor who gave him priceless first-hand experience in the field. Today, he runs a successful business which supports his young family and gives him a sense of excitement for that the future holds. Alex’s intolerance for poor workmanship sets him apart from many of his competitors. He has always had high standards and the highest of expectations for the outcome of his work. With a keen eye for imperfections and flaws, whether it is a seam or gap that needs to be caulked, or nails that need to be set, holes that need to be filled or peeling paint that needs to be scraped and sanded before being primed, he never settles for second best. His many satisfied customers can attest to his strong work ethic. As Alex tackles the paint jobs in your home, you can

The most important work for Carlson begins with the prep work, the meticulous and detail-oriented work of preparing any surface for paint. If your house has shutters, they come down and are sanded, primed then painted. If there is peeling paint, it gets sanded down before any finishing work is done. If your house has trim or moulding that needs to be repainted, he sets all nails, fills all holes, caulks all seams, and then sands them to ensure a glass-like finish with a quality semi-gloss. No detail is left undone. When working, Alex points out that “sometimes the long way to get something done is actually the short way.” He explains that many people take short cuts or

Most holy Apostle, St. Jude, faithful servant and friend of Jesus, the church honors and invokes you universally, as the patron of hopeless cases, of things almost despaired of. Pray for me, I am so helpless and alone. Make use, I implore you, of that particular privilege given to you, to bring visible and speedy help where help is almost despaired of. Come to my assistance in this great need that I may receive the consolation and help of heaven in all my necessities, tribulations, and sufferings, particularly (your request) and that I may praise God with you and all the elect forever. I promise, O blessed St. Jude, to be ever mindful of this great favor, to always honor you as my special and powerful patron, and to gratefully encourage devotion to you. Amen. AP

King Features Weekly Service
HOLLYWOOD — Ryan Gosling began his career on “The Mickey Mouse Club,” but we’d never have expected him to play “Ken” to the sexy Margot Robbie’s “Barbie.” Now that Disney owns Mattel, he’ll be back in the “club.” His last film, “First Man” (2018), barely broke even, but he’s since filmed Netflix’s most-costly film ever, the action thriller (with a $200 million price tag) “Gray Man,” co-starring Chris Evans, Ana De Armas and Billy Bob Thornton. Will Ken’s missing equipment be restored for the Disney movie, or will Barbie dump him again? *** Margot Robbie is still one of the busiest actresses in films. She stars in the still-untitled David O. Russell film with a magnificent cast, including Christian Bale, Rami Malek, Robert De Niro, John David Washington, Zoe Saldana, Mike Meyers, Michael Shannon and Chris Rock. She also toplines “Babylon,” as silent-film legend Clara Bow, co-starring Brad Pitt, Toby Maguire and Jean Smart (due Christmas 2022), and she’s in the all-star ensemble of Wes Anderson’s latest, “Asteroid City,” with Tilda Swinton, Bill Murray, Adrien Brody, Tom Hanks, Scarlett Johansson, Bryan Cranston and Jeff Goldblum. Anderson’s recent release, “The French Dispatch” (made two years ago and pulled from theaters), got positive reviews from 74% of respondents on Rotten Tomatoes. *** The current release of “Dune” was successful enough to get the green light to start pre-production on the sequel, “Dune: Part Two.” The original David Lynch “Dune” (1984) tried to tell the entire story in one film, but making it a huge two-part screen epic seems to have worked for this one. It grossed $41 million in its first weekend and pulled in nearly 2 million viewers on HBO Max at the same time.

Margot Robbie Sure as shooting, the upcoming film “My Son Hunter” won’t be favorable to either President Joe Biden or his son Hunter. Robert Davi — who acted in “Showgirls” (1995) and “Predator 2” (1990), to name two of his more than 100 films — has cast John James (Jeff Colby on “Dynasty”) to play President Biden, while British actor Laurence Fox (son of James Fox) plays his son Hunter. The film purports to be about sex, power, drugs, money and alcohol, based on claims the anti-Biden media has been pushing since before the election. They raised the money to make the film from a GoFundMe campaign, since it was unlikely any legitimate film studio or production company would make it. Even more suspicious is that they’re shooting the film in Serbia. Seems logical when you remember Serbia was up to its eyeballs in the non-existent scandal they were only too happy to perpetuate. Is this film destined to be R-rated for, uhh, political reasons? © 2021 King Features Synd., Inc.

Calder Tapestry
King Features Weekly Service
November 22, 2021
Alexander Calder (1898-1976) is best known for his sculpture mobiles, although he also did paintings, jewelry and large outdoor statues. He was the first artist to make a new type of statue of wire and metal that was assembled so it moved with each gust of wind. His creations sell for thousands of dollars, but at one time, you could have bought a small rug designed by Calder for much less. In 1972, there was an earthquake in Nicaragua and Guatemala that killed hundreds of people. A group of artists formed a relief fund, and each artist contributed art made in a limited edition of 100. The art was sold, and the money used for the earthquake victims. Calder drew 14 designs for a rug or tapestry and a limited edition of each was made by weavers in Guatemala from local fibers. He adjusted the pattern to use the beige maguey fiber and local weaving styles. Many of the rugs are in museums today. Condition has become the most important feature when determining price. Fame, rarity and history are also considered when setting a price. In 2014, “Moon,” one of the Guatemala Calder rugs, sold for $16,250. In 2017, a faded limited-edition rug brought $4,688. *** My mother says her bracelet is made of bake-a-lite. What is that? Bakelite is a plastic developed in the early 1900s. It was used for jewelry by the 1930s by major designers. The art deco jewelry became very popular. Bakelite was needed for the war in the 1940s, so the jewelry wasn’t made for about five years. About 1997, the deco jewelry was rediscovered by collectors, and books were published with information and color pictures that made prices skyrocket. Bracelets with inset dots were selling for $300 to $1,000. Small pins were $75 to $300, and carved bracelets were about

Tips and tricks for cutting out cookies Baking is a holiday tradition in many households. The aroma of freshly baked cakes, pies and cookies wafts through the air of many homes this time of year, and that makes the holiday season even more special. Cookies are a tradition passed down through the ages. In medieval Europe, small, spiced cookies were exchanged as treats, and people still bake and share gingerbread cookies today. Cut cookies are some of the most popular cookies to make during the holiday season. Some families may have their share of favorite cookie cutter shapes and dough recipes. Certain techniques can make holiday baking sessions easier and ensure consistent results. • Work on a lightly floured, cool surface, such as a cutting board or stone counter top. Never work on a warm surface, which can cause dough to spread and stick. • Roll out the dough between two sheets of baking or parchment paper. Betty Crocker recommends a thickness of about 1⁄8 inch, unless noted in the recipe. This prevents the dough from sticking, and parchment enables you to easily transfer rolled-out dough to a refrigerator or elsewhere.

• When rolling out dough, portion it out into a few smaller amounts to roll out more easily. This will also help it to chill more readily. • Cookies cut most easily when the dough is chilled. Refrigerate the dough for as long as possible, ideally an hour or more — even overnight. The more chilled, the firmer the dough will be. • Rubber rolling pin rings that slip onto each side of the rolling pin can help ensure that the dough is being rolled out to a uniform thickness. • Dip cookie cutters into flour with each cut. Work from the center and move out to the edges when cutting out your designs. Try to maximize space and avoid scraps and rerolling. • Some expert bakers say that metal cookie cutters cut cleaner than plastic ones. Whichever cutter you use, cut the cookie by pressing straight down; try not to twist or jiggle the cookie cutter when using it. Doughs with a high butter content can help, as the extra grease helps separate the dough from the cutters. • If cut cookies have gotten warmer, place them in the freezer for a few minutes to firm up again and then cook. This will guarantee the cookies will not spread or

distort while baking. Extra steps may seem like they will take a lot of time. However, the extra effort and attention to detail will help produce cookies that win rave reviews.

• On Dec. 11, 1872, already appearing as a well-known figure of the Wild West in popular dime novels, Buffalo Bill Cody makes his first stage appearance in a Chicago-based production of “The Scouts of the Prairie.” • On Dec. 12, 1901, Italian physicist and radio pioneer Guglielmo Marconi succeeds in sending the first radio transmission across the Atlantic Ocean, disproving detractors who said the curvature of the earth would limit transmission to 200 miles or less. • On Dec. 6, 1917, a devastating blast occurs when the Mont Blanc, a French munitions ship, explodes after colliding with another vessel in Halifax harbor in Nova Scotia. The Mont Blanc was packed with 2,300 tons of picric acid, 200 tons of TNT and 35 tons of high-octane gasoline. • On Dec. 7, 1941, a swarm of 360 Japanese warplanes descends on the U.S. naval base at Pearl Harbor in Hawaii in a ferocious early morning assault. The surprise attack devastated the U.S. Pacific fleet and drew the United States into World War II. • On Dec. 9, 1950, Harry Gold, who confessed to serving as a courier of top-secret information on the atomic bomb, is sentenced to 30 years in prison. Gold implicated his brother-in-law and sister, Julius and Ethel Rosenberg, who were later executed for espionage. • On Dec. 10, 1967, soul legend Otis Redding dies in a plane crash in Wisconsin. “(Sittin’ on) The Dock of the Bay” would be released in its “unfinished” form several weeks later. The whistled verse was a placeholder for additional lyrics that Redding had yet to write. • On Dec. 8, 1982, “Sophie’s Choice,” starring Meryl Streep as a Holocaust survivor, opens in theaters. The “choice” refers to a terrible decision Streep’s character is forced to make about which of her two children will live or die while in a concentration camp.

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Keep those sharp Sheep eyes focused on a hazy situation. As things begin to clear up, you’ll find a sharper picture emerging, showing something you’ll need to know. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Watch your expenses through the end of the month. Later, you’ll be glad to have extra money to pay for something that will make an acquisitive Bovine’s heart beat faster. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) You’re now ready to make that oft-deferred commitment, if you still believe it’s what you want. Don’t be afraid to change your mind if you feel you should go in another direction. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Now that you are moving on with your life after that recent disappointment, how about reactivating your travel plans and taking someone special along with you. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Many new friends come into your personal life, which suits all of you social Lions just fine. However, one new friend might make demands that you could find difficult to deal with. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Communication doesn’t exist unless it’s two-way. So, if you’re getting no replies to the signals you’re sending, it could be time to look for someone more receptive.
LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) A workplace complication that you thought was ironed out develops new wrinkles that need attention. Meanwhile, expect continuing improvement in your home life. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) A tense personal problem needs to be talked out before someone decides to walk out. Resist making decisions until full explanations are offered from both sides. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) A technological glitch that caused problems recently will soon be repaired, and life can return to normal. A colleague has a surprising message to deliver. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Your partner might feel that you haven’t been as open with him or her as you should be. Deal with this now, before it turns into something more difficult to handle. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Good news: Many of the stumbling blocks that affected the progress of some of your career projects are fading away. Things also start to look up on the home front. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) You’ll need that strong Piscean pluck to get through waters that will be turbulent for a while. A more positive aspect soon emerges, along with some welcome news. BORN THIS WEEK: You are zealous in the pursuit of truth. You would make an excellent research scientist.

cups whole milk cups cooked turkey, diced cups assorted leftover Thanksgiving veggies 1 sheet frozen puff pastry (from a 17.3-ounce package), thawed 1 egg 1. Preheat oven to 375 F. Grease six (12-ounce) ramekins or bowls, place on a rimmed baking sheet. 2. Heat butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Add onion and cook, stirring occasionally, until tender, 5 to 7 minutes. Add poultry seasoning and stir. Sprinkle flour over onion and cook, stirring, 1 minute. Slowly stir in milk. 3. Bring to a simmer; cook, stirring constantly, until thick and bubbly, 2 to 3 minutes. Stir in turkey and your choice of leftover veggies. Season with salt and pepper. Ladle into prepared ramekins, let cool. 4. Roll out thawed puff pastry on a floured surface to a 1/4-inch thickness. Cut out six circles, or squares, that are 1-inch larger than ramekins or bowls being used. Top each ramekin with puff pastry, crimping edges over sides to seal. 5. Beat the egg with a teaspoon of water or milk. Brush the pastry with egg. Bake until puffed and golden brown, 20 to 25 minutes.
