Funhouse Mirror Reflecting on memories is like looking into a funhouse mirror; thoughts contort, stretch and change. It’s been nearly 20 years since Warwick’s Rocky Point Amusement Park closed, and a similar thing happens to those who spent summers there; the rides were scarier and more exciting, fun was just around the corner, everything was less expensive and life was simpler and carefree.

For Rhode Islanders who remember days spent riding on the Cyclone and Skydiver, or eating clam cakes and more by the shore, the questions now asked about the defunct Rocky Point are, “How did this happen?” and “Why?” Nearly two generations of children haven’t experienced the park the way their parents, grandparents, and great-grandparents did. This causes many PrimeTime readers to demand “Bring it back!” when reminiscing about their experiences with the park.

But what’s the “it” that people want brought back? Since its inception, Rocky Point has meant something different to each generation. The summer venue destroyed and rebuilt time and again following disasters man-made and not, the park was always home to more than just rides and games. Rocky Point was the place for an untold number of hunting and fishing trips, clambake picnics, baseball games, boat rides, concerts, fantastic functions, and love stories in all stages.

As the demolition of what remains at Rocky Point begins, PrimeTime takes a peek through the funhouse mirror at Rocky Point’s ride through history and its future.

A reflection on the history and a look to the future The History The 124 acre park, located on Warwick Neck, was occupied by the Narragansett Indians when the Europeans first arrived between 1638 and 1640. Four subdivisions of Narragansett’s lived in Warwick at that time; the Shawmets, Potowomuts, Cowesetts, and Pawtuxets. Archaeological finds, such as rock-shelters and shoreline sites, have been recorded and identified at the Point. In 1641, in what became known as the Shawomet Purchase, Narragansett Indian sachem Miantonomi signed a deed with Samuel Gorton and eleven others which relinquished Rocky Point, much of the City of Warwick and beyond. The price paid was 144 fathoms of wampumpeage, approximately 36 pounds in English money.

Rocky Point was eventually obtained by Thomas and Polly Stafford of Warwickshire England, who moved to Plymouth Colony in 1726 and then made their way to Warwick. Their descendants kept the land unchanged until 1840. That year, Captain William Winslow of the Argo approached the Stafford’s granddaughter Phoebe Lyons and her husband Jasper for permission to use the beautiful property for group excursions. Captain Winslow then ferried in more than 500 Sunday school students for a picnic day by the shore, the park’s first group outing.

This successful arrangement led to Captain Winslow leasing the land, and then purchasing 89 acres in 1847 to continue his ventures and further develop the park. He paid each Stafford granddaughter $1,200 for the title to the property. Winslow began the famed tradition which would continue for almost 150 years: serving shore dinners of farm and sea fare harvested from in and around Narragansett Bay. He is responsible for the first rides at Rocky Point, such as a carousel and a “Spanish Fandango,” a predecessor of the Ferris wheel. He charged customers 25 cents round-trip to use his steamboat ferry service. He continued to operate the park until 1865, when he sold it to Governor | PrimeTime 4

William Sprague’s son, Byron, for $65,000.

One of America’s wealthiest individuals, Byron Sprague hoped to turn the park into a resort for the wealthy. He built an extravagant summer home called Mansion House, as well as a 10-story octagonal observation tower with spectacular vistas overlooking the bay. Sprague invested more than $300,000 at Rocky Point, equal to just over $5 million dollars today.

Unable to capture the business he intended, Sprague sold Rocky Point to what would eventually became the Continental Steamship Company in 1869. They added dining halls, lavish fountains and grounds, and a 300 room hotel. Transportation to and from the park was provided mainly by ships which docked hourly at the Point. Guests by the thousands still enjoyed clambakes and carousels, and the addition of bowling alleys and shooting galleries. It was during this time that Civil War veterans, including the Army of the Potomac, first held reunions at the park, continuing the tradition until 1940.

For the next decade, Sunday schools from around New England continued their picnic excursions to the park. Concerts, such as the American Band Tournament, often drew crowds of more than 20,000 people.

Rutherford B. Hays became the first President to visit Rocky Point on June 28, 1877. He was became the first President to make a phone call speaking with the telephone’s inventor, Alexander Graham Bell, in Providence.

The first of many significant fires to afflict the park occurred in March of 1883, where the Rocky Point Hotel, the 1,000 seat shore dinner hall and a boathouse were completely destroyed. With the destruction of the hotel, Rocky Point lost its position as an overnight resort.

State Representative Col. Randall Harrington purchased the property in November, 1910 for $250,000.

He would successfully operate the park for 30 years, continuing to add features and rides like the Russian

Toboggan Roller Coaster, a baseball field and a huge shore dinner hall built on pilings over Narragansett Bay. Col. Harrington’s Rocky Point became so popular that a public trolley line was built directly into the park. At one time, trolleys arrived and departed every 30 seconds. Two theaters were built which hosted singers, dancers, comedians, silent movies and vaudeville shows.

Following her husband’s death in 1918, Amelia Harrington closed the park. In 1920, Paul and Ralph Castiglioni leased the land from her, and in 1923 they established the Rocky Point Amusement Company. Summer outings continued, and the park hosted events for organizations ranging from the Knights of Columbus to the Ku Klux Klan. The park survived

summer living the Great Depression and Prohibition, but couldn’t survive the infamous Great Hurricane of 1938. Most of the park’s structures were destroyed, and Castiglioni returned the lease to the Harrington family.

After the hurricane many believed the park would never open again, but construction began within a year under the direction of Thomas Wilson, who leased the land from the Harrington family. The park never did open, and in 1945, after 57 years of Harrington family ownership, the park was sold to the Studley Land Company.

The Modern Era

Rocky Point was held by the company for two years when in 1947, the park was ushered into the modern era and purchased by Frederick Hilton, Joseph Trillo, and Vincent Ferla. Vincent’s brother, Conrad was hired as general manager. Conrad, once referred to as a “consummate promoter in the P.T. Barnum tradition” became known as “Mr. Rocky Point” and directed development of a park now familiar to most readers. They reopened the new amusement park in 1948.Conrad claimed there were weekends which brought in 75,000 people, with 15,000 shore dinners served.

Tragedy struck in August of 1954. Hurricane Carol destroyed the recently rebuilt shore dinner hall, all the major rides, and ended the season. The park was rebuilt and included another shore dinner hall, claiming to be the worlds largest that could seat 3,500. They also added the Palladium Ballroom and Windjammer Lounge in the 1960s. These were important additions that allowed the park to host huge social and political events year round, making the park more economically viable.

The park was sold in 1969 for $1.2 million to Irwin Cohen of New York, and again in 1973 to a group of investors led by entrepreneur Henry Vara for $2.5 million. They incorporate their venture as Captain Rocky, Inc., Rocky Point amusements Inc., and Kiddy Land, Inc. Conrad Ferla stayed on as general manager.

As entertainment tastes changed, new attractions, rides, and concerts were added to keep pace. As the 1980’s progressed, Conrad Ferla left after a dispute with management and the park began a slow decline. Rocky Point found it difficult to compete against newer theme parks like Six Flags. As the economy of Rhode Island slowed and industries moved away, so did outing business, a critical source of park revenue.

By the late 80’s and early 90’s, even as headline bands continued their acts and President George Bush visited, Rocky Point was in financial death throws.

End of an Era With yearly revenues averaging $6 to $7 million a year, it wasn’t enough to pay the loans, taxes, and bills from other business ventures that Vera accrued. With payment plans going unpaid and state and city officials looking to suspend licenses and tax sales, Rocky Point Amusements Inc. and its associated companies filed for chapter 11 bankruptcy protections in November of 1994. Reorganization efforts were tried but failed. On January 27th, 1995, Rocky Point’s last ‘official’ love story took place, as a wedding reception held that day became the final function at the amusement park.

An auction was held in 1996 to sell off the park’s rides and valuables. The park has essentially been abandoned ever since. Slowly, the buildings of the Midway were claimed by the elements and fires.

While rumors of condominium development swirled, the United States Small Business Association became court appointed administrator of the park in July, 2003. Warwick eventually purchased the 41 acres of Rocky Point shoreline in 2007 with state and federal funding. After a series of suspicious fires that same year, Warwick city officials ordered the demolition of nearly all the remaining structures. Only the Shore Dinner Hall, the Palladium and Windjammer remained standing.

Following bankruptcy, the park was taken into receivership by the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) in July of 2003. The SBA, looking to try to repay the amusement park’s debts, tried for years to sell the land for residential development, but those efforts failed.

In 2008, Warwick acquired 41 acres, made possible through a federal grant, with matching funds from the city and DEM. This purchase assured public access to the property’s coast. The city created a walking path along the entire shoreline.

The Rocky Point Foundation, a non-profit established in 2009 to help preserve and protect the natural and historic environment of the Park, successfully lobbied for a ballot proposal which provided $10 million to acquire the remaining land from the SBA to establish a public park. On November 3, 2010, 64 percent of Rhode Island voters approved the issuing of state bonds to purchase the remainder of Rocky Point.

The last 82 acres of park were handed to the state of Rhode Island in March of 2013, and DEM is currently responsible for the property.

A Look to the Future

The first stages in efforts to transform the property into a new coastal state park have begun. DEM began demolition and site restoration on the state-owned portion of the land in July. Work includes site preparation for asbestos removal and demolition of remaining structures, including the Shore Dinner Hall, the Palladium and Windjammer, and the remaining cottages. This phase is expected to take 75 to 90 days to complete, with a cost of more than $3 million.

According to DEM, the future development of Rocky Point Park will be a collaborative process. The state will seek public-private partnerships to minimize the use of state resources while maximizing return for all involved. They will explore federal funding opportunities for parkland development, and build on the success of its partnership with Warwick.

Potential improvements to the park include fishing access, a pier, walking paths, fields and other recreational amenities.

The demolition process will be complete by the fall. All 124 acres will be available for public use. The first time in nearly two decades.

Rocky Point has always been the funhouse mirror of Rhode Island, offering an escape from the hassle of the real world.

Access to a cleaned up park promises to rekindle memories, and again allow the park to become a place for every generation to celebrate. While reflections in funhouse mirrors never look like the original, perhaps the future of Rocky Point will be even brighter than its past.

Fall targeted for Rocky Point opening... but that’s just the beginning The state’s plan is to re-open all of Rocky Point this fall. It will be a different place than the amusement park that closed in 1995, or the overgrown site of collapsing buildings, debris piles and crumbling parking lots of today.

Other than select elements of the former park, including the arch and the stanchions of the Sky Liner ride, the deteriorating structures will be gone. The former midway will be cleaned up, graded and seeded at a cost of more than $3 million.

As Larry Mouradjian, associate director of Natural Resources at the Department of Environmental Management (DEM) told an audience of planners, educators and citizens this past June, the opening will be an opportunity for the public to see what they “invested in” when they approved a bond issue to buy the land in 2010.

What they will find is an empty canvas.

How that canvas is to be filled, what the Rocky Point of the future will incorporate was the theme to the meeting held in June at the Save the Bay offices at Field’s Point; and hosted by the Rocky Point Foundation and the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD).

Point; Warwick Mayor Scott Avedisian and Governor Lincoln Chafee highlighted their visions; and Elizabeth Mossop, principal with the New Orleans landscape architecture firm, Spackman Mossop Michaels, talked about how park design has changed.

Fultineer said RISD plans to use Rocky Point as a “design studio” and teaching tool for the next couple of years.

Development at the park is not projected to come quickly, nor without community input and discussion.

“We know how important they [parks] are to healthy lifestyles and to community building. We also know that they can be a significant part of economic development, of attracting both investment and new populations,” Mossop said in opening remarks. She called the park a substantial site with wonderful coastline and access to swimming, accessible by public transportation offering a “diversity of topography and ecological experiences.”

Chafee urged support of the $75 million clean water, open space and healthy communities bond issue he has proposed for the November ballot that will include $2.5 million to rebuild the park pier. Ferry service between Colt Park and other locations on the bay is envisioned.

“We can connect some of our jewels,” said Chafee.

The plan is to leave the park’s former entrance as access for pedestrians, with vehicular access from the park’s former exit on Palmer Avenue. Parking would be in the area of where the Palladium is today.

Avedisian sees Rocky Point as a rare opportunity. He said, when the city of Warwick bought the 41 acres from the Small Business Administration, a mile of shoreline was saved. Now the state land there adds 122 acres on the water.

“We want to get this right,” he said. “We now have all the pieces and it’s putting them together.”

Angry Lobster Events

To say the week before Chris Keenan, founder of Angry Lobster Events, and I were able to connect was hectic would be an understatement of epic proportions. After intense planning, she was approaching the culmination of her efforts – a new three-day Bluegrass Festival held at Rhodes on the Pawtuxet over July 4 to 6. Once we were able to speak, the first thing I noticed was the passion emanating from her voice as she spoke about her love of music and education.

“One of my biggest regrets in life is never learning to play a musical instrument,” said Chris. “I want to do whatever I can to make sure no young people today have this same regret down the road.”

A newly-formed nonprofit, Angry Lobster Events’ mission is to expand the horizon of music in Rhode Island while focusing on ways to better engage the state’s youth with the timeless art. In starting with the Bluegrass Festival, which included support from the Rhode Island Bluegrass Alliance, and celebrating, as Chris described, “America’s music on America’s birthday in one of America’s historically-significant villages,” the group feels the potential is near limitless.

“I’m extremely proud of how our first festival went – 90 percent of the feedback we’ve received, if not more, has been overwhelmingly positive; it was a great mix of musicians,” she explained. “I don’t think it’s a stretch to say that as the festival grows, it can become not only a strong economic factor for the area, but also a means for getting more students involved with music.”

Helping to foster a love of music among students with declining access to school-based arts classes in recent years – statistics indicate the number of artsbased teachers in Providence has been reduced by half over the past 10 years – is where Chris wants her organization to make the biggest difference.

Though born and raised in Rhode Island, Keenan now lives in Ireland, often making the trek back across the Atlantic to visit family and friends. In Ireland, her success coordinating music festivals that integrate local schools and an educational component provides a model for what’s possible in the Ocean State.

Prior to a festival’s opening day, Keenan organizes visits to schools by participating musicians, giving students an opportunity to meet people at the pinnacle of their profession who can talk about their experiences and encourage young people to follow their dreams. She sees this as an important way to fill the void of exposure to music that she feels dwindles with each passing day.

“Education is such a big part of music, yet it’s being offered less and less in high school,” she said. “It’s great for students to be exposed to music in elementary school, but for a lot of young people, they begin to develop their interests as teenagers in high school, and if they find that they’re drawn to music but don’t have the opportunity to get involved, what happens?”

Keenan also realizes that for many families, particularly during these difficult economic times, it can often be difficult to afford the expenses associated with music – particularly the cost of instruments. It’s why as Angry Lobster Events continues to grow and expand its festival offerings, it hopes to generate the kind of funds that not only help to put free instruments in the hands of children, but that can also help launch after-school music programs.

“I know there are a lot of young people out there with incredible talent but who may never have the opportunity to develop it,” explained Keenan. “This is where I want to be able to help.”

Another way the organization demonstrates its commitment to music exposure and education – while also bringing in funds that will support its work with young students – is through the master class workshops they offer local musicians.

With limited space available in each class; Keenan’s goal is to keep the atmosphere intimate, musicians looking to take the next step in their career are able to receive personalized lessons from artists they admire. Prior to last month’s Bluegrass on the Pawtuxet festival, classes included banjo playing with Mike Kropp, guitar playing with Tim Stafford, a songwriting and vocal workshop August 2014

“Just as there’s an importance to exposing students to established musicians, there’s a lot of benefit in helping up-and-coming musicians connect with and learn from those they admire,” added Keenan. “Musicians are incredible believers in paying it forward.”

Angry Lobster Events has big plans for the future, and Keenan hopes that as the organization continues to develop, it will attract even more musicians – of all ability levels – willing to get involved. “I really want people to know that although Angry Lobster Events is a new nonprofit, we are a vibrant group dedicated to bringing music back as a vital part of our state’s culture,” said Chris. “There’s a lot of great music happening around here, but I think there can be more – especially if we do a better job engaging those young people who now have fewer opportunities to fall in love with music.”

Considered one of the most influential groups in contemporary Bluegrass, Blue Highway was the headlining act of Angry Lobster Events’ inaugural “Bluegrass on the Pawtuxet” Festival held July 4-6. Proceeds from the event will directly support the organization’s efforts to get students with few musical opportunities engaged with the arts.

Debra Greenhalgh has been dispelling those myths for the past 30 years.

Virtually anybody who wants to glimpse the wonders of life under the surface can scuba dive. At Scuba Made Easy: Live Life Wet, in Jamestown, she teaches adults with disabilities, including Wounded Warriors.

She has taught students who cannot walk, who cannot use their arms. Some students have arthritis, Parkinson’s, multiple sclerosis, paraplegia, and major burns.

She explained, “The wet suits are easy to put on, and we will adapt the equipment. All a person must do is kick a little.” Indeed, she notes “many people after diving say that they felt less pain, greater flexibility.”

Recently Debra was awarded the Presidents’ Volunteer Service award – the Points of Light – for her work with disabled veterans.

As for age, she has taught children, as well as octogenarians.

Furthermore, Mark Spitz-type skills are not necessary. “Swimming requirements are to be able to swim for 10 minutes any stroke; you don’t have to be an Olympic swimmer,” she said.

Again, though, Debra can modify equipment for people who cannot move easily. Ditto for stamina: you are not moving quickly, trying to cover large distances.

Instead, the point is to move slowly, to open your eyes and see the rich life before you. This is not an endurance-sport, but a recreation.

Deep sea diving, moreover, is not the same as diving from a diving board. You walk into the water, or enter from a boat. As for exotic lands, Rhode Island

scuba divers need not go to the Caribbean or the Great Barrier Reef. Rhode Island’s many state parks offer easy inexpensive access. You drive up, don your gear, and enter. She notes that scuba divers from Connecticut, Massachusetts, New York and New Jersey often drive to Rhode Island beaches. And while you may not want to dive on a snowy day in January, the wet suits keep you warm; the “season” runs eight months, from April through November.

Debra’s enthusiasm for diving is infectious. She wants her students to feel the same exhilaration she feels even today when she glimpses the multi-colored schools of fish swimming just below the surface of the water.

Debra was hooked on diving early. A “Navy brat,” she grew up on the East Coast. Early on she loved the ocean, tracing the lure to almost a genetic link to the ocean (“generations of fishermen came from the Netherlands to the United States”), and to television (“the television specials of Jacques Cousteau and reruns of ‘Sea Hunt’ with Lloyd Bridges intrigued me”). She laughingly notes that she learned to swim so she could scuba dive. In high school she took a summer science class at the University of Connecticut Project Oceanography at Avery Point, and won a science achievement award.

Her first dive happened at Fort Wetherill in Jamestown, and decades later she recounts the magic: “I was

spell-bound by the rays of light coming down through the ocean, which back-lit schools of fish all around. I was scuba diving amongst the ocean creatures, weightless, effortless, gliding, mesmerized by the experience.”

But initially diving was an avocation. Debra majored in mathematics at the University of New Haven, worked as an analyst, then earned a Master’s degree in software engineering at Carnegie Mellon University, and is now working toward a PhD in system engineering at the Naval Postgraduate School. Fifteen years ago, she decided that she loved the chance to mingle among the gorgeous sea creatures.

“I wanted to share that with others,” she said.

So she started the trek to certification as a scuba diving instructor/course director and deep-sea technical instructor, including specialized scuba certification in teaching people with disabilities. Along the way she took videos of what she, and her students, have seen. (www.scubamadeeasy.org) Debra makes students two promises. First, whatever their age, whatever their physical status, they can do it.

“I’ll have you in standup water the first day scuba diving, touching the sea,” she said.

Second, they will glimpse amazing, beautiful creatures. To hesitant beginners, she asks, “What is stopping you? Come join in this underwater adventure.”

Do you know that there is a world-class zoo covering over 200 acres with hundreds of animals less than a half hour from Providence?

After all these years, we finally discovered Southwick’s Zoo in nearby Mendon, Massachusetts, spending a leisurely day enjoying the sparkling clean, environmentally friendly, educational wildlife park.

The Homestead at Southwick’s dates back to 1803 and began as a dairy and vegetable farm in the early 1900’s. The zoo officially opened in 1963 and has grown to over 100 different species of animals from around the world, including many endangered species.

Justine Brewer (Southwick) is the latest descendent to manage the zoo, beginning with her grandfather and father. The future is in good hands, with Justine’s five adult children, including two construction engineers and a veterinarian working on location, along with 150 seasonal employees, and 30 full time staff. The zoo is open daily from April through October, 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Bring comfortable shoes, because you will be doing a lot of walking, with a chance to stop at a variety of rest stops, picnic areas, food venues, a train ride around the park, and a Skyfari tram towering over it.

Strollers, wagons and wheelchairs are available to rent. The outer trail is sandy and makes it a bit difficult for wheelchairs. The rest of the area is macadam, but occasionally sloped, so the wheelchair pusher gets a workout, but are many places to stop and rest.

There are so many things to see and do, and programs and exhibits are constantly changing, assuring that you will want to return again and again. (Season passes are available.)

Highlights for us included the Exotic Bird Show, the rare white hippos, the variety of monkeys, and the prairie dog exhibit.

Hungry or thirsty? There are 8 food venues offering everything from ice cream to pizza, burgers, pulled pork and specialty dogs and sandwiches. The park is naturally shaded, with much attention given to the natural surroundings, both for animals and their human guests.

Staff members are everywhere and are very helpful. While the detailed map points out every venue, you can ask anyone with a badge to point you in the right direction.

You may ride a pony, camel or elephant, pet barnyard animals in the huge petting zoo, or walk among the deer in the deer forest. There is an Earth Discovery Center, where we’ll spend more time on our next visit. Parents had a tough time dragging the younger ones from the many play areas.

Rules and guidelines are listed on the back of the brochure/map and are all common sense, asking everyone to “Please treat the animals with the respect they deserve; Remember, this is their home.”

While Southwick’s is close to Rhode Island, our GPS was helpful in getting us there after traveling north on Route 95 to Route 146 and taking the Route 102/Forestville exit toward Wright’s Farm. The remaining short distance takes you on back country roads through the charming town of Millville, MA. Follow signs to Rt. 122, then a short distance on Chestnut Hill Rd. to Vineyard St. and Southwick St. Admission to Southwick’s is $22. Children ages 3-12 and seniors 62 and over are $17. There is a combo tickets that includes all mechanical rides for $30.

In Search of the Perfect Lawn Chair Summer’s here, the time when we drag the patio furniture from the basement storage and tune up the barbecue grill. Or maybe your furniture is kept overhead in the garage and you’re a fan of cold salads.

Either way, you’re probably thinking about replacing some of your seasonal seating before Labor Day is upon us.

Whether it’s in the front yard, on the back deck or in a sunny spot at the local shore, there’s a place in everyone’s summer life where they like to stretch out on a comfortable lawn chair. Notice that we call it a “lawn” chair even if it sits on a slate patio, a wooden pallet or a sandy beach. The more time you spend on it, the more you appreciate the importance of finding the perfect lawn chair.

When I was working full time, this wasn’t a major concern. I sat down so infrequently on weekends that an aluminum folding chair with missing webbing was just fine. Or one of those stackable plastic ones you find in the promotional aisle at the supermarket every Spring. Now that I’m retired and we’re ready to downsize, I expect to spend a lot of time relaxing outdoors. This realization sent me in search of the perfect lawn chair.

My first stop was one of those pseudo-hardware stores that load up on seasonal supplies, changing much of their stock four times a year. I tried out updated versions of my webbed aluminum beach chair. One model had straps so narrow that they cut into my ample fanny, leaving parts of me drooping through the gaps. Another one, with wider straps, had no give at all, which meant no air circulation.

Not a good design for the hot sun.

I found one with webbing that seemed just right, so I sat down. Because I’m short (one half inch shorter than last year, according to my GP), my feet didn’t touch the ground unless I pointed my toes, giving me a cramp. A similarly-webbed option looked closer to the ground. When I tried it out, I discovered it was too close to Mother Earth. My knees accordioned under my chin and I had to tip the chair on its side to get out of it.

I headed to one of the larger home goods stores that have an entire section devoted to patio and garden needs. Not a single chair there had webbing or an aluminum frame. This boded well. Instead we had “genuine California redwood” and “environmentallysensitive repurposed plastic.” Be still my heart.

I jumped right into phase two of my assessment process: adjusting the tilt. I picked a friendly looking chair and set it at a promising angle before I sat down. I was pleased to see that my feet reached the ground but my knees didn’t hit my chin (or boobs).

The angle I had chosen was fine if I planned to do 12 | PrimeTime

some reading, but I needed to lean back more if I wanted to take a nap.

I moved the tilt lever (carefully, I thought) and instantly I was flat on my back with my shirtsleeve caught in the lever. I was virtually immobile. After about ten minutes, another shopper wandered by and rescued me. Being the adventurous type, I tried out several more loungers, with similar results. About an hour later (and after my fourth rescue), I decided to go back to the drawing board.

By drawing board, I mean my car, in which I drove to a specialty retailer that carries nothing but summer furniture. Here I discovered another criterion to narrow the choices in my search for the perfect lawn chair: price. My budget eliminated three-quarters of the stock displayed so invitingly throughout the store.

At least I had an attentive employee to help untangle me if necessary.

my salesperson asked an unexpected question: “Have you ever considered a hammock?” I resisted the urge to ask: “Have you considered having your head examined?” Instead I answered meekly: “My joints are Speaking of help,

creaky. I have zero core strength and even less balance.

Do you have a hammock that addresses those issues?”

It turns out he did not. But what he did have was the perfect lawn chair for me.

When I first sat down, I was practically standing up.

I pushed a button and it gently set me at just the right level for my height. I pushed another button, and it tilted me back for a snooze. It came with a waterproof cover and a spare power pack. It even had (wait for it…) a special cup holder for my wine cooler!

It also came with a price tag that placed it well into that three-quarters of their stock above my budget. I bought it anyway. Let’s face it. The perfect lawn chair is priceless.

The residents here at the Scandinavian Home are lovingly attended to ~ from the engaged caregivers to the creative activities staff to the skilled therapists and nurses. This is a place where seniors can live with grace, dignity . . . and with plenty to do!

The Scandinavian Home, which consists of a Skilled Nursing & Rehabilitation Center and Assisted Living Community, has been serving the community for over 80 years. With a capacity of seventy-four beds in their skilled nursing unit, and thirty-five spacious apartments in their assisted living center, this neighborly home has been accommodating seniors and rehabilitating patients for many decades.

The summer of 2013 marked the beginning of big changes here at the Scandinavian Home as the first shovel of earth was broken to commence massive renovations. The goal here has been to update the entire nursing facility, from floor to ceiling. Now, those warm creams and yellows gleam on freshly painted walls. Wheelchairs and walkers make their way across newly laid floors. Resident rooms have been given such improvements as new furniture, lighting and even flat-screen TVs! The upgraded state-of-the-art therapy room is abuzz with activity and the central nurses’ station now provides more efficiency and privacy for residents, family members and staff alike. There is a shine and polish here that have given the Scandinavian Home ~ and its many residents ~ a whole new lease on life.

In the assisted living community the showcase piece is the newly constructed bright and inviting dining room. The former adjacent dining room is being transformed into a multi-use space complete with a gas fireplace and a comfortable pub area. These two rooms will easily function for large gatherings as well as small intimate gathering spaces.

While the buildings have been transformed, the focus here remains the same ~ to offer an environment that is small enough to respond to every resident’s need, yet big enough to offer many care options.

The final touches at Scandinavian Home are due within the next few months, and until then, the Director of Resident Services in the Assisted Living community is extending an incredible offer to any new, incoming residents. When today’s nursing center residents gather for group activities, their choices range far beyond the stereotypical Bingo games of the past. According to Cindy Pereira, Director of Activities for Hebert Nursing Home in Smithfield, Bingo remains a popular pastime, but planning activities for residents has changed dramatically.

“It’s much more challenging now because our patient population is so diverse in terms of age, culture, medical and psychosocial needs. It’s no longer enough to just run Bingo games and have entertainment. We also have much younger residents and patients who have very different needs than our older population,” says Pereira.

In fact, “Resident Activities” is no longer defined as a general calendar of monthly events posted on a community bulletin board. According to the Rhode Island Regulations for the Licensing of Nursing Facilities, an activities program must “be person-centered, appropriate to the needs and interests of each individual resident, encourage self-care, engage residents in activities that are important to the resident, and assist in the maintenance of an optimal level of psychosocial functioning, socialization, and quality of life.”

That’s a mouthful of regulatory legalese! What it means is simply that resident activities must be tailored to resident interests. To achieve “personcentered” activities programming, nursing center staff must work as a team to discover the needs and preferences of each individual in their care. To ensure that activities achieve the maximum benefit, they must understand a resident’s mental and physical abilities and/or limitations, communication abilities, and even biological rhythms (e.g. preferred time to wake up or go to bed.) The collaborative team of nurses, nursing assistants, social workers, rehabilitation staff, and activities staff meet regularly to discuss their observations, and create individualized care plans that include ways to overcome any obstacles to meaningful activity.

For example, at Hebert Nursing Home, caregivers discovered that a shy female resident who feels uncomfortable in large groups once loved to play the piano. Therefore an activity assis-

tant, whose main role is one-on-one activities, now visits her regularly in the privacy of her room, bringing along an iPad with a piano application. This commonplace device opens up a whole world of opportunity for the resident to enjoy a favorite pastime that was unavailable before.

In fact, technology has become invaluable to the development of personcentered activities. With the touch of a screen, a resident who loves Kate Smith is able to hear “God Bless America,” bringing an instant smile. Facilities provide Wi-Fi for short-term patients toting laptops during their rehab stay, and Skype for long stay residents so they can visit grandchildren. Interactive and group activities such a restaurant and shopping outings, pet therapy, and art classes encourage socialization and round out programming that ensures that all residents feel engaged and stimulated.

While federal law states that an activity department must be directed by a “qualified professional,” Rhode Island does not require certification. However, Ms. Pereira, who is also current president of the Activities Directors of Rhode Island (ADARI), encourages her members to become certified by the National Certification Council for Activity Professionals (NCCAP), a certifying organization recognized by Federal law.

She firmly believes that ongoing, professional development is important to support the challenge of person-centered activities.

Towards that end, ADARI arranges a variety of educational programs for its members. Upcoming programs include a seminar on Challenging Behaviors offered by Butler Hospital, and a training course on Montessori Method for Seniors.

Whether you like to play the ponies, roll the dice or pull the slots, your gambling winnings are taxable. You must report all your gambling income on your tax return. If you’re a casual gambler, odds are good that these basic tax tips can help you at tax time next year: 1. Gambling income. Gambling income includes winnings from lotteries, horse racing and casinos. It also includes cash prizes and the fair market value of prizes like cars and trips.

2. Payer tax form. If you win, you may get a Form W-2G, Certain Gambling Winnings, from the payer. The IRS also gets a copy of the W-2G. The payer issues the form depending on the type of game you played, the amount of your winnings and other factors. You’ll also get the form if the payer withholds taxes from what you won.

3. How to report winnings. You must report all your gambling winnings as income. This is true even if you don’t receive a Form W-2G. You normally report your winnings for the year on your tax return as “other income.”

4. How to deduct losses. You can deduct your gambling losses on Schedule A, Itemized Deductions. The amount you can deduct is limited to the amount of the gambling income you report on your return.

5. Keep gambling receipts. You should keep track of your wins and losses.

This includes keeping items such as a gambling log or diary, receipts, statements or tickets.

Heat Stress can have serious consequences

Remember those cold, snowy days in February when we were looking forward to warm summer weather? Get ready. The triple “H” weather (hot, hazy and humid) is on the horizon.

As enjoyable as summer can be, it can also pose significant health risks to seniors, those with chronic medical conditions or persons with compromised immune systems. Heat waves can bring on heat-related illnesses.

As we get older, our ability to handle extreme weather conditions diminishes. Illness, a changing metabolism and certain medications can affect our ability regulate body temperature. These are major factors in making someone more susceptible to heat stress and heat exhaustion.

Each year, we review the causes, symptoms, treatment and preventive measures associated with heat-related illnesses. Keep this information handy for those sultry summer days ahead.

Heat exhaustion is the mild form of heat-related illness. Heat exhaustion can develop after several days of exposure to high temperatures and humidity or dehydration. Some of the symptoms of heat exhaustion include heavy sweating, paleness, muscle cramps, weakness, dizziness, headache, nausea, fainting or a rapid and weak pulse.

Heat stroke is more serious. Heat stroke occurs when the body loses its ability to control its temperature and is unable to sweat and cool down. Body temperatures can rise to 106 degrees or more within a very short time frame. If not treated quickly, heat stress can cause permanent health damage, disability, or even death.

Some of the symptoms of heat stroke include a body temperature of 103 or more; red, hot, or dry skin; lack of perspiration; headache; dizziness or nausea.

If you suspect that a senior is the victim of heat stroke, take immediate action.

• Call 911 for medical assistance.

• Get the person into a shady area.

• Cool the person down by whatever means is available. Place the person in a cool bath or shower. Spray them with a garden hose. Sponge the person with cool water. Wrap them in a cool sheet and continue to fan him/her.

• If you can, monitor the person’s body temperature. Try to get it to 101 or 102 degrees before medical help arrives. When the medical team arrives, tell them the person’s body temperature if you know it.

• Do not give the person alcohol to drink.

• If medical help is delayed, call your local hospital emergency room for additional instructions.

To avoid heat-related illnesses, take these precautions: • Stay hydrated. Drink cool, non-alcoholic beverages. Avoid extremely cold drinks because they can cause cramps.

• Stay indoors in air-conditioned rooms. If you don’t have air-conditioning, go to air-conditioned venues such as the senior center, mall, or public library.

• During prolonged periods of extreme heat, the Rhode Island Emergency Management Agency publishes a list of “cooling centers” across the state.

During a heat emergency, call the Division of Elderly Affairs at 462-3000, or go to www.dea.ri.gov to locate the nearest “cooling center.” The Elderly Affairs TTY number is 462-0740. The Emergency Management Agency number is 946-9996. Their web site is www.riema.ri.gov.

• Take a cool shower or sponge bath.

• Wear lightweight clothing.

• Avoid strenuous activity such as mowing the lawn or vigorous exercise during a heat wave.

If you have older relatives or friends, check on them daily during a heat wave to see how they are doing. Make sure that they are drinking enough liquids. If you see any signs of heat exhaustion or heat stroke, take immediate action. If they don’t have air conditioning, try to get them to an air-conditioned location and arrange for them to get home later in the day.

Elder abuse victims have a place to be cared for It’s difficult for seniors to feel comfortable in domestic violence shelters, but the Saint Elizabeth Community aims to offer a safe haven for elderly victims. The Saint Elizabeth Haven, a program for elderly victims of abuse, is committed to victims of emotional, physical and financial abuse.

Director of Community Outreach Mary Rossetti said the program is for usually dire situations. Their victims have experienced family or caretakers’ taking of funds, keeping them locked in rooms and are sometimes bruised from physical altercations.

“There is lots of abuse out there, but it doesn’t always require someone stepping in, requiring that the victim leave their home,” she said.

This is the only program in the state that offers this kind of protection for the elderly, according to Steven Horowitz, the president and CEO who adapted the idea following a trip to New York where he learned about a safe haven program for seniors.

“Domestic violence shelters don’t offer the right care for elderly men,” he said. “I wanted to create a setting more conducive.” Because victims of abuse are often women, men lack treatment and care from the usual shelters, he said.

To seek help from the Safe Haven program, a victim must be referred by one of the many partners Saint Elizabeth works with. Among the 16 partners are the Elizabeth Buffum Chace Center, Meals on Wheels, Rhode Island Attorney General’s Office, Rhode Island Department of Elderly Affairs and Westbay Community Action and police departments.

“We need to work with our partners with the situation that was occurring,” said Horowitz.

As police deal with the case, Saint Elizabeth’s social workers work with the victims. Duration of a stay with the program is contingent on the living and physical conditions of the victim.

“We often return victims [to homes] with different care givers who can better assist them,” said Rossetti.

The Rhode Island General Assembly has recognized problems occur between seniors and caregivers.

The Rhode Island Senate approved legislation June 5 to require criminal background checks for individuals applying to be providers. The legislation

now goes to the House of Representatives for their approval.

In a press release, Sen. Frank Lombardi said, “This is another step to ensure the safety of our state’s elderly, who rely on others for the proper care.”

The bill would automatically update an individual’s criminal history using the state’s national background check system. The current system does not notify employers of crimes committed after a caregiver has been hired.

“We must be serious about checking the background of individuals who work in the general occupation of dealing with the elderly,” said Lombardi.

Since 2009, the Saint Elizabeth Haven program has admitted 12 people.

Their records show a minimum stay of four days and a maximum of 66.

“If we only took one victim [in], that would mean the program was worth it,” said Horowitz.

Rossetti and Horowitz said that it’s difficult to advertise a place where someone might seek shelter.

“We’re respectful of victims’ privacy,” said Horowitz.

He said they bring their information to organizations and to their partners who will recognize abuse and bring the victims to Saint Elizabeth.

“We depend a lot on our partners,” said Rossetti.

She added that all citizens should report any abuse and self-neglect they witness. Abuse reports can be made by calling 462-0555, the Rhode Island Division of Elderly Affairs.

Arthritis and Falls

CDC report makes correlation; network suggests plans The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recently released a study that makes a correlation between falls and individuals with arthritis.

The CDC reports that those with arthritis have a higher percentage of falling and are more likely to injure themselves during a fall than those without the ailment.

The CDC said that over 100 rheumatic disease and conditions that affect joint inflammation or tissues could be referred to as arthritis. It typically affects people 45 and older.

For the study, the CDC analyzed the 2012 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS). This random digit survey asked participants about their arthritis as well as the number and severity of the falls they experienced in the past year to evaluate the similarities and differences throughout the country.

The CDC found for Rhode Island that 15.3 percent of people with arthritis experienced one fall compared to the 10.1 percent without arthritis. Arthritic individuals were more apt to have a fall than those without. The risk arthritis poses for sufferers become more apparent in the CDC’s numbers for Rhode Islanders with two or more falls within the surveyed year and those falls that caused injury.

A total of 17.5 percent of those surveyed with arthritis had two or more falls whereas only 8.1 percent of non-arthritic people experienced two or more falls in the year; 14.9 percent of arthritis sufferers had falls that led to injuries and 6.5 percent of non-arthritic participants had similar injury experiences.

The report said that, “Falls are the leading cause of injury-related morbidity and mortality among older adults, with more than one in three older adults falling each year, resulting in direct medical costs of nearly $30 billion.”

With arthritis growing rapidly throughout the U.S. population and arthritis sufferers at a higher risk for falls, the CDC wrote, “ The increase in adults with arthritis (an estimated 67 million by 2030) demonstrate[s] the need for increasing fall prevention efforts.”

The CDC, in conjunction with their findings, has also provided methods in which to relieve arthritis pain and hopefully lessen the possibility of a fall and its possible consequent injuries.

The CDC encourages those suffering from arthritis pain to naturally relieve arthritic pain with exercise. Weight loss relieves pressure on the joints as well as releases pain reducing chemicals.

“Effective fall prevention interventions can be multifaceted, but the most effective single strategy involves exercise or physical therapy to improve gait, balance, and lower body strength, which have been shown to reduce fall risk by 14 to 37 percent.

The state of Rhode Island’s Department of Health acknowledges the increasing issue arthritis is posing to the public and is trying to offer methods in which to help arthritis sufferers.

Director of Health Michael Fine, M.D., said, “One of the best ways to manage arthritis and decrease the chances of a fall is to remain physically active. Physical activity will help improve your balance, help you maintain a healthy weight, and will strengthen your muscles and bones. If you have arthritis, or if you experience stiffness or pain in your joints, talk to your doctor about the type of management plan that will be best for you.”

The department has created a Community Health Network that offers information on programs that deal with specific ailments. The programs offered to arthritis sufferers include the Arthritis Foundation Exercise Program, which is a recreational exercise program developed to help arthritis sufferers and the pain they experience. A certified instructor would meet with a group for one hour twice a week for six weeks.

The Arthritis Foundation Walk with Ease Program group sessions meet three times a week for six weeks to work on balance and walking pace with participants.

The Living Well Rhode Island, Chronic Disease Self-Management program works with participants to manage symptoms, medications, doctor appointments and family discussions. Each week there will be goals to improve the lifestyles of those involved. The group meets two-and-a-half hours a week for six weeks.

Lastly, YMCA Enhance Fitness program is a 16-week program where individuals participate in exercises that aim to improve strength flexibility, balance and cardiovascular fitness while reducing arthritis pain.

An August Agenda My first RISD August, (I won’t tell you the year I was hired) I told my new department head, over cocktails (negronis) at his Athenaeum apartment, something that made him laugh with glee and welcome me cordially and collegially into the liberal arts community. I said, “every month of each passing season has its own depression and gloom!”

The problem with the 8th month is, that despite its iconic full moon, the days are getting ever shorter, and you will have to report on what you did with the privilege of your vacation. So, what have I been up to? What can cure the recurring sense, that you haven’t done enough, had sufficient fun, amused your spouse or your kith and kin and colleagues adequately?

For me, the answer lies within the wee pages of the tiny engagement calendar I got before Father’s Day. Uh, let’s see. Flipping back a bit, my son and daughter brought me an ungiftwrapped bottle of Hendrick’s gin for that occasion. I supply my own good tonic water: Fever Tree Indian. A slice of lime and my late afternoons are accounted for. I’ll be going back to bourbon next month.

July’s accomplishments: I’ve jumped into lakes in Coventry and in Charlestown. I’ve dived (or tip-toed) into the surf or river in Narragansett, South Kingstown, and Jerusalem/Snug Harbor. I saw “Ida” and “Railway Man” and watched some wondrous scenes from the selections of TCM on television: so much for my midsummer de-briefing. Most dramatic, I toasted a bride and have another wedding to celebrate on the first upcoming weekend of August. Like Thoreau, I especially like to travel much on my own personal planet, the merely local, the easy nearby. Nevertheless, my little black book announces that I am due to take a major motor trip to Maine---to Rockport--for the

marriage of my son’s friend, our neighbor’s son, “Ben”.

I hope also to pop in on a cousin who dwells there-two pilgrimages on the same weekend. Two birds with one stone.

Happiness for me at this point consists of very small daily events. I’ll sum up the pleasures. How fresh is the piece of fruit I slice to add to my corn flakes?

Can I have my first coffee (never de-caf ) (always percolated) in a proper ceramic cup with a saucer and a spoon and sugar from a silver bowl?

Is there a bird chirping as I step outside to pick up the newspaper?

Is there a comic strip on the funnies page that expresses my dilemma of the day, that I can cut out with a pair of scissors and put in my wallet?

For my second cuppa of the day, will I find somebody at the café to have a genuine conversation with?

Somebody who both talks and listens, a person who won’t spout political opinions or stir up controversy but just pass a few moments of greeting while the sparrows chirp in the shrubbery? I sure hope so. Nice piece of cheese in the “ice box” for me to nibble at noon, or even earlier? Will the post box at the corner of my summerhouse street contain a stamped postcard, perhaps from a student pursuing a purposeful pathway on the planet? Will somebody ring me up or stop by with an adventurous idea for the afternoon? A canoe in the back of his truck? Another August high spot, at twilight before the August fireflies, is just to sit on the Wall near the Towers and tip my hat to the passersby. If I’m feeling down, patting somebody’s dog can lift me up, or seeing a butterfly like a cheerful memory flitting by and disappearing like a fleeting thought.

Will the corn I purchase be sweet and perfect, not yesterday’s leftovers?

The hours go by, and I find in closing that there’s no way of knowing how good or ill the day in August has been spent until somebody asks the usual question.

“How’s it going?” And then, after that excellent ear of corn or sip of gin or cup of coffee or tea, you come up with a funny answer, or a surprise re-discovery of a detail that made your day. It can be a single flower popping up unexpectedly through a broken piece of cement sidewalk, or a pair of cute baby’s feet sticking out from a smug stroller in downtown Wakefield.

Make your own joy, and hum the tune to the lyrics of an old song, and smile at your own private joke, and sing, “Enjoy yourself, it’s later than you think!”

Thoreau claimed that “wilderness” preserves our world. My next door neighbor throughout August believes that a large creature haunts our intimate shared yard and makes a mess. She says it’s a bear. Down from a high hill. Before migration all creatures great and small have to find their happiness and then pack up and face their own music.

Strawberry Pink Moscato Ice Pops Prep time: 15 minutes (plus at least 10 hours to freeze) Cook time: 1 minute • Servings: 16

Fruity layer:

cup sugar cup water pound ripe strawberries, hulled pinch of fine sea salt fluid ounces Gallo Family Pink Moscato

Creamy layer: 1

Moscato Meatball Skewers

To make fruity layer, combine sugar and water in small saucepan. Heat over low, stirring until sugar dissolves. Remove from heat and let cool completely.

Add cooled syrup, strawberries and salt to jar of blender and puree until almost smooth, leaving bit of texture. Stir in pink moscato.

Prep time: 15 minutes • Cook time: 30 minutes • Servings: 32 meatballs

2 pounds bulk spicy Italian sausage

1/2 cup Gallo Family Vineyards Red Moscato

1 cup plain Greek yogurt

1/4 cup extra virgin olive oil

1/2 cup diced cucumber

1 lemon

1/4 cup cilantro, chopped

Parmesan cheese, optional Preheat oven to 350°F. In large bowl, stir together sausage and Moscato until combined. Using medium cookie scoop, form meatballs and place on baking sheet, evenly spaced. Bake for 2530 minutes or until no longer pink.

To make creamy layer, place everything into a 4-cup capacity measuring cup with a spout and whisk together until well combined.

Moscato Moscow Mule Servings: 1

Meanwhile, in small bowl stir together all other ingredients to create yogurt sauce.

4 ounces ginger beer 3 ounces Gallo Family Vineyards Moscato 1 ounce lime juice 1 lime wheel 1 mint sprig for garnish

Thread meatballs onto skewers and serve alongside yogurt sauce. Garnish with additional cilantro and grated Parmesan cheese, if desired.

Pour ginger beer, Moscato and lime juice into ice-filled copper mug. Garnish with lime wheel and mint sprig.

can (14 ounce) sweetened condensed milk cups half and half cup heavy cream tablespoon orange blossom water pinch of fine sea salt

To freeze, fill ice pop molds about one-fifth of way with either mixture (layers can be any size or amount you choose). Put in freezer until first layer is set enough to hold another layer, 60-90 minutes. Store mixtures in fridge between layers.

Remove and fill another one-fifth with opposite mixture. Return to freezer until layer is set. Repeat until molds are filled to top, adding ice pop sticks in once third layer is added (adjust to type of ice pop mold).

After final layer is added, freeze at least another 6-8 hours before serving. To serve, run bottom of molds under hot water for few seconds, or until able to pull ice pop free from mold. (If using paper cup, just peel cup away.)

Note: If you don’t want layers, whisk mixtures together. You can also make each layer into its own ice pop, if you choose.
