Poke a small hole with a large safety pin at each end of a washed raw egg. Carefully wiggle the pin or a toothpick into one of the holes to break the yolk. Place a drinking straw over the hole on top, and blow through the straw, collecting the contents of the egg in a small dish. Rinse out the empty shell and let dry completely before decorating.

Easter Egg-y Ideas Are Real Kid-Pleasers Hop to it! Easter is on its way. Put your busy schedule on hold for an evening or Saturday afternoon and make the traditional craft of egg decorating a family affair. How about sharing the fun with friends who will no doubt contribute to and enliven the memory making creativity? Here are some Easter egg-y ideas that are real kid-pleasers. For the first three, all you need are hard-cooked white eggs, prepared decorating dyes in small bowls and a variety of household items.
RUBBER-BAND TIE-DYE Wind two or three rubber bands of various widths snuggly around egg. Dye the egg and let dry. Remove the rubber bands to reveal the designs. STICKER DESIGNS Stick peel-off stars, dots or other shapes randomly on an egg. Be sure the stickers adhere completely to the egg before dipping in the dye. Let dry, then peel off stickers while they are still damp to reveal the designs. TAPE AND DRAW Wrap a piece of masking tape around an egg. Dye. Gently remove tape and add your own designs on the white space with markers. HOW TO BLOW OUT AN EGG If you prefer decorating eggs in which the raw contents have been blown out — so that you can hang them from branches for an egg tree or display in a basket and save them year to year — here is a simple process to empty them, plus two ideas for decorating once they have been blown.
Squeeze household glue from a plastic bottle in a simple design such as zigzags or an alphabet letter on a shell that is still white or dyed in a light color. Carefully set the egg in a plastic bag with colored sand or glitter and close it
lightly in your fist, keeping locked air inside. Gently shake to coat the glue to reveal the design. Remove the egg, and slip onto a skewer through one of the holes and poke into a soft object like an egg carton to dry.
SHREDDED PAPER Brush household glue on eggshell, then press shredded paper randomly around it for a contemporary look. Let dry. *** Donna Erickson’s award-winning series “Donna’s Day” is airing on public television nationwide. Max is a super playf ul dog that loves to run really f ast and likes to go out and ex plore!
You budgeted all winter, building up the cash that would take you on vacation this summer. And now all your plans are in doubt. Now we have the coronavirus rampaging around the globe, with more cases popping up in more countries on a daily basis. Do you dare to still go on your vacation? To help make a decision about whether go, first stay current on the general facts: • Keep an eye on the advisory levels on the U.S. State Department website [travel.state.gov]. More and more countries have been added to the list of places where it warns people not to travel. • Stay updated on locations of coronavirus cases here in the U.S. Watch the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s travel notices [wwwnc. cdc.gov/travel/notices]. Watch the airlines, if you’d planned to fly. More flights to more areas are being canceled every day. Then take a close look at your individual situation: • If you’re over the age of 65 (or planning to travel with someone who is) or if there is already a health condition, consider whether travel is worth the risk of being exposed to the virus. Seniors are hit the hardest by the effect of the coronavirus and have a heightened risk of contracting it as well as pneumonia. • Do your plans involve being in crowds at tourist sites, with pathogens that are spread through the air? Are you prepared to be put in a quarantine situation if you test positive and have no symptoms? The biggest question is this: If you do go on your intended trip, could you relax and enjoy yourself? Or would you be worried the whole time about being exposed to the virus? Remember: If you cancel your summer vacation plans, you won’t be the only one to do that.

I’ve been watching “American Idol” since the very beginning and loved Kelly Clarkson. I’m so happy for her success. Whatever happened to Justin, the first runner-up with the curly hair? I thought he was so talented too. — C.F. While you may not have seen Justin Guarini much on television since he was introduced to audiences on “American Idol” in 2002, he has carved out a nice career on Broadway. For the past decade he’s starred in the Broadway and off-Broadway productions of “American Idiot,” “Romeo and Juliet” and “Wicked.” Next up for him is the new Broadway musical based on Britney Spears’ hits called “Once Upon a One More Time.” It’s a fairy tale take on the pop songs in which Guarini will play Prince Charming, with Briga Heelan as Cinderella. The show is expected to debut this spring in Chicago but be sure to check online at Chicago-Theater.com for the latest news and ticket information. *** How is celebrity chef Sandra Lee doing since her breast cancer diagnosis? Is she still in remission? — L.P. After Sandra Lee was diagnosed with a form of breast cancer called DCIS (ductal carcinoma in situ), she decided to undergo a double mastectomy rather than radiation therapy. She chose the aggressive treatment because she had a grandmother who died from stomach cancer. Lee appears to be doing fine these days with no return of the cancer. As for her personal life, she and her longtime beau, New York Gov. Mario Cuomo, split last fall, but it was reported to be amicable. *** Whatever happened to talk of a sequel to “The Devil Wears Prada”? If it happens, will the entire cast be back, including Meryl Streep? — E.E. The film “The Devil Wears Prada” was based on the bestselling book by the same name, which was based on the author Lauren Weisberger’s time working at “Vogue” maga-

zine. She wrote a sequel, “Revenge Wears Prada,” so a follow-up film is not completely inconceivable, but so far it hasn’t happened. I think all three of the female leads — Anne Hathaway, Meryl Streep and Emily Blunt — should be on board before there is any talk of a sequel, but so far I’ve only seen Blunt mention the possibility. *** Does Ken Burns still make documentaries? I haven’t seen one on PBS in years. There are so many documentaries nowadays, but he was the original. — I.J. Yes, Burns is still behind the lens making award-winning documentaries. In fact, he’s currently working on one on Muhammad Ali. And since sports are on hiatus during the coronavirus scare, Burns asked PBS to make his beloved baseball documentary available again for those stuck at home. man film “Pan,” which cost $150 and grossed only $128 million, was a flop. *** Have you discovered “Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist,” the new NBC Sunday night show? Hit your On Demand and tune into the vivacious Jane Levy. You wouldn’t think her breakout role in “The Evil Dead” (2013) would have prepared her for this show, in which computer coder Zoey Clarke magically hears people’s innermost thoughts and desires through popular songs. An impressive cast includes best supporting actress Oscar-winner Mary Steenburgen (for 1980’s “Melvin & Howard”), who also appeared in “Philadelphia” (1993), “Nixon” (1995) and “Book Club” (2018), to name just a few. Also starring are “The Gilmore Girls” and “Parenthood’s” Lauren Graham (who sings) and Peter Gallagher — “The Idolmaker” (1980), “Summer Lovers” (1982) and “Sex, Lies and Videotapes” (1989) — who spent five years on “Law & Order: SVU” and now three years of Netflix’s “Grace and Frankie.” Then there’s the dynamic young cast that will make you try and guess who’ll break into song next. Lamb is a popular dish around the world, especially at Easter. The tradition is rooted in the Jewish holiday of Passover, which celebrates the liberation of the Israelites from Egyptian slavery. With all the history associated with serving lamb at Easter, you may wonder why ham is so popular for Easter celebrations in our country. As with many foods, the reason lamb isn’t as popular in America at Easter is rooted in supply, demand and cost. Wool was a popular fabric during World War II, but as soon as the demand for wool began to wane, farmers began to raise fewer lambs, curtailing the availability of legs of lamb for sale in the spring for Easter dinners. Ham became a great alternative to lamb because farmers could cure and preserve the meat during the winter and sell it in the spring. Ham also is a popular meat because it can be prepared in so many ways. This recipe for Glazed Ham with Roasted Vegetables is perfect for Easter, and with a few minor adaptations can be combined with leftover, peeled hard-boiled Easter eggs the next morning to create my Easter Egg Hash. Happy Easter!

E HOLLYWOOD — Super Bowl champion Tom Brady is preparing for his eventual exit from football. While many sports stars move into commentary and hosting sports shows, the sixtime Super Bowl-ring holder is going Hollywood. The 42-year-old quarterback has already launched his production company, 199 Productions, to produce documentaries, feature films and television shows. The company is already developing several on-camera projects for Brady. *** Romeo told Juliet, “Deny thy father and refuse his name!” Which is what Pulitzer Prize-winning author Ronan Farrow has done. Is he the son of Woody Allen and Mia Farrow, or the product of a reuniting of Mia Farrow and her former husband Frank Sinatra? That’s one DNA test we’d like to see! Ronan Farrow launched the “Me Too” onslaught that led to the conviction of Harvey Weinstein and exposed many others in the pages of The New Yorker magazine. His family exploded apart because of the alleged accusations that Allen sexually abused Ronan’s sister and eventually married his mother’s adopted daughter. Most recently, Ronan learned his book publishing company, Hachette, was secretly publishing Allen’s memoirs despite many major publishing houses turning it down. Ronan cut ties with his publisher, and when the employees and authors of Hachette spoke up and gave ultimatums, Hachette dropped Allen’s book. *** The Walt Disney Company produced the most successful Peter Pan film, the animated 1953 classic that cost $4 million and grossed $87 million (huge back then), are now producing “Peter Pan and Wendy,” with unknowns Alexander Molony as Peter and Ever Anderson as Wendy. Anderson, 12, is the daughter of “Resident Evil” star Milla Jovovich. GLAZED HAM WITH ROASTED VEGETABLES 1 1 1 1/2 1 2 1/2
(8 to 10 pound) fully cooked bone-in smoked half ham (not spiral sliced) cup brown sugar, packed cup apricot jam cup spicy brown mustard tablespoon poultry seasoning teaspoons ground black pepper teaspoon ground cloves Roasted Vegetables:
pound fingerlings, small red potatoes or new potatoes cut into halves 1 pound slender carrots, cut into 2 inch lengths 1 bunch radishes, tops trimmed and reserved, and cut into halves 1 tablespoon salt for parboiling 3 tablespoons olive oil, plus 1 tablespoon for drizzling 2 tablespoons poultry seasoning 1 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon ground black pepper 1/2 pound of escarole, frisee, chicory or arugula leaves, or the tops of the radish leaves, if available, chopped To Prepare the Ham and Glaze: 1. Heat oven to 300 F. Place ham in a large roasting pan, cut side down. With tip of sharp knife, make long, crisscross diamond shaped cuts through the tough skin and fat of the ham, top to bottom, but not into the meat. Cover tightly with foil. Bake 1 1/2 hours.

2. In a medium bowl, whisk together sugar, jam, mustard, poultry seasoning, pepper and cloves. Transfer 1 cup of the glaze to a separate bowl; cover and refrigerate to serve with the ham later. 3. Remove foil from ham. Brush remaining glaze all over ham. Bake, uncovered, another 1 to 1 1/2 hours or until glaze is dark brown and internal temperature of ham has reached 140 F. Allow ham to rest 20 minutes before carving. Serve with reserved glaze. Serves 10-12. To Prepare the Vegetables: 1. Heat oven to 450 F. In a 7-quart saucepot, cover potatoes and carrots with cold water; add 1 tablespoon salt. Cover and heat to boiling on high. Reduce heat to maintain simmer; cook 7 minutes. Drain well and return to pot. Vegetables can be parboiled and refrigerated up to 2 days before roasting. 2. Toss potatoes, carrots and rad-
ishes with oil, poultry seasoning, and 1 teaspoon each salt and pepper; arrange in a single layer on a large rimmed baking sheet. Roast 25 minutes or until vegetables are browned and tender, stirring twice. 3. Remove vegetables from the oven; drizzle the salad greens with the remaining oil and mix the greens with the vegetables. Serve warm or at room temperature with slices of ham.
EASTER EGG HASH This Easter Egg Hash recipe is a great use for leftover hard-boiled Easter eggs and the ham and veggies from your Easter dinner. 3– 4 cups roasted vegetables and salad greens, chopped 2– 4 slices cooked ham, chopped 2 tablespoons butter 2 tablespoons vegetable oil 4 large peeled hard-boiled Easter eggs 1 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon ground black pepper 2 green onions, roots removed and discarded, green and white parts finely chopped. 1. Chop any leftover veggies and salad greens and chop up a few slices of ham to create 3 to 4 cups of hash. In a large skillet over medium-high heat, melt the butter with the oil. 2. Place the chopped roasted vegetables and ham mixture in the hot skillet. Using a spatula press the hash into an even layer in the skillet to create a crisp texture on the bottom of the hash. 3. Cook undisturbed until crunchy and browned on the bottom, about 3 to 5 minutes. Flip the hash in sections. Using a spoon, make 4 shallow indentations in the hash. Place a peeled hard-boiled egg in each indentation. Cook for 5 minutes to allow the hash to brown on the bottom and the eggs to warm through. Season with salt and pepper and sprinkle with green onions, if desired. Serves 4. *** Angela Shelf Medearis is an award-winning children’s author, culinary historian and the author of seven cookbooks. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) It’s a good time to shed any doubts about your abilities. You’ve proved yourself in the past, so why not accept that you’ll do just as well, or better, in dealing with the new challenge ahead? ARIES (March 21 to April 19) You might be upset about having to deal with problems that are no fault of your own. But you can turn the annoyance into an asset by showing how quickly and how well you can resolve them. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) The Bovine’s fondness for tidiness pays off when you untangle a situation that seems hopelessly snarled. You might later be surprised to learn who will be expressing his or her gratitude. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Although you can tackle your assignment the way you prefer, it might be a good idea to at least ask for suggestions. Who knows? One or two might even turn out to be helpful. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Make all the changes in your plans or proposals that you feel are necessary before — repeat, before — you submit them to your colleagues. You’ll come off looking more decisive that way. LEO (July 23 to August 22) You might feel a mite intimidated in a new environment, be it a job, a classroom or meeting the future in-laws. But enter with a big smile, and everyone will see you as a real take-charge Cat. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) This could be a romantic time for you if you can set aside your cynicism and let yourself believe that someone really cares. If you’re already in a relationship, expect your partner to be extra-loving.
1917 (R) — This riveting first-person war story by celebrated director Sam Mendes centers around two British lance corporals, Blake (DeanCharles Chapman) and Schofield (George MacKay), who are sent across enemy territory to halt the advance of a division of British soldiers after it’s discovered that a German retreat is a ruse. With communication lines cut, the division is almost certainly marching into oblivion if they don’t get through. In the thick of war, through the dead of night and with almost no time in which to complete this impossible feat, the two soldiers set out with singular, unwavering focus, most especially because one of the advancing soldiers is Blake’s brother. Filmed as one continuous take, the action never relents and feels very personal, almost as if you are the third member of the team. Clemency (R) — Prison warden Bernadine Williams (Alfre Woodard) dispassionately follows the letter of the law when it comes to fulfilling her Death Row duties. It’s the only way, however ineffective, to separate herself from the actions she must take. But as the latest execution hour approaches, new evidence may be coming to light for the prisoner (Aldis Hodge), while the pressure of Bernadine’s position is palpable. It’s the ultimate powerlessness of one who holds the ultimate power over another’s life. This movie is deep and dark, and full of tremendous performances, most especially Woodard, but also Hodge and Richard Schieff as the defense attorney. The Song of Names (PG-13) — On the cusp of World War II, young
SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Your suspicions might be on the mark, but unless you can prove what you assume, you need to exercise that Scorpion discretion and let events unfold without your assistance. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Be careful not to go over the top this week. Avoid overeating (especially of the wrong foods), or drinking too much, or working too hard. You can do it all, but in moderation. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) A family matter is given to you to resolve because you have the gift for bringing quarrelsome kinfolk together. But while you’re playing Dr. Phil, don’t neglect your career obligations. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Someone of importance shares your goals but disagrees with your plan to achieve them. Never mind. Defending your methods with logic and facts earns you admiration and respect. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Consider getting away, perhaps for the weekend, despite all the demands made on your time and energies. You’ll return refreshed and ready to tackle it all with your usual finesse. BORN THIS WEEK: You have a sense of honesty that makes people believe and trust in you. © 2020 King Features Synd., Inc.
Martin’s family takes in a Polish Jew immigrant boy named Dovidl — a prodigy on the violin whose family has sent him to London in order to further his musical education. He lives and thrives as a virtuoso until the day of his first major concert, when he disappears without a trace. Martin (Tim Roth) took him for a brother and never forgets. Years later, a clue emerges that sets him on a journey to discover the truth of what happened to Dovidl, and where he ended up.

Scene from “1917” DOG OF THE WEEK The Grudge (R) — A sidecar sequel in the “Grudge” family of films, 2020’s offering is a string of stories connected to 44 Reyburn Drive, which is possessed by the ghost of Kayako Saeki (a character originating in the Japanese Ju-on franchise). A young mother kills her family. A woman with dementia relies on her unrealistic but adoring husband. A police officer winds up in a sanitarium with half a face just for setting foot inside the house. A real estate agent ends up taking his work home with him. There’s a lot to work with, but somehow, this is nothing more than ho-hum horror with terrible writing. Blackball Box As early as the 17th century in America, members of fraternal clubs often voted at their meetings without paper ballots. Decisions often required a simple majority, but sometimes had to be unanimous: Just one “no” vote could scuttle a project. So, they used a blackball box instead of paper ballots. Each person was given a random number of black and white marbles. To vote no, a black marble was dropped in the box. The box had a board that covered the voter’s hand and marble so that no one could see the vote. Each marble made a noise when it was dropped, so only one marble could be used. When the box was opened, it was easy for everyone to see the number of black marbles and if the project, motion or request for membership had passed or failed. It was impossible to tell who had used a black marble. The term “blackballed” is still in use, and the box was saved as part of history. The rules are still in “Robert’s Rules of Order,” a guide to parliamentary procedure, but there are few times when only one vote, not a majority, is needed. An old blackball box used by the Odd Fellows fraternal order was sold at a Garth’s auction recently for $500. *** I have a light bulb that I have identified as an 1885 Heisler-Bernstein incandescent lamp. Does it have any value? And if so, where would I find a buyer for such a bulb? Antique and vintage light bulbs are classified as “early technology,” an area of collecting that includes electrical apparatus, astronomical devices and medical instruments. Artificial lighting is significant, since its beginning in the 1880s marked the lengthening of the workday and other changes in everyday life. Yes, there are collectors who hunt for early incandescent light bulbs, especially early carbon filament ones from the 1880s to early 1900s with intact filaments, like yours. Some early bulbs
