To Karen - A lady I met in the parking lot of Jerry’s Super Market in West Warwick (Sorry I did not get your last name and address) on Sat. 3/26/21.

I finished shopping and went back to my car and the lady in the next car called over to tell me I had a flat tire, she then asked me if I had AAA, which I do. She offered to make the call for me (I forgot my phone).

She made the call and gave them all the information that was needed. It took some time and she (Karen) stayed with me to make sure everything was OK. I will never forget her kindness to me. I really believe she was an angel here on earth because she went way out of her way to help me.

Strategies to Reduce Risk of Colon Cancer DEAR DR. ROACH: I am 70 years old. I seem to be getting more polyps (which are removed). In the past five years, I have gone from one diverticulum to extensive diverticulosis throughout my entire colon. I try to have a high-fiber diet and use psyllium in my oatmeal daily. What more can I do? Eliminate red meat entirely and go vegan? — J.D. ANSWER: Polyps in the colon confer a higher risk of colon cancer, and the more polyps a person has, the more frequently they should be screened, preferably with colonoscopy. There are some lifestyle changes most people can make to reduce the risk of polyps and of colon cancer.

Regular exercise and eating plenty of fruits and vegetables are clearly shown to reduce colon cancer risk. Fiber has long been thought to be protective, but the results of trials have been contradictory.

Among the many other possible protections to colon cancer, aspirin probably has the most benefit, but aspirin has other risks as well. People at high risk for colon cancer should discuss the use of aspirin with their doctors. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: My husband and I are both 72 and of normal weight. meats, all the fat he wants and drinks three to five beers per day. His lipid panel results came back today, and his total cholesterol is 167, his LDL is 90, his HDL is 71, and his triglycerides are 29! He has never been on statin drugs. His only med is lisinopril for slightly high blood pressure.

What I am concerned about is a CT scan done as part of a study we participated in. My husband’s results have mentioned calcification of heart arteries over the years, and the most recent says he has “SEVERE calcification of coronary arteries.” I want him to go to a cardiologist, but his family doc says that this is not a problem and as long as he keeps his blood pressure low, he can live a long time with this. He is satisfied with that answer.

I’m really anxious to hear your thoughts about him needing to see a specialist. I hope you will be able to shed some light on the calcification and the reason why it happens with such good cholesterol readings. — D.B. ANSWER: There are several important lessons in your story.

The most important is that a poor diet increases the risk for heart disease even in a person with normal or good cholesterol results. Of people with a heart attack, 21% had cholesterol levels that would not trigger treatment with a statin drug. I suspect, but can’t be sure, that your husband has blockages in his coronary arteries; the severe calcification of the coronary arteries is an indicator that it is very likely.

I would add my recommendation to yours that your husband see a cardiologist. He has a LOT of work to do at improving his diet, he is drinking more alcohol than recommended and because of the coronary artery calcification, I suspect his new cardiologist would be strongly considering medication treatment to reduce heart disease risk.

Turn your grill into a pizza maker

Some say an outdoor kitchen isn’t complete without a pizza oven. A delicious pie straight out of a blazing hot oven can be delectable when dining al fresco, but pizza also can be made right on the grill.

This recipe for “The Chicagoan” from Craig W. Priebe’s “Grilled Pizzas & Piadinas” (DK) utilizes grilled beef and sliced potatoes to give this grilled pizza a steakhouse flavor. Use a homemade dough or your favorite premade variety available at your local grocery store.

The Chicagoan Makes a 12-inch pizza 1 russet potato, peeled and sliced about 1⁄4-inch thick 3 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil 1 teaspoon salt 1⁄2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper 8 ounces top sirloin or strip steak 1⁄2 teaspoon salt Freshly ground black pepper 1 grilled pizza crust 1 tablespoon grated Parmesan 1 cup shredded mozzarella 1⁄2 cup shredded cheddar 1 cup chunky tomato sauce 1⁄2 cup thinly sliced red onions 1⁄4 cup sour cream 2 tablespoons minced fresh chives

1. Preheat the oven to 400 F. Place the sliced potato in a large bowl and toss with two tablespoons olive oil, salt and pepper. Line a baking sheet with foil and spread the slices in a single layer. Bake for about 15 minutes, until the potato is golden and tender. While still hot, loosen the slices with a spatula so they don’t stick.

2. Prepare a grill for direct cooking over high heat. Season the steak liberally on both sides with the salt and pepper. Grill the steak over the hottest part of the fire for 4 minutes. Turn and grill for 4 minutes longer, until the steak is medium-rare and well charred. Remove and let sit for 5 minutes.

Slice thinly.

3. Brush the grilled side of the pizza crust with the remaining one tablespoon olive oil and dust with the Parmesan. Sprinkle the mozzarella and cheddar on top. Drop spoonfuls of the chunky tomato sauce onto the pizza. Top with the potato, red onion and the steak.

4. Grill the pizza with indirect heat. If your grill is still hot, move coals to one side or turn off one burner and allow the pizza to cook on the side without a direct flame. Grill the pizza for 5 to 8 minutes, or until the crust is crisp and brown. The bottom may have a few black spots from charring.

Optional: Broil the cooked pizza in the oven for 1 to 2 minutes more to caramelize the top.

5. Before serving, drop teaspoons of the sour cream onto the pizza, and garnish with the fresh chives.

Grilling the crust To grill a pizza crust for this recipe, roll out to a 12-inch circle and place on a cookie sheet. Adjust the grill to reach a temperature of 400 F. Slide the dough onto the grill. The dough should take about 3 minutes to cook. Watch for bubbles.

The crust will be soft at first and tear easily. To check doneness, lift the underside. It should be an even light brown with brown grill marks.

Pick up the crust using tongs and place it on your cookie sheet. Flip it over so the grilled side is face up. This browned side becomes the top of your pizza.

If you have diabetes, you are not more likely to get COVID-19 compared with the general population. However, it has been shown that COVID-19 can cause more severe symptoms and complications in people who have diabetes.

To this point, I would highly recommend that everyone who has diabetes obtain one of the COVID-19 vaccines which are currently available. All of the clinical vaccine trials had patients with diabetes and they were all deemed to be safe for them. There is also no advantage in getting one vaccine over another. It is important to stay hydrated and rest plenty after getting the vaccine. It is possible that glucose levels may become slightly more elevated for 24 to 48 hours following the injection but this is to be ex-

pected and not of any concern unless this persists. The vaccine has not been shown to interact with any of the diabetes medications including insulin.

It is however recommended that insulin injections, glucose sensor applications or insulin pump infusion sets avoid the vaccine administration site for a number of days afterwards.

These are some general tips for managing diabetes during the pandemic. Please refer to the piece written by RD CDE Lauren Talbert below with regards to dietary tips. The other key things which I would like to recommend are staying relaxed and establishing an exercise routine at home. Because stress contributes to poor diabetes control, one way to minimize this is to incorporate regular breathing exercises as

To cut back on added sugars, drink more water and less sugary beverages. Also, when choosing a snack, reach for a piece of fruit and a handful of nuts instead of a sugary bar or cookie. Not only will you limit the amount of added sugar, this snack will provide fiber and lean protein to keep your energy levels up.

The main message when it comes to nutrition is to keep it simple. When you plan your meals and snacks around fiber and lean protein rich foods the healthy benefits will follow.

Living with diabetes during the COVID-19 pandemic

When you have diabetes, figuring out what to eat or avoid can be confusing. During this pandemic, you may be motivated to make healthier choices with a goal to improve your overall health. With so many choices at the grocery store, deciding what to purchase can seem overwhelming. Registered dietitian and diabetes educator Lauren Talbert provides three simple tips to eating healthy with diabetes.

The first tip is to focus on fiber. Fiber is found in whole grains, legumes (beans, peas and lentils), fruits and nuts. Fiber slows the absorption of carbohydrates (sugar) and therefore helps to prevent spikes in blood sugar after eating. Fiber rich foods keep you feeling fuller longer helping to control hunger. To eat more fiber switch from processed grains

like white bread or white rice to whole grains such as whole wheat bread, brown rice or quinoa. Also experiment with eating more legumes, add beans and lentils to salads or soups.

If you haven’t yet tried legume pasta (made from chickpeas or lentils), pick a box up during your next grocery shop.

The second tip is to choose lean protein rich foods which include chicken, turkey, fish, eggs, low-fat dairy, legumes and nuts. Red and processed meats including beef, pork, lamb, sausage and deli meats are often high in unhealthy saturated fats. It is important to include protein at all meals and snacks to better manage post meal blood sugars as protein takes longer to digest and also helps to prevent spikes in blood sugars after eating.

Understanding asthma as allergy season returns

The arrival of spring and summer is typically welcomed with open arms.

Warm air, green grass, colorful flowers, and, of course, vacations are just a few of the many reasons to celebrate spring and summer.

Spring and summer also marks the return of allergy season. According to the American College of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology, allergies are the sixth leading cause of chronic illness in the United States. A 2017 survey found that 27 percent of Canadians age 12 and older reported having allergies.

For many people, allergies are a minor seasonal nuisance that are overcome by taking over-the-counter medications or staying indoors on days when allergen levels are especially high. But the World Allergy Organization notes that a history of allergies is a known risk factor for developing asthma. In fact, Statistics Canada reports that, among people diagnosed with allergies, 63 percent also reported having asthma.

What is asthma?

The National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute defines asthma as a chronic condition that affects airways in the lungs. The airways carry air in and out of the lungs, and when people have asthma, these airways can become inflamed and narrow, compromising a person’s ability to breathe.

What are the symptoms of asthma?

The ACCAI notes that it can be hard to recognize symptoms of asthma in very young children. That’s because the bronchial tubes in infants, toddlers and preschool-aged youngsters are already small and narrow. Head colds, chest colds and other illnesses may further narrow these airways. So symptoms of asthma could be mistakenly associated
