Michael Anthony Butler Dorchester
Boston University Academy Michael is a diligent and dependable student who works hard at completing all tasks before him. While his quiet nature was a defining feature for him, his written work demonstrated that still waters run deep. In addition, as the year wore on he gave us all glimpses into his good nature, his sense of humor, and his killer instinct when playing card and board games! BUA has much to look forward to by having Michael for the next four years.
Beacon is a second chance to grow into a better version of yourself. Because of Beacon, I now finally have the chance to go to a better school. Struggling and facing hardships is a part of Beacon, but it’s how you will confront the stress that matters. At the start of Beacon, I didn’t think I could change at all. I had grown accustomed to my world, not realizing there’s another universe in front of me. I was scared to venture into the unknown. After the second and third quarter, when I saw no changes from my grades, I realized that without failures, I would never adapt to the mistakes I will make in the future. Judging from my story, you might think that I’m not scared of getting out of my comfort zone anymore. But in truth, I’m still afraid, and I’m still scared, but that doesn’t mean I won’t try.
Christian Clerge Stoughton
The Dublin School Christian is a deep thinker who looks for more than simple answers. His interests are diverse and his motivation to improve is consistent. The Dublin School is in for a treat because Christian makes every day, every person, and every interaction a great experience.
Beacon has been a year-long commitment, but above all, it’s been a home and a community. Beacon is somewhere kids go to learn but also to make lifelong friendships. At Beacon we don’t focus only on education, but on the future. I have grown a lot this year. I have gone from being nervous to performing in front of a dozen people to creating and presenting a speech in front of hundreds. Not every change has been external. I have also developed healthier habits, and my response to criticism and feedback has improved tremendously. Even still, I know I'm not perfect, and I still have much more to learn. This is not only the end of something great, but also the beginning of a new chapter. The saying, “Work hard, play hard,” has been apparent during this Beacon year. This year was a gift, but just like our motto says, it was also an opportunity earned. 3
Monicke Costa Everett
Choate Rosemary Hall From the beginning, it was clear that Monicke’s passion, individualism, and intellectual curiosity would make her stand out and contribute to her success. She has the strength, the skills, and the ability to thrive at Choate, and it will be exciting to see how she continues to grow and expand her horizons!
Beacon has been my first ever academic challenge. Along with the rigorous course load, it has also been a place where I felt comfortable speaking out about my interests and passions. Having this balance has allowed me to step out of my comfort zone, both academically and personally. Without this one extra year, which has flown by, I do not believe I would be the person I am today. I still have growing to do, but Beacon has certainly pushed me in the right direction. I used to put others in front of my own needs, and through that, I would ignore myself. Looking back, this was all just a front — a way for me to leave my issues behind. My problems were still there. Today, with the help of the Beacon community, I believe that I have learned the art of being selfish for when I need to look after myself.
Royel Drane Bridgewater
Boston University Academy Royel brings his unique perspective to every conversation every day. Royel has had a year of monumental growth. Royel has unearthed his love of learning, curiosity and his athleticism. It has been a pleasure for all to witness. BUA is in for a great year with Royel in their class!!!
The long, challenging, and stressful year at Beacon is a risk with a massive reward. For me, it was a second chance. On March 10, 2020, I was not accepted into any of the schools I wanted to go to, which was disappointing, but not surprising. At that point, my motivation was down the drain and my grades represented that. Beacon gave me a way and a reason to make drastic improvements as a student in almost every way. The goals of getting into private school, making up for a poor start, keeping up with my classmates, and over-preparing for what’s to come in high school kept me going throughout the year. I am happy to say that I have reached and even exceeded all of these goals. Beacon has given me one of the most important gifts of my life and I will use it to its full potential as a way to pay them back. 4
Chiara Dumornay Stoughton
The Dublin School Chiara came to Beacon as a sweet-voiced student who seemed determined to not get in anyone’s way as she diligently worked towards her goals. We are delighted that she is leaving Beacon knowing that she does not belong in the background! Her creativity, her curiosity, her humor, and her empathy are all vital elements of this Beacon community. Dublin School is acquiring a true gem.
This year at Beacon has been different from any other school I’ve gone to, which means that Beacon has changed me more than six other schools ever could have. Coming into Beacon I was quiet and reserved, willing to get through the year without talking to anyone — and I mean that literally. But I quickly realized that wasn’t going to work at Beacon. Here I was able to break out of my shell and get to know people who supported me in ways family members never could have because they were experiencing the same challenges. Beacon has given me confidence, not only to talk, but to speak up and share my opinions.
Anthony Feliciano, Jr. Braintree
Thayer Academy Though Anthony is a quiet presence, he is a powerful one. Steady and determined, Anthony attacked every single challenge he faced this year with fortitude and grace. Though many setbacks have been endured along the way, Anthony’s hard work and his commitment to achieving his goals have paid dividends beyond measure; get ready, Thayer Academy! Anthony Feliciano, Jr., Class of 2025, is on his way!
Beacon means everything and more. Before Beacon helped me get accepted to Thayer Academy, I had applied there for four years straight. Fifth time's the charm in my case. During my time at Beacon, I have learned the definition of true resilience. I have learned that you either attack and grasp the opportunity or run away from it. At first, I wanted to run away. In fact, there was a time I was one bad reading quiz grade away from quitting. The truth is, though, my lack of self-confidence was the real reason I wanted to quit, but my friends helped me gain the confidence that pushed me just enough to complete this unforgettable year. Many obstacles almost got the best of me, but I rose to the occasion, persevered, and I made it. 5
Adrianne Gonzales Princeton, NJ
The Thacher School Adrianne’s curiosity, compassion, and creativity — along with his passion, independence, and drive — are a powerful combination and have enabled him to thrive this year at Beacon. He is eager to use his talents to make the world a better place, and Thacher is lucky to have him!
I have never shared as much of myself with others as I did during my Beacon year. I used to stay in the corner and observe, keeping my thoughts inside. But at Beacon, I started speaking first in classes and during presentations. I even learned to “perform” after reading Romeo and Juliet. Not only could I express feelings while acting, but over time I have become more comfortable putting myself out into the world where people can see, hear, and feel what I want them to see, hear, and feel. I now try to make conversations and ask people questions, not to lengthen dialogues, but because human connections have become part of me. I learned to care less about what others thought of me — or what I think they thought of me — because I know the bigger truth inside me. Beacon has prepared me to follow my passion of making change in this world we live in.
Lya Gonzalez-Soto South Boston
Worcester Academy Despite the various challenges she faced this year, Lya has persevered. Her diligence, commitment to her studies, and desire to achieve as a student have enabled her to grow tremendously. She is ready to excel at Worcester Academy!

Beacon means dedication. Beacon means success. Beacon means curiosity. Beacon means courage. Beacon means capability. Beacon means community. Beacon means family. Beacon has shaped me in numerous ways. Throughout the year I devoted much of my time to school and homework. It was my #1 priority. I never would have thought I was capable enough to get through this challenging year. While I was not able to hang out with friends or watch my favorite Netflix shows, I do not regret my decision. Adapting to a different environment was difficult. As tough as the school year was with the pandemic — even catching Covid myself — I still managed to get through the year with the help of my community, teachers, coach, proctors, and tutors. It was an experience that I will never forget and will hold onto for the rest of my life. I give my Beacon year a 20/21.
Cairon Harrison Dorchester
Deerfield Academy Cairon showed his leadership skills this year while taking care of his intellectual goals. As Cairon starts his next adventure at Deerfield, he will continue to flourish in all disciplines, including classes, sports, and creativity.
When I think of Beacon, I think of a community that will always be there to help me throughout my life. Beacon is much more than a place that has helped me excel academically, but also a place where I was able to learn and grow as a person. Over time, I began to get very close with my classmates, and it was extremely helpful to develop a beyond-surface-level relationship with kids I can relate to because next year I may not have that same opportunity. Over the course of my Beacon year, I have made enormous growth. At the beginning of the school year, whether it be positive or negative, I never took time to self-reflect. However, at Beacon I learned that self-reflection is the most powerful tool to becoming my best self.
Jadyn Kornegay-Murphy East Boston
Berkshire School Outspoken and confident, Jadyn’s strength of character and love of learning set her apart from most young women her age. Once Jadyn sets her sights on achieving something, she rarely relents until the goal has been reached. The Berkshire School will not only be gaining an amazing student, they will also gain a trailblazing young woman, unafraid to push boundaries and challenge the status quo.
When I think of Beacon I think of hard work and discovery. I have never been this academically challenged in my life. Beacon pushed me to the potential I knew I could achieve when given the opportunity. Beacon helped me grow. Beacon taught me how to be productive. I became close with people I wouldn’t have ever thought I’d interact with. I learned to listen and communicate. I spent a great deal of time with my classmates, but also with myself. I learned to have hard conversations with others. I explored my interests and dislikes. I dove into my love for literature and skiing. I learned it was okay to be sensitive and vulnerable. I also learned to love my mistakes because there is no living without trial and error. 7
Sahra Maalim Roxbury
St. Mark's School Feisty, fierce, and full of fun, Sahra has been a spirited addition to this year’s class. Her energy and enthusiasm have enlivened the community, and her commitment to her studies has engendered tremendous growth. She is well-poised for success at St. Mark’s and beyond!
My name is Sahra Maalim, I am a 15-year-old African-American from the South End. My favorite part of this year was meeting my classmates and the faculty. From the very first day of the summer session I was super excited and pumped to start my Beacon journey. Beacon challenged me physically by running the 5K in the fall and then zip-lining and climbing high to complete difficult obstacles at Tree Top Adventures. Beacon also challenged me mentally with studying and homework. Each of these struggles helped me grow. I will use the skills I learned at Beacon to be a great student and a great friend to the people in my next community. One thing I’m going to miss about this community is how loving everyone is. Whenever someone was down, we gave each other a hand to help them back up. I will forever be grateful for this community and for this opportunity.
Emilio Martinez Revere
Buxton School Emilio arrived at Beacon a kindhearted, eager boy. Emilio emerges from Beacon Academy an empathetic and caring young man. Emilio has grown tremendously this year as he was always working to be the best version of himself. Buxton is lucky to have such a self-reflective, supportive team player in their midst.
Beacon is just one year — 0ne year to work as diligently as you can, and one year to change. It’s dumbfounding how Beacon was able to change me in one year. I used to see school as grades, academics, and smarts only. If one is not intelligent enough, then they can’t go to school. I couldn’t have been more wrong. Beacon showed me that it’s not only about grades but about persevering and creating friendships; it’s about struggling and making mistakes; and it’s about climbing back up, not to where you were, but even higher by learning from those mistakes and doing your best to finish with power. 8
Shandys Matos Roxbury
The White Mountain School Shandys has been quietly steadfast in her determination to succeed at Beacon Academy. She has a calm maturity that has been instrumental in moving her forward each day. Shandys’ deep inner strength will move mountains. White Mountain School, look out!!
Going through a Beacon year was the most rewarding and hardest thing I have ever done in my life, but in the end, I know it will guide me through everything. No matter how old I am, I will always remember my Beacon year and my Beacon class. The littlest things are what matter the most here, even if it's just going for a run or studying vocabulary. Getting through this year required a lot of sweat and tears. Thinking back I can definitely say that Beacon made me realize that my life should not be based on what's around me, but instead it should be based on what kind of person I am. My dreams and accomplishments are what mean the most to me, and with help and guidance from Beacon I know that I am ready to overcome my next big challenge, whatever that may be.
Phiona Nabagereka Woburn
Noble and Greenough School Wildly mature and gleefully responsible, Phiona has been an exceptional student and a generous community member. She developed a stronger voice and a greater awareness of her talents this year. Her kindness, delightful sense of humor, and reverence for learning will make her an outstanding member of the Noble and Greenough School.
Beacon was a chance for me to branch out of my comfort zone and discover who I am. I tried new activities and discovered new interests, such as painting and golf. The community is a safe, grounding place to grow and learn valuable lessons, like the importance of communication and vulnerability. Beacon also made me realize traits and interests that I never knew I had. Through the homework, I learned I am persistent and a leader. The academics challenged me, but also made me an inquisitive person. At first, I was shy and quiet, but with my friendships, I became more mature, vulnerable, and open-minded. Beacon has been an amazing experience that changed who I am. 9
Aolani Nuñez Medford
Boston University Academy Lani has been a pillar of leadership for her class this year. She has led by example as she arrives at Beacon with humility, strength, and the determination needed to be at her best every day. BUA will only be a better place with the benefit of Lani’s team-focused mentality, work ethic, and joyful personality.
Beacon is the opportunity to grow. Beacon pushed me academically and socially, challenging me beyond my limits. I was introduced to new experiences like skiing and even eating crickets! The year was hard at first because I had closed myself up, and I was scared to have new experiences. One other problem was not speaking up in class because I was afraid of making mistakes and felt my answers were not sufficient. I had to work on believing in myself and being more confident in my work. My friends supported me throughout these struggles. The Beacon community has taught me to have fun, and that no matter what I have to say, my answers will always be valid. Challenges and mistakes throughout the year led me to learn and grow. I am grateful to call myself a Beacon alum.
Kiara Panarello Mattapan
St. George's School From the beginning, Kiara has been the glue that holds her class together. Hard-working, self-reflective, and determined, Kiara put her foot on the accelerator in July and has been unrelenting since. While the St. George’s School is lucky to have Kiara on campus for the next four years, the Beacon community will miss her excitement and enthusiasm for learning, her kind and loving presence, and her steadfast commitment to excellence.
Beacon is an opportunity to find yourself. In my case, I didn’t know who I was before coming here. I still don’t know who I am to be honest, but I have an idea of the person I want to become. Like my hair, I have grown a tremendous amount as a student and a person — from the way I talk, to how I express myself, to how I choose my relationships. Even my style has improved. Beacon has taught me how to truly think before I act and to trust myself as well as others. Beacon means: adventure, ambition, dedication, honesty, imagination, kindness, respect, and sometimes tediousness, but most importantly family! 10
Elaine Peña Roxbury
Miss Hall's School With her artistic, musical, and theatrical talents, Elaine is already a one-woman show. She has brought excitement, wonder, and witty banter to every aspect of Beacon. Her greatest gift may be her curiosity about the world, which propels her to continue learning. She will undoubtedly enliven the Miss Hall’s community with her creativity and singular style.
I see Beacon as a metaphor. It is a beacon that shines a light to guide people to a better future. Going toward a beacon can be harsh. All-nighters need to be pulled and crashes need to be sustained. Every once in a while, there might be a nice day — birds chirping and time to go outside for something that is not labor. But Beacon taught me how to work. Before Beacon I was convinced that school was going to be easy, and I could just swim through. I was wrong. At Beacon, I’ve grown more mentally than physically. I learned how to be resilient and how to work for myself.
Nina Rosa Chelsea
Noble and Greenough School Nina is a kind and welcoming student, recognized by peers as someone who genuinely cares for others. With her Renaissance spirit, she applies herself in all academic and artistic endeavors. Nina is a talented creative writer, with a keen eye for detail and a knack for developing strong characters. We look forward to how she will write herself into the Nobles community. They are so lucky to have her.
To me, Beacon Academy is an opportunity to grow and learn in a loving community that wants the best for you. In Beacon, one does not only grow academically, but socially and mentally, too. Beacon offers the privileges that one deserves but has had withheld from them. At the beginning of the year, I was struggling mentally. I tried to hide my struggles but failed miserably. Once I shared my true feelings, the Beacon students and teachers were, and still are, supportive of me. On that day, I became fully aware of the blessing that Beacon is. This year I have learned that it is okay to not be okay. I have been supplied with a variety of lessons that I will use for the rest of my life. 11
Larry Simpkins-Dixon Roxbury
Lawrence Academy Larry always showed how much concern he had for his classmates, and he was able to lead with his actions and his thoughtfulness. During this past year, Larry learned that he has the ability to excel in a variety of academic areas. Lawrence Academy is receiving a strong-minded, fierce competitor who will motivate others through his voice and his example.
To me Beacon is Brave, Encouraging, Ambitious, Caring, Outgoing, and Never giving up. Beacon has taught me to not miss out on opportunities because I will regret it later. Beacon means opportunities. If I had chosen a different route, I could see myself as another black man in the system. But by being at Beacon, both my mentality and the way I approach situations are better. I had to learn and take constructive criticism, which has made me mentally and physically stronger. Beacon shaped me into a young adult. Beacon showed me what it means to sacrifice. The sacrifices I made were taking this extra year of school for a better future. All in all I learned how to become my own person and how to be accountable for my mistakes.
Jared Vilcina Brown Cambridge
St. Mark's School Jared’s seriousness of purpose and overwhelming desire to constantly improve have made him a force to be reckoned with this year. Though Jared’s journey to success has not been easy at times, he is leaving Beacon strong, ready to tackle every challenge in the years to come. The St. Mark’s School community will certainly be enhanced by Jared's presence for the next four years!
I came to Beacon because I felt horribly underprepared to go to high school. I wanted to be around people who wanted to be challenged as much as I did. I wanted to go higher than public school. I wanted to see how far my mind could take me, and how many opportunities I could find along the way. My determination and focus have been honed to near perfection. My motivation now never wavers. Beacon has changed me so drastically I can’t imagine seeing myself in the past. Beacon is more than just a gap academic year to me. It's a year of true change and memory-making along the way.
