Phoenix Dance Theatre: Triple Bill

Phoenix Dance Theatre’s latest tour will feature work by Itzik Galili, Kate Flatt, Sharon Watson and Caroline Finn.

The works will be performed as triple bills which vary from venue to venue and Beacon Arts Centre will be presenting Until.With/Out.Enough by Itzik Galili, Melt by the company’s Artistic Director Sharon Watson and Bloom by Caroline Finn.

World-famous Dutch/Israeli choreographer Galili has reworked his piece for Phoenix as part of a co-commission with The Royal Ballet. Until.With/Out.Enough, is an emotional journey for the viewer, essentially abstract but layered with intimacy and tension. Watson’s acclaimed aerial dance piece Melt explores the elements of fire and water and the performance culminates with Finn’s quirky piece Bloom which explores the darkly comic sides of life.

Scottish Opera’s new production of Donizetti’s sunny comedy takes to the road this autumn. Director Oliver Platt and designer Oliver Townsend (Rodelinda 2013) take their inspiration from the world of P.G. Wodehouse in a cheeky, vividly characterised show with its tongue firmly in its cheek.

The lively and lyrical score sees Donizetti at his best, from the beauty of Una furtiva lagrima to the fun of Dulcamara’s patter songs. The cast includes Ellie Laugharne, Welsh tenor Elgan Llyr Thomas and acclaimed baritone James Cleverton. They’re accompanied by five players from The Orchestra of Scottish Opera in a new instrumental arrangement by Scottish Opera’s Head of Music, Derek Clark.

Music at Beacon Karen Matheson With special guest Fara Thu 15 September | 7:30pm | £16

Widely recognised as the compelling vocalist of Celtic super-group Capercaillie, Karen Matheson is truly one of Scotland’s most respected singers with an astonishing career spanning more than 30 years.

Her 2016 offering Urram is a musical love letter to her family’s Hebridean roots. It was also declared a “showstopper” by fRoots.

The Don Paterson Situation Thu 20 October | 7:30pm | £10 / £8

One of the UK’s leading poets, Don Paterson, is also a guitarist who has clocked up twelve years jointly leading the jazz-folk ensemble ‘Lammas’.

Don is back playing music at the highest level with Scotland’s most talented jazz musicians: pianist Steve Hamilton, bassist Euan Burton and drummer Alyn Cosker. Between them, they stack up credentials playing, touring and the like with drumming legend Billy Cobham, Tim Garland, Derek Bailey, the SNJO, Tommy Smith, Kris Drever and Bronwynne Brent to name a few.

Tonight’s music incorporates Pat Metheny, Antonio Carlos Jobim, Thelonious Monk, Robert Burns and Breton influences.

In Search of Harperfield, Emma Pollock’s first solo album in six years, retains the sharp, insightful lyricism that characterised her tenure in The Delgados. A festive tale for kids aged 3 – 6 years Always ready for an adventure, Flora has packed her bag and set off for the North Pole to visit Santa. But poor Santa has a problem – his sleigh can’t fly without magical fairy dust, and there’s not a pinch to be found so close to Christmas!

Only Flora can save the day. But she’s not the sort of girl who likes to wear a pretty dress, a sparkly wand, a beautiful tiara, or any of the other things that make a good fairy. Though with the help of her little friends who have come along for the ride, Flora will learn that there’s more to being a fairy than just looking the part.

Scottish Mental Health Arts and Film Festival 2016 Thu 13 – Sun 23 October Opening Event Thu 13 October 4pm

A series of exhibitions make up this year’s Inverclyde contribution to the Festival.

Aiming to raise awareness of the stigma that surrounds mental health and wellbeing, these exhibitions include: •

Hearts, Hands and Minds, produced by Orchard View, Inverclyde’s new Adult and Older Peoples Continuing Care Bed facility in Greenock This is Hour Time, drawings and paintings by the service users from Moving On Inverclyde. Moving On helps support people in recovery Making Time, local artist Anne McKay has been spending time with different groups across the area documenting the many things people get up to!

Returning with another solo exhibition of paintings, local artist, Anne McLean, is fascinated by shipbuilding and rainy days.

Emerge Opening Sat 12 November | 7 – 9pm

Emerge gives young and early career artists from Inverclyde the opportunity to take a risk and develop a new piece of work that pushes their boundaries. Join dancer Tiffany Broadfoot, painter Martyn McKenzie, multimedia artist Calum McMillan and writer Christopher Patrick for an evening of surprise and delight. Visual artwork will be on-show until the evening of Sunday 13th November.

Emerge is a partnership between Inverclyde Place Partnership and the Beacon Arts Centre.
