Save Twice with the Saver’s Credit If you are a low-to-moderate income worker, you can take steps now to save two ways for the same amount. With the saver’s credit you can save for your retirement and save on your taxes with a special tax credit.

Here are six tips you should know about this credit:

1. Save for retirement. The formal name of the saver’s credit is the

retirement savings contributions credit. You may be able to claim this tax credit in addition to any other tax savings that also apply. The saver’s credit helps offset part of the first $2,000 you voluntarily save for your retirement. This includes amounts you contribute to IRAs, 401(k) plans and similar workplace plans.

2. Save on taxes. The saver’s credit can increase your refund or reduce

the tax you owe. The maximum credit is $1,000 or $2,000 for married couples. The credit you receive is often much less, due in part because of the deductions and other credits you may claim.

3. Income limits. Income limits vary based on your filing status. You may be able to claim the saver’s credit if you’re a:

• Married couple filing jointly with income up to $62,000 in 2017 or $63,000 in 2018.

• Head of Household with income up to $46,500 in 2017 or $47,250 in 2018.

• Married person filing separately or single with income up to $31,000 in 2017 or $31,500 in 2018.

4. When to contribute. If you’re eligible you still have time to con-

tribute and get the saver’s credit on your 2017 tax return. You have until April 17, 2018, to set up a new IRA or add money to an existing IRA for 2017. If you can’t set aside money for 2017 you may want to schedule your 2018 contributions soon so your employer can begin withholding them in January.

5. Other special rules that apply to the credit include: • You must be at least 18 years of age.

• You can’t have been a full-time student in 2017.

• Another person can’t claim you as a dependent on their tax return.

6. Visit IRS.gov. You figure your credit amount based on your filing status, adjusted gross income, tax liability and the amount of your qualified contribution. Other rules also apply. For more information visit IRS.gov.

Closing the Financial Gap for a New Generation of Retirees

Retirement has become a bit more complicated in recent years.

Retirees can no longer rely on just Social Security, employer-sponsored retirement plans, and personal savings— what’s known as the “three-legged stool� of retirement planning.

Many of today’s retirees simply do not have the employer-sponsored plans their parents did, and therefore need to rely more closely on personal savings and other assets to close the gap and meet their financial needs. Additionally, with increased longevity and medical expenses, planning for the unknown is difficult. That’s why Home Equity Conversion Mortgages (HECMs) are growing in popularity.

If you’re 62 or older, a HECM can help you tap into the equity of your existing home and turn it into cash that can be used today, or a line of credit that will be there when you need it. It also can help to preserve invested assets, leaving them intact to continue earning for you.

Get additional funds to help cover unexpected medical expenses, or supplement your income? A HECM can help by eliminating your existing mortgage payment and freeing up cash to use for those purposes and others as well. (As the homeowner, you’d remain responsible for property taxes, homeowners insurance, and property maintenance. A HECM is a home-secured debt payable upon default or a maturity event.)

You can receive your loan funds as a lump sum, a line of credit, a monthly payment, or any combination of these.

Online Banking Safety Tips

In the digital era, many errands that once required leaving the house can be conducted from the comforts of home. Groceries can be ordered online and delivered to consumers’ doorsteps, while bills can be paid online, saving men and women from having to drive to their nearby post office.

Online banking has revolutionized the way people manage their money. Investors can buy or sell stocks with the click of a mouse, and money can be moved across accounts just as easily and instantly. Many consumers now even do their banking on their mobile phones. In fact, a 2016 study from the Federal Reserve found that 67 percent of millennials use mobile banking, suggesting that mobile banking is the wave of the future.

While online or mobile banking makes it easy for consumers to manage their money, it’s also potentially much riskier than in-person banking at the bank. Unseen hackers and thieves are lurking online and in places where Wi-Fi is open and free, so online and mobile banking enthusiasts must exercise caution when accessing their accounts.

• Sign up for two-factor authentication. Some banks and credit card companies now provide two-factor authentication, and some may even insist their customers use it. Two-factor authentication requires two forms of verification before users can log into their accounts. The first might be the traditional username and password, while the second might be a temporary code texted or emailed to users after they log into their accounts. Some consumers may feel two-factor authentication is tedious and slow, but it’s an effective safety measure that should only delay online or mobile banking by a few seconds.

• Use only secure network connections. Public Wi-Fi can be convenient, but consumers should never use such connections to do their online or mobile banking. • Monitor credit scores. Consumers have the right to one free credit report each year, but many credit card companies now update customers regarding their credit scores once per month. Consumers many need to sign up to take advantage of this service, but doing so is typically free. If credit scores suddenly dip unexpectedly and without reason, consumers may have been victimized by identity theft and can then take the necessary course of action to address the issue.

A review of a buyer transaction should include the type of property they are looking for – single family home, condominium, multi-family or investment property. The review should also include the location, size of structure and lot, budget, and the type of financing that works best for their situation.

A buyer should have a pre-approval prior to beginning their search. This will allow the buyer, their realtor, and their prospective seller to be comfortable that the showing is valid, and there is opportunity for a sale.

There are many types of loan products to suit each buyer’s individual needs, from first time buyers and veterans, to investors and seniors downsizing to a simplified lifestyle. The right financing for the specific situation is the most important part of the purchase process. A buyer may acquire their financing through a traditional bank, credit union, federal institutions, mortgage lender or private party financing.

Humorous Child-Raising Advice in a Baby Boomer World

ou never know what a person is going through until you walk a mile in their shoes. And after 37 years maintaining a private practice in foot and ankle care at the Atwood Medical Center in Johnston, Michael A. Battey has seen his fair share of shoes.

But Battey’s now taking his experiences as a father and parent to the next step with his first of two new books, ‘The Parent Trap Columns, Vol. I: Humorous Child-Raising Advice in a Baby Boomer World.’

For nearly eight years from 2005 until 2012, Battey wrote a newspaper column called The Parent Trap, which primarily ran in the East Greenwich Pendulum, but also appeared in Kent County and the other sister weekly papers of the Southern Rhode Island Newspapers. Just released in September, his first publication contains more than 100 of Battey’s columns from that time which focus on humorous and insightful observations on contemporary teen

parenting.

Battey, who was born and raised in Rhode Island and now lives in East Greenwich, received degrees from the University of Rhode Island and the Temple University School of Podiatric Medicine. He’s also a faculty member at the Brown University Alpert Medical School.

Saying that he has always had a “writing bug,” Battey’s writing career first began when he wrote a letter to the editor in East Greenwich about a college consulting service that would help students with applications to certain universities. The editor then called him and asked him to write a regular column for the paper. He then decided that he could mine funny and insightful stories from raising his own three children.

His oldest daughter, Alexa, is now 30, and Battey said that she was the focus of many of his articles. His son Michael, 25, is in California now working on his

master’s degree.

Battey’s youngest child, Jordan, is 21 and now in her fourth year of college in Massachusetts.

“The kids came into our world a little differently.

We were married for 12 years before we had kids. We married 42 years ago, I was 22 and my wife, Susan, was 20, that was the average age to get married.” said Battey. “We tried to have a child and nothing worked, we went to fertility clinics and all this stuff and nothing clicked, and we finally adopted our oldest daughter.”

Battey said that, for their second child Michael, medical science had caught up and an In Vetro attempt was successful.

“Then after 20 years of marriage we got a total surprise, a natural pregnancy with our daughter Jordan,” said Battey. “Each of them can claim their own unique birth background and experiences.”

He said these experiences helped provide him with a unique perspective on parenting which he felt could be shared with a wider audience.

“My intent with the column was not to preach, but judge maybe, because I make mistakes every hour of every day like we all do, and parenting is a lot of trial and error,” said Battey. “But I started thinking that kids nowadays, a lot of things are the same. It’s really not so much the kids that have changed, it’s the parents. Parents were byproducts of a ‘me generation.’”

He said he grew up in an era of Woodstock and the 70s, filled with promiscuity. “Not that I minded” he joked. He said that he found that the focus of that generation “became less about other people and more about you.”

“I think regard for society suffered a little bit because it was okay to do your own thing. So what lessons do we send to kids now?” said Battey. He compared previous generations as mass savers to

those today that seem to focus on mass consumerism.

“For many it’s a tough choice at that moment, and you love your kids and want to give them things, so you default by just giving in and caving, and giving kids all this stuff,” he said. “That whole entitlement philosophy I think is potentially harmful because these kids get out of college and live this great lifestyle, and what they are bringing in and many have a difficult time getting a job. For many it’s an adaptation.”

Battey believes that his tongue in cheek book is appropriate for parents and grandparents based on the overwhelming feedback he’s received from his popular column.

“So many people feel that it’s something that they can relate to, it seems that the chapters and columns resonate with people,” he said. “They are quick reads, you can pick it up and read one or two, put it down and then the next day pick it up again. A lot of them are humorous and people feel entertained. I think it resonates with them as parents and they’re not being preached to and told this is a better way, but it reminds them to look in the mirror and laugh and have a sense of humor about parenting.”

Enjoying the Arts on a Budget The arts are alive and well in Rhode Island, and there are many opportunities to enjoy them on a limited budget.

Few of us can afford the price of a Broadway theatre ticket, plus the cost of transportation, hotel, and dining in the Big Apple.

If you don’t mind waiting a year or two, most of the blockbuster hits make it to Providence, where the ticket prices are considerably less. Check out the options at the Providence Performing Arts Center. Better yet, if you are physically able and have the time, consider ushering at the theatre.

PPAC uses mostly senior citizens as ushers, giving them the opportunity to see the best of Broadway and many other star performances.

You do need to commit to a certain number of performances each year and for each show, but it is worth it.

Trinity Rep. also offers seniors a chance to volunteer in the upstairs and downstairs theatre. There is less walking and climbing downstairs. They also have reduced pricing for certain shows.

Community Theatre

Community theatres depend on volunteers for their productions, both as ushers and behind-the-scenes.

Woonsocket’s Stadium Theatre was not only saved by dedicated volunteers who contributed countless hours to help refurbish the old vaudeville house, but also to keep it operating a busy schedule.

Ushers, concessioners, greeters, and behind the scene workers keep the theatre operating and the ticket prices within reach of the average family.

Check out the theatres in your community. From small theatres in northern Rhode Island to the Courthouse in Kingston, the Odeum in East Greenwich, Community Players in Pawtucket, the Park in Cranston, and many others, senior volunteers are the heart and soul of the operation.

Barker Playhouse (The Players) is the longest running little theatre in the country. They are technically a “membership organization”. People pay a very modest fee to join and receive tickets to all of the productions. In addition, they are invited to special events, cast parties, and readings. They are also invited to participate in everything from building sets, making costumes and even acting.

Many theatres offer significant reduced pricing to seniors.

Providence’s Wilbury Theatre has a $28 senior price, and Cranston’s Epic Theatre charges seniors $15.

If movies are your interest, Showcase Cinemas attracts seniors on Wednesdays with reduced prices on tickets, pop corn and soda.

Use the internet, local papers and magazines to keep abreast of the many special events taking place at local colleges and universities, many free or at a low cost.

Have you ever gone to see your grandchild in a high school play? Cranston and Warwick High Schools have excellent theatre programs and produce some amazing plays and musicals.

Summertime concerts at Garden City, Waterfire, neighborhood celebrations and other local events around Rhode Island bring ina number of excellent musical groups.

Stay informed, and take advantage of the great arts and entertainment that Rhode Island has to offer.

Rhode Island College

Colleges and universities offer wonderful opportunities for seniors to enjoy quality arts and entertainment. Rhode Island College is a perfect example, offering free and low cost concerts, theatre, dance, art, and lectures.

Their Mainstage Theatre provides for many theatre majors to gain valuable experience.

Coming February 22-25 and March 2-4, they will present Mark Medoff’s Children of a Lesser God followed by Beauty and the Beast April 12-15.

The Performing Arts Series features “globalFEST,” The New Golden Age of Latin Music on February 7 at 7:30 p.m. in the Auditorium at Roberts Hall, followed by the Muir String Quartet featuring guest artist, flutist Carol Wincenc on February 12 at 7:30 in Sapinsley Hall.

Dublin Irish Dance comes to Roberts Hall on March 13 at 7:30 p.m., followed by the Brubeck Brothers Quartet (Dave’s sons) on March 21 at 7:30 in the Forman Theatre. Ticket prices for seniors are $30. Call 456-8144 for reservations.

On April 28 of 2018, Judith Stillman and Friends from the Rhode Island Philharmonic Orchestra will perform an entertaining concert titled “Boldly Beethoven” The concert is at 1:00 p.m. and again at 8:00 p.m. at Sapinsley Hall. The 1:00 p.m. concert is attended by a number of Assisted Living facilities. If your residence is not scheduled to attend, talk to your Social Director. The college asks for a $10 donation, but everyone is welcome.

RIC’s faculty includes world class artists like pianist Judith Stillman, Saxophonist Greg Abate, actor Robert Colonna and others.

Vatsana joins Pawtuxet Village restaurant review

Cranston’s Pawtuxet Village just added another reason to think locally when choosing a place to dine or take out. Vatsana has opened next to Shastea at 2168 Broad Street, in the village, offering quality, authentic Thai and Sushi in an intimate setting.

The building previously housed a Chinese restaurant, and before that a variety of markets and delis. Hopefully, Vatsana will prosper and be around for a long time.

The menu is carefully constructed to offer basic Thai cuisine in a variety of categories.

“Noodles & Rice” lists the choices of Tofu ($9.50), Chicken/Beef/Pork ($11.50) and Shrimp $(12.50).

Diners then have seven choices, including Pad Thai, Pad See Ew, Pad Kee Mow, Lad Na, and three fried rice dishes.

The Coconut Curry dishes are served with jasmine rice, and include red, green, yellow, Massaman and Panang styles.

Joyce was drawn to the Meat & Vegetables list, choosing Shrimp with ginger, bell peppers, onion and mushrooms in chili pasta sauce. ($12.95) The delicious sauce mixed perfectly with the jasmine rice.

In addition to the choices of tofu, chicken/beef/pork/shrimp, and shrimp for $14.95 you can have duck, salmon or tilapia.

I chose an entrée-size salad called Yum Seafood, which was Thai style ceviche and included shrimp, squid, scallop and fish mixed with fresh lime juice, lemongrass, peppers, and red onion. ($14.95) It was the best, and most original, ceviche I have ever tasted.

There are a number of house specials, including duck, sesame beef, crispy pork, and mango coconut curry, ranging in price from $9.95 to $16.95.

The food is fresh, with a colorful presentation, served with a smile by helpful waitpersons who will explain some of the strange Thai words.

The restaurant is BYO, but the liquor store on the corner offers a 10% discount for Vatsana customers.

Vatsana is open Sunday through Friday, excluding Wednesday, when they take the day off, from 11:30 a.m. to 9:00 p.m., and Saturday from 4-10 p.m. Call 781-1888 for reservations, information, or take out.

Reflections Janus, the two-faced Roman god or idol, and the title of a classic movie collection: it’s also the source name of the sun-calendar January, with one face looking forward and the other visage of the double-countenance staring backward. So: it gives me the chance to sum up the + and the - of 2017, while eagerly gazing forward toward the prospects for tomorrow. I’ll flip through the pages of my engagement-booklet reminders of the seasons past.

I find the names of friends who met me at various cafes for conversations. Sy and George and Karen and Winnie, etc. etc. The journeys: to Washington, D.C., and to West Palm Beach, twice in 2017. My special pleasure in D.C. was holding my newborn grand-daughter “Noa” and studying the expressions on her Buddha-like round face. She studied me quietly and then produced a solemn smile. If her devoted mom took a brief break, she designed a look of anxiety and disapproval and then a triumphant grin of greeting especially as she welcomed her beloved mommy with total victory and relief.

My treat in Florida was a brief swim in the very-deep blue sea, all alone, and of course also the generous hospitality of Joel and Naomi and Joan and Morris at “Frenchman’s Creek,” a strange paradise like a dream of a fallen Eden. I don’t play golf, but I pick up a lost ball and bounce it cheerfully and symbolically. Even thoughtfully. And we got home safe and sound, despite my traveler’s anxieties. I see among the pages of my scribbled tiny “diary” the titles of some special movies-”Bombshell” and “Jane” and note likewise the titles of a few excellent books, “A Lucky Child” and “The Last Hermit”...and even the logos of a couple of fine wines “Beaujolais Nouveau” and “Crystal” to celebrate the Major Event of the year. The July marriage of my son!

Life is an Alloy of happy events and some troubled regrets and woes. Even in folklore and fairyland there are mixtures of moods.

What are my prospects for 2018? A few voyages. I am, I think, heading eastward to Rumania to give a talk to undergraduates at the University in Bucharest... about the risks and rewards of teaching literature at a design school, the plight of the humanities in our current Academia, with its dilemmas and divisiveness. And then, I plan, so far anyway, to visit the cemeteries in Viking Stockholm, in quest of reminders of lost decades, of bygone celebrities whose era is done and over with.. except for such pilgrimages as mine, to salute and honor yesteryear and its yearnings.

My elder brother now lives along the banks of the Seekonk River in a lovely retreat, and we meet for coffee at the Wayland Square coffeehouses every Saturday

morning. It’s a long-established tradition! I fetch him in my Fiat, the way he used to come get me in his long-gone Austin roadster. I choose the muffin one week, and he opts for his favorite the next weekend. I like the coffee-cake muffin, or the blueberry, and he picks, for his turn, the chocolate chip, and then cuts it into two sections. They’re too big not to share, so we take a knife, some brown sugars, and a few tan napkins and set the table by the high window, overlooking the sidewalk garden protected by shrubs, umbrellas in sunny climes, and its view of pedestrians of all ages, types, shapes. Not unlike a trip abroad, to Paris or the Provinces.

I trust my memory and the magic power of time to shape and interpret pretty much everything in one’s life. I mean, I don’t lean on the gadgetry so abundant and available in today’s world. I don’t have to photograph every encounter or record every bit of idle or inspiring chit-chat. I paraphrase the passing scene. All I rely on is that pocket-size engagement booklet, so that I don’t forget who (“whom” would sound so pedantic here) I’m meeting or where.

But coming back to Janus and his mythic stare in both directions. I hope my brother will share with me these months and seasons ahead and that the forthcoming winter will be mild rather than wild (but not due to climate change/global warming, just to the good will of divine Providence) and that the spring beyond will be blossom-bright and flower-sweet. And the summer gentle and gratifying and the autumn fulfilling. And that we may split many a muffin together, cinnamon and mocha. (He takes his java black but sugary, I sip mine with cream and just one cube.) A final p.s. and return to “Janus”: it also defines the work of the common “janitor.” I have always had a place in my heart for the work of custodians, from the “Scio Musco” at Summit Avenue School in 1944, who signed my autograph book. He was my hero! To the cartoon character in the comics page of the Projo. “Frazz”, it’s called, and he’s the wisest wizard, with a mop to clean up the mess we leave behind and to offer the best guidance to what’s ahead for the small fry and the teachers together! Let’s hope for the best and salute the past

The Great Blackout Blues – Give or Take 53 Years As evening loomed on Tuesday, November 9, 1965, I settled down at my desk in our South Providence second floor tenement to study for Wednesday’s battery of Classical High School quizzes. Daily tests in each subject were standard in our demanding curriculum.

At precisely 5:16 p.m., the lights flickered and went out. Like many tenements of the era, the electricity flowed through old fashioned fuses. My father went into the basement to replace what he assumed was a blown fuse. He quickly discovered that none of the fuses had flamed out. Later, we learned that we were one of 30 million people who lost power in the Great Blackout of 1965.

A tripped 230 kilowatt transmission line in Ontario, Canada, had plunged the provinces of Ontario and parts of Quebec, all of the New England states and part of New York into sudden darkness. The blackout had triggered massive rush hour traffic delays, trapped thousands of persons in elevators, and froze the New York City subway system with more than 800,000 jammed in crowded cars.

For all the commotion the Great Blackout of 1967 caused, I have fond memories of the power outage. After all, Wednesday’s quizzes were cancelled! The reprieve was temporary because electricity was restored on a rolling basis over the next 24 hours. Regular daily testing resumed on Thursday. Many a Classical student hoped that the blackout persisted, at least through the semester exam period.

Fast forward to sometime between the evening of October 29 and the morning of October 30 this year. Matthew, a powerful storm with wind speeds and gusts well over 74 miles per hour (the marker for promoting a tropical storm to a hurricane) knocked out electricity to more than 1.3 million customers across New England and other Northeast locations. In Rhode Island, approximately 145,000 were without power.

We had previously experienced periodic power failures whenever of the house’s circuit breakers were tripped. So I thought that the blinking digital bedroom clock signaled one of those interruptions at some point during the night. It wasn’t long before I found out that the massive storm had cut power to wide swaths of the east coast. It took several days to restore the power to all Rhode Islanders. We were without electricity for about 36 hours. It was an interesting 36 hours.

During the power outage, we listened to news and music on our battery powered radio. It didn’t take long to realize how much time we typically spent watching television, especially since there was no television to watch! I never realized how many times I walked into a room and automatically flipped the light switch. During those powerless 36 hours, I repeated that reflex action countless times, only to be greeted by darkness. Not only that, but cell phone service went silent!

The daylight hours did not pose much of an inconvenience. Our main task was to limit the times we opened the refrigerator. We had to be even more judicious in opening the freezer. It remained closed for most of the blackout.

My wife and I passed the time that evening playing cards and talking by the light of candles strategically located around the dining room. The “down time” was actually quite relaxing. But unlike 1965, when I was longed for a longer power failure to delay the inevitable daily testing routine, I wanted the electricity to be restored quickly. How times do change.

Coincidentally, we were also affected this summer by a blackout that occurred 700 miles away. We had booked a beach house for a family vacation in August at Cape Hatteras, North Carolina. We were looking forward to spending time with our son Ben and his new wife, Renee, my daughter Kate, son-in-law Ray, and grandchildren Kailyn, Sophia, and Nicholas. We drove to my sister in law’s home in Virginia two days before the vacation was to start to break up the 18-hour journey south. In Virginia, we began to see news reports revealing that all three power transmission lines to the island had been severed. A worker had accidently sliced through the electric cables during construction of a new bridge. The island was in the dark.

The lower end of Cape Hatteras where we were headed was being evacuated and access was limited to residents. Power restoration efforts varied from three days months, depending on the reporting source. After three days of waiting, it was apparent that the Hatteras vacation would be cancelled. As an alternate plan, we decided to spend two days in Virginia Beach as a “consolation prize.” Seven-year old Nicholas was quick to point out his disappointment because, as he declared, we had promised him a week at the beach. Despite his objections, we enjoyed our family time together…in the sunlight!

Maybe this year, power outages and blackouts will be just memories.

The Age of Final Goodbyes Last year we buried my long-ago significant other and dear friend, Charlie. His death was expected. Given the cocktail of ailments that plagued his final months, it was one of those passings that truly are a blessing.

His funeral was the third that I learned of from a friend or colleague in as many days. The burial itself brought home the fact that I was saying my final goodbye to my friend of forty-five years.

It occurred to me that when I entered my seventh decade, I also entered the age of final goodbyes. Charlie was the third one of my co-workers from my corporate life in Manhattan who had died in the previous twelve months.

That number three again. One often hears that death comes in threes, but of course it comes in much larger numbers, depending on the time span covered. Some consider three to be a mystical or sacred number—The Holy Trinity, for instance. Or a lucky one— three coffee beans in a glass of Sambuca Romana after dinner. Not one, not two; always three, if you want good luck.

Third time’s the charm and all that. My mind fixated less on the number than on the finality of the parting.

For me the process of saying goodbye to Charlie included going through old photo albums. I was looking for pictures that I could post in the guestbook for his obituary on legacy.com. So sad to see his smile again, and to remember where the photos were taken. At my parents’ fiftieth anniversary party, for instance. My father and mother have now been gone for 34 and 22 years respectively.

A photo of Charlie and me with my mother between us, taken one summer at the home where I grew up in New Jersey, was especially painful. Charlie had his summer tan and we were all smiling and happy. My siblings and I sold the house after my mother died and it has since been remodeled. The small lake community has changed. Some of my summer friends still gather for lunch now and then, but not at the lake. Not anymore. The intersection of all that loss increased my grief geometrically.

I was forced to look at the faces in those pictures for quite awhile. They needed to be scanned into my older

computer, so I could adjust the shading and resolution in Photoshop. I cropped myself out in order to focus on Charlie.

Then they had to be put on a thumb drive and transferred to my newer computer, the one with an Internet connection. Then uploaded to legacy.com. It sounds mechanical and robotic, but when I looked at the faces, it was anything but. Many tissues, a red nose and puffy eyes later, I was finished.

At the luncheon after Charlie’s funeral, that final goodbye behind us, it was time to share memories of what made him special. Some of the stories were similar, even though they came from different pockets in his life. We all knew about his love of trains, for example, reflected in his extensive model train collection. And most knew that this love grew from watching them on the track behind his grandmother’s house. She took care of him while his mother was at work.

I thought about that as my husband, Jagdish, and I drove home. A seldom-used freight track runs through the wooded area on the opposite side of the fairway behind our condominium.

On some weekday mornings, a train makes one trip, going in and coming out. The engine rumbles so deeply that I hear it well before it comes into view.

I call out: “Here comes the train!” and run to our porch to watch it go by.

My joyful routine makes my husband laugh. Even before my friend died, I would say to Jagdish: “Now I understand why Charlie loves trains so much.” And so, despite the final goodbye having been said, I will remember my dear friend fondly whenever I hear a train roll by. I will smile and perhaps wipe away a tear. Then I’ll get back to whatever it is those of left behind do with the days we have left.
