If you’re already enrolled in VA health care, call your local VA health facility and ask for your initial screening for toxin exposure. Don’t wait on this; get a baseline test.

To get more information, call 800698-2411 (800-MYVA411).

Or go online to VA.gov/PACT and scroll through the information. You’ll find links to file for VA disability, a supplemental claim and more. Read about military exposures at www .publichealth.va.gov/exposures.

For all the millions the VA has spent to inform veterans about PACT, there are some they’re leaving out: members of the Maine National Guard who trained at the Canadian military support base in Gagetown, New Brunswick, Canada. In 1966 and 1967, the place was saturated with Agents Orange and Purple as a means of testing effectiveness in killing foliage.

In 2005, the Canadian government did site testing of the ground, water and air. They ended up handing out money to Canadians who’d been there.

Gagetown is still used for National Guard training, not only for units from Maine but other states as well. People became ill, of course, from exposure, but they’re not eligible for VA health care for exposure to Agent Orange or any of the other “rainbow” of toxin colors at Gagetown. © 2024 King Features Synd., Inc.

Stay Safe As You Get Back Outside

(NAPS)—Spring is coming, and as we get out our lawn mowers and other outdoor power equipment from storage to work in our yards, businesses and other green spaces, it’s important to put safe practices in place.

“Think safety first,” says Kris Kiser, President and CEO of the Outdoor Power Equipment Institute (OPEI), an international trade association representing outdoor power equipment, small engine, utility vehicle, golf car and personal transport vehicle manufacturers and suppliers. “We’re all eager to get back outside in the spring weather but I can’t stress enough to read your owner’s manuals before starting up any equipment—especially your lawn mower.”

OPEI offers these tips to get your outdoor power equipment ready, especially mowers:

Know not all lawn mowers are the same. Whether your mower is a garden tractor, zero-turn mower or other, it has a unique design, requirements, weight classification, and other differences that impact how to use it safely. The newest machines have the latest safety standards.

Know your specific machine. Many mowers may look similar but the technology is ever evolving, with evolving safety systems. They vary in design, power supply, performance, operating parameters, and more. Your manufacturer-supplied owner’s manual will guide you in these differences. Read your owner’s manual.

When using mowers on slopes follow the manufacturer’s guidance to the letter.

Do not disable or alter manufacturer-installed safety equipment.

Walk your yard before mowing. Slopes, wet grass and weather may impact the equipment’s performance, as well as safe handling procedures. Pick up sticks and limbs that may have fallen to the ground over the winter and any loose objects that could be hit by a mower. Inspect trees for damaged limbs

that may get in your way when mowing.

Look over equipment before use. Check the air filter, oil level and gasoline tank. Watch for loose belts and missing or damaged parts. Replace any parts needed or take your equipment to a qualified service representative. Check to be sure that you have the appropriate, manufacturer-recommended batteries, if needed.

Protect your power. Use only E10 or less fuel in gasoline-powered outdoor power equipment if it is not designed for higher ethanol blends. Add a fuel stabilizer if you don’t use up all the fuel in the tank right away. Burn off any fuel before storing the mower more than 30 days. Also, for battery-powered equipment, only use battery packs specified by the manufacturer. Follow all charging instructions as outlined in the owner’s manual. Be sure to store fuel and batteries safely. Keep batteries away from other metal objects, store them in a climate-controlled area, and never stack batteries.

Keep children and pets away from machines during operation.

Keep your mower clean. It will run more efficiently and last longer. Always remove dirt, oil or grass before using and storing, and store equipment in a dry place, avoiding damp or wet environments.

All Things Duct Cleaning

(NAPS)—There may be a problem lurking in your house that you can’t even see: dirty ducts. But that doesn’t have to be. The Issue

Even with the proper use of filters, your home’s heating and cooling system gets really dirty through normal, everyday use, just as surfaces in your home get dusty over time. All sorts of contaminants and air pollutants—bacteria, pet dander, dust, skin cells, mold, tobacco smoke, even chemicals—get pulled into an HVAC system and recirculate through the

home several times a day, building up in the system.

Tree removal, tree trimming & stump grinding. Free estimates. Contact 286-1407.

Worse, rodents and insects can chew their way into the ductwork to travel throughout your home, build nests and leave droppings. Telltale signs include chewed materials, unpleasant smells, and bacteria contaminating the air you breathe.

All this can contribute to poor indoor air quality and major health issues, especially for those with respiratory conditions, autoimmune disorders, asthma, or allergies. The EPA says poor indoor air increases your risk of pneumonia and causes irritated eyes, nose, and throat, headaches, dizziness, and fatigue.

THE REMINDER

In addition, when the system is clean, it doesn’t have to work as hard so it lasts longer and uses less energy, lowering electric bills.

A Second Issue

Getting your ducts cleaned, however, can mean another problem: Scams. The HVAC system cleaning industry is plagued with fraudulent “duct cleaners” who cause more harm than good by agitating rather than removing dust, debris, and pollutants or who charge for unneeded add-on services.

A Solution

Fortunately, you can trust the members of the National Air Duct Cleaners Association (NADCA). They have technicians on staff with advanced training and certification in HVAC system cleaning, and they’re required to follow higher standards.

To find qualified and certified air duct cleaning professionals, visit breathingclean.com.

Two Pickups and a Museum Visit in Virginia

Afew weeks ago, Jonathan and I had a house call to pick up a collection near Richmond, Virginia. We decided after we drove through Washington, DC., we would stop at the National Museum of the Marine Corps in Quantico, Virginia. I had driven by it many times in the past but never stopped. It happened to be February 19, the anniversary of the

Battle of Iwo Jima, so it was a good day for the visit.

I was a bit tired when we arrived, but soon woke up as we walked through the entrance and saw a Corsair hanging from the ceiling, a biplane, as well as a Hellcat and a Harrier jet. There were also vehicles set up in various scenarios, including a Pacific Island landing with Marines fighting from an LVT. Although we only had a couple of hours until closing, we took our time going through each section of the museum. It is laid out by period, and each section has many interesting things to see. The highlight for me was the first and second Iwo Jima flags which are not out on display all of the time. If

you haven’t been and are in the area, it’s certainly well worth it. Having been to the army museum at Ft. Belvoir, it does seem they used this museum as a basis for what was done there.

The next day we went to pick up a collection. To say I was blown away is an understatement. There was more Marine Corps and Navy material than I have ever seen in one place! It took most of the day to load up the van and start heading north again. I’m looking forward to going through all of the boxes of stuff and seeing what we took. There was so much it was hard to focus; We will actually heading back to pick up more items soon. I’ll write about some of the great objects in the collection in coming blogs.

On the way home, we picked up another collection of muskets and swords in New York state. It was on the west side of the Hudson River near West Point and was a really nice ride. We picked up some very cool things, and with all of the material we picked up in Virginia, we could barely fit this stuff in the van. We seriously thought we were going to have

to ditch our carry-on bags and jam our clothes under the seats to make it back!

Next week we head down to Maryland for the annual Baltimore Antique Arms show which is always a great time - as well as one of the last remaining big shows with lots of great early arms and militaria!

Last Minute Tax Tips

Even though it’s common knowledge that tax day is April 15 (April 18 for filing 2015 taxes in 2016), many people wait until the last minute to file their income taxes.

According to the Internal Revenue Service, 20-25 percent of Americans wait until the two weeks prior to the deadline to prepare their tax returns. To avoid scrambling as tax season draws to a close, here are some tips to help you prepare and file your taxes - even at the last minute.

Get Organized

One of the biggest tax time hassles for many is getting the necessary documents together. To make preparing your taxes go smoother, make sure you have the information you will need, including all of those forms that come in January, such as W-2s, 1099, mortgage interest statements, student loan statements and any receipts

related to moving, medical bills or work expenses before you sit down to file your return.

Itemize Your Deductions

While it’s easier to just take the standard deduction, you may be able to save more by itemizing - and it’s worth the added work if your qualified expenses add up to more than the 2015 standard deduction for an individual ($6,300) or married couple filing jointly ($12,600). Many deductions are well-known, including those for children, student loan or mortgage interest and charitable donations. However, there are other deductions available, such as job-related expenses, like work clothing and equipment, professional dues or business car expenses, that are deductible if the combined amount is more than 2 percent of your adjusted gross income, as well as medical expenses that exceed 10 percent of your adjusted gross income.

Get Help if You Need It

If you feel uncomfortable doing your taxes on your own, there are products and services available to help you file. You can speak with a tax professional to have them prepare your taxes or help you through the process, or use a computer program, which will help with everything from tracking deductions by answering simple questions, to selecting the correct forms for even the most complex returns while also allowing you to file electronically for a faster refund.

File Faster Online

Because the IRS processes electronic returns faster than mailed-in paper ones, there are several benefits that come with filing online, especially at the last minute when time is precious. Since online returns are processed faster, that means you can expect a faster refund - the wait time is even less if you elect to have your refund depos-

ited directly into your account. The IRS also checks electronically filed returns for completion and sends acknowledgement of receipt to put your mind at ease.

Consider Requesting an Extension

If you don’t think you’ll be able to finish your return on time, make sure to file for an extension using Form 4868 by April 18. Extensions are generally approved automatically and grant you a six-month extension to file. An extension to file, however, is not an extension to pay owed taxes, so paying your estimated balance due is imperative when it comes to avoiding late-payment fees. If you’re worried about paying what you owe, the IRS recommends filing your taxes or an extension and then setting up a payment plan.

No matter the reason for the delay in filing, getting prepared and taking advantage of available resources can help you beat the deadline and get best possible refund.

✷ 1ST & 3RD WEDNESDAYS ✷

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Stop being the wool-gathering Lamb and start turning that dream project into a reality. You have the ideas, drive and charisma to persuade others to follow your lead, so do it.

TAURUS (April 20 to May 20)

You’ve scored some big successes. But remember that all hard-working Ferdinands and Ferdinandas need some time to restore their energies and refresh their spirits.

GEMINI (May 21 to June 20)

You’re gaining a stronger mental image of what you’re trying to achieve. Now look for the facts that will help get this to develop from a concept into a solid proposal.

CANCER (June 21 to July 22)

Some of you eager-to-please Moon Children might want to delay some decisions until midweek, when you can again think more with your head than your heart.

LEO (July 23 to August 22) A new business venture seems to offer everything you’ve been looking for. But be careful that this rosy picture doesn’t betray traces of red ink under the surface.

VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) A volatile situation needs the kind of thoughtful and considerate care you can provide right now. There’ll be plenty of time later to analyze what might have gone wrong.

LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Your loyalty to a friend in a tough situation earns you respect from the people you care about. Those who criticize you don’t understand what friendship is all about.

SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Your strong work ethic is rewarded with the kind of challenging opportunity you love to tackle. Now go ahead and celebrate with family and/or close friends.

SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) A legal matter you thought had finally been resolved could require a second look. But don’t make any moves yet without consulting your lawyer.

CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Taking charge is what you like to do, and since you do it so well, expect to be asked to lead a special group. This could open up an exciting new vista for you.

AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) An important matter might wind up being entrusted to you for handling. The responsibility is heavy, but you’ll have support from people who are able and eager to help.

PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Avoid getting lost in your thoughts early on in the week. Stay grounded until the week’s end, when the aspects will give you a stroke of luck that can spur powerful action.
