HOLLYWOOD — Margot Robbie is aflame! As if playing the immortal Barbie (to Ryan Gosling’s Ken), along with Will Ferrell, wasn’t crazy enough, she’s got three more films coming. Premiering Nov. 4 is the period comedy “Canterbury Glass,” directed by David O. Russell, with
Anya Taylor-Joy, Christian Bale, Zoe Saldana, Robert De Niro, Rami Malek, Michael Shannon, Chris
Rock and Taylor Swift. Then “La La Land’s” Oscar-winning director Damien Chazelle steered her through “Babylon,” co-starring Katherine
Waterson, Brad Pitt, Olivia Wilde
and Tobey Maguire, and Wes Anderson’s “Asteroid City,” boasting five Oscar winners, but no release date. Robbie received Oscar nominations for “I, Tonya” (2018) and “Bombshell” (2020).

“Westworld’s” Thandiwe Newton, currently in “All the Old Knives,” with Chris Pine, has withdrawn as Channing Tatum’s main squeeze in “Magic Mike’s Last Dance,” saying it’s due to “having to handle family matters.” Salma Hayek, hot off a buzz from “House of Gucci” and “Eternals,” and due in “Puss in Boots: The Last Wish,” is assuming her role.
Eddie Murphy has signed to star as Axel Foley once again in “Beverly Hills Cop 4” for Netflix, with Jerry Bruckheimer producing again. They have their work cut out for them; the original “Cop” grossed $316 million in 1984, “Cop 2” dipped to $276 million and “Cop 3” sank to $119 million. Murphy has already completed “You People,” written by and co-starring Jonah Hill (with Kenya Barris, who is directing). It also has Julia Louis-Dreyfus, David Duchovny and Rhea Pearlman. ***
Johnny Depp and Amber Heard are finally having their days in court. Depp filed a $50 million defamation suit against Heard in a Virginia court. It took weeks to set up a jury for the case, and it’s expected to drag on for six weeks or more, unless these actors keep padding their parts and speeches when they take the stand and testify on their own behalf. The press circus outside is worth it alone.
Depp’s last film, “Minamata,” made in 2020, was released in February to a mere $1.7 million gross. His next project is supposed to be an untitled film directed by French actress and director Maiwenn Le Besco in which he’d play King Louis XV. It probably can’t start until the trial is resolved.
Amber Heard is second-billed behind title star Jason Momoa in the upcoming “Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom,” due March 17, 2023. This sequel also stars Nicole Kidman, Patrick Wilson, Dolph Lundgren and Willem Dafoe. Apparently, the idea for this sequel came from Momoa, who gets story credit with David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick. Depp, who fell in love with Amber at first look, probably wishes, after their violent shouting matches, that she could be seen but not HEARD!
