7 ways to dine ‘out’ when staying in As restaurants, bars and taverns have closed their doors voluntarily or under government orders amid the public health crisis surrounding COVID-19, a population accustomed to the freedom of dining out for special occasions or as part of daily life has found they must make an assortment of changes. However, it’s still possible to enjoy the offerings of your favorite restaurants. Restaurants have made some dramatic changes in an effort to meet the needs of their customers. • Oven-ready meals: Some restaurants are offering oven-ready meals that fully prepared dishes that customers need only heat up at home. • Deep discounts: Certain businesses are cutting prices on menu items in order to generate revenue. The Los Angeles-based Morrison Pub recently slashed prices to $10 or less for items that typically cost more than that. Other restaurants are shuttering dining rooms and providing discounts on take-out as incentives to customers. • Prepaid options: The reservation service Resy has opened up its
service to restaurant owners to offer take-out meals restaurant guests can book and pay for online. Other reservation businesses may soon follow suit. • Delivered spirits: Businesses with on-premise liquor licenses might be able to deliver alcohol and offer it for takeout. Rules depend on where you live, but the New York State Liquor Authority temporarily allowed alcohol takeout beginning in March 2020. • To-go party plans: CEC Entertainment, the parent company of the Chuck E. Cheese and Peter Piper Pizza restaurants, said the concepts would launch new family and birthday packages that included takeout pizza, birthday cake and goodie bags, in addition to two game apps for Chuck E. Cheese that provided virtual tickets redeemable at a later date when restaurants reopen. • Pre-packaged favorites: Certain chain restaurants have long offered frozen selections of their popular appetizers and other dishes. When at the supermarket, check the freezer section for items from restaurants like TGI Fridays™ and PF Chang’s™.

by Jennifer Coates At times like this, when it seems like nothing is the same ~ and everything has changed ~ we look to the “constants in our lives to give us a sense of normalcy. For many of the students who dance at To The Pointe of Performing Arts, the return to dancing and creative movement is not only critical to that feeling of “normalcy, it is indeed “essential. For Sheri Masiello, the owner of To The Pointe dance studios, it is more important than ever to keep things going for her students. While many of her dancers are experiencing a great sense of loss right now, she wants them to know she is still there for them – just like she always has been. As soon as the restrictions on non-essential businesses were announced, Sheri and her talented team of instructors went right to work to find a way to keep their many students dancing and feeling the joy they felt when in studio. They have since created “virtual classes which are held at the same time the “live classes would have been held. The dance instructors who taught those classes continue to teach those classes, all of which can be accessed through “Zoom technology. The virtual classes offered at To The Pointe include Ballet, Pointe, Tap, Jazz, Hip Hop, Lyrical and Contemporary. All ages from creative movement to seniors (and everything in between) are welcome to participate. There is something for anyone here at these longstanding studios. Classes are taught by the staff of twenty instructors who have long been part of the team at To The Pointe, many of whom have been there since the studios first opened. Sheri and her devoted team wanted to keep this virtual experience as “typical as

possible so students will continue to see their favorite instructors right in the forefront where they belong. At this time of year, dance students are usually busy getting ready for their end-of-the-year, June recital where they showcase a year’s worth of diligence, discipline and dedication. There is still hope that the recital will go forward, so Sheri and her team will focus on techniques and choreography in preparation. College-bound high school seniors who would be normally preparing for the last recital of their “childhood years will still be recognized with a “Senior Spotlight page on studio’s website ~ though it is far from the real thing, it is an important gesture for
those who have worked so hard. Dancers, both new and ongoing, can pay tuition online. The same rates will apply, but in this time of economic hardship, contact Sheri with any questions you may have. To The Pointe of Performing Arts studios are found at three locations: in Cranston, Smithfield and Coventry. Visit their website at www.ToThePointeofPerformingArts.com for details about how to join their virtual classes and to learn more about their summer programs! What to expect when adopting a shelter dog Millions of dogs reside in shelters or in foster homes just waiting for someone to make them permanent members of their family. The ASPCA says there are nearly four million dogs in shelters across America. Bringing home a puppy or an older dog can be an exciting, selfless endeavor. Shelter dogs have the capacity to be loving, devoted pets. Unfortunately, many such dogs have been dealt difficult hands, ending up in shelters through no fault of their own. Prospective pup parents should be aware that there can be a transitional period as dogs acclimate to their new homes. Understanding what to expect the first few weeks and months can be helpful. • Creatures of habit: Dogs are creatures of habit and feel most comfortable when they know what to expect. Moving from a shelter into a home can be a big change. Shelter dogs will need time to understand the workings of a household. By remaining consistent and patient, dog owners can help their pooches acclimate to their new surroundings. Feed the dog at the same time and place each day. Take the dog for a walk the same time each day with the same route. Knowing what to expect can be calming for the dog. • Housetraining regression: New puppies likely do not fully know the rules of housetraining, but even older dogs who may have been housetrained can regress in a new environment. Pet parents may have to go back to basics and reinforce housetraining lessons. • Shyness and anxiety: It’s impossible to know what dogs went through before landing in a shelter. Shelter workers may have conducted certain tests, such as food aggression or resource guarding, but that only paints part of the picture. It will take

time for the dog to trust and understand, and dogs may be timid and experience anxiety for a brief period. Some may even act out by exhibiting damaging behavior. • Safe space: The experts at Hill’s Pets advise employing a crate that can serve as a den for the dog. It not only is an area that can keep the dog out of trouble as he or she learns the rules of the house, but it also can serve as a safe haven that is familiar and comforting. • Training classes: Enroll in training classes so that the pup begins to learn commands. Obedience training also helps keep the animal safe. • Vet care: Make an appointment to have the shelter dog checked over by a vet as soon as possible. This helps everyone get on a vaccination schedule and can pinpoint illnesses or behavior problems. Many shelter dogs have common communicable illnesses like kennel cough or worms that require prompt treatment. Shelter dogs can become warm and loving pets with the right care and a little patience.

How to bring beneficial bees back Bees, birds and butterflies play integral roles in pollinating many of the crops humans rely on for sustenance. The National Pollinator Garden Network, through the National Wildlife Federation, recently launched the Million Pollinator Garden Challenge, an effort to increase the amount of nectar and pollen food sources as the organization aims to reverse the alarming decline of pollinators such as honey bees, native bees and monarch butterflies. Many people are afraid of bees because of their propensity to sting. Unlike their wasp and yellow-jacket cousins, honeybees and bumblebees are much more docile and content to hop from bloom to bloom without paying humans any mind. The only time such bees may resort to stinging is if someone inadvertently steps on them. Bees are beneficial for yards. Gardener’s Supply Company says one out of every three bites of food humans take depends on a pollinator. That’s because about 150 crops grown in the United States depend on pollinators. Even though there are 4,000 species of native or wild bees in the continental United States, many populations are in decline. According to the Pollinator Partnership, various areas of North America have lost more than 50 percent of their managed honeybee
colonies in the past 10 years. Bringing these important pollinators back will take a little work, but it is possible. • Plants that offer cover can be attractive to bees that desire a respite from the sun and heat. Coleus and other ground cover offerings can be handy. • Offer water in shallow dishes, as even bees need a cool drink to stay hydrated. • Bees like various plants, so plant more than one species. Some plants that bees tend to like include alyssum, aster, geranium, bee balm, poppies, and clover. • When planting, include some native species. • Brush piles, dry grasses and dead woods offer nesting areas for bees. • The Gardener’s Supply Company also says that bees find blue, purple and yellow flowers most appealing. Opt for more of these hues when planning gardens. • Above all, avoid using pesticides in the yard. Even organic ones can be toxic to bees and other pollinators, and they may contribute to colony collapse disorder. With these techniques in mind, homeowners can attract more bees to their yards and gardens, which can benefit bees and humans alike.

Improve soil quality for a better lawn A lush, green lawn can vastly improve a home’s curb appeal. Thick, healthy grass indicates that homeowners care enough about their properties to invest the time, effort and money to make them beautiful. According to the landscaping tool company Troy-Bilt, soil fertility is the foundation of healthy lawns. In fact, the quality of the soil is essential whether one is growing acres of grass, potted plants or vegetable garden beds. No matter which type of soil a homeowner is working with, there are various ways to make it better.
Remove thatch Thatch is a tightly knotted layer of leaves, grass roots, stems, and other debris that accumulates between the grass blades and the soil. Too much thatch can hinder the movement of water, air and nutrients into the soil. According to organic fertilizer company Organo-Lawn, thatch often occurs if the production of dead organic material in the lawn exceeds the ability of the microorganisms in the soil to break down that organic matter. A half-inch of thatch is normal. If thatch gets too thick, it will need to be removed. The home improvement resource DIY Network says dethatching can take place
RIVERS LAWNCARE

in the summer, fall and winter using a thatching rake.
Aerate A lawn aerator will create holes in the soil. This can improve drainage and encourage worms and helpful microorganisms that require oxygen to thrive in the soil. The Briggs & Stratton Company says the best time to aerate a lawn is during the growing season when the grass can heal and fill in any holes, such as spring and fall. Aeration can help develop deeper grass roots for a healthier lawn. Test and amend soil A great lawn has loamy soil, which has a key ratio of clay, silt and sand. Silt is a granular material of a size between sand and clay that originates from quartz and feldspar. It is the most fertile of the three types of soil components. Sand does not retain water, but it helps to create spaces in the soil that permit air to circulate. Clay particles are small and bind together tightly, but clay is naturally nutrient-rich. The home improvement site BobVila.com says loamy soil should have equal parts sand and silt and half as much clay. If the lawn is not yet established, loamy soil can be created and then the grass seeds planted. For established soil, after removing thatch and aerating, top-dressing the lawn can help. This involves adding a thin layer of soil over the lawn. It can improve the soil without killing the existing turf. Ideally, it should be done in early fall or spring, as this gives the grass time to grow through three to four more mowings before severe heat or cold sets in. Healthy soil is vital to a lush lawn. It takes a little work, but improving soil can create vibrant, healthy, green grass.
