Inside were several thousand priceless objects, including a gold coffin containing the mummy of the teenage king. • On Nov. 29, 1942, coffee joins the list of items rationed in the United States during World War II. Butter, sugar and milk had been rationed earlier. By the end of the year, cars were limited to 3 gallons of gas per week. • On Nov. 23, 1966, Elvis Presley’s 22nd film, “Spinout,â€? in which Elvis played a singing race car driver, opens in theaters. • On Nov. 24, 1971, a hijacker calling himself D.B. Cooper parachutes from a Northwest Orient Airlines 727 into a raging thunderstorm over Washington state. He had $200,000 in ransom money and was wearing only wraparound sunglasses, a thin suit and a raincoat. No trace of Cooper was ever found, but in 1980 a child found $5,880 of the ransom money. • On Nov. 25, 1990, after a howling wind and rainstorm on Thanksgiving Day, Washington state’s historic floating Lacey V. A new modern house probably has lots of windows, high ceilings, kitchens and bathrooms made with marble. Most rooms are painted with either a mixture of very bright colors or a monotone shade of white or beige. Furniture looks like the first modern designs — simple shapes, little carving or decoration, chairs made of bent wood and metal rods, and plain rectangular storage pieces and tables. Victorian furniture with dark wood, carved and gilt trims, and metal plaques, just doesn’t fit in.

When this 1870 American Renaissance-era cabinet was offered at auction (est. $8,000 to $12,000), there were few bidders. Moore, York, & Howell of Philadelphia, who exhibited at the 1876 Centennial Exposition, made it.

A great example of American Renaissance furniture, over 5 feet high and just short of 5 feet wide, it is a good size for a Victorian room with an 8-foot-high ceiling and lots of wall space. So, while prices for early modern furniture have gone up, this cabinet, bought at a 2007 auction for $18,000, was featured in a well-advertised, well-run auction this year and didn’t sell. *** My mom had some paintings from her childhood and before I dispose of them, I’m trying to determine if they have any value. Where can I go to see if they are worth anything? These would be from the 1930s or ‘40s.

If the paintings are signed, search the artist’s name on the internet to see if other paintings by that artist have sold. You can also contact dealers who sell paintings to see if they have heard of the artist. Prices for paintings by artists that aren’t well-known depend on the desirability of the subject and the skill of the artist. That said, some people buy paintings just because they like the colors and need something that size to fill space on a wall. If they

Data from the U.S. Census Bureau shows there are some 76 million baby boomers — those people born between 1946 to 1964 — across the country. With the youngest of the boomers in their mid-50s and the majority having already reached retirement age, many boomers are trying to decide if it’s time to move out of their family homes and into smaller, more manageable abodes.

Many older adults find they do not need the same amount of space as they did when they had children living at home. Retirees and those on the cusp of retirement may find that downsizing is a smart financial move that frees up more time for recreation.

However, it can be challenging to cut down on living space and then deal with figuring out how to make furniture, belongings and stored items fit in more condensed areas. Moving can be stressful even without having to cut down on prized items. Taking an inventory of belongings can help the process go smoothly.

Before moving, men and women can go room by room, making piles of items that will be kept, donated, sold, or discarded. This can be a tedious task, but it is necessary to avoid clutter in a new home.

People downsizing can attempt to sell items they do not need via newspaper classified sections or online classified sites. Appliances and furniture in excellent shape may fetch good prices. Any extra cash can be put toward buying new items that are size-appropriate for the smaller home.

Psychology Today indicates messy homes and work spaces can contribute to feelings of helplessness, anxiety and overwhelming stress. Clutter bombards the mind with excessive stimuli, makes it more difficult to relax and can constantly signal to the brain that work is never done.

Tackling messes no matter where they are lurking is not a one-time project. Much like losing weight and getting healthy, clearing a home of clutter requires dedication and lifestyle changes.

With these organizational tips and tricks, anyone can work through their home room-by-room and conquer clutter.

Find a place for everything Clutter creeps up as people accumulate possessions over the years. Over time, failure to regularly

go through belongings and thin the herd can lead to the accumulation of clutter.

But clutter also can accumulate if people fail to find a place to put items. Racks for garages, organizational systems for closets and furniture with storage capacity, such as storage ottomans, are some storage solutions that can help people find a place for their possessions.

Downgrading Cat’s Fresh Food Diet DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I was furloughed from my job in April and have been getting by on savings and an unemployment check. With no new job yet, I need to drastically cut back expenses to get through this winter. My cat “Silk” is 9 years old and eats a special diet of prescription canned food plus fresh pet food from the grocery. Will she stay healthy if I temporarily replace her diet with a commercial cat food? — Henry in Worcester, Massachusetts DEAR HENRY: Thank you for putting Silk first in your household budget, especially in these tough times! Give your cat’s veterinarian a call and discuss the situation. Would a four- to six-month break from prescription canned food be OK, and not threaten Silk’s health? The answer depends on the condition for which she’s eating special food.

You can probably stop buying those prepackaged fresh pet foods for your cat, at least until you get financially back on track. Instead, prepare a few days’ worth of fresh cat food at home by steaming rice, peas and a protein like chicken or tuna until fully cooked (do not add spices or salt) and smashing together. Cool and store in the refrigerator.

Fresh food needs to be supplemented with a formulated cat food so that Silk gets key nutrients during this time.

The veterinarian should be able to recommend an off-the-shelf cat food, either dry or canned, that will meet her needs for a few months. If she is taking medications as well, don’t skimp on her medicines, and be sure to include them in your budgeting.
