The Class of 2018 Beacon Academy Diploma Quotation "Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small doesn't serve the world. There's nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It's not just in some of us; it's in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others." Brian Barrera Framingham

Brimmer and May School "Brian brings energy and joy into every room he enters. He has made great personal and academic strides at Beacon, and his enthusiasm, tenacity, and drive will enable him to find great success at Brimmer and May next year."

Beacon has guided me and shown me new options and opportunities. I now can shout that I will be attending a prestigious high school, Brimmer and May. This would never have been possible without Beacon. In July of 2017, I had the opportunity to travel abroad for an elite soccer clinic in England, but going to Beacon would mean turning that offer down; it was one of the most stressful and indecisive months of my life. Since the age of five, I had always wanted to become a professional soccer player. Before Beacon, I did not believe in education, and my mind was fixated on soccer. As my ticking time bomb was almost at zero, I decided to attend Beacon because I considered the consequences of something like an injury for my soccer career. It finally dawned on me that soccer was only temporary and education lasts a lifetime. I have never regretted my decision. Throughout this year, Beacon has expanded my view of life beyond just soccer. If I never had Beacon, I would probably still be in my little bubble, waiting for it to be popped!

Gabrielle Buissereth Canton

Lexington Christian Academy "Navigating through complex challenges beyond her years, Gabby has grown both personally and academically. Her strength, confidence, and perseverance will help her accomplish any goal she sets her mind to."

Beacon means a truthful and life-long journey. Beacon will not simply end on June 3rd, 2018. For all of us, Beacon will last a lifetime. I made a new family this year that will expand even more as years pass. I will never forget the opportunities that I had while attending Beacon. One of the elements of Beacon that I love most is how candid everyone is. You may never see another high school community that will cry and laugh with you at the same time. At Beacon, we have the chance to be our true, authentic selves in front of everyone. In many ways, I have learned how to become an adult at fifteen years old, and I now view myself as strong academically, physically, and mentally.

Yeabsira Gugssa Chelsea

Groton School "Yeabsira animated the Beacon community with her gleeful spirit, lilting voice, feisty competitive streak, and her saintly concern for others. With her intellect, kindness, and acute sense of morality, she is bound to make the world a far better place."

Beacon began as a fear that I wanted to run from. I was so afraid of failing that I couldn’t see the amazing possibilities that would result from Beacon. I ran away initially, but Beacon, like the truth, caught up with me. Thinking about it now, I can’t imagine my life without Beacon. Beacon is not just a school; it has become my family. I have met the most amazing teachers, students, and people because of Beacon. I was afraid to come to Beacon because I worried I wasn’t worthy of attending a private school, but Beacon inspired me to work my hardest and believe in myself. Sometimes I compare myself to Charlie from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory because, like him, I have been handed the golden ticket. Thank you is not a strong enough expression to say to Beacon for all it has done for me this year.

Nicole Heredia Dorchester

Buckingham Browne & Nichols School "Bright, quirky, and exuberant, Nicole keeps the Class of 2018 on their toes with her quick wit and sense of humor. Her moments of uninhibited joy are contagious and never fail to brighten someone's day, making Nicole a delightful member of the Beacon community."

Every time I think of Beacon, what comes to my mind immediately is the word opportunity. Beacon has made me have great appreciation for my education. There aren’t any words to describe my feelings other than gratitude, appreciation, and love because in this awesome place I have met people I love and can depend on. Beacon has allowed us to interact with wise, educated people and pushed us to approach people of all ages. I have become someone who no longer fears talking to adults or other kids my age. I have learned that adults are not intimidating but interesting. They are wise and have something special about them that makes them who they are. I am incredibly grateful to be able to talk to them more freely and learn from them. I love how Beacon has allowed me to connect with everyone and learn so many lessons to prepare me for the future.

Salah Maalim South Boston

Dublin School "Salah now sees and engages with the world completely differently than how he did a year ago. He has become a dedicated student and an intellectual leader. With his combination of compassion and his sense of fairness, Salah has all the makings of a future class president."

Believe it or not, when I first walked into Beacon Academy, I did not know the definition of “beacon,” so, like any other person who wants to know the definition of a word, I searched it up. I found many definitions, but one, in particular, seemed most fitting: a light or other visible object serving as a signal, warning, or guide, especially at sea. Beacon Academy is a light—a light that guides you from the darkest parts of the sea to “the land.” It guides you to a land where people are dancing and living lavishly. Some people are born on that land, some people have to take a boat with a light to arrive on the land, and some people never make it to the land. Beacon is that illumination that helped me see the land. Beacon taught me the essence of hard work. I went from playing basketball every day of my life to studying vocabulary every free moment of my life. This year has changed my life completely, and it would not have been possible without Beacon.

Laylanie Matos Dorchester

Waldorf High School of Massachusetts Bay "Laylanie faces every challenge with humility, determination, and a smile. Her kindness and amiable nature have made Laylanie a beloved member of the Class of 2018, and she is sure to thrive at the Waldorf School of Massachusetts Bay next year."

Beacon has changed my life completely! It’s crazy how it’s been a year already, and I’m graduating from this amazing, one-of-a-kind school. A year ago, if someone had told me that I would be attending an independent high school with full aid, I would have thought they were playing some kind of joke on me. Beacon is where I showed all my emotions and experienced ups and downs with my friends and teachers during a grueling year. At my previous school, I never truly had a group of friends who would support me through difficult times. That all changed when I came to Beacon. I met the most amazing 17 people who would have a major impact on my life every day. Beacon is really a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, and I am glad I made it count.

Albert McField Mattapan

Belmont Hill School "With one goal in mind when he entered Beacon, Albert pushed himself through every challenge, determined to become the student he needed to be to attain that goal. With his honesty, charisma, style, and a laugh that echoed through the Beacon hallways, Albert will blaze his own trail at his new school."

As the year has unfolded, I have become a lot more humble and thankful for all that the teachers and my peers have done for me. At my previous school, I had this mentality where I thought I always had to be the best at everything and brag about my accomplishments. It took a long time for me to realize that at Beacon I was in a community where students and teachers wanted everyone to succeed. When I saw this, I realized that there was no longer a reason to act cocky. With this reflection, I have come to understand that everyone has individual strengths and weaknesses, and I no longer view every aspect of life as a competition. I am so thankful that my teachers and peers helped me change academically but also as a person.

Neil Mendez Revere

Berwick Academy "Like a Polaroid developing before our eyes, Neil emerged as a consummate student, an eager conversationalist, and a cornerstone of the Beacon community. He enthusiastically soaked up every ounce of instruction at Beacon and will be a star in high school."

During the Beacon summer session, I was a quiet kid. I didn’t socialize with the other kids, and I sat alone with the only other person I knew during lunch. Every day I would notice the other kids enjoying their time talking to each other, but I did nothing to change because I was too shy. I had always gone through school this way, but Beacon was different. They didn’t let the quiet kids slide. I left my comfort zone and became the most social person I have ever been. I have met many great people and formed a family that I love. This year I also became so academically engaged that I fix my peers’ grammar all the time and enjoy it. Beacon has changed me in so many ways. I cannot explain them all, but I would like to thank them for everything they have done for me.

Destiny Montero Hyde Park

Northfield Mount Hermon School "Smart, inquisitive, and kind, Destiny has been a quiet but critical member of this year’s class. She has helped to set a high bar for academic achievement, and we love her for her intellectual curiosity, generosity towards others, and endearingly quirky nature."

Beacon has been a life-changing experience. It is mind-boggling how in just these 14 months I have changed. I have become more social, and I advocate for myself more. I have also been able to get into an amazing independent school that I believe is the best possible school for me. When I first began Beacon, it was hard, and I thought that I wasn’t going to be able to make it through, but this year has been incredible, and I have made some amazing friends because of it. Last year, I did not know where I would go for high school, and I did not want to attend a school that would be too easy. Beacon definitely wasn’t easy, and it has taught me to be my own person and to take every opportunity that I can to propel myself and grow along the way.

Tara Nguyen Dorchester

Walnut Hill School for the Arts "Creative and quirky, Tara has brought a unique perspective to her class. She has embraced new experiences with gusto and will infuse her high school community with her passion and spirit."

I’ve grown in so many ways this year. Beacon has broken down the walls I had built around myself for years; they truly don’t give up on you unless you’ve given up on yourself. That is why you have to keep trying, pushing yourself until it feels physically impossible to keep going—not in just academics, but emotionally and mentally as well. Before Beacon, I had always kept to myself, isolated from others. Now, I know I can express how I’m feeling at any given time to anyone. I was a budding flower, but not quite ready to bloom. Beacon has nurtured me with each passing day, week, and month. They’ve watered me and have given me sunlight; now, I feel ready to blossom.

Hadear Rizq East Boston

Miss Hall's School "Like a daffodil that blooms in the spring, Hadear has blossomed into a mature, funny, and thoughtful young woman. She has found her voice and learned to use it. She is well-poised for success in high school next year."

My first day of school was July 5th. I was a nervous wreck, sitting in the back of class, trying to avoid being confronted by my new teachers. That was the worst choice I could have made. I learned that sitting in the back during class made me seem as if I didn’t care or didn’t want to be there. I, however, have grown at Beacon and learned that appearance is important. People often expect us, as people of color, to make the stereotypes true, but at Beacon we have been taught to prove those stereotypes wrong. I changed not only that way, but I have also started to leave my hermit shell. I now understand the importance of speaking to others and making connections. I used to be shy and scared of everyone, but I have opened my eyes and now see the beauty of conversing with others.

Liliano Rosa Dorchester

Berwick Academy "From the simplest of beginnings, Liliano has embraced every opportunity to try new things, meet new people, and become a class leader. Driven by his vision for the future, Liliano is determined to be successful. He is Beacon through and through."

Beacon pulled me out of the ordinary life that I had been living for fourteen years and opened doors to this new life where I was able to perfect myself in all areas as a young man. I was able to perfect my manners, to learn what it truly means to be a student-athlete, to put myself in someone else’s shoes, and to believe in myself because I am capable of more than what was already planned for me. Beacon has been more than just a school to me; it has become a new lifestyle. Now that I have the tools that Beacon has provided, I am ready for a prosperous life.

Valerie Rosario Lawrence

St. Paul's School "Valerie's quick wit, engaging personality, and ability to manage challenging situations with finesse set her apart from the rest. Her willingness to lead by example in quiet, subtle ways will serve her well next year and has allowed her to leave her mark on Beacon."

Beacon Academy, to me, is like hiking up the never-ending mountain of life. Before Beacon, I had only taken a few steps, and then I reached a wall, and I thought that was the end for me. Beacon heroically demolished this wall, which had prevented me from seeing that there was a life-changing path ahead. Every day at Beacon is a step up that path. Every day, as I get one step closer to the peak of the mountain, the air gets thinner--Beacon gets much more challenging. But as the air thins, I have a better view of the world. Although it can be back-breaking, I love it. Beacon gives us the opportunity to work hard, and to strive for this better view. Nothing has ever felt as good. This vista is our future; it is our array of opportunities; it is a view that, as a Latina from one of the worst school systems in Massachusetts, I thought would never be available to me. Every time that I get a hundred on a quiz, I go up one step and I see St. Paul’s and one day law school. I never knew that a place as transformative as Beacon existed, but now I cannot imagine my life without Beacon.

Ibrahim Sidow Chelsea

Putney School "The first thing you notice about Ibrahim is his infectious smile. Shortly after, you uncover the depth of personality, intelligence, and humility that make Ibrahim truly Beacon."

Beacon has changed my understanding of the world. Beacon has made me take notice of what is happening in the world. My first time protesting for a just cause happened at Beacon during March for Our Lives. This year, I also had the chance to speak with diverse groups of adults and learn from them. Beacon has taught me how to get out of my comfort zone, use it to my advantage, and better myself. Beacon has expanded my worldview and shown me how to overcome any barriers placed in my way.

Zoe Umeh Randolph

Noble and Greenough School "Like that moment in a musical when everyone bursts into song, Zoe brought us joy with her exuberance, optimism, and authenticity. Thanks to her ambition, intelligence, and fierce work ethic, Zoe turned one of her dreams into a reality this year, and we know she will shine at Nobles."

Beacon is a place where you are cleansed of doubt, and your life becomes something new and previously inconceivable. Beacon allows us to dream beyond the boundaries of society—beyond the stereotypes designated towards us. At Beacon, we laugh and learn and face our history. Everyone is equal here. We come to terms with our problems, so that nothing can demoralize our souls. Beacon has introduced me to wonderful people who I am more than elated to call my family. Surrounded by caring friends and teachers, my confidence has erupted and my soul is intact. Together, we have escaped the dark clouds haunting our paths, and we await a bright future, knowing Beacon has taught us to beat down and conquer challenges.

Genesis Valdez Dorchester

Concord Academy "Genesis began the year as a quiet, unassuming achiever and emerges from Beacon a confident, articulate leader who maintains her humility and empathy. Genesis's experience at Beacon has continued to nurture her love of learning and broaden her curiosity for worldly adventures. She is a delight to be around!"

I came to Beacon not knowing how to hold a conversation or look someone in the eye for more than three seconds. I learned how to give a proper handshake and greet people the right way at Beacon. In the beginning, I didn’t understand the real value or purpose of it. I just went along and did what I was told. But as we went on field trips and encountered more people, I realized why Beacon was teaching me all of this. To open myself up. I didn’t want to tell anyone what I was thinking or feeling; sometimes it would be difficult for me. Now, I don’t even hesitate. At first, I thought I wasn’t going to make it through Beacon. I kept thinking about my limits and felt discouraged. I had set those limits for myself, and I didn’t realize that until I saw the successful outcome of all the work I was dedicating to school. All those sleepless nights and stressful mornings were worth it. At Beacon, I learned not to believe in limits; you can only keep going.

Jennifer Vega Salem

The Winsor School "Jenni is a veritable breath of fresh air whose transformation this school year has been nothing short of amazing. Her resilience, intellectual curiosity, and genuine love of learning are unparalleled. Jenni's ability to succeed in high school and beyond is limitless."

Beacon means family to me on many different levels. When I came to Beacon, I didn’t have anyone: no family, no friends, and no support. But I found all of these at Beacon. Without Beacon, who knows where I would be, physically and mentally. With the support I have received at Beacon, I have learned to deal with what has happened to me and to use it as inspiration to accomplish great things in life instead of letting my past bring me down. At Beacon, I have found friends who also aspire for a better life and better opportunities. These friends have supported me in moments when I thought my past and the emotions I felt were stronger than I am. I can only thank these friends for not giving up on me. The family I have formed, and continue to form, at Beacon believes in me in a way I never thought possible. I have been able to grow more than I ever thought possible. I will now be able to change the way life goes for my family and for the generations to come.

Anthony Wright Hyde Park

Groton School "Anthony's powerful yet consistent journey to the finish line is remarkable. Though there were obstacles thrown in his way, his ability to persist in the face of adversity in a humble, genuine way makes Anthony the personification of Beacon."

Beacon is so much more than just a 14 month program to give motivated students an opportunity to attend an independent school. To me, Beacon was a giant puzzle that challenged me intellectually, morally, physically, and mentally. When I first came to Beacon, I began with a few pieces to this puzzle. Little did I know, I had a lot more work to do. The intellectual and physical parts were the two pieces I knew from the start I had to improve upon, and I enjoyed progressing beyond those two obstacles. But, the moral and mental parts were the ones that blindsided me and challenged me the most. Throughout these 14 months, I learned what it means to have integrity and mental toughness. Beacon is not just a school to hone your academic skills; it is a community whose main priority is to shape each student into the most moral and genuine person possible.
