Letter from the Chair, Board of Directors Dear Spring Celebration Guests, Welcome!

Thank you for sharing this special evening with us in this format.

Tonight marks our first Virtual Spring Celebration, and, as we join from living rooms, couches, dorm rooms, kitchens, and offices all over the country, I hope this event deepens our ties together and our collective commitment to building a more just and equitable world.

Founded in 2004, Beacon’s community has grown over the years to over 250 volunteers, 289 alumni, 20 students in the Class of 2021, and countless champions, partners, family members, and supporters. Tonight, you will hear from some of these individuals, sharing the both broad and personal scope of Beacon Academy’s work.

Tonight we celebrate the impact of this Beacon community. We celebrate the Class of 2021, who will soon be off on their next important step at private high schools. We celebrate our alumni at high schools and colleges across the US, and those in careers spanning from law to the arts to politics to medicine, who have joined us tonight. And we celebrate all of the individuals who have come together to sustain Beacon during this unimaginable year — as the world seemed to halt in the face of the pandemic, Beacon has stayed strong.

Beacon Academy is a 14-month school year program which extends support for our graduates throughout their high school, college, and early career experiences. Tonight, though, we recognize the ways in which we have achieved so much more.

Marsha Feinberg

A dedicated leader with the passion to unite

Marsha Feinberg is a leading social entrepreneur and consultant with more than 35 years of experience. Marsha played major roles in launching many new non-profits by providing strategic planning, fundraising, and community-building expertise. Her first start-up was with the John F. Kennedy Library Foundation where she founded and directed the JFK Library Corps, an after-school service program for students from South Boston, Roxbury, and Dorchester. For two years, Marsha was the Director of Recruitment for Mayor Koch’s City Volunteer Corps, one of the first service corps in the country. After receiving her MBA from Columbia Business School she returned to Boston and worked at City Year during its early years and helped launch the Clinton Democracy Fellows Program in South Africa. Marsha was the Founding Chair of the Board of Directors of Citizen Schools and served seven years in that role, growing the organization from a Bostonbased program to a national network of after-school programs. She also provided coaching and strategic advice to Harvard University’s Advanced Leadership Initiative fellows.

Marsha has served on a number of non-profit boards, including Temple Israel and the Huntington Theatre, and is currently on the New England Advisory Board of Facing History and Ourselves and the Corporation of Belmont Hill School.

When Cindy had the idea for Beacon in 2003, Marsha jumped in to help make it a reality, fueled by the belief that your ZIP code should not determine your future.

Marsha’s expertise as a social entrepreneur and consultant was invaluable in bringing the vision of Beacon to life, as the pair raised seed money, hired staff, and secured in-kind space at Temple Israel.

Over the next 16 years, equally invaluable were Marsha’s care in building strong relationships and stewarding a community, as she grew a wide network of partners and champions; her leadership and mentorship, as she helmed the Development office and secured Beacon’s financial stability; and her kindness, thought, and vision of a more just world, as she worked selflessly every day to build Beacon into the stalwart organization it is today, in the hopes of making a difference.

Tonight we thank Marsha for her inspirational 16 years of service.

A foundational friendship

In 2004, as Cindy Laba and Marsha Feinberg searched for a launching place for Beacon Academy, Temple Israel stepped forth and opened its doors.

For the past 16 years, Temple Israel has been home to Beacon.

Its hallways and classrooms have housed learning and growth, collaboration and communication, challenges and triumphs.

More importantly, Temple Israel leadership and community members have been outstanding friends and partners. From joyful welcomes to endless support to countless events and invitations, Temple Israel has brought Beacon into synagogue life.

Through this partnership, Temple Israel fostered relationships that served as an integral part of the Beacon experience.

The Frances Jacobson Early Childhood Center opened their classrooms to Beacon Buddies for reading groups, and students have attended and spoken at many community events, including this year’s Shabbat Tzedek. While we are thrilled to begin the next year in our new building, we are so incredibly grateful for all that Temple Israel and its leaders and members have done.

We look forward to sustaining these relationships for years to come.

New Home

A new headquarters for educational equity

In September of 2020, Beacon purchased its forever home — a 17,000-square-foot granite church, located in the heart of Roslindale Village.

This building marks a momentous point in Beacon’s history. It offers us the capacity to bring together our current students, alumni, their families, our volunteers, and our entire Beacon network under one roof. It also firmly roots us as a permanent fixture in the community, poised to sustain and grow our lasting impact.

We are so thankful to all who helped make this new home possible, and so eager to start this next chapter in Beacon’s history.

Beacon’s new home was most recently the base for the Boston School of Modern Languages.

What is Beacon Academy?

A 10-Year Journey: Jump Year to Career Beacon works to build educational equity for a cadre of bright and determined students.

Founded in 2004, Beacon is the only school of its kind in the country. Our 10-Year Model begins with our Academy Year — a 14-month term filled with academic rigor, personal development, and exciting life experiences, helping students gain access to and succeed in top independent high schools around the U.S. Students begin Beacon’s “jump” year following the completion of eighth grade — typically as 14-yearolds. Over the following ten years, a team of staff, faculty, and hundreds of dedicated volunteers offer guidance and support throughout our graduates’ high school transitions, college applications, and career beginnings — and everything in between.

At Beacon, we prepare students for futures of curiosity and well-being. We then stay connected, offering the resources to promote success from students’ first days in our classrooms into their first careers.

Students participate in seven to twelve hours of daily instruction and independent study Monday through Friday, plus Saturday morning study hall blocks.

Daily homework of at least three hours is required.

Courses include Math, English, Science, Writing, Facing History and Ourselves, Research and Advocacy, Visual Thinking Strategies, French, and more.

Co-curricular experiences such as visits to the MFA, art-making classes, and sports education (and travel and service learning, when safe to do so) are designed to increase confidence, cultural fluency, and ease in social situations, promoting success and comfort in secondary schools.

The “Second summer” program offers individually-designed opportunities including academic work, jobs, and leadership development.

1-on-1 support from volunteer tutors, teachers, and mentors provides guidance and encouragement.

Provide one-on-one SAT/ACT tutoring and strategy.

Engage alumni with early college essay writing and application completion over the summer.

Coordinate presentations by older graduates on their college experiences in lieu of our multiple annual campus visits (which were cancelled this year due to the pandemic).

Guide and support parents to fully understand, accurately complete, and submit financial aid materials on time.

Help students identify and apply to scholarships to cover inevitable funding gaps.

Work closely with students and families to assess and compare financial aid offers to ensure each student accepts an affordable offer (manageable federal loans and suitable family contributions to avoid any unrealistic burden of debt) for four years of college.

Beacon’s College-to-Career Initiative aims to support our graduates as they navigate the professional world, from drafting their first resume and securing college internships to professional networking opportunities after graduation.

Sarah Smith, Eli Ward, and Nicole Baker lead a team of 30+ volunteers with diverse fields of expertise and industry connections.

Volunteers receive training and guidance on professional development, and work individually with students in college and early careers.

Community partners share job and internship positions with our network of Beacon alumni.

The Summer Internship Program — developed in response to the loss of professional opportunities caused by the pandemic last year — helps graduates secure employment in Boston and on Cape Cod. BeaconConnect, Beacon’s full-service website built last year, serves as the hub for all professional development services, with a complete job and internship board, resume review portal, and more.

Engagement Opportunities

As we look to the year ahead in a new home, we anticipate having the following opportunities for our community members to stay connected, stay engaged, and serve as agents of change: Become a coach (a two-year mentor) to build an enduring relationship with an individual student, tutor students in math and English, help provide and prepare healthy meals, organize care packages for alumni, help students and their families complete college applications and financial aid forms, facilitate corporate sponsorships, donate tickets to athletic or cultural events to enrich our co-curricular program, donate clothing and time to help with Swap It, teach students a new sport, review resumes and practice mock interviews, plan events to welcome new community members, coordinate visits and outreach to support our alumni in high school, greet and direct visitors at our new building...and more!
