Flying High on Foxwood’s Highflyer Zipline

It was with great anticipation and a bit of anxiety that I rode the elevator to the 30th floor of Foxwood’s Fox Tower and climbed three more stories to reach the roof of the majestic building.

I was participating in a press preview and ribbon cutting ceremony high atop the Fox Tower, where the Mashantucket Chairman, Rodney Butler and other dignitaries cut the ribbon to Foxwoods newest attraction.

Awaiting me was an adrenaline-pumping adventure that propelled me over a mile at speeds reaching 60 miles an hour, soaring over the woodlands of the Mashantucket Pequot Reservation down to the Mashantucket Pequot Museum and Research Center.

The Highflyer is an engineering marvel, a part of Foxwood’s long-term development plan to provide guests with a new and exciting outdoor adventure experience, as the resort casino looks for new ways to offer unique experiences beyond the traditional gaming.

I checked in at the Highflyer desk, adjacent to the Fox Tower Garage Rotunda, where I signed a waiver, agreeing to follow various safety rules like “don’t ride when drunk”, “carry nothing in your pockets”, and be over 65 pounds and under 300, and no taller that 6’7”.

I was escorted to the HighFlyer Flight School where safety rules were explained and I was fitted into my harness. Any loose articles are placed in a bag attached to your harness.

Since you need to hold on for the entire ride, you can’t bring a camera or phone, but a photographer (or your companion) is at the landing spot to capture your trip.

Standing at the top of the tower and looking down at the acres of woodland is an awesome experience.

The staff secures you in your seat, hooks you up, provides last minute instructions, and off you go. There are four lines, and it is interesting to watch those beside you. The wind hits your face as you glide smoothly down the 3,750 feet to land smoothly on the ground.

The man next to me from Fox News had his photographer on the ground recording the trip for the evening news. His ride stopped short of the landing spot and he had to be pulled a few feet with a long pole. No danger, just embarrassment.

The zipline adventure is open daily from noon to 6:00 p.m. In the summer, the hours will be extended.

Cost is $69 for the once-in-a-lifetime experience.

American Pickers to film in RI Mike Wolfe, Frank Fritz, and their team are excited to return to Rhode Island. They plan to film episodes of the hit series American Pickers throughout the region in June.

Get Dirty Gardening enthusiasts may have been thinking about their landscape plans throughout the winter, eager to once again get their hands dirty with soil.

Whether a home gardener is making preparations for edible crops or beautiful flowers, he or she must take time to make the soil amenable to planting. To establish hearty, durable plants, gardeners can focus on three main areas: addressing soil composition, cultivating and adding nutrients.

Soil composition Many gardeners prefer growing a variety of plants in their gardens. Such an approach requires taking inventory of the type of soil in oneÕs garden and making the necessary modifications so that the types of vegetables, herbs, shrubs, or flowers that will be planted can grow in strongly. In fact, according to the plant company Proven Winners, the most important step to developing good roots is preparing the soil.

Take a sample of the soil and examine it to see what is present. If the soil is too full of clay, too sandy, too dense, or too loose, that can lead to problems where plants cannot grow in strong. Work with a garden center to add the right soil amendments to make a rich soil. This may include organic compost or manure, which will also add nutrients to the soil.

Preparing garden beds for spring and beyond

Cultivation Cultivating the soil can involve different steps. Removal of weeds, errant rocks, roots, and other items will help prepare the soil. Mother Earth News suggests working on garden soil when the soil is damp but never wet; otherwise, garden soil can become messy and clumpy. Use a digging fork or shovel to lightly turn the soil when itÕs mostly dry. Gentle tillings also can open up the soil to incorporate the nutritional amendments and relieve compaction that likely occurred from freezing temps and snow pressure. Tilling also helps with drainage and oxygen delivery to roots.

The DIY Network suggests turning over soil at a depth of 12 inches to work the soil Ă‘ about the length of a shovel spade. However, the resource Earth Easy says that existing garden beds have a complex soil ecosystem and simply top-dressing with compost or manure can be enough preparation for planting. Gardeners can experiment with the methods that work best for their gardens.

Nutrition Testing the pH and the levels of certain nutrients in the soil, namely nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium, will give gardeners an idea of other soil additions that may be needed. Soils with a pH below 6.2 often

can benefit from the addition of lime several weeks before planting. Soil tests will determine just how much fertilizer to add to the soil. Complete fertilizers will have equal amounts of nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium. Individual fertilizers can amend the soil with only these nutritional elements that are needed.

Top-dressing empty beds with a layer of mulch or compost can prevent weed growth and preserve moisture until it is time to plant. If existing shrubs or plants are in garden beds, use more care so as not to disturb roots or dig too deeply.

Preparing garden beds takes some effort initially, but can be well worth the work when plants flourish throughout the growing season.

Countering Facebook trolls By now you’ve heard that Cambridge Analytica hacked into the Facebook accounts of some 50 million Americans.

After gaining access to their private information, Cambridge profiled them using advanced data mining techniques.

Then they manipulated them with propaganda disguised as social messages and trending topics. The essence of this manipulation is not new; only the scope and sophistication are notable. Nielsen has been segmenting target audiences based on lifestyles for decades using its Prizm software.

What I found particularly disturbing is this. Even if you didn’t take the bait of their free personality tests (or whatever, and I never did), you were at risk. If anyone of your FB friends took the tests (and some did), they provided the trolls with access to your FB account via their friends network. Good news for all of us. I have a way for Facebook users to fight back against this profiling.

Shortly after I retired, I blogged about the ads that appeared in browser windows and emails. I was on the Internet more often and that behavior apparently was driving the ad content. Over time, companies seemed to refine their algorithms to better target my surfing.

(Maybe they started using Prizm.) In an effort to take control of my browser screens, I Googled things that I would enjoy looking at and bookmarked those pages. I visited each of the sites I marked just before I shut down my browser each day, moving them up in the ad hierarchy. In short, I controlled many of my ads.

This concept can easily be modified to confuse the trolls snooping through our Facebook pages. Here’s how it will work. For every post you make or meme you share that skews liberal or conservative, make an equally strong post that skews the other way. “I love Hillary (still)!” but “Hillary really is crooked.”

“Trump is the best thing since sliced bread!” except that “Trump is a moron (still).”

Apply this same technique to any posts about food. “Just found a yummy | PrimeTime

gluten-free recipe for muffins!” followed by “Try this easy-to-bake whole wheat bread from my mother’s recipe box.”

“I’m having great success with the paleo diet.” And then “To hell with those cavemen; give me death-by-chocolate cake any day.” You get the idea.

This can even work to confuse shopping bots. Post photos of petite, size 4, figure-hugging styles side by side with plus size tunics and caftans. Drive the software really crazy by giving a phony birthdate and then celebrating it with a birthstone ring from an entirely different month. Here’s your chance to pick the horoscope sign you wish you were born under.

I encourage you to get really creative with your posts. Have fun with them.

Share a diagnosis from your psychotherapist about your supposed schizophrenia. “Dr. Splitzenmensa identified yet another personality in our last session. He said that makes seven now.

Can’t wait to see who I’ll be at next week’s appointment.”

Just imagine how frustrated the analysts will be trying to figure out what’s going on with you. Are you an outlier?

Or did their programmers make a fatal miscalculation in their code? Is your FB-sourced record the only one that’s so messed up? Or are they at risk of providing flawed recommendations to their most lucrative clients?

I wish I could be a fly on the wall while the tech geniuses behind the Facebook manipulation try to debug their software. Revenge is sweet. Or it’s sour.

And it’s best served cold. Or hot.

Alzheimer’s Association to host Advocacy Day Alongside advocates, the Alzheimer’s Association, Rhode Island Chapter will host an Advocacy Day at the state capitol on Tuesday, May 8, to discuss Alzheimer’s disease and its impact on Rhode Island. According to the Alzheimer’s Association 2017 Alzheimer’s Disease Facts & Figures report, there are 23,000 people living with Alzheimer’s and 53,000 Alzheimer’s caregivers in Rhode Island.

The Alzheimer’s Association Advocacy Day will provide opportunities for advocates to meet face-toface with their state elected officials. Advocates will share their personal stories of how Alzheimer’s has impacted their lives with state policymakers. Advocates will also have a chance to hear and update on Rhode Island’s State Plan to address Alzheimer’s disease from Lieutenant Governor Daniel McKee. “Our federal legislators are increasingly making research, care and support for Alzheimer’s disease a priority; from the development of the National Alzheimer’s Plan in 2012 to the passage of a $400 million increase in research funding through the passage of the 2017 federal budget,” said Donna McGowan, Executive Director of the Alzheimer’s Association, Rhode Island Chapter. “We are confident our state legislators will see the significance of maintaining and improving fundamental services for our most vulnerable population in Rhode Island as well. State Advocacy Days are critical opportunities for individuals and families to share their stories of how this disease affects

them. These personal testimonies allow law makers to see firsthand the need for ongoing supports and services in Rhode Island.”

egg whites, lightly beaten tablespoons finely chopped fresh parsley tablespoons finely chopped fresh basil tablespoons finely chopped fresh chives salt, to taste (optional) fresh herb sprigs, for garnish (optional)

Place potatoes in large pan. Cover with water. Bring to boil and cook, uncovered, 3 minutes. Remove from heat. Cover and let stand about 10 minutes, or until potatoes are tender. Drain well.

In deep, 10-inch nonstick skillet over medium heat, heat oil. Add onion and garlic. Cook about 8 minutes, stirring occasionally. Add potatoes and cook 5 minutes.

Combine whole eggs and egg whites. Stir in parsley, basil and chives. Season with salt, to taste, if desired.

Pour mixture over potatoes in hot skillet. Reduce heat and cook, uncovered, about 10 minutes, or until bottom of omelet is golden.

If desired, brown top under toaster oven. Garnish with fresh herb sprigs, if desired.

According to the Guinness Book of World Records, the tallest sunflower on record was more than 7 meters high.

Carrots in the grocery store are most often orange, but white and yellow varieties come from Europe and purple carrots are available in the Middle East.

Cinnamon can be used as a natural fungicide.

wHAT DO YOU FINK?

Roommates We started out on the Old Campus: Wright Hall, guarded by twin bronze lions at its entryway. We were assigned four freshmen, two to a bed-chamber plus French windows with an upholstered seat and a splendid view...and a grand salon with a working fireplace. “Jim” was given a single room upstairs, right next door to that of another loner, a survivor of the Warsaw Ghetto! (They used to wrestle amiably in the corridor.) Jim was what we now label a “person of color.” The then polite term was “Negro.” He would often come down the staircase to spend conversational time with me.

We were both on scholarship: we had what were called “bursary” responsibilities. He was the court photographer: he was supposed to study the body profiles, full-length, of all incoming classmates, in the gym, to make sure we all knew how to stand straight, with no sway-back “lordosis.”

My job was to pour the sherry at professors’ parties. I would bring the near-empty bottles back to our rooms and sit up late discussing all manner of things with Jim. When it was time to move along to sophomore quarters, we chose each other. I guess we were co-outsiders with a similar sense of ironic humor. We drank our wines before the fire and shared our stories. That year, I never visited his homestead in Springfield, Massachusetts; he did not visit my house and family in Providence. We did, however, hitch,”thumb” to New York to stay with my aunt Lillian in Manhattan who put us up gladly, and secretly.

I also gathered a group of other students with various majors in “Silliman College” (one of the residential castles at Yale) including a fellow named “Tom” who expected to go on to medical school in his native Ohio. I took a biology elective and rescued the poor victims about to be “pitted,” sacrificed for anatomical study by future surgeons. All kinds of creatures, from jars of one-celled protozoa to lab tins of frogs and fetal unborn pigs. I could not bear to end the lives of such sacred beings or to carve up their corpses, and instead rescued what I could among the living in my pocket or briefcase to raise in my dormitory parlor. On any weekend break en route to Providence for a weekend, I would smuggle the chattering chicks or the restless mice or the frogs into my parents’ place...or abandon them on neighbors’ stoops (they always knew it was “Nature Boy” me who had done this noble or ignoble deed)...until, one time... something dreadful happened before I could repeat this mission of mercy. I came back from the matinee of a movie---perhaps it was “Lili”?---to find all my chickens/roosters dead! Who would do such a dastardly deed? None other than my “friend” Tom! He had poisoned them! Not for any particular purpose or reason, but for some mysterious motive. I had no idea how they had died...untiil a year afterward.

I chose to spend my junior year at the Sorbonne, a perfectly respectable escape from New Haven’s realm, via the Mauretania, an ocean away from my fellow sons of Eli, my “brothers” until 1955, to learn another language and another philosophy. Especially for an English major with a special interest in linguistics and an innocent taste for French culture as I then youthfully envisioned and imagined it.

When I returned for our senior year, Jim had collected other classmates, but we also had each other as close comrades in all things. Once, on a double date, we found ourselves in a Manhattan apartment with two young women...and, plus, a pigeon that had flown in via an open window. Jim panicked, it turned out he had a phobia about birds---more info about this to follow shortly in this chronicle. Not me, this quirk. I simply took a broom, teased the dove onto the flat straw tip, and liberated it through its port of entry, no problem. Now, while I would drag Jim to fancy French films at the art cinema, he would in turn bring me as his guest to ROTC meetings about the Air Force. Despite his fear of flying feathers, he was deeply attracted to aviation, and that was to be his fame and fortune, his calling and vocation.

He there made a name for himself and, at our occasional reunions, 10th or 25th, or 50th, or beyond, he would fill me in on some spectacular details of his career in courage. How they gave him a knife and a chum and asked the duo to spend a week with no food, as preparation for possible isolation on an island anywhere upon the planet. “What did you eat?” “We found and cooked a porcupine. We had no matches, we made do.” “How did it taste?” “Vile, but we were hungry and we got it down.”

Jim also told me something else. “Tom’s wife died recently. I truly believe he murdered her!” Now, Jim and I had a wonderful rapport and relationship. He always hugged, and even kissed, me when we bade each other good-bye after a reunion. And I recall that when I introduced him to one of the Yale presidents...(he often liked me to made a connection before he spoke to someone he hadn’t yet contacted...) he would return to our table with tears in his eyes. Yale had meant a very great deal to him. He resented nevertheless being asked to guide Eartha Kitt, or the cover girl of Ebony magazine, or the daughter of the secretary general of the United Nations, Ralph Bunche, or any other distinguished lady of color who had been invited to campus, because he felt he was at Yale solely as a token to be used.

Maybe that was why he preferred to drink the dregs of the port or the beaujolais to digging into the texts of the books assigned for his classes.

Many years, decades, even a major millennium, has gone by. Yes, we stay in touch. I was away when his wife, a fair and charming former stewardess and a blonde beauty, had died of cancer, leaving him to take care of their daughter, who had Down’s syndrome. But he calls me ever so often, and I dial his number to share events of my life. We love each other, in our way. He came to my Providence lifelong house and visited my office and the classes I teach.

Like me, he has taken on an interest in his ancestry. He is descended not only from slaves but from their “owners” and has found a member of the KKK--yes, the infamous Klan!-- who is his long-lost cousin!

I don’t think any two people have everything in common, not even identical twins. From my English major I retain a few lines from the Bard: “The friends thou has, and their adoption tried, grapple them to thy soul with hoops of steel!”

So said Polonius In “Hamlet” and so say I about my friend Jim!

Honor Flight 25 veterans – 12 World War II, 12 Korean War and one Vietnam War veteran were greeted by police and fire honor guards, friends, family, scouts and the bagpipe and drum corps in their kilts and boots on April 7 at Green Airport.

The Honor Flight was sponsored by National Grid. It was the 17th flight run by the Rhode Island Association of Fire Chiefs. The IBEW has sponsored six or seven flights. Local 2323 is sponsoring the next flight on June 2. A third flight is planned for this year on Sept. 15.

Roberta Mudge Humble, a retired CCRI professor, served as guardian for Ernie Cassis, 93, a WWII Navy veteran. The two serve on the Westerly Armory Restoration, Inc., which Humble founded and remains president of.
