Smashed Avocado Toast With Egg Smashed avocado toast with egg is one of the best brunch recipes out there. It’s been all over restaurant menus, but our easy recipe really takes the cake for its simplicity.

1 ripe avocado 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice Kosher salt and pepper 4 slices bread, toasted 4 hard-boiled eggs, peeled and sliced 1 bunch small multicolored radishes, thinly sliced Chopped fresh chives and sesame seeds, for serving 1. In medium bowl, smash avocado with lemon juice and 1/4 teaspoon each salt and pepper.

2. Spread on toast and top with eggs and radishes and sprinkle with chives and sesame seeds.

TIP: You could also add a fried or poached egg, or top it off with crumbled bacon, sliced scallions, or even a drizzle of pesto.

The lines between the outdoors and indoors are being blurred. Homeowners build extensive outdoor living spaces so they can relax on weather-resistant furniture and even cook in lavish kitchens in their backyards. In addition, indoor three-season rooms full of bright, open windows that showcase outdoor vistas challenge the boundaries between outside and inside.

For those working with limited budgets, there are some easy, inexpensive ways to enjoy the majesty of natural landscapes indoors. Houseplants can be used to improve indoor spaces, and they also provide various health benefits.

Help with allergies According to WebMD, rooms with houseplants tend to have less dust and mold in them than those without any foliage. Leaves and other parts of the plants serve as natural filters, catching airborne particles and allergens. Plants with textured leaves might be especially effective at trapping particles.

Put more oxygen into the air The human respiratory system works by bringing in oxygen and releasing carbon dioxide.

Plants do the opposite during photosynthesis.

They absorb carbon dioxide and then release oxygen. Plants can put much more oxygen into the air, improving indoor conditions.

Increase indoor humidity and reduce illness Studies from the Agricultural University of Norway found that indoor plants can increase humidity in indoor spaces, which decreases the incidences of sore throats, dry coughs, dry skin, and the common cold. Higher absolute humidity can decrease the chances of survival and transmission of the flu virus.

Filter the air Researchers who presented their work at the 252nd National Meeting & Exposition of

the American Chemical Society found certain houseplants can combat the potentially harmful effects of volatile organic compounds. Plants may help filter out VOCs like benzene, acetone and formaldehyde, which can enter indoor air via cleaning supplies, dry-cleaned clothes, furniture, printers, and paints.

Improve interior atmosphere Prevention magazine says plants can be used to screen unattractive areas, moderate room temperature by shading spots from the sun and even reduce noise. Plants also can improve ambiance and create a pleasing atmosphere in a room.

Can improve mood Growing and caring for plants can alleviate everyday stress. A nationwide study from UK Magazine Gardeners World found 80 percent of gardeners declared themselves satisfied with life compared to 67 percent among non-gardeners. Gardeners were more positive mentally.

Greenery can help people feel more at home and improve mental health. A rehab center in Norway found patients reported a greater increase in well-being four weeks after having greenery added to their surroundings.

Houseplants can improve indoor areas and positively affect personal health.

Preventive care and the pandemic Procrastination is not typically considered a good thing. But as the world spent much of 2020 confronting the COVID-19 pandemic, putting certain things on hold became part of the new normal.

In an effort to reduce infection rates, public health officials with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the World Health Organization urged people to limit their in person interactions with people outside of their own households. As a result, many of the things people do on a regular basis, including seeing their physicians for wellness visits, were rescheduled.

It’s understandable that many people postponed preventive care and wellness visits during the pandemic, but it’s also potentially dangerous. For example, researchers with the Health Care Cost Institute found that childhood vaccinations declined by roughly 60 percent in mid-April 2020 compared with 2019. Other screenings and preventive exams, including mammograms, pap smears and colonoscopies, also declined by significant percentages during the pandemic compared to the previous year.

The National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion notes the power of preventive care is undeniable. In fact, the NCCDPHP points out that, while chronic diseases are among the most common and costly of all health problems, they’re also among the most preventable. Annual wellness visits and early detection efforts like routine screenings for atrisk populations can uncover problems before they escalate into something more serious. In addition, annual physicals, which are provided free of charge through many health insurance policies, provide great opportunities for doctors to advise patients on their overall health and how to improve it if exams and blood work turn up any red flags.

• Schedule telemedicine appointments. The number of telemedicine appointments has skyrocketed during the pandemic. While the transition from predominantly in-person appointments to telemedicine might have been a reluctant and rocky one at the start of the pandemic, many doctors’ offices have since firmly established their telemedicine protocols. The Mayo Clinic advises patients who have not yet tried telemedicine to contact their doctors’ offices to arrange an appointment.

• Inquire about office procedures. Doctors try to keep patients healthy, not get them sick.

Various medical organizations, including the American Academy of Family Physicians, have provided thorough checklists to help physicians prepare their offices to welcome patients during the pandemic. Patients can ease their concerns by contacting their doctors’ offices and asking them about their pandemic-related protocols.

• Don’t hesitate to make requests. There’s no such thing as being too safe from COVID-19, so patients can work with their doctors to calm their fears even further. Ask to pay copays over the phone and request that the front desk call you when the doctor is ready so you don’t have to sit in the waiting room.

In a large skillet over medium heat, add the olive oil, then add the chopped onion, the chile flakes or cayenne pepper or hot sauce, salt, pepper, paprika, cumin and cloves or cinnamon, and cook for 5 minutes, or until the onion becomes soft and translucent. Add the garlic and cook for another 1-2 minutes.

2. Stir in the marinara sauce and turn the heat to high to bring the sauce to a boil. Add the spinach, one handful at a time, and stir it in to wilt it.

3. Turn the heat to low. Using the back of a large spoon, make 4 indentions (wells) in the sauce to place the eggs. Gently crack the eggs in the skillet into the indentions in the tomato sauce and cover the skillet with a lid for 3 to 5 minutes, or until the whites of the eggs are cooked and set.

4. Sprinkle the feta cheese around the eggs and on top of the sauce.

Garnish with the cilantro, basil or parsley, if desired, and serve warm with crusty bread or rolls to mop up the sauce. Breakfast is my favorite meal of the day, and eggs are one of my favorite ingredients any time of the day!

Eggs are a great way to start your day because they’re an almost perfect food. Whole eggs are nutritious and contain almost every nutrient you need to maintain good health, and they keep you feeling full between meals.

One large egg has 13 essential vitamins and minerals, and protein, all for 70 calories. While egg whites contain some of the high-quality protein, riboflavin and selenium, most of an egg’s beneficial properties are found in the yolk. Here are some vitamins and nutrients: Vitamin D — critical for bone health and immune function. Eggs are one of the only foods that naturally contain vitamin D. Lutein and zeaxanthin — antioxidants that are believed to reduce the risk of developing cataracts and slow the progression of age-related macular degeneration, a disease that develops with age and is one of the leading causes of blindness in older adults.

Choline — essential for normal functioning of all cells. Brain development and memory may be enhanced by the choline content of eggs, and the consumption of eggs is particularly important during pregnancy to support healthy brain development of the fetus.

First, order Chip a properly sized halter online, and use this on walks.

A halter will spread out the contact points across the stronger parts of his little body. This will prevent injury when Chip pulls against the leash.

Halters also are much more comfortable; the uncomfortable collar may be stressing him out.

I’d like you to look up a dog trainer in your area who specializes in small dogs, who can be little tornados on a good day.

Many trainers are adapting their lessons to an online format, so you can meet with them at home over a conferencing app like Zoom or Google Meet.

While you’re waiting for that first session, start working on reinforcing Chip’s basic behavioral training. Work with him at home on the commands “come,” “sit,” “stay” and “lie down.”

During walks, work with him on “heel,” “sit” and “stay.” These training sessions also will help Chip work off some of that energy, and he’ll be thrilled with all the attention he’s getting, too.

How to prioritize your bills during the pandemic Few people might have expected 2020 to unfold the way it did. A thriving economy and low unemployment numbers helped 2020 start off on a prosperous foot. But by mid-March, uncertainty set in.

The World Health Organization declared a COVID-19 pandemic in March, and the ripple effects of that were profound. Since the novel coronavirus began spreading across the globe, millions of people have lost their lives, millions more have survived the virus after lengthy hospital stays and hundreds of millions more lost their jobs. Estimates from the International Labour Organization in June 2020 suggested as many as 400 million full-time jobs were lost due to the COVID-19 outbreak.

Such widescale job loss left millions of people wondering how they were going to pay their bills while out of work.

Though there’s no magical formula to help people make it through a recession unscathed, learning to prioritize bills can help people stay on the right financial track even after losing their jobs.

• Make sure the necessities come first. The credit reporting agency Experian notes that health and safety should always be a person’s top priority in a tough financial situation. Food and shelter should take precedence, so always pay for food and housing costs first.

Change your eating habits to dine out less and make grocery lists before visiting the store so you’re less likely to make potentially costly impulse buys while shopping. A 2018 survey from Slickdeals. net found that 70 percent of consumers’ impulse buys are spent on food, so creating a grocery list can help people save substantial amounts of money. In regard to housing, if you’re accustomed to paying additional principle on your mortgage each month, continue to do so only if you can still afford it.

• Don’t cut costs in regard to medical care. Make sure you keep your medications up-to-date and continue to visit your health care provider. Medical debt is a substantial problem in the United States. A 2019 study published in the American Journal of Public Health found

that roughly two-thirds of all bankruptcies in the United States were tied to medical issues. Unemployed professionals should keep in mind that medical issues may prevent them from reentering the workforce when the economy recovers from COVID-19, so it’s imperative that medical care and maintenance continue to remain a priority even in difficult financial times.

Home Improvement Most glass bottles identified the contents inside with embossed letters on the container or a paper label. But a special group, usually apothecary bottles or special gifts, were made with “labels under glass.” The medical bottles usually had a label with a black name written in a fancy type style, gold leaf trim, plus a solid glass cover for the label. It was made to fit into a shaped indent on the side of the bottle, making a smooth bottle with a protected label.

There also were bottles with labels under glass made with color pictures of attractive women, season’s greetings or other messages used for gifts, or barber product containers displayed in barber shops. They were made from the mid1800s to the early 1900s. Decorative “back bar” bottles were often whiskey bottles refilled with colored water when the whiskey was sold. They were probably made before Prohibition.

Condition of these bottles is important.

The glass label may crack, and the glue used for the paper label discolors.

A small, round flask with a label under glass picturing a girl was in the recent sale by Glass Works Auctions in East Greenville, Pennsylvania; it was made at the end of the 19th century and sold for $468. *** I have many Beanie Babies bought back in the ‘90s, when they were the craze. I have many originals, including the purple Princess Diana bear. A couple of websites listed it for several thousand dollars, which I hardly think is possible. Where can I find out a true going value?

The first Beanie Babies were issued in 1993 and sold for $5 each. Ty Warner, the creator of Beanie Babies, began retiring a few of the plush toys in 1995, and prices rose as collectors tried to find them.

Life changed dramatically in 2020.

When the World Health Organization declared a COVID-19 pandemic in March 2020, hundreds of millions of people across the globe were forced to change how they go about their daily lives, including how they exercise.

Health-conscious adults accustomed to exercising at local gyms had to find new ways to exercise in the wake of the pandemic. Many gyms were forced to close in areas hit hard by COVID-19, and that left many people without access to fitness equipment like weights and cardiovascular machines. Resilient men and women soon found ways to exercise, and many of them embraced walking.

Though walking might not provide the same level of intensity that fitness enthusiasts are accustomed to, the Arthritis Foundation® notes the various ways walking benefits the body.

• Walking protects against heart disease and stroke. Walking strengthens the heart and protects it against heart disease. The AF also notes that walking lowers blood pressure. In fact, post-menopausal women who walk just one to two miles per day can lower their blood pressure by nearly 11 points in 24 weeks, while women who walk for 30 minutes a day can reduce their risk of stroke by 20 percent.

• Walking strengthens the bones.

New York-based Plancher Orthopedics and Sports Medicine notes that walking can stop the loss of bone mass for people with osteoporosis. In addition, post-menopausal women who incor-

porate 30 minutes of walking into their daily fitness regimens can reduce their risk of hip fractures by 40 percent.

• Walking can extend your life. The AF notes that one study linked walking to longer life expectancy, finding that people who exercise regularly in their fifties and sixties were 35 percent less likely to die over the next eight years than people who never walked.

• Walking can improve mood. One study from researchers at California State University, Long Beach, found that the more steps people taking during the day, the better their moods were.

• Walking can lower risk for cognitive decline. Walking also has been linked to a lower risk for age-related cognitive decline. A study from the University of Virginia Health System found that men between the ages of 71 and 93 who walked more than a quarter of a mile per day had half the incidence of dementia and Alzheimer’s disease compared to men who walked less. In addition, a study from researchers at the University of California, San Francisco, found that age-related memory decline was lower among women ages 65 and older who walked 2.5 miles per day than it was among women who walked less than half a mile per week.

Foot traffic increased as people were forced to find new ways to exercise during the COVID-19 pandemic. Walking is a great way to stay in shape and even provides some lesser known benefits for people who walk each day.
