Newly engaged couples may experience an array of emotions when they sit down to plan their weddings. Some couples can’t wait to jump into the planning process, while others may proceed with caution because they don’t know what to expect – particularly in regard to cost.

Over the years, weddings have become a major financial commitment, in many instances ensuring a couple’s first task as man and wife will be paying off the mountain of bills they accrue with their dream wedding.

Next to buying a home and having a child, weddings are one of the largest expenses a couple will incur. According to Wedding Wire’s 2018 report, the average wedding has 127 guests at a cost of $27,000 for the ceremony and reception.

Add in the average engagement ring ($5,000) and the average cost for a honeymoon ($4,000) and the price tag climbs to $36,000. It reports that about 40 percent of all couples surveyed underestimated the cost of their nuptials.

The Knot notes that 74 percent of couples go into debt to help pay for their wedding and that while 89 percent of brides and grooms create a budget, only 48 percent of them have a detailed list that breaks down costs.

About half of all couples initially plan on spending less than $20,000, with 23 percent of those estimating they can spend less than $10,000, according to The Knot survey. But it’s easy to underestimate – for most people, wedding planning is a new experience and there’s no way to truly understand the cost involved until the planning begins.

While it’s important to be aware of the costs, it’s equally as important to quickly discount your dream wedding. That fabulous wedding is still within reach. You may just have to make some difficult decisions to bring it to fruition. What is most important to you on your big day? And where can corners be cut to trim muchneeded dollars off the final bill. Is a formal rehearsal dinner a must?

Or can your bridesmaids pitch in and pull together a great homecooked spaghetti dinner that everyone will appreciate? If having your dream wedding includes a high dollar venue, money can be saved in other areas to bring your dream to life.

Be ever watchful of the small things. Large expenditures, like paying a flat $2,000 for a location, are easy to track. It’s often in the smaller costs that couples lose track of. Sure, linen tablecloths may only be $5 a piece to rent for the day, but if you’re renting 100 for two days, the cost can rise quickly without anyone realizing where the money is going. The same can be said for accessories, gifts, spa services, gratuities and more. Keep an ever watchful eye on the budget to avoid letting these things spin out of control.

Here are a few other tips for keeping the budget in check: Limit the guest list. Inviting all friends and family members might be a nice gesture, but it’s also an expensive one. Cost-conscious couples can save a good deal of money by only inviting those friends and family members who are closest to them. Sit down as a couple and write out a list of people that you would both like to invite. Ask your parents to do the same – it’s only fair since parents generally have a financial stake in the wedding as well. Take into consideration who will bring a date or children with them.

Switch from Saturday. Saturday weddings are not only the most

popular, but also the most expensive, according to reports. Couples with some flexibility can save money by moving their wedding to a Friday or Sunday. Couples in a tourist-driven economy like Eastern North Carolina can also stand to shave a little bit off the top by having their wedding during off-peak months. November through April are slower months for weddings, so many venues, caterers and other service providers offer lower rates.

Trim back the flowers. Flowers for a wedding can prove very expensive, but couples can trim those costs by using more greenery in the floral displays and ordering less expensive, seasonal flowers.

When discussing arrangements with the florist, explain your budget limitations clearly to make sure they are understood. Couples may also look at candles, shells and other decorative items that can help fill the space left by absent centerpieces. For those who are really creative – loose flowers in a tall slender vase can go a long way.

Avoid a full meal service. Many couples feel they overspent more on food, drink and cake than any other aspect of their wedding.

Save serious money by planning the reception for a time when guests will not need a full, seated meal. If your ceremony is between 1-3 in the afternoon, you can have a tea reception.

Serve finger sandwiches, scones and mini pastries. For a reception starting at 4 or 5pm, have a cocktail reception. Drinks and hors d’oeuvres are all you need.

Make it clear on your invitation – “Cocktail reception to follow.”

Couples may also choose to limit beverage availability by having one or two drink options instead of a full bar. For those looking to have a much smaller bar tab at the end of the night – limiting the cash bar for guests is no longer the big etiquette no-no it once was.

Opt for a DJ. Bands are wonderful for dancing the night away, but they are often limited in the scope of music they play. Having a DJ is both less expensive and more versatile.

Day of support is both helpful and necessary. If you’re deciding to trim the budget by doing all the planning yourself, please consider having a wedding planner on hand for the day of the event.

Look at a variety of venues. If you know anyone with a beautiful home or a large garden, consider the option of having your event there. Private venues may require hiring staff, paying for insurance and a variety of other incendiary costs that leave you wondering if maybe you should have just hit up the justice of the peace in his chambers. During those off-season weddings, don’t be ashamed to bargain a little bit. Venues that are booked every weekend all summer long are often sitting vacant come November – making it a great opportunity to get a little discount. Don’t overlook all-inclusive venues, such as resorts and hotels, which can hold the wedding and reception all in one place and make the event much easier for out-of-towners to navigate.

Forgo a traditional honeymoon. While it’s certainly nice to fly off to the Caribbean and spend your first week as a married couple soaking up some sun, a more local getaway for a couple of days can be just as relaxing and save couples substantial amounts of money. Once the bills have been paid, couples can then enjoy a more traditional honeymoon, possibly in celebration on their first anniversary. www.nccoast.com

Please Take a Seat Receptions may be big or small, lavish or casual. But regardless of their size or style, receptions all share a common element: they require that couples establish at least a basic seating arrangement for guests. Even though assigned seating isn’t mandatory, selecting seats for a sitdown dinner makes things simpler and reduces confusion.

Some reception venues may even require assigned seating so that catering staff can service tables accordingly.

Seating guests can be tricky, but employing a few strategies can make the process go quickly and smoothly.

A seating chart, whether it’s venue-specific or one couples make themselves, is essential. If you are using a self-made chart, chat with the venue about the shape of tables, how many guests each table can seat and the location of tables around the space.

When making the chart, start with the wedding party and move out from there. Couples can ease themselves into the task of seating by doing the easy tables first. The primary one 16

is the wedding party table. This traditionally can be a dais or a sweetheart table flanked by the wedding party. According to Martha Stewart Weddings, the table should be centrally located and the wedding couple should sit in the middle.

A male-female pattern follows on either side of the couple, consisting of the ushers, bridesmaids, best man and maid of honor. If much of the wedding party is already married, couples may opt to have the wedding party sit with their spouses instead of at the dais.

Tables for parents, grandparents and immediate family members of the bride and groom also are high priority.

Both families can be combined at one table, or they can be separated into two tables. These tables should be the closest to the bride and groom.

Be sure to consider mobility issues. Elderly guests may want to be away from the band, deejay or speakers. Guests in wheelchairs may need an accessible seat near the exit.

Likewise, place guests who tend to be the life of the party close to the dance floor to encourage others to join in.

When all else fails – get some help. Enlist the help of parents to seat their friends and extended family members.

Parents will generally know best who gets along and who should be separated.

There are a variety of apps available for the task and mock ups of seating charts are readily available online. Once set, be sure to create place cards or a central seating chart so guests can easily find their seat.

While rustic has become a household word when it comes to decorating, the theme has also become a hot commodity in the wedding industry. From burlap draped tables to Pinterest-inspired centerpieces, the DIY trend has become a popular look with special events of all types.

It’s exactly what Katrina Naylor was looking for when she began planning her nuptials. She was living in Wilmington at the time and was disappointed at the lack of venues that met her needs in Carteret County. Her parents, who own J&S Landscape and Design and J&S Nursery, had some excess property and the bride-to-be soon began thinking this might be the perfect place to say “I do.”

“I looked into tent prices and as soon as we saw them my dad said he could build something for that price,” said Katrina. That’s exactly what he did. And in the process, he developed a new arm of the family business that his daughter would embrace and grow.

That first structure was temporary – but within seven months of her own wedding date, Katrina had permits in hand and a permanent structure modeled after the beautiful scenes that had caught her attention while vacationing in Vermont. Butterfly Kisses Pavilion was born.

With ample parking and outdoor wedding space as well as the barn-like Pavilion, the rustic space can be dressed up or down to suit just about any taste. Katrina notes that there are tables and chairs on-site and the site has relationships with a variety of vendors to help streamline the planning process.

Jerome and Jessica Bacon found the venue while searching for locations near Emerald Isle that were not located on the beach.

Jessica, who had a wedding outside on the grounds, said she was interested in having a more relaxed garden vibe for the décor but wanted to make sure there was also a structure in case weather put a wrench in their plans.

“My favorite thing about the venue was the Pavilion itself,” she said. “The pavers inside are designed so well and make it feel more

elegant than just a barn. I love how the Pavilion protects you from the elements but also still allows you and your guests to feel as if you’re outside with its large windows that can be opened or closed depending on the weather. “ While the primary focus is on weddings, Katrina said the site hosts a variety of events through the year, including an annual dance for the West Carteret High School Band. In 2018, it hosted its first Marine Corps Ball, something she was exceptionally honored to do. In all, they see about 35-55 events annually, with numbers continuing to increase.

“Every year we do improvements to the property,” she said. “For example, this year we added more Southern trees. Every year we try to focus on something different so we continue to improve the venue.”

In addition, she is always striving to come up with new ideas and ways of bringing the wedding community together. In January 2019, Butterfly Kisses will be holding its first Southern Stroll venue tour.

Couples will be chauffeured between two venues and the Pavilion, where an after-party will be held.

Now a certified wedding planner, Katrina, who had previously worked at BB&T said she had no idea she would make such a drastic career change, but she’s certainly glad she did. As part of the family business she brought her first child to work with her every day … now she brings two.

In the coming year, the venue plans to introduce all-inclusive small wedding packages for limited parties beginning at around $1,600 per couple for a party of 20.

“Our goal is always to make the venue as accessible to everyone as possible, even those who are on a tight budget or just want a smaller wedding with close friends and family,” said Katrina.

Q. How early did you start planning? We started planning our wedding right after we got engaged – July 29. We got engaged in July and were married on Nov. 10. In just three short months we were able to bring together a beautiful outdoor wedding. I wouldn’t have it any other way!

Q. What factors did you take into consideration when choosing a venue? We both knew we wanted an outside wedding and a rustic setting to go with our fall theme. We wanted something simple – yet elegantWe were also eager to have out reception at the same location as our ceremony so guests didn’t have to travel to a separate venue. After our first visit to Beaufort Proper we knew that it was the place. It was exactly what we had imagined.

Q. How did you add little touches of yourselves into your big day? One of the things that we wanted to do was recognize family members who have passed and wouldn’t be able to share our special day. So we placed pictures of them in a special spot so they could be a part of the wedding. We also had all of the groomsmen wear matching Carolina Panthers socks to recognize Matthew’s obsession with his favorite football team. It was fun because many of them like other teams. We also had a unity ceremony with sand – we poured orange and brown sand together, representing how two can become one and never be parted.

Q. What were the biggest challenges in planning your wedding? Our biggest challenge was the weather. I have always wanted an outdoor wedding and I was determined that the weather would not interfere. I checked the weather every day the week before and Lisa at Beaufort Proper had a plan B just in case, which was so helpful. The weather turned out to be beautiful and the temperature was perfect for our fall wedding.

Q. Are there things that you wish you knew ahead of time and didn’t? How fast the ceremony goes by! I was so nervous about the ceremony but it was literally over in the blink of an eye. I also wish that I had remembered to grab my bouquet before walking out and after being presented as husband and wife. I was so excited that I left my bouquet behind with the maid of honor.

Q. What advice would you give to brides and grooms in the process of planning their special day? Our wedding had glitches – as I’m sure all weddings do. But I wouldn’t change a single thing. No matter how hard you try to make it ‘perfect’ something is bound to happen. Odds are though, that nobody will notice. Anyone who has been recently been married will tell you it goes by in a flash. Think back to prom, graduation, your 21st birthday – a great deal of time is spent on the lead up and planning, but the event itself is here and gone before you know it. Weddings are certainly no different.

Quickly gone are the memories of seeing family members you haven’t seen since Christmas, dancing with your father and laughing it up with college roommates. The only way to keep those memories fresh and readily available is through the photographs and video captured in the moment.

It makes choosing the right photographer one of the most important decisions made during the planning process. A relationship must be forged early on and a clear understanding of exactly what you want to capture is imperative.

Formal photos are a wonderful and important part of the wedding and few places provide as beautiful of a backdrop as the beach or historic sites like Fort Macon and Tryon Palace. By choosing a local photographer, brides can be sure to find the best spots for bridal portraits. You do, however, want to make sure you stick with a professional. There’s always a long-lost cousin or a friend who has dabbled in photography who is willing to provide the service as a gift, and while the addition of their photographs will make a nice addition to the album, it’s also important to have a professional on your side. If your friend is merely a hobbyist, take the leap and hire a wedding photographer with a strong portfolio of events just like yours to ensure that you’ll have images to last a lifetime.

While searching for the right photographer, don’t be embarrassed to let personality play a role. From getting ready for the ceremony through the end of the reception, the photographer will be a integral part of your wedding day – and it will be so much more pleasant for everyone if it’s someone whose personality gels with your own. No one wants to feel like they’re being stalked during one of the most important days of their lives!

Here are a few other points to remember: ● Always ask to view a portfolio of event photographs. Often photographers have these posted to a website. If planning an outdoor event or wedding, ask about the photographer’s experience with outdoor venues like a sunset ceremony. ● Ask about rates. Does the photographer charge by the hour or charge a set fee? What type of camera is used and what is the policy should something go wrong with the photos? ● Ask to see the photographer’s shot list and compare it to all the images you want to capture. Most photographers are willing to get all the shots you want, as long as it’s within reason. ● Ask about set photo packages and if your selection options (photo sizes, etc.) can be customized, and if the photos can also be provided on DVD. Also ask for the rights to the images for reproduction – some photographers hand them over, and others may charge for this. ● Consider several photographers before making your choice.

You may be impressed with the first photographer you meet; but you may be left speechless by the third.

Q. How early did you start planning? We started planning almost a year in advance. We booked the band, photographer and event space about six months ahead of time. The process can be stressful depending on the time of year. Our wedding was at the peak of fall wedding season so we wanted to be sure to book vendors quickly.

Q. What factors did you take into consideration when choosing a venue? There were two factors in choosing a venue – being able to have the ceremony and reception at the same place to make it easier for guests and the ability to accommodate over 300 guests in one space.

Q. How did you add little touches of yourselves into your big day? I love gold. That was completely apparent in all aspects of the reception. My fiancé and I love music and we knew we wanted to have a great band to dance the night away to. Mo’Sol of Atlanta exceeded our expectations!

Q. What were the biggest challenges in planning your wedding? Honestly, one of the biggest challenges for us was RSVP’s. I was never the type to RSVP to a wedding, I would just show up. Never again will I do that! It is imperative that you respond to invitations so the bride doesn’t have to call every individual and confirm when there are a million other things going on. We also worried about the weather. During hurricane season there is always a chance of adverse weather. Hurricane Matthew blew through just a couple of weeks before the wedding, which slowed a few things down – including the bridal gown, which wasn’t ready until the day before the wedding.

Q. Are there things that you wish you knew ahead of time and didn’t? I think everyone knows the saying “time flies,” and it did just that! I kept thinking “Oh, I’ll do that later,” and before we knew it the day was here.

Q. What advice would you give to brides and grooms in the process of planning their special day? First and foremost, don’t try to please everyone else. It is your day, stick to your plan because the actual event is over before you know it. Know what you want and book immediately – especially the caterer, band/DJ and photographer to ensure that you get your first choice and don’t have to go with your second or third option. www.nccoast.com

Wedding Invitation Postage Tips Whether a couple is planning a lavish wedding or a more low key affair, the wedding invitations are an essential part of keeping guests informed about the big day.

While couples can now share details of their wedding through email or even digital invitations, many still prefer to go the traditional route and send paper invitations. In addition to the cost of the invitations themselves, couples need to factor postage into their wedding budgets. It may not seem like much, but keep in mind that you are providing both postage to the guest, and the cost of the RSVP return card as well, so the cost can add up quickly. The following are a few postage pointers for couples about to tie the knot.

Choose envelopes wisely. The size of your envelopes contributes to the cost of the postage necessary to mail your invitations. Postal services have specific size and shape parameters that govern postage. Envelopes that are oddly shaped or fall outside of these strict measurements are usually susceptible to additional postage charges.

That’s because the envelope cannot run through standard sorting machinery and must be hand-processed.

Consider the weight. Mailings that exceed one ounce will require additional postage, even if they are in standard envelopes. Invitations, with their various components and thick card stock, typically weigh more than one ounce.

Never purchase postage in advance, as you will not know what the invitation costs prior to mailing. Always weigh the invitation with all inserts included to get an accurate estimate of postage. Then purchase stamps accordingly.

Get to know your local postal employee. Many postal employees, especially those who work at the smaller branches, grow accustomed to seeing the same customers over and over. They can be very helpful and good resources when it comes to saving money on postage. Strike up a conversation with the person behind the counter and ask advice on the best way to mail invitations and ensure they arrive looking beautiful. Choose an off-peak time so the postal employee can give you his or her full attention 40

and will not feel rushed by a line forming behind you. The employee may suggest hand-canceling envelopes, which means the invitation will be processed by hand rather than run through machinery to avoid damage.

Stamp the return envelope. Invitations typically include response cards that guests will send back to confirm if they will be attending the festivities. To facilitate the RSVP process, stamp the response card.

Prep invitations at least eight weeks in advance. Invitations should be mailed nearly two months prior to the wedding.

This allows guests to plan and respond accordingly.

Double-check envelopes before sending. Ensure that postage is sticking well and that envelopes are well-sealed.

In addition, verify that you have the most current addresses for recipients. If invitations get returned to sender, they can cost you even more time and money to resolve any issues.

Consider custom postage. The post office should carry several attractive options for wedding invitation stamps.

However, you also may be able to go online and purchase custom postage that features a graphic or an uploaded image to make the invitations even more special.

Do a test run. You may want to send a complete invitation to yourself just to see how it arrives in the mail. This way you can check the level of damage and have an opportunity to make any changes, such as adding a piece of vellum to prevent ink from smudging or placing bows or adornments in another area.

Give your mail carrier a heads-up. Let your assigned mail carrier know that response cards will be on the way. They tend to be small and can get lost in among other letters and mail. A small token of gratitude, such as a gift card, for your mail carrier may ensure all of your response cards arrive.

A wedding just isn’t the same without the guests. Make sure friends and family are well informed about the wedding by sending out invitations in advance and ensuring the proper postage will get those invites where they need to go.

Flower Power The ceremony surrounding the union of two people in marriage is steeped in tradition. From the “something blue” to the rings exchanged between the lucky couple, there is symbolism in each step we take. And the bouquet the bride carries down the aisle is no exception. For each flower there is a meaning, from fidelity and fertility to beauty and love and since ancient Rome they’ve been used to bring color, beauty and sweet scents to the wedding day.

Where in the past, the type of flower used for an event was highly dependent upon the color scheme, today’s flowers come in all shapes, sizes and yes, colors, making just about anything possible and only adding to the decision making that comes along with picking the right one.

Even if you don't know the name of the flower, 44

take photos of what you like and a floral designer will be able to identify the flower and let you know if it's available.

Bouquets and arrangements have become increasingly loose and flowy, said Chiles, with lots of greenery as opposed to the tightly wound creations of the past. It leaves room for lots of flexibility and creativity. Greenery can include just about anything, but currently, he said, a lot of brides are turning to the versatility of silver dollar eucalyptus and succulents.

Does he have a favorite flower currently? White freesia is at the top of his list. Slightly delicate but oh, so fragrant, the freesia can quickly dress up any arrangement.

Hydrangeas are also popular year round at weddings, so are varieties of lilies, roses and bright Gerber daisies.

If one pretty flower seems the same as another, pay close attention to how they smell. Aromatics like freesias, tea roses and jasmine are excellent choices. Some brides are adding rosemary, lavender and other herbs to their bouquets, giving them a natural aroma that will last as long as the bride.

Guests and well-wishers expect to see at least one cake at wedding receptions. But wedding guests should not be surprised if they attend a wedding and notice two cakes sharing the spotlight on the dessert table.

Groom’s cakes have existed for generations but interest in the second cake at the ceremony has fallen in and out of vogue through the years.

Most will remember the hilarity that came with the armadillo groom’s cake in “Steel Magnolias.” And while not all groom’s cakes are modeled after animals – they’re generally a humorous celebration of the groom. From cakes shaped like fish and tackle boxes to sports teams and beer bottles – no rules apply when creating a groom’s cake.

A groom’s cake traditionally represents something masculine, providing a contrast to the oft-feminine features, such as floral bouquets and frilly gowns that dominate many weddings.

Historically, groom’s cakes are chocolate, a sharp contrast to traditional wedding cakes, which tend to be vanilla and white.

Tradition once called for single women at the wedding to take home a slice of the groom’s cake

to sleep with under their pillows. It was believed the cake would help them have sweet dreams of the man they would eventually marry.

Women today are likely no longer snuggling up to fondant and mousse cake slices at night, and wedding cakes are no longer relegated to vanilla, which may account for the waning popularity of groom’s cakes. FINDING THE PERFECT DRESS Ah, it’s finally here – it’s time to pick out the most important dress of your life. While exciting and romantic, the task can also be a little overwhelming. Dresses come in all shapes and sizes, just like the brides who wear them, and it can be so challenging to find the one that is ideal for your special day.

It isn’t a job that can be rushed. Allow plenty of time to plan before shopping and be sure not to put a tight time limit on visiting dress shops. This is that moment you’ve dreamt about since you were a little girl – and there is so much to choose from.

It’s helpful to understand the different dress silhouettes and arrive at the store with an idea of what you’re looking for. Designer websites and large dress sites are great for getting a feel for what’s available. Print out things you like and compile them in a notebook or create a wedding dress board on Pinterest so you can easily share your ideas with the staff at the bridal store. Blogs, magazines, online bridal resources and large retailers are full of dresses to browse. And they’re great for helping brides solidify a style that not only suites their figure but fits well into their wedding plans.

Be sure to keep an open mind, though. Bridal stores see thousands of brides each year and the staff gains great insight along the way. Be open to suggestions and if a salesperson seems convinced that a dress will look absolutely perfect on you, they’re probably right.

Making at appointment at the bridal store is the best way to ensure that you’ll get the attention you need and deserve. This is most likely the largest apparel purchase a woman will make and one that can’t be taken too lightly. When you arrive, be sure to share your budget and images or ideas of gowns you like. A knowledgeable salesperson will be able to take that information and guide you toward gowns that fit your style and financial constraints.

Be sure you don’t discount comfort. If the gown is itchy or heavy during the brief time spent trying it on, odds are it will make for an uncomfortable wedding day. Not only should the bride feel like a million bucks when wearing her dream dress, but it should be

comfortable to wear as well. Keep in mind, you’ll be doing lots of stretching, hugging and, if you don’t have a second outfit during the reception, dancing.

When dress shopping remember to: Wear a supportive, well constructed strapless bra or corset in your correct size. If you will be wearing a petticoat, also have the right size available.

Go without face makeup when trying on gowns so they remain clean.

Wear your hair up, so it’s out of the way and gives you an idea of what it may look like on your special day.

Note that the size of the wedding gown you will wear is typically one to two sizes larger than your day-to-day clothes. Proper measurements can be matched to designers’ size charts.

It’s best to limit the number of people shopping with you to 1 or 2 trusted friends or family members. An entourage can be confusing.

It’s always better to order a slightly larger gown and leave room for alterations if you are between sizes.

While it’s always mentioned when the gown is purchased, don’t feel pressured to buy your shoes and hairpiece in one sitting. In order to make sure you can accommodate the hairstyle of your choice, it may be best to work with your hairdresser to ensure that you pick the perfect veil or headpiece to match the day’s hairstyle.

Shoes, of course, can be chosen at any juncture. Just make sure they’re comfortable and that you have them in hand when you go to have your dress fitted. Nobody wants to have a floor-sweeping dress up around their ankles, or, worse yet, trip over a too-long gown on their way down the aisle. For the sake of both style and safety, make sure you’re positive about what will be on your feet before you allow anyone near your dress with the scissors.
