On September 13th, at the District’s Annual Meeting YOU will be asked to vote for two (2) open seats on the Board of Directors. The Board of Directors, “conduct the business of the District” according to the CCFD Charter (a copy is available on the website: www.CCFDRI.com). Right now, there are three Directors who are aligned with the employees/firefighters. If another Director is elected who is similarly minded and influenced, then the District will be BACK in the control of the employees… exactly where it was eight years ago when it was driven into bankruptcy through gross and incompetent mismanagement and poor, employee-influenced decisions that wasted the taxpayers’ – YOUR – valuable tax dollars. Do not allow the District to return to the control and influence of the employees. Examples of areas where employee-influenced decisions adversely impact the taxpayers: not managing injured-on-duty claims; ensuring that time (vacation and hours worked) is accurately accounted for; and, accepting grievances without thorough push-back or challenge. Just this year, the administration saved the District millions by challenging unsupported injured-on-duty claims, which could have had lasting disability pension impacts to the District and the taxpayers as legacy costs and injured-on-duty cost. These are NOT the type of administrative responsibilities that can be left to a Fire Chief – there must be “civilian” management and oversight, just like in our federal government where the military have civilian oversight. At the next meeting, I plan to share some information about the future of the District and how decisions made now and in the future will have an important impact to the District. As I have said, I am not running for re-election. What I am trying to do is INFORM the people of the District so no one can honestly say they were not given the FACTS…or they were not TOLD about important things impacting the District, or that they DIDN’T KNOW about THEIR DISTRICT.

Community News COVENTRY PUBLIC LIBRARY LAUNCHES SUMMER MOBILE LIBRARY Coventry Public Library is excited to announce that we have received a grant from the Rhode Island Office of Library and Information Services (OLIS), which will be used to launch a pilot program this summer for a Mobile Library. Our Mobile Library van will bring books, library programs, and services to locations all over Coventry during the months of July and August, 2021. hile there will always be market trends to track and report, in all reality for many folks, the time to buy or sell depends on your unique and specific situation. If you’re in the phase of life, ready to leave the family home to be on your own but renting just doesn’t make sense and your finances allow you to be a homeowner, then the time may be right for you. Perhaps your family size has increased, and you need more space, well, you make that move to upsize. Maybe you’re living in that spacious family home, finding yourself empty nesters, or can no longer manage the tasks of maintaining property, you may be ready make that move to downsize. Others make real estate investments to improve their portfolio. Having the luxury of taking advantage of a healthy market situation, can allow a profitable transaction, and enjoy positive business opportunities. Our current environment allows buyers to purchase property at low interest rates, affording more for their budget. There are a variety of loan products for buyers to utilize based on their credit standing, financial situation, and affordability. Sellers are enjoying increased home values due to an overall lack of inventory, and buyers excited to take advantage of those lower interest rates, and affordable loan products. When sellers are in a position to either move up or downsize, the increased inventory will level out the balance to a more “normal” market There are many tools available for buyers to be tuned in to available purchase opportunities, as well as statistics and market values. Buyers and their agents representing them are aware when properties are listed and priced well or overpriced for the market area.
Most recent statistics for R.I single family sale activity… Statistics released by the Rhode Island Association of Realtors indicate July 14, 2021 -- The Rhode Island Association of Realtors released June sales statistics today which portray another double-digit, year-over-year increase in price. At $385,000, June’s median sales price of single-family homes represents a 24.6 percent gain since June of last year and a 5.5 percent gain from the previous month. The number of days a home stayed on the market fell by 50 percent from June 2020 to just 27 days, one more indication of a frenzied market characterized by strong buyer demand and insufficient inventory. The inventory of single-family homes for sale regained its footing last month after experiencing a significant dip in the prior month, though the supply remained 31 percent lower than that reported in June 2020. The latest data shows that inventory would deplete in 1.6-months at June’s rate of sales, the highest level since November of last year. In May, RI Realtors reported less than a one-month supply of single-family homes for sale, approximately five months short of the supply typically characterized by a balanced market. While sales activity increased 19.4 percent compared to 12 months earlier, a more telling indicator is the comparison to 2019, the year closings were unaffected by the economic shutdown. June sales in 2021 represented a 1.9 percent increase compared to the same period two years earlier.

Although this may be the situation, in many cases depending on contract language or financing type, when a sale is being financed, the sale price will be required to meet the appraisal results at fair market value. There’s something for everyone in the current residential real estate market. Buyers can take advantage of interest rates that have remained near historic lows, and many sellers who have waited for gains in their property equity to be able to sell, are now in the position to do so. In the aftermath of the COVID-19 lockdown, labor shortages and access to certain products affects numerous industries, including remodeling. Even so, after extra time at home and delays caused by the pandemic, there is high demand for home renovation projects. If you’re planning a home remodel or construction project, consider these tips from professional remodelers to avoid frustration and ensure your vision comes to life.

Do Research and Plan Ahead Mapping out your project early and thoroughly can help you avoid delays. This is especially important when it comes to materials, said John Brown of Bliffert Lumber and Hardware. “The quicker a homeowner can make selections, the sooner we can get it on order and get it in,” Bliffert said. Some contractors are adjusting the way they approach planning to offset delays. For example, selecting materials and finishes at the outset, instead of as you progress through the project like you normally would, may mean the materials are available when you need them. “The design process has really changed,” said Robi Kirsic of TimeLine Renovation and Design. “We’re still designing based on homeowners’ wishes and dreams, but we’re also modifying by providing options based on what’s available.” Know Where You’re Willing to Compromise Whether you’re able or willing to compromise often comes down to why you’re doing the renovation in the first place. “Some homeowners are specific about what they want,” Kirsic said. “They’ve been waiting for a long time to do this project and they’re not doing it to compromise. Others have a time constraint for one reason or another; they don’t have the luxury of waiting.” It’s a sentiment echoed by others, who caution
that you may be able to get an item you have your heart set on, but you may need to be willing to wait. “If you have your heart set on a certain bathtub, it might be a 6- or 8-month wait, but another one might be available sooner,” said Jason Hensler of Marvin Windows and Doors. Avoid Making Changes Once your plans are set and your materials have been ordered, avoid unnecessary delays by changing your project scope or material selection. In this environment, project timelines are extremely tight and even minor changes can create significant disruptions, especially if there’s a delay in obtaining different materials or your new ideas require a different crew that wasn’t already scheduled for your job. Choose a Trustworthy Partner While these are unusual times, having a reliable contractor can make the project run more smoothly and help you feel more comfortable as the project progresses. “Use someone you trust, someone who is part of a reputable group like the National Association of the Remodeling Industry,” Brown said. That way, if you encounter unexpected bumps along the way, you can be confident they will be handled professionally and appropriately. Brown encourages his teams to communicate early and often, which helps homeowners understand and trust they’re doing everything possible to keep the job on track.

Few things say “summer” like a big slice of cold, juicy melon. Watermelon, cantaloupe and honeydew melons exemplify the beautiful colors and sweet taste of summer. In season from June to September,

Melon salsa and chips deli meat. Traditionally, you’d see cantaloupe with prosciutto, but that’s rather expensive. Thinly sliced deli ham or smoked turkey give that same sweet, smoky, savory combination at a fraction of the cost. Melon Salsa Fresca — If you like your sweet with a little heat, you’ll love this. In a mixing bowl, combine the zest and juice of 1 lime, 1/2 tablespoon
honey and 1/4 teaspoon salt. Add 3 cups mixed melon, diced; 3/4 cup cucumber, diced; 1/2 cup any color bell pepper, minced; 1/4 cup red onion, minced; 2 tablespoons cilantro, chopped; and one small jalapeno pepper, finely minced, with ribs and seeds removed. (Use caution when working with jalapenos.) Gently mix and chill. Serve with your favorite chips, over grilled chicken, in fish tacos or a grain bowl, or green salad, — just put it on everything! Summer Sangria — Add mixed melon to your favorite white wine. This is when to use boxed wine, or as I call it “Chateaux Cardboardaux.” Into a large pitcher, place 3 cups of vino, a healthy shot of brandy, 1 tablespoon sugar, a few sprigs of fresh basil and melon balls to your heart’s content. Serve over ice, mixed with sparkling water. Melon Vodka — Let’s upgrade some inexpensive vodka. Place chopped melon in a clean jar and top off with vodka. Pop that in the fridge at least three days, the longer the better. This makes an excellent martini with a twist of lime, or a Melon Mule, which is melon vodka with ginger ale and lime juice over ice. Don’t throw away that fruit! Remember, boozy fruit is the best fruit. As you plan your summer celebration, be sure to put melon on your shopping list. Terrestrial Globe Home schooling and extra time spent with family because of coronavirus health rules has created a demand for maps, globes and more information about other countries. It is not difficult to figure out the probable age of a globe. The older the globe, the higher the price might be. The first terrestrial globe known to historians was probably made in 1492, a globe showing what the land mass looked like on a sphere. It was created in Germany. A terrestrial globe you might buy today at a flea market or house sale is probably less than 100 years old. Look for the name of the manufacturer. You can research when the company made globes. Early makers are listed online and in schoolbooks. You can note the country names on a globe and make a list to guide your search for a date. There have been many name changes and they overlap in time, so a list helps. Russia became the Soviet Union in 1922. There is a song that reminds us, “Now it’s Istanbul not Constantinople,” dating the change in 1930. And Persia became Iran in 1935. Siam changed its name to Thailand in 1939. There have been many more changes, but these should help spot a globe made before the 1930s. Israel was created in 1948. The Gold Coast became Ghana in 1957. Ceylon became Sri Lanka in 1972. Czechoslovakia split into two countries in 1993 and a new map or globe now calls them the Czech Republic and Slovakia. The first celestial globes showing the positions of stars were created in the second century, and they are also made today. Probably the most expensive new globe available is one sold by Hammacher Schlemmer for $14,000. A new school globe can sell for as little as $70. *** I inherited my dad’s medical schoolbooks from the 1940s and ‘50s. They’re all in very good condition. It’s Fair Time, but many county and state fairs have been put on hold due to the pandemic. So, we decided to hold a recipe fair of our own, and declared this the Best of Stove Winner! 3/4 cup no-fat sour cream 2 eggs or equivalent in egg substitute 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 1½ cups all-purpose flour Sugar substitute to equal 1/2 cup sugar, suitable for baking 1 teaspoon baking soda 2 teaspoons pumpkin pie spice 1 cup raisins 1. Preheat oven to 350 F. Spray a 9-by-9-inch cake pan with butter-flavored cooking spray. 2. In a large bowl, combine sour cream, eggs and vanilla extract. Add flour, sugar substitute, baking soda and pumpkin-pie spice. Mix just to combine. Fold in raisins. Spread batter into prepared cake pan. 3. Bake for 20 to 25 minutes. Place cake pan on wire rack and let set for at least 5 minutes. Makes 8 servings. • Each serving equals: 173 calories, 1g fat, 5g protein, 36g carb., 205mg sodium, 1g fiber; Diabetic Exchanges: 1 1/2 Starch, 1 Fruit.
