Featuring hurricane-force winds, the storm killed between 10,000 and 30,000 people. Contact lenses are a viable option for many people who require vision correction. Some find them more convenient than eyeglasses, and people who wear contact lenses are less likely to lose them or leave them behind than they are with traditional eyeglasses. Others feel contacts are more comfortable to wear and reduce the propensity for any blind spots in peripheral vision. While contacts are appropriate for many people, there are some limitations depending on the particular vision problem and age. According to a study titled “Children & Contact Lenses” conducted by the American Optometric Association Research and Information Center in conjunction with the Sports Vision Section and Contact Lens and Cornea Section of AOA, with support from VISTAKON®, a division of Johnson & Johnson Vision Care, Inc., more than half
(51 percent) of optometrists feel it is appropriate to introduce children to soft contact lenses between the ages of 10 and 12 years old, while nearly one in four (23 percent) feel 13 to 14 years old is a suitable age for a child to begin wearing contact lenses. The younger the child is, the lower the percentage of eye doctors who feel it is appropriate to introduce lenses. Age alone may not be a reference for the appropriateness of contact lenses. Parents and eye doctors may take maturity into consideration as well. Contact lenses require a greater level of care than glasses, and parents should factor in that maintenance when deciding if their children should try contact lenses or stick with traditional eyeglasses. Younger children also may not be as dexterous as older contact lens wearers, making it challenging for them to insert and remove contacts safely and properly. While there are no firm rules regarding the right age to begin wearing contact lenses, parents can consider their children’s maturity levels and their eye doctor’s recommendations before making a final decision. Marketing Strategies For Small Business Owners
Small businesses are the backbones of many local communities. Such businesses have helped to revitalize many communities and may benefit communities in ways that would surprise even the most ardent small businesses supporters. Economists at Penn State University studied data on economic growth and residence status of business owners that was from more than 2,900 rural and urban communities. The researchers found that small, locally owned businesses tend to generate higher incomes for community residents than large, non-local firms. Small businesses can be vital to the success of a community, and those businesses’ own success may depend on how well they can market themselves to potential customers. The Small Business Administration notes that only onethird of small businesses will survive 10 years. Those that reach that benchmark often find ways to market themselves and grow revenue. Whether a small business owner is just starting out or looking to continue growing, these marketing strategies can be effective ways to connect with customers. • Take advantage of the free Google listing service. Google My Business is a free service that allows business owners to manage how their business appears across Google, including on
its Search and Map services. A Google listing is essentially the new phonebook listing, as the “Local Consumer Review Survey 2018” from the marketing experts at BrightLocal found that 27 percent of consumers looked online daily for local businesses in 2018. That’s more than double the number of people who did so in 2017, suggesting that more and more consumers are finding local businesses via internet searches every day. • Pay attention to your online reviews. Online reviews can be a mixed bag for business owners and consumers, but reviews still bear considerable weight among the latter. The BrightLocal survey found that 50 percent of consumers between the ages of 18 and 34 always read online reviews when shopping for goods or services. Consumers are most likely to read restaurant reviews, but small businesses, regardless of their industries, can benefit from positive online reviews. • Take part in local festivals. Local events such as Oktoberfest festivals and holiday shopping bazaars provide great opportunities to connect with new customers. Such events tend to attract residents of the community and even those from neighboring towns, providing ample opportunities for small businesses to connect with new customers. • Make your presence known on social media. A 2017 survey from the social media specialists at Sprout Social found that 58 percent of consumers are more likely to buy from a brand they follow on social media than they are to buy from one they do not follow. Small business owners who learn to market their businesses can contribute much to their bottom lines and their local communities.

cups self-rising cake flour*, unsifted 1/3 cup shortening 1 cup milk 1. Heat oven to 450 F. Into large bowl, measure self-rising cake flour. With pastry blender or two knives used scissor-fashion, cut in shortening until evenly combined. *Note: If not using self-rising cake flour in step 1, substitute 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour, 1 1/2 cups cake flour (not self-rising), 1 tablespoon baking powder and 1 teaspoon salt; place in large bowl, then cut in shortening. Continue as in steps 2 through 4. 2. Stir milk into flour mixture just until ingredients are blended. 3. Scoop dough by scant 1/4 cups onto ungreased large cookie sheet. If you like, with floured hands, lightly pat scoops of dough to smooth slightly. 4. Bake biscuits about 15 minutes, or until lightly browned. Serve biscuits warm. Credit score: Raise your credit score and you may be able to lower your car insurance costs. According to the research firm Conning & Co., roughly 92 percent of insurers use your credit information as a factor to determine rates. Studies show that people with bad credit tend to file more and higher claims. 7. Marital status: Statistics show that people who have tied the knot are involved in fewer accidents and given fewer tickets than people who are single. Getting married can reduce insurance premiums, as can combining or bundling policies with your spouse. 8. Driving history: A driving history full of accidents and tickets can affect your insurance rates. However, many tickets and accidents that do not involve injuries stop affecting insurance rates after three years. Driving safely and biding your time until your tickets and accidents no longer influence your rates can save you money. Drivers have control over how much they spend on auto insurance. Safe driving habits, the right choice of vehicle and where drivers choose to live can influence the cost of their auto insurance policies.

Snow may delight young children itching for a day off from school. But for many homeowners, the sight of snow means their time will soon be spent clearing paths and plowing driveways rather than building snowmen and sledding with friends. The sight of falling snow also may inspire some homeowners to think about the roofs of their homes. The Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety warns that it is important to understand the risk of roof collapse due to the weight of snow on the roof. Roof structures that are in good condition can support roughly 20 pounds per square foot. IIBHS says this equates to around four feet of new snow before a roof will become stressed. Total snowfall is not the only factor to consider. Homeowners also must check the type of snow that has fallen. According to House Logic, six inches of wet snow is equal to the weight of about 38 inches of dry snow. That means it may take much less sodden snow to weigh down a roof. IIBHS says that hiring a professional roof contractor is one way to safely remove snow from the roof. Licensed and insured contractors will have the experience to get the job done correctly and safely. Homeowners can expect to pay between $250 and $500 for this job. Roof snow removal is a priority for those who live in mountainous or extremely snowy areas. If unsafe amounts of snow are left on rooftops, leaks, damage and collapse may result.

A warm fire can make even the coldest winter day more enjoyable. The Chimney Safety Institute of America advises homeowners with fireplaces to hire a CSIA-certified chimney sweep to clean their fireplaces. Professional, certified chimney sweeps have extensive knowledge of fireplaces, making them valuable resources who can let homeowners know if any safety issues developed since fireplaces were last used. Pine can produce a lot of creosote, which is a byproduct of wood combustion. Creosote is highly flammable, and as it builds up in a chimney, the risk for a chimney fire increases. Choosing the right wood, making sure it’s well-seasoned and having a chimney professionally cleaned can reduce the risk of a creosoterelated chimney fire. A Level 1 inspection should determine if there are potentially dangerous levels of creosote deposits in the chimney. Before nestling up to a fireplace this winter, homeowners should consider a host of factors and safety measures to ensure their fireplaces are safe and ready for the season ahead.

Seniors are often targeted by criminals. Though many criminals target seniors from afar via telephone or internet scams, criminals seek to enter seniors’ homes. The Bureau of Justice Statistics offers that, between 2003 and 2013, the ratio of property crime to violent crime was higher for the elderly and persons between the ages of 50 and 64 than it was for younger persons between the ages of 25 and 49. Home security is important for people of all ages, but especially so for seniors and aging individuals living alone. By following certain safety tips and developing a home security plan, seniors can feel safer at home. • Lock windows and doors. It may seem like common sense, but failure to repeatedly lock windows and doors can, and often does, give burglars easy entry into the home.
• Think about a smart doorbell. Technology now enables doorbells to provide a video feed to a person’s smartphone or tablet over WiFi. This allows residents to see who is at the door and speak to this person without having to open the door. Some products like Ring® will even register motion activity and record short videos from outside of the house. • Don’t share or leave keys. Avoid leaving keys under a mat or in a flower pot. Others may be watching your actions and gain access to your home while you are away. • Ask for ID. When service people or other individuals come to the door, verify their credentials by asking to see some identification. • Get a home security system. The best protection against burglars is a home security alarm, states HomeSecurityResource.org. Such an alarm often deters burglars from breaking in. • Install a lockable mailbox. Locked mailboxes restrict access to sensitive information, such as bank account numbers, sent in the mail. Make sure retirement checks or other payments are deposited directly into bank accounts instead of having them sent by check. • Use home automation. Home automation, or a “smart home,” can be utilized to turn on lights, set the thermostat, lock doors, and much more. • Adopt a dog. Dogs can be an asset to seniors. Dogs provide companionship and can bark or alert seniors if someone is around or inside of the home. Home security is serious business for seniors who are vulnerable to criminals.

It’s been awhile since I’ve written something for The Reminder. I guess I just got out of the habit, and time moved on. Not that I didn’t think about it, I just didn’t get to it! Then something happened the other day that prompted me to write. I was doing some shopping in a local store, and was approached by a nice lady who said “Crystal Cleansers!” I said, “Yes, you’re right!” She went on to tell me how much she always enjoyed my articles and looked forward to them, and she missed them. She seemed genuinely disappointed that I hadn’t written in awhile. That did it. I told her it would happen soon, so here it is. All about writing. It all started years ago when a customer told me I needed to write down the stories that I would tell her. She would come into the store, usually on a Saturday, and ask what was new. Often times I had a story about something. Then she asked what I would call the articles. We always talked at the counter, so that seemed like a good idea. Over the Counter. (I also told her that if she wanted the real dirt, it would be called Under the Counter, and she’d have to pay…) So, time went on and more articles appeared. Here we are years later, and I hope I’m starting up again! Look for something soon!

Animal lovers who want to welcome pets in their homes may be hesitant to do so while renting. Some might not want to pay additional fees on top of their normal security deposits, while others may fear that pets will cause damage to homes their owners don’t own, leading to potentially costly repairs down the road. According to the Humane Society of the United States, 72 percent of American families who rent their homes have pets. While it might take a little extra work to find pet-friendly apartments, the lasting rewards of pet ownership could outweigh any brief hurdles renters may have to clear as they search for pet-friendly living arrangements. Animal lovers who rent but want pets may need to move out of their current apartments before they can welcome pets into their families. As that process begins, renters can take steps to ensure they find a place both they and their future pets will find welcoming. • Start your apartment search earlier than you otherwise might. Many landlords do not accept pets, so expect the search for a pet-friendly apartment to be more involved than it would be if you did not intend to get a pet. As a result, start your search earlier than you have in the past, giving yourself as much time as possible to find a pet-friendly apartment that also meets your other needs. Local animal shelters
may keep a list of pet-friendly properties, or you can contact local realtors who can help you find buildings that allow pets. The earlier you begin your search, the more time you will give yourself to find a place that has everything you need. If you delay your search, you may have to settle for a place that’s pet-friendly but fails to meet your other criteria. • Get it in writing. Before signing a lease, read it carefully to make sure it clearly spells out that you are allowed to have a pet. Read any restrictions regarding the type of pet and the size of pet you’re allowed to have. For example, many landlords who allow dogs will only allow dogs up to a certain weight. If you have your heart set on a Great Dane, then an apartment that only allows dogs that weight 25 lbs. or less won’t be a good fit. Read the terms regarding pets carefully so you know exactly what you can and cannot have and exactly how much you will have to pay to bring pets into your new home. If there are no terms regarding pets in the lease, ask that specific terms be added before you sign. Doing so will protect you down the road should the landlord discover any petrelated damage when you move out. • Do your homework. If you have never before owned a pet, then speak with a local veterinarian regarding your work schedule, your living arrangements and your expectations as a pet owner. The HSUS notes that problems with housing are the leading reason pets end up homeless. While no pet owner envisions taking their pets to a shelter and giving the animals up for adoption, such scenarios play out every day. By speaking with vets and local pet professionals, you can adopt the right pet for you and your apartment, greatly reducing the chances that you will be forced to give the pet up in the future. There are many different ways to decorate homes and businesses for the holidays. Tall evergreen trees are among the most visible symbols of the holiday season. However, wreaths hung on doors, windows or fences also are ubiquitous this time of year. Wreaths adorn homes primarily during the holidays of Easter and Christmas. Wreaths have also been worn around the head or neck in ceremonial events around the globe for centuries. It is believed the first wreaths date back to ancient Greece and Rome. Members of the Greco-Roman society were known to hand-make ring-shaped items using fresh tree leaves, small fruits, flowers, and twigs. Oftentimes these headdresses symbolized a person’s social status. Others suggest
wreaths evolved to become a Christian symbol of immortality. Regardless of how wreaths are viewed, many people like to display wreaths for the holidays. Wreaths can be purchased premade, but making a wreath on your own can make the holidays even more fun. One of the easiest ways to make a wreath is to design it around a circular floral foam form. Gather supplies to make the wreath. For traditional wreaths, supplies will include sprigs of evergreen (real or artificial), ribbon, floral wire, bows, and artificial berries. Working around the foam form, arrange the boughs of evergreen, using the floral wire to wrap or pin into the foam itself. Keep the layers coming until you get the desired coverage. Embellish with a ribbon or place a bow. The blog A Piece of Rainbow says that creating a wreath jig is an easy way to make a wreath. Cut a dollar-store laundry basket bottom from the top ring to make a template, on which you can place wreathmaking materials so they keep their circular form. Use floral wire or natural jute string to tie the materials together. Experiment with fresh evergreen, twigs, holly branches, or whatever materials you choose. Thick card stock also can serve as the wreath template. Attach artificial flowers or leaves, spray snow, ornaments, or other items to the card stock ring with a firm adhesive. Many craft stores sell wreath forms made of natural vines that have been strung in a ring. These can be decorated in their entirety or left a little sparse to let the natural twine show through. Wreaths may seem like complicated creations. But a little imagination and the right materials is all it takes to create a homemade wreath.
