Create Family Memories this Holiday Season The Halloween decorations had barely been tucked away and the dust had yet to settle on what remained of my kids’ trick-or-treating haul before the two little ones set their sights on the big one—Christmas. While I’m a firm believer in not stringing your lights, breaking out the tree or tuning in to your favorite holiday jingles until at least Thanksgiving, there’s certainly something contagious about their early excitement.

That’s because, growing up, Christmas was also my favorite time of the year, and not just due to the presents or special treats. It was because of the anticipation and the promise of continuing with the traditions my family enjoyed.

There was the annual pilgrimage to La Salette in Attleboro, where my imagination ran wild among what felt like ten million twinkling lights. There was picking out our family’s live tree and selecting just the right spot in the yard where we’d plant it and watch it grow for years to come. There were weekend car rides to check out the decorations in our favorite neighborhoods, hoping that some houses added to their already impressive displays from one year to the next. And, my favorite tradition—one I’ve assumed and continue to this day—helping my grandmother prepare for Festa dei sette pesci, otherwise known as The Feast of the Seven Fishes.

As I enter my seventh Christmas as a parent, each year brings a newfound appreciation for those traditions I’ve passed on to my family, as well as the new ones we’ve started. Although it’s cliché to say there’s no time better than the present to take it all in—these days that pass much too quickly and never return— there may be no truer of a statement. So many of my best holiday memories involve my grandparents, and now that my parents are grandparents, I get to watch them with what I can only imagine is the same awe they saw in their parents when I was but a boy.

Having begun in early November with my wife to lay the foundation for some of the special things we’ll do with our kids this holiday season, I thought it the perfect opportunity to highlight a few things on our list for you to consider with your family. While gifts and all are great, I guarantee the family memories you’ll create—particularly those grandparent-to-grandchildren ones—will outlast anything found beneath the tree.

Lights, Trains and More Lights…

A little more than an hour away from Providence, tucked away on Pine Street in Carver, Massachusetts, is Edaville Railroad, regarded as one of the oldest heritage railroad operations in the country. Perhaps best known as a family amusement park home to Dino Land, Thomas Land and more than 90 rides and attractions, Edaville transforms each November and December for its spectacular Christmas Festival of Lights.

While the majority of Edaville’s rides and attractions remain open this time of year, the real reasons to make the trek are the more than 17 million—yes, 17 million—lights illuminating the park, the special “Edaville Express: Where’s Santa” ride, and a larger-than-life Santa for unique family photos.

On “Edaville Express: Where’s Santa,” you get to enjoy an interactive 45-minute train ride adventure with your family in search of Santa. Joined by dancing elves who serve hot chocolate, eggnog and cookies, the little ones must help Mrs. Claus find Santa as the train passes through Thomas Land and into a magical land filled with lights. There are sing-alongs to your favorite Christmas tunes, “magic” bells, and a special guest who joins you on the way back to Edaville Station.

Tickets to the park are reasonably-priced and include access to Thomas Land, Edaville Proper, the Christmas Festival of Lights and all open rides and attractions. And, for the train-loving children in tow, you can join them for unlimited rides on Thomas the Tank Engine throughout your visit.

A Book Brought to Life There’s a pretty good chance you’re familiar with The Polar Express, whether the book or the 2004 computer animated film starring Tom Hanks. You may also know that the illustrator and writer of the story, Chris Van Allsburg, lives in Providence.

What you may not know, however, is that the Blackstone Valley Tourism Council brings this holiday classic to life right here in Woonsocket.

The Polar Express was published in 1985, winning Van Allsburg his second Caldecott Medal (he also received one for Jumanji) and near instantly becoming a family favorite and landing a spot on the Top 100 Picture Books of all-time. As amazing as the book is—which is read each year in this house, multiple times—what Blackstone Valley Tourism Council pulls off is nothing short of magical. But, I have to warn you, tickets sell quickly, and in December, the train rolls out of the station twice on Fridays, and three times each on Saturdays and Sundays, ending on the 23rd. So, there are limited spots.

Inspired by the timeless Christmas classic, a real-life Polar Express train departs from the Blackstone Valley Train Depot in Woonsocket (1 Depot Square) for a 3hour event that includes a 90-minute excursion on the train. Onboard, passengers are treated to storytelling, sing-a-longs, games, cookies and hot chocolate, and a visit from Santa where he personally delivers the first gift of Christmas to every child. If you land tickets, you’ll want to arrive early for some great photo opportunities alongside custom-made Polar Express backdrops and a kids’ area that features coloring and writing letters to Santa. There’s also the beautifully-decorated Historic Blackstone Valley Train Depot that you’ll want to explore, where music and the spirit of the season fill the air.

Rhode Island’s Timeless Holiday Classic (And a Bonus Idea…)

There’s a variety of specialized tickets, including seats in different cars of the train—such as Dancer, Dasher and Prancer. And new for this year are children’s priced tickets (13 months to 12 years-old) and a lap-sit ticket for those twelve months or younger. If I had to pick my favorite holiday story, I don’t think there’s one I enjoy more than A Christmas Carol. The underlying messages and emotion, its timelessness, and the many adaptations never disappoint. It’s a story we all grew up with; one that can be enjoyed at any age. And, here in Rhode Island, we’re fortunate to have Trinity Rep continue its tradition with an annual production of the classic that differs just enough year-to-year that you never want to miss one.

The Name Says it All…Santa’s Village

While a performance of A Christmas Carol may not be appropriate for small children—the ghosts and special effects could frighten some—it’s a perfect opportunity to enjoy a special night out with that slightly older child or grandchild.

This one is a bit off the beaten path and probably takes a little planning to pull off. But if you’re looking to get away for a weekend night before the holiday and start a new Christmas tradition, why not head up north to New Hampshire?

Located in Jefferson, New Hampshire, and surrounded by the majestic White Mountains, Santa’s Village is a pretty unique amusement park that keeps a Christmas theme year-round. Of course, they really kick things up a notch around the holidays.

I won’t get into the basics of the story, as I’m sure you’re familiar with the tale. But what I can say is, if you’ve never seen a performance at Trinity’s Chace Theater, there’s not a bad seat in the house. That’s an important thing to remember since tickets for December weekend shows tend to sell quickly. It’s also why Trinity begins showing A Christmas Carol in early November, continuing through December 31.

Branded “The most wonderful time of year” to visit Santa’s Village, Santa greets every child as they arrive and eagerly listens to their wishes for the season. Many of the park’s rides remain open, weather permitting, such as the Skyway Sleigh Monorail, Christmas Ferris Wheel, Reindeer Carousel, Little Elf Flying School, and many others.

Tickets to A Christmas Carol range from $25 to $39 and can be purchased at www.trinityrep.com or by calling the Box Office at (401) 351-4242.

There are also a number of special shows, Santa’s Light Show outdoors on Main Street and A Tinkerdoodle Christmas in 3-D at the Polar Theatre. And, all of the park’s shops are open for those still looking for that special gift to give a loved one.

And, as a bonus idea, while there’s no production of A Christmas Carol on Tuesday, December 13, Downtown Providence will be alive for the holidays with a special Christmas WaterFire lighting.

Santa’s Village is open each Saturday and Sunday from December 3 to December 31 (excluding Christmas Eve and Christmas). Children under the age of 3 are admitted free, and everyone should plan to dress warmly if they visit. Elves for Elders Sponsored by Seniors RULE

Elves for Elders is a program designed to obtain gifts for seniors in various facilities across the state who might not otherwise receive a gift for the Holiday Season. Christmas trees went up on November 1 and are located at the customer service desks.

Star ornaments with the senior’s first name and gift idea (example: Mary – slippers – size 8) go on the star. Someone takes a star, buys the gift and returns it along with a gift bag to the service desk.

Dozens upon dozens of decorated, lit Christmas trees will surround the basin of Waterplace Park as braziers burn aglow in the water beginning at approximately 5:00 p.m. This is just the sixth year that WaterFire has offered this special holiday lighting, and from what I hear, there may be a few new surprises in store for 2016.

Out in the Cold

I’m a 28 year old adult. I am no longer blessed with the pleasures of “Winter Break� because I am blessed with the other pleasure of never having to attend school again. When I was a kid, my brother, Dave, and I took full advantage of our Winter Break and various snowy days throughout the season. We would go sledding with our parents at Triggs, build snow forts with our neighbors and friends on Kinfield Street in Providence, and help our parents and neighbors shovel the snow from the driveways and walkways.

We would spend hours outside, sometimes until after the street lights would turn on! Snowball fights and general catapulting of our bodies into snow banks would leave us with frozen noses and toes, but nothing was greater than coming inside after an icy war, dropping our snow-filled clothes on the newspaper by the door and getting into warm, comfy clothes. No, wait. There was something greater than the cozy pajamas, and that’s post-snow food! Whether it was a bowl of mom’s Venus de Milo soup, or some American Chop Suey, it was always just the right thing to warm us up from the inside out.

Moments like this leave me with a sense of nostalgia, but they also remind me that some people aren’t as fortunate as we were as children. Not every child gets to come in from the cold to a warm meal and clean, warm clothes. Some don’t even get to come in from the cold at all. My parents taught us from a very young age that what we had was not the same as what everyone else had; some people had more, some people had less.

They would have us donate our unused toys and clothes to those who needed them more than we did. They taught us the importance of family and that people are more important than things. My dad passed away unexpectedly in 2011. It was an impossibly huge blow to our family and it cemented something that we had always known and lived by since we were kids; the value of the people in our lives. As us “kids� grow older and begin to have families of our own (no children for us yet, just our dog, Karen) we’ve all come to realize that Christmas has never been about the gifts. The parts of the holiday that we would all look forward to and cherish are the happy moments spent with our loved ones.

With this concept in mind, we’ve started a new tradition in recent years with my dad’s side of the family.

Rather than buying each other gifts, we participate in an “adopt-a-family� type of program and together, as a family, we provide gifts for another family that may not be able to afford a Christmas like the ones that we were so fortunate to have had as children. We split the list up and each of us gets a member of the family to buy for. I feel like I get to know this child based on their wish list! I must admit, being a graphic artist and musician, I do tend to pick the kids who have “paint set� and “bracelet making kit� and other toys that foster creativity on their list. I feel a connection to this child as if they are my own, as if they are me. When I was young, family members gave me similar gifts of craft kits and art supplies.

These were more than just toys for me, they showed me what I was capable of if I used my imagination and what activities made me happy. They basically showed me what I wanted to do with my life! I know it may be a bit of a reach to say that the gifts we are giving these children are shaping their future career paths, but at the very least they are making them happy and giving them something to enjoy, and that is gratifying enough.

For us, the holidays are about appreciating the things we have that others may not have, as well as the people in our lives that make those things not matter at all.

I don’t write this to wave a flag and say “look how compassionate and generous we are!� I write with the hope that maybe, some of you will be inspired to consider starting a new tradition with your families too.

Taming the Holiday Frenzy Beast This column comes with a warning. I am a cultural dinosaur.

During a recent trip to Minneapolis with my son Matthew to see Monday Night Football game between the New York Giants and the Minnesota Vikings, we hopped in a cab to tour the country’s greatest monument to retail-The Mall of America. I am not a shopper, but we couldn’t pass up a chance to tour this humongous sales coliseum.

The mall sprawls out over 96 acres and has 2.5 million feet (YES MILLION) of retail space. The mammoth structure houses more than 520 stores, 50 restaurants, a multiplex theatre, aquarium, an amusement park in the middle of the mall, and I’m not sure what else. If you can find your way to the parking lots, there are more than 14,000 spaces. How do you think that works out during the Christmas shopping season?

The Mall of America sits on the site of the old Metropolitan Stadium where the Minnesota Twins and the Vikings once played. If you want to take a few moments (or maybe longer) to find it, there is a plaque marking a Harmon Killebrew home run that traveled more than 520 feet from home plate on June 3, 1967, about a generation before baseball’s steroid era.

Here is the most interesting fact about the Mall of America. It’s closed on Thanksgiving Day! What? Retail monsters are willing to starve themselves for one day during the hectic Christmas shopping blitz so that the estimated 13,000 regular and seasonal workers can relax and spend a day with family and friends? Who knew? Alfred, the Macy’s janitor in the 1947 classic, Miracle on 34th Street, said, “Yeah, there are a lot of bad ‘isims’ floatin’ around in this world, but one of the worst is commercialism.”

To be fair, capitalism, commercialism, and consumerism drive our economy. The formula has worked for more than 200 years and has enabled millions Americans to own their own homes and cars, educate their children, and live a good life. But do we need the feeding frenzy of Black Friday, or the constant reminders of “how many shopping days are left until Christmas”? Don’t you become oblivious to the relentless drone of advertising that fills the airwaves, newspapers, and the Internet?

Feel the anxiety of trying to create the perfect Christmas? Then stop the madness!

I spent some time researching the topic “how to reduce holiday stress” on the Internet. Here’s a sampling of the suggestions I found: WebMD advises you to create the holiday YOU want. In other words, create your own memories.

Heathline encourages you to keep your holiday celebrations simple, keep your finances in check (a real challenge these days where slick marketing tries to convince you “that you really need to have this”), and don’t over-schedule your holiday time.

In other words, don’t be afraid to say no.

My favorite holiday advice comes from Real Simple magazine, “Re-gift carefully.”

As I confessed at the beginning of this column, I am a cultural dinosaur who has his own ideas about making the holidays memorable and stress-free: Invite an older friend or relative to join you for Christmas dinner or other celebration.

Instead of over-spending or trying to find that perfect gift, plan a family vacation.

Talk with children and grandchildren about your memories of Christmas as a child.

Make some popcorn and hot chocolate and watch the classic Christmas television classics and movies with them.

Volunteer or give a Christmas gift to your favorite charity.

I’m sure that you can add your own suggestions to this list.

Christmas and the holidays can be a season of joy and sharing. It’s all up to you.

As Peg Bracken observes, “Gifts of time and love are surely the basic ingredients of a truly merry Christmas.”

• Bake 25 minutes, or until bean mixture is hot and bubbling; stir. Sprinkle with remaining cheese, onions and bacon.

White Chocolate Popcorn Crunch

5 cups popped popcorn 1/2 cup dried sweetened cranberries 1/2 cup sliced almonds 12 ounces white chocolate baking chips, chopped white chocolate or white candy coating 1-2 tablespoons vegetable shortening (optional) Cover baking pan with foil or wax paper; set aside. Place popcorn, cranberries and almonds in large bowl; set aside.

In double boiler over barely simmering water, melt chocolate, stirring until smooth, or melt according to package directions.

(If chocolate is not smooth after melting, stir in 1-2 tablespoons shortening until mixture is smooth and loose enough to coat popcorn.)

Pour chocolate mixture over popcorn mixture; stir to coat.

Spread onto prepared pan; allow to cool completely.

When chocolate is cooled and set, break into chunks for serving.

Store leftovers in airtight container at room temperature.

Recipe courtesy of Circulon Gourmet Cookware 2 onions, quartered 10 cloves garlic, unpeeled 2 cups carrots, peeled and cut into 1-inch pieces 1 celery root, peeled and cut into 1-inch pieces 2 parsnips, peeled and cut into 1-inch pieces 3 turnips, peeled and cut in half to about 2-inch pieces 1-2 sweet potatoes, peeled and cut into 3-inch pieces

1 cup winter squash, peeled and cut into 2-inch cubes 2-3 potatoes, cut into 2-inch quarters 1-2 white or gold beets, peeled and quartered 2 tablespoons olive oil salt pepper 3 sprigs rosemary 3 sprigs thyme Circulon Symmetry Chocolate sheet pan Glaze: 2 tablespoons oil 3 tablespoons maple syrup 2 tablespoons balsamic vinegar 1/2 teaspoon rosemary Heat oven to 425 F. Combine vegetables, olive oil, salt, pepper, rosemary and thyme; toss well. Spread on sheet pan. Cover and bake 40 minutes.

Check vegetables and cook another 5 minutes, if needed, or until vegetables are tender but not mushy.

Remove rosemary and thyme; add salt and pepper.

Combine glaze ingredients and cook 5-10 minutes until thickened. Pour over vegetables before serving; stir to combine.

Lip Sync Battle for a cause

What do a Carrie Underwood impersonator, a Kiss-style rocker wannabee and a mock Donald Trump have in common? They were all willing to strut their stuff and lip sync their hearts out to support the American Cancer Society at the first-ever Rhode Island Nursing Homes Lip Sync Battle. Before a sellout crowd at the Imperial Room in Cranston, employees of the state’s skilled nursing and rehabilitation centers shimmied and strutted across the stage, helping to raise nearly $11,000 for cancer research in the process.

The event was the brain child of Pamela Marchetti, a registered nurse who consults with employees from the area’s skilled nursing centers to enhance quality in their facilities. Marchetti, who was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2014, is a strong advocate of the American Cancer Society, helping to raise funds through events like Making Strides Against Breast Cancer and Relay for Life. She is often joined by clients and friends who are more than happy to show their support by accompanying her on her fundraising journey. Last year, despite being near the end of her chemotherapy treatments,

Marchetti led a team of caregivers to a second place finish among some strong contenders in a national video dance contest which brought awareness to breast cancer research.

This year’s fundraiser was her way of saying thanks.

“The focus of the evening was on the people who care for others,” said Marchetti, reflecting on her own experience battling cancer. “It’s unbelievable what these caregivers did for me while I was sick. The support and love was beyond anything I could have imagined so I wanted to organize a fun night out for them in return.”

Mission accomplished.

It’s not often that you see a health care administrator pounce on the drums in full Kiss regalia or “nuns” dancing across the stage, especially when you’re usually seeing them in business suits or scrubs. The contestants were judged on choreography, costumes, lip sync ability and crowd reaction, with the winning team - West View Nursing and Rehabilitation Center’s Kiss rock stars - taking home the championship belt.

The fun-filled night also included an encouraging video shout out from LL Cool J himself, the host of the popular Lip Sync Battle television show.

Though nearly non-stop laughter indicated the mood of the event, Marchetti made sure to include a video which paid tribute to friends and colleagues who had been, or are still, enmeshed in a battle against breast cancer. Despite the light-hearted ambiance, the video offered an emotional reminder that such fundraising events are critically necessary.

“Pam’s so fun-loving and full of energy. Only she could elicit that kind of turnout. We had a jam-packed crowd and the event was more of a hit than we could have imagined. Pam is always inspiring others to do great things, her drive and determination is without a doubt why this event was so successful.

We are going to need a much larger venue for next year! We can hardly wait,” said Susan Bettencourt, the Chief Compliance Officer of a 12-facility group of Rhode Island nursing centers and volunteer on the committee that helped pull the Lip Sync event together.

Before the battle, the evening started with cocktails where guests could try their luck with raffles and a silent auction. They then dined with the event’s celebrity hosts Patrick Little and Danielle North of WPRI-12 before taking in the show. By all standards, the evening was a huge success in every way.

“My hope was that people would put work aside for a while to come together and have a good time but also to remember those who have lost their battle with cancer or are still fighting.

It’s so important that we take time to reflect on what we can do to decrease the prevalence of this disease, especially in Rhode Island,” said Marchetti. “We all want to help and make a difference for this very important and emotional cause.”

There’s no doubt that Marchetti and her friends from Rhode Island’s skilled nursing centers are doing just that.

Protecting Social Security for Decades to Come This year marks the 81st anniversary of President Franklin Delano Roosevelt signing the Social Security Act into law.

Since 1935, Social Security has lifted millions of Americans out of poverty, ensured hardworking Americans can retire with economic security and dignity, and provided a critical safety net for the disabled all across the country.

Critics of Social Security describe this program as an “entitlement” in need of reform. Social Security is not an entitlement, Social Security is an earned benefit. These benefits are owed to hardworking Americans who have played by the rules and paid into the system their whole working lives. Today, nearly 60 million Americans collect Social Security benefits, including 40 million seniors, 9 million disabled workers, and 4 million survivors of a deceased spouse or parent. Nationally, more than a third of recipients rely on Social Security for

at least 90% of their income. Two-thirds of retirees rely on Social Security for a majority of their income.

While Social Security is on stable footing today, having built up nearly $3 trillion in reserves, it is projected that after 2034, the program will only be able to pay about three-quarters of benefits if no changes are made. And at a time when millions of Americans are increasingly concerned about their retirement, it’s important that Congress take responsible steps to ensure that Social Security continues to deliver results for current recipients and all future generations.

To be clear, anyone who suggests we need to cut or privatize Social Security is fundamentally misguided. We know there is a better way forward, which is why we are proud to introduce a plan that not only increases benefits now, but ensures Social Security will be here through the next century.

In addition to improving benefits, the increased revenue will provide a tax cut for 11 million seniors, establish a new minimum benefit so that no one who has worked hard and played by the rules is asked to retire into poverty, and expands the lifeline of Social Security through the year 2100, ensuring that future generations will be able to retire with peace of mind.

No government program or initiative reflects our core American values better than Social Security. After a lifetime of working hard and playing by the rules, every Rhode Island senior should be able to enjoy their retirement years with dignity.

We have met this promise for more than 80 years now, and it’s important that we protect and preserve Social Security’s earned benefits for years to come.

Some Refunds Delayed in 2017 Due to changes in the law, beginning in 2017, if you claim the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) or Additional Child Tax Credit (ACTC) on your tax return, the IRS must hold your refund until February 15.

This new law, approved by Congress, requires the IRS to hold the entire refund — even the portion not associated with EITC or ACTC. This change helps ensure that you receive the refund you are owed by giving the agency more time to help detect and prevent fraud.

As in past years, the IRS will begin accepting and processing tax returns once the filing season begins. You can file as you normally do. Even though the IRS cannot issue refunds for some early filers until February 15, most refunds will still be issued within the normal timeframe: in less than 21 days, after being accepted for processing by the IRS. Be careful when planning any financial obligations that are based on any specific refund date when claiming these credits. This includes being cautious of loan and preparer fee agreements where repayment is dependent upon the refund. Be especially aware of any stated repayment dates that are earlier than February 15. You don’t want to incur more costs by committing to any re-payment schedule that requires a full payment before the refund will actually become available.

You can check the status of your refund with the Where’s My Refund? tool on IRS. gov or the IRS2Go Mobile App. Where’s My Refund? remains the best way to check the status of your refund after February 15.

Changes to the Individual Tax Identification Number (ITIN) Program All ITINs not used on a federal income tax return at least once in the last three consecutive tax years will expire at the end of the year, based on the 2015 PATH Act. Additionally, all ITINs issued before 2013 will begin expiring this year, starting with those with middle digits of 78 and 79. All expired ITINs must be renewed before being used on a U.S. tax return. No action is needed by ITIN holders who don’t need to file a tax return in 2017.

Also, there are new documentation requirements when applying for or renewing an ITIN for certain dependents. Dependents without a date of U.S. entry on their passports from countries other than Mexico or Canada will need to prove residency before an ITIN can be issued.

Compare prices across various retailers. While popular gifts may be similarly priced because of the level of demand, it is still a worthy effort to comparison shop before making a rash purchase. In addition, consider that new generations of certain tech products come out quite frequently, and the previous generation may become obsolete rather quickly. Know when manufacturers are releasing new products so you can time your purchases accordingly.

Put the product through your own test run. Try a product out for yourself to get a feel for it and its attributes. Hands-on knowledge may be the best type when gifting tech items. Just keep in mind that many retailers have a reboxing or restocking fee on tech products. Hope and Despair It was here at the very heart of our campus, at the First Baptist Church, that I found a wondrous nautical map, framed and offered for sale, acknowledging the existence of a pair of tiny islands off the coast of Patience and Prudence. Our place names are just so marvelous--a real treasure of words. Inviting us to think and to dream. An intimate chart of the soul. Patience and Prudence: wait for your fate, live humbly, honorably. Just a few efforts with your wrist and fist over the oars or paddles, and you will find the isles of “Hope,” and then, perhaps, “Despair.”

The gracious pastor of the Roger Williams’ church in our questing wanderer’s search of soul liberty, the Reverend Jamie P. Washam, told my students and me that the structure was put up

by Portuguese sailors, who treated the house of worship as..a ship! “That’s why the steeple resists the gale winds, because it is sea-worthy like a mast and sways and bends. And the columns are just carved trees, which explains why they aren’t perfectly straight!”

Well, I remember even as I listen: I

recall, a few seasons ago, that I explored those islands in our bay: I stood at the shoreline of Patience and Prudence and looked outward at Hope, a nice green terrain shaped just a bit like a giant gingerbread man! But only another few moments of rowing and you would be....if the moon wasn’t yet full nor the tide quite high...upon the rock of Despair! Under a full December moon, it might disappear altogether, like a bad mood. Okay, so turn this geography lesson into a sermon. Live with calm expectation (patience) and wise thrift (prudence) but visit your highest hope when you can, and acknowledge your lowest thoughts, feelings, and losses (despair) but when the lunar glow (of love or laughter) is at its height, hey, the sadness vanishes into the void. But be careful with your canoe, you could hit it and harm yourself.

Well, all of this is by way of saying, look at all our street signs and take them for what they’re worth. My two favorites beyond our East Side are “Plenty” Street in South Providence--it doesn’t mean “a lot of ” it means “enough!”

O Christmas Tree – Real or Fake?

I’ve always had a fresh Christmas tree. Some years I’ve put up three of them. I’m not counting the little artificial trees for my cats. I’m talking about ones that are six to eight feet tall and smell like the forest has come into your home. I trim each one with ornaments on a different theme—whimsical animals and other colorful objects, metallic stars and snowflakes, glass balls hand blown by local craftsmen.

As my husband and I have aged, it’s become more difficult to get the live trees into their stands. Not to mention getting them straight once they’re in them. We used to laugh when we went through that process, but about two years ago we realized it wasn’t funny anymore. Still, I resisted going fake, lest I evolve into one of those eccentric women who keep their trees up all year.

In my mind, there are four stages of eccentricity. Stage one, you take off the ornaments, stash the tree in a far corner of the room and cover it with an old sheet. Stage two, you leave the ornaments on, but still stash and cover.

Stage three, the tree is in the corner, but you no longer bother with the sheet. By stage four, you’re keeping it lit all year.

No. This was not a picture of what I wanted to become.

Remembering the prior year’s struggle with our live tree, I broke with tradition last year and bought an artificial one. We found it at Michaels for just $159. It was seven and a half feet tall, but our double-height living room made it appear stunted. The déclassé twine we used to tie it to the wall didn’t help. By Christmas Eve, I was so tormented by my decision that I went out and bought a live tree. The tallest I could find that late was five feet, and we put it on our three-season porch.

Now that I’m a year older and at least one inch shorter, if I want a tree that isn’t dwarfed in our living room, it probably can’t be a live one. As Christmas approaches, I’m searching on-line for artificial trees. I’ve seen some that look almost real. And definitely not déclassé.

Balsam Hill has a good selection, but the number of options is confusing.

There are three degrees of “realism”— most realistic, realistic and traditional.

Of course I want one that’s realistic. I’m feeling guilty even considering this. But I’m a traditionalist when it comes to my tree. I have no idea what the distincDecember 2016

tion is, so I put a pin in this decision for now. (Wedding planners on Hallmark romcoms are always “putting pins” in things that need to be resolved.)

Size is another factor. The 10 - 12 feet category seems right for our ceiling.

This height comes only in “most realistic” and prices range from $1,699 (now on sale for $1,199) to $2,999 (now $1,999). Apparently, I need to think smaller. The next category down offers all three degrees of realism in a mere 73 combinations. I decide to pull out the realism pin and opt for the middle level.

The trees that show up are all 9 feet tall.

I can live with that.

The next decision is lights: lit (clear, multi, combo or LED) or unlit. I put another pin in this. Pin in, pin out, pin in. This is giving me vertigo. The prices on these are “just” $1,099 (now on sale for $749) to $1,499 (now $1,049). In addition to those lighting options, I’m offered four needle types. I feel my ADHD kicking in. Desperate to take control of this process, I decide to go with clear lights, either conventional or LED, giving me six choices, which seems manageable.

Now we have needle types: Black Spruce, Durango Douglas Fir, Scotch Pine and Rocky Mountain Pine. This last comes in a “teardrop” shape that is “perfect for hanging delicate ornaments.” I take that to mean the branches will sag under my collection of blown glass balls. Other variations are said to be good for “heavier” ornaments.

Does that mean the branches will be too dense for my dangly treasures? I feel another pin coming. Or maybe it’s needles. Needles and pins. (Am I hearing music?)

Good news! For just $19, I can order a branch sample kit with 22 choices that match up to all the trees I’m considering and then some. I spring for the kit, put a pin in the tree decision and head for the wine rack. Maybe a fresh tree isn’t such a bad idea after all. I’ll just need to find someone to help put it up and take it down. I put a pin in that, too.

Leaving cookies and milk for Santa Claus is a Christmas Eve tradition.

Children regularly place a dish of cookies and a glass of milk by the tree on Christmas Eve so that Santa has enough energy to complete all of his gift-giving before kids wake up on Christmas morning. The tradition of leaving cookies out on Christmas Eve may trace its origins to Saint Nicholas.

On the feast of St. Nicholas on December 6, children would leave food and drink for the saint and any attendants. The treats would be exchanged for gifts. While that’s one theory behind the tradition, others think it is linked to the history of the Christmas tree and the edible decorations that adorn it. Santa would snack on the ornaments. Even after edible decorations gave way to inedible ornaments, the tradition of leaving a snack for Santa remained. Whatever the origins behind the tradition, millions of children dutifully leave milk and cookies for Santa on Christmas Eve.
